Thoughts on Hildegard Von Bingen?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
love her so much I think she is the coolest medieval person ever and I love her writing and her music and I made a standee of that manuscript illustration of her getting visions and a painting of her cosmic egg for my medieval manuscript section of my animal crossing island (above). also have a painting I did of her cosmic egg on my wall. also one time when I was doing my MA I was driving home from my tutoring job blasting the hildegard song linked below with my windows down and made prolonged direct eye contact with my advisor at a stop sign as she was driving by (also windows down, heard me blasting hildegard)

Saint Richardis, also known as Richgard, Richardis of Swabia and Richarde de Souabe in French (c. 840 – 18 September, between 894 and 896 AD), was the Holy Roman Empress as the wife of Charles the Fat. She was renowned for her piety and was the first abbess of Andlau. Repudiated by her husband, Richardis later became a Christian model of devotion and just rule. She was canonised in 1049.

Welcoming Hildegard in Heaven
Tumblr media
Some of my favorite stories about St. Hildegard von Bingen are about the friendships she had. First was Jutta von Sponheim (left), who taught Hildegard to read and write and probably to sing and play music too. When she passed away, Hildegard succeeded her as abbess of Disibodenberg. Second was monk Volmar (second from left), who encouraged Hildegard in her moments of doubt; his death was especially heartbreaking for Hildegard. Like Jutta and Hildegard, Richardis von Stade (right) was from a noble family and stayed in Disibodenberg and later Rupertsberg under Hildegard. Against Hildegard's wishes, Richardis became an abbess in a separate abbey. Her unexpected death shortly after leaving Rupertsberg broke Hildegard's heart. I could just imagine how happy their reunion in Heaven must have been in September 17, 1179.

Hl. Richardis

Do you ever feel… like a plastic bag drifting through the sea? You might relate to the glass octopus (Vitreledonella richardi). This cephalopod can be found in tropical and subtropical waters around the world. Named for its transparent skin, it inhabits depths of around 3,000 ft (914 m) where sunlight doesn’t penetrate. Scientists think its see-through appearance is a form of camouflage that protects it from predators and conceals it from prey!

Deep-sea siphonophore
Siphonophores are gelatinous animals composed of specialized parts growing together in a chain. Each part (zooid) is structurally similar to other solitary animals, but the zooids are all attached to each other rather than living independently.
This siphonophore, Erenna richardi, can be identified by the massive clusters of tentilla (the side branches of the tentacle) at the end of the tail (siphosome). In Monterey Bay, this species has been observed at average depths of about 1,100 meters (3,600 feet). These siphonophores are armed with a battery of powerful stinging tentacles and researchers have seen them ensnaring fish just above the seafloor. Historically, gelatinous animals have been challenging to study. Their delicate nature makes them difficult to collect, especially from the ocean’s depths. By using deep-diving robots—remotely operated vehicles, or ROVs—MBARI and our collaborators are revealing the dazzling diversity of delicate drifters that lies beneath the surface.
