I’m really excited to see what they do with Ricky. I think the first episode did a really good job setting up his character. Right away he starts pointing out these connections between him and Stede, saying that he was also an outcast who went into pirating because of it. They were both wealthy, they enjoy fancy things, they seem pretty similar right?
No.
Because Ricky then starts insulting the other pirates. He looks down on them, he draws clear distinctions between them and the other pirates. He tells Stede that “men of our standing, we know a valuable when we see one.” When he mentions the Roman puzzle chest. Ricky clearly sees himself as better than the other pirates because of his status and wealth.
But Stede doesn’t. Sure, Stede is judgy and catty, but he never makes anyone on his crew feel bad or lesser than for not being of high status and genuinely cares for them. He also eagerly wanted to learn about pirating from them, he looked up to them and asked for their advice! Unlike Ricky, who is clearly still clinging onto that superiority, which gets him caught by Jackie when decides to be cocky and make a drink so they “know they’ve been robbed by the best.”
Which is why I think he’s going to end up resenting Stede for “planting” these ideas in his head and go after him, and he’s going to have to realize that he simply doesn’t understand piracy. Izzy’s quote about “belonging to something” makes so much sense when you see the lack of community or solidarity he has with pirates vs. Stede finding community with people who accept him
I could write a 10 page essay with Chicago referencing about how this finale and the last few episodes have really thrown a great show down the toilet. Talking points include:
A character death after such a great redemption arc that was rushed to fit a 30 minute episode slot.
The whole crew just feeling nothing after said death and moving on to attend a wedding as if they didn’t make him a whole new fucking leg in episode 4 to show they care about him.
Stede gets to be an asshole last episode and Ed and Izzy mention at great length about how his behaviour isn’t okay, and they don’t touch on that at all in the finale? Stede gets to be a little cunt and no one bats an eye?
Bit of a Han Solo “I love you/I know” moment with Gentlebeard which threw me off ngl
The main antagonist of this season was a guy who was in episode one for no more than 5 minutes and was caught lacking.
Said antagonist does not make a return until episode 6 to plot revenge - I feel like that would be fine if there weren’t only 2 episodes after that.
sometimes i’m happy and sometimes i remember Izzy sang La Vie en Rose which literally is like about seeing love through a rose-tinted lens so him singing the song while Stede and Ed were fucking having fun is such clear and plain foreshadowing for episode 7
anyways Izzy slayed not only his drag and singing but also my psyche
don’t get me wrong, I love the ofmd fandom. but after the season two finale and Izzy’s death I have to say that it’s also really toxic.
I always thought the Izzy haters were toxic (after seeing so many profiles on twitter, tiktok etc with bio descriptions like “this is not an Izzy fans safe space”). now the Izzy fans get as toxic as that?!! I have spent the entire time after watching the finale trying to not get angry at people but I can’t. many people say that his death was bad writing, that they killed him off because he was queer or disabled. that they erased the message they wanted to pass along (that being queer is beautiful, that everything works out etc) by killing a main character. not to mention that everyone says it was cruel to kill a suicidal character because it shows that he couldn’t have a happy ending (which wasn’t true, because ed). it makes me sad, to see this community, who was previously been so open and loving, mistaking things and splitting up.
Izzy’s arc was beautiful, he was a great character, and he got everything he deserved: feeling part of a family, being confident and happy in his queerness, and, most of all perhaps, he got to apologize to ed. he got closure. the fact that he died was heartbreaking and felt sudden, but he was not the first character to die, nor will he be the last. no matter how loved he was.
our flag means death is a comedy, yes. seeing it take a darker turn in season two was tough, I’m sure, for everyone. people tend to forget the emotional wreck the first three episodes of season two were. the show is not light hearted and perfectly happy anymore. and it’s difficult to grasp that. but you can’t be aggressive and disregard the hard work that was put into making this. and more than anything, don’t ever forget that it does have an almost happy ending, that it still gave us such amazing and diverse characters, and also that its main message is love. with its ups and downs.
I’m sorry if this is too chaotic, I have so many thoughts at once and I can’t organize them. I hope we’ll get over this, as a fandom. we all have each other and we can talk the difficulties through - as a crew :)
**SPOILERS FOR OUR FLAG MEANS DEATH SEASON 2 BELOW**
About Izzy in that S2 Finale…
Well. I’ll say some nice things first. Unlike other tv shows I’ve seen, Izzy had a whole redemption arc for being the show’s previous antagonist rather than just jumping straight to a “redemption” death. And as a friend poetically said, at least he died doing what he loved, knowing he was loved.
HOWEVER. HOWEVER HOWEVER HOWEVER, I think Izzy should’ve been allowed to live, for the following reasons:
Con O’ Neil is an international treasure and the man acts his ass off.
We could’ve explored Izzy moving on from the abusive relationship with Ed. He repressed a lot of the trauma. Naturally, negative side effects would’ve cropped up. I think showing Izzy further learning to thrive and explore healthy relationships would’ve been reaffirming for viewers.
Speaking of romantic potential, we could’ve gotten an Izzy-Lucius-Pete pairing. The romantic tension between Stede and Izzy could’ve been addressed. Or Izzy could’ve found a leather daddy/daddies who deserved him. Etc, etc.
Izzy is a significant, visibly disabled queer character on a tv show. That’s rare media representation that has to be treated with the care it deserves. With the way his death happened, it not only removed the representation but also made it so a disabled queer character lost the will to live. Other tumblr users like @bougiebutchbitch and @cononeillbreastingboobily explained it better. Their posts can be found here and here.
Izzy also represents the emotional core of the crew and hope for an older queer generation. Why would you ever get rid of those things?
Although I can see how Izzy’s death was intended to create a more dramatic finale, it felt both anticlimactic and unnecessary. If Izzy’s death hadn’t happened, the narrative would still make complete sense. The finale-worthy emotional impact they were going for could’ve been achieved by showing the whole crew saying goodbye to Ed and Stede as they started a new life together. Ed and Stede could’ve appointed Izzy captain, which would’ve had precedent since Izzy has been the heart and voice of the crew. Ed and Izzy still could’ve had their healing moment together. And Izzy would’ve been set up for a potential matelotage, since this show loves its parallels. Sometimes a straightforward, happy ending makes the most sense and you don’t have do too much. It’s already great.
