Laudna whirls on her eyes wild, flaring. “Stay away. She– you can’t be here.”

“I’m here.”

“You’re not. You’re not.” Laudna growls, “Delilah, you bitch, leave her out of this. Your quarrel is with me.” She is raw and feral.

“I’m here,” Imogen repeats. “I promise. We killed her, Laud. Delilah is gone.”

Laudna hesitates at this. Stiff shoulders droop an inch.

She shakes her head as if to clear the illusion.

“No. No, don’t. Don’t,” Laudna whispers, falling to her knees as her legs give out, “please.” Her voice cracks like a stone.

“Don’t what, Laud?” Imogen questions softly.

Laudna looks up, cheekbones stained black with teary ichor. She pulls at her hair, tearing it out in chunks. “Please,” she repeats, “enough, Delilah.” Exhaustion seeps from her pores, solidifies in the air around her. “Enough.”

The macabre glee so characteristic of Laudna is notably absent. Limbs in constant motion have fallen still. Sallow skin clings to jutting bones as leather is bound to a tanning frame. Purpling scars seem to stand stark against bleached skin. Fresher wounds, too, it almost seems, lurk just beneath the surface. Faint scratches like the mark of thorns.

She is a shell of herself. The husk of a tree scorched by lightning. A ribcage with no heart. Delilah has worn her down to the point of collapse.

Imogen reaches out with her mind but recoils at the raging barrier she encounters. Laudna flinches at the intrusion.

Oh, honey, Imogen thinks, What did she do to you?
