Well, it may be a few days late, but it's here! One of my favorite new year traditions: my ten favorite new-to-me films of 2022!
This year was particularly challenging for me, but we made it through, and thanks in no small part to these beautiful films. They're wildly different, but they all moved me and got under my skin in ways I couldn't shake, so please consider this a strong endorsement for each of them!
The same rules as always: no movies from this past year (2022) or the year prior (2021). Every other year is fair game.
Tumblr media
01. After Life (dir. Hirokazu Kore-eda, 1998; Japan; 119 mins.) “I was part of someone else’s happiness.”
It starts with a great premise: After death, people get one week to select one memory from their lives to hold onto for the rest of time. I knew I was always going to love After Life because I tend to love Kore-eda’s films. This is almost certainly his most compassionate film (which is saying something, considering compassion is pretty much his whole deal), and, as usual for him, the actors all give terrific performances. What I wasn’t anticipating was how much After Life ends up being, of all things, a love letter to dramaturgy. It goes back to the film’s very premise. The memory people keep forever isn’t really their memory – not exactly anyway. It’s a performance, a reenactment painstakingly crafted and filmed by the people who work in this bardo. When the client selects their memory, the storytellers begin building it as a narrative, as something with a script and a clear arc. I can imagine some people finding this to be depressing, but it almost sounds like my dream job.
Side note: I watched this film about a week before my birthday, and at the time I was also playing a lot of the gorgeous video game Spiritfarer on Nintendo Switch, which is all about ferrying wayward souls to the other side. Turns out my capacity for cosmic yearning and spiritual angst knows no bounds.
After Life is currently streaming on the Criterion Channel.
Tumblr media
02. Jackie Brown (dir. Quentin Tarantino, 1997; USA; 154 mins.)
“I’ll send you a postcard.”
Tarantino is a hit-or-miss filmmaker like no other for me, but holy cow, y’all, when he hits, he hits. Everything about Jackie Brown comes together as gracefully as possible, and it’s stunning, frankly, that it was only Tarantino’s third feature. It’s pulpy, it’s twisty, it climaxes with as thrilling a sting as I’ve ever seen, and every scene – every second, really – feels effortless. To watch Jackie Brown is to feel safe in the hands of a storyteller at the top of their craft. Since I’m a sap, it helps that this is most likely his most tender film: every character is so well-drawn and well-realized, and every actor is doing great work (Bridget Fonda, Micheal Keaton, a weirdly against-type Robert De Niro), but the film’s three leads turn in career-best performances. Pam Grier makes Jackie a heroine for the ages, Samuel L. Jackson is a terrifying and magnetic tour de force, and Robert Forster, the heart of the film, is breathtakingly decent in a typhoon of violence and crime. The three performances, rich enough on their own, are at their best when they’re sharing the screen. It’s nothing short of electrifying.
Jackie Brown is currently available on demand.
Tumblr media
03. Barry Lyndon (dir. Stanley Kubrick, 1975; UK/USA; 185 mins.)
“Good or bad, handsome or ugly, rich or poor, they are all equal now.”
I’m glad I finally crossed Barry Lyndon off my watchlist, even if it’s clearly the kind of film that rewards multiple viewings. Kubrick’s meticulous world-building has rarely been more accomplished or authentic than it is here. The sprawling world of Barry Lyndon stretches beyond the edges of the screen, with a huge cast of great character actors giving superb performances. The film’s legendary design work is every bit as staggering as its reputation suggests: John Alcott’s jaw-dropping cinematography, Ken Adam and Roy Walker’s extravagant art direction, and Milena Canonero and Ulla-Britt Söderlund’s gorgeous costumes. It’s also surprisingly funny! A genuinely magnificent piece of work from a master filmmaker.
Barry Lyndon is currently streaming on HBO Max.
Tumblr media
04. F for Fake (dir. Orson Welles, 1973; France/Iran/West Germany)
“Our songs will all be silenced. But what of it? Go on singing.”
At least 80% of F for Fake is footage of Orson Welles stream-of-consciousness monologuing about art and culture and history and making himself chuckle in different fields and parks and cafés while wearing little hats and jackets. Naturally, I loved it. A strange, poetic, and fascinating magic trick of a film, further proof that Welles was truly in a class of his own as a storyteller, a filmmaker, an illusionist, and a self-made myth. What a gift.
F for Fake is currently streaming on HBO Max and the Criterion Channel.
Tumblr media
05. There Was a Father (dir. Yasujiro Ozu, 1942; Japan)
“There’s nothing to be sad about.”
Yasujiro Ozu is rightly regarded as one of the world’s greatest filmmakers, but I’ve long had a pet theory that he was one of the great dramatists of the 20th century. All of his films play out as carefully plotted chamber dramas, their enormous emotional power hidden in the smallest, most subdued interactions between its characters. There Was a Father is as bleak and beautiful as any of Ozu’s films, and maybe the most gutting. At the heart is frequent Ozu collaborator Chishu Ryu, who gives a stoic, honest, and shattering performance as a man whose worldview left him detached from his family and emotionally numb. It’s hard to imagine this being approved by the Japanese national censors during World War II, but thank goodness we have it.
There Was a Father is currently streaming on the Criterion Channel.
Tumblr media
06. Betty Tells Her Story (dir. Liane Brandon, 1972; USA; 20 mins.)
“I guess I still haven’t solved the way I felt about that. The uncomfortableness of being praised for a prettiness I never had, but, you know, kind of excitement about feeling very special suddenly. And it’s gone.”
A short masterpiece of solo storytelling. Liane Brandon fixes her camera on Betty, who recounts a story about buying and losing an expensive dress to wear to a gala. She tells the same story twice – once for the factual sequence of events and once to describe the way she felt as it was happening – and the contrast is amazing to watch. Wherever Betty went after telling Brandon her story, I hope she was happy. Betty Tells Her Story was just inducted into the National Film Registry, ensuring this devastating, empathetic, monumental piece of filmmaking can be preserved forever. Thank God for that.
Betty Tells Her Story is currently streaming on the Criterion Channel.
Tumblr media
07. Donkey Skin (dir. Jacques Demy, 1970; France; 90 mins.)
“Donkey Skin! What a beautiful name.”
What a treat. Donkey Skin easily stands alongside Jacques Demy’s earlier musicals The Umbrellas of Cherbourg and The Young Girls of Rochefort as some of the most blissful films in the genre. As with his other films, the production values are off the charts, including some truly outrageous costumes, and an exquisite score from Demy’s frequent collaborator Michel Legrand. The cast is great, too, including the always magnetic Catherine Deneuve, an endearingly goofy Jacques Perrin, a brooding Jean Marais, and high-camp MVP Delphine Seyrig. The humor is delightfully weird, it looks and sounds amazing, and there are a handful of truly inspired musical sequences. It’s a magical film.
Donkey Skin is currently streaming on the Criterion Channel.
Tumblr media
08. Shoes (dir. Lois Weber, 1916; USA; 50 mins.)
“Whatever happened, life must go on. Whatever boats are wrecked, the river does not stop flowing to the sea.”
Lois Weber’s Shoes must be one of the most affecting melodramas in Hollywood history. Anchored by Weber’s beautiful direction and a haunting performance from twenty-year-old Mary MacLaren, the film becomes something of a neorealistic fable in its depiction of an impoverished young woman doing whatever she can to get enough money to buy a much-needed new pair of shoes. The characters feel authentic and Weber’s depiction of poverty is unflinchingly raw, but the simplicity and intimacy of the film are its strengths. A landmark American film.
Shoes is currently streaming on the Criterion Channel.
Tumblr media
09. Edward II (dir. Derek Jarman, 1991; UK; 90 mins.)
“My father is deceased. Come Gaveston, and share the kingdom with thy dearest friend.”
A transgressive, furious film that beautifully draws parallel lines between the late 80s and early 90s and Marlowe’s source material. Everything about Jarman’s Edward II is bleak as hell, boldly queer, and utterly fascinating: Tilda Swinton playing a spurned sociopathic queen in elaborate costumes! Men screaming in the pouring rain! The realm everyone fighting and dying for being a pitch-black labyrinth of concrete! What’s lasted for me, though, is the utterly stunning sequence where Annie Lennox(!) sings Cole Porter’s “Ev’ry Time We Say Goodbye” while Edward and Gaveston part ways. A beautiful puzzle of a film.
Edward II is currently available on demand.
Tumblr media
10. Detour (dir. Edgar G. Ulmer, 1945; USA; 66 mins.)
“That’s life. Whichever way you turn, Fate sticks out a foot to trip you.”
This is one lean, nasty noir. Clocking in at just over an hour, Detour is a relentlessly paced and relentlessly mean thriller, one that puts a fittingly mopey Tom Neal in a runaway car in the opening minutes and never, ever lets up. He’s joined (if not supported) by Ann Savage, who gives a truly venomous performance, practically spitting every lethal line she has. It’s bleak, it’s powerful, and it’s gorgeous in its own hellish way. I’ve never connected with film noir quite as much as I would like to, but this is as perfect an example of the genre as I’ve ever seen.
Detour is currently streaming on the Criterion Channel and Prime Video.

─── HOW THEY WOULD COMFORT YOU (SDV)
Tumblr media
hello! someone inquired privately about a request, and this is the result! it's formatted this way because it's more of a long ramble than anything else, so i hope that's okay.
SYNOPSIS: your fav has noticed that you've been a little down recently... so they'd like to cheer you up! here are my ideas as to how they'd go about doing that <3
SFW FLUFF, mdni.
INCLUDED: Alex, Sam, Sebastian, Elliott, Harvey, Shane WC: 1,938
Tumblr media
ALEX: he's a man of acts of service, right? he's gotta be, i think. with his big muscles and strong work ethic, it's what he does best. when you're feeling down, Alex would be more inclined to helping you do whatever it is that you've gotta do over anything else- and he won't take no for an answer! any chores you need done? alex is picking them up for you. any work not finished? alex is doing it for you. need to make a phone call but don't have the energy? yup, alex is stepping in for you. you can forget about cooking too, because he's learnt a few sweet recipes from his grandma and will be baking your favourite treats to cheer you up!! catch him handing you cookies (jus tlike how grandma made em <3) and pulling you onto the couch, snuggling you into his big body with tight hugs and lightly peppered kisses. he's not one for sitting down and relaxing most of the time, but when all you really need is some comfort and affection he's more than happy to provide that in the form of blankets and movies. he might even end up napping with you on the couch, all snuggled up and warm... he's not the best at talking, but he'll listen for as long as you need. and more than anything, he'll make sure you don't have to lift a finger until you start feeling better again! just wants to make you smile again, and he'll do anything to make you feel better.
"Just sit your pretty butt down on the couch and I'll be back with a surprise in a second!"
"Have you ate yet? What about your water intake? Maybe you need a nap... Let's go lay down together and watch dumb videos on my phone together, okay?"
SAM: is the master of being silly. just a silly little guy with a heart of gold! and he's so sensitive too, i think, so he'd notice your mood changing as soon as it happens. in some respects i can see him being a little but overwhelming to deal with when you're feeling bad, because his go to idea for cheering you up is to be in your face laughing and joking around in hopes of making you laugh too, but he's just trying his best, even if he can be a bit much sometimes. he'd also like to make a fool of himself if he realises he's being overbearing, placing himself at the butt of jokes just to get you smiling again. compared to alex, i think sam is a very good talker, and an even better listener; he's a family man at heart, conflict resolution is part of the job. he might not come up with the most practical ideas to help, but you can be sure that whatever he suggests will at least be fun and entertaining! maybe he'd also play video games with you to help distract you from what's upsetting you, or if he can, sitting through and completing tasks with you together so that he can support you through your tough time that way. because he's so sensitive, if you're crying, he's liable to cry too. but at the end of the day you have this sweet, sunshine, genuine man doing his utmost to make you happy again. it's his life mission </3
"C'mon, lets play that game that you love! I'll even grab us some snacks, so get comfy!"
"It's okay, babe. I'm here, I'm listening. Tell me aaaaall about it."
SEBASTIAN: is more practical than the others, and by that i mean he's more worried about solutions than anything else. don't get me wrong, he'd help in other ways too... but he much prefers seeking an answer more tangible than your current circumstances. he's the type to distract you more than anything from whatever is upsetting you, enjoying physical touch as a means to divert your attention away from the bad feelings and back onto him. you can't be upset if his hands are squishing your cheeks to kiss your lips better! little kisses down your neck while you complain, light trails of his fingers up and down you back while you cry. he doesn't mind listening, but while you're rambling away he's already in his own head working out how to best resolve your issues. he'd do just about anything to make you feel better!! he'd smoke with you, if you were up for it. wanting you to relax as much as possible, joint between his fingers for you to puff at while you're sat between his legs. he'd stroke your hair in the meantime, humming idly as you tell him all about your feelings. idle not because he doesn't care, but because he's thinking. maybe he'd even encourage you to go on a short walk with him, just out to the lake. something about the water being calming, and he knows it to be true because it's one of his favourite spots in town; only made better by having you there with him. even better if it's night time and you can watch the stars with him while forgetting all about your issues!
"Trust me, you'll feel better after a while of sitting. Just be patient."
"Need a little distraction, yeah? C'mere, let me kiss you all better."
ELLIOTT: is heavy on words, isn't he? a fan of whisking you up in his arms, carrying you to the bed, and doting on you with all those sweet words you so often coax out of him just by existing. he'd empathize highly with you, which might lead to him tearing up a little as you're recalling what it is that's making you feel so bad. but he'd persist, whispering sweet nothings down your ear, encouraging words and shared upset. he might even play you some piano, expertly executing one of your favourite pieces just to cheer you up a little. and if you're feeling extra bad, he'd indulge you by singing along to the song, encouraging you to join because you can't be sad when you're singing! on days where it's sunny, he'll drag you out of the house if you're feeling up for it for walks, particularly to the beach. he'll listen to you ramble the whole way, attentively listening until you arrive at the beach and he takes a deep breath. he'd encourage you to just have fun for now, forget all about what troubles you for an hour or two, and then after you've calmed down he'll help you figure out a solution to your issues. but in the meantime, before you're in the right mindset to tackle your issues, he'd simply go with the flow and provide you anything you might need in the moment to feel better. a day or two later you might receive a letter, or a new poem from him. just a little something to make sure you're as happy as you should be <3! indulging in creative outlets would be his go to idea to help, because it's what he likes to partake in himself when he's feeling down.
"My love, would you like to collect seashells with me? They're very pretty, and I think we could use them in a future project..."
"Would listening to your favourite song help, love? If so, I'd be honoured to play it for you."
HARVEY: can resort to being a little bit too clinical at times, but he's trying to learn to rely more on others forms of help. still, he'll make sure that your health is in order first. need to nap? drinking enough water? been eating correctly? and if not, he'll help fix those issues first. however, after you're all fed and such, he'd love to get all cosy with you and just listen. i think he's the best listener of the bunch, coddling you and keeping you safe and warm in his arms while you ramble and cry into his chest. sitting on his lap while he cuddles you on his old man armchair? bliss. would highly encourage you take a bath together, allowing you to soak in the warm water while he bathes you nice and gently, setting out a fresh pair of pyjamas on the bed afterwards and giving you doctors orders to spend the day in bed with him! it doesn't matter what he had planned for the day, he has a sick patient under his roof now, and he'll do his absolute best to make you all better again. watching tv, drinking hot chocolate together, having him cook dinner for the two of you like it's some sort of special occasion. he'll pull out all the stops in an effort to make you happy again, a secret favourite tactic of his being to pull you into the middle of the kitchen to dance with you while dinner cooks. a genuine romantic, he hopes you make you feel better by showing you just how love you truly are, and that no matter what you're going through, he's right there with you.
"I tried cooking your favourite meal, because you deserve it after what you've been through. It's not much... But I hope you like it regardless."
"Are you comfortable? Please let me know if there's anything else I could do for you. I wouldn't want my patient to get any sicker under my care!"
SHANE: naps. naps naps naps, old man afternoon naps in the bed together, wallowing away in shared upset over your issues. he's not a good talker, he knows, so he'd try to make up for what he lacks by giving you the care he so desperately needed himself; the care you've taught him to show. which would highly include napping! just soft sheets and tight cuddles, letting you sob against him while he coos down at you under the sheets. his gruff voice encouraging you to let it all out, that it's good to feel these emotions, and that he'll be there the whole time. once you've calmed down a bit though, he'd simply ask what it is that you need in the moment to feel a bit better. and it doesn't matter what you need, he'll do it. it's the least he could do after you've helped him so much, right? which makes him the most malleable of the bachelors in terms of how they'd help- he doesn't have any set in stone ideas, he just does what you ask him to do. but some of his favourite tactics are: spending time with animals, loving on them and letting them nuzzle up against you, watching the way they just seem to know that you need extra attention. indulging you in some of your hobbies, even if he sucks at them! because even if he fails, so long as it makes you laugh he doesn't mind being the joke for a while. cooking and eating together. getting your hands busy, he thinks, is the best way to overcome your issues. something about physically making something, right? how you're not just stuck in your own head overthinking all the time, because you're too busy focusing on a manual task. he doesn't mind whatever your answer might be to what do you need right now? because he's already accepted that he'll do whatever you say next.
"Come help me with dinner, please. Could help you a little, I think... And at the end of it all, we get some yummy food. Sound nice?"
"We haven't seen the animals today, have we? Let's go together, I'll help out, okay?"

Hi!! Could you do Sam HCs? It can be literally anything. I just love him so much :)
ʚ🛹ɞ ˚ · . Random Sam Headcanons
Tags: Sam from SDV x gn! reader
Hi! I'm so sorry for the super super super late response. Life has been pretty busy for the past few months and I haven't had the time to get on Tumblr. But, I'm slowly coming back to it! Anyway, likes and reblogs are appreciated. Hope you enjoy, loves! 🌷🫶
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
🎸 He was absolutely thrilled when you asked him to teach you how to skateboard. He immediately came knocking on your door the first thing in the morning the day after you brought it up, carrying his skateboard and some gear. You two spent the whole day going over the basics, with Sam holding your hands and trying not to laugh when you would scream over the tiniest things (“I’m going to die, Sam!” “It’s just a pebble!”). A cute add-on: Vincent and your pet would tag along sometimes, and they took it upon themselves to be your personal cheerleaders. After some time and a few bumps and bruises, you and Sam would often skateboard all around the town, trying to impress each other with tricks. Sam has your name etched on his skateboard, and you have his name on yours.
🎸 Personal HC where Sam and Vincent stumbled inside the fruit bat cave while they were visiting. Sam got bit by a bat, nothing too serious. Vincent is horrified, and Sam decided to mess with him by pretending to be a vampire. Suspiciously, you find yourself missing a jar of your homemade jam. Turns out, Sam “borrowed” it (And by that, I mean he scribbled a little note on the place where your jam used to be), and covered it all over his face pretending it’s blood. He got a big scolding from Jodi right after though.
🎸 Sam and Krobus friendship, Sam and Krobus friendship, Sam and Krobus friendship! It all started when Sam looked into the sewer to show Vincent that no, there is no monster in the sewage canal. He was soon face to face with a shadow man and it was over. Krobus has a knack for beating the hard levels on Sam's video game and their friendship budded from there. Sometimes, Sam would disguise Krobus with his clothes so they can watch movies in the cinema together. You found out about them when you walked in on Sam trying to teach Krobus how to play the drums in the greenhouse.
🎸 Sam asked Jodi to teach him how to bake after he had the bright idea to ask you out on a picnic when you two started dating. It all started when Penny showed him those fancy little cakes that she ordered from Zuzu City as a treat for Vincent after the kid passed his math exam. Penny mentioned how you saw those cakes when she bumped into you by the bus stop and thought they were cute. Cue a light bulb in Sam’s head. Sam’s not the best cook, but he’s got the enthusiasm. He ended up with a lopsided two-tier cake with a little blob of fondant on top of it (Vincent’s lips pursed, “What’s with the brown rock?” Sam sputtered while Jodi’s laughter chittered in the air close by. “It’s a chicken!”). Sam would make up for it years later when he would remake the same cake for your wedding anniversary.
🎸 Sam would randomly call you in the middle of a rainy day and just play guitar riffs. No words exchanged. When he’s done, he will just hang up.
🎸 Sam gives you pretty seashells that he and Vincent dig up on the beach (sometimes with a little help from Elliott and Willy) instead of flower bouquets. He doesn’t want to risk sneezing all over you when the pollen would inevitably make his nose red.
🎸 Sam had a whole phase of wearing a cowboy hat when he’s working on the farm for the first few months.

Stardew Bachelor/ette's as relationship tropes
A/N: because this is cute and im in my feelings watching the little mermaid im feeling so giddy omfg THIS MOVIE WAS MADE FOR MEEKLALQOWOSOA also plus victor and Sofia(sophia?) WOW so if anyone has already read this it was not finished nor was it supposed to be posted so as I finish it it'll just be updating because i don't wanna delete it oopsies!
Tw: none? Idk maybe bullying???
Genre: headcanons
Wc:maybe like 5 bullet points per thing?
Sdv Masterlist
Strangers to Lovers:
Emily
Penny
Leah
Elliott
Friends to Lovers:
I feel like Penny and Leah would be a meet-cute sorta thing like at a coffee shop or a library
Maybe elliott also at the library or at a bar
But I feel like with Emily it would be somewhere chaotic
Like a concert
Or a rally of some sort
All of these would be like a romance novel of some sort you meet your soulmate on a chance outing super cute!!!
Sam
Sophia(Sofia?)
Enemies to Lovers:
Harvey
All of these guys seem as if they fall hard for friends mostly
Like yeah they sometimes find a stanger attractive
But I feel as if these people are the kind to slowly develop a crush on someone they already know
Sam would make the best tv show character and Sophia(pls someone tell me how to spell) and Harvey would make better book characters
Haley
Sebastian
Abigail
Second chance:
Alex
You probably absolutely hated these guys ngl
Like I feel like they have enemy quality
Like especially Haley and Alex they have high school bully energy to me
So even if they weren't bullys they would somehow end up on your kill list
Seb and Abigail seem like general assholes and probably did something to piss you off(im saying this as a Seb girlie)
Honestly my favorite genre to read but that's because i am toxic oops
Shane
Victor
Maru
I feel like these three would've been in relationships they had to let go of for different reasons and now that time has passed you meet again and get that second chance at loving one another
Shane would prolly be because of his downward spiral and you two broke up after a heated fight because he just refused to try so you left(Jas was torn up but doesn't really remember because she was younger)
Victor prolly had to break up with you because of Olivia and different statuses in money. She only wants the best for her son and unfortunately in her eyes you were not it.
For Maru i think its obvious Demetrius had something to do about it. Maybe you were in a relationship in high school
And even if her grades didn't slip at all when he found out he made her break up with you to force her to focus on her future.

HEADCANONS PT 2 no one can save you from the inevitable.
Asher also calls David babe. Not cause they're dating (though they could-) but as a little haha jokey joke. Asher's been doing it for years
Vincent has a massive sweet tooth. I like to think he particularly likes anything cherry flavored
Elliott and sunshine have a tradition where every new years eve they spend the night at Elliott's house. They'd sit on the roof and put on a live stream of the countdown on their phones with snacks and they'd just watch the fireworks. Bonus if they accidentally fall asleep together on the roof
They also LOVE stranger things
DUDE BRACHIUM FUCKEN LOVED UNUS ANNUS/j
Huxley smells like sage and incense smoke. And yknow. Weed probably.
Gavin sleeps during class sometimes and lasko has made it his god given autistic right to shoot rubber bands at him whenever he does
Hux and Damien do yoga dates. Where they do less yoga and more sitting on their mats and talking about bullshit
Gavin keeps a list of all the shit his friends are into (like if they're all watching a movie together and smth happens in the movie that someone is into, he'll feel that). Lasko has the most under his list. It would be really funny if lasko sees him pulling out a little notebook quickly scribbling smth down and lasko is like "wait what-"
Even though Milo isn't a healer, Marie is his mother and leaves an influence on him. Therefore sometimes Milo tends to scold people the same way Marie would 💕
Yes freelancer does have sexy hot pictures of Gavin on their phone, but they also have the most cryptic blurry pictures of him too that makes him look like the creature he is (idek if they'd even be able to do that. Frankly I don't care)
Guy and honey never eat at their table. It's always either on the couch or on their bed. Sometimes they even eat on the floor cause why not.
Aight that's it have fun

RANDOM ELLIOTT HEADCANONS… | part 2
Tumblr media
CONTAINS: sfw, nothing worth noting :)
NOTES: [me & elliott] we recently got married & had a baby <3 sorry this is a little short
Tumblr media
☆ Elliott tends to be in physical pain from sitting at his desk all day. It’s not excruciating but it’s enough to have him take pain relief often. It’s usually his back, his head, and sometimes his wrist. He’ll get bad migraines from overthinking or stress and will have to be lectured about the importance of breaks by Harvey and Leah.
☆ He’s a coffee/caffeine addict. Anything that keeps him awake and his mind full of inspiration and new ideas. He’s knows it’s unhealthy but try as he might, he can’t quite fight the addiction.
☆ It’s pretty much canon but Elliott is a bookworm! He never ventures without a book and has a big collection of them. He’s even tried to make it a goal of his to read every book in the library.
☆ He prefers owning books rather than borrowing them. He doesn’t have a lot of room for them in his little cabin though so they usually end up in a box under his bed once he’s finished reading one.
☆ Elliott and Willy have special father-son bond. I imagine Willy doesn’t have children and Elliott was never close with his parents. Their bond makes up for that void. Willy has definitely taught Elliott how to fish. Elliott helps around a lot too as Willy is an older gentleman.
☆ Willy shed a few tears when Elliott showed up with a card and a bouquet of flowers on Father’s Day. They’ve celebrated that day ever since.
☆ Elliott doesn’t label his sexuality. He likes who he likes and that’s never confused him. From a young age, he never understood why only confine himself to one select group of people.
☆ He’s a hopeless romantic if you couldn’t tell lol. He just wants to give love and receive it all the same!
☆ Elliott doesn’t like horror movies. He finds blood and gore gross, the people’s decisions stupid and irrational, and hates overwhelming suspense. He’ll watch one or two (nothing gory) if it’s to celebrate Spirit’s Eve but only if it’s with someone. He gets quickly uninterested if he’s watching alone lol.

More Random Listener Headcanons I Wrote Down Part Two
Thanks for the love on the last one guys <3
This one accidentally got very hobby-focused lol
Sunshine is not the best at cooking but they excel at making dessert. Crème Brûlée, Pralines, ice cream, you name it, they can do it. They once made one for Elliott on his birthday and now all he ever wants for his birthday is for them to make him another and he always loves them. He especially loves watching them prepare and make them.
Bestie does some form of martial arts. When they were still friends, Blake used to volunteer for them to try out moves on him, not in an 'I want to be close' kind of way, he just genuinely loved to see how much strength they had.
Angel likes watching crime series. When they started watching them with David, he kept saying "You get scared by horror movies but not by this?!" And they just chuckled and continued to show him the most morbid episodes.
Cutie loves watching old movies from the fifties or sixties. They like the way they talk and dress. They once bought clothes for an outfit inspired by them and Geordi subsequently lost his mind when he saw them in it: "god, they look hot, damn, I mean, I didn't particularly enjoy those movies but damn, they look incredible" etc.
Doc loves making candles. In all shapes, forms, and smells. They had to explain to Hush how they work and where the wax goes. Now he keeps asking questions about why they don't just use magic to make them, yet is absolutely enchanted by watching them do it "Why are you doing it like this? Why did you choose that scent? What does that sigh mean?".
My Love (Anton's Listener) is not the biggest fan of winter but they loooove ice-skating on lakes. And Anton gladly joins them every time and is surprisingly good at it as well. They typically just hold hands while going in big circles but Anton encourages them to try out new things like spins and jumps.
Seer Obscura (granted, I haven't listened to all of their audios yet so this is purely based on what I know so far…meaning vibes lol). They seem like the type to write poems. Longer narrative ones, similar to old tragic poetry. They told Morgan once, w/o meaning to really, but he was surprised by his own strong curiosity to read one at some point.
Spouse (James' Listener) loved to have speech and debate matches with their friends. Just an evening where they randomly debate different topics over drinks and snacks. James was hesitant to join in at first but he absolutely loves watching his spouse drag their friends through the proverbial mud with their arguments and he sometimes joins in now too.
Treasure loves cemeteries. They learned all kinds of old traditions surrounding how to behave while in a cemetery and love going to different ones to just sit there and draw. They mentioned it in passing to Porter who just raised an eyebrow but secretly felt a strong "damn, that's hot" on the inside that he couldn't really explain.

Bachelor/ettes and Horror
How would our ladies and gentlemen fair with scary things?
Bachelors:
Sebastian -- He loves all things horror. Has opinions on every subgenre, slasher rankings, and probably some amount of memorabilia. He vastly prefers sci-fi horror (Alien, the Thing, Pandorum) or supernatural. Plays indie horror games on his computer. If the farmer is a horror hound, they will have a friend in Sebastian.
Shane -- He's not really the type to put horror on, but it's never bothered him. He likes goofy 70s-80s stuff best, and I don't think he would enjoy 'cerebral' horror. Thinks the special effects are cool. Will mix up the big slasher names.
Elliott -- It may be controversial to put him high, but I almost put him higher. He does NOT like anything gory or icky, but I think he would really love older horror from the 40s-50s and giallo films. There's some more artistic ones that he would probably like as well. He would prefer to read horror, and has read quite a few classics. It's not his favorite genre by any means, but sometimes gets a taste for it in late fall.
Sam -- He's not a fan. He's seen some big ones with Sebastian, but he's fairly squeamish and can't handle intense gore. Gets scared pretty easily. Really wishes he could handle them, his besties love it.
Alex -- Does not like horror. Doesn't understand why someone would want to feel scared. He isn't easily grossed out, but doesn't like seeing horror violence. Simply Does Not Get It.
Harvey -- He's baby. Easily scared, even when it's 50's era stuff. Never expects a jumpscare, too much empathy for violence, will think the house is haunted for two weeks after Poltergeist. He's comedic levels unable to handle anything remotely spooky.
---
Bachelorettes
Abigail -- On par with Sebastian, maybe even more into it. Loves all things grody and scary, UNLESS spiders are involved. Better than Sebastian at recommending stuff to people who don't know anything about where to start. Loves supernatural stuff best. Orders a lot of horror comics online.
Maru -- Lives with Sebastian, so he's definitely shown her a number of things way too early when she bugged him to hang out. Is not easily frightened, and finds science based stuff really interesting. Thinks gore effects are cool and is really interested in behind the scenes stuff. Fave is probably something like Reanimator or Chopping Mall.
Leah -- She's not super into scary movies, but doesn't mind them every once in a while. Likes artier stuff like Suspiria or Pan's Labyrinth.
Emily -- Not really a fan, but might watch an older movie around Spirits Eve. Like Elliott, more likely to read something with horror concepts than watch it. Would probably like House of Leaves.
Haley -- Does not like horror. Thinks all horror is gory slashers, will not open herself up to more.
Penny -- Gets so fucking scared it's not funny. They make her sick. Does not enjoy any type of horror, even some drama is too much to bear. Really only enjoys watching happy things.

The last few headcannon posts have been about SDVE (Stardew Valley Expanded) so I wanted to get back to the vanilla version of the game.
SDV bachelors/bachelorettes and the likelihood of them dancing with you.
~-------~
Batchelors first!~ Elliott: This man LOVES to dance, especially if it's with you. He'll put on fancy music on a gramophone or other older tech. He'd love to sweep you off your feet and take charge and dance the night away. He likes to be close to you when he's dancing. The closer the better, for your chests to touch, one hand on your side, the other holding your hand and staring into your eyes. He 100% sounds like the type to dip someone while dancing.
Sebastian: I'm a bit torn on this one. I know he dances in the Flower Festival every year but idk if he enjoys it 100%. Like it's kind of an expectation type thing so he's like "Ughhh alright". He always dances with Abigail unless you ask him but if he didn't dance with someone he knew he would be having even less of a good time than he already was. But just dancing with you alone, Idk if he'd be into it. Just sitting next to you watching a movie or playing a video game sounds a whole lot more fun to him.
Sam: I feel like there's a type of music he'd like to dance more than others. Like rock or something, definitely not classical or slow music. If he did want to dance he'd want some high-energy music. Something fun to dance to. The kind that'd make you two a little tired by the time the song ended. Or at the end, you two would just fall onto his/ your bed laughing and a little out of breath. Harvey: Harvey sounds like the kind of guy to dance sometimes. He'd play music on a radio or his phone and hold his hand out all gentlemanly like and you to dance. I feel like he'd have to work up the courage to ask you just a bit. He'd have slow music on and dance slowly. You two being close and looking into each other's eyes. I bet he'd really like it if you rested your head on his chest and you two just danced slowly.
Shane: Not sure if he's a dancer either. He does dance at the flower festival, but otherwise, I'm not sure he'd want to. You might have to be the one to initiate it. He'd probably be too nervous or thoughts of how you might think it's dumb or not want to do it. That alone would make him nervous and shy away from the idea. He does like being near you. So maybe if you catch him in the right mood, when he's at his happiest he'd dance with you.
Alex: Again, not sure if he'd be a dancer. He might ask sometimes, nervous and a bit red-faced like at the flower festival. Or maybe at home. At first, he'd take the lead but also be kind of worried that he might step on your feet by accident. Not the most graceful at first but he's trying his best.
~
Bachelorettes!:
Emily: 100% loves to dance and dance with you too. Her dancing style is definitely different and also high energy similar to sam. If she did dance with you she'd turn on some music and either hold out a hand for you or pull you into a dance. She'd smiling and happy the whole time.
Haley: Likes to dance too but not as much as her sister Emily. I feel like she'd have to be in a dancing mood too. I also feel like she likes to dance to music, in her room or (maybe) in her photography/dark room. LOVES dancing at the flower festival, as anyone has seen if you go to the flower festival. She seems like the kind of person to wrap her arm around your neck and if you both just slow dance and enjoy the moment.
Abigail: Also not sure if she's a dancer, you might have to pull her into a dance. I feel like she'd like more high-energy music like Sam. She might try and turn it into a competition. But it'd end with you two just having a lot of fun.
Penny: Slow dancer definitely, like jazzy music, enjoys dancing calmly with you. She does go to the flower festival but prefers dancing with you alone. More at your house than the trailer she shares with her mom. Your house is definitely more private and also a lot bigger.
Leah: Definitely could enjoy dancing. I feel like she could dance to slightly fast or slow music, more on the side of slow. I bet that she'd dance while making art, like letting the music help her creativity flow. If she'd really getting into art she might invite you to join her in dancing. Just getting really excited about being able to express what she is feeling with you.
Maru: I'm not sure how much of a dancer Maru is but if she did dance with you it'd be more slow music and less fast music. She also, like all the Bachelors and Bachelorettes, dances in the flower festival. But also if you two did dance outside the festival she'd want it to be more of a private thing. Like in her room or maybe in the room where she keeps her secret projects in. Just a nice place for you two to be together and enjoy the moment.

Review: The Fabelmans (Spielberg, 2022)
"Art will give you crowns in heaven and laurels on Earth, but also, it will tear your heart out and leave you lonely."
Tumblr media
The Fabelmans is a film that's been so heavily marketed as Steven Spielberg's Love Letter To The Movies, but I'm not sure I buy it. There's a lot going on in The Fabelmans, and some of it is definitely an ode to the escapist power of cinema -- one of the first things Michelle Williams says is "Movies are dreams that you never forget" -- but it's almost a cover for the darker, thornier ideas at work here.
Much of The Fabelmans feels so confessional and personal that it's almost hard to watch. Spielberg's parents divorcing was the single most formative event of his childhood, and it's fair to say it directly led to his career as one of the most iconic and influential filmmakers in American history, The way he and co-writer Tony Kushner dramatized the context surrounding the divorce in this film is genuinely devastating. This is largely thanks to the two wildly different performances from Williams and Paul Dano. Williams' Mitzi is a woman who seems to feel every emotion deeply and fully, and her performance is appropriately larger-than-life. Dano's Bert is her opposite, a soft-spoken man of reason and logic who can't seem to figure out where their marriage fell apart. Both Williams and Dano are tremendous actors, and it's fascinating to see them essentially swap modes here (Williams does quietly devastated better than almost anyone, while Dano is scarily good in loud, over-the-top roles). I honestly think I need to see the film again to fully figure out where I land on their performances here (especially Williams, who is doing some extremely interesting work), but their shared sense of history is beautiful to watch.
The most disarming thing about The Fabelmans is the way Spielberg tells on himself. As far as I can tell, he's never bared his soul this directly onscreen before. There's a single, wordless moment in the inevitable scene where the Fabelman parents are telling their children they're getting a divorce that basically acts as the film's thesis. With his sisters sobbing around him, Sammy (Gabriel LaBelle) has fully dissociated. We see the scene from his vantage point, looking down on the living room from the stairs, and as we slowly zoom into a mirror on the mantle, we see Sammy's reflection rush past holding a camera, imagining one of the most painful moments of his life as a scene in a film. The moment comes and goes so fast, but it's haunted me for a month, and it drives home the quote at the top of this review perfectly. That quote, spoken by Uncle Boris (a scenery-chewing Judd Hirsch), and that mirror shot are the whole point of the film. This isn't a film about the magic of storytelling -- or rather, it isn't just about that -- it's a film about loneliness and obsession in the artistic process. The Fabelmans isn't Spielberg's Belfast; it's his Sunday in the Park with George.
Some stray thoughts to wrap this up: LaBelle is freakishly good in this movie; the war movie scenes are so good; the Christian girlfriend stuff is so funny; the climactic scene where Sammy "discovers" his mother's affair while editing home videos is absolutely stunning; the scene with the bully in the hallway is magical; in fact, the entire last half hour is some god-tier stuff, especially the ending (David Lynch!) and the screamingly perfect final shot.
It's funny: I liked this movie just fine as I was leaving the theater, but now, writing about it a month later, I find myself completely overwhelmed with emotion. Turns out I liked it a lot more than I thought. That's the work of a great filmmaker, I guess.

What are we gonna tell our friends when they say ooh-la-la
911  |    Buck/Eddie   |    Rated PG    |    c. 8700 words
@911bingo prompt: Falling Asleep Together
The drive-in movie theater had been Buck's idea, because Christopher was getting older and Eddie had decided to let him stay up later on the weekends in the summer. When Christopher had tried to argue that for consistency’s sake he should be allowed to stay up late seven days a week, Eddie had agreed that routine was important so they should go back to the regular schedule. His son had decided that on second thought, consistency was overrated.
It freaked Eddie out that sometimes he sounded like his mother.
Considering they were both single again after an embarrassingly short run of semi-disastrous dating, these movie nights were the most thrilling social activity Eddie was getting these days. This particular place showed a lot of older, kid-friendly movies, so Christopher – and Buck – had now been introduced to Ghostbusters and Back to the Future and the original Jumanji (but not Gremlins, because Eddie remembered that had been creepy as hell). Christopher had managed to stay awake for most of them, but E.T. was way too long for him to manage, and he was nodding off three quarters of the way through.
“We can stream it next weekend so he can see the ending,” Buck murmured, leaning toward Eddie in the truck as they watched Elliott and E.T. ride through the sky on a bicycle.
“Maybe the weekend after,” Eddie said. “I saw they're showing Blazing Saddles next Saturday. Want to go?”
“Is that a Western?” Buck wrinkled his nose. “I'm not a big fan of Westerns.”
Eddie raised his eyebrows. “You've never heard of Blazing Saddles.”
“Hey, I'm getting better,” Buck said defensively. “I'm almost caught up on the Eighties now.”
Eddie snorted. “It's from a little farther back than that. It's also a comedy, and definitely not kid friendly. Maybe we can get a babysitter, or Hen and Karen would agree to an evening with Denny?”
“You asking me on a date, Diaz?”
Buck had been saying things like that more often over the last few weeks, poking at the edges of what they were to each other. His tone was always teasing, but there was something pointed in it this time. Eddie's heart tried to hide behind his spine as he doggedly kept his eyes on the screen in front of them. “I'm trying to educate you. Your movie knowledge is appalling.”
Buck took out his phone and tapped at it for a minute. “Huh, says it's a double bill.”
“What's the other movie?”
“Young Frankenstein.”
“Which you've also never heard of.”
“Which I've also never heard of.”
“Next you're going to tell me you don't know who Marty Feldman is.”
“I don't know who Marty Feldman is.”
“Your situation is even more desperate than I thought.” Eddie sighed. “I'd love to see that too, but there's no way we won't be sound asleep by eleven after pulling a double shift the day before.”
“You're right, one movie is gonna be as much as we can handle. You think it'll be a problem if we sneak out early?”
“I doubt it.” Eddie stuck his hand in his bag of popcorn only to find a few forlorn kernels at the bottom. Glancing over, he saw that Buck still had half a bag. He wiggled his hand in Buck's direction, and Buck tilted the bag toward him obligingly.
“Okay, sounds like a plan,” Buck said. “You want to come over to my place first? I have a couple of new recipes I want to try out on my guys.”
Eddie cocked his head, ignoring the way his heart was now zooming around in his chest cavity like a kid the day after Halloween. “Sure, what is it?”
“Nuh-uh,” Buck said, shaking his head. “It's a surprise.”
“Well, that's – hm,” Eddie said.
“What 'hm'? What does that mean?”
“Nothing. Don't know why you're getting all mysterious on me, though.”
“Maybe I'm a man of mystery,” Buck drawled, raising an eyebrow.
“Like Austin Powers?” Buck looked at him blankly. “Come on! That's from the Nineties! You were born then!”
Breaking into a grin, Buck said, “Gotcha.”
Eddie rolled his eyes and called him a dick, but when he reached out Buck let him take another handful of popcorn anyway.

Elliot x GN!Farmer
request: Hi can you write a scene where Elliott finds the farmer crying after watching a movie like “up” or “inside out”? It’s not a sad cry it’s more of an emotional cry brought on by the films. @crab-in-elliotts-shirt-pocket
a/n: eeeeeee this is my first thingy! Hope you guys like it! Thank you for requesting it!
---
The sound of sniffles had gotten the writer's attention a bit ago, but knowing the films you like to watch, he just chalked it up to one of your movies.
But when he realized that it's been a little longer than 10 minutes and the sniffles started getting more profound is when he went to the living room to see what was going on.
Walking in, he noticed your form covered in a blanket with a tissue box right beside you and a trash can on the other side. It's almost full of how many were in there.
"Darling, what's the matter?" He walked towards you as you continued to cry.
"Sorry haha, sometimes movies as simple as this tend to pull at my heartstrings ya know?"
"Up?"
"Yeah! The man lost his wife, who was his entire world, and people threatened to take his house, which was the last thing he had of his wife in a sense!"
Elliot could feel a warm smile make its way onto his face. It was very refreshing to see someone as lively as you. He loved how you weren't afraid to show how you felt.
"Any other movies that have you crying like this?"
"Inside out had me crying a bit when bing bong died."
"Bing bong?"
"Yeah! You totally have to watch it with me now!" You smile brightly at him, and how could he ignore you? Your smile always had him agreeing without a second thought.

Jenny's ongoing list of films watched 2024
February
January list, here.
Inland Empire (2006)*** It took three attempts to get through this long, confusing film. Like Mulholland Drive or the Season Three of Twin Peaks, Lynch films improve on repeat viewings even if meaning remains elusive. That is part of the joy-- sometimes you just vibe with it.
Death of Stalin (2017)**** One of my favorite films of the last two decades. A harried farce with the bloody-mindedness of Macbeth. Like the Scottish Play, we know how its going to come out, but the fun is in watching the articulate villain, played with delicious malice by Simon Russell Beale being outdone by a team of bumbling, petty bureaucrats and one very bad ass soldier. The Boyfriend (1970)*** Ken Russell's surreal tribute to the burlesque musical genre makes the most of its setting in the 1920s by putting his star Twiggy in iconic psychadelic reiterations of the flapper dress. If you opine the fact that drop waist dresses come back into style every 15 years or so, then this movie is as much to blame as anything. Poor Things (2023)*** Emma Stone gives a wild and convincing physical performance as Bella, a baby's brain in the body of her dead mother and Mark Ruffalo as typical 19th Century Rake Getting His Comeupance iscasting I didn't know I needed. I loved the yearning Godwin (Willem Defoe in truly amazing Frankenstein's monster makeup) and though I haven't read the book, I was drawn into the grotesque, ai generated world of the film. The aesthetics of this movie are as engrossing as the story and characters. Adventures of a Dentist (1965)** The Soviet version of the live action Disney comedies of the 70s, where a humble person is given magical power. Here a dentist is given extraordinary, almost magical abilities to perform dentistry without pain. He becomes a celebrity and his fall from grace involves him giving in to the decadent trappings of being a popular dentist. The humor has a darker edge than Disney though I wouldn't go so far as to call it a black comedy. Adolf Hitler: My Part in His Downfall (1973)** This Spike Milligan film plays like a double episode of Dad's Army, not least because of the presence of Arthur Lowe who plays practically the same character here as he does on the tv show. That is not the end of the world however and this is easy to like farce with Milligan's ascerbic, anti-authoritarian bent that is grittier than anything on the sitcom. The Master (2012)** I had high hopes for this, one of Phillip Seymour Hoffman's final films and his last collaboration with director Paul Thomas Anderson is loosely based on the origin story of Scientology. Joaquin Phoenix plays a shell shocked veteran who drifts into the path of the cult leader played by Hoffman. Amy Adams gives a chilling performance as his much younger, controlling wife who is the real power behind the cult. I think I would have an easier time with this film if Anderson hadn't gone around giving interviews saying that Scientology and it's founder L. Ron Hubbard had "helped a lot of people." Of course, this is PTA and Phoenix's character isn't helped at all and he makes the cult worse by being a violent enforcer for the leader's enemies. The levels of whitewashing involved in making a deeply misogynistic cult into a secret matriarchy is just...ugh. However, the homoerotic tension between Hoffman and Phoenix makes the film worth looking out. Murder of Quality (1991)** Made for TV adaptation of John Le Carre's second novel. Denholm Elliott plays Smiley as more doddering and anti-social than Alec Guinness' iconic version of the character. This early Smiley story is more a traditional English village murder mystery, ala Miss Marple, with Glenda Jackson playing Ailsa, Smiley's war buddy that runs a women's magazine. Christian Bale plays one of the students at an elite prep school that forms the economic backbone of the town. Le Carre is merciless in his portrayal of the toxic, petty characters, the wealthy and wannabe wealthy swamp dwellers who run rings around the local constabulary until Smilley steps in and withstands their slings and arrows long enough to solve the case.
The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes (1970)*** Sometimes you sit down to watch a movie with such low expectations that you are pleasantly surprised that it doesn't totally suck. The excitement of things not being as bad as you feared can blot out some of a movie's excesses. At the end of the day this is Billy Wilder, physically incapable of creating a boring movie throwing the whole bag of tricks at this faux biography of Holmes starring Robert Stephens and Colin Blakely. There's farce and physical comedy, verbal gymnastics and exotic locations. Holmes' possible homosexuality is tastefully hinted at and attempts to create a sensationalist account of his drug use, amount to little before the mystery gets rolling. One of the big delights is Christopher Lee as Mycroft whose scenes with Robert Stephens are bitchy queen pissing contests. Genevieve Page does a turn as a would be damsel in distress who turns out to be a worthy opponent to Holmes similar to Irene Adler.
Irma La Duce (1963)*** For some reason between this and Poor Things I ended up watching two movies about Parisian brothels this month. Billy Wilder based this pastiche of 1950s travelogue adventure films like To Catch a Thief and Charade on a French stage play. A strange attempt to weld the success of the Apartment with Some Like it Hot, reconfiguring a Marilyn Monroe vehicle as a reunion of Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine. Like the Apartment, Irma LaDuce is tinged with melancholy while avoiding a lot of the cliches about sex work that wind up dating so many films on this topic. The main complaint I have about Irma LaDuce s that it's about 45 minutes too long, a common complaint about many films of this period. (Damn Lawrence of Arabia and all who sail in her).
Witness for the Prosecution (1982)*** A made for tv adaptation of the classic courtroom drama, which credits Billy Wilder's screenplay of his film version. Ralph Richardson and Deborah Kerr star in this remake and honestly their chemistry is just off the charts and we're left to wonder how they never managed to make a film together before. Wendy Hiller, Diana Rigg and Beau Bridges round out the amazing cast. Lacks the tension and edge of Wilder's film but I'm having too much fun with Ralph to care.
The Major and the Minor (1942)**: Billy Wilder's first film as writer and director has some of the hallmarks of his later, greater works: farce, trains, mistaken identity, and queer themes in the form of a lesbian coded sister of Ginger Roger's romantic rival. That all the fuss is about fairly bland Ray Milland is easy enough to overlook as Wilder makes the film about toying with Rogers image as sophisticated, sexy, dancer. Typical Wilder inside jokes about the film industry abound, such as a craze for Veronica Lake hairdos among the tween set and swipes at Hollywood actors like Charles Boyer Rogers' childish masquerade to avoid paying full adult fare is preceded by a series of calamities where she's pursued and objectified by a lot of nasty older men. Hoping to escape their advances as well as the ignominity of turnstyle jumping, she maintains the charade through a long weekend with a lot of handsy tween boys until Milland's fiancee is discredited as a controlling social climber. There is a bizarre side track into her home town where Rogers also impersonates her mother before revealing her grown adult self to Milland. No one ever accused Billy Wilder of being restrained I guess.
The Children's Hour (1961)**** This classic of queer cinema was necessarily a scorched earth tragedy at the time of its release. William Wyler's dreamy, restless camera drags you into the warm, cozy life of this female partnership between Shirley Maclaine and Audrey Hepburn that seemingly has the potential to be a romantic partnership. When nasty gossips and spoiled children start a rumor that they are a couple, the scandal destroys their business and standing in the community. Terrorized by the homophobic townspeople, they are eventually "cleared" of the crime of being gay for each other, just when Maclaine's character comes to the brutal realization that she really is in love with Audrey Hepburn's character. It's hard to watch her grief and shame as she admits that the bullies have discovered a truth about her that she didn't know herself. A fact so many queer people can find relatable. The film is based on a play by Lilian Hellman which used the topic of homosexuality to expose the cruelty of female narcissists who bully their way into power. There is much in common with Hellman's The Little Foxes in that way, but the film, perhaps owing to Wyler's inherent romanticism has more of a Romeo and Juliet quality than the play. One feels that Audrey Hepburn has perhaps realized the truth in the lie, just a few moments too late.
Sweet Charity (1969)*** Directed by Bob Fosse, starring Shirley MacLaine and Sammy Davis Jr and Chita Rivera this classic musical combines the best of Fossee's signature choreography, sixties pop show tunes and the psychadelic aesthetics of the late 60s. This and the Boyfriend have a lot in common, though I think the music in Sweet Charity is more solid and the contemporary setting makes it a tad edgier. MacLaine plays yet another flavor of sex worker, a dancehall hostess and paid companion who seeks to be elevated out of her life into respectability through marriage. The fiancee here is uptight and lacking in appeal and when he finally just flakes out in the final reel it's no great loss to the film.
Thief (1981)** Atypical heist film starring James Caan and Jim Belushi, directed by Miama Vice creator Michael Mann. You can see the beginnings of that iconic 80s TV show, in this movie which favors long scenes of action being edited to music with sparse dialog. Caan squares off against Tom Signorelli a local mob boss who dares to threaten Caan's wife played by Tuesday Weld.

decided it was as good a night as any to watch MASH (1970). i was going to take detailed notes the way i've been doing during my current rewatch of MASH (TV) but the purpose of that has been so i have stuff to refer back to when creating fanwork. about halfway through the watch i decided it wasn't worth all of that, but i did still make some notes about what i liked and didn't.
the bad
i'm starting with the bad because it had a really big effect on my experience of watching this movie. no need for bullets because it's the one thing, but the one thing is really bad: the misogyny. given, i have a very weak stomach for sexual violence on screen, particularly against women, but like, under no circumstances would i recommend this movie to anyone without a very heavy-handed content warning.
i'd been forewarned against it but i still underestimated how bad it would be. it was cruel and it left such a bad taste in my mouth i don't think i can rewatch, and if i ever do, i'd skip the offending scenes.
don't be fooled by the number of things on my "good" list. i'd trade 'em all for there to be less of the bad.
the good
genuinely touching opening credits. the MASH theme is immortal. beautiful shots of the compound. i'm gushing about it because i've worked in editing/motion graphics and i love a solid title sequence, this is one of the best i've ever seen
this movie hates christianity in general, but distinguishes catholicism from protestantism. i thought that was interesting considering MASH (TV)'s Frank is prejudiced against Catholics, something that is characteristic of a more rigid flavour of white supremacy that racializes people who would normally qualify as white (e.g. Italian and Irish Catholics). pointing out the difference tells me this movie is aware of evangelical christianity being the chief religious influence on American public policy, including foreign policy
this movie really hates the army, it could just stand to do better at hating the ideologies that prop up the army as well
hawkeye will call any man "babe" or "baby"
trapper john and his mysterious parka of assorted sundries
that's another thing. this movie is really gay, which does not absolve it of its sins
"Captain Pierce, did you call me?" "No, my name is Hawkeye"
Mclean's Henry Blake is way more likeable than movie Henry Blake, but the similarities are all there
i need to talk about the tone of this movie. so going back to the title sequence, part of the reason i like it so much is because it perfectly establishes the tone of the entire movie. larry gelbart once said that the title sequence to MASH (TV) "prepares you for what you are about to watch" and while I agree with that statement completely, I think it's doubly true of its film counterpart. there's this melancholy feeling that persists throughout the whole movie. kind of depressing tbh, despite how boisterous and silly the events on screen can get. there's a lot of mood lighting, quiet conversations. outside it's eternally overcast. when i think of it and compare it to MASH (TV) I understand why Robert Altman hated the show so much. tonally, it's completely different. when you hear the japanese cover of "happy days are here again" in the movie, it feels especially ironic, rather than lighthearted as it can be on MASH (TV). "my blue heaven" sounds even darker. but inspite of the gloom that pervades the movie, it's never quite as tragic as the objectively tragic moments on MASH (Bless You Hawkeye, GFA, Sometimes You Hear the Bullet, Guerilla My Dreams etc). the ending really nails that sad, but not too sad vibe.
once again, oliver jones is the hottest surgeon at the 4077th
elliott gould is a close second
trapper and hawkeye are in love... to everyone's peril. gay wrongs. so many gay wrongs in this movie.
did you think i was done talking about how in love trapper and hawkeye are in this? hawkeye, trapper and duke are supposed to be something of a trio in this movie, but as soon as trapper arrives duke is third-wheeling constantly. hawkeye says to trapper when he meets him, "do i know you from somewhere?" and a slow smile spreads across trapper's face later, while tossing around a football, hawkeye catches a pass from trapper and recognizes him by it as trapper does a slow walk towards hawkeye with his hands in my pockets good god, be still my piercintyre loving heart: trapper: [describing a pass] lucky your mouth wasn’t open or it would’ve got stuck in your throat hawkeye: baby! why it’s trapper john mcintyre!
we are never having the casual sex on MASH debate ever again, hawkeye settled it in this movie: (the) lieutenant dish: hawkeye, you have to remember, i’m married hawkeye: i’m married. i’m happy. i love my wife. if she was here, i’d be with her dish: i’m very happily married hawkeye: there is no question to loving anybody, it is a question of only helping.
