Divine fire, hellish greed: dark fantasy AU concept
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
“ A willful boy with a formidable curse.
A mad king revived in a new form.
What has destiny in plan for each? ”
Lore/context (can be skipped):
In a land of wonders and magic, two races have long since coexisted in its seas, forests and deserts; Humans and the Na’vi. Legends often spoke that Na’vi stemmed from forest spirits, who inhabited Eywa’s embrace in times long forgotten, while humans are said to be descendants of stars hanging over the land.
Some say that when a star falls, a human is born. They are often thereby called “sky-people”, or “people of the stars”.
However, because their origins are not of the land, they never possessed a kuru; a way to bond with their new home. As result, many began forgetting great mother’s teachings, and that lead to the emergence of kingdoms. Na’vi followed suit, but not fully, their towers built of stone found above ground and hugged by sprawling vines, keeping them steady, connected.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Human kingdoms grew higher and higher, pale and perfect in their shape, perhaps to reach the stars they have long ago abandoned, and that brought them at conflict with their home. Digging and mining disrupted a fragile balance, yet kingdoms, one in particular, kept growing amidst the chaos.
Its king, Selfridge, was notorious for his greed, which soon led him to discovering a new, never before seen type of magic. One that could make the grandest of ships fly as if they were lighter than a feather, and create weapons of unthinkable destruction. Life-force magic was capable of performing incredible feats as long as wielded by an experienced sorcerer, but there was no such thing as an infinite resource. Everything, including magic, had to draw from something, and draw it did, from the life of Eywa’eveng herself.
As ships soared, the magic drained energy from land itself, from the tiniest sprout to the strongest pali. Not even the mighty thanator could draw breath once the spell went into effect. It killed all which is in sight to fuel itself.
That is the cost, and majority of humans accepted it. Those who didn’t, migrated to Na’vi kingdoms to live amongst those who shared their reverence for nature.
One of life-force magic creations were avatars. Creatures conjured by trapping stolen energy and giving it shape of its own, allowing an attuned human mind to travel into it while their primary body slept. That way, knight Jake Sully became a spy in the Omatikaya kingdom. However, not long after, he realised the devastating effect of their magic and how it ultimately doomed everyone in Eywa’eveng to annihilation. Running away with other Na’vi sympathisers, he tamed the legendary Toruk, believed by most to be a divine guardian spirit of the great mother embodied by a fire-breathing apex predator, and rallied the clans against a growing empire, which, shortly after Jake’s escape, was overtaken by commander Quaritch in a military coup. The new king was insane, obsessed with power and revenge for Sully’s betrayal, but said madness ultimately lead to his defeat, as princess Neytiri of Omatikaya pierced him with her father’s arrows.
It was a new era of peace, and humans refusing to side with the Na’vi were told to leave Eywa’s lands.
Not everyone had such option though.
Story:
A boy with honey brown eyes and blonde curls was found in the abandoned Hell’s Gate castle after the great battle, allegedly the son of Miles Quaritch himself; and as no one dared to take him in, Mo’at made a decision that the child was to be kept in their kingdom, under Na’vi’s watchful eye.
Years passed and the Sully royal family grew, now having four children of their own! One, an adopted girl birthed by Grace Augustine’s avatar.
The human child meanwhile grew around plethora of workers around the village and was eventually taught the craft of caring for pali, the ikran, and the wild gardens. He grew into a crude, stubborn, but hard-working and gold-hearted stable boy, always eager to help, and spending every minute of his free time around the royal children who took an immense liking to him, and eventually saw him as a brother.
Although Spider, as he was now called for his affinity to climbing, never experienced parental love, he tried not dwelling on his circumstances and keep his head high…but it was never that simple.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As humans of the destroyed kingdom began returning, trying to rebuild as early as when Spider Socorro turned ten, a wild Toruk has been sighted in the fringes of Omatikaya territory. In the span of five years, said Toruk became a looming threat, as he was vicious and terrorised villages with a fury never before seen. Many whispered that it was the great mother’s wrath from seeing malicious sky people return to her lands.
In one of those attacks, at night, innocent farmers lost their lives to the fire-breathing dragon, and as princess Kiri ran to the stables the next morning to share tragic news with her brother…there was not a trace of him.
In fact, there was no trace of Spider in the entire castle. He vanished.
.
Meanwhile, the mad king has been revived, brought to life using previously discovered magic, and together with his most loyal undead men and women, whom he deemed jackals, got a task of upmost importance from the new queen herself; Francis Ardmore. She was a regal one, standing tall and proud despite her small height in comparison to the old ruiler, and promised him a high rank in the court if he does as told and stays loyal.
“I’m asking this because I don’t wish to offend you by underestimating your abilities…why do you trust me not to overthrow you the first chance I get, to take what is rightfully mine?”
“Because the cavern between the Na’vi and humans has never been wider, all thanks to what you’ve done to the Omatikaya kingdom, commander. Whatever influence you have left exist under my rule. If you want a chance at power again, a chance at trust from these people, you’ll need me.”
And so, with the promise of reward dangling over his head, Quaritch and his jackals set out on a journey towards the kingdom of ash to which only he knew the route, said to be inhabiting the most capable mages to have ever walked Eywa’eveng. The new empire will need a good alliance to thrive.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Barely a week into their journey, the squad got their hands on a curious catch. A boy with a mane of golden curls who snuck into their camp at night to steal some much needed food. Too bad that Zdinarsk had gotten the gift of foresight with her revival.
“And who might you be, little one?” Quaritch asked with a smirk.
“Spider…S-Socorro…” The teen responded, shaking, but determined.
The smirk slid off of king’s face. He couldn’t help but introduce himself, and inquired as to what an heir of his had forgotten in dangerous forest depths.
“I’m sick. I’m looking for a cure. Was told that there were mages in the south who knew a remedy to anything.” He mumbled.
“Well isn’t that a lucky coincidence? I think I know who you’re looking for. It’s the ash kingdom court mages, no?”
Spider gasped.
“I know my way to them.” He got down on one knee. “And I can lead you there, boy, but not without payback. Say, that jewellery on your neck is awfully familiar. You Omatikaya?”
The boy kept silent.
“I reckon you are, so how about this…” He smiled again. “You lead us to the mountain dragons; the banshee your people tame, and we give you a ride all the way to the mages.”
Spider had no choice as the king would never willingly let go of his newfound heir, but Miles wanted to present him with an illusion that would keep him docile.
“…alright.”
.
And so they travelled for what was undoubtedly the longest week of Spider’s life. The mad king he’s been told of, who ravaged the lands that were home to him, now walked side by side with the boy as if nothing happened. It angered him, how there seemed to have been no remorse on his end, and Socorro hated being angry. It made his chest burn.
Quaritch was not blind to the hate of course, but it was worth it. He never thought he’d have the boy with him again, and yet there he was; grown, sassy, bold, and with a smile so bright it could cure death itself.
Perhaps this journey was not for nothing after all.
.
Barely a second week in, the dam had burst. A minor inconvenience between father and son erupted into a loud argument over history, morals and convictions. Quaritch should have expected it. Should have known that a child of his, abandoned by their father, would bear a painful grudge. That the wound was deeper that the blonde originally let on with his constant quips, but he never could have expected what came after.
“I HATE you! YOU’RE A MONSTER!“ The boy roared, and jackals stepped away in growing caution, noticing as something in his chest glowed through the tunic.
The roars turned animalistic, agonising, feral. Noises neither a human nor Na’vi could muster.
Spider clawed at the ground as his own fury at Quaritch, at the recoms, at the humans, consumed him. Transformed him in a bright flash of fire.
“…kid..?..”
But there was no child at the clearing.
Only the Toruk; fire-breathing king of skies.
Wrath of Eywa personified.

We're watching Let There Be Carnage today, bois!!
This would be so much more enjoyable if my prescription wasn't going out....
Also. 'Cletus'? Who names their kid that? I refuse to believe there are really people named Cletus. Just like there are no babies named Bob.
Maybe don't taunt the pretty lady with the badass scar and the supersonic scream...
Eddie!
Venom's a mood. I love him.
He's so nice to Eddie.
Eddie, my dear, we both know that Cletus is shady af.
I want Venom's ability to draw!
Why did you have to go piss off Cletus? We know he's shady. I don't care if he calls you his friend, he's not.
Eddie called Venom abusive!
Chickens do have tiny brains. It's funny.
Good job setting boundaries, Eddie.
Poor Venom, stuck eating chickens.
Calm your tits, though, my dear.
He's like a puppy dog when Anne calls!
Golden Retriever energy.
Poor Eddie, though, being forced to take a phone call while dangling from a roof...
I love the dichotomy of what Eddie's saying vs. what Venom is saying. It's really funny.
"I'm going to make you cry now. Cry. Cry!"
Cletus just called you "Paly, pal" in a letter to invite you to watch him die. Listen to Venom. Do not go to his death sentence!
"You feel like home to me." That's mildly concerning.
Hello, Carnage.
It's cute that Eddie thinks he can beat Venom in a fight.
It's cute that Venom thinks he can kick Eddie out of his own apartment.
His bike!
Hello, Carnage!!
Bullets aren't working. Maybe, idk, crazy idea: Stop firing?
Cletus escapes. Knocks on Eddie's door. Eddie opens door. Fucking idiot. It's the chief of police, but still-
Eddie, Cletus is gonna be gunning for your head on a pike. You don't open the door when someone is coming for your head!
"I am out of the Eddie Closet!" Honey. Sweetie...Babe.
I can appreciate Cletus's taste in cars. That's a nice car he stole, smh.
Venom thinks this rave is for him and everyone else is too drunk to correct him and are just going along with it. The only people not too drunk are too scared.
No! He died!
Eddie, you fucking idiot. You are not invincible anymore. Do not go to the creepy ass mansion!! You'll die!
Dad says I can't drive like Cletus.....😞
Don't taunt the pretty lady with the badass scar and the supersonic scream!
Awwww! They're together again!
He's so soft with her! He even stole her dream car!🥰
Prof. X would be horrified by Francis' treatment.
Eddie really just pulled "I can fix him!" when talking about Venom.
Poor Dan.
Aw! Cletus is inviting Eddie to his wedding!
Now Anne understands the dichotomy of having Venom in her head! Poor Dan is stuck watching this all go down.
Again, mister cop, sir. Bullets aren't working. Stop firing and run.
She has a beautiful dress. I love it very much. Cletus could've matched better.
The priest looks terrified. Poor Anne.
Venom! Perfect timing.
"Death to you, father!" "No!" "Not you, father. You father!" Patricide at its finest.
Eddie looks scared out of his mind. Venom doesn't wanna deal with his kid.
Carnage! You can't just slap people!
"Time to die!" "That's the spirit!" "I mean us. We are going to die."
Poor father just got called a power up
Maybe going to higher ground was not the decision, mister cop man sir...
Good job, Dan!
Shit, now he's a target.
"Manno a Manno", Cletus? There's a ringing bell! Missed opportunity to say "For whom the bell tolls" but whatever.
Filicide!
He said the thing! Carnage said the movie title!
Patricide!
FB Is going down screaming!!
Oof. Crushed by a bell...
Goodbye, Cletus. Goodbye, Carnage.
Wait.
Filicide. Venom ate Carnage. Yucky
Cletus just wanted a friend.....
Venom says no. He ate his head.
He's got his toes in the sand! He doesn't have hair, though...
"...When you love someone..." I see you, Venom. Eddie sees you, too!
I am so fucking excited for Along Came A Spider to come out!!! Words cannot describe-!
(I swear I've seen a trailer and an announcement for it. Unless I hallucinated it......I'll cry if that's the case)

Name was sitting at their chair; like the violet haired boy, they didn’t seem to wanting to let go such comfortable and loved spot. The seat’s padded arms wrapped them, and loud noises, which were clearly audible from outside the headphones' speaker, filled their ears, comforting their person, the one who was so afraid of succumbing to silence. Another game ended, another hour passed. Their night and day were spent accordingly to this living style, the routine that didn’t allow any thought to permeate to their brain. Name occasionally let go of the mouse and lifted their hand off the keyboard in order to take a sip from the crumpled – maybe survivor of a fit of rage – bottle, of which plastic reflected the suffused red light that enveloped the room. This time was different, though. Name, once they finished swallowing that vague liquid, didn’t lay their eyes again on the monitor in front of them, but twisted slightly their head. The movement was slow and felt not natural – given the time they just spent still, in the same position; it took them a few minutes to adapt to the new posture, but after that, everything came back to normality, to the old days when life flowed ‘effortlessly’. Following their head, was their body. The chair rotated on the place, allowing the young to face in the direction of the other, who was still sleeping, not even caring to get under the blankets. Name’s eyes wandered along the pale boy silhouette. His sleep seemed messy, eyebrows frowned, jaw slightly clenched: an uneasy look on his face. It resulted crystal clear, that his nightmares were nagging him once again. His magenta lips tightened, as if he did not want to let escape the anxieties to which he was accustomed. He secretly kept that mask of silence; even if, at first glance, he could look like an egoist narcissist, he had never wanted to weight down the others with his own struggles. Name, to the sight of the boy quietly shifting in his rest, stood up from their chair. Slowly, dragging their feet, still drowsy because of the endless time spent at the desk, they got closer to the bed.
Scaramouche was laying on his back, and the place of his legs reminded a mixture of supine and fetal position. Name was devouring that view. The other’s body was right before him, it seemed like he lowered all of his guards and allowed himself to appear defenceless in front of Name. That look was rare to be seen on the purple haired boy, and Name found that extremely attractive. Only the thought of Scaramouche, feeling comfortable enough to take off his costume, aroused them. It made their chest burn, they were proud of themselves but at the same time, they felt an unconditional attraction to the other. They felt the need to embrace him, to slide their fingers all along his features; they wanted to draw delicate traces long the boy’s back, starting from the bottom of his neck and carefully going down, following his spine, until his dimples of Apollo. God, if they were attractive. Said Name to themselves while picturing the image in their head. They wanted to hold his hand, and with the other, empty one, trace his slender interlocked fingers.
Slow shaky breaths left pale chapped lips. The boy’s mouth was slightly ajar, enough to allow feeble sighs to escape. Hours passed since the man fell asleep; the softness of his face was starting to vanish. His head felt heavy, dragged down by the weight of the thoughts that were racing through his mind. In a deep state of sleep, his body was resting bed-nailed, not hinting of wanting to abandon that troubled but peaceful – compared to his life – dream land.
A drop.
Their focus shifted from Scaramouche’s hands to his face. A single, little drop was drawing his cheek. A crystal tear, pure as the boy’s looks, reflected a past of mourning, an Odyssey with no Ithaca homeland to return to: an open wandering with no sweet end. Without letting go of the other’s hand, Name slowly lifted theirs. They leaned in, getting closer to that resting face. Their finger was about to caress the violet haired boy’s tender skin, in an attempt to clean him off the teardrop. But they froze. It was not their role to comfort Scaramouche, nor to help him. They surely knew he didn’t want to be helped, and he definitely didn’t need it either. That was the older’s will: to overcome his past, by his own.
They stayed in that position for a while, gazing yet another time at his soft features. They could never get enough of them. Feeling the attraction of a magnet at the tip of their nose, they leaned in more. They shifted their weight onto the bed, putting a knee on the soft duvet to top better over the silhouette of the other. Decreasing the space that separated them, they were now almost front to front. Only a single exhale from Name’s lips was enough to awake Scaramouche from his slumber. Immediately, the younger gently jolted back to give room for the boy to move his head. The violette was now facing Name. Purple irises interlocked with their entranced ones. Name was sinking, losing themselves in fields of Petunia flowers. A fresh, cold fragrance, rising from amethyst locks, gripped to every inch of Name’s skin.
Scaramouche pinned his gaze into the other’s, but no answer was to be perceived. They had long ago gone astray in gracious Elysian Fields. A spacious land. A spacious land for reverb to be heard; for distant burning worries to be lost; for lonely souls to find comforting solitude and full silence.  It was possible to grasps the melancholic tunes of mellow, familiar melodies, far away at the borders of that extra-corporeal dimension. Old notes melted in blurred memories. Fragments of a forgotten, worn out childhood.
The feeling of burning skin touching their collarbone awakened them from that ethereal wandering. Snapping out from their trance brought them to directly face Scaramouche. In the snap of a moment, their mouths were tied together, enlaced. The kiss was delicate. Soft lips gently being burned by feverish emotions. Theirs was a calm passion; it kindled the air around them. No hurry allowed in that brief instant: they were there for each other, and they were not about to run anywhere.
Tumblr media
[Fun fact: the symbolic meaning of petunia flowers has evolved throughout time from associations with anger and resentment to the more modern symbolism of desire, hope, and calmness. I thought it could have been a good fit for Scara]

On June 27th 1583 James VI escaped from Ruthven Castle to St Andrews Castle.
This is, to me is always one of the strangest occurrences in Scottish Royal history. Now called Huntingtower Castle, Ruthven was, as you would maybe expect Lord Ruthven, who also went by the name the Earl of Gowrie.
Apparently this had to do with The Protestant Lords getting worried about those pesky Catholics getting to paly with the young King, one in particular was Esmé Stewart who was his second cousin and part of the Franco-Scot arm of the family. Esmé arrived Scotland just as James was about about to reach his majority, that is the age in which he would rule in his own right, until then he had Regents rule in his name and they often quarrelled and jostled schemed for their own aims.
The Scottish diplomat and memoir writer, James Melville described Esmé as “of nature, upright, just, and gentle”. Given James’s penchant for men,( it has been written he was gay, or at least bisexual), this exoctic visitor from France soon became a firm favourite with 13 year old King. Less than a year after arriving James made gave Esmé the title Earl of Lennox and in 1581 further bestowed him with the name Duke of Lennox.
Of course in a post reformation Scotland ruled by Protestants a Catholic with titles such as these pissed them off a wee bit. In the end Esmé had to make a choice, his religion or his friendship with James, he chose the King. The Scottish Kirk remained suspicious of Lennox after his public conversion, and took alarm when he had the Earl of Morton tried and beheaded on charges of treason, for the murder of his first cousin and Jame’s father Lord Darnley.
Scottish Calvinists began to noticed the physical displays of affection between him and the king and alleged that Lennox “went about to draw the King to carnal lust” While James had disposed of his Regents and was now ruling, something had to be done.
In August 1582, in what became known as the Ruthven Raid, the Protestant earls of Gowrie and Angus lured James into Ruthven Castle, imprisoned him and forced Lennox to leave Scotland. During James’s imprisonment , John Craig, whom the king had personally appointed Royal Chaplain in 1579, rebuked him so sharply from the pulpit for having issued a proclamation so offensive to the clergy “that the king wept” to which the Earl of Gowrie responded “Tis better that bairns weep than bearded men!”
This next part was in my eyes strange, even though he was a prisoner James kept a secret correspondence with Esmé, who the Lords expected him to show he was falsely converting to fool the King, on the contrary the former duke remained a Presbyterian and died May 1583. I would have loved to have found a more sinister cause of death, but all I could muster was natural causes.
His final letter was to James Stewart, Lord Doune, requests that Lord Doune take care of his son and to recover for him Esmé’s possessions in Scotland. His heart was taken beck to James in Scotland and his wife and son Ludovic came to Scotland. James had repeatedly vouched for Lennox’s religious sincerity and wrote of him in a poem called “Ane Tragedie of the Phoenix”, which compared him to an exotic bird of unique beauty killed by envy.
James regarded all Lennox’s family with great affection, and instructed his son Charles I to do well by them. Charles faithfully fulfilled this obligation, and as a result the Lennox family had considerable influence at the English Court over the next two generations.
The King’s captivity came to an end in June 1583, when he escaped while on a visit to St Andrews. The Ruthven conspirators were in turn banished from the kingdom. The Earl of Gowrie was shortly afterwards pardoned and allowed to return, but after involving himself in further plotting, was executed in May 1584.
The photo is a 19 century depiction of James and his captors by Scottish artist William Baxter Collier Fyfe

Why Hawaii is the Ultimate Spring Break Haven for Adults
INTO YOUR ELEMENT
FOUR REASONS WHY HAWAII IS THE PERFECT ADULT SPRING BREAK DESTINATION
If spring is nature's celebration of life, then Hawaii is earth's greatest luau. There are few places on this planet that the four elements — air, fire, water, and earth — are on such spectacular display. Spring is our annual reminder that the natural world always finds the perfect balance, and after the last year, you're likely feeling ready to get back into your element. My recommendation? A well-deserved Hawaiian spring break to make your aloha spirit soar. Travel is for the young at heart, and below are four elemental reasons why you should consider a grown-up spring break escape to Hawaii. This adventure is easier than you may think: simply get in touch with me and get pre-tested before you fly (a requirement of all travelers to Hawaii). You deserve unparalleled travel experiences, and I look forward to helping you travel safely and exceptionally to your island of choice when you're ready.
THE ELEMENT OF AIR
CHARTER A HELICOPTER TO EXPERIENCE KAUAI FROM SUCH GREAT HEIGHTS
Hawaii exists for endless exploration, and when you climb aboard a chartered helicopter, your access is granted to go just about anywhere you desire. With spectacular coastlines and amazing green, black, and white sand beaches, stunning valleys, dramatic volcanoes, and so much more — you certainly have options. You won't be disappointed seeing any island from a bird's eye view, but Kauai by helicopter is not to be missed. Your jaw will drop at your first sight of the Garden Isle's Nā Pali Coast and the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific" at Waimea. Consider indulging in an exclusive remote landing to treat yourself to a gourmet picnic overlooking lush, tropical valleys and waterfalls. Where to stay on Kauai:  Treat yourself to a 5-star bungalow, cottage or villa at The Lodge at Kukui’ula. Kauai's quarantine requirement is anticipated to lift by early April, meaning now is the perfect time to get in touch to plan your upcoming island adventure.
THE ELEMENT OF FIRE
DISCOVER HAWAII VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK ON THE BIG ISLAND
It's remarkable how climatically diverse The Big Island is — from snow-capped peaks to lush rainforests and staggering sea cliffs — and then there's Kilauea, the world’s most active volcano. This is an island you have to see to believe.  Hawaii has literally emerged from the ocean, and we have millions of years of volcanic activity to thank for its creation. A visit to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is practically a mandatory experience -— and with the current ongoing eruption of Kīlauea Volcano creating a growing lava lake, now is an exhilarating time to visit! One way to get up close (but not too close!) is on a guided hike. You can also experience a private boat tour where you'll marvel as molten lava cascades into the ocean like a fiery waterfall. Where to stay on the Big Island:  Experience aloha at the newly opened Mauna Lani, an Auberge Resort. (Bonus: it's Sharecare VERIFIED™). Receive privileged access to complimentary upgrades, early check-in/late check-out, daily breakfast for two, $100 spa credit, wifi, and more.
THE ELEMENT OF WATER
GO WITH THE EBB & FLOW ON MAUI
Like the tide gently enticing the waves back into the ocean, you won't be able to resist the draw of Maui. With its cobalt blue waters and breathtaking beaches, Maui is picture-perfect, yet photos never seem to do it enough justice.  Spend a leisurely day splitting your time between swimming in the resort's infinity pool and dipping into the warm ocean waters. Snorkel or scuba dive with sea turtles and spinner dolphins amongst gorgeous reefs in the crystal clear waters of nearby Molokini. Spy humpback whales breaching the surface during their annual migration (November - May), or take in the heavenly island views on a ferry trip to Lanai. Drive the winding and super scenic coastal Road to Hana. And don't mind the occasional rain showers — in Maui, it's safe to assume a vibrant rainbow will greet you around every breathtaking bend in the road. Where to stay on Maui:  Andaz Maui at Wailea Resort is situated on Maui's premier southwestern coastline along Mokapu Beach. Private perks include complimentary upgrades, early check-in/late check-out, daily breakfast for two, $100 spa credit, wifi, and more.
THE ELEMENT OF EARTH
GET GROUNDED ON LANAI
Mother Nature puts on quite a show on the secluded Hawaiian island of Lanai. With 90,000 acres of pristine beauty to explore, consider horseback riding along peaceful trails, off-roading to remote beaches, and marveling at the island's otherworldly rock formations. A surprise to many, you're more likely to find pine forests in Lanai than white sand beaches dotted with palm trees. Drier than its neighboring islands, Lanai's landscapes are strikingly beautiful and rooted in mystery. Where to stay on Lanai: Indulge at Sensei Lanai, a Four Seasons Resort. This luxurious wellness enclave is set amongst lush gardens and impeccable sculptural art. The opportunities for reconnection are endless, and you'll be pampered with private perks including complimentary round-trip airfare from Honolulu on Lanai Air, upgrades, early check-in/late check-out, daily breakfast for two, $100 spa credit, wifi, and more.

Fantastic Four # 9 - 12
Tumblr media
Warning, Spoilers Ahead…
A Brief Summary: Doctor Doom suffers another embarrassing defeat
Debuts:
·         The Ovoids
·         Impossible Man from the planet Poppup in the Tenth Galaxy
·         Willie Lumpkin
Favorite Cover: #12 – The Fantastic Four Meet the Hulk!
Invisible Girl Hostage Count: 5 out of 9 issues
Points of Interest:
·         The issue opens with Reed using his “electronic x-ray camera” with “radioactive film” in an attempt to learn more about Sue’s invisibility power.  Sue urges Reed to hurry as it’s “hot and stuffy” while “Torch keeps his flame on”.  Said Torch is acting as Reed’s lab assistant. Johnny is taking notes while engulfed in flames – except for his hands.  Between the causal use of “radioactive film” and Johnny walking around in flames, it’s a wonder the group lives long enough to battle Doom later on.
·         The FF’s signal flare appears in the sky. The trio attempts to exit the lab but the door is locked. Johnny decides to burn through the door but is stopped by Reed: “Trying to stop you from blowing us up, kid! Did you forget how sensitive that nuclear device is to heat?!” Johnny was completely engulfed in flames only four panels earlier and Reed didn’t seem to care but now it’s a no-go.
·         Is it safe to keep a nuclear device in the middle of New York City? Especially with Johnny and Ben living in the building. The duo engages in destructive rough-housing on a near-daily basis!
·         Reed attempts to stretch his arm to reach the Fantasti-Car so the trio can leave via the window but the strain proves too much. No worries, as Johnny has learned something new: “I can concentrate my flame so much that it burns without heat!” What?!
·         The trio escapes the lab. Reed decides “Let’s forget the Fantastic-Car. We can make better time without it!” Again, what? Johnny, maybe, but not the other two. And this is the era where Johnny randomly loses power due to “exhaustion”. Wouldn’t it make more sense for Johnny not to use his powers until the group has reached the scene of crisis? Especially when you have an awesome car-plane just waiting to be used?
·         The three head to the source of the flare. Sue causes a car crash with her “now you see me, now you don’t” routine. I never understood how Spider-Man was a “public menace” and the X-Men were “hated and feared” by the general public in comparison to the Fantastic Four in the early days of the Marvel Universe. Spider-Man mostly stopped criminals and the X-Men were isolated in Westchester County minding their own business…meanwhile the Four, in the heart of NYC, can barely go an issue without causing a mass panic or massive property damage…many times caused by Ben having a tantrum!
·         The source of the “emergency” is Ben wanting to show off the new statues Alicia has made of the team’s enemies. Sue protests the inclusion of Namor. Reed questions Sue over her feelings for Namor: “I thought we had an understanding.” Sue admits she’s not sure of her own feelings.
·         Johnny’s glad he’s “not old enough to have all those kinds of mushy problems”.  Karl Kessel’s “Human Torch” series contains pre-transformation flashbacks of Johnny flirting with girls. And he’s flirting with Valeria, Princess Pearla, and soon to be dating Dorrie Evans in the “Strange Tales” series. Perhaps Johnny’s referring to “serious” relationships?
·         Doctor Doom has returned to earth! And decides to storm Marvel Comics and terrorize Stan Lee & Jack Kirby with the sight of his unmasked face?!
·         Doom proclaims: “I do no blame you for shrinking from the sight of me! I still cannot bear to gaze upon my face myself! But I must remove my mask at times else I feel it will strangle me!”
·         Reed has the nerve to question Ben: “What makes you so bad tempered all the time?” Seriously, Reed?!
·         We have a fun moment of Johnny & Ben uniting to prank Reed by stretching his clothes.
·         Doom ambushes Reed. Victor explains he was rescued by the Ovoids, an alien race whose “science and culture were a million years ahead of ours”.  Doom learned many abilities from the Ovoids including the ability to switch bodies with another person. Victor promptly switches bodies with Reed.
·         The rest of the team arrives and subdues Doom (Reed). Ben and Johnny are very excited to have captured Doom (Reed) and devise ludicrous ways to imprison him. Not to worry, Reed (Doom) had devised a cell to contain him.
·         Kirby draws some extremely creepy “Evil Reed” facial expressions.
·         Back at the Baxter Building, the rest of the team is overrun by a herd of miniaturized animals: horses, bears, kangaroos, moose, elephants, cows, camels, zebras, birds, etc. The trio scramble to contain the animals and return them to Reed’s lab: “You know how angry he gets if anyone interferes with his work!”
·         Reed (Doom) returns and the trio questions him – 1) Are these the animals stolen from the zoo and 2) Why are you shrinking animals?
·         Victor spins a story that this “reducing ray” will expand the team’s powers and allow Ben to transform at will. I know Reed is the scientist of the story but that explanation makes no sense. The team chooses not to press the matter of the animal theft and forced experimentation.
·         Doom (Reed) escapes from his cell and seeks the aid of Alicia Masters. Unfortunately for Reed, an invisible Sue was visiting Alicia and knocks him out.
·         Alicia is confused: “How can that be Doctor Doom? There’s an aura of goodness about him…of nobility!” Really, Alicia? You can sense that from an unconscious man in a suit of armor? I wish someone would establish Alicia had minor empathic abilities – otherwise, her “sensing” is ridiculous.
·         Johnny & Ben arrive to defeat “Doom”. Ben is furious that Alicia was threatened: “You tried to scare Alicia, did ya? Nothing can save ya from me now, ya miserable ghoul…I ain’t kidding now! He threatened Alicia! Do ya hear me? He dared to threaten Alicia!”
·         There’s a cute scene where the team takes Doom to the parked Fantasti-car only to discover a group of neighborhood kids palying in it.
·         Johnny and Ben suspect something is off with Reed & Doom so Johnny uses his powers to create a mirage to test their suspicions. I love Silver Age powers – always used in ways that make no sense with actual science.
·         Doom is found out, re-switches bodies with Reed, and shrunk to nothingness by his own reducing ray. The next time Doom achieves god-like powers he should erase everyone’s memories of his ridiculous Silver Age-shenanigans.
·         Issue #11 opens with a cute scene of the team encountering a group of children playing “Fantastic Four”. The team shows off their powers for the children. Johnny wisely reminds the kids “Throwing fireballs is easy for me, fella, but don’t you ever play with fire. It’s too dangerous for little kids.”
·         We meet Willie Lumpkin, the team’s mailman. He volunteers for the team: “I haven’t exactly got any super powers, but I can wiggle my ears real good.”
·         The team goes through their fan mail: Johnny receives love letters; Ben gets pranks from the Yancy Street Gang.
·         Reed has yet another cure for Ben who is understandably wary: “I’m sick of being a guinea pig for you! None of these things ever work right!” Ben takes the cure and transforms back into his human form. Ben, Reed, and Sue are ecstatic. A more cautious Johnny muses to himself: “Poor Ben! If he changes back to the Thing again, I don’t wanna be around to see it!”. Johnny decides to head to the garage to “fool around with my new TR-4!”
·         Reed and Ben recap their meeting in college. Ben was “State U’s football hot-shot”. Despite being polar opposites, “I was a millionaire’ son and he was from the wrong side of the tracks”, the duo quickly became best friends. Their friendship persisted throughout World War II. Ben was “a Marine fighter ace over Okinawa and Guadalcanal” and Reed was “behind the lines, working with the underground for the O.S.S.” The timeline of these events would put Reed and Ben in their late thirties at the time of their transformation into the Fantastic Four.
·         Due to the sliding timescale, the World War II bit has been retconned from Reed and Ben’s past. I think Ben’s time in the military is still part of his background – the era has simply changed. I’m not sure about Reed.
·         Sue had begun dating Reed before he left for the war: “It’s always been you, since we were kids together living next door to each other”. This would be retconned later – Sue and Reed wouldn’t meet until Reed was entering college.
·         Sue brushes off Reed’s devotion as the “shadow of the Sub-Mariner” lies between them. The whole Namor storyline could have been resolved much sooner if it was acceptable for comic book women, or women in general, were allowed to have lustful thoughts about men. Sue hasn’t spent enough time with Namor that didn’t involve threats to her, her family, or the human race in general. Poor Sue isn’t allowed to admit she appreciates Namor’s fabulous body in a tight, small speedo so the audience is left with her swooning over his “gentle”, “conflicted” nature. I love Namor but there has been nothing gentle or conflicted in his FF appearances. Execpt for the time he swam with the dolphins but Sue wasn’t there to witness it.
·         We get yet another recap of the infamous rocket flight. I understand the “every issue could be someone’s first” principle but were at issue #11 and it’s been recapped in half of the books.
·         Sue’s upset because a few pieces of mail state she “doesn’t contribute enough to the team”.
·         Reed defends Sue by saying Abraham Lincoln’s mother didn’t fight but she still contributed?! Kick him, Sue! Kick him!
·         Ben becomes overly excited and turns back into the Thing.
·         The boys surprise Sue with a birthday cake.
·         Impossible Man arrives on Earth, causing confusion and chaos in his wake. The Four battle Impossible Man in the Flamingo restaurant. He eventually becomes bored and leaves the planet. If you’ve seen the Impossible Man of the 2000s Fantastic Four cartoon, you’ve basically read this issue.
·         Johnny uses his powers to create “hypnotic rings” during the fight with the Impossible Man. You’ve got to love Silver Age powers!
·         Issue 12 begins a classic rivalry of the Marvel Universe: the Thing vs the Hulk.
·         Alicia and Ben are leaving a performance of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony. Ben comments “I get my kicks from low-down New Orleans Jazz”.
·         The army pours into town and mistakes Thing for the Hulk, prompting a mistaken identity fight.
·         Ben is quite irate over being mistaken for the Hulk.
·         General Ross arrives at the Baxter Building. He wants the Four to locate the Hulk.
·         Ross shows a picture of the Hulk. Sue fades from sight: “The sight of that monster unnerved me so that I lost control of my visibility power!” Really? I don’t buy it. First, it’s only a picture and secondly, she lives with Ben and has battled Skrulls and monsters from Monster Island. It’s not like large creatures are a foreign concept to Sue.
·         Even Ben thinks its bull!
·         The boys show off, proudly proclaiming how he – and he personally – will capture the Hulk. Unfortunately for Johnny, flying around the small room a few times exhausts him flame. I appreciate the time it takes Johnny to master his abilities – it’s more realistic as opposed to the “instant mastery” route but two laps around the living room shouldn’t wipe him out as this point. He’s been the “Human Torch” for months as this point.
·         Reed praises Johnny’s skills as a mechanic: “That flame of his is one of our most potent weapons as well as his mechanical skill.  In fact, I’ll give you a little demonstration! Johnny has just finished modifying our Fantastic-Car!”
·         Johnny encourages Reed: “You tell him, Big Daddy!” In an alternate universe, Johnny married Reed Richards – was that his pet name for him?
·         The Four and the General head to the Southwest to search for the Hulk. The Four meet Bruce Banner and Rick Jones.
·         Reed has “long been an admirer” of Banner’s atomic research. Banner returns the praise: “I’m highly flattered that the most brilliant scientific brain of our time should say that to me”.
·         Johnny both shows-off for and pranks Rick. Neither are impressed with the other. Johnny: “Look at him green with envy! Trying hard not to admit he’s overwhelmed by me!” Rick: “He wouldn’t be so swell-headed if he knew I was the Hulk’s partner!”
·         Johnny tends to dial up the obnoxiousness and showboating when he’s with another teen hero: Spider-Man, Rick Jones, and later, Iceman. Possibly a combination of eagerness to impress/work with someone of his age group and a desire to be the best of said age group.
·         The army base’s saboteur “the Wrecker”, but not the Wrecker, kidnaps Rick Jones causing Bruce Banner to unleash the Hulk.
·         The Four and the Hulk meet up in a “deserted Western ghost town” and fight. Ben finds and frees Rick. Hulk flees the scene.
·         The Four prepare to leave the base. Reed hints to Bruce: “I’ve got a feeling there’s a lot we have to talk about – like you, and Rick, and the Hulk, for instance!”

GETTING (JUST A LITTLE SALTY)-SHIPPING AND FANDOM HATE CONTINUES
I know I said my next post wasn’t going to be until some time at the end of next week but.. I’m sorry I had to write something quickly on this matter.
Normally I don’t (or at least try) to be salty in my post-especially in the Fairy Tail fandom which is filed with so much salt it could fill the Pacific Ocean.
I always try to respectful of other peoples point of view and opinion, because that is how I hope I would be treated. It’s how I was brought up-treat people the way you want to be treated.
However, as I’ve said before, I’m only human (starts to paly Christina Perri’s awesome song), and I only have so much patience before I just want to throw up my hands and go…
Tumblr media
Ladies and gentlemen I am at that moment.
Once again I saw some negativity on the Gruvia page that just made me go…
Tumblr media
It was about Gruvia’s son and… oh boy. It’s some of the nastiest, grossest stuff I have ever seen. People are making assumptions that Juvia did something to have a baby with Gray, claiming that Gray drunkly confessed to her, they did it, he sunk away on a 100 year quest because he hates her that much and regrets it (which I have SO much to say on that as well but this is not the place) and just came home to the baby. They’re also coming him an ugly frog child and calling him Tadpole and even one person claiming he is Midnight’s son.
Tumblr media
Listen, I understand you don’t like Gruvia that is fine. You have the right to voice your opinion on why you think Gruvia is awful and I will defend your right to do it. But I also have the right to say something back, and honestly…
This is some awful, disgusting double think that try and poke holes in a ship that’s cannon. Yes it is cannon at this point and I’m sorry if you don’t like that. I can imagine it’s frustrating seeing two people you don’t like together ending up together. And I love the idea of having a critical, intelligent and mature conversation explaining our different points of view. Senidng polite critique to Mashima is also acceptable-as a writer and story teller myself I am always thankful for such critique.
However what I am seeing is none of that.
First of all at this point in the narrative it is clear that Juvia does not need to do anything get Gray to make love to her. No love potions, and yes while alcohol may play a part in it you have no idea if the conception happened that night they were plastered or a night they weren’t. If you want to think that fine, but that does not automatically mean there was no love between the two (happy couples have sex under the guise of alcohol to).
I’m also sick of seeing the whole “Gray went on a 100 year quest the day after confessing ha ha ha he wants to get away from her and regrets it”. First of all the timing of the mission doesn’t mean anything. Gray, like Natsu, Lucy, Juvia and everyone else in the guild has to make money to survive and I’m guessing 100 quest get a good amount of money. I’m almost positive Juvia was working all through out that time as well because news flash, she needs money to. And let’s be honest Natsu and the gang will probably finish that job quickly (well relatively quickly).
And let’s pretend for a moment Gray does come back and Juvia is either pregnant or has the baby…why are you all acting like he would be trapped? Sure if that had happened early on in the serious I might have agreed with you but things change, people change and grow and I don’t think Gray would think that way.
In fact I think once the shock wore of he might actually be… HAPPY!! And more than just happy he would probably be head over heels for that little baby, just like his Mama.
Imagine that… Gray actually happy with Juvia and their child
Tumblr media
And while we’re on the subject of the little boy…
I’m mortified at the comments made about him. Calling him an ugly little frog child is just cruel. He’s not, and I’m a little stunned that people are saying such things but then again… it’s the internet.
Now for the idea someone put that the child is Midnight’s child.
Tumblr media
I’ve watched every episode of Fairy Tail, and granted I’m not a manga reader so I could be wrong, but as far as I know they have never had an interactions with each other. So the idea of them having a child again-unless it was a drunken one night stand like some are claiming the boy result of. Which maybe it’s just me but I find that highly ironic.
Also they picked a character that has a VERY similar look to Gray. They both have messy dark hair and face. Are they a perfect match of cores not-but they look close enough that it’s almost laughable.
I apologize if this came off a little harsher than usual but I had to say something. I understand there are fans who do not like the outcome of things and that is fine. Despite what some may think I do respect that and I’m not here to bash everyone who doesn’t agree with or even bash these few people. I will never judge or ridicule a person for their beliefs or ideas.
I will however call out ideas as I see fit.
There is so much cruelness in the world, and the gruvia hashtag and Fairy Tail hashtags are a place I can escape and feel happy and at peace. It angers and saddens me that there’s so much hostility that we can’t simply enjoy a nice drawing without having such negativity thrown at it.
All I wish is that not only would fans have more respect for each other, but would have more respect for Mashima and the characters are world he created.
Tumblr media
Hug it out guys... this fandom needs a good hug.
God bless you all and I hope you have a wonderful day. I’m off to do work more on my annotated bibliography and slave away on more Russian.

MA PROJECT RESEARCH
MA PROJECT RESEARCH
CSR (CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY).
I’m conflicted because do I actually want to work with them. Or is it bigger than that, a massive brief, how do we make brands accountable? Or creating a new landscape of advertising. What is ideal and how do we get there. Is that realistic or helping anyone though really.
Actually, this sums it up nicely:
https://www.itsnicethat.com/news/pali-palavathanan-templo-sackler-trust-opinion-piece-280319
“It is our responsibility to educate our clients, many of whom are focused solely on the bottom line, about ethical boundaries. They have no choice but to be more responsive to the expectations of the next generation, who are more driven by social impact. So just as the National Portrait Gallery has done, let’s draw our own lines in the sand and start moving forward as an industry.”
If all the “ethical” agencies are refusing to work with these companies do you not think they’ll just go to others that will? Especially the biggest companies that are offering big money, someone is going to do it.
Ethical topics, contextually relevant. Everyone seems to be considering it more and more.
Article about the D&AD insights report:
https://www.itsnicethat.com/news/d-and-ad-industry-insight-report-advertising-250419
“an ever-growing desire within the industry to increasingly participate in conversations around physical and mental wellbeing”
Description of d&ad report:
https://www.dandad.org/en/d-ad-insight-report-2019-features-opinions/
“Creative work is profoundly shaped by our politics, society, and cultural experiences. The most powerful work taps into the needs, desires, frustrations and aspirations of society. “
THE D&AD REPORT
What creative trends are there 2019:
1.    What is it to be human- technology/superhuman/identity/best selves
2.    Fractured Society- Tension/politics/social unrest/Social issues/
3.    Information Access- capturing shrinking attention spans/technology/AI
Fractured Society:
“Since 2006, 113 countries have seen a reduction in freedom while only 62 have seen an improvement” Freedom in the World, 2018.
Why should we work with brands?
Because it’s their responsibility.
Why is it their responsibility?
Because they are having an impact, causing damage.
But they need to want to pick it, to know it’s important to be accountable? How do we make that happen?
“You can try to address the issues head on with high impact, powerful campaigns that call for change or, better yet, you can start the change. We spotlighted this in the ‘Opinionated Brands’ section of our previous report.”
“Beyond speaking out, we’re continuing to see brands creating practical, problem-solving campaigns that directly impact an issue” (trash isles example).
64% of consumers choose, switch, avoid or boycott a brand based on its stand on societal issues. Edelman, 2018.
86% of consumers believe that companies should take a stand for social issues. And 64% of those who said it’s ‘extremely important’ for a company to take a stand on a social issue said they were ‘very likely’ to purchase a product based on that commitment.” Shelton Group, 2018.
“The opportunity for this trend starts with a decision: are you in or are you out? Not every brand is in the position to project their point of view. If it’s not appropriate or authentic to pick a side, don’t do it.”
Practical Solution examples: Trash Isles, the colour of corruption, Trump’s Next Move.
Or offer some escapism. You can put a smile on people’s faces without dumbing down or avoiding the important issues.
Also look at white pencil winners.
White pencil described as: “to encourage a movement that ends up with corporate social responsibility as the cornerstone of ALL corporate growth plans and ethical business behaviour the norm, not the exception”.
https://www.dandad.org/en/d-ad-white-pencil-explained/
“The right way to prosper is to do the right thing.” “Do well by doing good”.
CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILTY (CSR)is what I’m talking about.
“corporate and compassionate? We have to be”. Becoming essential. Consumers are weighing brands in a more sophisticated way. Think you can get a win win, if the brand isn’t being cynical about it and genuinely trying to create change. Find a purpose in society not just selling their products. Has to be for the right reasons- audiences know if you’re not.Is it creativity for good? Or good for creativity. We’re expecting more from brands, needs to be managed carefully. If your brand doesn’t take a stand for something it’ll disappear.
https://www.lsnglobal.com/news/article/19373/d-ad-judging-week-2016-thoughts-on-creativity-for-good
Prove that brands without CSR die out. What are the statistics or case studies?
Don’t Panic Article, what is cause marketing?
https://www.dontpaniclondon.com/tips-for-running-successful-cause-marketing-campaigns/
“An opportunity to make the world a better place while serving genuine business goals.”
1.   For it to be successful it must be genuine and believable.
2.   Businesses should mirror their operations to the philosophy or cause they are supporting, practice what you preach.
3.   There needs to be a focus on participation not just communication.
4.   ‘Not just what, but how’. Call to actions.

Formulary for a New Urbanism by Ivan Chtcheglov
SIRE, I AM FROM THE OTHER COUNTRY
We are bored in the city, there is no longer any Temple of the Sun. Between the legs of the women walking by, the dadaists imagined a monkey wrench and the surrealists a crystal cup. That's lost. We know how to read every promise in faces--the latest stage of morphology. The poetry of the billboards lasted twenty years. We are bored in the city, we really have to strain to still discover mysteries on the sidewalk billboards, the latest state of humor and poetry:
Shower
Bath of the Patriarchs
Meat Cutting Machines
Notre Dame Zoo
Sports Pharmacy
Martyrs Provisions
Translucent Concrete
Golden Touch Sawmill
Center for Functional Recuperation
Sainte Anne Ambulance
Cafe Fifth Avenue
Prolonged Volunteers Street
Family Boarding House in the Garden
Hotel of Strangers
Wild Street
And the swimming pool on the Street of Little Girls. And the police station on Rendezvous Street. The medical-surgical clinic and the free placement center on the Quai des Orfevres. The artificial flowers on Sun Street. The Castle Cellars Hotel, the Ocean Bar and the Coming and Going Cafe. The Hotel of the Epoch.
And the strange statue of Dr. Philippe Pinel, benefactor of the insane, in the last evenings of summer. To explore Paris.
And you, forgotten, your memories ravaged by all the consternations of two hemispheres, stranded in the Red Cellars of Pali-Kao, without music and without geography, no longer setting out for the hacienda where the roots think of the child and where the wine is finished off with fables from an old almanac. Now that's finished. You'll never see the hacienda. It doesn't exist.
The hacienda must be built.
All cities are geological; you cannot take three steps without encountering ghosts bearing all the prestige of their legends. We move within a closed landscape whose landmarks constantly draw us toward the past. Certain shifting angles, certain receding perspectives, allow us to glimpse original conceptions of space, but this vision remains fragmentary. It must be sought in the magical locales of fairy tales and surrealist writings: castles, endless walls, little forgotten bars, mammoth caverns, casino mirrors.
These dated images retain a small catalyzing power, but it is almost impossible to use them in a symbolic urbanism without rejuvenating them by giving them a new meaning. Our imaginations, haunted by the old archetypes, have remained far behind the sophistication of the machines. The various attempts to integrate modern science into new myths remain inadequate. Meanwhile abstraction has invaded all the arts, contemporary architecture in particular. Pure plasticity, inanimate, storyless, soothes the eye. Elsewhere other fragmentary beauties can be found -- while the promised land of syntheses continually recedes into the distance. Everyone wavers between the emotionally still -- alive past and the already dead future.
We will not work to prolong the mechanical civilizations and frigid architecture that ultimately lead to boring leisure.
We propose to invent new, changeable decors....
Darkness and obscurity are banished by artificial lighting, and the seasons by air conditioning; night and summer are losing their charm and dawn is disappearing. The man of the cities thinks he has escaped from cosmic reality, but there is no corresponding expansion of his dream life. The reason is clear: dreams spring from reality and are realized in it.
The latest technological developments would make possible the individual's unbroken contact with cosmic reality while eliminating its disagreeable aspects. Stars and rain can be seen through glass ceilings. The mobile house turns with the sun. Its sliding walls enable vegetation to invade life. Mounted on tracks, it can go down to the sea in the morning and return to the forest in the evening.
Architecture is the simplest means of articulating time and space, of modulating reality, of engendering dreams. It is a matter not only of plastic articulation and modulation expressing an ephemeral beauty, but of a modulation producing influences in accordance with the eternal spectrum of human desires and the progress in realizing them.
The architecture of tomorrow will be a means of modifying present conceptions of time and space. It will be a means of knowledge and a means of action.
The architectural complex will be modifiable. Its aspect will change totally or partially in accordance with the will of its inhabitants....
Past collectivities offered the masses an absolute truth and incontrovertable mythical exemplars. The appearance of the notion of relativity in the modern mind allows one to surmise the EXPERIMENTAL aspect of the next civilization (although I'm not satisfied with that word; say, more supple, more "fun"). On the bases of this mobile civilization, architecture will, at least initially, be a means of experimenting with a thousand ways of modifying life, with a view to a mythic synthesis.
A mental disease has swept the planet: banalization. Everyone is hypnotized by production and conveniences sewage system, elevator, bathroom, washing machine.
This state of affairs, arising out of a struggle against poverty, has overshot its ultimate goal--the liberation of man from material cares--and become an obsessive image hanging over the present. Presented with the alternative of love or a garbage disposal unit, young people of all countries have chosen the garbage disposal unit. It has become essential to bring about a complete spiritual transformation by bringing to light forgotten desires and by creating entirely new ones. And by carrying out an intensive propaganda in favor of these desires.
We have already pointed out the need of constructing situations as being one of the fundamental desires on which the next civilization will be founded. This need for absolute creation has always been intimately associated with the need to play with architecture, time and space....
Chirico remains one of the most remarkable architectural precursors. He was grappling with the problems of absences and presences in time and space. We know that an object that is not consciously noticed at the time of a first visit can, by its absence during subsequent visits, provoke an indefinable impression: as a result of this sighting backward in time, the absence of the object becomes a presence one can feel. More precisely: although the quality of the impression generally remains indefinite, it nevertheless varies with the nature of the removed object and the importance accorded it by the visitor, ranging from serene joy to terror. (It is of no particular significance that in this specific case memory is the vehicle of these feelings; I only selected this example for its convenience.)
In Chirico's paintings (during his Arcade period) an empty space creates a full-filled time. It is easy to imagine the fantastic future possibilities of such architecture and its influence on the masses. Today we can have nothing but contempt for a century that relegates such blueprints to its so-called museums.
This new vision of time and space, which will be the theoretical basis of future constructions, is still imprecise and will remain so until experimentation with patterns of behavior has taken place in cities specifically established for this purpose, cities assembling--in addition to the facilities necessary for a minimum of comfort and security-- buildings charged with evocative power, symbolic edifices representing desires, forces, events past, present and to come. A rational extension of the old religious systems, of old tales, and above all of psychoanalysis, into architectural expression becomes more and more urgent as all the reasons for becoming impassioned disappear.
Everyone will live in his own personal "cathedral," so to speak. There will be rooms more conducive to dreams than any drug, and houses where one cannot help but love. Others will be irresistibly alluring to travelers.... This project could be compared with the Chinese and Japanese gardens of illusory perspectives [en trompe l'oeil]--with the difference that those gardens are not designed to be lived in all the time--or with the ridiculous labyrinth in the Jardin des Plantes, at the entry to which is written (height of absurdity, Ariadne unemployed): Games are forbidden in the labyrinth. This city could be envisaged in the form of an arbitrary assemblage of castles, grottos, lakes, etc. It would be the baroque stage of urbanism considered as a means of knowledge. But this theoretical phase is already outdated. We know that a modern building could be constructed which would have no resemblance to a medieval castle but which could preserve and enhance the Castle poetic power (by the conservation of a strict minimum of lines, the transposition of certain others, the positioning of openings, the topographical location, etc.).
The districts of this city could correspond to the whole spectrum of diverse feelings that one encounters by chance in everyday life.
Bizarre Quarter--Happy Quarter (specially reserved for habitation) -- Noble and Tragic Quarter (for good children)--Historical Quarter (museums, schools)--Useful Quarter (hospital, tool shops) --Sinister Quarter, etc. And an Astrolaire which would group plant species in accordance with the relations they manifest with the stellar rhythm, a planetary garden comparable to that which the astronomer Thomas wants to establish at Laaer Berg in Vienna. Indispensable for giving the inhabitants a consciousness of the cosmic. Perhaps also a Death Quarter, not for dying in but so as to have somewhere to live in peace, and I think here of Mexico and of a principle of cruelty in innocence that appeals more to me every day.
The Sinister Quarter, for example, would be a good replacement for those hellholes that many peoples once possessed in their capitals: they symbolized all the evil forces of life. The Sinister Quarter would have no need to harbor real dangers, such as traps, dungeons or mines. It would be difficult to get into, with a hideous decor (piercing whistles, alarm bells, sirens wailing intermittently, grotesque sculptures, power-driven mobiles, called Auto-Mobiles), and as poorly lit at night as it is blindinglylit during the day by an intensive use of reflection. At the center, the "Square of the Appalling Mobile." Saturation of the market with a product causes the product's market value to fall: thus, as they explored the Sinister Quarter, the child and the adult would learn not to fear the anguishing occasions of life, but to be amused by them.
The principal activity of the inhabitants will be the CONTINUOUS DÉRIVE. The changing of landscapes from one hour to the next will result in complete disorientation....
Later, as the gestures inevitably grow stale, this dérive will partially leave the realm of direct experience for that of representation....
The economic obstacles are only apparent. We know that the more a place is set apart for free play, the more it influences people's behavior and the greater is its force of attraction. This is demonstrated by the immense prestige of Monaco and Las Vegas--and Reno, that caricature of free love--although they are mere gambling places. Our first experimental city would live largely off tolerated and controlled tourism. Future avant-garde activities and productions would naturally tend to gravitate there. In a few years it would become the intellectual capital of the world and would be universally recognized as such.

The Hawaiian Vacation: Leis, Luaus And Luscious Landscape
Nothing states tropical paradise that can compare with an trip to the islands. The volcanic archipelago lost in the center of its northern border Gulf Of Mexico stretches northwest in the Big Island Of Hawaii of Hawaii within the south through Maui, Kahoolawe, Lanai, Molokai, Oahu, Kauai and Niihau, each using its own identity and topography. Eleven more islands, reefs and atolls comprise the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands and therefore are all not inhabited.
Get As A Long Way Away As You Possibly Can, Really
Visit Hawaii, the 50th condition from the U.S.A., may be the ultimate getaway. The area-chain situated 2300 miles in the landmass may be the uncovered surface of a massive underwater volcanic mountain range referred to as Hawaiian-Emperor seamount chain and it is generally referred to as most remote and isolated island outcropping on the planet.
Geographically, the hawaiian islands tend to be more susceptible to tropical weather, large waves and storms around the north/northeast side, termed as the windward side. The leeward side of every island, towards the southwest, is drier and therefore the place to find nearly all resort towns. The incredible mixture of Polynesian, Tahitian and European cultures creates an engaged adventure in the traditional luaus and peaceful Shinto shrines towards the hippie-surfer culture rich in the less touristy locales.
Kauai: A 1-Stop Hawaiian Experience
The westerly island of Kauai is among the lesser lived on islands and claims a lot of Hawaii’s most stunning natural features. The mixture of a far more prominent local population using the southern resort region along with a priceless backdrop makes Kauai the best escape inside an escape.
Its northern border shore offers world famous surfing and windsurfing near the wealthy community of Princetown. The dramatically plunging Na Pali Coast Condition Park within the northwest draws backpackers and nature enthusiasts to the 11-mile Kalalau Trail, the only real land use of this rugged and isolated shoreline. Ocean coves and plush valleys alternate along the way that ends at Kalalau Beach. Stone terrace walls and sacred funeral grounds of Hawaiian tribes still us dot the valleys, while there’s an increasing naturalist community hidden in the finish from the trail. The wettest put on earth, averaging 460 inches of rain fall each year, is close to the peak of Kauai’s Mount Wai’ale’ale. From here, plunging rivers have created the fantastic expanse of Waimea Gorge, created The Grand Gorge from the Off-shore by Mark Twain. The views really are a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Resort or Adventure, Pick your Pleasure
Maui is easily the most popular resort destination in Hawaii. The luxurious island boasts the astounding and riveting Hana Highway, that is much more about the wondrous journey compared to secluded destination, and Mount Haleakala, in which a hike in to the Haleakala Crater will get you in the heart of the earth’s largest dormant volcano. The Big Island Of Hawaii of The hawaiian islands are the youngest island and nearly entirely made up of Mauna Loa, the biggest shield volcano on the planet. Lounge and snorkel around the Kona side from the island or head out across lava fields across the eastern coast.
In the bustle of Honolulu and Waikiki on Oahu towards the tranquil tranquility of Lanai’s sandy beaches, an outing to the center of the Off-shore will definitely convince you that The hawaiian islands are not only pineapples and occasional. To learn more, visit .

On June 27th 1583 James VI escaped from Ruthven Castle to St Andrews Castle.
This is, to me, one of the strangest occurrences in Scottish Royal history.
Given James’s penchant for men,( it has been written he was gay), this exotic visitor from France soon became a firm favourite with 13 year old King.
This next part in my eyes strange, even though he was a prisoner James kept a secret correspondence with Esmé, who the Lords expected him to show he was falsely converting to fool the King, on the contrary the former duke remained a Presbyterian and died May 1583.
The pics show Ruthven Castle, or Huntingtower as it is known now, and an imagining of James captivity .
