#pulp musicals: the brick satellite

No… no… hang on, because I’ve cried multiple times listening to this song because of the themes and the vocals, but like… just had a Lightbulb moment 💡… was listening rn and I just gotta talk about this bit in Urania Propitia from Pulp Musicals Episode 2: The Brick Satellite
MARGARET: To the women of the galaxy/Who never got the fame
ROSE: You’ve given me the courage not to write/Under my brothers name
ANNA: You’ve given me the blueprint/And you’ve given me the tools
ANNA, MARGARET, ROSE: History is rarely made/By those who write the rules
Because this line ALWAYS ALWAYS makes me think about the ‘Well-behaved women seldom make history’ quote and that phrase and how it’s so often used to be about women needing to MAKE NOISE rather than in a somber remembrance of all those who DID what they were told, who FOLLOWED the rules because… that was what was expected of them, or even women who didn’t follow the rules and protested and fought back, but weren’t the ones leading the charge, and they were left behind by history because of it. And while there’s much more nuance there that I don’t have the brain power for rn, I tend to sort of… despair sometimes for these women because it doesn’t even TAKE long for this happen even NOW, just a few generations before their names are GONE.
And I LOVE this bit in Pulp for this very reason, which I only literally JUST pieced together in my mind. (Like ofc i knew this line and loved it too, but I didn’t connect it my thoughts about that quote before just now)
The women of Pulp point this out. They toast to them, these women that ‘never got the fame’, never got to be able to do what they wanted, what they could’ve excelled at had they been given the opportunity. And more than that, they THANK them.
Margaret, Rose and Anna are saying: I’ll never know you, but I see you anyway, and I thank you because you’re why I’m able to be here. You are the reason I know things need to change and it’s scary but you’ve inspired me to try my damn best to do that in the ways I can.
And I just… 🥹

Why experience the emotions of adult existence (anxiety, stress, sadness) when you can instead experience the emotions of repeatedly listening to Pulp Musicals Episode Two: The Brick Satellite (joy, hope, catharsis, transcendence)?

reblogs are fab, reposts aren't <3
I started sketching some Pulp Musicals characters around midnight last night and thought to myself, "hey, these look pretty damn good!" so I kept going until 3 am. Today I brought 'em into clip studio to play with them some more, and now I have these!! plus my silly doodles and dumb commentary + jokes. <3
and some versions w/o color! the traditional + digital sketching is a neat combination, I think.

PULP MUSICALS EPISODE THREE
Guys I just got The Brick Satellite on iTunes and got my hands on the digital booklet, and I've been talking to @its-short-for-jackalope, and we've maybe figured out what Episode Three is about?
(Perhaps this has already been announced and I missed it, or everyone else has figured this out already, but I'm fucking excited.) So, uh, potential premise spoilers below for Episode Three.
Okay, so the random guy who tells our quartet that they're in the Port of Hanover is not some random guy, but a character with a name! Morgan Reese! And he's played by Huck Walton (one of the Starry Vincents), who isn't credited with any other role. It seems unlikely that they would give a completely random one-line character a whole name and bring in a totally new actor to play him, and Matt also talks in the booklet about how he's constantly looking ahead to the next chapters, so it's a safe bet Morgan is going to be a major character in Episode 3.
But what role would he play? Morgan mentions that he has to get to his ship, the Ellen Austin. So we looked that up. Turns out that the Ellen Austin was a real ship that would regularly travel through the Bermuda Triangle(!), and in 1881 (!! could be our year!!!) supposedly encountered a strange, abandoned ship near the Sargasso Sea. There was no damage and everything on the mystery ship was in perfect order, but the crew, captain's log, and ship nameplate were all missing. The Ellen Austin tried to take the ship back with it but the boats were separated by a storm. They found it once again a couple of days later sailing erratically with the Ellen Austin crew members who'd been temporarily crewing it missing as well.
I dunno about you, but to me that sounds exactly like the sort of thing Matt would adapt into a Pulp. So I'm betting that Episode Three will take place in 1881 aboard the Ellen Austin in the Bermuda Triangle and deal with this strange ghost ship. Very excited to see what spin Matt puts on it!!

john and the earth (pulp musicals) and enlightenment (starry) are both beautiful songs by matt dahan about the beauty of humanity and our need for knowledge and new beginnings and old stories and I cry about them at least once a month because they are beautiful and perfect and no song will ever come near them thank you matt dahan for creating them
