I'm just once again thinking about how like. obvious. and frankly open they were abt the intentions for poe's character, motivations, character arc, and stuck to it well enough that the comics managed to ACCURATELY foreshadow multiple beats in the rise of skywalker despite predating it —
and yet the fanbase went shocked pikachu when their fanon interpretation of him was immediately nixed.
#i was thinking abt his tlj arc again bc of a very depressing thought i had about it last night fjsjdkdksksk#but specifically in the context of oscar saying in the tfa press that it's important to poe to prove himself/his loyalty to the resistance#and then the poe comics doubling down with terex POINT BLANK lampshading that he can't resist playing hero#y'know? and oscar's comments about how tlj is him grappling with learning to go from heroic pilot to leader#and i just. it's done so well actually because he gets SLAMDUNKED in leia's place? he is literally grounded by the narrative bc black one#is destroyed. and he just... immediately falls back into leader mode. like it's THERE it's always BEEN there he's always been capable of it#poe just doesn't think he measures up. everyone ALWAYS forgets that the big failure/defeat that's suppose to happen for a character in#a sequel happens to poe in tfa within the first /12/ minutes of the movie. being a heroic pilot isn't enough. running back into the fire#isn't enough. he gets captured. he can't save tekka. can't save the villagers.#they learn the location of the map. but it IS enough to stop starkiller.#and it is enough to destroy the dreadnaught (which saves their asses thanks to the later ambush) but it comes at a cost: he still loses#people when he truly believed he wouldn't.#but what else is there for him to do besides throw himself in harm's way constantly to protect the light? to fight every battle the first#order throws at him???#standing back and watching people get hurt? maybe eventually sliding into complacency (like every authority leader he's served under before#leia did)?#but no he gets grounded and he's. thrown into leia's shoes. he covers her hand with his and thinks about what she would do and her theme#still plays softly as he goes through with finn and rose's plan. he stays behind just like leia's always done. had to trust two operatives.#by the time they're loading onto the transports leia's already smiling proudly/fondly at him and he gets his rank back almost immediately#at crait in the novelization (and he's leading things as much as Leia is)#(in the movie).#when he turns around and says ‘follow me’ hes falling on instinct!! hes more confident in that instinct to lead!!#by the time tros rolls around its a fear of not being /as good as leia/ and being unable of doing it /without her/ and leading on his /own/#that frightens him. not the actual act of leading itself.#i just love him so much#i love him /SO/ much he doesn't get enough credit#or respect. instead we get books bashing him for having a clear arc that allows him to grapple with learning to go from one thing to#another in war (which is glossed over in other media)#or for completely contrived reasons. or have a book that does it's best to just rehash his arc in tlj but terribly with bonus 'people beat#beat him up/tells him he should be dead/calls him arrogant/etc.

i do love finally going and watching featurettes and stuff for the sequel trilogy, and having them affirm my own interpretations of the texts. i'm getting a good grade in my special interest, something both normal to want and possible to achieve.
#in this case it was about tros!#i metaed a WHILE ago (i don't think i ever posted it) that the theme of the movie is inarguably 'regardless of your history you#still have the choice to do better'#because i DO think it is kind of genius to have ren have this frankly positive backstory of loving parents and a good status in life#(i am not ignoring the grooming on snoke's part ok just for the sake of the meta here)#and have him choose the dark side repeatedly while MAJORITY of our heroes have sketchy pasts#and made a decision to be good instead#because that is ULTIMATELY what the sequel trilogy is about. it's making the hard choice to do good and do BETTER#regardless of your circumstances.#and i was watching the d-0 featurette last night and one of the writers was like#d-0 is really representative of the story esp when rey says he's had a hard past but he's with friends now#and the writer was like which is the same for poe and finn and rey#they had hard pasts but they're with friends and they'll watch out for each other#and i'm like. sniffles. they're fambly.#glad to see i was Correct and I'm LOVING the energy but you could have still#thought. thought the poe bit out a bit more. a lot more. you coulda kept it at smuggler. he's been called the han of the group since 2015#another similarity wouldn't have ojogaksfa killed you.#we didn't need to change it slightly to something sO much worse#brief time out. blows a kiss to alex segura. bless him for going 'well actually'#nym speaks#every so often tho with how pumped oscar seemed for poe to have a bit of a history that wasn't as squeaky clean and just#how detailed like. freefall was on what he didn't/did do#i wonder whether or not stuff got cut about that.#and we just. ended up with that.#anyway

Why The Last Jedi doesn't work as subversion is that it continuously requires the characters to act like they KNOW they're characters in Star Wars and not LIVING the Star Wars.
I'll give you an example. Rey. In TFA, her parents are simply missing and she's waiting for them to come back. In TLJ, she suddenly thinks they're an important secret for Kylo to reveal to her because she's pathologically suppressed the truth that they're drunks who sold her for alcohol money (or, you know, blue milk money, whatever).
But why would she ever think that she had an important family or heritage unless she knew she was the protagonist of a space epic and having an important family or heritage is something that happens to those?
Or DJ. The Benecio del Toro character is supposed to be a subversion of the rogue with a heart of gold trope. But why would Finn and Bangs ever think he's a rogue with a heart of gold that's implicitly trustworthy? They find him in a prison cell and have no reason to think he has any loyalty to the Resistance--he even gives a speech about how he considers the First Order and the Resistance to be equally bad!
In ANH, both Luke and Obi-Wan treated Han like exactly what he was, a mercenary, who had to be cajoled into helping out until finally he showed his true colors by attacking the Death Star. They didn't know they were characters going through a story arc. The Sequel Trilogy characters act like they do, until Rian Johnson pranks them by twisting the story arc they had no reason to think they were participating in.
And the entire Luke storyline is a subversion of the entire idea of mentorship. Luke doesn't teach Rey anything. She doesn't need to be taught anything. It's unclear why she even thinks she does, given that she already beat down Kylo Ren with ease, but, again, character in a story. She thinks she needs a training montage, Rian says "she doesn't get a training montage!", and scene.
It's all very meta and post-modern and taken at face value, it doesn't make any sense once you ask obvious questions like "Why shouldn't Poe know that there is a plan to save the fleet?" Defenders of TLJ dismiss those obvious questions because they see them as unimportant next to the post-modern gamesmanship the movie is really concerned with, but Star Wars doesn't work like a Scream movie, where the characters are largely obsessed with horror movies and then, ironically, placed inside a horror movie.
That's a kind of cynicism that doesn't really work for Star Wars; you can't do a sincere narrative about the triumph of good over evil when the characters are mostly convinced there's no big difference between Good or Evil winning.
To go back to ANH, Obi-Wan is emphatic about how wonderful the Jedi were, how tragic it was that they were wiped out, how awful it is to live under the Empire, and how important it is to fight to restore the Republic. That's the baseline of sincerity that this kind of primordial mythmaking needs to work.
With TLJ, most every character on both sides are cynical, foolish, corrupt, power-tripping, shrill, pompous... most of all, incompetent. It seems less like an epic battle between the noble and the venal--more like two competing cliques of sitcom characters, only one of them is inexplicably Nazi-themed. You're left pretty much adrift, with no characters to sympathize with and no conflicts to become invested in, just visuals and 'themes'.
But children can't get invested in themes or subversion. Neither can most people. It's the province of the elitist to care about subtext over story--the sick doldrums of modern art--and Star Wars isn't for them. It's for the people.

No, but I continue to be salty about the fact that someone decided it was canon for Poe to not meet Leia until he was an adult.
I just feel like him being the kid of two people she and Han knew, him losing his mother so young…it’s like solid plot points, motivations, and drama were just laid out on a silver platter and everyone was like, “Nah, we’ll make this make less sense and also worse.”
Like, we never even got specific motivation from Ben about why he’s so bitter about Han in particular (okay, at least not that I remember. I admittedly haven’t seen any of the sequel trilogy in nearly four years, but what I recall was some one-off vague comment about Han not being around that sounded about like the reason every kid in every ‘90s movie with a Busy Business Dad would give for why their father wasn’t at a soccer game or whatever).
You know what would be more interesting? Han and Leia — both orphans themselves, and Leia twice over — doing their best to help Kes out after Shara dies, taking Poe on a weekend every-so-often, whatever, so he and Ben are basically cousins. And, like, Poe’s interested in ships, right, because his mother was a pilot and that’s what he wants to be, and Han’s more than happy to talk shop with the kid for as long as his attention span lasts. And when Ben’s, like, five he could not possibly care less about this, but as he gets older, he misinterprets common interest as abject favoritism of Poe or even a sort of rejection of himself because, while Han absolutely tries, he’s never going to fully understand the Jedi stuff and talking about flying is simple for him.
And Leia and Poe bond over old Rebellion stuff. He wants to hear about Shara and wants more stories to ask his dad about once he goes home and Ben’s kind of over it, so it’s just another area where he feels like his parents are better-bonded with someone who isn’t him. It’s not negligence or actual favoritism or rejection; it’s a complicated situation where Han and Leia are trying to do right by both boys and misunderstandings and hurt feelings ensue because kids don’t always see the big picture or whatever. And also I’m sure Han and Leia make mistakes, but they also want to be there for an old friend and this child who they have known his entire life who lost his mother — their friend and colleague — way, way too young.
And it would continue to add to the complex feelings Ben has about his mother when she starts another rebellion, which is already complicated for him, but then he finds out that Dameron kid, who’s basically family but also who he has a lot of bitterness toward, is not only involved in this rebellion; he’s kind of Leia’s go-to guy. So, Ben’s become the monster his mother always feared resided in her own blood while Poe’s a shiny, good-guy pilot just like Shara…just like Han.
Wouldn’t that have been more interesting than “My dad was never there for vague reasons, Rey, plz feel bad for me”?
Anyway, I said it when I talked about my Ewok makeover montage idea and I’ll say it again: I should be in charge of more things.

Ughhhh if we have a sequel to BEAST, I want to see sm how Beast Aku and Atsushi are doing 😩😩😩😩
Do you have any HCs on how the BEAST characters are doing after the LN's ending?
(it can be sskk or anything! 💕💕
Very funny because I had, in my drafts, a post I wrote back in August that is exactly a collection of thoughts over what I think Beast sskk would be like post-canon. I prematurely took it out for you, please enjoy!! Other sskk-unrelated Beast post canon firm plot points (also coming from posts I have yet to publish) that I have are:
Higuchi is the next Port Mafia boss. Duh. She's fairly more confident in this universe (never met Akutagawa), and took it upon herself to reorganize the pm after Dazai died. The Beast ending, where she's going to ambush the main character in an alley, is meant to serve as introduction for her character as the new mafia boss (when you think about it, Mori too was revealed to be the pm boss in an alley setting, after a seemingly friendly first meeting... ), and as introduction of the Beast equivalent of the main universe Port Mafia arc. I'm a radical Beast movie ending negationist lmao
In the mess that was the Beast aftermath, Gin ran away off city, and so did Kyouka. They end up in the same rural town– but they don't know who the other is. I'm not kidding when I say it's not unlikely that even though both worked for the pm at the same time, there's a good chance they wouldn't have known each other: it's canon that Dazai always kept Gin near him¹, and only his closest assistants would have had the chance to meet her. Finding each other in similar conditions (and possibly even similar lies to cover their own identities), they end up bonding, maybe even open a shop together? Basically, Spy × Family minus the romance where Gin and Kyouka end up living together out of convenience and both of them are completely oblivious to the other's assassin abilities because that's just what they're used to.
Other than that, reaffirming my points about how Atsushi doesn't join the ada, but is an ada ally à la Lucy or Poe; and that Atsushi is the one to die for Akutagawa in their fight against Fukuchi.

Day 6 - Life Day Damerey Celebration
Prompt: Past
Summary: Poe has a nightmare
Notes: For those of you who read Kinetic, this can be considered a 'sequel,' however you do not need to read it to enjoy this. Just know that it takes place between the 2nd and 3rd movies and our couple have an established relationship at this point.
Warnings: A bit of angst and self-flagellation. Hurt/comfort. Poe Dameron has PTSD.
AO3
Tumblr media
Poe Dameron jerked awake, sitting up in his bed, sweating heavily despite his bare chest. He took a deep breath, trying to focus on what was real. He was in his tent on Ajan Kloss. It was raining outside, which was typical, and it was warm without being hot. It was a very different environment from a transport in space, where his nightmare had taken place.
Oh, call it what it is, he chastised himself. It hadn’t been a nightmare. It had been a memory.
It wasn’t the first time he had dreamed of being aboard the ‘life pod’ shuttle, cruising away from the Raddus and toward Crait, and watching the other transports blow up, one after another, all because of him.
He squeezed his eyes shut, pushing back the tears that threatened. The self-hatred he had been slowly overcoming swept over him once more, and his chest spasmed painfully as his anxiety shot up. A familiar mantra began rolling through his brain.
What if he had trusted Holdo? What if he had not been so hot-headed? What if he had not sent Finn and Rose on that suicide mission? What if he had kept his ‘head out of his cockpit’ and been more patient?
What if? What if? What if?
“Stop,” said a soft voice from behind him. A warm hand grasped his shoulder lightly, and the touch made him shiver. “No more ‘what ifs’ tonight,” Rey whispered.
How much had he been saying aloud, he wondered? He knew she couldn’t read his mind, and even if she could, she wouldn’t do so. But she could feel his emotions, and he was sure the same panic and dread that had awakened him had woken her as well. They were still getting used to sharing quarters, sharing a bed. This was the first nightmare he had experienced since she moved in with him.
He took another deep breath, then cleared his throat. “I’m okay,” he croaked.
She was silent for a long time, then he felt her hand slide down his arm, grasping his elbow lightly. She kissed the back of his shoulder, then lay her head against it. He could feel his pulse slow and the anxiety lessened. Just having her near, feeling her presence, calmed him.
“What if I hadn’t allowed myself to be caught by the First Order?” Rey said suddenly.
Poe tensed once more.
“What if I hadn’t stupidly thought I could turn Kylo Ren and had instead stayed with Chewie and the Falcon? What if we had been there to help protect the transports, to see them all safely to Crait? How many more would still be alive?”
He sighed, knowing what she was doing. “You didn’t know,” he answered her. “You were doing what you thought was the right thing at the time.”
“Hmmmm,” she hummed, and he could feel her smile against his bare shoulder. “The past is the past, Poe. We both know we can’t change it. But I do think we’ve both learned from it, and are better people because of it.” She paused. “You know that Leia is grooming you to take her place, and she wouldn’t be doing that if she didn’t think you were worthy. Just as she wouldn’t be taking so much time to train me, even though I still think every day that I’m never going to be good enough to be a Jedi. Either she’s gone senile or she knows us better than we know ourselves.”
Poe smiled. “I trust her.”
“So do I,” Rey responded.
Poe finally turned to look at her, cupping her face in his hand as she lifted it from his shoulder. “You are going to be an amazing Jedi,” he told her.
“And you are already an amazing leader,” she replied.
He leaned in and kissed her.
Squeezing his shoulder gently once more, she whispered, “Let’s get back to sleep.”
He nodded, and they both lay back down. Rey stayed curled up next to him as he put his arm around her shoulders. He knew without a shadow of a doubt that the nightmare would return. But not tonight. Tonight, his Rey had chased the demons away and he would sleep well.
“I love you, Kuutamo,” Rey mumbled, already half asleep.
“And I love you, Sunshine.”

Okay so @kanerallels and @lone-star-ranger said they'd love to see how I would have done the Sequel Trilogy if I had been put in charge of it. This is a mere sampling of how I would abuse the power of frankensteining the movies into my own masterpiece of nonsense:
During Rey's first appearance in TFA, when she's scavenging, she's listening to music on a space walkman in an obvious GotG spoof.
Jacen Syndulla would appear once every movie, but never as a character with the rebellion. just Some Guy In A Situation.
whenever there's background music, at least one extra in the background would be dancing to it.
Poe and Kylo used to be friends as kids and Poe tells everyone he can about all the stupid stuff mini-Ben did when he was little
There would be an option in the extras menu for BB-8 to have subtitles.
pretty sure they deleted a scene where rose bit hux. i'm undeleting it.
I keep the "somehow palpatine returned" line but Poe looks right into the camera as he says it
Rey's past is never revealed. Just to mess with people. I would secretly go online and provide dozens of contradictory "leaks" about who her parents were and then never publicly acknowledge any of them.
someone calls poe's fashion sense "rebel chic"
Finn swears the rebel base is haunted and nobody believes him. turns out he's force-sensitive and it's qui-gon jinn trolling him.
The real reason Han and Leia split up was that Han kept forgetting to put his dishes in the dishwasher

full size color image here and img desc in alt text. based on this post by @lizznotliz with additional commentary from @fireandwonder, requesting the trio cosplaying as the star wars sequel trilogy triad for a convention. hardison has extremely passionate opinions about the movies and shamelessly "fixes" their cosplay by mainly making finn and poe the lightsaber wielders while rey has the force but does not utilize it beyond marital arts. this is because in hardison's version (aka, according to his 225k jedistormpilot canon rewrite that has several long-form, suspiciously detailed pwps in the verse), finn is the main character and true hero, poe represents the resistance and is fueled by their passion, and rey is not some suddenly magical scion.
there are a couple of people who dare to whisper under their breaths about how they missed the opportunity to have a more aligned "look" with canon, but parker gives them death glares. i just think hardison would not give up the chance to act as a character with a droid companion who also rides a x-wing and can fawn over finn. parker appreciates finns straightforwardness and quest to be good despite coming from a complicated background. eliot likes finn as well but hardison was like ARMS, let the world see YOUR ARMS babe.
eliot's hair started off perfectly straightened, but every once in a while when the crowds around has cleared, hardison will yell out showtime showtime, forming a circle. eliot rolls his eyes but also does some demonstration with his staff. sometimes parker joins in with some admittedly ooc but very cool acrobatic poses with her pistol.

I feel like Reva’s redemption in Obi-Wan Kenobi, already great in its own right, really shone a light on why Kylo Ren’s redemption in the Sequel Trilogy didn’t work for me.
Now granted, it was always going to be an uphill battle for me to find a Kylo Redemption narratively satisfying.  I’ve made no secret about the fact that I didn’t really think a redemption was feasible after the events of the first and second movie.
But I’m not an immovable object.  I’ve seen good writers pull off plot twists that on paper I’d never have liked.  And sometimes, even a redemption arc can work for me.
But let’s be honest here.  Kylo Ren did not have a redemption arc in Rise of Skywalker.  He was perfectly happy to keep terrorizing Rey with the force up to and until his super-magical mommy died for him.  And...no.  Sorry.  That really doesn’t work.
Redemption, narratively speaking, doesn’t need to be complicated.  Especially in Star Wars.  It generally happens in one moment of choice: Darth Vader saving his son, Din Djarin going back for Grogu, and especially, Reva deciding not to kill Luke Skywalker.
Reva isn’t more redeemable than Kylo Ren because her backstory is more sympathetic (even though it is),  She’s more redeemable because she made a choice.
Kylo Ren had many many opportunities for choices, and for the most part, he chose the most evil option each time.  He didn’t have to murder Lor San Tekka, but he did.  He didn’t have to kill Han Solo, but he did.  He didn’t have to torture Poe or Rey, maim Finn, defend the Starkiller, order the massacre on Jakku and so forth, but he did.  He didn’t have to hunt the Resistance to Crayt and try to massacre them to a man.  But he did.  And so on and so forth.
I think there was one time he chose not to shoot at his mom while she was floating in space.  Which, okay, maybe a fraction of a point for that.  But he doubled down afterward, so no.
The thing was though, no one made the choice FOR Reva.  Obi-Wan didn’t do some magical mumbo jumbo.  Luke didn’t talk her down.  Owen and Beru didn’t have her at gunpoint.  She just stopped.  It was a decision anyone could make at that moment, and she made it.  She stopped.
Kylo’s redemption didn’t work for me because it’s built into the privilege he’s had all along.  There was a constant assumption both within the movie (From Lor San Tekka, from Han Solo, from Rey - trying to repeat Luke’s triumph) and from fans that Kylo would follow in his grandfather’s footsteps.  Of COURSE, Kylo will redeem himself, it’s Star Wars.
It’s a guarantee because Kylo Ren is space royalty, because of Anakin.  Redemption is treated like an inheritance.  And in the end, Kylo gets his inheritance, not through his own choice, but through Leia’s actions.  And well, not every villain has a super powered mommy magically push them into being a better person.
Reva’s not space royalty.  She’s just a woman who had been a traumatized child, who survived through holding onto her fear, rage, and hatred.  And then, as she stares down at an innocent person, having finally found the one way she could make her enemy suffer...she stops.  She looks at who she’s become and she decides to become someone else instead.  It’s much more satisfying.
There are folks who say the best kind of redemption arcs are the ones where you can follow the person afterward and watch them become a better person.  I think that’s true...sometimes.  I have no interest in Prince Kylo magnanimously sharing the bounty of his mother’s sacrifice.  (And thankfully, I don’t have to.  His redemption, and grateful reward, are much more palatable since he dies.)
Reva though?  I’d happily watch Reva do whatever she wants to do next.  Maybe she and Haja can team up and smuggle people out of Imperial hands.  Maybe she’ll pull a Mara Jade, and go out on her own...learn about who she is outside of Imperial control.  (I still think that’d be the best way to bring Mara into the Disney franchise.)  The possibilities are endless.

It's been a year since I moved and my life turned upside down. A long year. I won't lie and say I'm used to it, I'm settled, things are better. I'd move in a heartbeat if I could.
I wanted to write all summer, but moving really knocked my fandom life for a loop. I miss it but it's just not the same here, now. However, I've been reading Finnpoe fanfic again for a week, which inspired me to post. To say Hi. To say I will always love Poe Dameron and ship Finnpoe and remember my time here as something special.
Maybe I will write again. Who knows, I may have to write some fixits if there really is a movie in the works! I would love to write a sequel to some of own stories, like The Talisman. I am still stuck on the body swap but maybe some day it will pour out. I try to think of something really different every so often, but usually remember I already wrote something similar.
Anyway. I got a new job and a new cat and tomorrow I turn older so Finn and Poe have been a perfect escape this week, and always will. Finnpoe forever! ❤️

OMG YOU LIKE STAR WARS OMFG I LOVE IT
and especially anakin, that dude slayed in every movie - even when he was a pile of frying pans and sounded like a battered kazoo
opinion on the sequel trilogy ?
haha that's fair -- i do!! i watched all the movies around 2020-2021 and i love them a lot <3
haha anakin is so good - my speed is more obi wan, but i have a soft spot for the podracer boy <3
ok i love poe, finn, and rey - i feel like there was so much wasted potential :( just overall - poe and finn got hella shafted in VIII and IV - and it's just very disappointing overall - i love the force awakens, i think VIII is my least favorite, and IV is okay
i'm not a reylo fan okay i'm sorry

hi :) I saw thst you reblogged that what's your main spin poll and I wanted to ask if you wanted to elaborate what yours is I love to hear about it!! <3
🥺 aw thank you!! I always enjoy having a chance to infodump a little bit (btw i love ur icon...daphne what an icon)
I do technically have a handful of spins that I consider my main spins because I'm constantly rotating between them (star wars, doctor who, moon knight and spidey) at any given moment, but my strongest spin is definitely in Poe Dameron from the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy!
I kind of instantly fell in love with him when my dad first took me to see The Force Awakens when it came out, which was a huge surprise for me because Poe was maybe the character I was the least intrigued by at the time (Rey and Finn had me asking far more questions, anyway) and none of the descriptions for him really jumped out to me. But after actually seeing him, I was positively in love, and then quickly downloaded accompanying novels that featured him (Before the Awakening and the TFA novelization) to read more about him, and then in April of 2016, they came out with a comic series for him and that really helped further cement my special interest in him!
It took a huge hit in 2018-most of 2020 because of all the fandom negativity (especially around Poe) but at the end of 2020, I rewatched the sequels back to back for the first time and it flared back to life without me expecting it to and I did a huge deep dive into uuuuuuuuuuuuuh every piece of expanded material he'd appeared in 😅
Basically (I'm not super sure how familiar you are with Star Wars) Poe is one of the best pilots in the Resistance, which is lead by Princess (now General) Leia Organa, and he's her right-hand man/protégé/surrogate son. Barring the Resistance's bombing fleet (which is teeny bc the Resistance is teeny and held together by duct tape) Poe is essentially in charge of its only flight wing and (as far as we know) all* of its squadrons. On top of that, he's also an active intelligence operative, and even helps oversees the reports from the Resistance's spies so like...he's kind of already helping run the Resistance even prior to officially co-running it by the third film with Leia/when he's finally named its official leader.
Poe is super important to me for a lot of reasons, but one of my favorite things about his arc is that it's not centered around romantic love/tension unlike a lot of the other dynamics in the sequel trilogy (altho Oscar did play Poe as being extremely smitten for Finn and who can blame him, and we do meet an ex girlfriend of Poe's in the third movie, I stan a bisexual king). Poe's whole arc is about his duty to the Resistance, his struggles with keeping hope because he's afraid that everything they've (and him) endured and lost will have been for nothing if they lose the fight against the First Order. If there's a love story for Poe's arc, it's his love for the Resistance and his friends, and that's so wonderful and profound in my eyes.
But also the bridge of Poe's arc, from the daring hero we see in tfa and the start of tlj, to the cautious but courageous leader we see at the end of tlj and all of tros, is Poe being forced to accept that his role in this story isn't that of a martyred hero. He's quite literally grounded (his X-Wing is destroyed) and he's pushed into the role of the leader his mentor wants him to be, and TLJ (in my eyes) is the story of someone who full heartedly believed the most he had to offer was a noble self-sacrifice realizing he actually wants to live (and that he can do far more for the Resistance/galaxy by surviving.)
I love Poe a lot because he's also very simple. He's, as Rian Johnson described him, a good guy hero. Unlike other characters, you never doubt whether he's gonna be tempted or corrupted, you know that he's going to do the right thing and remain true to the Light side, you have faith that no matter what obstacle he faces, he's gonna overcome them and come out the other side that much better for it.
The Age of Resistance comic analysis of Poe breaks it down the best, I think:
Poe's inherent humanity is what makes him a great character. He's not someone who struggles with right and wrong or good and evil. Instead, his struggle is more with his tendency to need to be the person who pulls off some last-minute, thrilling heroics in service to the greater good. Because Leia's right: you can't solve everything by jumping in an X-Wing to blow things up.
I could talk for days about Poe (I've spent the last three years doing just that) about the nuances of his character and the depths that largely go unexplored because of Lucasfilm's inexplicable disrespect and dislike of him, the fandom often reducing him to a love interest with no other personality traits, or complete bastardization wherein he resembles Hangman Top Gun more than Poe Dameron (often when people want to oversexualize him).
He has so many qualities that I adore: he's snarky and hot-headed and can throw things (metaphorically) in people's faces when he's particularly upset, he's impulsive, but also kind and compassionate and patient with people. He sees the potential for more/good in folks that most wouldn't. he truly deeply values people, and that's what makes him such an amazing leader: he inspires loyalty because of how much he believes and takes risks in the people around him. He's often the first person to give someone a second chance, or to lower his blaster, but he can also be vindictive. He's confident in his abilities as a pilot to the point he's often mistaken as arrogant, but he never puts anyone down and always lifts people up, and has a lot more insecurities than anyone would guess, and is really sensitive to rejection.
He's also kind of canonically a prince, thanks to the TROS novelization, so you know. I think that's neat and I'm so totally normal about it (when Leia passes away, she leaves her Organa legacy to Poe...the Organa Legacy would be the Royal House Organa - as well as the Resistance. So...Poe is in some ways a prince).
(*which is...three, they only have three squadrons)
