Anya's Charisma

Has anyone noticed how charismatic Anya tends to be? Yeah, she's not that smart, so sometimes she doesn't read a situation very well. Of course she seems to be manipulating the course of the entire story!

Twilight needs a child and he just happens to run into Anya. In his head he mentions he needs a 6 year old, so Anya says she's six. Comments she's short, she makes herself taller. the orphanage owner mentioned how Anya is smart so she knows he wants someone smart, copying the answers to a crossword from his mind to make him think she is. She knew all the points to sell herself and she acted on them.

Of course he nearly changes his mind, Anya gets him to follow through by begging, pleading and not abandoning him. This makes him decide not to abandon her. She seems to be emotionally persuasive.

When Yor comes into the picture, the reason they get Yor involved at all is because Anya mentions how much they need a mother so bad, which lets Yor know Loid is single. She seems to be the puzzle piece making everything fall into place.

When dealing with Damien, she decides to smile it off, which immediately makes Becky like her for being mature. She later stands up to Damien's threats and sincerely apologizes for punching him later after that. All of this makes Damien like her; this just displays her natural charm that endears people to her.

When dealing with Fiona, she makes it clear how happy she is with how things are, not wanting things to change. This makes Yor more determined to keep her spot.

Later on the cruise, she's able to keep Yor's cover and direct people's attention without blowing her own. She's able to persuade the situation to how she likes it.

With the Red Circus arc, she's able to think on the fly to keep everyone on the danger, standing her ground. Saying the right things that need to be said in the situation.

Overall, Anya is actually really smart in a social and emotional sense, able to lie, intimidate and persuade others easily. She may have low intelligence, and average wisdom, but dang is her Charisma score high.

Ok back on track for my monthly wrap ups! Here's my stats for August:

I read 6 books for a total of 1,114 pages, and an average of 36 pages per day.

20th Century Ghosts was a huge let-down for me. I read it because I'm slightly obsessed with the Black Phone movie, but I sort of wish I'd left this collection alone. I'm not sure if my issue is with Joe Hill's older work or the horror genre. Alas.

Thankfully, I was wholly charmed by Becky Chamber's latest installment in the Monk and Robot series. I'm also still obsessed with Dark Crystal lore though I might be done with my journey in terms of buying more books or comics. We'll see...

RESULTS on Opinions on TwiYor and DamiAnya

Hi! First of all, thank you so much for the 250 responses on my “Opinions on TwiYor and DamiAnya” survey conducted from 27 - 30 Aug 2022. The survey was shared on Twitter and Tumblr (to my knowledge). I was interested to see the demographics of TwiYor mains and DamiAnya mains considering they’re the two “main” ships of Spy x Family.

I asked every respondent to acknowledge they were ship positive or ship neutral to both ships so there won’t be ship bashing. This is definitely not meant to pit two ships against each other; I’m just curious about the fandom demographics.

Additionally, as a DamiAnya centric account, the results are likely skewed towards DamiAnya. This is not representative of the (English-speaking) fandom.

So, here we go! (Numbers corrected to 1 decimal point)

59.2% (148) of respondents preferred DamiAnya, while 40.8% (102) of respondents preferred TwiYor. I was a little surprised by how DamiAnya mains consist of almost 60% of respondents, even taking in account the survey is skewed in their direction.

More than 75% of respondents are adults (18 or above), with the most common age range being 20-25, followed by 25-30. Not surprising considering the two leads of SxF are also around that age.

8.8% (22) of respondents are 13-15, 14.4% (36) are 16-17, 15.6% (39) are 18-19, 36.4% (91) are 20-25, 19.6% (49) are 25-30, and 5.2% (13) are 30-40. No one chose 40+. Spy x Family is a big hit with adults.

And now the exciting part that I conducted this survey for! How age might correlate with your choice!

(Percentages are of how many people chose that ship in that age range over the total number of respondents in said age range)

DamiAnya:

13-15: 19 (86.4%)

16-17: 30 (83.3%)

18-19: 25 (64.1%)

20-25: 52 (57.1%)

25-30: 19 (38.8%)

30-40: 3 (23.1%)

For DamiAnya mains, respondents aged 20-25 take up 35.1%, 16-17 take up 20.3%, 18-19 take up 16.9%, 13-15 and 25-30 take up 12.8% each, 30-40 take up 2%. Interesting how there’s a dip for the 18-19 age range when it’s sandwiched between the 16-17 and 20-25 age range.

TwiYor:

13-15: 3 (13.6%)

16-17: 6 (16.7%)

18-19: 14 (35.9%)

20-25: 39 (42.9%)

25-30: 30 (61.2%)

30-40: 10 (76.1%)

For TwiYor mains, respondents aged 20-25 take up 38.2%, 25-30 take up 29.4%, 18-19 take up 13.7%, 30-40 take up 9.8%, 16-17 take up 5.9%, 13-15 take up 2.9%. Unlike DamiAnya mains, the pattern shown here is consistent, with numbers rapidly rising and peaking at the 20-25 age range, then slowly falling.

It looks like what a lot of people have stated is correct- the younger fans prefer DamiAnya, the older fans prefer TwiYor. It’s neat to see the percentage go down / go up according to age.

Starting from the 25-30 age group, TwiYor is more favoured, which aligns with the ages of the two characters. Conversely, DamiAnya (which is often aged up to teen years) is more popular with the teen group.

For gender, 75.6% answered female, 6% answered nonbinary, 5.6% answered male, 1.2% answered bigender, 1.2% answered agender, 0.8% answered pangender / genderfluid, one respondent answered demigirl, 8.8% preferred not to answer. (The stats on the pie chart are slightly inaccurate because two people put down “female” on the other option)

The next question is “When did you start reading / watching SxF OR When did you get into the fandom?”. Respondents could choose from “When there was only the SxF manga” “After the SxF trailers were posted but before the anime aired” “During the period in which the SxFanime aired its first 12 episodes” and “After the SxF anime aired its first 12 episodes”.

Overall, 46.4% (116) respondents answered “during the anime period”, 30.8% (77) answered “when there was only the manga”, 15.2% (38) answered “after trailers but before the anime”, 7.6% (19) answered “after the anime”. The anime more than doubled the existing fanbase from the manga.

To separate into ships again:

DamiAnya:

When there was only the manga: 43 (55.8%)

After the trailers but before the anime: 24 (63.2%)

During the anime period: 76 (65.5%)

After the anime: 5 (26.3%)

TwiYor:

When there was only the manga: 34 (44.2%)

After the trailers but before the anime: 14 (36.8%)

During the anime period: 40 (34.5%)

After the anime: 14 (73.7%)

The stats are fairly consistent until it comes to “after the anime”. I wonder what prompted it?

In the chapters between the end of the anime and this survey (end of June 2022 to end of August 2022), the manga covered: Anya + Henderson (Ch 64), Yor meets Damian’s mom (Ch 65-66), Anya + Damian, Yor + Shopkeeper, Loid + Fiona (Ch 67.1). If anything, we recently got more Anya + Damian canon content than TwiYor.

The next question asked “Is SxF your first fandom?”.

91.2% (228) answered no, 7.2% (18) answered “I do not consider myself as part of the SxF fandom”, and 1.6% (4) answered yes. If you’re new to fandoms, welcome and I hope you enjoy your time here!

Considering the vast majority answered no, it’s assumed the respondents are aware of fandom etiquette such as proper tagging. And you can click away if you see art / fic you don’t like.

The next question is “Would you call yourself a fan who creates fancontent for either or both of those ships?”.

55.2% (138) answered no, 44.8% (112) answered yes. It’s a pretty even division.

Out of the 112 creators, 58.9% (66) are DamiAnya mains, 41.1% 46 are TwiYor mains, which I suppose shows how small of a corner this survey touched? I don’t know how to count fanarts on various sites, but at the moment I’m writing this, there are 1303 TwiYor works and 698 DamiAnya works on Ao3. I’m a DamiAnya fic author and my circle consists of other DamiAnya fic authors, so again this survey is skewed in DamiAnya’s direction.

And finally, for the sites respondents use to browse for SxF content / fancontent.

206 (82.4%) answered Ao3, 202 (80.8%) answered Twitter, 169 (67.6%) answered Tumblr, 87 (24.8%) answered Instagram, 67 (26.8%) answered Pixiv, 25 (18%) answered Discord, 44 (17.6%) answered Reddit, 23 (9.2%) answered Wattpad, 20 (8%) answered FFN. A couple answered YouTube, Pinterest, Facebook, and Tiktok. Yup, Ao3 supremacy.

I also asked about nationality (optional question). Fom experience, DamiAnya seems to be popular in the Asian community (I’ve dug around in the Chinese fandom). Not everybody answered, but for those who did:

This is an incredibly long list but I’ll try to note down more significant findings. In the above list, I already put down the preferences of those who only had one reply.

DamiAnya:

15 out of 18 Filipinos preferred DamiAnya. 6 out of 9 Brazilians preferred DamiAnya. 4 out of 5 Peruvians preferred DamiAnya. An American / Chinese put down TwiYor, but everybody else who had Chinese in their replies put down DamiAnya (the Taiwanese chose TwiYor but the two from Hong Kong chose DamiAnya). The 2 Indians, 2 Hispanics, 2 Malaysians, 2 Vietnamese all chose DamiAnya. 2 out of 3 of the French put down DamiAnya.

TwiYor:

3 out of 4 Argentinians preferred TwiYor. 2 out of 3 of the British put down TwiYor. Everybody who had Canada in their replies put down TwiYor (3 Canadians, one raised in Canada).

Americans and Indonesians have a pretty equal split.

The sample size is small here so I would not generalise. The amount of DamiAnya mains who put down nationality is twice that of TwiYor mains. But the Filipino stat is interesting. Also from the very very small sample size, it appears that the Asians (Filipino, Indians, Malaysians, Vietnamese, Chinese, Hong Kong, etc) may lean towards DamiAnya. Or maybe not. There’s not enough information.

And finally for the reasons for choosing that ship! I’ll try to sum it up below.

DamiAnya:

Cute (a lot of people put down this)

The innocence

The potential of their ship / lots of potential dynamics / we don’t know what their future is

Nostalgia

More angst potential

Like to see TwiYor as platonic / semi-platonic / QPR / familiar so it’s not a romantic ship

They’re funny / chaotic

More canonical in the sense Damian has a canon crush, while for TwiYor it’s just hints and teases

Want to see them grow up and develop

TwiYor:

They’re adults (a lot of people put down this)

They are uncomfortable with shipping children (also a lot of people put down this)

Uncomfortable with some DamiAnya works (that touch on adult / “unsafe” topics)

Rare to have a healthy, respectful, wholesome ship between two adults

More stable / calm / tender

Slowburn

The same age as the characters / more relatable

Favourite character is Twilight / Yor

The characters are attractive / hot / sexy

The characters are mature

The characters are complex

Untouched potential

LOTS of respondents who chose TwiYor said they’re uncomfortable with shipping kids and adult ships appeal to them more, which is perfectly valid. That might be the biggest thing holding people back from shipping DamiAnya. And some DamiAnya mains said they enjoy the TwiYor dynamic but don’t see it as a romantic ship. Same for TwiYor mains who said they like platonic DamiAnya but won’t mind if they get together like twenty years later.

People named the tropes they liked for each ship, called each ship ���more interesting”, but from the answers, people have called TwiYor both “simple / vanilla” and “complex”, and DamiAnya both “basic” and “unique”. I suppose it’s down to personal preference.

My personal opinions below:

Why TwiYor might be “simple” is because they don’t have a lot of canonically romantic content, just teases / some blushes / ship fuel. (While Damian’s crush is unrequited, at least his crush is canonically confirmed.) So it’s a subtle slow burn. TwiYor is also complex because we don’t fully know both of their backstories and the facets of their characters. They each have their own motivations for starting a family, but they’re starting to enjoy the family for family’s sake. There are also many ways their dynamic could develop (domestic, fluff, angst, etc).

Why DamiAnya might be “basic” is that it’s a romance in a school setting. Young love is also extremely common in anime / manga, especially teenage love (for aged up DamiAnya). It also has a lot of tropes. But DamiAnya is “unique” because of the mindreader / Operation Strix setting, and it’s exactly the cocktail of tropes that brew so many different potential dynamics. There are many ways the two characters could grow up, and many ways their dynamic could change.

People have said TwiYor is more stable (may appeal to the older fans who prefer stability), and DamiAnya is more uncertain / turbulent (may appeal to the younger fans who want excitement).

- Myline awakened her sharingan for the first time at the age of 13 and only gets the Mangekyō at 20, after finding Itachi’s already lifeless body. - She is rarely seen using her sharingan, we can count how many times she has used it with our fingers. - Obito presumed that she would never have a sharingan because of her eyes being red instead of black like it is usual for the inactive sharingan but her red eyes are a genetic characteristic from the Yabuza clan and it happens naturally, masking the color of the inactive sharingan. - The Yabuza Clan have their own kekkei genkai, the Kageyogan (Something like eyes of the shadow realm), with the power of teleporting trough shadows, this kekkei genkai along with Myline’s speed gives her an advantage that her opponents should always have in mind.

-Itachi helps Myline with her hygiene as she has a hard time taking care of it, not only because she was never taught how to do it properly (she was born during an invasion that lasted for years) but also because she struggles with lack of motivation and executive dysfunction derived from her depression and possible quiet BPD. - She loves literature and you will probably always find her in a corner reading a good book whenever she is not working. - She went out of her way during a mission once, risking everything just to steal a few rare books from a very important library. - Myline is very respectful towards Itachi’s wish to protect and keep Konoha safe, so she started by invading Konoha in order to find her sister and lure her out of the village, however, she wasn’t expecting their fight to be of such a large destruction, she had clearly underestimated her rage and sister and once she realized they had destroyed part of the wall and the houses close to it she was suddenly consumed by guilt and intrusive voices in her head, losing focus and finally leading to her capture. - She has a chakra regulator tattoo on her left arm with the appearance of two tomoe and a small dot in the middle, it doesn’t give her infinite chakra, but gives her a good reserve of it and is also able to absorb chakra from nature when necessary, because of this, Myline can have a very high and lasting chakra levels, it is not unlimited though. - Myline has an extraordinary and totally unusual speed due do her high and regulated chakra levels, which was an extremely helpful skill against the Raikage. - After the end of the Kara organization and with Kashin Koji gone, she felt lost again, escaping from Konoha with the intention of getting back to Ame No Kuni, killing the current feudal lord and taking the leadership of the country, her goals were to rebuild her village and the whole country. - She got really angry at Naruto once she finally reached Ame No Kuni, as he had promised Nagato and Konan to help them but she was disgusted when she saw the whole country in ruins, left to rot. - She decided to make the country a shelter for renegades in honour to the friends she lost along the way. - While Myline recognizes that Itachi’s end was the best option for him, she can’t help but feel a deep hatred for Sasuke as she has a very hard time processing her feelings and emotions, she can’t do it properly. - Myline developed her own jutsu by mixing both of her chakra natures, fire and wind. Named Fenikkusukaze no Jutsu (something like wind phoenix), the jutsu consists of a large phoenix made of big flames that can be directed and increased by the wind element. - She was fruit of a betrayal, her mother betrayed her husband by having an affair with Yashiro who was one of the recruited to help Yami No Sato at the time.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) It’s been years since I’ve gone back to this and it really is one of the best superhero movies ever made, right? I hope the next one succeeds and it leads to more animated features. It just...you can do so much more. Sure the live-action superhero movies have a lot of animation but they’re bound by our physics and the uncanny valley and it’s just not the same.

Ted Lasso (Episode 3.01 to 3.03) Glad to be back. It’s been interesting seeing the online rise, then fall, then rise again of support for this show but honestly, who cares? Do you like watching it? Great. Do I like watching it? Absolutely. It’s a project that was planned from season 1 and it shows and I wish more media was approached in this way.

Spy x Family (Episode 1.08 to 1.25) Okay needed to shift my expectations with this one. I really thought we’d get more of Yor and her assassin life. She’s kinda just a background character to Loid and Anya and that feels like a missed opportunity.

The Great (Episode 2.09 to 2.10) Great cap to the season. Full arcs for characters, a satisfying resolution and yet still enough of a hook to get me excited for the third season. Just some gorgeous, funny, dramatic television. Big fan.

What Does Glass Onion Have to Do with US? by Vivian Strange Okay a lengthy one but worth it. A new perspective on Glass Onion, a refresher on why I really liked US, and a really great connection between the two. Also a really great breakdown of the murder mystery as a genre as well and why it’s having a resurgence. All around great stuff. VIDEO

Arabian Nights (Companion Library Edition) (Page 124 of 244) Thrifted this and for some reason never knew it was a collection of short stories? Which seems obvious now. Anyway I’m sooooo slow at really short story collections but they’ve been interesting to read. Something about the translation feels like a slog to actually read but the stories included are a lot of fun. 

Wonderland Revisited and the Games Alice Played There by Keith Sheppard (Complete) I’m super picky when it comes to adaptations of Carroll’s works. Many take Wonderland and make it dark, twisted, and mature (meh) but I find the more interesting take is one that continues with the same momentum. This one doesn’t quite work in capturing the spirit of the original books for me but there’s a lot of really great ideas in here.

Superman for all Seasons by Jeph Loeb & Tim Sale (Complete) Having loved their Batman books I picked this up and, being younger and dumber, didn’t like it at the time. Where was the action? Where were the villains? I was naive. Going back to this I really appreciate the study of Superman, the narrative through the supporting cast, and the struggles that can’t be resolved through punching. Man Loeb & Sale were a team.

Fantastic Four: Full Circle by Alex Ross (Complete) As an one-off story, this delivers everything I’d want out of an FF adventure: group banter, weird worlds, and lots of mumbo jumbo science. Plus I mean the artwork is truly humbling. I had to read it twice and I still only 80% understand it all but that’s not a complaint. Totally worth picking up if you have even a passing interest in the Fantastic Four.

Ultimate Spider-Man Volume 5 & 6 by by Brian Michael Bendis, Mark Bagley, and more  (Complete) Decided to pick up with my reread of the Ultimate Spider-Man series again and woof I forgot how much I didn’t like volume 5. The first half is an Ultimates story that I STILL find too wordy, and the movie tie-in of the second half never quite clicked. I dunno maybe there are too many losses and not enough wins for Parker in this one? Volume 6, however, is great. It has one of the most frustrating deaths in the series but it really explores the aftermath and impact. And introducing Johnny Storm and using him as the reason Spider-Man gets back into the hero stuff is really great. Spider-Man doesn’t need to solve all problems with punches and this book gets that.

Wild Planet by The B-52s (1980) After listening to a greatest hits album on repeat as a kid, I’m going back to the early stuff. Can’t get Private Idaho out of my head.

FREE I.H.: This Is Not the One You've Been Waiting For by Illuminati Hotties (2020) They always pop up in lists when I search for “more stuff like Sleigh Bells” but it finally clicked for me after listening to content//bedtime. Love this album.

Neverland: A Fantasy Role-Playing Setting (Andrews McMeel Publishing) Whoa okay so my weekly group just fled the land of the Fairies after some drama with the Queen of the realm (you can read about it here) and then my Mof1 game ALSO had some Fairy drama involving the Queen. Apparently she’s a dramatic lady.
