Backtrack (2014)
My rating: 2014
This thing is called "War Is Hell" according to the title card in the movie itself, and I assume they changed it to keep people from making the obvious "war may be hell, but it's nothing compared to this movie" jokes. I (mercifully) fell asleep halfway through, and feel absolutely no compulsion to go back and watch the rest.

While Goyon was thus embroiling French policy at Rome, a few miles to the south on the Tyrrhenian coast the Bourbon Francis II and his eighteen-year-old bride, Maria Sophia Amalia, were making their last stand at Gaeta. The imminence of the fall of still another royal throne to the Sardinian bandits, as the Empress [Eugénie] now regarded them, enraged her fully as much as the plight of the Pope. Their case was the more appealing because of the spirit and pluck of the young Queen. A Wittelsbach, younger sister of Elizabeth of Austria, she was, like the Austrian Empress, of exquisite loveliness. During the siege she would ride up to the batteries, indifferent to the shells falling about her, to encourage the gunners and to comfort the wounded. The thought of so much beauty in distress — for her conduct was well broadcast in the Legitimist press throughout Europe — had the power to exact sympathy from the most hardened anti-royalist. To the Empress it was emotional dynamite. Eugénie herself had been known to say that if France were in danger she would be the first to mount her horse and rally the troops. Maria Sophia’s heroism exactly suited Eugénie’s romantic conceptions of queenly conduct. As in the case of Louise of Parma, the Empress took the young Queen’s cause as her own and began begging the Emperor to send the French fleet to the aid of the besieged royal couple.
Napoleon himself as early as September 26, on his return from Algeria, had already conceived of the idea of sending a naval force to Gaeta as part of his formal, public opposition to the invasion of southern Italy. Perhaps he had in mind the reports of Legitimist agitation and believed the presence of his fleet would be a fitting gesture to placate clerical opinion. On October 13 the French government announced that Rear Admiral de Tinan would proceed to Gaeta to forestall a Sardinian attack by sea.
How much the Empress had to do with this decision is conjectural. Whatever the truth of the matter, the British and Italian diplomats attributed this “politique de sentiment” to her “inspiration” and blamed her for the creation of a maddening situation. The French fleet did not interfere with the siege operations on land but it did hold at bay the Sardinian fleet on the sea and made possible the revictualling of the beleaguered town. The move, inconsistent with the rest of French policy, seemingly irrational, was infuriating to Cavour.
Yet after all, even if the Empress had brought to pass this demonstration of sympathy for Francis and his wife, she had not accomplished much. Admiral Tinan was told that the policy of the French government had not changed. He was to station his fleet offshore only to assure the Bourbon King a dignified means of escape, and he should try to persuade him to capitulate. The outcome of the siege was never in doubt. As Gramont remarked, the French gesture had been rather like dangling a rope always out of reach in front of a drowning man.
(...) The winter saw a resumption of her futile efforts to save Francis II and the commencement of a long correspondence with Maria Sophia. The Queen initiated the exchange on January 4 in order to express her gratitude to the Empress for the “generous interest” that she had taken in her plight. “In the situation where I find myself there is nothing more consoling than the sympathy of friends as highly placed as you ; your approbation is the sweetest encouragement possible to strengthen the convictions of my heart,” wrote the wife of a Bourbon to the wife of a Bonaparte.
Despite the fact that on January 19 the Emperor suddenly withdrew his fleet and permitted Sardinian operations on both sea and land, the Empress resolved to reassure Maria Sophia of her unaltered good will. Her letter, apparently shown to many ladies in the court, made a sensation. The Sardinian charge d’affaires reported to Cavour that everyone was quoting one sentence in particular: “I like to proclaim it, Madam; you can be assured of all my admiration, of all my sympathy, and furthermore, you have right and justice on your side.”
Brave words, but they availed nothing. Within less than a month after the withdrawal of Tinan’s squadron came the capitulation. Francis and Maria Sophia escaped on a French ship kept in readiness for this purpose in Naples and fled to Rome and to the protection of the Pope. But for years the Empress clung tenaciously to the hope of a Bourbon restoration in Naples. In October, 1861, she told the papal nuncio: “... you can not doubt all the sympathy I felt for that great and noble misfortune. Well, I hope, I ardently desire that Her Majesty [Maria Sophia] will recover the crown of Naples.” In 1863 the resurrection of an independent Bourbon kingdom was to become an integral part of her master plan for French reorganization of the map of Europe, to be accomplished with the help of Austria.

I may have posted this before but it's honestly one of my favorite videos of WLW/MLM solidarity: Sophie B. Hawkins and Clive Barker passionately and entertainingly arguing down Christine O'Donnell on Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher in 1997.
Extremely good gay moments in this:
Clive jumping in to make absolutely over the top jokes about sodomy and "oral" plans at 2:00
Sophie getting worked up around 3:27 and pulling her feet up onto her chair so she can argue more effectively
O'Donnell saying "I don't know what Jesus you've been talking to" and Sophie yelling "You don't know who we've been talking to, that's the problem!" at 4:15
O'Donnell saying "What God? The God of the Bible or your version of God in Hellraiser?" and Clive exclaiming triumphantly "So you saw it!" at 4:44
Sophie's big jacket throughout god she looks good
Sophie also has her shoes off and is sitting in the most barefoot queer woman way possible at 6:26, I love her, I want to be her
she also argues for equal civil rights clearly and convincingly, GOD, can one gay really have it all
Clive and Sophie making identical "god, okay, keep it together" expressions at 8:23 after O'Donnell says the phrase "people who aren't accepting God's best in their lives"
followed by Clive responding to O'Donnell saying she has "homosexuals" in her family by acidly saying "Some of your best friends?"
Sophie letting out a jungle shriek and levitating out of her chair at 10:36 when O'Donnell says there's no such thing as separation of church and state and there shouldn't be
10:58: O'Donnell mentions "ex-homosexual program"s, Sophie starts to jump in, Clive puts a hand on her wrist and she nods and says "Go" like a falconer releasing a falcon
On coming back from another commercial break at 11:47 Clive has joined Sophie in sitting incorrectly and barefoot on his chair
Sophie getting HEATED when O'Donnell says "When you've experienced God's grace in your life--" "We've ALL experienced God's grace in our life. That's an insult. That's an insult!" at 13:52, SPIRITUAL QUEERS LET'S GO
followed immediately by her and Clive sharing a big hug
followed immediately by Bill Maher joking about the two of them leaving together, and the two of them handclasping with the tight grip of rock climbers holding each other to the face of the earth
followed by Sophie asking how O'Donnell might feel about her and Clive getting married, O'Donnell saying "that would be a heterosexual marriage" and Sophie and Clive jumping over each other to say "NO NO NO IT WOULD NOT BE"
Listen, there's parts of this that are hard to watch. Bill Maher is here; he says stupid, provocative shit, including some stuff to O'Donnell that's absolutely gross. Christine O'Donnell is an out-and-out Christian nationalist. Clive and Sophie are defending their basic dignity and humanity and O'Donnell is allowed to have the last word, even though the last word is her laughing awkwardly as she fails to find a clobber text in the epistles.
But goddammit do I love watching Clive and Sophie. I love watching them hold each other's hands and bash back at O'Donnell and cackle while they do it. I mean it when I say this is queer history, to me, that this is what I want to be in the world. I want to take off my shoes and hold my siblings' hands and laugh heaven's laughter when they try to make me quiet.

‘Bridgerton’s Ruby Barker Calls Out Netflix & Shondaland After Suffering “Psychotic Breaks” – Deadline
Ruby Barker is opening up about her experience on Bridgerton and calling out Netflix and Shondaland for not being more supportive during what she calls “psychotic breaks.”
“When I went into hospital a week after shooting Bridgerton Season One it was really covered up and kept on the down-low because the show was going to be coming out,” Barker said during an appearance on the LOAF Podcast. “During filming I was deteriorating. It was a really tormenting place for me to be because my character was very alienated, very ostracized, on her own under these horrible circumstances.”
She continued, “Not a single person from Netflix, not a single person from Shondaland since I have had two psychotic breaks from that show have even contacted me or even emailed me to ask if I’m okay or if I would benefit from any sort of aftercare or support. Nobody.”
Barker played the role of Marina in the first two seasons of the drama series. Marina was a controversial woman in the series following a pregnancy scandal. In real life, Barker was facing mental health issues due to the show.
Barker explained that a lot of things were happening at the same time when the show was set to premiere adding, “My life was changing drastically overnight and yet there was still no support and there still hasn’t been any support all that time. So I was trying really really hard to act like it was okay and that I could work and that it wasn’t a problem.”
“It’s almost like I had this metaphorical invisible gun to my head to sell this show because this show is bubbly and fun. I don’t wanna come out and poo-poo on that because then I might never work again!” she added.
Bridgerton is a drama series on Netflix created by Chris Von Dusen and based on the book series of the same name by Julia Quinn. Shonda Rhimes’ Shondaland produces the show for the streamer
Watch Barker’s full interview in the video posted below.

Just call her Kimberly Featherington.
Kim Kardashian made her Bridgerton super fan status known at the end of March, just before Regé-Jean Page announced his exit from the Netflix drama. But as it turns out, she's had more of an impact on the show than she ever realized.
Bridgerton star and Kardashian super fan Nicola Coughlan, who plays Penelope Featherington/Lady Whistledown, revealed on Twitter that she and her TV sisters here highly influenced by Kim and her real-life sisters.
"As the world's number one Bridgerton stan does Kim Kardashian know that the Kardashians were a massive inspiration for the Featheringtons and we talked about them all the time during our fittings?" Nicola tweeted. "Because I feel like she should know this."
Kim soon responded, with a very reasonable number of exclamation marks.
"WHAT?!?! I am freaking out!!!!!!" she responded. "This tweet was sent to me on my Bridgerton group chat! Can I please come to a fitting?!?! It would make my whole life!!!!!! I love you Lady W!!!"
According to other interviews, they knew damn well on the Bridgerton series that Barker has issues she was dealing with. But see, when you're dealing with the Church of Scientology, you're not likely to get much help, especially if torturing a young woman on set was the whole point.
Exactly what kind of person IS Shonda Rhimes, to go along with depravity such as this? Netflix mimicked the Kardashian women and their favorite hobby of latching onto black men, leeching off of them and leaving them mentally in jeopardy.
This makes two toxic, embedded stories of real people and their personal lives in Bridgerton.
