Micheal and Book <3
for starshaker for the @startrekwintergiftexchange ! :))
Sorry for the delay, I kind of went on an odussey with this piece but it’s finally here and I hope you like it! ^^
(Under the cut I included the 4 discarded sketches as a bonus :’D)
I discarded these bc I wasn’t happy with the likeness, and I tried that technique were you trace the structure of a face and the landmarks on it but I felt like it didn’t work for me, also I couldn’t make the pose work, my brain just refused it and also also I couldn’t draw grudge in a pose and prespective and style that made sense and was coherent with the rest of the picture, so I had to let this go and start over, it be like that sometimes  :”)

i love how frequently star trek Discovery says "we will have to sacrifice for the greater good, some of us wont make it." And then three seconds later it's "just kidding we beamed him out just in time. Everyone lives bitch."

The “woke politics” in question are apparently a cameo by a candidate and saying that letting political divides cause a fucking nuclear war is bad actually……

Just finished discovery s4 and. Oh boy oh boy oh boy. All I can think about now is a show that takes place like 10-20 years after the whole DMA and Species Ten-C thing, where the spore drive has been properly tested and perfected and become standard starfleet use. And the federation has used this to continue building bridges and alliances and connections further. To the point where they can better justify purely scientific and exploration based missions and then we get the first ship to be sent on an exploration mission outside the galaxy. There’s been an official starbase set up just outside the galactic barrier for years now that’s mainly been a seat for the Federation to maintain an alliance with the Ten-C. And now it becomes sorta the waypoint between this ship and the Federation. Have they solved the issue of communicating through the barrier yet? Idk. But we have this ship. It’s the first of its kind, a brand new exploration class. It’s bigger than most exploration vessels before, designed to be completely self-sufficient because there’s no telling how long they’ll be gone. It’s like Voyager but if they knew they were gonna be stranded without the means to communicate. I don’t think it’d necessarily be a family ship, like the Enterprise-D, maybe because of the uncertainty of what’s to come. The ship would have a huge linguistic department, as the Ten-C incident would prove the necessity of. And then, I know that starfleet captains have the authority in most cases to speak for the federation, but I feel like in this situation, where the ship is going to a place comms can’t reach, things would be a little different. And so then we get the diplomatic core. A small team of Federation diplomats as a permanent feature of the crew. The Captain has ultimate authority of their ship, however, in diplomatic issues the core has the authority to vote and overrule the captains decision. This leads to huge conflict between the captain and the diplomat leader. Neither of them is sure of what to make about the other. Is this ship yet another iteration of the Enterprise? This seems to match its mission statements from the past, but I could also see it being completely new, a start to something else. This was so much longer than I meant but man. I hope they stay in the 32nd century. They’ve created a really interesting world and I wanna see MORE. Do we think s5 will go out of the galaxy again?? Will we find out Ten-C’s actual name??? No clue, but excited to see

Listen, I know that feelings are mixed in this tag right now but hear me out.
The high of late June is gone and many of us here are still picking apart the crumbs for hope.
However, I want to discuss what I’ve seen going on lately in the general ST fandom. I noticed that many people beyond us Bylers are talking about the Mike/Will/El dynamic of season 4. The love triangle is unresolved and I’ve seen, specifically on TikTok and Twitter, lots of Mike-centered discourse. Melvins are pounding the pavement to defend their ship against even the most casual fans who point out that the build up to the love confession/the confession itself was suspicious or that Mike was an oblivious idiot to Will. People are rooting for Will and I think this was the goal- to make the arc of Byler feel earned, not rushed. Slow burn.
Essentially, I have been seeing a lot of these things happening:
Melvins feeling defensive over the state of their ship. Taunting Bylers and berating anyone who criticizes Mike/Melvin online.
Regular viewers noticing Mike’s inconsistencies and questioning things like his love at first sight lie and how he needed Will to get him to confess.
Bylers feeling defeated. We saw it a lot sooner than others so for us it’s a let down, for others it’s a discovery.
Even though we were disappointed in V2, the Duffers actually did their job. Will is canonically gay and his bestie just happens to be having a very Will-centric and confusing set of circumstances. Yes, there are still people who don’t even notice Will is queer. Those are lost causes. But many people are truly starting to catch on and are more open to the idea of Byler while Melvins are for some reason at their most feral (from what I’ve seen at least).
Just thoughts to keep us all grounded and realize we do not exist here in a bubble and the Duffers managed to get their point across well enough for general audiences to start discoursing around this love triangle being legit, not some joke/one sided thing. People picked up on the imagery in the “two days later” shots (couch, final shot) that were drenched in symbolism.
Remember- the first shot of Mike was in front of his one way sign and closet. They kept him in the closet this season but the door’s not closed. I really think they haven’t derailed Byler, they just got lots of people to see it for the first time in both V1 and V2. The symbolism and subtext never let up all season. It wasn’t the ending we wanted but I don’t think Byler is dead in the water by any means.
Thanks for coming to my Ted talk.

post volume 2 byler hope
i know volume 2 has left us feeling very pessimistic and hopeless for the possibility of byler. yet, i do still think there is reason to hope and so i have compiled a list of amazing posts that have definitely increased my faith in s5 byler.
(here is a small disclaimer that even though byler just makes sense to us narratively and overall, there is still a chance that the duffers won’t go through with it. if you choose to have hope regardless, that’s great! but pessimism is absolutely valid too. cautious optimism is definitely recommended)

Top 5 ST Voy episodes OR alternately, top 5 most rewatchable episodes of Voy
Top 5 Voyager episodes! Oh boy! This is hard! I do like quite a bit of Voyager episodes (mostly season 4 onwards), I'm gonna cheat a bit and put 2 episodes as 1.
The Scorpion-The Gift trilogy. For me Scorpion part 1 and 2, and The Gift is a three-parter introduction of Seven of Nine
Scientific Method - JANEWAY FLIES THE VOYAGER BETWEEN BINARY STARS. Discovery had a battle of the binary stars, JANEWAY FLEW BETWEEN BINARY STARS.
Year of Hell. A Classic. Peak Janeway.
Dark Frontier - Borg Queen tries to kidnap Seven of Nine. Seven of Nine learns more about her parents and discovers she's furious about her parents. To the point that she didn't even attempt to rescue her borgified father. (And then 20 years later claims the Borg killed her parents. LOL, that's not what happened Seven).
Night - I love the break-in format in Night as a season premiere. It's not action-packed (except for the last act). It's a slower episode dealing with Janeway's clear depression.
Special mention, most rewatched Voyager episodes:
Survival Instinct - Seven of Nine discovers the consequences of her actions when she was a Drone, in the form of three former Borg.
Barge of the Dead - B'Elenna-centric episode is one of the few B'Elenna episodes, there should have been more.
Tsunkatse - Seven in a battle arena. Almost every show had this episode, but did the other shows have the Rock???? No, they don't. Fun episode, Tuvok and Seven bonding, and Seven angst? What more can you ask?
The Killing Game two-parter. The crew of Voyager become the French Resistance called the Maquis, Janeway in a white suit, and Seven as a chanteuse who is secretly a weapon expert? B'Elenna is still a badass even when she's pregnant. Tuvok, the stoic Vulcan bartender!
Hope and Fear - Lovely episode is about Janeway facing the consequences of allying with the Borg.
The Raven - We learn more about Seven of Nine's past. And Tuvok and Seven's BFF status starts.
Omega Directive - We learn more about Borg mythology and Seven is face to face with the closest thing to divinity she acknowledges.
Relativity - Time Travel shenanigans with Seven of Nine and we learn Janeway is a Menace to Time Travel. LOL. Maybe they should have deployed Janeway during the Temporal Cold War.
Honestly, there's more but I'll stop there.

In 1741, the Russian ship St. Peter, part of Vitus Bering’s expedition of discovery, shipwrecked on one of the islands while returning from the first European exploration of Alaska. Bering’s scurvy-wracked men spent a miserable winter, killing marine mammals for food and warding off the fearless arctic foxes (Alopex lagopus) that tried to eat the dying. Georg Wilhelm Steller, the expedition’s naturalist, devoted much of his time to a study of the island’s fauna, later published to great interest in Europe. Few Europeans had ever experienced the numbers and variety of marine mammals that the men encountered on these islands. “If I were required to state how many [fur seals] I saw on Bering Island,” Steller wrote, “I should truthfully say that I could not guess -- they were countless, they covered the whole shore.” [...]
---
When the remnants of the expedition arrived in Kamchatka in the summer of 1742, their tales of the abundant sea otters, fur seals, and sea cows sent Russian fur traders (promyshlenniki) from Siberia to hunt in the newly discovered waters. [...] Initially, the promyshlenniki found the animals to be as unbelievably numerous as Steller had reported them to be. The first hunters killed as many as fifty sea otters per day, several gigantic sea cows (used for food and leather) per season, and thousands of the arctic foxes that had once eaten Russians. [...]
---
Beginning with Steller’s two-year visit, hunting had been carried out at an unsustainable rate. The sea otter population entered a serious crash seven years after Steller’s shipwreck -- in 1749 and 1750 -- when at least four crews hunted in the Commanders. In what must have been a vast and ceaseless slaughter, hunters killed at least 1,380 sea otters (roughly a quarter of the entire estimated population) in these two years alone. By 1754 the population had probably dropped below eight hundred animals spread across the two islands -- a decline of 85 percent over twelve years -- numbers low enough that hunters would have had trouble locating the animals at all. In 1757, hunters suddenly began bypassing the Commanders for the Aleutian Islands [...]. Nearly forty years later, Commander Islands’ sea otters still had not recovered from the onslaught of 1749 − 1750. [...]
---
The Russian fur trade in the Pacific differed from the New World European terrestrial fur trades in another way. The Russians, besides trading for furs with the Aleuts, also demanded from them a yearly tribute of furs (called yasak), as they had with all conquered Siberian peoples. The fur traders forced compliance by taking some members of the community hostage and promising their safety only upon delivery of furs. As more and more Aleut communities fell under promyshlennik domination in the course of the eighteenth century, yasak collection naturally increased. At the same time that the supply of sea otters was in steep decline, tribute demands increased. [...]
---
By then, all involved in the trade expected sea otters to disappear rapidly; they no longer expected sea otters to behave like sables. Irkutsk governor Ivan Iakobii reported to Catherine II in 1787 that “we know from many examples that the hunting has decreased substantially each year. There is absolutely no doubt, when one realizes that millions of animals have been taken [in the North Pacific]. One can therefore suppose that in a few years the animals will be completely depleted [...].” By the time the Russian American Company (RAC) was granted a monopoly on the trade in 1799, it too was forced to begin looking immediately for new hunting grounds in southeastern Alaska. [...]

just some thoughts from a byler shipper who only really got into the byler/general ST tumblr fandom after Season 4 Vol. 1. I think it helped me bounce back quicker after Vol. 2.
I never expect canon main queer relationships in media that aren't explicitly marketing itself as queer or with significant queer content (watch Star Trek Discovery if you wanna see a gay protagonist in a relationship have powers and be plot relevant in a mainstream-ish sci-fi setting). Plus I never thought about Stranger Things as anything more complex than popcorn flick media. I've been watching it since it aired, read a few fics here and there, but still, basically I only really had one month of invested time getting into the byler "hype". Which of course were dashed by Vol. 2. TBH I still haven't rewatched Vol. 2 because I still think it sucked outside of byler lmao. But then I remembered what I said myself just a few days after I watched Vol. 1:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
link to the tumblr post since my screenshot is very low contrast.
it's very broad strokes but early June me was pretty much right on how ST would go about byler this season. Did they do it in a heavily problematic way? Hell yeah, especially if they don't follow through. But did they accomplish what I assume to be their goals (root for Will, feel weird about supporting MiIeven, have no concrete answers for either ship, while letting people in denial about byler believe it won't ever happen)? they totally did.
Like, listen. I'm not purporting to be some know-all fan. There's still a chance the series isn't going to follow through. But they did set things up for byler so that it reasonably could be the endgame ship. And right now, that's enough for me. I still really dislike S4 regardless, and likely won't watch S5 without reading spoilers/reviews first lmao but in the end, we've got about 2 years to wait this out, why not spend it with some moderate amount of hope? and also maybe watch Star Trek Discovery in the meantime

Stranger Things + Let The Right One In Parallel
Hello everyone! I've made a post about this on my tiktok already, but I'm trying to expand to tumblr so I thought I would also document this discovery here.
I'm slowly working my way through the Stranger Things Season 4 Inspiration Board, and I was lucky enough to find a direct parallel between two scenes from the show and a movie called Let The Right One In.
Tumblr media
Let The Right One In is a 2008 Swedish horror film centering around a 12 year old child vampire. Lots of vampire movies on the inspo board for ST, actually.
Tumblr media
Anyway, the film's main character is named Oskar. He's a 12 year old boy who is quiet and is often bullied (the film doesn't show it but in the book it's usually for his weight and he's also called the f-slur a lot.)
Tumblr media
One particularly brutal scene shows him being held back and hit with a riding crop by his bullies.
Tumblr media
After a pep talk from his vampire bsf, Oskar does, indeed, decide to hit back.
Tumblr media
The scene where El hits Angela with a roller skate is clearly in reference to this
Tumblr media
More visual parallels:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Obviously there's a difference in things like the angle of the camera-- the camera is positioned below Oskar to make him appear powerful and victorious, because he's finally stood up for himself and that makes him feel good. The camera remains to be eye-level with El because she doesn't feel victorious, she clearly feels awful for what she's done. Same thing for Angela/Conny. Conny has been humiliated in front of his entire class, so the camera points down at him to show him as weak. Angela, however, has support and sympathy from those around her. They do not see what happened to her as humiliation, they see her as a victim of a brutal attack.
That difference aside, this is a pretty direct parallel. I've already watched two more movies on the list, and I can tell I got really lucky finding one this clear the first time, lol.

Star Trek Discovery is having it's last season. I read an article saying that It was terrible. That's an opinion I don't share. I think it's a great addition to a pantheon. Why?
It's delves into all that the original series and the new generation could not or did not. Example: The Klingon and the Federation have not been in contact in 100 years. Michael Burnham fires on them which starts a galactic war using the Vulcan Hello. 2. There were different tribes of Klingon and they looked different from any that we had seen before. 3. The Klingons ate their enemies. 4. Discovery was the first series to use the F bomb. 5. It showed that Dylinthum crystals were not infinitely supplied, worlds were mined and destroyed from their use. Discovery is a spore powered vessel, it was powered by a space whale that was imprison and it's drive would torture it. 6. Star Ship personnel that looked different, Burnham had a vulcan bowl cut, braids and a fro. Tilly had long red, wholly hair. Tilly was kinda chubby. There was an ensign who sustained injuries that left her mostly a cyborg. Al Green's music is still played in the future.
But I think they doomed Discovery. They didn't give it the fairest of shots. You have a series where you have Soniqua Martin- Green, the first Black Woman lead character outside of the Uhura's. You have Michelle Yeoh in a recurring role where she is awesome. She just won a freaking Oscar. You have the great Obed Fehrer! You have use it to launch your pay network; Paramount Plus. You didn't put it on Amazon, Hulu, Netflix or anywhere people could see it and enjoy it right away. You didn't rotate the seasons onto Amazon or any other app so people who didn't subscribe to Paramount Plus could get into the show. YOU made it so they had to pay to see it. Then you followed with Picard. That was a stink foot move. Paramount hamstrung Enterprise over a decade ago. Discovery honored Enterprise by adding Captain Archer to the canon something other Treks series and movies have not done.
All these things can be addressed and added to other series.
Now Enterprise was the very first star ship that used warp and left the earth. Staff was scared to use transporter, no Red shirts, no Prime directive, First Man to get pregnant after coming in contact with a species, Humans who objected to working or even having contact with other species on Earth, no photon torpedoes, phasers. The reason this matters is because Star Trek has always been stuck with Captain Kirk fighting some alien and winning, preaching platitudes of Moral superority or screwing every alien Woman he came across who all conveniently had two eyes, legs, boobs.
Every other ST series has had to follow that formula and when it hasn't then it's deemed a failure. Time to expand the story. It's worth it.
