You’re not less deserving of rest if you didn’t have a productive day. It’s okay to be just tired. You don’t even need to be having a pain flare up, or a relapse, or chronic fatigue, or to have slept poorly last night to validate your exhaustion. You don’t need to justify feeling tired to anyone. You are human and you deserve rest no matter what. Don’t beat yourself up for not being as productive as you wished you were, for being tired and burned out. Take care of yourself, and do it unashamedly because rest shouldn’t be earned, neither should any of your needs. That’s all they are: your body is signaling to you that it is tired, or hungry, or thirsty or sleepy. Your body is not worse than others for needing those things, even if you think it needs more rest than other people do. It’s not broken, it’s not bad, it’s just telling you what needs so it can keep going. Take care of those needs, don’t blame it on yourself, please don’t let guilt make you feel ashamed of needing anything. 🌱

Soup for Elijah from Side Wounds
for people who are bad at taking care of themselves
(here's where i started this poem - i want to write a poem about soup. here's where it ended up - a persona poem about elijah in second person. i've had quite a few angels in my life who've told me this at choice times, mostly they have been my friends)
1 Kings 19:4-8 (NIV) - the passage referenced (i reference it twice in side wounds, actually, that's how much it resonates with me)
4 while he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness. He came to a broom bush, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, Lord,” he said. “Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.” 5 Then he lay down under the bush and fell asleep.
All at once an angel touched him and said, “Get up and eat.” 6 He looked around, and there by his head was some bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again.
7 The angel of the Lord came back a second time and touched him and said, “Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you.” 8 So he got up and ate and drank. Strengthened by that food, he traveled forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God.

I must sleep. Sleep is the mind-healer. Sleep is the big-life that brings total ability to fucking do anything. I will face my bed. I will permit the blankie to pass over me and snores to pass through me. And when sleep has gone past I will turn the outer eye to greet the new morning. When the sleep has gone there will be everything. Energy and will to live will remain.

It’s easy to dismiss your achievements when they seem so small in comparison to what your goals for the future are. Please remember that small steps are progress, don’t beat yourself up for not getting closer to what you dream of by doing things at a pace that is not respectful to your own limits, to your circumstances and whatever problems you struggle with. Those small achievements build up with time, they bring you closer to your goals. You can still enjoy life while you’re not where you wanted to be and you can still enjoy the journey when you do things at your own pace. You have time, and you’re not a failure.
Remember to recognize the small steps you make, and try to be patient, those small steps are taking you to new places, even if that is hard to see now because you’re still just at the beginning of your journey. Try to accept yourself as you are, knowing that things will change not only because you’re working towards it but because change is natural. Things won’t stay the same forever, you’re not stuck - you’re making progress even if you don’t see it.
Try not to beat yourself up at the end of the day because you couldn’t manage to do everything you planned. You’re trying, and the fact that you are doing so is already a good thing. Those small daily achievements matter, even when you can’t achieve all the ones you set out to do because you only have so many hours in a day. Please don’t push yourself to always get everything done so you can reach your goals as fast as possible because you won’t be able to enjoy your success if you’re burned out and struggling with your health. It’s not over yet, but you need to rest so you can carry on. You can keep trying tomorrow, it’s not too late. You will get there, but be mindful of your limitations, be kind to your body, recognize the smallest of achievements, they all matter. You matter.

Something I try to keep in mind when making art that looks vintage is keeping a limited color pallette. Digital art gives you a very wide, Crisp scope of colors, whereas traditional art-- especially older traditional art-- had a very limited and sometimes dulled use of color.
This is a modern riso ink swatch, but still you find a similar and limited selection of colors to mix with. (Mixing digitally as to emulate the layering of ink riso would be coloring on Multiply, and layering on top of eachother 👉)
Tumblr media
If you find some old prints, take a closer look and see if you can tell what colors they used and which ones they layered... a lot of the time you'll find yellow as a base!
Tumblr media
Misprints can really reveal what colors were used and where, I love misprints...
Something else I keep in the back of my mind is: how the human eye perceives color on paper vs. a screen. Ink and paint soaks into paper, it bleeds, stains, fades over time, smears, ect... the history of a piece can show in physical wear. What kind of history do you want to emulate? Misprinted? Stained? Kept as clean as possible, but unable to escape the bluing damages of the sun? It's one of my favorite things about making vintage art. Making it imperfect!
Tumblr media
You can see the bleed, the wobble of the lines on the rug, the fading, the dirt... beautiful!!
Thinking in terms of traditional-method art while drawing digital can help open avenues to achieving that genuine, vintage look!
