do you like reading about tarlos having an awkward encounter in an adult store? if so, this snippet is for you!

this is from the fic affectionately known as 'Call Me' that i am successfully co-parenting with @rmd-writes (tag, you're it!)

There’s a head of brown hair that’s clearly visible from over a row of very…interesting paraphernalia. Even before the man turns around, Carlos knows who it is. It’s a vibe, an aura, an unfortunate consequence of being extremely attracted to someone who is in precisely the wrong place at precisely the wrong time. Carlos was wrong. Seeing TK Strand in a sex shop might be worse than seeing his parents. “Savannah,” he says, coughing awkwardly. “I've, um, I’ve actually got to go somewhere. Emergency. Don’t worry about the—” “Are you sure?” she asks, far too loudly. “I can show you the options real quick—” “Officer Reyes?” Fuck. Carlos is completely fucked. He feels rooted to the spot, unable to take a breath as his eyes dart over the shelf of unnervingly accurate, plastic, human body parts. Clear green eyes blink back at him, equally as shocked. “Strand,” he replies, his voice sounding far less shaky than it feels. “Hi.” “I’ll leave you to it,” Savannah says, looking between them furtively before scurrying off between the aisles. Carlos kind of wants to throw a dildo at her. “What are you— I probably shouldn’t ask that,” TK stammers, looking adorable with his wide eyes and his unguarded expression. When Carlos’ eyes drop to TK’s hands, he sees he’s holding an ungodly amount of lube and a small silver plug.  Huh. Interesting.

Alright. I'm going to do two scenes, one gif each. Which I feel is still within the spirit of the rules I put in place. (I mostly wanted to avoid doing longer sections for any scene because that would throw me into the decision-making paralysis that steals my creative energy in the first place.)

eeeeeeeeee chef alex is an au of The Bear but a character study on alex and his motivations and neuroses and what happens when he comes back home to help run his family sandwich shop! i am so so excited it's going to be a lot to chew on for me and a whole new challenge!!!

the angst is family expectations / personal pressure related and it is so fun to explore bc carmy and alex are so similar and i think alex would really end up like carmy if he didn't have the right support system / people around him just based on how he pushes himself / seeks support and validation. it's so interesting to me bc alex and I are so so similar and i relate to carmy so much in so many ways too! can't wait to project heavily on my comfort characters lmfao

I'm sorry I missed this a couple weeks ago! I'm always on mobile so I apparently missed several asks 🙃🙃🙃

The wip you're referring to is a firstprince au of one of my all time favorite movies, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days :)

Henry is a soft-spoken but confident author employed by a harlequin-esque publishing company, chugging away at churning out what he feels like are absolute shite bodice-rippers for profit like a content machine until he can find a way to publish his actual life's work, a deeply personal novel. But for now bodice-rippers pay the bills.

Alex is a charismatic advertising exec who is trying to break into a new market for which his boss and coworkers think he's ill suited, and of course he MUST prove them wrong.

Henry posits to his cubicle-mate Pez that if anyone actually did anything in these books in real life their partners would die laughing or run away screaming. Pez says he'll take that bet bc he thinks Henry could literally recite Shakespeare mid-coitus (complete with plastic skull held aloft) and his partners would eat it up.

Alex says he can sell anything, up to and including himself, to anyone regardless of their initial opinion of him. His coworker Hunter, who's a little jealous of Alex's rise to success, calls his bluff.

They happen to be caught in the same bar on the same night. Bets on both sides are set in motion.

If you've seen the movie, then you know this is where the chaos ensues :)

27. your favorite part of the writing process

Oh, it's definitely sharing my ideas and/or words with other creators—and not just for the dopamine hit. I mean, yeah, I love being cursed at because of something I've written, obviously. Who doesn't long for their closest friends to tell them to go to hell? But it's more... like... the community aspect of fandom is what really motivates me, personally. I love sharing bits of my work with y'all and getting your thoughts (and giving you, in particular, an opportunity to make my stuff more painful lmfao). I love plotting out my ideas with other creatives. It's the best part. Hands down.

28. your least favorite part of the writing process

So, I've recently come to accept that periods of Not Writing are part of the Writing Process. We all go through lulls and phases in our lives where writing is hard, whether because of personal things that are happening, or just because our brains need breaks. I hate taking breaks against my will, lmao. I'm learning to be kinder to myself about it, but that doesn't mean that I don't hate when all I wanna do is write and my brain is off in the Maldives without me or something.

30. share a fic you’re especially proud of

Well, to that end... I'm particularly proud of ’till the gravity’s too much right now because it was the first fic I posted after the worst year of my life, thanks to some very supportive friends and some blorbos I finally allowed myself to write.

Rae, I hope you know that I suck at these because I feel like I have the most uninteresting life going. Like a random fact about me could be "I drink more Diet Coke than could ever be considered healthy"...

I started going to a Bootcamp-style fitness class with the intention of improving my fitness. Not only has that happened but we have discovered that I have a talent for weights. I can now lift 160kg. (352lbs for the weirdos who don't like metric)

I once went on national radio to talk about being asexual because I tuned in almost randomly and found it was the topic of conversation

My family chat text thread was set up predominently to share pictures of my (then) newborn nephew. Nearly 11 years later it is still called "Pictures of [CHILD]" and he is thrilled to have such a chat name. He's got his own number now and may be added into the group and no, we cannot change the name.

Maddie! For nice ask week, and in honour of food fic I have three questions for you:

what is your favourite sweet food?

thank you rae!! <3 gonna go with the first thing that comes to mind otherwise i’ll truly sit here for hours ajdnsjd

- sweet: love a pastry/baked good. sometimes splurge on rough days at work for a cinnamon bun with my coffee and it’s a perfect little sweet treat.

- savoury: with it being autumn, i’ve been super into roasted vegetables. smokey and a little spicy. also potatoes in any form.

- memorable meal: i’m feeling nostalgic so! when i did my masters, it was a september-august program and in total there were nine of us and we truly became a united front. we all had the same classes and would be working with similar faculty members and we had a little room in our department that we made our little on-campus home; it’s where we had our breakdowns/therapy sessions/rants about classes/floor time/takeout before evening classes. in april, after everything was done class-wise and teaching assistant-wise, the department puts on a little “conference” of sorts for us to kind of give previews of what we’ll be researching in front of family, faculty, and previous and upcoming students. it’s a lot of pressure and anxiety (as the whole year was)but exciting, too, over seeing everyone’s work come together. that night, one of my friends has us over at his place and we drank and goofed around with the lights off and music blaring, and one of the girls just….starts making pasta and it’s 1:22am and we’re weepy and tipsy and a little high and everyone’s sharing their love for each other as we dive into this truly delicious meal. it isn’t anything fancy but it’s homemade and on the tail-end of a whirlwind of a year and just…SO good. i think as someone who felt isolated and lonely in countless high school/university friend groups and even now as school’s over and “adulthood” is here, i think back on it so fondly.

idk, y'all live so far away. i think it would have to be @celeritas2997. she wouldn't like it, but she's going to have to live with it. plus, she'd visit me in prison when i inevitably couldn't deal with the guilt and turned myself in.

🦷 share some personal wisdom or a life hack you swear on?

if you don't mind travelling in the back of the plane (read: waiting for everyone to de-plane before you) and you're travelling with one other person, make sure you check the seating options at the rear of the aircraft when you select your seats. sometimes in bigger planes (A380s etc) there are options for two seats side by side right down the back. then you don't have to have a random sit with you and you can go to the bathroom guilt free 😌 this hack has made my life so much better on long-haul (read: 10 hour plus) flights.

🥐 name one internet reference that will always make you laugh? 

i have a 'iconic memes' folder on my phone and all of them make me lose my shit. i have a soft spot for those really stupid medieval memes.

🐚 do you like or dislike surprises?

obvious from my anxious girl aesthetic but i HATE surprises. unless someone wants to organise a surprise birthday party for me because i hate organising things for my birthday (which is why i haven't had a birthday thing in like 15 years).

Weekend WIP Game

Thank you for tagging me, @rmd-writes and @thisbuildinghasfeelings!

I know I am very late to this, but it is still technically the weekend here in the Pacific time zone, so here we go. I'll be using the questions for Artists/GIF makers. (There are also questions for writers in @welcometololaland's original post!)

Rules: List your WIPs below (if you only work on one project at a time, feel free to include future WIPs/ideas!) then answer the following questions. Then, tag as many people as you have WIPs (or more).

1. WIP List:

I am so afraid to see these all written out in a way where I can count them. [deep breath] This is a rather mixed-up list of gif sets for 911 Lone Star, Schitt's Creek, and The X-Files. Also, since they're gif sets, they don't really have titles, just nicknames:

2. Which WIP is your most complex?

Oh gosh. Anything that involves coloring of more than one scene, really. That's what slows me down. And pretty much all of these fall into that category. Which is a big part of why they're not done yet.

3. Do any of your WIPs involve you using a technique/style that you haven't used before? What inspired you to try it?

Um. Possibly? I'm not far enough along to know for sure, but I think a couple of them might involve trying out a new text treatment.

4. Which WIP do you expect will take you the longest?

I am historically a very bad judge of this. Lol. There are plenty of potential obstacles in that list. I'm afraid to jinx it/make things worse by saying anything specific.

5. Which WIP are you finding the most enjoyable to create?

The "lizard arc" set has been very enjoyable to play with. And I suspect that "he's a jungle cat" will be very fun to eventually get back to.

6. Do you have a favourite character to draw/stitch/paint/depict? Are they in many of your WIP projects?

Hmmm. Not really. I mean, I certainly tend to focus on my favorite ships, but I can't really pick a favorite from that group.

7. Which WIP do you experience the most self-doubt about. Why?

All of them. Because I am self-taught and constantly second guessing absolutely everything.

8. Have any of your WIPs been struck by the curse of creator's block?

I suppose so. Although It's more lack of energy or just… utter frustration that results in a WIP getting a time out.

9. Do any of your WIPs contain characters outside the main ship? How are you finding creating those?

Yeah, definitely. There are a couple on that list that focus on other relationships.

10. What emotions are you hoping to convey through your WIPs?

It varies. Some are angsty. Some are meant to be funny. But I think, in general, they are all trying to convey love.

11. Are there any features/details you are finding challenging in your WIPs?

[gestures wildly at the lighting teams on every show, thwarting my best efforts to see what's going on]

12. Which WIP has the most complex shading/colouring?

Don't know yet. All of them. Lol. I can tell you that the "fancy dinner" set has been in time out for months now. Because of lighting and coloring.

13. Which WIP has the most complex background?

Not sure this one applies to me.

14. Which WIP do you have the highest expectations for?

Oh, I really don't know. My opinions here change all the time.

15. Do you dream about any of your WIPs?

I normally do not remember my dreams. But very recently, I dreamt that I had finished one of those sets. I was very disappointed to wake up and realize it wasn't true.

16. Do any of your WIPs have particular complexities that your other art doesn't?

Hmm, I don't think so.

17. Are any of your WIPs commissions?

No, but some of them are friendly requests or things that came about from chatting here on tumblr.

18. Do you have a character that is more difficult to draw/stitch/paint/depict? Are they in many of your WIP projects?

I'm going to go with Patrick Brewer. That boy's face just… goes nuclear bright whenever I try to brighten a scene overall. There are a lot of rather pale characters on that show, but they take pretty well to coloring/brightening. He does not.

19. Tell us one thing we don't know about one or more of your WIPs.

Um. Some items have been on that list for years. They're not abandoned, I promise. I am just not in charge of the creative process.

What no one tells you about dating your college roommate is that sometimes it doesn't work out. Sometimes you go on four dates before he breaks up with you because: "I'm sorry, Henry, I just need someone I can be stupid with, you know? That crazy, embarrassing yourself kind of fun. It's nothing you've done wrong, at all. Just a mismatch. I want to stay friends, though."

The worst part was, Alex wasn't even wrong. Henry used to be that kind of fun—would don a feather boa and do karaoke with Pez, butchering the classics and not caring who saw him—but then his dad died and he retreated into himself. Alex had been the first real piercing of that veil of grief, but… well. If it wasn't meant to be, then that's that.

Henry focuses on school, on therapy, on healing. Being roommates with Alex is awkward for a while, but they find their way back to friendship.

And Henry finds his way back to himself. To the fun, carefree guy he was. He digs out the boa one night, says "Alexa, play Wonderwall," and dramatically serenades Alex until Alex is crying with laughter. Until Alex kisses him.
