I saw “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” and I got to say the one weak link, in an otherwise enjoyable action movie, is the Villain played by Esai Morales.

He not bad in the role of the nefarious Gabriel… he’s just forgettable.

(Mild spoiler) Early on we’re told that 30 years earlier Gabriel was responsible for making Ethan Hunt (Cruise) an IMF agent. Gabriel killed a woman, Hunt was blamed, and to be released from jail Ethan joined the IMF. Gabriel is essentially Bloefeld to Hunt’s James Bond.

Morales is nice looking, but when he’s on screen, he doesn’t capture your attention. And he has few scenes to develop his character.

In the Bond films, the villains are played by strong, award winning actors like Mads Mikkelsen, Javier Bardem, Christoph Waltz, and Rami Malek. Sure, Morales has made movie too - but he’s best known for television (most recently as Deathstroke on HBO Max’s “Titan”).

While Tom Cruise hasn’t won an Academy Award for his acting - he IS the biggest action star in the world. He needs villain that match him in screen presence.

Ilithiya You:

You were the apprentice of the royal magician Amir. You had fallen in love with the royal physician Sir Abel. When you were accused of cursing the entire kingdom, you were captured by the knights of the palace. You soon realized none of your friends were coming to help, you sent a distress call out to your father, Stefan, who is the master of a temple in the mountains of Asenon. Stefan came to your rescue and teleported you back to the temple. Broken and defeated you vowed to never return to Rohim. You are now the lady of a stronghold in Asenon where you keep watch of your people and work with your father to keep the villages safe. 

Lily James as Countess Lyra:

Lyra is the Countess of Rohim and Matthias’ wife. She is the least bit interested in Matthias romantically and told him he can do whatever he wishes. She rules while he entertains his hobbies. Lyra was a friend of yours. She enjoyed having conversations with you in the parlor and drinking tea. She comforted you during your conflicts with Amir and encouraged you to pursue Abel. When you were accused of cursing the kingdom, she was on the fence about it, wanting to get all the facts before capturing you. However, the people of the kingdom and the knights overruled her decision. When you disappeared, she wanted to contact Stefan but stopped when she saw Matthias searching the seas for the you. When he gave up, she kept in contact via letters with your mother, Yara, to see how you were doing.

Dan Stevens as Count Matthias:

Matthias is the Count of Rohim and Lyra’s husband. Their marriage is for show as Lyra is not romantically interested in Matthias which means he can pursue whoever he wants. Matthias was a friend of yours and often flirted with you. He discovered you had never had proper combat training and taught you the basics, anything to get close to you. When you were  accused of cursing the kingdom, he sided with the people and his knights, leading the search to capture you. When you disappeared, he and his army searched the seas. He even put a bounty on your head but no one responded. Eventually, Matthias gave up.

Pedro Pascal as King Darius:

King Darius rules the kingdom of Alastair. He came to power when his father died from an illness when Darius was 15. Darius was crowned king and with his mother’s guidance, he was beloved and respected by his people. He is visiting Rohim to begin an alliance but discovers the kingdom may be able to help him on another matter. 

Tom Hiddleston as Sir Abel:

Abel is the royal physician and your previous lover. He had fallen for you when he first saw you and how kind you were to his younger sister. He was an old friend of Amir’s until their friendship fell apart so he related with your frustrations. He offered you advice and encouragement whenever you were depressed. He was taken aback when you healed his cuts and offered to help him in his work. He was shy when asking you out, so Charlotte ended up locking the two of you in a room together and he finally made a move. You and Abel had been together for 2 years before your departure. When you were accused of cursing the kingdom, he argued that you wouldn’t hurt a soul. However, Amir had convinced Abel that it was possible that you were capable. When you disappeared, he had thought about getting a ship and searching for you, but Lyra told him it would difficult finding you. Charlotte then became sick so he ended up staying in Rohim. He stills thinks of you to this day and wonders where you could be.

Emma Stone as Lady Charlotte:

Charlotte is the lady in waiting and Lyra’s and your closest friend. She is the younger sister of Abel and helps him on his operations. She immediately befriended you when you helped her up from a fall. She was wary of magic at first but you showed her healing spells. When you were accused of cursing the kingdom, she was determined to prove your innocence. But things changed when the Count and the people caught you. When you disappeared, she wanted to join Abel to find you but she became sick. She also wonders where her dearest friend could be and hopes you can forgive her.

Rami Malik as Amir:

Amir is the royal magician of Rohim and your mentor. He wouldn’t really be considered your mentor, however, as he was absent almost all the time. His excuses were other lands needed him, but he would be off venturing other kingdoms for the fun of it. He predicted you leaving him as your master and didn’t bother stopping you. He is Count Matthis’ friend and Abel’s previous friend. When you were accused of cursing the kingdom, he had returned from his adventures and sided with Matthias. He didn’t know what kind of spells you had taught yourself so it was easy to pinpoint you as the curser. When you disappeared, he didn’t bother to search for you.

Cillian Murphy as Theo:

Theo is your advisor and guardian. He started off as your familiar, a raven then when you became lady of the stronghold, Stefan transformed him into a human. Theo is devoted to you and protects you at all costs. He develops a strong bond with you, deeper than a familiar would. He wishes to see you happy as he has never seen you smile since you came to the stronghold.

Author’s Notes: Heavily inspired by the mobile game, The Arcana. I loved that game and always wondered what if you, the main character, got betrayed by everyone. I didn’t want to make a Arcana fanfic about it since it would be so out of characters for the main cast of the game. So here we are!

Und seine Familie. Damit beenden wir früher als erwartet unsere wohlwollende Sichtung der Daniel-Craig-Bonds im Zusammenhang tatsächlich viel wohlwollender, als wir angefangen haben, haben aber auch keine Ahnung, wie sie da wieder raus kommen wollen.
