Lady Superior never fails to amaze me.

Have you ever seen these? This was a first for me. I ran across them while camping in northern Minnesota. I assumed this was a type of fungus, but a Google search revealed that it’s called “ghost plant” (Monotropa uniflora). Apparently this unusual woodland wildflower isn’t super common in most areas so it was cool seeing some in person. They have no chlorophyll so they never turn green. Since they don’t have chlorophyll they can’t produce their own food. Instead, they rely on the nutrients produced by specific species of mushrooms that grow under specific species of trees. If the right mushrooms don’t grow, these plants don’t grow either. This dependence on their host mushrooms makes ghost plants a parasite species. They are also called “Indian pipe” because of their shape. If you pick them the stalks turn black almost immediately which earned them another of their names; the “corpse plant”. They bloom with a single flower on the end of each stalk and bees will pollinate them but they don’t have a fragrance that humans can detect. Purportedly they have a variety of medicinal applications that range from stopping epileptic seizures to fighting gonorrhea and toothaches. These were an interesting discovery, at least for a nature geek like me. #GhostPlant #IndianPipePlant #CorpsePlant #MonotropaUniflora

Artistic Junk and Exquisite Scents
There’s nothing I love more than a good boutique (the only exceptions being a great cup of coffee and my cats).  And boy, oh, boy, do I have two incredible boutiques for you located in McIntosh, Minnesota!
McIntosh is located on US Highway 2 in Northwester Minnesota.  When you first exit the highway and turn into the town, it looks pretty old and empty.  But I PROMISE YOU, if you keep going into the town, you’ll find two hidden gems: Minnesota Rust and Howard Soap Company.  Once you’ve walked through their doors, you’ll be thrilled you’ve made the detour of the main drag!
Minnesota Rust
Minnesota Rust immediately catches your eye with its modern black and white exterior, a refreshing, updated look that really adds sophistication to the area.  During my visit in September, the outside ushered in the fall with a vast assortment of pumpkins, greenery, and antique items.  But it was the INSIDE of Minnesota Rust that took my breath away.
I’ve seen a lot of upcycle design shops, but this one took the grand prize.  When pitching it to local friends, I’ve described it, modestly, as the most artistic upcycle and antique shop I’ve been to.  You can spend over an hour in this shop just admiring the way the owner has create works of art and features of interest with the interior.  A black book case with rolling ladder made my jaw drop (because who here hasn’t secretly always longed for a book case with a rolling ladder?).  The center contained a huge focal piece that really requires a 360° viewing to fully take it all in!  If there’s any criticism to this store, it’s that the design of the inside is so wonderfully done, you end up admiring that and forgetting to shop!  Oh, who am I kidding?  That’s not a criticism!  That’s a compliment!
The owner is also very personable and friendly, eager to talk about her shop and items on display.  This is not only worth the stop if you happen to be passing by, but worth a specific venture to this destination itself.  BONUS, her daughter’s shop, Howard Soap Company, is right next door, and a beautiful green space connects the two.
Howard Soap Company
Tumblr media
I first stumbled upon Howard Soap Company at a Home Show two years ago, and I’ve become their biggest cheerleader!  Locally made in McIntosh, Katherine Howard’s soaps, lotions, candles, etc. are beyond my ability to describe.  I could, and have, literally spent over an hour spelling every single product she had on hand, taking photos and notes of my favorites, and having to hem and haw over which scent(s) were coming home with me.  Because there is NO WAY I can run into her goods and NOT buy some!
What sets Howard Soap Company apart from other candle and lotion maker in the area, or in general, is her unique blend of scents.  You’ll find yourself inhaling the candles over and over, trying to let your nose capture everything good inside the wax, your senses pondering the combination.  “I’ve never smelled anything like this, BUT IT WORKS SO WELL!”  I’ve bought her lotions for friends, her candles for my home.  It’s the first candle I light, and the first one I burn until it’s gone.
I cannot wait to go back and visit this evening and see what new goodies she has on hand!  Bonus, if you can’t make a trip to her store in person, you can purchase some of her lotions at Total Betty in Thief River Falls, MN; at Palubicki's in Fosston, MN; or order them online from her Etsy store (see link below).  But, honestly, you need to go take an afternoon and enjoy her store and smell these divine things yourself.

Haunted Marketplace Event
Tumblr media
And as if these ladies aren’t busy enough creating magic in their stores, they’re also hosting it!  Both companies partook in the Fosston area Fall Shop Hop, and they’re back with a “Haunted Marketplace” event Friday, October 25th, 5-8pm in downtown McIntosh!
Festivities include:
Adult Trick-o-Treating
Shopping
Food and drinks
Giveaways and prizes
Music
Tarot card readings
Heck yeah!
My friends and I are getting Halloween glammed up and headed out to the events.  I’ll be sure to post an update  Come on out and enjoy some adult boutique fun!

Today, 04/23/2022 Adam T & I went in depth into the details of building a business. Adam is interested in starting his own videography entity, and is curious of how to start directing his energy. We discussed the importance of trying to determine a direction and focus of the type of content someone would want to make. We discussed the importance of making sure that whatever type of content we end up making, and if it would be content that would have meaning to us in the future. We talked about how to connect and generate clients, as well as how to find clients in places that we would least expect.

I got a call in February asking if I wanted to open for @litafordofficial and @kipwinger April 15th with a new project. It went smoothly. 1 & 2: action shots by one Mr. Steven Albright. 3: The end of “Summer Song” originally by Joe Satriani. #musician #minnesota #mn #drummer #blackandwhite #music #localartist #ironrange #northernminnesota #mnmusic #drums #cymbals #guitar #bass #instagood #foryou #professional #tbt #life #project (at Virginia, Minnesota) https://www.instagram.com/p/CcoFKcZukAp/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Back in the 70’s when I was a kid, we would find a #TigerSalamander under every log out in the woods of #NorthernMinnesota. Since that time, pollution has significantly impacted #amphibian populations. Salamanders are especially vulnerable and in most areas around here you are lucky to run across one these days. It’s been at least twenty years since I’ve seen one, which made this encounter special. This find was even more special because I had never seen this species in person before; a #BlueSpottedSalamander. Normally I would never handle a salamander because bug repellent and sunscreen residue can pass through their skin and kill them, but I knew my hands were free of anything poisonous so I carefully and quickly evacuated this guy to a safe location after I discovered him in our campsite’s woodpile. #LakeSuperior #Camping #HerpLove https://www.instagram.com/p/CBZLOLmAki2/?igshid=pzmg9of3y1b3
