I’m going to break down all the verses of the Dragonborn prophecy using my poster of Alduin’s Wall to explain the many historical events it foresaw and to give others a closer look at the beautifully prominent details. Please zoom in!!!
Tumblr media
The entire left side of the mural depicts the Dragon War of the Merethic era. An ancient time where the mortal men of Skyrim clashed with their dragon oppressors. It was a bloody conflict, and you can see how the force of Alduin’s armies terrorized Skyrim.
Tumblr media
The center of the mural shows the banishment of Alduin the World-Eater. Legend says that after Kyne took pity and aided men against their struggle with the dragons, the power of the Thu’um was granted so that their strength could match that of their foe. With this newfound Thu’um, three nord heroes and the first masters of the voice, Hakon One-Eye, Gormlaith Golden-Hilt, and Felldir the Old met Alduin at the Throat of the World. Despite their tongues, Alduin could not be bested in battle, so the three warriors had to resort to using an Elder Scroll as a last effort to defeat him. With this relic, Alduin was banished to exist adrift the currents of time, but as we all know, was never killed.
Tumblr media
The right section of the mural is where the actual prophecy is narrated. It illustrates each crisis that had taken place during the previous Elder Scrolls games that served as major events foreshadowing the return of Alduin.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“When misrule takes its place at the eight corners of the world…”
The Elder Scrolls: Arena: It is 3E 389. Imperial Battle Mage Jagar Tharn betrays Emperor Uriel Septim VII by using the Staff of Chaos to imprison him within a realm of Oblivion. For ten years, Jagar Tharn usurped the throne and disguised himself as emperor until a hero, the Eternal Champion, retrieved the broken parts of the staff Tharn had hidden away in each of the eight provinces of Tamriel. The hero reassembles the staff and uses it to destroy Tharn’s life force, setting the true emperor free.
Tumblr media
“When the Brass Tower walks and Time is reshaped…”
The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall: It is 3E 405. Emperor Uriel Septim VII recruits a hero once more to investigate a disturbance in the Iliac Bay region. What started out as a simple quest, unfolded into a great paradox known as the Warp in the West that altered time itself. Armies clash, the Underking awakens, and with the totem of Tiber Septim and Mantella, the Numidium is activated. With the reassembly of such a powerful brass golem, each force that sought to claim it, all simultaneously did and did not achieve their goal. Time is split and sundered.
Tumblr media
“When the thrice-blessed fail and the Red Tower trembles…”
The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind: It is 3E 427. After a mysterious individual is sent to Morrowind from the Imperial City prisons, this outlander would soon learn that they are the reincarnation of Nerevar destined to defeat recently revived Dagoth Ur and bring about the fall of the Tribunal Temple. Although fulfilling the prophecy and liberating Morrowind from the Sixith House, the Nerevarine’s task of stripping the Tribunal from their divinity left Morrowind godless. Without their power to intervene, Baar Dau crashed upon Vivec City, triggering the eruption of Red Mountain. The volcano would continue spewing ash, making nearly all of Morrowind uninhabitable. The Red Year and dark times are upon the Dunmer people.
Tumblr media
“When the Dragonborn Ruler loses his throne, and the White Tower falls…”
The Elder Scrolls VI: Oblivion: It is 3E 433. Mehrunes Dagon’s cult, the Mythic Dawn had managed to assassinate Emperor Uriel Septim VII and his three sons. With no heir of Alessia to seal the ancient covenant, the Mythic Dawn opened portals to Oblivion, leaving the mortal plane at the mercy of the Daedra. However, a hero who chose to fulfill the Emperor’s dying wish retrieves the Amulet of Kings and escorts the last surviving Septim to the throne. Things don’t go exactly as planned, and Emperor Martin Septim was compelled to sacrifice himself by shattering the Amulet to call upon the avatar of Akatosh. Although the Oblivion Crisis officially having ended, the blessed dynasty of Dragonborn rulers was terminated with the loss of Martin. The Empire of Cyrodiil would remain turbulent for a period of time under the Elder Council until the Aldmeri Dominion’s inevitable invasion and besiege of the White Gold Tower. The holy Empire of man is waning.
Tumblr media
“When the Snow Tower lies sundered, kingless, and bleeding…”
Following the events after the Great War between 4E 171 and 4E 175, the Aldmeri Dominion controls the Empire of Cyrodiil and with a devastating concordat, obligates the Empire to ban the worship of Talos. This greatly upsets the Nords of Skyrim and the land is torn between loyalists and rebels who wish to secede. In 4E 201, leader of the rebellion, Ulfric Stormcloak, murders the High King of Skyrim, and the province erupts into a civil war. On Alduin’s Wall, we can see how the Throat of the World, Skyrim’s renowned Mountain, has been cleaved down the middle. And beneath it, an army of Stormcloaks and Imperials spilling their own blood.
Tumblr media
“The World-Eater wakes, and the Wheel turns upon the Last Dragonborn.”
With all previous events having came to fruition as Alduin’s Wall had predicted, The World-Eater makes his greatly anticipated return and seeks to conquer. But as the prophecy also displays on the final space, there is one destined to finish what the ancient Nords thousands of years ago could not. As we’ve seen time and time again from the eyes of each hero, Tamriel’s strange fates, tragedies, and triumphs, have a way of intertwining.
