Sailor Moon Classic Episode 39.

I am of the opinion that, in the anime canon, there is no meaningful distinction between Usagi and Princess Serenity’s personalities. Whilst this is not exactly realistic given that Usagi and Serenity would’ve grown up in very different circumstances, I believe based upon everything we know of Serenity in the anime canon her personality is identical to Usagi’s; at least within the context of the situations we see her in. The fact that Usagi literally transforms into Princess Serenity in the anime, but is not acting in ways that are any different from how she acted when not transformed into Serenity I think is the proof in the pudding.

So in the anime, Usagi is Serenity and Serenity is Usagi. The unique soul that was once the Moon Princess in the Silver Millennium and is now the ordinary school girl in the 20th century has several indelible and inevitable personality traits that will simply always be there, regardless of any other traits she might also develop from the environment she grows up in.

The counterargument to this however is episode 39 of the original 1992 Sailor Moon anime. In this episode we are told/shown Princess Serenity was great at ice skating but Usagi clearly sucks. Serenity was a dignified elegant Princess and Usagi...ain’t...

So...checkmate right?

Well...allow me to propose a theory.

So, first of all we could simply state that the gravity on the Moon and Earth are simply different. Whilst the Moon of Sailor Moon’s universe is different to the real one in that it has Earth-like gravity and a breathable atmosphere,* there is no guarantee that the gravity is identical. This might then account for why Usagi is so clumsy in general compared to the other Senshi, who originate from celestial bodies much larger than the Moon and therefore might have gravity that is more similar to Earth’s.**

BUT I think there is a more interesting explanation found deeper in the very same episode. Noticeably, Usagi is still clumsy when on ice even when her physicality is enhanced by becoming Sailor Moon.

That is...until the evil brainwashed Tuxedo Mask shows up.

With his assistance and encouragement Sailor Moon suddenly can skate, and perform pretty advanced feats at that!

Now am I suggesting this is simply ‘the power of love’. Yes and no.

I am not suggesting literal love energy powered up Usagi’s skating skills. Rather, that there was a psychological aspect to her ability to perform.

As many athletes will tell you, their mental state is as critical in their performance as their physical state. Whether a sprinter or a boxer, if their ‘head isn’t in the game’ they are not going to perform at the best of their abilities, indeed they might even have lost before they have begun. The mind and body are, after all, fundamentally linked together.

We have no way of knowing what Princess Serenity’s psychological state was when she was ice skating, but given that the flashbacks depict her as roughly the age Usagi was, is it a stretch to imagine she was at that time in a relationship with Prince Endymion? Especially since in the anime there did not seem to be any kind of taboo about their relationship?*** In other words Serenity is relaxed, she’s perhaps confident, she’s happy, in love, maybe to the point where she feels like she’s ‘floating on air’.

Usagi in episode 39 is none of those things. Whilst she is in love with Mamoru/Endymion/Tuxedo Mask she has been having nightmares about his death and the fall of the Silver Millennium. She is anxious about his safety as he has been abducted and brainwashed by the Dark Kingdom. She wants to get him back but also might have to fight him to do it.**** And she at the same time deeply wishes her life could simply go back to normalcy.

For the perkiness and good humour Usagi is presented with in episode 39, in context she is not deep down a happy bunny at the moment (if you pardon the pun). And a lot of that is directly tied to the state of her relationship with Mamoru at the moment, or lack thereof.

She presumes she will be able to ice skate because Serenity could do it. She is aware that Luna, Artemis and the others are hoping/expecting her to be more of a Princess in order to unlock the Silver Crystal’s power (which seems more of an instinctual thing more than anything else). But putting her mind in the headspace of Serenity is not likely to make Usagi relaxed, happy or tap into some past life muscle memory when you think about it. Because tapping into Serenity’s memories on a subconscious level likely brings into stark relief how much she has lost since then and how shitty the current situation is. The Moon Kingdom is wrecked and her lover has been lost to her again, and this time he isn’t even just dead, he wants to potentially kill her.

Usagi’s mental state however shifts when Tuxedo mask shows up to help her. Whilst she intellectually knows he is still Evil Endymion, in that moment he is helping her, protecting her, even encouraging and complimenting her. So, it’s not a million miles away from when her life was actually good (or at least better), whether that was being blissfully in love with Endymion in the Silver Millennium or at least swooning over the sexy and mysterious Tuxedo Mask as Sailor Moon mere months ago. In this moment Usagi can skate better, that past life muscle memory does kick in because (temporarily) she can feel like everything is better, everything is the way it should be (or closer to how it should be anyway).

I think we can observe a similar phenomenon occurring in episodes 22 and 37. The latter takes place during the Evil Endymion run of episodes where Usagi attempts to train as a princess but proves herself to be a bad ballroom dancer.

However, in episode 22 she danced perfectly competently when her partner was Tuxedo Mask, her past life memories even explictely resurfacing in that moment.

*In the manga the Moon Kingdom existed under an environmental dome but IIRC no such thing was mentioned in the anime.

**Whilst Jupiter is mostly gas, in fiction it has traditionally been depicted as having more gravity because of its size and therefore aliens from Jupiter have been depicted as incredibly strong. E.g. Marvel Comics’ character Charlie-27. This would in turn account for Sailor Jupiter’s super strength. On a side note Jupiter was by far the best ice skater in the Silver Millennium.

***In the manga, it is explicitly stated that it Moon and Earth people fraternising is a sin. Nothing like that exists in the anime however.

****Not for nothing, but the literal episode prior he came very close to harming her directly.

Bridal Carry and SanNami Reconciliation

Show me the f**king panel did Oda ever draw Sanji carry other female character in bridal way other than Nami? Tell me another panel how many times does Oda draw Sanji ever carry Nami in bridal style? Please don’t throw anime screencap at me whether it’s from adding scene in TV series episode, filler, opening song, or movie of him ever carrying Robin, Viola, Carina, etc.

The answer for 1st question is NO. No, he didn’t.

And for question number 2, although animator make Sanji did it to Nami several times, Oda only ever makes it in manga TWICE.

When?

Now, tell me why a man carrying a woman like Sanji did to Nami is called bridal style?

A man carries a woman in his arms — one arm under her legs and the other supporting her back like a groom carrying his bride. It usually denotes or foreshadows a romantic relationship between the characters or a major difference in their physical strength or both. It's also called a princess carry.

TV Tropes -- Bridal Carry

The tropes calls it bridal carry but we know it’s simply called bridal because it’s how a groom carrying his bride.

Now, back to the question number 3: When did Oda ever draw Sanji carry Nami in bridal style?

Nah, Oda LITERALLY took it in CONTEXT that so far Sanji ever carried Nami that way just twice when they are involved in forced WEDDING: Thriller Bark and Whole Cake Island. Nami and Absalom never made the kiss of oath, so did Sanji and Pudding. But Oda make BRIDE Nami carried by Sanji in bridal style and GROOM Sanji carry Nami in bridal style too.

As it isn’t enough, in both weddings, Oda draw the bridal carry started with Sanji catching Nami from fall like a knight in shining armor rescuing a princess (as it’s also shown in Leo x Mansherry scene). Plus, in WCI, Oda needs to draw Pudding in shocked/jealous expression in small panel next to SanNami bridal carry panel. By that, Nami is literally a Dorobou Neko, Boyfriend/Husband/Lover Stealer. Once again, referring Thriller Bark, Lola has called Nami with her epithet because she thought Nami steal Absalom from her.

TV Tropes -- Bridal Carry also said: “When the participants aren’t romantically involved, expect fans to cite this as "proof” that they really are.“

I ask you. When is a wedding never seen with romance theme even for Sanji and Pudding who don’t exactly love each other? When is a wedding never involved with romance undertone between the two characters especially when one of them participate in wedding crash of another for each other?

Now, the only missing between Sanji and Nami is the vow and kiss of oath. Maybe it’ll happen in EoS.... maybe yes, maybe not.

Though, anti-shipper may think SanNami shippers only cares about the bridal carry because we keep reposting the scene. No, we don’t. As neutral readers finding how cute it is when Sanji and Nami smile at each other, we also acknowledge that it is the most beautiful scene after all the shits went through between them that they had been parted away since Zou. Who made Sanji smile broadly and genuine in this arc? Pudding because he forced himself to be happy with the marriage for Baratie and nakama’s sake and that he had to act during the wedding? Big Mom because she promise him to keep his nakama safe? Luffy when the captain only was convinced that his cook is okay after seeing his interaction with Nami through mirror that he’s back to his usual self? No. And finally, after the death glare he gave and that he stated he could’ve not looked at her face since that time; he eventually smiles genuinely at her. And she smiles happily knowing it’s Sanji.

So, reread it from Zou, look back at how Sanji tried not to involve Nami in danger but she’s captured because she’s worried of him, and then a past strike him back and to save his nakama he had to say goodbye and left her cry in Luffy’s shoulder, look at how Nami keep pushing Luffy to get Sanj back, look at how shocked she was when she smiled reuniting with him but he replied her with death glare, look at how afraid she is because he seriously beaten their captain, look at how hurt it is when she slapped him in teary eyes. But now, just one happy smile and it erases them all.

You can call it nakamaship, we don’t mind; but it’s undeniably Sanji and Nami’s relationship development. When two characters can make up together again after a serious fight, it makes them closer and their bond stronger. Same as how Luffy and Sanji had resolved their problem with bento.

fic: Meet Me Under the Spotlight

Rating: PG-13 Word Count: ~3200 Characters: Steve/Natasha, mentions of the ensemble Summary: The celebrity social media au no one asked for.

A/N: This started off as just an article I was writing that was supposed to be a snippet in a fic I’ve wanted to write for a while, but I had so much fun that I expanded upon it. I’ve always been a fan of those social media edits circulating Tumblr, and after I’d read a few fics that incorporated texting and social media, I’ve always wanted to try it out. So, here it is! You can also consider it a preview for the celebrity au I’m probably still planning to write.

(Also, this is very raw; as in, I sort of skimmed it for errors, because I'm leaving in a bit. But I'll come back to it for editing when I can take my time.)

‘Marvelous’ Cast Talks Shocking Season Finale and What Next Season Could Hold

It’s been a week since the Season 3 finale of ‘Marvelous’ aired and fans are still in hysterics over the state of their beloved heroes.

(Spoiler alerts below!)

Season 3′s Episode 22, “How the Mighty Fall” left Scarlet Witch held captive and under experimentation at the hands of a mysterious scientist, with Winter Soldier and Falcon quite literally at each other’s throats on how to find her. Hulk has disappeared, Thor’s powers have been seemingly sealed away for good. And just as the Captain has come to realize that Black Widow’s betrayal had ultimately been for his protection, he’s too late: Hawkeye is in a coma, and Widow’s memories have been erased.

And you’ll have to wait three whole months to see what happens next.

Upset? Yeah, so are we.

And we made sure that ‘Marvelous’ co-stars Steve Rogers and Natasha Romanoff were aware of this when Access Entertainment! caught up with them in the AE! lounge.

“He cried [when we did the table read],” Natasha had dished about Steve, who didn’t try to downplay the claim as he almost doubled over in laughter at the recollection. “We all did,” Natasha went on to admit with a laugh of her own. “With ‘Marvelous’ being supernatural, you just never know anyone’s fate and it’s fun. Fun and scary. And it’s as emotional to us as it is the fans. When we read the scene where Wanda [Maximoff, playing Scarlet Witch] is experimented on, it was already a lot to handle. Then to see her crying on the floor like that? It was tough. Such a good performance, though.”

“Wanda blows us away every day,” agreed Steve with a fond smile. Steve has always been quick to praise the talent of Wanda, whom he starred alongside in the romantic comedy Brother of the Bride that premiered the same day Wanda received the news about being cast in ‘Marvelous’. Wanda had shared with AE! before that Steve had been a big reason for her auditioning for the role in the first place. The fact that landing it could mean working alongside Natasha, one of her childhood idols, also helped.

After the emotional turmoil that the season finale put us through, it seems like they’re setting up Season 4 to be bigger and better than ever! But if the cast has a clue as to what is happening next, they’re keeping it under lock and key.

“He wants us all dead,” Natasha had joked when asked if the show’s writer/producer Nick Fury had shared some insight on where he wants to take Season 4. “No, seriously. We’re all so close and we all have a lot of fun, and yeah, we get the work done. But there’s some serious teeth-pulling and bribing on Nick’s part to get us to behave. If he had hair, he would’ve torn it all out. So he’d just kill us all off as punishment, one by one.”

“I think he’d spare you,” Steve had said in response to Natasha’s teasing. “She’s his favorite. Which isn’t an issue, because she’s everyone��s favorite!”

Speaking of sparing the Widow... with her memories gone, fans are already speculating on what Captain’s next move is going to be.

“It’s a funny one, you know? It’s a funny situation,” Steve shared when asked about how he thinks Captain and Black Widow’s dynamic will progress in the next season. “He’s always been the first person to vouch for her. He knows what she’s done, what she’s had to do, and he trusts her anyway. He’s always valued her where others haven’t. What’s funny -- well, in a bittersweet kind of way, what’s funny is that he’s also the first person to take her for granted. He doesn’t realize how much she’s come to mean to him until she can’t remember who he is, and I’m sure it’s going to be a real hard hit to be around her when she’s like this. He’ll raise hell to get her memories back.”

That’s how Steve thinks it will go, at least. And we’re sure that fans will be totally on board for that.

As for Widow? We've come to realize that maybe her lack of memories could be for the best. Sort of. “Nick and I talked about it early on,” Natasha confessed. “Widow is who she is, and acts how she acts, because of her past. She doesn’t want to get involved with anyone because she’s scared. But with Captain, she’s also curious. She feels that connection, and what’s stopping her is herself, and ultimately that’s what’s stopping him, too. Because he can read her in a way that no one else ever could, and so of course he senses her hesitation and he steps back like the gentleman he is. So without her memories, she’s going to see him frantic and desperate to help her and that’s going to open her up in a way that wouldn’t have been possible if she’d still had her memories. So that’ll be fun to play off of. It’ll, hopefully, become a ‘blessing in disguise’ sort of thing for them.”

“They need it,” Steve added as he nudged Natasha’s shoulder. “They’re both stubborn, and it’s been a long time coming.”

Yeah, we know, Steve.

Captain and Black Widow have captured the hearts of fans since Day One, and that probably has a lot to do with the natural chemistry between these co-stars off-screen. Though Steve and Natasha had yet to have worked together before both being cast in ‘Marvelous’, they’ve always acknowledged each other’s talent. Steve has said on multiple occasions that he’s been a fan of Natasha since her acting debut in The Russian Princess, and often posted his praise and support for her on social media following the premieres of her movies. When Steve landed his first leading role on HBO’s historical fiction drama “Howling Commandos”, Natasha had posted a glowing review of the show’s pilot on Instagram and paid particular attention to Steve, saying that she looked forward to seeing him “take Hollywood by storm.” Though the show came to an early conclusion just three seasons in, Steve hadn’t had any trouble getting back on his feet.

‘Marvelous’ Spoilers: Cast Teases Fans With Finale on Instagram

Last night’s episodes left fans reeling, wondering how things could get darker and more dangerous than ever in next week’s season finale. The icing on the heartache cake? This morning, the cast and crew teased fans on Instagram with photos of their on-set shenanigans while filming the finale. While it was nice to see some silliness and smiles after all of the arguing and tears from last night’s episode, fans were quick to catch on some of the ominous implications of these pictures. Such as: Tony Stark (Iron Man) decked out in fake blood and gore; the strange and daunting backdrop of a laboratory, not unlike the lab that Quicksilver had been tortured in the second half of season 2; fake ligature marks on Wanda Maximoff’s (Scarlet Witch) wrists, which can be seen as she poses with her arms around Jane Foster (head costume designer) and Darcy Lewis (head makeup artist); and Natasha Romanoff (Black Widow) in a hospital gown, laughing with Steve Rogers (Captain) as he wipes away staged tears.

Nick Fury also tweeted for the first time since teasingly responding to a few fans’ reactions to the Season 3 mid-season finale back in December. Spotted: ‘Marvelous’ Co-Stars Practically Glowing During Hawaiian Vacation

It seems like these stars are following in their characters’ footsteps!

Well, if you don’t count the superpowers.

Steve Rogers and Natasha Romanoff landed in Hawaii on Tuesday for a well deserved break after filming finished for their most intense season yet. After plans for the whole cast to vacation together fell through the cracks, Steve and Natasha -- in true Steve and Natasha fashion -- decided to do their own thing and go anyway.

Fans will probably already know that this isn’t the first time that the two ever have vacationed together. After they wrapped up a spectacular first season together, the pair joined fellow co-stars Tony Stark and Pepper Potts on a cruise along the Mediterranean, which both Tony and Pepper later revealed to have been a “spur of the moment” trip, and were pleasantly surprised when the pair agreed. Steve and Natasha then came back to the States, where Natasha would spend a week in Brooklyn with Steve to visit his parents and other fellow co-star Bucky Barnes, who has been best friends with Steve since childhood.

Though scheduling conflicts prevented the pair from spending the following summer together, it seems like they’re back at it again this year. And they seem cozier than ever! In addition to posting their personal photos together on their social media, pictures have been circulating of the two seen out and about around the Hawaiian islands, looking friendlier than ever. Which has always been the case, considering the explosive chemistry we’ve seen between them on and off screen since the beginning. But is it just us, or do things seem to be far more personal between them than before? They certainly seem to have the “honeymoon phase” glow, and lately the pair has noticeably avoided or outright ignored inquiries about a romantic relationship between them as of late. Though, that could just because they’re tired of repeating themselves. It’s been three years now.

Either way, it’s always heartwarming to see these two having so much fun whenever they’re together! Hopefully it’s forever.

Nick Fury will have one direction he’ll want to take Captain and Widow in the next season, and fans will want a dozen others. But what do Steve and Natasha hope the future will have in store for their characters?

“Wherever they are, however things may be, I hope they just stay together,” Natasha shared. “They have such a beautiful thing going on because they’ve been the one constant piece to each other amidst the chaos. And they’ve come to really depend on each other for comfort and supports, even just company. I would hate for anything to happen to that. And I personally don’t believe that anything exists for Widow that would be more important to her than remaining right by the Captain’s side. That feeling, I feel, will resonate with her even with her memories gone. She’s so tied to him that her body and her heart are going to remember what her mind can’t. That’s my prediction.”

“I agree,” Steve added. “I think that’s why Cap was just so devastated when he thought Black Widow betrayed him. It hurt him down to his very core and she knew that it would, which is why she said the things she said. To make sure he was so blindsided that he wouldn’t go near her and then wouldn’t end up in the crossfire. And that’s what makes it another huge punch to the gut when he figures out the truth. Because I think he had to have known deep down inside that Widow was looking out for him, just as she’s always been, and he held onto that sliver of hope. So I really hope this teaches him that life is too damn short and you’ve got to fight for what you love. You’ve got to.”

Now if that didn’t move you to a few tears, we don’t know what would.

And we feel a little better knowing that Natasha and Steve are hopeful for their characters’ future, as well as the future of all our beloved heroes. Nick Fury has always taken his cast and crew’s opinion into consideration before taking these characters into the next chapter, and it makes the show bigger and better than ever.

I watched the Adventure Time finale...

I’m proud that show was able to last as long as it did, especially with just how... kind of batshit insane the production got in its later seasons. I’m glad it kickstarted the careers of many great creators who have gone either to helm or create their own unique and diverse shows. I can tell that, at least in the early days, there was a big brewing pot of ideas and the “anything goes” mentality allowed different creators to tackle what they wanted with the program. The likes of many popular shows today are either rooted or inspired and admired by this show. And that’s fantastic. The finale was underwhelming. Truthfully I never really kept up with the show, so that’s probably part of it. AT came on the air when I was in college and when I wasn’t busy with games, studies, etc. the only show I tended to really watch at the time was Phineas and Ferb (and you can mock me all you want about that, I still stand by that that was a great show (that also had a nice run... until either Disney or the creators are trying to ruin it/recreate it without being the same show with their new product, but that’s another dumb talk for another time)). Adventure Time would have initially premiered when I was in my Junior of college, so yeah, probably didn’t watch it that much but respected a lot of the voice talent and kind of silly style the show had going for it. I’d watch it on and off through the years and get invested in some of the bigger multiparters such as the return of the Lich (never really understood it too much other than it was just evil), the really cute relationship Finn had with the Flame Princess until someone went “we don’t know how to write this and this is a show about adventure!” so they kind of just... stomped on that, and then the introduction of the being known as Prismo, who was pretty dang cool. A good friend of mine and I began bonding over cartoons because we watched a lot of them. Cartoons are, by in large, vehicles for everyone. They get this bad rep that they’re “kid’s stuff” and I can see why if you have stupidly easy to produce shows that just rely on fart jokes or the like. But we didn’t really see that. This drove us both back to watch Adventure Time, since we wanted to catch up on all the current cartoons. The episode we ended up watching... I think it was a two-parter, was about Finn’s dead-beat dad and getting him out of jail so he could then... betray his son to go somewhere? They killed off Prismo (at least for now), Finn lost an arm, and it seemed like things were getting tense. ...then Finn grew an arm back a few episodes later like, “lol, nothing bad happened.” For both of us, though my friend was already bothered by the two-parter we had watched, we kind of viewed the show has not really wanting to take itself seriously. Like there was this sense that yes, they wanted to have high stakes. Yes, they wanted to create this big expansive story (that the creator of the show kind of just said didn’t really exist or wasn’t extremely fleshed out when the show began, it was just a fun weird idea he had). But it seemed like someone burst into the writing room and went, “NO, WE CAN’T DO THAT. WE NEED TO REVERT IT BACK TO A FUN HAPPY JOLLY ADVENTURE” This seems to have persisted for the rest of the show’s duration.

Random side characters would be brought back, changed up, revived, killed off again, all for the sense of some kind of “drama” but then episodes would go “lol forget that happened” as if the writers were literally fighting with each other on what the hell they wanted to do now that most of their founding talent had moved onto other projects. Not to say anything bad of the last few seasons, but it just seems no one was willing to compromise to make something vaguely coherent. I realize that’s hilarious given that the first few episodes are anything but, but that seems to come from again a time when the series really wasn’t MEANT to have a large overarching narrative. I think with a lot of shows that have appeared since then, everyone just assumes “oh, this is a big overarching story with a beginning, middle and end and we’re just getting pieces of it at a time” such as the like with Steven Universe, the recent Ducktales reboot and parts of Gravity Falls. But I think the proof is in the pudding: This isn’t a “grand scheme, J.K. Rowling had most of the ideas for Harry Potter set out when she wrote the first book,” this is more of a, “Nomura realized he was going to make more Kingdom Hearts games and had to write by the seat of his pants in order to make a long narrative, making up new crap as he goes along.” There’s nothing wrong with that second one when done correctly, lots of older shows such as Star Trek: TNG were able to do this pretty competently. But when I think about it I think back to college when an old roommate and I were discussing the manga, “Bleach” which was beginning(?) or at least had signs of wrapping up at the time. I argued that Bleach overstayed its welcome, had horrendous pacing issues, and was plaguing itself with the most (at the time) bloated ending (which ended up NOT being the ending, fancy that). My roommate argued that once the series was completed, he would reread it and he was sure it would all make sense read as one package rather than the weekly updates we got.

So a few years passed and Bleach finally ended. My former roommate set himself out to do this task. He was kind of disappointed to find out that what I had said was true: The pacing got sloppy after a certain point, new powers get introduced pretty much at random, and fights last for goddamn ever (and this is the MANGA) leading to a really “meh” ending that feels extremely forced... after two other arcs that also felt extremely forced since they go against that proposed “what everyone thought would be” ending.

I feel like Adventure Time will be viewed in a similar light in the future. From the limited knowledge I have, it seems the “writers fighting over” what to do with Finn, Jake and the characters did indeed happen. There were plans for a movie, then it got canceled, then they tried to revive it, then they wanted to do specials and finally they just got a few more seasons. While I’m sure some would say, “well of course Cartoon Network would give them more seasons, it’s their most popular show!” Well it isn’t anymore. It hasn’t been for a while. The fact the show got a few more seasons seems more on good faith of “this product was good in the past, maybe it can still shine” they say as they cram Teen Titans Go literally to everywhere on their schedule. By the time my friend and I had watched the episode with Finn’s dad, Steven Universe had become huge on the network and many fans of AT, who liked some of one of the main original writer’s stories for that show, switched over to their new show instead. Cartoon Network was also premiering new shows around this time with We Bare Bears and Clarence, which had their own form of a humor that was relatable (like the ones found in AT) but without having a confusing as heck backstory/world. These shows became pretty popular because they did things without even making a fuss out of them (one of the characters in Clarence has two moms, and no one questions it, it’s just acceptance. There’s even a joke in that show about one of the characters waiting for a blind date, sees a hot guy and gets excited, then finds out he’s actually on a dinner date with his boyfriend/husband, it’s honestly masterly crafted). This kind of left AT in the dust for a bit as it’s weird show was becoming more serialized to the akin of the later seasons of Spongebob -- When in doubt, do something weird, or dumb or maybe shock-value (substitute for Spongebob’s gross-out humor) just to get views.

It seems the dust finally settled as the writers were able to come up with SOMETHING in order to end plot threads that were set up or messed up or whatever. Did you know Ice King was a regular human from before an apocalyptic war? It was a pretty cool reveal. Cool. Now there’s just a magic time portal for some reason and he’s no longer cursed for a bit and his wife is here. Oh, but he’s Ice King again and doesn’t remember her so... his wife will just wander the wilderness or something now? Okay... Jake’s an alien now. In hindsight, sure, it makes sense, but it feels like many of these ideas are just thrown at the wall for the sake of making “lore” when it’s really just making random crap up to make the show feel more “deep.” (Seriously, go look at the Kingdom Hearts plot to see the master of this craft.)

In the end, the finale wraps with a war... or not... it just kind of devolves into this thing for a bit where Finn has to confront his fears one last time, Bubblegum (who was just kind of shit on a bit from the writers during the later seasons) has to fight her uncle?? But then they make peace, and then a giant demon shows up for some reason because Ice King’s wife summoned it. Why did she summon it? What was the purpose? “Well I wanted my husband back” yeah ok, but... giant demon? The f*ck? Then through the power of music they kind of banish it... it’s... weird. I mean it makes sense for the show, and it’s definitely not a terrible episode. But it feels like they really wanted to play up, “LOOK AT THIS EPIC TALE WE’VE WEAVED, YOU BETTER HAVE NOTICED ALL THE DETAILS!!” for their last shebang. And that’s really the problem: The show was never set up like that to begin with. It was set up as a funny show with silly gags and interesting locales for characters to explore from episode to episode. If they ever did something that had consequences (in the earlier seasons at least) something would be done with a quick explanation of dialogue or something that gave the viewer indication as to what was going on, so they wouldn’t be lost. If you’ve watched Steven Universe at all, this show does it pretty brilliantly. Even with more recent episodes that have become heavily story-driven, you can start an episode without having seen ANY of the previous and it’s easy to work your way into. Having that previous knowledge helps, but the shows are constructed in a way that you shouldn’t have to do that unless you want to. Maybe because this was a finale, that’s why they could get away with it? ...but Gravity Falls had a finale too. It put in a lot of references to past episodes and things that happened in the series. You can still watch that finale without having seen any of the series. There’s no big bar that holds you back as to “why is this happening.” You learn character motivations, importance of items, etc. quickly in how it’s established. I know that sounds really selfish, “well it’s a finale for THIS show, and they should reward longtime viewers” and sure, fine. But the way Gravity Falls did it also didn’t alienate newer viewers either?

We’ll see what time has to say on it when people begin bringing it up to their kids or when past kids look in on it in just a few years who may have never seen the show. Maybe I’m 100% wrong. But I feel that it’s a show that, like Bleach, should have ended while it was ahead, at least a few years back. Luckily unlike Bleach, it’s still an enjoyable conclusion. But it definitely feels like a hollow shell of its former self. (But hey Marceline and Bubblegum becoming an item is actually cool and some of the scenes with them at the end are really cute so that’s a good plus, and Beemo (the best character) became a king so not everything’s terrible... just mediocre besides those points.)
