Rebel year - ch 1/6 - Nothing to gawk at
Tumblr media
With Gareth becoming the only heir to the title, all eyes are on him but he has other plans as he forges his own path.
Characters mentioned here belong to @that-scouse-wizard @kc-and-co
“Honestly, of all the things that could have happened this year.” Gareth mumbled under his breath as he paced back and forth, a deep frown set on his young face as his mind worked tirelessly, his remembering to straighten his features because wrinkles were not a good thing, yet he still continued to rant as he rubbed his forehead “First this, then that, it is like I cannot get any rest.” He continued to speak, ignoring the stares of the students as he marched towards the Quidditch pitch.
The bright sun shining above him proved to be an even bigger irritating factor as he squinted his eyes, cursing towards the clouds above. The year has been eventful for certain, especially with the circumstances surrounding his family. With his oldest brother dying of dragon pox after returning from one of his charity visits and the other getting disowned on multiple counts of inappropriate behavior, summer has been grey inside the Farr mansion. And cold, most definitely cold, as if all colors faded from it.
However Gareth had plans, plans that would foil his parents and their untimely attention and plans for him, but until then he needed entertainment, he needed rest, but what he needed more than anything was to show that headmaster what he could do. The nerve, attending the funeral as if his sleezy moustache belonged within the halls of his home. He did not even properly remember Gareth’s name, called him Garry, the cheek of him.
And then when he was finally free from home and school started once more he was faced with pity stares from the students, questions he would much rather avoid and girls, older ones at that talking to him left and right, because of course they would. He was but the only heir left to take over the title. The future Duke of Grafton.
Oh how he hated even the very resonance of the words inside his head, let alone having them spoken out loud.
Passing the overhead leading towards the pitch, he finally could stop squinting as he checked around the oddly bouncy grass for any familiar faces. Spotting a messy set of curls and recognizing the “do not bother me” boy in the distance he quickly jogged all the way towards the young Gryffindor.
“Just the person I was looking for.” Cledwyn turned around, practically glaring at Gareth.
“What?! Are you talking to me?” the scowl was replaced by deep confusion as he stared at the Slytherin up and down, taking a step back and then another as Gareth tried to wrap an arm around his shoulders, barely touching him. Free of his touch, he blinked at him as Gareth started talking.
Sure they knew each other, some classes they attended together, sometimes they passed each other in the halls, but they never truly conversed outside of sitting and reading inside the same space. Gareth was far too eager about every subject known to man, his attention changing as the wind under his broom, but as he looked at the boy in front of him he could clearly see a change in him.
There was a darkness behind his eyes, accompanied by sadness few should experience at such a young age.
He did read the papers, he knew the tragedy that fell upon his family, but he felt it was not his place to say anything.
But Gareth forced himself to sit straighter, to smirk, not smile which was unnerving in a sense since he used to be a bright child. Perhaps far too bright for the house he was put in. Maybe the Sorting Hat knew things that were to happen and how one’s soul would change.
“What do you need exactly?” Cledwyn asked as he practically zoned out of the conversation and back in and somehow Gareth was still speaking, yet he did not know exactly what about.
Pointing his finger at the broom he was holding, he mentioned as if it was the most normal thing in the world “I require your broom. Just to borrow it for a day.”
Gripping it tighter, Cledwyn held his ground despite a voice in his head telling him to take another step away for good measure “Since when do you fly?”
Sighing, Gareth refrained from pinching the bridge of his nose “I do not, not in the sense you do, but let me be frank, you do not really need it.”
“Excuse me?” Cledwyn asked perplex.
“Well with Black cancelling Quidditch, what use could you possibly have for it outside of the pitch?”
“I still need to train for when it will be allowed again. And no, I’m not giving you my broom, we barely know each other so don’t act like we’re friends Farr.”
Pressing a hand against his chest, Gareth shook his head, eyes closing “You wound me deeply. I cannot fandom what I did in order to gain such a gruff response however I am willing to let it go if you would reconsider. Plus, it might actually benefit you in the long run.”
“No.” he stated turning around and walking towards the changing tents.
Hearing a joyous laugh behind him, Gareth turned to look at Oliver Gerard “Well that was painful to watch.”
Rolling his eyes, Gareth’s face suddenly lit as bright at the sun above their faces “Indeed, but I have to hand it to him, his stubbornness is endearing. Casting that aside tell me oh dear Gryffindor captain, what is the price for that broom in your hand?”
Lifting his brows, Oliver smiled “Please tell me you won’t be asking everyone on the pitch.”
“No.” Gareth stated walking closer to him “But I can tell you there is a plan in motion to help all Quidditch lovers.”
Shaking his head amused, Oliver leaned his head against the handle of his broom “And since when are you a Quidditch lover?”
“I am not.” Gareth stated nonchalantly “However this school needs to return to a sense of some normality, with all that has been happening. And I have a way to get Quidditch back in the curriculum.”
“I’m listening.” Oliver looked at Gareth, attention piqued.
“No, no” he shook his index finger in front of his face “you trust me and enjoy the benefits. Would it not be an ego boost to know you contributed to saving quidditch?”
“As long as I don’t have to hear the headmaster complain and we get to play.” He extended the broom “Make it good, I can’t wait.” Gareth blinked in surprise as he took the broom from him and Oliver walked passed him “Just don’t ruin it.”
“No threat, I can replace it if things go astray.”
Storing the broom in a secure place for the time being, Gareth left the pitch and the sunshine in favor of soft lights and hushed whispers, the smell of books engulfing him when he entered the library. After a rather long walk around, he managed to locate the person he was searching for. Sitting next to Jin, his eyes scanned the tittle of the book he was holding before he cleared his throat.
Lifting his eyes for a second, Jin offered a polite nod towards him “How may I help you my friend?”
“You know how we have been saying this year had been tedious at best with everything happening?” Jin nodded once more, eyes focusing back on the words in his book, Gareth scoffing at the fact that he was being ignored. Sitting down next to him, he nudged him gently in order to gain his attention “I know you are craftly and that you once mentioned being versed in reproducing handwriting.”
“Slip of the tongue.” He stated dryly, a lesson learned shortly after when conversing with people. However what Gareth said next managed to gain his attention fully. A promise of a forbidden book from the Restricted Section, all for a price of course “State it.”
“I need you to forge the handwriting of the headmaster.”
Jin’s brows rose, eyes widening “I do assume you will be supplying a copy of one of his letters as well.”
“Of course.”
Nodding, Jin agreed as long as nothing would be traced back to him. However as much as he enjoyed the prize to come, seeing the changes in the young Slytherin did not sit well with him. But then again he has not attended in order to make friends, but to gain knowledge.
However when the following day found him face to face with Gareth once more and a heavy looking book in his bag, Jin could not contain the surprised expression crossing his face “Have you even slept?”
“No time for rest, honestly.” Handing him the bag, Jin transferred the book in his own before Gareth also took out a letter from the headmaster, placing it in front of him “Good enough? It has almost all the letters normally used.”
“Quite the eye I have to admit. How did you get in both locations undetected?”
“Wealth.” He scoffed, sitting across from him, a yawn escaping his mouth “I mentioned what should be wrote. I will handle the delivery. When can I expect the letter to be ready?”
Placing the papers in his breast pocket, Jin mentioned he needed a few days.
“Good, I have enough on my plate to fill the time in between.”
Curiosity got the better of him, Jin eventually asking “Did something happen in the Restricted Section?”
Looking around in order to ensure no one was listening in, Gareth leaned in “I almost bumped into Sallow, I swear that guy talks way too much even when he should not. Luckily Peeves got to him, however he was not alone.”
“I guess that is your next mission?” Jin smiled opening the book on his lap.
“Perhaps. You shall have to wait and see.” Getting up, he patted his shoulder “See me when you are done. Looking forward to the outcome.”
“Of course.” Jin smirked as he watched him walking away “What a troublesome child.”

I think even funnier than Anakin being a Big War Hero is if he was like. The Temple’s resident tech guy. Cal or Kanan find out who Darth Vader is and they’re like ‘the guy who reset my password???’

Rebel year - ch 6/6 - Endings are the new beginnings
Tumblr media
One of Gareth’s plans manages to come to fruition.
Oliver in mention belongs to @kc-and-co , Cledwyn belongs to @that-scouse-wizard
It happened as it was told. Gareth lost interest in searching for wild rumors, especially regarding ancient magic. When asked he simply stated he moved on to the next big project. He could not remember the interaction had with the Crane siblings either, however they kept an eye out for him regardless of what the young royal could actually recall.
But what Gareth did not forget was his mission to save Quidditch and with his attention set back on the main goal he had that year, apart from rebelling against his parents, his focus was sharper than ever. He made it his mission to know where the headmaster and flying teacher were. He followed through with interactions and his owl was trained to come to him and tap him on the shoulder with its beak whenever letters were received by them.
But it was one day as lunch was just starting, that madame Kogawa joined the professors, a big smile on her face refusing to subside. Gareth watched carefully, his spot at the table being the closest to the professors. As soon as headmaster Black strut across the great hall, the flight professor almost leapt from her chair in order to meet him halfway.
“Professor Black this is wonderful news. As difficult as reaching this decision was, I must thank you for changing your mind.”
He looked at her slightly confused as he tried to recall what was that he did “While I do enjoy the sentiment I must ask you to be a tad more specific. After all, a lot of praise is deserved for running such a prestigious school.”
As he puffed his chest lightly, madame Kogawa resisted the urge to roll her eyes and Gareth laugh as he eavesdropped “I am talking about Quidditch specifically. I have honestly lost all hope in seeing them play this year, but you have managed to surprise me.”
“Excuse me what?”
Taking it as his cue to make his move, Gareth approached the two “Headmaster, apologies for the intrusion, there is a letter from my father that requires your immediate attention.”
“Not now boy, I have more important matters.”
Holding up the letter, he shoved it closer to Black’s face “Oh I insist, this too is very important. If I do recall, the Duke of Grafton was quite displeased with Quidditch not being played at school anymore.”
Taking the letter, he opened it, the magical seal of the Farr family being broken. As he skimmed the letter, Black went pale, eyes lifting to look at Gareth and the flight professor. Letting out a nervous chuckle he nodded towards Gareth who turned around to leave, but not before looking over at Oliver, winking at him.
Approaching the stand, he cleared his throat, announcing Quidditch was no longer banned at Hogwarts, the school erupting in cheers and whistles, however Gareth relished in how his hand shook as he gripped the letter from his father tighter and tighter, knuckles turning white.
A few days later after dinner, Gareth’s attention was called out by someone. Turning around he saw Cledwyn “Got a minute?”
“Depends, will you actually talk to me in that minute?”
“Follow me.”
Blinking in surprise, Gareth fell in line with him as Cledwyn marched on, both walking outside of the Great Hall “Are you going to tell me what this is about or just bark orders at me?”
“Just come on, you’ll see.”
Despite asking several more questions, Cledwyn did not bother to reply back until they reached the Quidditch pitch and vanished in the changing rooms, before emerging with two brooms, offering one to Gareth.
“I actually do not require a broom anymore. Oliver was kind enough to help in that regard, unlike you.”
Scoffing, Cledwyn still held it out “We’re going for a small flying lesson around the school, I’m still not giving you my broom.”
“How positively charming you are, however I must decline until you tell me the exact reason why you wish to go flying with me. You never know, you might be planning on threatening my life once up there.”
Rolling his eyes, Cledwyn pushed the broom in Gareth’s hands “I heard you saved Quidditch.”
“Barely lifted a finger.” Gareth smirked, finally getting on the broom, both hovering in the air.
When asked why he did what he did, he did not really have a proper response. Maybe he was bored, maybe it was another project or perhaps he just needed a bit of entertainment in his life and the sport everyone loved would provide just that.
“Thank you.” Cledwyn said looking over at Gareth “Also if you want to ever talk about your brothers, you can come to me.”
Taking out his wand, Gareth stared at the headmaster’s office in the distance “I cannot fathom why I would do that. I am perfectly fine on my own.”
But Cledwyn knew that was not the case “Offer still stands. What are you doing with the wand?”
Casting a spell, red sparks flew in the air “Properly celebrating.”
A loud bang was heard followed by a few others, fireworks going off in the distance, a message sprawled across the night sky “Black is a troll.” Looking over at Gareth, Cledwyn’s mouth swung open. Seeing his expression, Gareth bit on his lower lip, however he could not contain the laughter bubbling to the surface. Throwing his head back, he laughed almost losing balance if not for Cledwyn steading him.
“You are trouble you are.” He stated, however he too gave a small smile.
It was after all the first time Gareth laughed that year.
