in the defanged philip, how does the golden guards work?

Somewhat differently (long-ish post)

As per canon, the Golden Guard is technically still the highest in the ranking compared to the other soldiers. But instead of being the top guy with all the stresses of being in charge, this is more of a prince-type position, if that makes sense. Like, Philip is the King and the Golden Guard is the prince that also has a bit of a say in what's to do [He still has responsibilities of course but not to the point where he gets a panic attack if he fails]

Since the death of Caleb was accidental instead of intentional in this AU, I feel like Philip would be a lot less focused on shaping Hunter or any previous Golden Guards into a 'better' version of Caleb and more just have them for company and a helping hand. Once they start getting an interest in wild magic (which they always do) he becomes a bit tenser and strict about rules. However, since Philip in this AU is slightly less of an idiot, he registers the pattern of interest in each grimwalker and lessens the reigns on the rules each time (not without extreme caution of course).

Most of the time Philip keeps Hunter busy by making puzzles for him to solve, especially when he was younger. (Think like Marcy and King Andrias from amphibia hah). Of course, at some point, Hunter started becoming interested in doing things like the other actual guards and started begging his 'Uncle' to go on missions with them too. Philip eventually gave in once Hunter became 16, but only after he was fully trained to be able to defend himself.

TLDR/ AU Hunter does not need therapy for being the golden guard... yet

ok but Caleb saying " I do not want to rob my son of his life" is heartbreaking.

It so bittersweet that he sees him like a son especially since he never got to meet his own child. I really love the scene where he gives hunter his cloak when he puts him to sleep, I think he would've been a good dad...

The way I've written Caleb's fatherhood-ness is this:

He was a parental-figure brother to Philip, but he was a child himself when he started doing that. I am sure Caleb grew painfully aware that he wasn't equipped to take care of Philip; 'nor in maturity or ability, but what's the alternative? There isn't one. You do what you gotta do with the knowledge and power you have.

Which means he probably didn't raise Philip exemplarily. You can blame the adult-Caleb for not adjusting to it; but then you're asking him to control his brother with a whole new set of rules and reshape their set and working dynamic, which is easier said than done with a teenage little brother. And you cant really blame child-Caleb for not knowing better.

Caleb acts quickly on his fears or intuitions out of terror that things can escalate for the worse. He thinks he knows best because that's who he had to be, regardless of if he actually does knows best. He never had anyone to turn to, he just had to figure it out on the fly.

I think his worst bully is hindsight, and although he acts out of love (embraced by fear) he, too, can see retroactively that his actions are at best clumsy and at worst consequential.

Nobody's perfect, I don't think he would've been a perfect dad (just as there are no ideal person or people, people are just.. people! trying their best) But I do think he'd be a very loving one. And for someone like Hunter, I think that's pretty much all Hunter wished for.

But yes, I think Caleb, with the person he discovered himself to be in the BI, is someone who would do a good job as a dad. He does care, he does love. Even if it kind of comes out like a hiccup and a slap on the back that's a little too rough.

centuries of watching his doppelganger (sons) live their lives I'm sure he also picked up on a few things to advise them on. He's better on giving advise as an observer than being the one to interfere. (clearly)

But all in all, I think he is very proud of Hunter and already considers himself a father to him. Hunter is, technically, his flesh and blood.

My version of Caleb is a very flawed person. His fatherhood and continues attempt to be a martyr or take on all the load is.. also.. Reflective on the Noceda family trauma of losing Manny.

Luz and Camila both try to shoulder the burdens in the family. Wanting to be the one who makes life easier for the other.

Caleb sees and recognises this, especially in Camila. That's why he seemingly hold no qualms in laying out the hard cold cards for Luz the way he did in chapter Modern Times.

Anyway, I like Caleb. At least the way I write him. He's a little scatter-brained and wheezing, but dangit he's pulling the plot onwards. :'D

Jacobi and McKellen as grand marshals of New York City's 2015 pride march.

All Good Omens (show) fans will know Derek Jacobi as the Metatron. His brief role on Doctor Who is also getting a lot of mention in recent posts, but I'm not going to talk about any of that.

Like his Vicious co-star Ian McKellen, Jacobi has had a long and illustrious career in theatre, television, and film. McKellen and Jacobi met when they were at Cambridge.

I'm not a huge fan of the Daily Mail, but this article, an interview with the two actors, is quite interesting. I'll just quote this part:

Jacobi says he came out to his mother when he was at university. ‘She said, “All young men, go through this phase, don’t worry.” I remember saying, “Don’t tell Dad.”’ He doesn’t know to this day if she did. ‘I think she did, but I don’t know. But they were wonderful, my parents, not much was said but they kind of knew, they got it.’

McKellen hasn’t heard his friend talk of this before. ‘That’s the first time I’ve heard that,’ he says, genuinely moved. ‘I never came out to my family. Biggest regret of my life.’ It turns out he didn’t even come out to Derek at university, even though it’s always been reported that he had something of a crush on him. 

‘Yes, I did fancy Derek, but I didn’t act on it, God, no. It was illegal, remember. I do get on my high horse about it, because it was so difficult. There were no gay clubs you could go to. No gay bars, no gay newspaper, nothing. What there was was a bit sleazy, I suspect. One of the reasons I became an actor was that you could meet gay people. Even then everything was difficult. I want to talk about Vicious for a bit, the ITV britcom in which Derek Jacobi and Ian McKellen play an aging gay couple, (respectively) a homemaker, Stuart Bixby, and an actor, Freddie Thornhill, for fourteen episodes.

Freddie (McKellen) tells Stuart (Jacobi) about a part he's hoping to get.

I had to add these for the Broadchurch reference.

It's a law that British actors of a certain age play this part.

I couldn't find one with Michael Sheen and the skull, but here he is in the role.

McKellen did the part again at 81 in an age-blind production.

Jacobi's big breakout was the titular role in I, Claudius on the BBC in 1976.

In the '90s, Jacobi played amateur sleuth and 12th century monk, Brother Cadfael on the ITV series.

I had watched some of Vicious before, but, spurred on by Jacobi's reappearance on Good Omens, looked for it again and watched both seasons a couple of weeks ago. Because I love a good fancast and Jacobi and Sheen (at least as Aziraphale) remind me a little of each other, I couldn't help but think that Jacobi and McKellen in their youth could have played a version of Aziraphale and Crowley. (There have been a couple of posts noting this about Jacobi, and that he might have been up for the part if it had been done soon after the book came out.)

I also think that Tennant and Sheen could have pulled off playing Freddie and Stuart in a flashback.

An even younger version of Freddie and Stuart does appear in the series, however, played by Luke Treadaway and Samuel Barnett.

Also good casting! They do a great job playing McKellen and Jacobi playing Freddie and Stuart.

Shoutout to this post by @ember-knights, that suggested Good Omens fans should check out Vicious for a glimpse of what life in the South Downs cottage might be. And also to other posts mentioning Vicious and Good Omens in the same breath, as well as comparing Sheen and Tennant to Jacobi and McKellen (which I probably reblogged but can't find right now).

Now, I don't think Crowley and Aziraphale are the same as Freddie and Stuart, by any means. Freddie and Stuart say quite cruel things to each other. The characters become deeper in the second season; it’s a little sweeter than the first. I enjoy the bitterness of the first season too, though. It is funny, and Good Omens fans may enjoy watching it if only to see Derek Jacobi (who plays the Metatron) in a comedy role and a role that's sympathetic, especially if they are not familiar with his large and impressive body of work.

I don't think Aziraphale and Crowley's life in the bookshop as a couple, not just a group of two, or life on the South Downs, would be exactly like this, but there are somehow some similarities that I don't even know how to begin to pinpoint or explicate.

Crowley and Aziraphale’s affection is always so palpable and that’s not always clear with Freddie and Stuart. Crowley and Aziraphale are so loving that, even when they're bickering, it's joyful, even when they're arguing, even when they're coming apart (temporarily) at the seams, their love is undeniable. I don’t even think their breakup was toxic; although they were desperate at that point and hurt each other badly, it wasn't what they wanted. Sometimes it's that way.

And, lest I'm putting you off Vicious here, the Ineffable Husbands are a high bar as love stories go, but you will get to see some love and affection between Freddie and Stuart too, and I'd really love to see these actors work together more. (I am happy with how the show ends up, by the way.)

Summary:

"I bought Eddie a ring." Bobby, to his credit, doesn't even flinch. He brings his cup of cocoa to his lips and takes a long, languid sip. He moves the mug from his mouth but doesn't put it down. Just watches Buck with a slight tilt of his head. "You freaking out?" "No. Yes." Buck gets to his feet, suddenly so full of manic energy, he feels like he could burst. "No. I don't know. I mean, why should I be? It's Eddie." or; Buck is freaking out about proposing. He gets an assist from Athena, Bobby, and. Well. Eddie himself.

This is dumb. 

Buck doesn't know what he's doing here for several reasons, starting with the fact that, despite the rapid erosion of any and all workplace norms, Bobby is not actually his dad and ending with the fact that this is not actually Bobby's problem. But the thought of going to Philip with this makes Buck want to break out into hives and, although Maddie would be willing to sit and listen to him vent and moan, she's far too busy with her own life. His only other friends might as well be family for all that they live in each other's pockets, but then there's also the fact that Bobby is... well, he's Bobby. Buck may not know what he's doing here but he knows he wants to be here and that's more than enough reason to have him sitting on Bobby's back porch with his feet perched on the patio chair, knees pulled up to his chest despite (or maybe because of) the dirty look Athena is shooting him when she looks up from her book from her spot in the living room, with a mug of hot cocoa in hand. 

Bobby studies him, curious but at ease, willing to take his time with whatever it is Buck's got cooking up in his brain. And that's a good thing because Buck has no idea where to start. He could start with the fight he and Eddie had a couple nights ago. Well, it was actually less of a fight and more of a very heated argument. On their way to work, they got started going about politics or God or something or someone that doesn't really matter anymore, and Buck could start with the way he forgot what he was saying mid sentence as he looked at Eddie—really looked at him for what felt like the first time in his life—and saw his whole future blow wide open.

He could start with the fact that he watched Eddie gesticulating with his hands out of the corner of his eye as he went on an impassioned rant, spit flinging from his lips (not that that deterred him) and thought, I want to argue with you every day for the rest of my life. Or he could start with the fact that he bought a ring six months ago, that it's been hitching a ride in the glove compartment of Eddie's truck because Eddie rides shotgun in his jeep more than he drives his own car. Or he could start at the beginning with a vow, with a promise to have each other's back, but Bobby was there or at least close by which means he's already got a SparkNotes version of that tucked somewhere in the back of his mind.

So Buck starts with the first thing that comes to mind:

"This is good cocoa."

"Thank you." Bobby grins, that little smile that says he's trying to cling to stoicism by the tips of his fingers instead of glowing with pride. Buck knows it well. Bobby nods at his mug. "Secret ingredient. Why don't you go ahead and give it a try. Tell me what it is."

"My palate is for shit."

"I know."

But Buck takes a sip because this is the game they play, this is the version of life that suits them best—the one where Bobby is his dad and Buck is his son and none of the extra details matter. Buck smacks his lips as he tries to figure out the taste. Sugar, sugar, more sugar—

"Is that cardamom?"

Bobby's eyebrows raise. He lets that smile bloom on his face and raises his mug. "I'm impressed."

"I bought Eddie a ring."

Bobby, to his credit, doesn't even flinch. He brings his cup of cocoa to his lips and takes a long, languid sip. He moves the mug from his mouth but doesn't put it down. Just watches Buck with a slight tilt of his head. "You freaking out?"

A Shadow Company Visit (pt.2)

PSA: This can be read as a standalone; yet it is recommended that you read pt.1 before (linked below).

Pairing: Commander Philip Graves x Reader & Shadow Soldiers

Summary: Whats days are like when you are visiting the shadows (and their commander) on base, and the occasional off-base mission.

Warnings: 1000+ words, a bit of overprotective themes, mentions of anxiety and children, hinted behind-the-scenes death and jealousy, light teasing.

A/N: I thought I only had a few extra thoughts tailing on... yet they kept on coming... and here we are! a bit of a different format as well, tell me if you like this format more :)

↳ After the whole gate incident, all the Shadows are a bit nervous too approach you in fear of their commander telling them off (though later on this will become true if you spend a bit too much time with them...)

↳ You start coming on to base more often and they start to become more used to your presence; seeing you eating with them, helping others to complete their work, calming down their commander, talking to everyone the same from superiors and senators to British visitor and a new recruit (you become more confident navigating the busy base as well)

↳ Philip almost assumes that you will show-up most days now, expecting you in his arms while planning the next mission, on his lap within his office as he files paperwork. You stand just behind him, hands brushing against one another as he orders the Shadows around in the morning during PT, training the new recruits and talks with department heads (they all are thankful of your presence as well)

↳ You end up having a smaller office station within his own that you work out of on your "at-home" days from your separate job, bright yellow sticky-notes cover the surface with small notes and doodles they sometimes find their way outside the office. Atop the desk also sits a mug filled with various pens that often get stolen for a very certain someone sharing the space...

↳ Anyways! You often bring baked treats for them all that are later served in the cafeteria (and carry lollipops and other sweets in your bag for kind and helpful Shadows). Other Shadows brag to one another, like receiving a metal of honour, a golden star sticker by receiving one of your treats

↳ You join them in the obstacle course, yelling words of encouragement as other Shadow groups move through, and patch up their small cuts and bruises on a nearby bench with coloured band-aid of course! (they stick out like a sore-thumb against the black uniforms and Graves nearly digs his head in while seeing how many Shadows wear the dang plasters; he does not have the heart to tell you no though)

↳ Graves does draw the line at you kissing their cheeks, those are reserved for him alone and he lets that be known as you are called into his office one day; the Shadows teasing your fading form from the field as you turn around and give them all the bird while shaking your head; blushing slightly

↳ They all do come and look for you afterwards, just to make sure that you are alright, some even apologizing while looking down at their combat boots, you can't help but accept when they act like a puppy with theirs tails tucked between their legs; wide eyes pleading for forgiveness

↳ The more time you hang out with the Shadows the more they see you like a mother (with Graves as the father, of course).

↳ "Yup, Yup Ma'am/Sir" is always echoed after as they look up at you with bright eyes; holding on to your every word

↳ When Laswell and 141 come back for another joint mission; they are all a bit freaked out over how protective everyone on base has become of you... Shadows glaring at the group as if afraid that they were going to take you away from them.... You wave a hand in their face and laugh, explaining that you all have a connection to one another now, mom and dad more together in business

↳ They nod theirs heads still a bit concerned and confused as they follow you into a new hanger you were designing, a few Shadows watch over you as you give the tour; just to be extra safe

↳ These Shadows soon get told off back to work at there stations os your partner comes over and takes their place by your side, once again he walks with the group with his hand on the small of your back

↳ On the very slim, almost impossible chance that Graves allows you to join him and his Shadows on an off-base mission; the soldiers are always in your moving shadow; guarding your every step, watching your every move. It feels slightly overwhelming at first yet you know that your partner sent them with good intentions- to keep you safe and the Shadows definitely agreed with these protective measures

↳ Most of the time through when they are off on missions, you are kept on home-base, headset dialed in to their radios as you listen to your partner give orders, you find it hard concentrating on anything else

↳ It becomes extra hard to listen to the stories of their travels as you watch their commander move and congratulate them all for a successful mission; smacking the tops of their helmets, rubbing a shoulder, patting a knee while in his full kit; decked out to the nines in all black- your throat becoming dry and your cheeks heat up while looking upon his dishevelled hair as he removes the helmet- giving you a wink in the process

↳ Some Shadows hoot and holler at this noticeable interaction while others groan and complain to be silence by a Graves Glare TM

↳ You had made sure to prepare extra good food and snacks for them all once they return, heaven forbid someone does not... you grieve hard for the next few weeks as both commander and shadows panic at your distressed state

↳ Yet as time moves on, they find various ways of cheering you up, Shadows surprise you with your favorite coffee that their commander mentioned once while on deployment, listen to you rant about your other job and you receive small sticky-notes of kind words and pictures that you don't remember leaving on your desk before

↳ You end up always wearing the Shadow Company patch somewhere on your person, from a cap, to a borrowed jacket or bottoms; feeling a sense of comfort while wearing the patch. You have all these pieces of miss-matched uniforms that Graves loves seeing you in- pride flowing through his chest and upwards to the curves of his smile while looking down at your form

↳ The Shadows love how invested you are in each one of them, now if you do not show up one day... or don't end up showing up for months; they becoming a little extra restless, reckless on missions and during training, alongside start asking way too many questions to their commander about you that Graves eventually snaps

↳ Addressing the crowd he tells them that you both are planning to have a child together...
