21 - Quest
‘And then,’ Barda said simply, ‘we will go on.’
Lief slowly clipped the Belt around his waist once more. His heart was very full. He felt wonder and a kind of triumph when he thought of what had just passed. He felt excitement, eagerness and a thrill of fear at the thought of what was ahead.
But most of all he felt relief, and a deep, deep happiness.
The first gem had been found.
The quest to save Deltora had truly begun.
DELTORA QUEST 1 The Forests of Silence Ch 16 The Topaz
Sonia raised her hand, then glanced at him. Rye nodded. She had waited even longer than he had for this.
Sonia grasped the heavy ring that served as a handle for the wooden Door. She twisted the ring. She pulled. And the Door swung smoothly open, beckoning them in.
THE THREE DOORS The Third Door Ch 4 Time to Choose —
Now [the bukshah] needed water. And they would not expect him to fail them. To them he was not an undersized, scared weakling. To them he was leader, guide, friend. They trusted him absolutely. The thought flowed through him like warm, rich milk.
He raised his head and looked straight at Strong Jonn. ‘I will go,’ he said. The map he held fluttered in the little breeze that always came before the dawn. ‘I will go with you, to the Mountain.’
ROWAN OF RIN Ch 4 Seeing is Believing —
[Britta] glanced at her companions with envy. Vashti, Jewel and Sky were free to relish their success and look forward eagerly to the contest to come. None of them had anything to fear, anything to hide. One of them, certainly, had tried to put Britta out of the contest, but as there had  been no witness to the deed there was no real danger of discovery. No one on board carreid the burden of a great secret, as she did.

Roddacember Day 29: Time
Spoilers for The Three Doors!
The titular chamber of the three doors is probably the wildest piece of magic we've seen anywhere in the series.
As a narrative device, time travel only has a couple of options if it wants to bother being internally consistent, instead of just dramatically suitable.
I call the two major categories "fixed timeline" and "fluid timeline".
With a fixed timeline, paradoxes are simply physically impossible to have occur. If you try to go back and shoot your grandpa, the gun will jam, or you'll be crushed by a falling piano, and so on, in whatever coalescence of probability maintains the timeline.
A fluid timeline has more leniency, but potential for way more dangerous consequences. One way to do this is the "orphaned timeline" approach - if you go back and kill your grandpa, returning to the 'present' will put you in a new future in which he died and you were never born. You are an orphaned vestige of a timeline that has been prevented. Another way is the concept of paradoxes, where killing your grandpa in a way that prevents your birth will create an inconsistency that makes time itself do something drastic to fix it.
Which type is the chamber of the doors?
I immediately see the most similarities with the orphaned timeline approach. There's something strange about it, though.
When Rye and Sonia go to the past and change it, Sholto is in the future. And what happens to him is, it changes around him. He has vague recollections of being in the Fellan forest, but that melting away in favor of the Shadow-ruled wasteland.
This is weird, because - he was in the future. Why does "now" matter when the change that caused this future happened hundreds of years ago? Why does Sholto remain in spite of it?
This is because there's something important about Weld, present day. This point in space, and this point in time. And the people who have been boxed in there for centuries.
I think the chamber of the doors couldn't have worked anyplace else in the world. Weld is an anchor point. It's so secluded that changes to the past can be made without touching the people from inside at all, and so Rye doesn't replace himself with slightly different Ryes every time he talks to someone in the past.
When they tear down the wall, it wasn't necessary to fill in the chamber to prevent its use again. The Schrodinger's box was already broken by being exposed to the outside.

Ok, so we've got the 3 brothers: the leader, the scientist, and... the other one.
My theory is that alone among the Ancient Three, Dann lived, married, had children, and died in his natural span; our 3 are almost certainly direct descendants living in the city he founded. Everyone else seems real worried about red hair and Fellan blood, a superstition which is completely absent in Weld despite keeping other traditions like crossing wrists/fingers intact, and being otherwise an extraordinarily tradition-reliant society. Also, there's Rye's (and his family's! Don't forget the preserves!) connection to the bell tree to consider. Also also, from a Doylist perspective, Direct Descendance is both too good a wheeze to pass up and a known Rodda plot device.
Our Ancient Three quarrelled and separated; presumably had some bad parenting to work out in their various, mostly ill-advised ways. But our Current Three were raised in the city founded by the one who seems to have been the most emotionally competent, so they walk through the last door together. Finally breaking the cycle of the longest-standing intergenerational trauma, if I'm right. And I am, because 'break longstanding cycle of intergenerational trauma through reveal of long-hinted surprise ancestry' is another time-tested Roddaism.
I would be interested to know if her out-of-universe works deal with similar themes, or if she's just insanely thematically consistent in the Roddaverse. Like damn, 80% of this archipelago's problems is just Skywalker Drama.
Also, if Sholto Hot, then Verlain......

'Why in Weld are you smiling, Rye?' Sholto whispered, sounding as close to panic as Rye had ever known him to sound.

just poking some fun at myself because i realised that a lot of my favourite characters (if i had to pick ONE per series) have similar personalities.
i think it can be summarised quite succinctly by Jewel’s words “provoking wretch!” towards Sky (Towers of Illica, Ch 7)
extended quotes below the cut:
When he saw Lindal’s grim face and straining arms above him, he shrieked.
‘Be quiet!’ Lief whispered.
‘But the woman of Broome is lifting me!’ cried Rolf in horror. ‘How could you let her lift me? She and her kind are demons who dance on the bones of Capra! She is not worthy to—’
‘Shut your mouth, Rolf! hissed Lief.
But Lindal had heard. ‘I am happy to drop you if you wish, Capricon,’ she called.
Deltora Quest 3: Dragon’s Nest // Ch 17
... there was a tap on the door and Sky sidled into the cabin.
‘I have come with an urgent message for Britta the pearl thief,’ he drawled with a mocking smile. ‘Or should that be Britta the turtle witch, terror of the Silver sea?’
Star of Deltora: Towers of Illica // Ch 16
[Allun] dragged Rowan’s pack towards him. ‘You can spend your time usefully by holding the map for us while we look at it again.’
‘We have seen the way we must go,’ frowned Bronden. ‘We do not need the map.’
‘Ah, youth, youth! You must not forget that I am three years older than you, Bronden,’ smiled Allun. ‘And my poor memory is failing fast.’
Rowan of Rin // Ch 6
‘Rescuing your prisoners was not my main task, you know. The slays on the lower floor are all dead, Kyte—as dead as the real Vrett, whose name badge I used to make a fool of you.’
‘As dead as you are about to be!’ Kyte shrieked, her eyes blazing with rage.
‘Ah!’ Sholto raised one eyebrow. ‘Does this mean your kind invitation to breakfast no longer stands?’
The Three Doors: The Silver Door // Ch 26
One of the guards rode close to Gilan. He had lost three friends to the Rangers’ arrows during the attack that morning and he took every opportunity now to crack his spear shaft painfully across the Ranger’s shoulders and back. The fourth time he did so, Gilan turned and looked up at him with a peculiar smile.
‘What are you looking at, foreigner?’ the guard demanded roughly. The smile was a little unsettling. A prisoner shouldn’t smile at his captors like that, he thought.
‘I’m just making sure I can remember you,’ Gilan told him. ‘Never know when that might be useful.’
Ranger’s Apprentice: Erak’s Ransom // Ch 36
Tsukishima: *pulls off an insane block*
Hinata: Tsukishima :D!!! That one point was worth one hundred points!
Tsukishima: If you’re a middle blocker, you try it too :)
Haikyuu! // S03 E04
Cyber Controller: What is your name?
Ten: I’m The Doctor
Cyber Controller: A redundant title. Doctor’s need not exist. Cybermen never sick.
Ten: Yeah but that’s it! That’s exactly the point! Oh, you’re a clever man. I’d call you a genius, except I’m in the room—but everything you invented you did to fight your sickness, and that’s brilliant! That is so human!
Doctor Who // S02 E06
Viren: We are here to discuss some rather weighty matters. Will your regent be joining us soon?
Aanya: I speak for myself now, and for my people.
Viren: Yes... this is a very serious situation... I intend no offence, but these issues require an adult perspective.
Aanya: It seems I’m a crown without an adult, and you’re an adult without a crown.
The Dragon Prince // S02 E05
Obi-Wan, hanging on a ledge: *shoots Grievous until he dies*
Obi-Wan: So uncivilised.

17. looming
I really loved this scene on first read bc it was it's the first time we see Sholto (not Shotlo, as I learned while writing this) break from his smart-ass persona and I just think that's nifty.
---
Shit. He should not have brought Rye here.
Sholto watched the color drain from his brother’s face as Rye looked through his strange little device. Rye must have realized what a foolish hope it was to think that Sholto had a plan. There was no magic solution, no easy fix to all their problems. Just the massive, indifferent ocean looming over them.
If he could wave a magic wand and transport them both home, away from all this, he would. But obviously, that was impossible.
Sholto had refused to admit it to himself, but he had no plan. He had no clue what he was doing when he found his way here, when he impersonated a guard, and especially when he brought Rye to see the horrors of the Dispatch Area. He had hoped his brother’s restlessness would finally simmer down after being shown the reality of the situation, but instead it had broken him completely.
“Oh Rye, I am sorry!” he blurted out. He scrambled for an apology, the words rushing out of his mouth like a tsunami crashing on the shore.
“Fool that I am! I should not have allowed you to hope. Dirk would have known better. He is good with people. I am not. But that is no excuse…”
Rye’s breath relaxed. Sholto was confused – he had not expected his outburst to be of any comfort. Nevertheless, he would take what he could get. He grasped his fingers around Rye’s shoulders.
“Come. We will go back to the cell,” he murmured. “We can release the captives, and give them a fighting chance.”
But Rye did not budge. Instead he turned to Sholto, blabbering about his bag of tricks, insistent that it held the solution. The fire in his eyes alarmed Sholto. It reminded him of Dirk.
Although Sholto was still hesitant to believe that his absence had lasted a full year, it was obvious that Rye had grown up. He was braver, more ambitious.
But his youthful naivety still remained. Whatever powerful mechanisms sealed this door shut, there was clearly nothing to be done about it.
Sholto argued with him: how could he possibly think his bag of tricks could open the door? But when Rye hissed defiantly that Sholto was wrong, Sholto was reminded of many late night arguments with his mother. He heard his own defiant confidence in Rye’s strained whispers.
So when Rye slammed the golden key against the door, he was not shocked. After all, it was exactly what he would have done.
When it actually worked – that’s when he was surprised. The door’s seal broke and it cracked open. Sholto froze, saved only by Rye grabbing his arm and jumping as the tide rushed in.

03 - Animal
'Clinks are always hungry. And what does one mouse more or less matter to you now? Soon you will be far away, and your clinks will have the whole of Fleet to themselves.' [FitzFee said.] 'True,' Nanion admitted. 'So the wheel turns full circle. Clinks were here long before humans were. Why, Fleet was built in this spot because of the fine chimneys the clink colony had hollowed from the rocks. They will be have the whole of Fleet to themselves.' 'No. They'll miss the warmth of your fires and the comfort of your scraps.' THE THREE DOORS The Golden Door Ch 15 Fleet
this was only supposed to be a cute lil clink doodle but it was late at night when i started so i fell down the rabbit hole on this one, so behold my madman scrawlings once more ( '')/
honestly not that really a creature artist so had a bit of a tough time, but i did some a bit of research into irl animals that i could draw inspiration from
i tried to find out if there was any rodent or even just a mammal that could burrow or dig through rock, to no avail. but! there are molluscs that do! they're called boring bivalves, and it did take me a moment to click that they mean "bivalves that bore into rock" and not "check out this absolute snoozefest of a sea creature" lmaoo but yeah. they produce an acid that erodes the rock below them and they basically drill down.
when i initially thought about the clinks and their tunnel colonies, my only ideas were that they did just dig with their claws through the rock and it was soft enough or their claws were hard enough or they were patient enough to get through; or they cast acid attack lol. i didn't really like the acid idea tbh because it felt kinda cheap i guess? but then i remembered the skimmer venom.
and it made me think a little. like maybe the venom is a more evolved, more intense version, or even the same just increased capacity of that acid?
i did struggle so much comprehending where the venom spur is though, and this has happened so many time smh. like i have no idea why but in my brain it has always been at like, the elbow??? i dont know why. maybe because sometimes dragons have spurs there. but it's never said that in the books obviously. and then when i went to check it said "above the claws" and i just genuinely have no idea what that's supposed to mean lmao. i ended up drawing inspiration from the platypus's own venom spur, which did end up looking like i gave skimmers a thumb which i was trying to avoid but it is what it is.
oh yeah i briefly wondered if they ever like collected any venom?? i dont remember it specifically. tallus and sholto do seem the type to have done so. if we go with this headcanon train of thought, then i suppose it could be used in construction or whatnot to remove stone obstructions or something ya know? or you know. kill someone. aNYWAY
last thing is that in my researching for burrowing rodents, i ended up choosing the prairie dog for a base on the clink design, no particular reason why.
anyway boy what a plot point damn read the three doors

Kyte winked slyly at Sholto. ‘Would you like to join me for breakfast in my apartment after the test, Vrett?’ she murmured. ‘The food I can offer is better than the slops you get in your staff feeding room — and certainly the company will be far more enjoyable.’ She laughed scornfully, glancing at the supervisor’s rigid back.
Sholto’s face relaxed into a half-smile. He bowed slightly.

so i thought i could execute my vision in capcut instead of premiere pro because i hate adobe and i want to try alternatives, but capcut wasnt great for looping things which is wild since they are assosciated with tiktok but anYWAY thought it’d be fun to have a lil thing portraying the magic and mystery and monsters of ttd
i also was hella lazy and just did some photobashing. i had flashbacks to when i drew the doors many roddacembers ago and i did not want to try again (and they werent full doors so i couldnt copy and paste that ;-;

the potential for sholto and annocki’s friendship is underrated i reckon
like the romance was stupid as we’ve said before but a friendship tho! im thinking post-ttd, when everyone is settling into their new disrupted lives and figuring things out. they would hang out a lot due to mutual friends, most likely chilling on the side of the party raging in the middle of the room, sonia in the middle.
anyway cutting to the chase, sholto is curious and inquisitive and it spurs him to research and experiment! he writes and writes and reads and reads, but maybe he’s not as practiced with drawing. but you know who is? you know who is patient and calm and draws and paints in her free time? who is now free to do whatever she wants, and probably doesn’t know what to do with her newfound freedom?
what if annocki went with sholto to observe something, or sketched it for him, as a favour or gesture of goodwill or something. and they have a pleasant time and stuff. and they end up having a strong partnership in working on a medical journal or something like that?? a catalogue?? an exploration of insights?? idk some project they can work on together.
