Paladin Tourney - Preliminary Poll #8 (Order of the Stick)
O-Chul (Order of the Stick) vs. Miko Miyazaki (Order of the Stick)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Propaganda:
O-Chul
OotS is a D&D webcomic, so of course they have paladins—a whole faction of them called the Sapphire Guard, ranging from Lawful Stupid crusaders to rule-bending youths to one old aristocrat without a PC class level to his name. And then there's O-Chul. If Miko is everything wrong with paladins, O-Chul is everything that be right about them. He's noble and honorable, sticking to his paladin oaths...most of the time. Unlike Miko, he's willing to recognize when bending the oaths is Good and when failing to uphold them is inevitable. He cares about friends and allies, doing what he can to protect them; he shows empathy towards many of his enemies, most notably the Monster in the Darkness. He's a good, heroic dude who encourages others to be better. His heroism isn't just a matter of attitude. A paladin has strong fortitude and will, and O-Chul excels at both, even if his reflexes are rather poor. He endured months of imprisonment, torture, and villains betting on whether he'd survive the torture without losing either his life or his compassion towards (some of) the people betting on him. And judging by his implied level and lack of paladin class features, this paladin's paladin has at least twice as many fighter levels as paladin levels.
Miko Miyazaki
In a DnD-inspired world, she’s so how-not-to-play-a-paladin that her trying to be a paladin brought the end of the world one out of five steps closer

rereading order of the stick (again), and greyiew is only in a few comics so far but man do i love this nihilistic wolf
#order of the stick#yes i know it hasn't been terribly long since i last reread it but#i've been desperately trying to get my dnd group to read it and i just had to go back and go through it again#and again. the first 250 strips or so are pretty cringey and there's aspects even later that make me wince#but fuck once you get to the soul splice arc you've read the last bad oots comic#''utterly dwarfed'' is fucking *incredible*#i am both incredibly ready and incredibly not ready for the climax#i bet durkon will live and i'm sure haley elan and roy will#o-chul i'm leaning ''survives'' and lien i think will make it#minrah will probably make it. i bet serini is doomed.#belkar is obviously doomed#i'm 100% on the fence about v#like straight-up 50/50 both ''live'' and ''die'' serve strong narrative purposes#but as to how it all plays out?#v still owes the fiends 23 minutes meaning the order can't rely on them to back them up in the clutch#so on the one hand it would make the most sense for them to hit as hard and fast as possible#but on the other - if the fiends *don't* call in the debt for their own purposes#they will have burned out their most powerful member too soon#burlew is too clever and too good a writer for a traditional battle scene as the climax#more is going to happen. *something* massive is going to shift#serini turns? redcloak turns on xykon and gets eaten by the mitd?#i can't tell! i'm going to flip tf out whenever it does happen though#hnggh this has been 20 years in the making and the climaxes have not failed a single note yet#burlew is goddamned *good* at rising action and nailing the climax of a story arc#it's gonna be fucking incredible ugh

jinwoo is absolutely dissatisfied with the way people treat his husband because apparently most S rankers still see him as a tool or weird kind of pet they can order around simply because he’s ‘not enough to be S rank but too good and useful to be a mere A rank’
jinchul doesn’t see what’s the problem because that’s how he been working for years and it’s pretty much a standard at this point
jinwoo did had a talk with gunhee about it but that’s what is job about, it’s something jinchul can’t have control over
apparently jinwoo wants to help but jinchul stops him because intervention will make things worse, why someone would break a perfectly working bicycle, after all
and it all frustrates jinwoo to no end because his entire being, his monarch side just demands that his spouse is shown same amount of respect, that his spouse should stand on almost same ground with him, and he has all the tools for it by simply making their relationship known but jinwoo respects jinchul’s opinion even if he doesn’t agree with it
but jinwoo wouldn’t have been jinwoo without doing things his way, so apparently he just starts to show importance of jinchul for him through small things as if telling others ‘dare to disrespect him and I’ll personally make sure you’ll be afraid of your own shadow’

Braindead.
Currently re-reading all of Cha Hae-Ins thoughts, actions and emotions in the solo leveling LN and the only things that stick with me are:
She and Baek Yoon Ho have gone on raids together, and are on some level of friendship with one another? heck Jin-Woo even trusts Yoon Ho to take care of Hae-In most of the time, that's cute.
Hae-In's inability to be the first to initiate a conversation, even with Jin-Woo, unless it's Choi Jong-In or Woo Jin-Chul. Also, the way she is casually relaxed around Jin-Chul when they meet at the High Orc A-rank arc. Just the casual, "yo you seeing this?" "yes miss cha =_= *god the paperwork i will have to do after this*"
Also, love that once seen where Jin-chul just goes full on protective mode on Jin-Woo to hide his identity, and everyone but Hae-In is scared.
Hae-In being a menace by actively going like "I can do this yo, I'm fine" while she was almost killed by Beru and Jin-Woo going like "fine my foot!".
Cha Hae-In's fight against the architect was much cooler, honestly. It was bloody, hella exciting, hella crazy, gave me Jin-Woo x Igris vibes. This was such an epic fight and now I'm 20x sadder.
When I said Hae-In resembled Goto's 'fighting enemies stronger than you' train of though, i was later on a bit sceptical until i delved even more into her fights and, yeah, this woman does not care about dying alright. Says she does, and that she is scared and then I see her fight against beings that threaten her and everyone else and I'm just like, 'Liar! the moment Sung is danger you went apeshit!'
CHI: *gets injured* this but a scratch.
CHI: *WJC, SJW or CJI get injured* Pray to god I don't see you in hell next--
JongIn's "Are you fine?" to Cha Hae-In with every bone broken in her body I---

Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fin qui niente di unico, per quanto bello. Ma la Festa del Miracolo ha due caratteristiche uniche. Nella cappella di San Lorenzo infatti, l'altare principale è ricoperto di "tortani", una sorta di biscotto salato
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Che le donne del paese preparano nei giorni precedenti la Festa in quantità incredibili: circa 30 mila pezzi. E questi Tortani verranno distribuiti da delle particolari "spensatrici", giovani ragazze del paese che partecipano alla processione così
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media

Round 1, Side A - Sir Becket (The Weekly Roll) vs. O-Chul (The Order of The Stick)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Propaganda:
Sir Becket (The Weekly Roll)
He's my favorite paladin character ever. He has an identity crisis after murdering a family which prompts him to basically try to redeem himself while also trying to stop his party from being murderhobos. Also, LOOK AT THAT HAT. Top tier paladin helmet in my opinion. It's shaped like a bucket.
O-Chul (The Order of The Stick)
OotS is a D&D webcomic, so of course they have paladins—a whole faction of them called the Sapphire Guard, ranging from Lawful Stupid crusaders to rule-bending youths to one old aristocrat without a PC class level to his name. And then there's O-Chul. If Miko is everything wrong with paladins, O-Chul is everything that be right about them. He's noble and honorable, sticking to his paladin oaths...most of the time. You know, what's cool about Order of the Stick is that it dares to be a story where only half the major characters are in a romantic relationship. (Less, depending on who counts as 'major.' I'm counting just members of the Order here, not Team Evil or the various characters like the paladins, Hilgya, or Minrah they've picked up on the way.)
Haley and Elan are, like, the "token representation" characters. Roy gets tossed a girlfriend bc he's the hero ig? She's rarely around.
V had a spouse who was known about for a while offscreen, got three pages onscreen and promptly served divorce papers.
Durkon? Had an affair one (1) night which resulted in a kid 1000 strips and two irl decades later, the mom wants nothing to do with him. Otherwise probably completely celibate.
Belkar will sleep with anyone and romance nobody.
None of the paladins have relationships. Not even O-Chul and Lien, or Hinjo and Lien.
None of the long-lost parent figures are still in a relationship. Elan's parents are divorced and Tarquin had like nine wives (none onscreen, also he's Evil about it). Haley's mom and Durkon's pa are dead. Who KNOWS abt Belkars parents. Roy's are both dead and took 'till death do us part' with gusto.
None of the airship crew have any romances (except for the one throwaway gay couple who got one panel of screentime).
Team Evil does not do any of that. Not Xykon, not Redcloak, not the monster in the dark, not Jirix. Tsukiko was the only one with any relationship drive, and she got brutally murdered (unrelated reasons).
Straining to remember any other romantic relationships ever.
OH! Sabine and Nale! (But that also specifically parallels Haley and Elan, like they explicitly said 'evil opppsites.')
Therkla fell in love with Elan and it was not reciprocated (?) (he cared abt her but not like that. Not to cheat on Haley.)
The gods have their whole thing I suppose but that hardly counts.
Not even Julia, the high school hottie, is ever mentioned having a significant other.
There is one (1) actually married couple. Two soldiers who were nameless until they took offense to being called nameless soldiers and changed it. They got married and she's pregnant.
Order of the Scribble had one couple.
The cast is SO HUGE and there is SO LITTLE romance. Only half of the six-member main cast is in a relationship. Unheard-of. And of the huge cast of side characters, there are 3 only stable relationships. That's all! THATS ALL!
I love it.
Thats the real aspec rep: not just one character who doesn't care, but a whole world where that's Not The Focus.
Instead, OOTS focuses very strongly on familial relationships. Parent (singular) and child(ren). Siblings (twins). Aunts and uncles, even.
And in the midst of all that... the platonic bonds of deep friendship forged between the main cast.
