soooo
#I’m ranting in the tags bc I don’t want my words to be so bold#anyway#idk if this is what the 1975 does per say with their ‘sign ups’ on their website#but I think they use the information of how many fans they have that sign up in certain cities to choose where to tour#I could be completely wrong#but even if I’m not#I genuinely think more artists should do that#like it’s not a super great way to see how many fans are in a place that maybe isn’t normally toured in#but it’s a starting point#and if there’s a big demand of fans in a certain city that a band or artist has never been to or hasn’t been for a while#then they tour there#you know??#it seems like within the last 2-4 years specifically artists are choosing to go to the most popular places#I’m speaking as a Canadian but like#6+ years ago I remember big artists and not so big/not so small artisrs#going to Vancouver and Edmonton and Calgary and Montreal and Regina and Ottawa and Toronto etc#and now we’re lucky if they go to both Vancouver and Toronto#leaving out the entire middle of the country when Canada is the second biggest country in the world#it fucking sucks for people who can’t afford to travel for concerts#and I feel like I’m never going to see anyone ever again because of it#like Harry only going to Toronto was a low blow#but NIALL?? that one hurt#especially because that’s essentially travelling to the other side of the country for me#it makes me feel defeated#idk I’m bitter today#rant

“I Am YEG Arts” Series: Trevor Duffy
Tumblr media
If you grew up believing in tickle trunks, friendly giants, and a lovable frog who fell for a French-speaking piggy—lucky vous. Not only was it a great time for children’s television, it was a great time to be a dreamer, too. For some of us, like Trevor Duffy, that dreaming never stopped. Today he’s an accomplished puppeteer who’s created more than 100 puppets for productions including TV shows, music videos, web series, and more. His latest venture? The Imaginarium! A travelling puppet wagon that tours across Western Canada, delighting a new generation of dreamers with every show. Builder, creator, puppet show maker—this week’s “I Am YEG Arts” story belongs to Trevor Duffy.
Tell us about your connection to Edmonton.
I was born and raised in Edmonton, north side Castle Downs. Later in my twenties, I ventured to the south side, Whyte Ave, which is where I met a lot of other artists and creative people. With its vibrant music and art scene, the Whyte Ave community really inspired me to create more and gave me an opportunity to experience a wide range of artistic genres. I eventually settled on the east side of the city and work out of a quaint basement studio, with our backyard doubling as our rehearsal space.
How did you get your start as a puppet builder and puppeteer? What did that path look like?
I was always building something at a young age, experimenting with stop-motion animation or cutting up cushions to make puppet heads, but the big shift into really experimenting with puppets came from building black-light puppets for the Castle Downs Variety Show. After a few years of that, we decided to put on our own adult sketch variety show hosted by a puppet, Gabbo, borrowed from a Simpsons episode. We ran that show for a few years, which culminated with “the Death of Gabbo” on Halloween, where an executioner chopped off the puppet’s head, indefinitely ending that series.
Fast-forward, and I was lucky enough to land a job building and puppeteering for a network series called FELT UP. After working on that series, we decided to try our hand at developing our own, which we did. Now the puppet blood was flowing through my veins, and we needed a vessel to consistently produce puppet content. This is when The Imaginarium Puppet Theater was born—a puppet stage for travelling performances. We’ve been running this “theater” for the past six years across Western Canada, and during this time have been involved in building multiple puppets and puppeteering for local artists’ music videos, web series, TV pitches, and marketing campaigns.
Tumblr media
What’s one piece of advice you wish you’d had when starting out? And what’s something you knew instinctively that’s still serving you?
Create your own opportunities. Put on your own shows, host your own events, shoot your own series. Whatever your medium is, do it, and do more of it. By creating your own opportunities, you’ll meet more people doing what you’re doing, creating more opportunities for yourself. This also gives you a chance to continually refine your craft.
What’s one of the biggest professional risks you’ve taken, and how did it influence where you are today?
It has to be building The Imaginarium, our travelling puppet wagon. It was the classic cart-before-the-horse story. We sold the idea before having built the puppet theater, or any of the puppets, or having even written a script. Originally, it was to be a variety-show format, but we opted to go for a storyline the further we got into it. As we shopped out our non-existent puppet show, we were very clear with everyone that we were still in the creation phase, but would have something together soon. Luckily enough, out of the hundred or so festivals, organizations, communities, rodeos, etc. that we reached out to, five or so liked the idea and booked us the following year. Here we are, six years later, still in our wagon, writing new shows each year and building a wider and wider audience.
What would you say is your greatest strength as a creative?
Having the desire to learn new things as I go and allowing myself to fail along the way. I have never been “formally” taught how to make a puppet. It has been years of trial and error, watching YouTube videos, and experimenting with different materials and fabrics. Every puppet is made from scratch from a pattern I create. Patience is key.
Tell us about the first thing you ever made that inspired your career path?
That would have to be Johnny 5, the first felt puppet I ever made. Although he was named after the robot in Short Circuit, he did not look like him. Johnny 5 was made from this blue fuzzy material with big dreadlocks and eyes that I got from the Dollar Store. You would attach the puppet to your body by slipping it onto your feet and using rods that were attached to its hands to move/dance around with it. This came about after a night with friends where we attached coat hangers to an old stuffed monkey and collectively tried to make it dance. I can tell you that when operating a puppet, a single brain controlling the movements is far more effective than three brains trying to do it.
Tumblr media
Who’s someone inspiring you right now?
I’m heavily inspired right now by visionary artists like Fabian Jimenez or Alex Grey. I am currently taking some of this inspiration and incorporating it into our first-ever adult show. I also love the whacky creativity of Becky Sloan and Joseph Pelling. They are the creators of Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared. A few other artists inspiring me are Ingrid Hansen, Chloe Ziner, and Jessica Gabriel, from BC. These women use extremely creative ways of incorporating storytelling with technology, making a much more immersive experience.
Tell us a little about what you’re currently working on or hoping to explore next.
Every year we like to write/create a new family show for The Imaginarium, so that is what we are currently working on. We will be bringing back some audience favourites and a new BIG surprise puppet. I have also been experimenting with some new technology for our first-ever adult show. Without giving too much away, we are working on pieces to visually enhance the performance and aide in the storytelling. We are all very excited about this next challenge.
When you think YEG arts, what are the first three things, people, or places that come to mind?
I think of the amazing illustrators and muralists in our city and the support that they’ve provided us over the years. I think about the venue owners and festival promoters who allow us to showcase and experiment with new creations. I think of our amazing culinary food scene that fills our bellies and fuels our creativity.
Great art has been and continues to be created here. YEG is an extremely supportive and vibrant arts city, and I’m very happy to have established my roots here.
Want more YEG Arts Stories? We’ll be sharing them here all year and on social media using the hashtag #IamYegArts. Follow along!

About Trevor Duffy
Trevor Duffy is a self-taught puppeteer and puppet builder from Edmonton, Alberta. Like many others, his passion for puppets came with watching shows like Fraggle Rock, The Muppet Show, Sesame Street, Harriot’s Magic Hats, The Friendly Giant, and Mr. Dressup. Trevor has handmade approximately 100 puppets since 2002 and puppeteered in productions such as web series, music videos, television shows, and marketing campaigns. His latest venture, established in 2016, is a travelling puppet wagon called The Imaginarium. This live-theater puppet show has performed all across this province, putting smiles on the faces of all audiences.
As computer generated animation and graphics threaten to take over in this digital world, Trevor’s goal is to ensure puppets/puppetry remains a viable art form, all the while shining a spotlight on Edmonton and Alberta.

young love running through our veins - tyson jost
Tumblr media
series: this is getting good now
word count: 3,055
summary: it’s time to meet the family.
Flick couldn’t lie—she’d been delaying the dinner since she flew into Edmonton.
When their time in Summerland ended, Flick had driven with Mat and Cheyenne back to Coquitlam; they had dropped Tyson off in Kelowna on their way through, so that he could fly back to Edmonton and Flick had cried despite the plane ticket she already had to meet him two weeks later.
In those two weeks, she’d cut a million and one people’s hair, rearranging any appointment that was supposed to take place during her impromptu trip and spoken to Tyson every day. Multiple times.
Being in Edmonton and St Albert was fun, mostly because Tyson had made a point of playing tour guide and he wasn’t half-assing it. She couldn’t remember ever having laughed so hard as when Tyson was narrating the Mini Ponies at the Edmonton Zoo.
The only parts she wasn’t enjoying were when she was rejecting invites to dinner with Tyson’s family on the grounds of their relationship being weeks old. Sunday dinner was unavoidable, though—a must for Tyson when he was in town, so Flick put on the best dress she’d brought with her and sat in Tyson’s passenger seat.
“If you’d come during the week, you wouldn’t have to meet everyone all at once,” Tyson teased gently, noticing the way she was picking her fingernails.
“Yes, I’m full of bad decisions,” she said swiftly and tightly, her eyes never leaving the road ahead of them.
“I can take you back if you really don’t want to meet them,” Tyson offered.
“No!” she gasped loudly. “I do want to meet them! I just can’t get it out of my head that they won’t like or that I’m not good enough for you or that I’m just with you because you play pro-hockey—I’m not!” she added quickly, turning her head with wide eyes. “If that was my goal, I would have let Mat set me up with Tito last year.”
“Flick—I—why wouldn’t you be good enough for me?” he asked, his stuttering clearly because he was trying to figure out what exactly he should respond to. “You are. Too good for me, even.”
“I’m a hairdresser—”
“Why do you say that like it’s a bad thing? You love being a hairdresser.”
Flick looked back at the road and said in a quiet voice, “I didn’t even finish high school and you went to college—what if they don’t think I’m smart enough?”
“Flick—you’re overthinking it. I promise that everyone in my family is going to love you, and nobody is going to care what you did at school and you’re so smart anyway so please stop overthinking it.”
“I’m not smart,” Flick said, her voice even quieter. Barely above a whisper. Tyson turned his head, opening his mouth but Flick pressed on firmly, “No, don’t try and tell me I am because I’m not and I never have been.”
Tyson didn’t try to say anything, just kept his mouth firmly shut.
His family was truly lovely, not that Flick had expected any different. Laura Jost had a reputation for being perfect in every which way, and Flick would never tire of hearing Tyson speak about his grandparents. Kacey was a delight, immediately ready to poke fun at her brother whilst making sure Flick felt welcome.
What surprised her the most was how much they already knew about her—that she was a hairdresser, that she had known Mat since they were children, that her father was British, that she would pick around any tomatoes in a salad. All of it said casually, as if they’d heard it a million times before.
Tyson never strayed too far from her side, for which she was grateful. Just his presence reduced the anxious energy running through her body, and his touch was all that much more effective.
“You good?” he asked her in a brief moment when they were the only ones in the living room, his voice quiet and just for her.
“Great.”
“They love you,” he told her. “Grandpa told me I’m not allowed to let you get away.”
Flick giggled nervously, her eyes immediately finding Tyson’s shoes, “no he didn’t.”
He gasped, “You calling me a liar?”
“Maybe I am,” she joked back.
“I’ll go get him if you want—you can ask him yourself.”
He started to walk away, heading in the direction of the kitchen and his family. Flick laughed, though it was more akin to a scream, and she wrapped her entire body around his arm just to stop him from moving. It was difficult for her to feel tension release from his shoulders as she did so, a reminder of their conversation in the car and the realisation that he had been holding onto it as much as her.
Sitting down for dinner was just as easy as everything else that evening. Flick listened to all the stories they had to share about Tyson and watched as he embraced them all proudly, even adding to the embarrassing details himself if somebody left something out.
She was so comfortable that her entire world shifted with one innocent question from Grandma.
“Have you thought more about moving out of that tiny apartment? Surely we can find something a bit bigger for you.”
“I was thinking we could work that out when Flick moves to Denver.”
When Flick moves to Denver.
When Flick moves to Denver.
“I—I’m sorry, can I please be excused for a moment?” she asked timidly, her hands scrunched up in the napkin on her lap.
“You don’t have to ask,” Laura said kindly.
With as much of her manners remaining as she could muster, Flick folded her napkin carefully on the table and pushed her chair back so precisely it made no sound at all. She didn’t run from the table, even though she wanted to, because it would be impolite; she made sure she was entirely out of sight before picking up steam and throwing herself into the bathroom.
Luckily her phone was still hiding in her bra, and she was able to frantically dial Mat while she tried to work out if she should sit down somewhere or just stand in the middle of the room.
“I thought you were having dinners with the Jostses?”
“He expects me to move to Denver.”
There was a silent beat and Flick pulled her phone from her ear just to make sure that the call hadn’t cut out.
When Mat finally did speak, it was slowly, “I don’t think he expects anything of you. He probably wants you to.”
“Denver.”
“That’s where he lives most of the year,” Mat stated matter-of-factly. “I’d want Chey to move with me if I ever left the Island.”
“He just said it,” Flick stressed. “Super casually to his entire family.”
“And you ran and hid in the bathroom immediately.”
“I didn’t run,” she spat.
“Flick, he’ll be waiting on the other side of the door panicking that he’s ruined everything by panicking you. I’m hanging up on you and you’re going to talk to him.”
“But Mathew—”
“Bye!”
The call ended but Flick still held her phone to her ear, hoping that it would come back to life. As seconds dragged on, she started to mentally roll through her list of people to see who else she could possibly call. Only, Tyson had quickly become the next highest person on her list.
Flick opened the bathroom door slowly, hoping it would make no noise at all so she could take her time walking back to the dining table. It didn’t matter, though, because, as Mat had predicted, Tyson was posted up against the wall. His head lifted before the door was even properly open.
“Are you okay?” he asked, pushing off the wall and taking one step in her direction.
Flick froze with her hand still on the bathroom door. She eventually managed a nod, but Tyson didn’t move and let her pass him.
“I’m fine, Tyson,” she said, forcing a smile.
Nobody brought attention to it when they sat back down at the table and Flick could only imagine what Tyson told them. Maybe she was supposed to fake food poisoning, or maybe she was supposed to apologise for every anxiety she’d ever had. Nothing was ever said, and she tried to keep up with the conversation that moved on around her, with the weight of Tyson’s hand pressing down on her thigh.
The conversation was revisited when they stood in the middle of the AirBnb—the one Tyson had booked for them because Flick had been worried about taking up too much space at his mum’s, and that was before she’d even worried about meeting his family ‘too soon’.
It had to happen, Flick knew that, but no matter how often she wiped her palms on her dress they would be sweaty again within seconds. It hasn’t escaped her mind that it could all be about to end.
Tyson sat on the couch and Flick stood against the wall, waiting for everything to break around her. It wouldn’t be dramatic, she didn’t think; definitely not loud and angry. It would be heartbreaking, though, and that was way worse.
“You don’t want to move to Denver with me?” Tyson asked, cutting through the silence that had overcome them since they stepped out of his mum’s house.
“I don’t know. I didn’t expect you to just drop it at dinner with your family,” she admitted, her heart racing in her chest. “Before we’d even spoken about it.”
Tyson paused, his mouth half open. Flick could practically see the cogs whirring in his mind.
“We haven’t spoken about it?”
“No? I’d remember if we had,” she said.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered. “We talked so much about stuff you wanted to see and do in Denver that I guess I didn’t realise it was only when you were coming to visit.”
Flick nodded and honestly couldn’t disagree with him. It made sense, she supposed, that he would assume she’d move to Denver—after all, it’s not like he was able to demand a trade to Vancouver just for her sake.
“If I didn’t want to move with you, would that be okay?”
Tyson inhaled, before sighing, almost put out that he even had to answer, “Yeah, Flick. I’m not going to make you.”
“I’m not saying I don’t want to or that I won’t… I should think about it, right?”
“Yeah.”
“Are you mad at me? For not saying right away that I’ll come?”
“No, Flick,” he sighed. “I’m not mad at you, I’m just trying not to accidentally force you into coming if you don’t want to.”
Flick nodded. Just from the softness in his eyes, it was obvious he was telling the truth, even if her mind was struggling to reconcile it. It was the first time she’d ever seen him as anything other than happy-go-lucky.
“Can you come sit down with me?” he asked, still quiet and even more wary than he had been previously. “You’re so far away.”
There was a world between them, the entire living room even if it was only really a few steps.
“You promise you’re not mad?”
“Yeah,” he said slowly. Seriously. “Promise.”
Her feet carried her to him faster than she expected, those few steps disappearing between them in an instant. She was drawn to him, as she always seemed to be, and, despite her anxieties, she folded herself onto the couch cushion beside him.
Tyson’s arms wrapped around her in an instant and she could feel the tension leave him just as she’d felt it leave him before dinner. Even if he hadn’t basically melted against her body, the sigh he let out would have been enough of a sign. She let herself be pulled into his body, wrapped her own arms around him and scooted closer on the couch cushion.
“I think you’re really smart for wanting to take time to think about it,” he said, nothing but a whisper in her ear.
“It’s not smart, it’s anxiety.”
“Why can’t It be both?”
“We don’t have to talk about it anymore, okay?”
Tyson whispered back an “okay” and kissed the top of her head. Flick didn’t think she’d ever been held in such a way—like someone was afraid they’d lose her if they let her go.
---
Getting on the plane back to Vancouver after a week and a half with Tyson was hard. They’d spent some more time with his family, and it was all as easy as it had been the first time. There were suspiciously few mentions of Denver as a city, much less of any living arrangements; she was incredibly grateful to Tyson for it.
Taking him to her own childhood home was far less scary. She already knew her parents would adore him—her mum was already making wedding plans based on everything Flick had said.
Tyson flew into Vancouver a week and a half after Flick left Edmonton and Flick threw herself at him when she met him at baggage claim. He’s as steady as he’s ever been, hockey doing wonders for his stability and his balance, even as Flick kicked her legs out and definitely made contact with something—she hoped it was just a suitcase and not a human being.
They were walking up the path to the front door when Flick’s hand shot out, gripping Tyson’s forearm and stopping him from moving any further.
“What? What’s wrong?” Tyson asked, noticing the wild look in her eyes.
“If my dad says anything you don’t understand, I’m sorry, it’s just because he’s British.”
Tyson nodded, waiting for whatever was going to come next—something extra to be added to the sentence but Flick was just standing there with pleading and frantic eyes.
“Okay… He’s British.”
Flick was appeased by that, though Tyson wasn’t sure why, and let go of his arm and was walking ahead of him to open the front door and announce to her parents that they had arrived. Both Flick’s mother and father were standing in front of them.
Flick’s stomach twisted painfully in her stomach as she watched in abject horror as her mother wrapped her arms around Tyson in a welcoming hug. He reciprocated without hesitation, thankfully, but it did little to make her feel better.
Tyson was promptly instructed to refer to Flick’s mother as Carrieafter he tried to call her Mrs Beecham, and then to call her father Malcolm, mid handshake, before he even had the chance to say anything different.
“Felicity hasn’t stopped talking about you since she got back from Okanagan,” Carrie said, still looking at Tyson even as she hugged Flick.
Malcolm agreed, “I’ve never known her to talk so much about anything.”
Flick looked anywhere but Tyson as her cheeks flamed—there was nothing in her head that could cool them down. Tyson was in his element, unsurprisingly, chatting away happily with Malcolm as they left the house to go collect his suitcase from the car.
Nothing went wrong. Flick had, predictably, tried to imagine every possible scenario in which something could go wrong, or something would be said that was so embarrassing that Tyson up and left without another word—that was still a possibility, because her parents knew well enough to not put their daughter through that the first time he met them. Tyson wasn’t even rattled by some of the strange turns of phrase her father used.
Once dinner was finished, and they’d spent many hours sitting on the back porch talking about hockey, and Okanagan, and Tyson’s family, Flick and Tyson were finally able to disappear into the basement bedroom that had become Flick’s when they moved house earlier that year.
The door had barely closed behind them before Flick was throwing herself at Tyson again, her arms securely around his neck as she kissed him breathlessly. Tyson didn’t hesitate to kiss her back, planting his hands firmly on her hips.
Flick pulled back, her smile impossible to remove, and she said quickly, in on one breath, “The first thing I have to say is that I love you and I—”
“You love me?” Tyson interrupted, despite how fast she was talking, before Flick could get any further.
“Yeah,” Flick nodded, managing to keep eye contact. “I do. A lot.”
“In my head, I told you that I loved you and then had to wait until we’d been together for at least three months until you said it back.” Tyson’s eyes lit up. “I never thought you were going to say it first.”
Flick tilted her head, leaning back into him. She asked, “You were going to say it before three months?”
“I was going to say it once you’d decided if you were coming to Denver or not,” he admitted. “I would have said it after dinner with myfamily, but I didn’t want to force you into coming.”
“But you do? Love me? Even though it’s been a month?”
“Yes, Felicity,” he said, feigning exasperation, “I love you.”
“Okay, that actually makes this way less scary if I’m being honest.”
“Makes what less scary?”
There was a silence, as Tyson waited for Flick to speak but Flick was waiting for a small wave of anxiety to pass. It was big, what she was going to say next, and no matter how much thought she’d given it since left Alberta and how certain she was
“Moving to Denver.”
“Oh,” Tyson breathed. “You’re moving to Denver? With me?”
“No,” Flick scoffed, “with my other boyfriend who plays for the Avs.”
“You’re sassy now that you know I love you, huh?” Tyson poked his fingers into her sides, making her jump, and used the distraction to pull her right against him as he leant back against the door.
“Is that Cale kid single?” Flick teased as she pushed all her weight against him. “He and I would get along.”
“You would,” Tyson agreed heartily. “But you would never go anywhere or talk to anyone or even think about stepping outside your comfort zone so I think you should come to Denver for me.”
Flick kissed him, the need to more overwhelming than it had ever been.

Taylor Swift Tours Masterpost
Hey everyone! For absolutely no reason at all, I’ve decided to compile a masterpost of all the regular setlists, surprise songs, covers, and guests on Taylor’s tours with links to YouTube videos when available (I’m only including videos that weren’t featured in official tour movies). I’ve noticed that, although there are posts like this for specific tours, like Red or reputation, some of this information is pretty hard to find, and it might be useful to some to have it all in one place. Also, I’m something of a Taylor Swift live performance ~connoisseur (💀), so I thought I might share. :) Here we go
Note: This is only part one. I don’t know when the posts for Red, 1989, and reputation will be up.
Part One: Fearless & Speak Now
Fearless Tour (April 23, 2009-July 10, 2010)
This tour did not feature a ‘surprise song slot,’ but she did sometimes change the setlist up a bit. She also brought out a couple of surprise guests (most notably John Mayer and Katy Perry), but not nearly as many as she did on her later tours.
Regular setlist: Fearless Tour
1. ‘You Belong with Me’
2. ‘Our Song’
3. ‘Tell Me Why’
4. ‘Teardrops on My Guitar’
5. ‘Fearless’
6. ‘Forever & Always’
7. ‘Hey Stephen’
8. ‘Fifteen’
9. ‘Tim McGraw’
10. ‘White Horse’ (x)
11. ‘Love Story’
12. ‘The Way I Loved You’ (x)
13. ‘You’re Not Sorry’ / ‘What Goes Around… Comes Around’ (x)
14. ‘Picture to Burn’
15. ‘Change’ (x)
16. ‘I’m Only Me When I’m with You’ (2009) (x) OR ‘Today Was a Fairytale’ (2010)
17. ‘Should’ve Said No’ (extended version)
Footnotes:
*Starting from the show in Uncasville, Connecticut on August 28, 2009, ‘Change’ was removed from the setlist. It was added back in Greensville, South Carolina on September 4, 2009. Starting from the show in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on October 1, 2009, it was removed again.
*European shows on the 2009 leg often removed ‘I’m Only Me When I’m with You’ as well as ‘Change.’
*Starting from the show in Brisbane, Australia on February 4, 2010, ‘Today Was a Fairytale’ replaced ‘I’m Only Me When I’m with You’ in the encore.
Surprise songs:
1. ‘The Best Day’ - Evansville, Indiana (April 23, 2009) Note: This was actually the first show of the tour. Unfortunately, I haven’t found a video of this performance.
2. ‘Two Is Better Than One’ - Brisbane, Australia (February 4, 2010) (x)
3. ‘The Best Day’ - Moline, Illinois (May 8, 2010) (x)
4. ‘Jump Then Fall’ - Foxborough, Massachusetts (June 5, 2010) (x)
Surprise guest performances:
1. ‘Your Body is a Wonderland’ and ‘White Horse’ (already part of the regular acoustic set but performed as a duet here) with John Mayer - Los Angeles, CA (May 22, 2009) (x)
2. ‘The Way You Love Me’ with Faith Hill - Nashville, TN (September 12, 2009) (x)
3. ‘Hot N Cold’ with Katy Perry - Los Angeles, CA (April 15, 2010)
Speak Now World Tour (February 9, 2011-March 18, 2012)
Regular setlists:
Eurasia (February 9, 2011-March 30, 2011)
Note: All of the performances linked below are from the Eurasian leg. Therefore, their quality is questionable. I’m only including these because this leg had a slightly different wardrobe than the North American leg which was recorded for the tour movie. I’m not including videos from performances where the costume is the same.
1. ‘Sparks Fly’
2. ‘Mine’
3. ‘The Story of Us’
4. ‘Back to December’ / ‘Apologize’ / ‘You’re Not Sorry’ (x)
5. ‘Better Than Revenge’ (x)
6. ‘Speak Now’
7. ‘Fearless’ / ‘I’m Yours’ / ‘Hey, Soul Sister’
8. ‘Fifteen’ (x)
9. ‘You Belong with Me’
10. ‘Dear John’ (x) - I’m only including this video because she wore her hair loose lol
11. ‘Enchanted’ (x)
12. ‘Long Live’ (x)
13. ‘Love Story’ (x)
North America & Oceania (May 21, 2011-March 18, 2012)
This is based solely on the first North American show
1. ‘Sparks Fly’
2. ‘Mine’
3. ‘The Story of Us’
4. ‘Our Song’
5. ‘Mean’
6. ‘Back to December’ / ‘Apologize’ / ‘You’re Not Sorry’
7. ‘Better Than Revenge’
8. ‘Speak Now’
9. ‘Fearless’ / ‘I’m Yours’ / ‘Hey, Soul Sister’
10. ‘Last Kiss’
11. ‘You Belong with Me’
12. ‘Dear John’
13. ‘Enchanted’
14. ‘Haunted’
15. ‘Long Live’
16. ‘Fifteen’
17. ‘Love Story’
Notes:
Starting from the show in Toronto, Canada on July 15, 2011, Taylor started playing acoustic covers right after her performance of ‘Last Kiss.’
Starting from the show in Denver, CO, on September 27, 2011, ‘Ours’ was added to the encore, right before the performance of ‘Fifteen’. This marked the live debut of the song. If Taylor had a surprise guest, this was the song she would usually cut from the setlist.
Starting from the show in Perth, Australia on March 2, 2012, ‘Safe & Sound’ (x) was added to the encore. ‘Ours’ (x) was shifted to the acoustic set and was played right before ‘Last Kiss.’ It was only skipped at the show in Auckland on March 17. I’m including a video because, although the performance from the encore was featured in the tour movie, this version takes place on the B-stage and has a different costume (the purple Susan Hilferty dress she wore for half the show lol).
At the shows in Melbourne, Australia on March 12, 2012 and Auckland, New Zealand on March 16, 2012, ‘Fearless’ was skipped.
Surprise covers:
1. ‘Livin’ on a Prayer’ by Bon Jovi - Newark, NJ (July 19, 2011) (x)

Fort Edmonton II
Summer, 202X
“Hey, let’s go out,” Étienne lazily tells him one afternoon. The weather has finally let up and it seems like the rest of the day might actually be nice, if he’s to judge by the sun he can finally see. It had been a quiet day, considering Edward had arrived late last night and he’d gone to pick him up from the airport. They’d gone back to Étienne’s place, Edward had emptied out some of his suitcase, he had freshened up and then they’d ended up spending the rest of the evening catching up and reacquainting themselves with one another, before getting some shut eye in the early hours of the morning.
It’s a good thing there’s no real plan to their visits other than “spend time together” and “go out and see the sights” and “whatever the hell else we feel like.” Now, if anything, they have grown comfortable with the idea of spending time without having to do anything grand and it’s nice to know that just being together is fine and welcomed as well.
From his spot on the couch, Edward shifts and rearranges himself until he’s no longer resting on Étienne’s chest, but instead laying next to him. He cranes his head up to find green eyes silently observing him, amused and fond, as always. He still looks different without his glasses, but the look suits him and he supposes the same can be said about him.
“Where to?” Edward asks without really moving. There’s no urgency to this, he can tell. Étienne probably feels a little restless and the idea of stretching their legs sounds nice, but at the same time, it’s nice and cool here, in Étienne’s living room and outside is most likely hot and sticky. However, it is the afternoon, so maybe it won’t be as bad, he tries to tell himself, even though he knows better.
“You’ll see,” Étienne replies with an enigmatic smile, before he bounces off the sofa, laughing, as he makes his way to the washroom, to presumably shower and change. Edward hears the end of what sounds like “it’ll be fun” and gets an eyeful of Étienne’s back, before he groans and flops back into the vacant spot left by his boyfriend.
 --
They take the métro and the ride is longer than usual, but not unpleasant. Edward pesters Étienne with questions as to where they’re going, until Étienne threatens to blindfold him if he doesn’t stop. Edward keeps quiet afterwards and figures he’ll piece it together once they get off at whatever stop. He’s endeared by Étienne’s buoyant childlike expression as they make their way to their destination and when they finally get off at Jean Drapeau, Edward still isn’t entirely sure where they’re going, even if it does narrow down some of Étienne’s usual go to places. He does wonder if Étienne doesn’t have any ulterior motives as to the place they’re going to, but he keeps the thought to himself as he follows his boyfriend to their destination.
Edward barely registers all of the information Étienne throws, as he speaks a mile a minute, mixing French and English as he normally does when he gets excited and exuberant. It’s nice to see him this animated and Edward does his best to keep up with him as they walk along the path. He gets the words “still open” and “a classic” and “fireworks” and leaves it at that.
It’s finally once they make it closer to the place that Edward realises they’re going to La Ronde and he can’t help but laugh. He hasn’t been here in ages and the place certainly brings back memories of previous trips of lifetimes ago. He thinks he’s in for an eclectic walk through the park and that Étienne will bring him from one ride to another as his fancy sees fit, but instead, Edward is surprised when Étienne heads in one specific location. He doesn’t pay much attention when Étienne takes his hand as it now feels like a natural thing for him to experience, but he is a little surprised when they make it to the ride.
Étienne comes to a stop in front of a rather older looking ride and grins large and wide at him, as if pleased with himself and his clever little plan of his; the proverbial cat that got the cream and such.
“Here we are!” He declares and steps out of the way so that Edward can get an eye full of his clever little scheme. Edward is – amused and touched somehow – when he sees the name of the ride. He’d recognised it earlier, but now that they’re standing in front of it, he wonders if Étienne is as aware of its significance as he is. (He’s sure he is. Edward has come to realise with time that everything Étienne does is calculated and that his boyfriend’s mind is a treasure throve of nostalgic memories.)
“Not quite the same as your original Fort Edmonton, but, it’ll have to do.” He adds, still grinning and Edward can’t help but laugh.
“Please, my own Fort Edmonton isn’t even fully original, so yes, it’ll have to do.” Edward quips as they step in the rather non-existent line to wait their turn. “Any particular reason you dragged me all the way here?”
Étienne shrugs, “Thought it’d be nice to come back and see it. I know it’s not the same as when we came here ages ago – it’s not even the same as during Expo, but – the view’s still nice.”
Edward nods at the comment and they both fall quiet for a moment.
“D’you ever look back on Expo and wonder if it wasn’t some mass hallucination brought on by some drug induced fever dream? Like – I was there, but whenever I look back I’m just like – no, that didn’t happen.”
Étienne laughs and leans closer to him for a moment, looking for support, before he teeter-totters over the railing, “My dear, I’m thoroughly convinced it was.”
They chuckle their way to the front of the line and get the next mini-rail all to themselves. Étienne has them sit up front, since it’s where they can get the best view, and pats the spot beside him. Edward follows him, before he takes his seat. It’s a shame this is only part of the original path the ride covered during Expo, but the scenery is still nice and the rhythmic movement of the old carts is soothing.
“Still the best seat in the house,” Étienne declares. Edward doesn’t offer any commentary to that and instead sits back to enjoy the proverbial ride. He smiles to himself when he feels his boyfriend’s hand on top of his own and spares him a glance that’s fond and loving. “It’s still the best seat to hold hands as well,” Étienne adds as he leans in close. Edward let’s him and agrees with the statement.
The mini-rail goes on its merry way, giving them a grand tour of the park. Edward troubles himself to take in the view and Étienne points out the interesting facts and changes in the landscape since the last time they’d done this, all the while holding on to his hand.
“I’ve gotta ask,” Edward interrupts some time later when they reach a clearing that gives them a good view of the city, “Why d’you name this after some part of – me – as opposed to any other place in Canada?” He’s always wondered, truth be told, but he never dared ask, afraid of what Étienne might tell him – that it would either be loaded or accidental. But now, he doesn’t care if Étienne tells him that he’d pulled the name out of a hat, or if it had meant something all along. They’re in a better place now and he knows how his boyfriend feels about him. He doesn’t need this to validate the time and energy he’s spent in this relationship anymore.
Étienne is quick with his answer; “It was the logical choice. You’ve always meant a lot to me – still do. It was my own way of honouring our friendship back then.”
It still manages to flummox him, despite everything and he supposes Étienne will always have that effect on him – will always find ways to surprise him, no matter how long they will know each other and he supposes that it’s one of the reasons he likes him. Still, his heart does a funny loop at that and it has nothing to do with the roller coasters that paint the backdrop of their little ride.
He turns back towards his boyfriend in time to see the setting sun reflect off his smiling face and the tableau steals his breath for a moment. The light gently bounces off Étienne’s glasses and highlights the auburn of his hair, while framing his face just so. For a second longer, Étienne is at peace with the world and Edward sees the pride Étienne has for his city. It’s breathtaking, in short, and there’s something unguarded about the expression on Étienne’s face that is always lovely to see. And finally, after all these years, it feels as though Étienne has put the last of his barriers down for good.
Edward lets go of Étienne’s hand and swings his arm around his shoulders, before his boyfriend can protest the absence of his hand. There’s no one else on the ride, but even so, and even though this type of outright display still isn’t his scene, he knows Étienne loves it. He makes an effort for Étienne every now and again and every time, he is rewarded with the prettiest of smiles that graces Étienne’s face.
And he has to admit that this, still, is the best view of the city.

Surprise
Skyla Rae Anne Mendes has a surprise for her Dad on tour.
Tumblr media
He didn’t realize when planning tour that Father’s Day would land on a show day. It was really unfortunate because not only was he not able to spend the day with his own Dad, he wasn’t able to spend the day with Skyla either.
He had invited the family to join him and Sky in Edmonton, but with scheduling they weren’t able to make it out.
He was trying not to be super bummed out about that, but it was hard. He felt like he was missing so much.
He threw an arm over his eyes as he rolled to his back. He wasn’t completely sure why he was waking before his alarm, the room was still really dark and quiet. He sighed, looking over so peak at Skyla, and sat up straight when he noticed that the spot she was taking up last night was empty.
“Skyla Rae!” He called, throwing the covers to the side and almost knocking the whole lamp off the table in his attempt to flip the light on.
All of their things were in the room but she wasn’t. He burst into the bathroom and his heart sped up more when he came up empty.
“Skyla Rae!” He yelled louder, running to the front door, and almost ripping it off its hinges.
He looks back and forth down the hall of the hotel they were staying in, it might as well been a ghost town.
“Holy shit,” He muttered to himself, mind racing so fast. He was shaking. “ANDREW!” He yelled, banging on the door, looking back and forth again. “SKYLA!” He leaned over to look further down the hall. “ANDREW!” He pounded on the door.
Andrew whipped the door open, almost getting hit in the face by Shawn who was still knocking. “Shhh!”
“I woke up and Skyla was gone, I can’t find her. She’s not in the room, I haven’t checked the lobby yet. I can’t-can’t-, Andrew I can’t- find her, I can’t-I’m scared.”
“Daddy! You can’t be in here!” She comes rushing down the hall towards the door where both men were standing.
Shawn’s heart stops at the sound of her voice, “Princess.” He sighs, crumbling to the ground and pulling her into his chest. “What are you doing? You scared me so bad!”
“You can’t be in here.” She says again, pushing at his chest.
“What?” Shawn looked up at Andrew.
“You heard her.” He shrugs.
“What do you mean I can’t be in here, what are you doing in here? How’d you get out of the room? Why are you up?”
“I got her when I woke up, we planned this.”
Shawn’s still confused, and his sleepless night was catching up with him.
“Go away! You can’t be in here.” Skyla points at Shawn.
“Why?” He asks with a pout.
“Because it’s a surprise! Now go!”
He looks at Andrew and then back to his girl, “Can I have a hug and a kiss first? You scared Daddy really bad.”
She stares at his face and notices how he’s still breathing weird. “You okay?” She asks softly.
“You scared Daddy, you have to tell me when you’re leaving even if it’s a surprise. That wasn’t okay, I woke up and you were gone and that scared Daddy.”
She pouts her lips as she looks up at Andrew and then back to her Dad. “I’m sorry Daddy, I didn’t mean to scare you. I just wanted to finish the surprise before you woke up.”
He smiles, caressing the side of her face and planting a kiss to her forehead. “When can I see the surprise?” He wiggles his eyebrows.
“No!” She jumps back into her business mode. “Go back!”
“Okay,” He kisses the top of her head. “I’ll pick you up for breakfast, be good.”
**
At the arena Shawn waits at the back doors for Brian and Skyla to return. Brian explained that he was taking her to go get the last few things she needed for her surprise.
When they walked in Skyla was in front of Brian, sneaky smile on her lips.
“Hi Daddy.”
“Hi Princess.” He eyes Brian who’s got his hands behind his back. “Whatcha up to?”
She giggles as she says, “Bout’ three feet tall.”
Shawn laughs, crouching and pulling her in for a hug. “That was funny, who taught you that?”
“Connor!” She yells as he starts to tickle her sides.
“What did you do with Uncle Brian?” He re-words his question.
“Nothing much,” She shrugs, turning to Brian. “Right?”
“Right.” Brian nods.
“What are you two up to? Hmm? Why are you being so secretive?”
“No reason.” Skyla shakes her head. “So have a good sound check Daddy, we’re gonna go...” She points down the hall.
“What? No!” He shakes his head. “No, what are you doing now?”
“I have to,” She points to where Tiffany has emerged from the dressing room.
“How long is it gonna take?” He asks with a whine.
“I’m gonna steal her till showtime, I set your stuff in your room.”
He groans, laying down on the ground.
“You’re so dramatic.” Brian laughs.
“I haven’t seen her all day.” He spies at Brian, catching her hand. “Kisses please.”
She leans over and kisses his nose, waving and running to Tiffany.
**
He’s looking around backstage, the intro to Lost in Japan has already started and he’s seconds from going on and she’s not here yet.
“Okay, where’s my kid?” He turns to Cez.
“She’s closer than you expect, go!”
Shawn walks on stage with furrowed brows, but forces a smile as he walks on stage. The crowd erupts when they see him, but when the lights go to the piano they lose their minds.
He turns around and laughs as he sees the piano.
Signs are taped to his piano reading;
“Happy Father’s Day Daddy!”
“My Daddy is a Rockstar!”
“I love my Daddy.”
But when he walks around and notices that Skyla is the one sitting at the piano playing the intro he loses it himself.
“Princess?” He yells running to the bench where she’s playing for him.
Her dress matches his shirt, her hair is done up in a cute ponytail with curled ends, and if he looks closely he can see some makeup on her face.
“Go sing Daddy!” She stops and waves at him.
“Oh my god.” He smiles, looking at the rest of the team who’ve picked up on the pause and expanded their time without Shawn singing yet. He walks up to the Mic totally blown away. “Hi everybody!” He yells out to the crowd. “Oof okay, sorry,” He smiles looking back at the piano. “Give it up for my daughter!” He waves towards her and smiling as the crowd yells louder than they did before. “Okay, okay” He shakes his head. “Sorry this is a dream come true for me.”
They all tell Skyla to play the beginning again and she does, this time playing the whole song while her Dad sings.
When the song is over she runs over to her Dad, smiling up at him as he hauls her up and kisses her cheek.
“How was your surprise?” She asks into his ear.
He laughs and hugs her, “I loved it!”
And with the excitement flowing through them Shawn unintentionally steps closer to the mic so now the whole crowd can hear them.
“Happy Father’s Day Daddy!”
“Thanks Princess.”
“Okay I have to go.” She looks over his shoulder where Cez was waiting for her.
“Okay,” He turns a little stepping that much closer to the mic. “Go take that make up off Missy, you’re 5, you’re gorgeous and will never need that stuff!” He plants one more kiss to her cheek and lets her go to go running to Cez and Brian.
**
He’s just laid Skyla down for bed on the bus and meets Andrew and Josiah.
“Thank you for setting that up tonight.” He whispers, knowing the rest of the team has headed off to bed as well.
“Of course, it was her idea actually.”
Shawn smiles, “Yeah she told me that.” He rubs his chin and grins, “Who taught her how to play?”
“You.” Josiah laughed.
“No?” Shawn shakes his head.
“The amount of days that girl has spent in the studio with you, or at sound checks, watching you write songs at home? Eddy sat her down while you were at an interview a month or two ago, and he showed her three notes? She knew the rest already.”
Shawn stares at Josiah and blinks three times before he responds. “You’re kidding?”
“Nope, she’s been working with Eddy since then so she can play the whole song perfectly like she did tonight.”
Shawn grins down at his hands and shakes his head, “Is it sad that I’m tempted to make that the new intro, with her on stage.”
“Not sad, but not possible either. Sorry man, but that’s a-”
“I know,” He shakes his head. “I wouldn’t put that pressure on her, she’s 5.”
“Speaking of her age,” Josiah grins, typing into his phone and then laughing. “Can we please talk about how Shawn Mendes told his five year old daughter to take her make up off because she was five and because she was gorgeous.”
Shawn looks at Josiah. “How did you know I called her gorgeous?”
Josiah turns his phone and shows Shawn the video of him telling Skyla that and then kissing her cheek before letting her go. He puts his hand over his mouth, “You could hear us?”
The boys both laugh as they nod. Just then Shawn’s phone pings with a text and notices that Josiah messaged him.
“Oh my god,” Shawn mumbles, swiping through the pictures. “I love this, this right here is the greatest thing I’ve seen all day.”
“They came out really well.”
“Thank you so much,” Shawn gushes, changing his phone background to the picture of him and Skyla on stage.
“Happy Father’s Day man.” Josiah nudges his knee.
“Thank you.” Shawn wipes his eye before standing to go kiss his daughters forehead just because he loved her.

Is Canada really that good? I've been thinking abt leaving my country and America is a no-no for me
This is such an incredibly difficult thing for me to write, as I’m a white person living in Canada and I don’t know a lot about POC experiences in my country. Everything I know about racism in Canada is from an outsider perspective. The only thing I can really speak on is my experiences as an LGBT person, and as an AFAB person who was born and raised here.
I'm not even close to an authority on how POC feel about living in Canada, and I can only give my opinion on that based on my personal experiences with my POC friends and acquaintances, plus what I have read in the news and from articles written by POC.
As well, this is from the perspective of someone who grew up in rural Ontario, and is living in Ottawa. Ottawa is not a large city, and it is in South Eastern Ontario. Canada is a very, very large country. South Eastern Ontario is no where near the same as Northern Ontario, or even Western Ontario, let alone Alberta or the Maritimes or the Yukon.
Please keep this in mind as a speak on what I do know. There is a lot more that I don’t, and if you are POC, I encourage you to seek out articles or posts written by POC citizens and immigrants about their experience coming to Canada and living here. As well as seeking out local articles written from the place you may want to move within the country.
Now that I have said that, let me begin:
Canada has it's issues with POC, and it would be incredibly ignorant for me to say we don't. There is still racism here, there is still anti-immigrant sentiment. There’s a very, very longstanding history of racism toward our First Nations/Indigenous/Native people. This history and mistreatment is becoming more well known about my country. It’s currently in debate whether we should label the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women a genocide because of the systematic negligence on the part of our authorities toward finding these girls and closing the numerous cold cases there are. As well, the ‘Starlight Tours’ -- or a more apt and less pleasing name the “Saskatoon Freezing Deaths” are also gaining a lot more attention toward how my country has treated it’s Indigenous people, and their systematic oppression. Not to mention the issue surrounding our residential schools and kidnapped indigenous children. <--there is a lot to unpack about Canada and it’s First Nations peoples. I could go on for paragraphs about this. I encourage any Canadian followers to read the articles in this paragraph and learn about these atrocities if you think our country is perfect.
Canada is not a utopia for POC. Brown and Black people as well, still suffer from racism from our authorities, as well as just daily racism from the people around them. And there are cases of police negligence and brutality that happen in Canada. This is a fact that our country has to face.
In terms of our government -- well, our parties are a lot different than the US. Here’s what our election looked like last year, and a basic overview on party policies. Our elections last like...a month? I think last year it was 78 days and that was a long ass election. Generally speaking, there isn’t as much of and Us or Them mentality with our parties and I think it’s because we have a Parliament system. In my perspective, they’re all sort of toeing the line because they need each other in order for any policy to pass, especially when we have a minority government.
So, no one other than the conservatives are aligning themselves with just one party. And the conservatives only do that because the PC party is really the only contending conservative power in Canada. The other three parties that have MPs in House are leftist parties.
Personally speaking, I’m a leftist. I side more with the NDP than the Liberals in terms of policies, but I don’t align myself with a specific party. I’m just a leftist. I usually vote Liberal, because in my district, they are the only contenders against the PC party, and ultimately my district is PC led because it’s a small town and it’s just how people vote there.
That’s how I look at our government. Notice how much more flippant it is than you might get from someone in the States? AND. I’m going to be perfectly honest here, not long ago, in our provincial government, we had a Premier named Kathleen Wynne, who I wanted to like, but she made some really stupid decisions (except $14 min wage, thank u Wynne). She was a Liberal party leader. And, you know, I was not okay with a PC government in Ontario, especially one run by Doug Ford (brother of notorious Rob Ford). And he’s done some shit I don’t like at all, BUT! I can comfortably say that I respect Doug Ford because of his decision making during the Covid Pandemic. While it was slow and could have been handled better, do I think another leader would have done better? Not really. But at the same time, there was no downplaying, and despite his emphasis on business in his platform, he surprised me with his re-opening policies and how slowly they were taken. (except the schools, because that was fuckin stupid tbh but I’m not going to keep going on about that.). Generally speaking, here when you’re mad about a politician, it’s for non-heinous, smaller bad decision making, rather than taking away Trans rights, for example. (An Aside -- here in Ontario, trans people who are clinically diagnosed with dysphoria and referred for surgery by a professional have their surgeries covered by OHIP (provincial health plan), and do not have to pay out of pocket, so that’s nice).
(Disclaimer: this opinion is from a white person’s prespective, a white person who votes in rural Ontario, who’s friends and family are quite equally as skeptical and logical toward politics and politicians. My flippancy could very well  be because of my white priviledge and I encourage any poc Canadian followers to respond with their opinions so I can rb here. I just know majority of immigrant Canadians vote Liberal since like the 70s).
Largely our Conservative party is much more concerned with fiscal issues than anything else (though there are some outliers, like Andrew Scheer who was notoriously anti-lgbt and abortion, but from what I could see it was kept out of his politics?? I need to look into it more, but ultimately he was taken out as the PC leader I think largely because of the country’s opinions on this) but a good portion of their supporters can be racist, and non-supportive of lgbt people, anti-abortion, etc. Ultimately, our conservatives, when in power recently, have never tried to reverse LGBT rights, though they toe the line of reproductive rights, despite not actively re-opening the debate. As well, Ontario, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, as well as Vancouver, Edmonton and Calgary have enacted bans on conversion therapy. A bill has also been tabled that will federally ban conversion therapy, and it’s not something that the conservatives are really fighting against. For the most part, they leave LGBT people alone rather than actively passing laws to harm them. I can personally say, I’ve never felt fear for my life, or my rights when we’ve had a majority PC government.
As an immigrant, compared to the US, you are more likely to be taken in to our country, and it is much easier to get work. It’s also easier to become a permanent resident (here’s a list of personal stories from answers on Quora about Canada vs US immigration).
As well, the Canadian government adopted the idea of Canada as a multicultural nation back in the 1970s. We’re not a melting pot like the US. And this can be a big draw for people looking to immigrate, because it emphasizes individuality and the positives of what different cultures can bring to a country. (Though this can be contested and quite fairly at that).
I personally know a good amount of people who have immigrated to Canada, from a variety of different backgrounds, who love it here, and have had very little issue in their lives. Not none, obviously for the POC, because racism still happens here, but they love being here, and ultimately they feel safe and like they belong. They have found community here. But this is just my personal experience, Heres’s a couple articles from and about Canadian immigrants:
Immigrants talk about when they 'started to feel Canadian' - Ottawa Citizen, 2018 As an immigrant, I know how it feels to be 'lonely and isolated' in my new country - CBC Saskatchewan, 2019    What It Takes: An immigrant’s journey from Zimbabwe to Canada - Global News, 2019
This isn’t to say that people come here and they’re always going to love it. There’s a lot of people who leave, either to go back to their home country, or to go to another country (like the US). Even though it’s easier than in the US, it can still be hard to get a job here in the field you want, things are kind of really expensive compared to the US, the US has better higher level education, they have better paying jobs, etc.
And again, this is the perspective of a white person from a smaller city in Ontario. I know Toronto, even though half of it’s population are immigrants, has a lot of issues with it’s police and brutality and anti-black and brown racism. Ultimately, you will not completely escape racism, individual or systemic, in this country. It’s an unfortunate fact that we can all fight to change in the future.
But in a small town. It’s a community. As someone from a rural area, I know that in my experience, there has never been a point where I have seen anyone from my small communities who have been, at the least, outwardly racist toward a POC. I personally have never seen or heard of a person being confronted or abused or called names because of the colour of their skin or cultural background. (here is an article written by my brother’s friend and former band mate, who is a black man that was adopted as a child, about his experiences in small town Canada, and his perspective on the BLM movement and the response of his white friends).
Anyway, I hope this sort of got my point across. Canada’s a complicated nation, like most. I didn’t touch on the base level, ‘why is canada a good place to immigrate’ points or anything, but I figure you would look that up before making such a big choice. And I’ve already spent 4 hours trying to write something coherent and somewhat researched to say...
Again, I encourage anyone to rb with their opinion or with anything I may have missed. Or send an ask or whatever.

Amazing music photographers around the world
We’re currently facing a world crisis unlike we have seen in a generation. Due to shutdowns of pretty much all normal life, the music industry has completely shutdown touring. Festivals and tours all over the world have been cancelled, and the loss of income to all of those connected to that industry will be devastating.
This is my very small attempt at trying to help out some of my favourite photographers, nearly all of whom are affected by these shutdowns. I’ve tried my best to link to all their print stores, instagram and websites, but if there are direct ways you want to help them, please reach out. Give them a follow. Share their posts. Tell them how amazing they are. Spirits are low right now, and boosting someone’s spirits is one of the best things we can do to get through this.
We’re all in this together. I hope you discover your new favourite photographer.

Bethan Miller // Cardiff, UK
Bethan Miller is a Cardiff based photographer who works within music, event and wedding photography. I’ve followed Bethan’s work for years, and seeing her come as far as she has, and being a full-time freelancer is incredible. Brandynnleigh // Calgary, AB
One of THE most creative photographers out there, I love the concepts and essence of her work; there’s a story within every photo and there’s a vintage feel to them that works perfectly. Brandynnleigh is based in Calgary and shoots live music as well as portraits, conceptual projects and landscapes.

Lindsey Blane // Vancouver, BC
Ok, I’m biased, because Lindsey is one of my closest friends but also a ridiculously talented human, a bit of a workaholic and someone who gives every project 110%. When we met, we were both working at a camera store (in different locations) and she stalked me on Instagram and messaged me on Christmas Day 2016, and within weeks she was sleeping on my sofa a couple times a month, so she could come over to Vancouver from Victoria and shoot some shows/build her relationships with artists. It’s paid off and seeing her work with some of the biggest artists in Canada is mindblowing.

Shayla Lee // Edmonton, AB
A multi-talented incredible human, Shayla has continued to develop her own unique style and approach to her work, particular with electronic and EDM acts. We were introduced by Lindsey Blane (she threw us all in a car and took us to Bumbershoot) and have been great friends since. Shayla is also a writer and runs her own blog, Femme Riot. She attends more festivals than I knew existed and creates weird and wonderful photos/collages.

One of the most humble, kind humans I’ve had the pleasure of calling my friend. Having road-tripped down to Seattle for Warped Tour and Bumbershoot, Tim is always so much fun to be around, and you can always lean on him for advice. An amazing photographer with a big heart, you’ll see him catching no sleep and shooting 5 gigs in one night.

My favourite Kiwi, and potentially one of the funniest people I know, Kelli has come a long way since she started taking photos on her phone at concerts. Her portrait work is always STUNNING and I’m jealous of how she achieves those warm dreamy tones.

WeaPo have had a rough year
Yes, they’ve been hermits on social media for a while. But they deserve it. They had an extremely rough 2018, physically and emotionally.
Tumblr media
Details below the cut
1. They came into 2018 recovering from injuries. I don’t even know how Kaitlyn physically skated at IDF with a displaced rib. There’s a bunch of layback positions in their free dance that would have been excruciating with an injury like that
2. Then we have nationals, which was a rollercoaster in itself. Falling on twizzles and ending up 4th after the SD, when you are supposed to be challenging for the podium at the Olympics would have been devastating mentally. But they came back with an amazing free dance and almost ended up with the silver.
3. Next we have the Olympics, which we now know more about how they (at least Kaitlyn) felt. Not being included in the team event, when they’ve contributed so much to Canadian Ice Dance over the last 4 years was devastating for them. Whether they deserved to go is beyond the point. They represented Canada at every non-Olympic team event since 2013, including WTT 2013, which Kaitlyn did on a recently healed broken leg. They had a rough season, but have consistently produced a good free dance. Being told you weren’t going to be a part of something like that, and watching people who you’ve literally grown up with win a gold medal together was tough for them.
4. Then the individual event came. After dealing with the emotions of the team event, they placed 7th, with scores lower than what they’ve received previously. And they skated clean. There’s that feeling of hopelessness that comes when no matter what you try, you don’t succeed. That feeling sucks. I’ve been there.
5. WeaPo decided to continue on to worlds. They have mentioned on multiple occasions that they were physically and mentally exhausted at this point. They felt that they couldn’t do it. There was doubt. But they decided to go ahead...because “Whatever it takes”
6. Then we get to worlds, a high point in their season, as they take bronze. They get criticized for this too, because they edged Cappellini and Lanotte to take this medal. C/L were retiring after this event, were older than WeaPo, and skating in their hometown. Fuck it, they even trained at the arena where Worlds was held.  Part of you would feel bad for the Italians.
7. We’ve only reached April at his point and WeaPo are probably exhausted. They have a little downtime to themselves before SOI. They take a trip to Northern Canada, and go dogsledding. They have an epiphany and realized why they love skating.
8. Next comes SOI, where like always, where they’re touring with the gold medal team. That’s probably rubbing salt on a half-healed wound but they continue their humble ways anyway.
9. Somewhere around this time, they decided they still want to compete, at least another season. But they presented with an opportunity to join TTYCT. They initially say no, because they want to compete. The initial cast is announced. After SOI, they realized the group of skaters are special, and they want to join them. They decide to balance training and touring, which sound terrifyingly exhausting.
10. They go to Kazakhstan and hear Denis Ten skate to SOS d'un terrien en détresse. This is it...this is their Free Dance music for the season. They go to Michigan to get it choreographed.
11. Less than a week later, their rollercoaster 2018 hits rock fucking bottom, when their close friend Denis Ten is murdered in Kazakhstan, over god damn car mirrors. They take this hard. When you are in your 20s, you don’t expect friends to die. You think you have a lifetime ahead with them. But then you suddenly don’t.
12. To make things worse, they have a free dance created to music that they got from Denis. They were about to thank him for the idea. They decided to continue with this free dance, but in dedication to him. Day in, day out, they train a free dance that directly reminds them of a lost friend. We can only imagine how challenging that is emotionally. There are going to be good days, and there are going to be bad days.
13. They make their season debut at ACI. It goes well, the judges respond well to both programs, and we all cry over their free dance. They literally go straight from Oakville to Montreal for TTYCT rehearsals. Begin WeaPo are nomads.
14. They travel across the country on a bus for TTYCT. They balance training for the rest of the season with performing, training at whatever ice rinks they can find in both the U.S. and Canada. They train at West Edmonton Mall, Minnesota, take a trip to Michigan in between, whatever they can. TTYCT seems tiring enough, but they add training on to it.
15. The POV podcast comes out in the middle of TTYCT. Speaking out about emotions and mental states is taboo in the world of sports–nobody does that. But Kaitlyn does. She is 100% honest and open about how she felt about the team event. But she blames no one but herself for that. Kaitlyn keeps her humility despite the disappointment. Nevertheless, cue the hate once more.
16. They finish TTYCT, and go back to training for a bit. Keep in mind they are still training this free dance dedicated to their lost friend. Emotional rollercoaster by itself. They’ve also got this larger fan base that they aren’t used to. More people are watching what they do.
17. The small “break” ends and they go to Japan for XOI. If they aren’t tired by now, they aren’t human.
18. They come back to the states and continue training for the rest of the season. On top of the emotional rollercoaster that is training their free dance, they’re probably dealing with nerves and pressure of maintaining their world medalist status. Add the emotions of confusion and doubt about their future. They’re almost 30 and 32. There isn’t much time left in a competitive career at that age, traditionally. But this is what they’ve been doing since 17 and 19. They don’t know anything else.
So yes, WeaPo have been hermits. They’re probably exhausted. This probably isn’t even a complete list of what happened in 2018 for them. They are excited and anxious and nervous for 2019. It’s totally normal, considering how fucking up and down 2018 was for them. I just hope they have a great 2019 and come out of the year happy and healthy. Because it’s what they deserve. It’s what everyone deserves

The Red Tour Masterpost
Part Two: Surprise Songs
Tumblr media
Welcome to the Red Tour!
We have now reached part two: the surprise songs! The Red Tour marked the first time Taylor decided to dive into her own back catalogue to maintain the element of surprise on the B-stage. As a result, during most Red Tour shows, she brought out a random song that was not included in the regular setlist by popular demand. These songs ranged from older hit singles to never-before-performed deep cuts from her debut studio album. At some shows, she would cut her setlist short by playing one of the songs that she would usually perform on the main stage acoustically. Additionally, certain songs were performed more than once, but I usually only include a single video in these cases and list the shows. Enjoy :)

Reworked.
Perfect Cities A Second Chance
Edward liked going to the airport. He liked looking at the different people arriving from every corner of the world being reunited with loved ones. Excited children jumped onto a parent’s arms after a short absence, lovers reunited with a short but meaningful kiss, families who had immigrated reunited in a tight embrace and friends who hadn’t seen each other in years running to one another and hugging tightly. It was the human condition at its best and Edward always felt serene watching these tender reunions.
Edward wasn’t sure if the same would happen when his friend arrived.
Even though it had been years since he had stopped seeing Étienne, it was hard for him to deny that he no longer felt anything for the other man. Étienne had been kind to him and even if Edward hadn’t always known where he stood in Étienne’s eyes, Edward had genuinely enjoyed the time they had spent together.
Nearly two decades were hard to ignore, but Edward had moved on. He was happy with Calvin and liked where he was with his life now. The only recurring problem was that he missed hanging out with Étienne.
It had taken a while for them to speak to one another again; mostly his fault, partially Étienne’s doing, but they had reconnected – sort of and had started talking again – kind of. Étienne’s big birthday had more or less pushed towards some unknown path of friendship and they were dealing with whatever that was supposed to be. It wasn’t yet as easy going and smooth as it had once been, but Edward hoped that this visit would help push things in that direction.
In the twenty or so years they had been together, Étienne had only visited him a few times. Montréal had been escapism for Edward and even though his friend had suggested and insisted on visiting repeatedly, Edward had refused often enough.  His own city had been a reminder of his past life and times he would have preferred forgetting. For a long while, it had reminded him of still being in the closet, and the oppression of people like him. That and he was always convinced that Étienne would be bored to tears in Edmonton and it was the last thing he wanted. Therefore, he had run to Montréal more times than he could recall, fleeing as far away as possible from everything.
Now things were different. Now Edward had started a new chapter of his life and he had moved on. He was part of the community, he worked hard, a boyfriend he loved who loved him back and he was ready to welcome Étienne into his home for the first time in years.
Every other time they had seen each other after the start of their fragile friendship, it had been through meetings, few and far between – work related things that only lead to quick conversation and maybe a quicker lunch.  However, now that Edward felt he was ready, he was willing to try it. (He didn’t have much of a choice – Étienne was in town for work, he had brought it up, Edward had offered. It would be rude to go back on it now.)
Now, all that was missing was for Étienne to arrive.
 --
“Hey, thanks for picking me up. You didn’t have to.” Étienne said slinging his bag higher on his shoulder.
“Don’t mention it, really. I would have hated for you to get lost. There have been a lot of changes since you were last here.”
When Étienne had walked out of the arrivals gate, Edward had nervously bounced on the balls of his feet, waiting. He was torn between giving an energetic wave and trying to look cool and casual.  However, when Étienne spotted him, he broke into a quick jog towards him.
He had come to an abrupt halt in front of him and they had stared at one another for a moment, exchanging nervous smiles, before Étienne launched himself into Edward’s waiting arms. (And that, at least, felt normal.)
“I’m not that incompetent.” Étienne laughed as they stepped out of the airport.
“I know, but this way I could show you around a bit and we get to spend some more time together.” If Edward’s cheeks coloured, Étienne either didn’t notice or didn’t comment and Edward thanked him for it.
The ride to Edward’s was thankfully not that long and they used the time to catch up on trivialities. Étienne commented on the fact that his bus to the airport was also the 747 and Edward filed it under another interesting similarity their cities had.
“Well, here we are, home sweet home.” Edward announced once he had parked the truck. Étienne stepped out of the vehicle and took a moment to take in the place and the obvious changes it had gone through over the past few years, another hint that Edward had changed.
He followed Edward inside and whistled low, even more surprised with the inside. There seemed to be more space than two people could ever want, or need, and everything screamed “new” and “great” and “eco-friendly” and “amazing”.
“Wow, you weren’t kidding when you said you were really redoing the place.”
“I figured the extra space would be nice.” Edward shrugged. “Here I’ll give you a tour and show you where you can leave your things. How much stuff did you actually bring?” He asked eyeing Étienne’s rather large suitcase.
“Ah, well you know, had to come prepared.” He responded, elusive as he could sometimes be.
“You know, you didn’t have to bring your Habs shrine with you, right?”
“Funny, and yes I am aware.  I didn’t bring it with me. Now, show me where I can leave this stuff; it’s heavy.” He said with a roll of his eyes.
Edward shook his head and showed Étienne to the guest room, his friend laughing behind him.
 “So, where’s lover boy?”
“Lover boy, who has a name, had business this weekend. He won’t be here.” Edward said carefully.  He studied Étienne’s face for a moment, but saw nothing unusual transpire in those green eyes. If anything, the other man shrugged and nodded. If it so conveniently happened that Calvin had left a few days prior to go back to Calgary, Edward didn’t mention it. If he had maybe encouraged Calvin to go home for a few days, he also kept that to himself. This was the first time they were spending time together alone and Edward didn’t want to have to deal with even more mixed emotions and allegiances.
 “How convenient.”
“I’m not sure what you mean by that but yes, it will be convenient. I doubt Calvin wants to hear us go on and on about the good old days.”
Étienne scoffed. “That’s his problem. They were brilliant days.” They both exchanged a look and then started laughing. Edward had missed this – the easy banter, the back and forth and it was good to know that it was still there, that they could maybe go back to something that was normal instead of stilted. “So, what’s the plan for the afternoon?”
“I figured we could do lunch and then I can show you around. I know it’s not as impressive as Montreal, but...”
“Hey, none of that.  We’ve talked about this.”
Edward sighed and looked away. They had. Over a few dozen letters. They were supposed to be more open and honest and less self-deprecating. Or something. “You’re right, you’re right. But yeah, that’s the gist of it.”
“Sounds like a plan. I’m starved. Which reminds me; I brought you something.”
Edward quirked an eyebrow as Étienne rummaged through his bag and pulled out two different things, which made Edward’s eyes widen in pleasant surprise. “As you asked; fresh bagels and smoked salmon spread. Picked them up before going to the airport.”  Étienne laughed as his friend yanked them from his hands and tried to smell the bagels through their plastic bag.
“Ah! I’ve missed these! But really, you didn’t have to get them this morning. Last night would have been fine.”
“Eh, I wanted to make sure they were as fresh as possible. They were still warm when I bought them.”
Edward nodded and then headed towards the kitchen to put the spread in the refrigerator. Étienne followed him closely behind.
“So, what’s for lunch?” Étienne asked, poking around the kitchen, lifting lids to pots that were on the stove.
 “Your favourite; stew.”
Étienne actually gasped and a wide grin broke out on his face – he looked like an excited toddler and Edward shouldn’t have been so endeared. “God, I haven’t had that in ages. When do we eat?”
“Why don’t you wash up and I’ll set the table?” Edward motioned to the kitchen table and Étienne eagerly nodded and headed for the washroom, while Edward went to his stove to plate the stew.
 --
The day had passed in a blur. After lunch, Edward had taken Étienne for a tour of the city, showing him the new things that hadn’t been there, or had changed, since his last visit. Edward had worried that they would run out of things to do, or that Étienne would find it boring, but it had turned out to be quite pleasant.
Étienne had been his usual vivacious self, commenting on this thing or that. Taking a photo of an interesting building, or wall that caught his attention. It seemed he had thoroughly enjoyed his visit and for that, Edward was glad. They had finally ended their day with a nice walk through the River Valley and had stopped at some point to sit and chat. Edward feared their conversation would get stilted and loaded, but it had been remarkably easy. He supposed he had letters and chats and texts to thank for that. It was nice to talk about current events in their lives and not just the past.
From there, they had walked back to the bus stop and had returned to Edward’s place. They had decided to take it easy and after a quiet dinner, they would watch a movie.
“Hey, d’you mind if I take a shower before we start the film?”
“Nah, go ahead. I’ll have a smoke outside.” Étienne patted his breast pocket where his pack of cigarettes was and Edward nodded, heading off. Étienne waited a moment, making sure Edward was well into the washroom, and then went to the guestroom to retrieve his lighter.
The lighter and the smoking were really a ruse. Instead, Étienne opened his suitcase and pulled out a rolled up canvas, multiple pieces of wood, a stapler, a small box of nails, carpenter’s glue, and a small nail gun. He waited while he heard the water run and then tiptoed outside to the back porch.
With the help of the patio light, Étienne started assembling the wooden stretcher to the three paintings he had brought along. He moved quickly and effortlessly, having done this many times before. It was second nature to him and soothed his manic energy that had been itching to get out.
Building the stretchers for his paintings required precise work that he liked doing. He had to clear his mind of everything and focus on the task. It was breathing the final breath of life into his creation and when he was finished; he would have before him his new pieces. From the conception of the idea, to the sketches and finally the painting, all of that would come alive once the canvas was stretched across the wooden frame he himself had built.
As Étienne applied glue and then gunned the nails in, he couldn’t help but reflect on his choice of painting he had brought his friend. The choice had been deliberate and planned, but it had been difficult.
Despite what the triptych looked like now, it hadn’t always been this way.
Years ago, almost what felt like a lifetime now, Étienne had decided to make a painting for Edward. His friend had often teased him about it, saying that he would like a piece for his living room, in case Étienne would ever turn famous and Étienne had turned him down every time. He had been flattered, sure, but painting was a pastime – something he did for fun and to unwind. His pieces were experimental at best and he didn’t believe they were worthy of being put on someone’s wall. They were raw, allowed him to express emotions he kept locked away and he was afraid Edward would read things in his painting that were meant to be “private.”
But Edward’s words had stayed in his mind and over the years, he found himself sometimes starting a new piece, using the colours to express the feelings he was never able to articulate. When he would realise what he was doing, he stopped and then painted over what he had done.
However, with the years, Étienne had slowly come to terms with his feelings. He had decided that as a gesture, he would offer Edward a painting, and hopefully, his friend would understand the meaning hidden behind every stroke.
The idea of the triptych had been symbolic and meaningful to him.
Their relationship, if it could be called that, had spanned over two decades and as they neared the start of the third, Étienne felt it was appropriate.
Instead of planning his painting, he decided to trust his heart and let his feelings dictate his creation. It had been a new experience for him and as much as it had been foreign territory, it hadn’t been all that bad.
However, unsure of where he was going with this and a little hesitant, his work had advanced slowly. Often, he would find himself frustrated and he would start over yet again.
His confusion and uncertainness came through the painting and that only lead to anger, which was far from what he was trying to achieve. Finally, when all had seemed lost, Étienne had a breakthrough and he had found the direction for his creation.
Étienne had set his mind on offering the triptych for Edward’s birthday, months away, but then, just like with everything that had ever gone right in his life, it suddenly stopped.
Edward slowly started distancing himself, tired of not knowing where he stood in Étienne’s mind. It had been fun and before it was okay, but Edward wanted something else and he no longer was that desperate man Étienne had met in 1980.
Étienne realised that it was too late, too soon, and that even if he would have told his friend how he truly felt, Edward’s mind was made. It was better this way. No one would know about the feelings he had developed and they could part ways without anyone knowingly being hurt.
Étienne had abandoned the paintings, burying them in the back of his closet amongst the sketchbooks he knew were filled with half-finished drawings he had done of Edward. He hid them away from his view – from his mind – along with the feelings he had never wanted and all the mementos that reminded him of the other man.
For years, the paintings remained incomplete, until they had reconnected at that meeting, late into 2016. It had been a few weeks after that that Étienne had unearthed the paintings from his closet and only after his birthday did he consider doing something with them. He had left them in a corner of his living room, letting them gather dust, until finally, he had decided to do something about them when he knew he’d be going to Edmonton again. It felt – symbolic.
Some two weeks or so ago, on an impulse, after having spent too many sleepless nights mulling over his feelings, Étienne had armed himself with a bottle of gin and had opened up the boxes he had equally dug out from his closet. Letters, pictures, sketches, and paintings made old feelings resurface tenfold and unhealed wounds bleed afresh. It was as if every ghost from his past had come to say hello at once and he realised all it was he had lost.
He had left the boxes there and had returned to bed, promising himself he would burn them all the following day.
Naturally, the following night, the boxes still remained intact and this time, he told himself he was ready, now that he knew what he was facing. He dared himself to look through the full content of the boxes, no matter how painful it was, and only then did he take the three incomplete paintings. He had had half a mind to burn them down and to get rid of them once and for all, but at the last moment, he had a change of heart.
Instead, with the last half of the bottle of gin by his side, he stared at the paintings for a few hours, trying to make sense of what it was he was feeling and then took out his material.
In a daze, he painted over the original paintings without stopping. He covered the fledging of his feelings and hid them under new layers of paint. He dared not stop and took no time to reflect on his creation. There was no time and Étienne knew that the moment he stopped, he would see something he did not want to admit to, and he would start over.
It was four days later when he emerged, with the three complete paintings. He let them dry, while he crashed for the day and when he next looked at them with a sober gaze, he was shocked to see the outcome of his frenzy.
There, displayed on the once white canvas, a mesh of colours in bold strokes depicted clearly his deepest pleas not to be left aside. His feelings lay bare, left to be interpreted by whoever looked at the painting. It was the best he could do and before he could further reflect, he un-mounted them from the stretcher and put everything in his suitcase.
 --
He still wondered though why it was he had called up Edward. They barely hung out anymore. Edward had moved on from him, in every sense of the word. Étienne wanted to believe that he had also moved on, but there were still times when he sought a man that no longer was part of his life.
However, deep down, in the recess of his heart, Étienne still longed for the warmth Edward had brought him. For one of the rarest of times in his long life, Étienne had felt comfortable and at peace, when he had been with him. He had been able to let his barriers down and had slowly learnt to be himself around Edward. He had felt a connection with Edward and had thought for sure that his lover had felt it as well and Étienne had relied on it when his words failed him.
  --
Étienne stepped back from his triptych and observed his handy work. The canvas mounted back on the stretcher, bathed in the yellow light of the patio, the paintings took on a new look. He quickly packed his tools and walked back inside; hoping Edward was still in the shower. It was best if he didn’t look for too long, before he second guessed himself and threw everything out.
He put his material back in his suitcase and then wrapped the three paintings in the paper he had brought for that exact purpose. Once he had tied everything up, he set the gift on the coffee table and then sat back on the couch, pretending nothing had ever happened.
Moments later, Edward joined him, clad in his pyjamas.
“What’s this?” He asked, almost immediately after he noticed the parcel on the table.
“House warming gift.” Étienne replied is his most even voice.
“You really didn’t have to...” Edward hesitated for a moment, but when Étienne nodded towards the gift, he took it and sat down to unwrap it.
“How did you even get this to fit in your suitcase?”
“Ah, I have my ways.” Étienne replied, vague. Edward rolled his eyes at his friend’s comment, returning his attention to the gift.
He slowly undid the rope that held the thick, creamy coloured paper and then folded back the top flap to reveal the first of the three pieces.
He stilled and they were both quiet for a very long second.
“You painted...” Edward’s voice broke through the silence, a mere little whisper that was heavy with emotion.
 “It’s a triptych.”
“You made me a painting – paintings.” Edward talked over him, taking the first painting out and putting it down on the coffee table, gentle, afraid it would break.
“I didn’t really know what to get you, or how you had decorated your place, so I figured a painting would be nice.” Étienne avoided looking at his friend and instead focused on the rug under the table, not really paying attention to what Edward was saying, afraid of rejection. It was a pretty nice rug – suited the place, really.
“You didn’t have to get me anything – let alone make three paintings.” Edward wasn’t sure what it was he felt. He was – overwhelmed, for starters, and the painting were gorgeous, to say the least. But Edward knew how cagey Étienne was with his paintings. He knew he never shared them with anyone. Edward remembered countless nights sitting in Étienne’s living room, while he painted – he remembered how long it had taken for his friend to feel at ease to even do that around him. This was big and Edward didn’t want to ruin the moment or the trust Étienne was placing in his open hands.
“If you don’t like them just humour me and get rid of them after I leave. Or just put them up when I visit, like in that movie.” He joked weakly.
“Étienne, how did you get these paintings here? Your suitcase is too narrow.” Even now, even after everything they had been through, he still couldn’t form the right words to what he really wanted to say.
“I mounted them earlier.” He finally admitted, when he couldn’t think of a lie.
Edward blinked, staring at his friend. Sure, he didn’t mean... “You... I don’t understand.”
 “I made the stretchers.”
“How?!” Of course. Of course Étienne would.
 “With wood.”
Edward gave Étienne a pointed look and gaped at him. He would never understand this man and his beautiful mind. “You. You made the stretchers?” Edward asked, disbelief written all over his face. Why anyone, let alone Étienne, would go through all that trouble was beyond him.
 Étienne shrugged. “You seem surprised.”
“I mean... I knew you painted. I just. I didn’t know you apparently made everything yourself or went through all that trouble.”
 “Surprise.”
“You never told me.” Edward added, quiet.
If Edward sounded a little hurt, Étienne didn’t seem to notice.
“I’m not a complete incompetent, Ed. Just because I can’t cook or make my own jam doesn’t mean I’m useless. I guess we both had our own secrets.” He snapped, a little sensitive and Edward recognised it for what it was – Étienne was trying to protect his feelings by deflecting and lashing out. He had to tread carefully.
“I never thought you were an incompetent, Étienne...” Edward added. Never in the many years they had known each other had he ever thought that. He knew the other man was right. There had been many things he had kept from Étienne and he suspected the same was true about his friend. But now was not the time for that. What was in the past was in the past. They needed to move on from that.
Wordlessly, he set the three paintings side by side to see what they revealed.
Étienne held his breath, still afraid that the paintings would reveal things to Edward that his friend didn’t want to know. He wanted to take them away and run, but it was too late now. He should have never brought the paintings. He should have burned them as planned or waited some more before handing them over for Edward to dissect.
Minutes ticked by and he could tell that Edward was searching for the right thing to say.
“Étienne...” Edward’s voice was barely above a whisper, but it sent Étienne’s heart racing. He turned and looked at the one person he couldn’t seem to forget and braced himself for whatever it was that would happen next.
 “You stupid, stupid man.”
It happened before either of them even realised it. One moment they had been sitting side by side, the next they were clutching at each other, embracing tightly. Étienne gasped and furrowed his face in Edward’s shoulder; breathing in the familiar scent of him he had craved and missed. His body tensed and then relaxed, feeling the warmth Edward had always brought him, the ghost of his breath on his neck a familiar sensation.
It was two decades of repressed feelings and two more of estrangement crashing against one another to release in a mixture of friendship and longing. It was coming home, in a sense, to a familiar face and feeling that was thought forgotten. Words could never fully explain what it was that transgressed between them in that moment, but it was the closure of one chapter and the start of another. It was affirmation that he mattered – that they mattered to each other and that everything would work out – somehow.
It soothed the soul and patched up old wounds that had never fully healed. It was Edward letting Étienne know that he still cared. It was Étienne reaching out and asking Edward not to cast him out of his life. It, hopefully, would make way for better things to come and would open up the way for a stronger friendship.

Just wanted to say I am the luckiest Swiftie ever. I have have 4 phenomenonal Taylor Swift experiences and I'm so happy she's happy.
Here is part 1.
Speak Now tour in Edmonton we road tripped 3.5 hours because the tour wasn't coming to Calgary. We dressed up in neon shirts my friends and I decorated. Glow sticks covering our arms and necks. Giant flashing poster. Got noticed during the opening act because my friends and I were up dancing like crazy having fun while other people sitting down on phones etc. We thought security was telling us to sit down because people around us were being rude saying SIT DOWN. Security sort of person came in the isle and said "Do you guys want to go to the pit?" And normally someone saying to 3 young girls do you want to go to the pit would be scary but all of us screamed YES! and freaked out. They gave us wristbands for the pit and said Taylor loves crazy fans and wants you in the pit so you have to go wild and hype everyone up around you. We were freaking out so hard and were standing in the pit the whole concert. During Taylor singing Speak Now she walked through the pit and we touched her! (YouTube video evidence of this 😂) Taylor's guitarist Paul flung a guitar pick and I got it which I was so excited about because I play 12 string guitar. We were enchanted and memorised the entire show. Chills and amazement.
