Stabby Bois
Ah, ok, so it’s only taken me all of March and April to get to March’s dice set but I have gotten to it and that’s a functional thing. I admit, I’ve been just so, so tired the last few weeks and getting back into it is always a process, but it’s a process worth undertaking and it means I get to talk about books and table top games and, most relevant today, dice. These guys are Dice Envy’s Pride…

Crystal Shard D20s!
I'm really liking alternative dice shapes lately - particularly these crystal / stabby / plumbob shaped d20s. What do you think? Do you like these, or do you prefer the normal icosahedral d20?

I have just enough energy in me tonight for my favorite solo duty. This one's a doozy, and the final thing that stands between us and Endwalker! ...which I'll start tomorrow. There are also some Thoughts on the expansion as a whole at the end under the cut.
For those of you who have been keeping an eye on this journey, thank you ❤ It's not over yet and is most definitely going to loop back to stuff I did before starting here: there will eventually be another run through ARR to current sometime after the graphics update hits every expansion, so likely late next year. I've got a hrothgal waiting in the wings for that one... and do plan to do this to Dawntrail on my main with appropriate spoilers tagged as well as the usual one. We shall see how that goes.
Now, into the duty!
Alphinaud's character growth is so very visible to us after Arenvald's pep talk. The kid is a natural-born leader, and despite his mistakes he has enough confidence to really use his gifts... after a little push from his friends and family.
And now, we fight! The Scions take the field in full force - first as a group, and then splitting up across the field to take charge of several enemies. Our first stop is us clearing the field of a LOT of tempered Imperials... then splitting up to find and deal with Lunar Primals wherever we can while G'raha holds the fort.
And now, the real fun: We get to cosplay as a few of the Scions! Starting with Alisaie! RDM is my favorite caster, and this simplified take on it is very much faithful to my experience with it itself. Lots of little enemies, one big one, and a very fun slice-n-dice playground.
Development: "Random" magical glyphs that are pointed at the heart of a massive "aetheric confluence" - which is just a fancy way of describing a spot where several aetheric currents meet - and Y'shtola's guess is that they're there to enable some seriously nasty disasters should one of the Grape-flavored Primals reach and destroy one. Cool, the stakes have risen.
Split #2 has us afield as Urianger's Astro, facing Lunar Odin - which I did NOT do in my original playthrough nor this one, so I had no idea what to expect. I'm not an Astro player, but after some experience with one of my static members being... particularly annoyed with it, this wasn't quite so bad. Odin down!
Split #3 is back to G'raha and Alisaie, but now we're playing as G'raha who is some combo of BLM and WHM, facing off with Lunar Ravana. Big stabby sword bug. Woo. He's just as cool as the original fight, if a little toned down for story and "2-man" reasons. Big stabby stuff, and even an excuse to use G'raha's Break spell! Bugman down!
Now, back to the WoL with Estinien and Alphinaud facing down the monster that crippled Arenvald: Grape Ifrit. This one's personal. And boy howdy wthat one was the most intense of the three. Fire everywhere, a big LB3-like thing out of Estinien, the works. But it's the last of the primals, and we're all still alive.
I love this duty so very much. Not only because we get to spend some time as our Scion friends. Not only because we get to fight primals in a more one-on-one style that helps me imagine how to write it when I get there. It's also because there are stakes going in - stop the crazy person with lots of power who's trying to end the world - that become more specific during the fight, and then when the evil plan is thwarted, they don't just gloss over the aftermath.
We get to see our friends being VERY human. Alisaie is exhausted and berating herself for not doing enough. Alphinaud cannot stand losing anyone, and we have to watch him fight that when his healing isn't enough to save the man in front of him. We see the Grand Company of Eorzea at work - city-state leaders and beastmen tribes alike working together to cure the tempered. We cannot save everyone, an Amalj'aa warrior reminds the Scions, but those we have saved would not have been if not for you.
"So please, hold your heads high." The entire bustling field stopped and listened. Every single country we have visited, from the Alliance to Doma, is represented here. Standing behind the Scions, who gave everything they had to win the day, despite the cost. The moon breaks through the clouds above, and one last time we hear the Shadowbringers main theme break through as everyone gathered stares up at it, and the credits roll.
================================================
As I sit and process this entire expansion one more time, it's clear... Shadowbringers fundamentally alters your brain chemistry. That's from one of the posts going around the week I wrapped this up, and it is extremely accurate. We started all the way back in ARR as an adventurer with a gift, but little else, and got used. We slowly turned into something else on our way into Heavensward ("What are you?" - Thordan VII after we beat him) and used the power we had to liberate two entire countries from the Garlean empire alongside our friends, then watched them get snatched away from us for some unknown reason.
And then we went to where they were and found ourselves embroiled in a world that flipped the script on everything we knew. Light was bad, Dark was good, and everything we thought we knew was wrong. Discoveries with ripple effects that will be felt through Endwalker and beyond were made, and two entire worlds were changed as a result.
I'm not that good at analyzing story, or at least I didn't think I was when I started. All I knew is that this expansion was The Best that FFXIV had to offer, and I wanted to find ways to articulate why I thought that. I think I've succeeded, at least a little. I'm very excited for Endwalker and Dawntrail and beyond. Maybe I'll even get some creative spark going and write more of ARW for your enjoyment and my own - I want to do more than think about my blorbo :)
One more Arenvald Appreciation post tomorrow, most likely, and then into Endwalker!

re: stabby hands, dicks stab things
I guess (you are not selling sex here) but Father's kids are like that post about dogs being bred with jobs. Their powers usually seem to tie into a role he wants them to fill. Strength, endurance, and speed make sense if you're spending 400 years digging a hole. Gluttony was meant to be a bootleg portal. Envy's powers make sense for their sin but they also use them for disguise and infiltration. I'm not sure what an ultimate spear capable of piercing any substance brings to the table in that sense. The only things I can think of would be a) countering the ultimate shield, but if Ed could work around that I assume Father could too or b) since the mannequin soldiers seemed like they were powered by philosopher's stone shards, and stones are a perfect substance, maybe only the spear can break them? Perhaps on her off time Lust is hanging out in the basement dicing philosopher's stones while listening to radio dramas.

40-60 minutes intro to DND
Or, as I dubbed it: DND Lite
So today I introduced DND to one of my classes and they wanted to do a try out game. I had no dice, no map, no freaking idea how to explain the rules...but then I remembered I'd watched an interesting video about how to start a DND club at a school (link in reblog) and I figured, fuck it, we want the feeling of DND not the actual game.
So here's what I did:
Step 1:
Give players a character sheet and roll a single set of stats. Make sure nothing is below six, or even 9 if you want to be really sure they won't get stumped.
Give the players the following instructions:
- If you want to use magic, pick Wisdom, Intelligence or Charisma for your highest number.
- If you want to use a blunt weapon pick strength.
- If you want to use a stabby weapon, pick dex.
Step 2:
- Give everyone an AC of 10 + Dex mod and HP of 10 + Con mod.
- Ask the weapon users to pick a specific weapon (we had a bow, two scythe, and a scimitar) and tell the magic users they have two spells: Fire and Heal (treat them like cantrips)
- Everything is worth 1d6, no modifier added, everything works like an attack roll (AOE just complicates things)
Step 3:
- They all wake up in a dungeon with only one door and some barrels. Let them look around and come up with ideas, building on things as they go. All DCs are 10.
- There's a big pit and a corridor behind the door. If you're like me, you're thinking 'they'll learn how to jump' but your players turn the barrels into a bridge instead
- At the end of the corridor there's another room with three giant rats. They can try to walk around, come up with a different solution (like a chandelier in the rafters or something) or fight.
Step 4:
Let them come out of the weird dungeon into the light and end however you want.
This gives the feeling of DND (making rp decisions, rolling dice, adding mods) in the most SIMPLE way possible with zero commitment to anything and gets them to play ASAP instead of struggling with character making for an hour.
Step 5 (not yet tested)
Use the same method for your first DND club 1h session, then gradually Build-a-bear your players'characters
I'm thinking we might add races one or two sessions in and write down proficiencies but only using the ability mods and special feats/speeds at first, then use proper weapon rolls, then add classes & special abilities, then proper proficiencies?
Or maybe a different order, we'll see^^
Important !
Let your players know you are simplifying a lot of things. If this version is too much for them, which was the case for two of my players, then the full game may not be for them.

I couldn’t not write a lil something after seeing @lazybakerart ‘s awesome Billy ~
It’s a bit short, but happy birthday, love! You’re a light in this fandom and a constant inspiration. Have a wonderful day!
~ read on ao3 ~
[ summoner!billy x demon!Steve - nsfw sexy time ]
• • • • •
Billy strolled to the counter of the video store. He counted dollar bills in his wallet, whereas all heads were lifted to see the news story on the overhead televisions. Billy thought this place was supposed to be showing movies on those, but 60 Minutes was sure as hell making its money.
Robin, the clerk, thankfully did math faster than the cash register. She smiled and sounded relieved when she said, “You’re not as riveted to the board game drama as everyone else?”
Billy smirked with a glance at the screen. SATANIC PANIC slid on an endless banner beneath the news anchor sitting at his desk. “If they care so much about dice rolling, then Vegas will just be a desert soon.”
Robin scoffed, “If kids’ board games made as much money as casinos, no one would give a damn. Enjoy your movies.”
“Oh, I will,” he grinned, and then paused with his eyes on the tiny shelf of candy bars on the counter. “Actually, give me all of those.”
Robin already had a hand reaching for them when she repeated, “All of them?”
Billy simply opened the bag holding his movies for her to drop them in. “My date likes Paydays.”
He gave her the cash and strolled out to his car. More grocery bags rustled in the breeze as he drove home. He’d had to restock; his date was a high maintenance catch, but Billy wasn’t the catch-and-release type.
Which accounted for the latest decor on his floor. He’d already rolled up the rug and moved the furniture out of the way so the the pentagram had all the space it needed. Steve had helped him paint it, since he claimed the original drawing on a notebook was like a bad telephone connection.
Steve, who liked his alfredo salty and his candy bars cold. Billy could understand that last one if it was summer, but they still had a month or so before such heat arrived.
Regardless, he threw the bars into the fridge and started dinner. The sauce was surprisingly easy, so while the noodles cooked, Billy went around the pentagram lighting candles. They take a few seconds too long to light, since they’re new, but Billy has done this so many times that it’s fast. Much faster than the whole evening it took the first time.
As he held his lighter over the last candle, he started the incantation. He kept his voice deep in his chest, both because there had to be some feeling to all of this, and because Steve liked when he made his voice extra low.
The wick caught aflame, and the lighter got tossed onto the couch so Billy could handle the next part.
Steve called it an athame.
Billy called it a dull knife.
So, he didn’t use a knife. He used a sharp as hell box-cutter blade with a bit too much olive oil on his fingers.
“Fuck. Jesus,” he cursed as red, red dripped onto his floor -
“He’s a dick, what are you calling him out for? Billy.”
Steve’s jaw dropped at the sight of his bleeding hand. Billy just smiled, loving the way his boyfriend just manifested out of thin air like that. The first time had been so theatrical and clumsy. Nearly burnt the house down. Now Billy as good as left the door unlocked for him.
Steve frowned like a pissy mother hen. He grasped that bleeding hand and towed Billy back to the kitchen sink. “I thought I told you to get one of those pokey, stabby things that diabetics use.”
“I couldn’t make it to the pharmacy today,” Billy purred while water moved over his hand. “Why are you playing nurse? Get your horns out, baby.”
Steve sighed, but that vein in his forehead began to bulge. The one in his neck too. Steve had pretty veins. And the demon was hungry. Reaching...why Steve was pretending some sort of chivalry was beyond his and Billy’s experience.
“Infection tastes disgusting. And if you run out of blood, you die.”
“Are you saying you’re not ready to move in together?” Billy taunted. But then he conceded, “This just happened. There’s nothing to clean.”
“It’s you.”
“What’re you saying?” Billy’s tone darkened. He was good with his bark. Good with his bite too.
It softened Steve right into shifting his weight, slouching a little and looking up at him from underneath heavy lashes. “It’s not considered healthy to want my type of company. Especially permanently.”
Billy lightened up. He smiled as he lifted his hand out of Steve’s to turn the faucet off. He let his hand bleed. “Aren’t you the source of sin and pleasure and temptation?”
“I just worry about you, B - ”
That wet hand touched his cheek, holding him still for Billy to kiss up into his mouth, because his demon was taller even when slouching. Despite the plush softness of his lips, Billy felt the stiffness of Steve’s features. He opened his eyes to see Steve’s brows pinched together; the breaths through his nose were too shallow as he tried and failed to avoid the smell of delicious red.
“What’re you waiting for? The pasta’s still got another minute.”
Steve’s eyes went out of focus as his eyelids heavily shut. He turned his face into Billy’s palm, blindly licking and finding the split in his flesh. Billy winced a little at the sharp prickle of friction on an open wound, but it didn’t last long. Steve had said there were different types of demons.
Steve wasn’t the pain type.
Billy didn’t know if he manipulated his mind or his nerves or all of it, but his hand stopped hurting. Instead of sharp prickles, he felt the slick muscle of Steve’s tongue. The tickle made him smile. Made his dick move in his jeans.
Steve wasn’t the shame type of demon, either.
Billy felt himself moved against the counter, but only for a moment because Steve started to struggle with his sweatshirt. The demon dressed like the prissiest prep Billy had ever seen, but he grinned because he knew why that shirt was coming off. It moved and roiled with wings caged inside it. Billy held his sleeves for Steve to yank his arms free and dump the thing onto the floor.
His horns almost blended in with his hair. Dark brown and curved, with the slightest golden sheen like Steve’s hair.
His wings had nowhere to hide, though. With whatever glamor Steve used wearing off, the large wings stretched wide, knocking over a kitchen chair. Billy chuckled and put his hands on Steve’s waist. Felt the way the skin almost seamlessly shifted into his dark feathers...
Billy had asked once why Steve’s wings were so patchy. He still had the soft plumery over the topmost ridge and joints of his wings, but when they stretched like that, the bare skin made him look equal parts bat and bird.
“Did falling from grace burn your wings?” Billy had teased, but also genuinely wanted to know.
A guard had gone up behind Steve’s eyes. Made him a real bitch to talk as Billy learned through trial and error Steve’s sweeter traits. Billy liked the sweet. He liked the bitch too.
“Corporate policy doesn’t give away that information,” he’d replied. Whatever that means. Billy’s thoughts on ‘God’ were skeptical and loose.
Billy glanced at his hand while Steve kissed his way down Billy’s throat. Healed. Not so much as a pink line of scar tissue. He could feel the silken strands of Steve’s hair with ease, and the hard, smooth ridges of a horn curving along his skull.
Lips continued down the exposed skin of Billy’s torso. Steve yanked the unbuttoned shirt from his jeans and popped the closure. Like a dial being cranked up, Billy’s erection filled all the way up, standing out of his jeans. He shuddered through his voice and held onto that horn. He might never get used to that; how Steve could turn his arousal up like a dimmer switch.
He’d still held the box cutter blade when Steve towed him to the kitchen. Billy had to do a little more work to rile Steve up, but he was feeling feisty today.
“Billy,” the demon growled, dark eyes lifting to him when he smelled fresh blood. Then he gasped, “Billy!” as a bloody palm grasped his forehead. Billy raked through Steve’s hair, smearing red over his skin, which shined like inconspicuous oil through his hair. When Billy gripped one of his horns, Steve vocally shuddered. He held onto Billy’s hips and would have rested his head on Billy’s abdomen if he was not held in place.
“Pasta timer says three minutes,” he crooned. A challenge.
Steve grimaced slightly, but not from pain or dislike. Billy could see the strain of Steve’s erection on his khakis where he knelt for him.
And then Steve drooled. He moved his head along Billy’s shaft, salivating from the scent of his blood, the aroma of his skin. Billy’s cock gave little kicks with his heart beat as he thought about how wet Steve must be in his pants.
He soon had to focus, though, because his toes lifted off the linoleum as Steve took him inside his mouth. The counter behind him caught him as Steve started a pace that escalated quickly. It was wet, sloppy, and delicious. Billy’s orgasm climbed with a dizzying speed, making him clench his hand on Steve’s horn.
Steve whined around the head of his dick, wanton and loud. As much as Billy liked being serviced, he wanted to give Steve something. He moved his foot between Steve’s splayed thighs and raised his foot to nudge the inseam of those khakis.
Steve’s knees closed around him, holding his foot there. His pelvis moved in tiny, clumsy thrusts while he brought Billy to a hard finish inside his mouth.
“Ah! Hahh,” Billy exhaled, panting like he was doing the work, holding onto both horns as Steve wrung him dry.
When Billy had nothing left, Steve tried to kiss his low tummy, even biting -
“No biting,” Billy scolded, but on his lustful breaths it sounded like a laugh or even an invitation. Before Steve could decide which one, Billy shoved him all the way down to the floor. Steve went willingly, lying beneath him as Billy shoved his jeans and underwear down, kicking them off. Steve looked beautiful, the way his body curved as he gazed up at him, large hands undoing his khakis and pushing them down like he were almost too tired or horny to manage it himself.
And he was wet.
Billy plopped right down on his thighs, taking that sloppy cock in hand and giving it slow pulls. He laughed against the bucking of Steve’s pelvis, because Steve had the strength to send him through the ceiling. Caught between willful lust and stopping himself from hurting him, Steve was a beautiful mess underneath him.
Billy felt pent up despite having seen Steve just yesterday. A tiny part in the back of his mind whispered that this was how addiction started.
And.
Well.
That little voice moaned with him when he lifted himself over Steve’s cock head, and sat right down. Steve cried out and then silenced himself by slamming his head back agains the floor. Billy cackled, loving the effect he had on him. “We’ve got all night and tomorrow. I took the day off.”
Steve blinked up at him, whiskey eyes engorging like the iris moved, not just the pupil. It was eerie and unsettling and Billy’s jaw went slack with how Steve commanded Billy’s blood to fill his erection again. Steve’s hands found the meaty junction of Billy’s thighs and hips. He held on there as he started thrusting up into him.
It took a moment for Billy to feel the pace and match it, planting his knees on the linoleum and getting his hands on Steve’s chest hair. Just the scratch of it against his skin made him sigh, “Hahh, yeah...” as his pelvis found the rhythm.
They met each other halfway, and it didn’t take long before Steve cried, “Billy. Ah! I’m there! Billy. Billy!”
Billy’s face and chest were flushed pink, his orgasm at Steve’s command as they rut against each other with brutal force. He knew his lumbar would hurt in an hour, but Steve, the worry wart, would take care of him. After their first night together, the loon had made Billy an epsom salt bath for christ (?) sake.
It took their climax a long minute to ease down, and only then did Billy realize that the timer on the microwave had gone off. It repeated it’s obligatory beeping, since he hadn’t turned it off -
Steve waved his hand, causing whatever circuit was in Billy’s microwave to cut out. The digital numbers went dark. Billy turned his head back to Steve, who grinned at him like he was drunk, and then reached for his bleeding hand like a damn lollipop.
The pasta was only a little bit soggy.

Take Drumsticks and Make Stew
I'm autistic, I have executive dysfunction, and sometimes I just want to eat the same thing. Sometimes, I want something different but I want the steps to make it to be similar to something I've done before - familiar steps.
Here are three different "easy versions" stews with different flavors and textures, but pretty similar steps.
I am also dyspraxic, so I prefer to avoid chopping by using pre-chopped/frozen/freeze dried where I can.
Chicken Fricassee
Adapted from this (his video is helpful)
(I love this over mashed potatoes)
Ingredients
▢3 ½ pounds chicken thighs or a combination of legs and thighs
▢4 tablespoons butter divided
▢2 tablespoons olive oil
▢ mirepoix mix
▢ sliced mushrooms
▢3 teaspoons minced garlic minced
▢¼ cup flour
▢3 cups low sodium chicken stock
▢1 cup dry white wine
▢1 tablespoons freeze died parsey
▢4 sprigs thyme
▢4 sprigs parsley
▢1 large bay leaf
▢salt and pepper to taste
▢½ cup heavy cream
▢2 large egg yolks at room temperature
Get a Dutch oven or a really big skillet, as long as the ingredients all fit and it has a lid.
Pour in 2 tablespoons of olive oil and turn the heat to medium. Pat the chicken very dry with paper towels and season very well with salt and pepper on both sides. Put the drumsticks in and sear for two minutes, then add a couple tablespoons of butter and turn the chicken to the other side. You're going to do two minutes on each side (the drumsticks have four sides, so two minutes per side, it should be about 8 minutes, the goal is to sear that skin and get some nice brown on the bottom of the cooking vessel)
Take out the chicken and put them in a bowl. Throw in the other two table spoons of butter. Pour in your mirepoix mix (I like the frozen one from my local Kroger variant, whole foods also has a fresh version and a frozen version that's available on Amazon). Cook it until it's no longer frozen, and warm and soft.
Dump in those mushrooms. (I buy pre-sliced, you can get whatever mushrooms and dice them if you want tho)
Cook until the mushrooms release their liquid (about 5 minutes). Season the veggies with a touch of salt. Add the garlic and cook until fragrant (about 1 minute) then add the flour and cook for 1 more minute stirring frequently to thoroughly incorporate.
Add the wine and chicken stock to the pot. (I like to just get a 4-cup measuring cup and put one cup of wine and three cups of chicken stock so I can pour them together). Turn the heat to high and with a wooden spoon dislodge all of the flavor bits from the bottom of the pot. Cook for 1 minute then turn the heat down to medium-high.
Carefully pour the chicken and juices back into the pot and add your flavor sticks and leaves (parsley sprigs, thyme sprigs, and bay leaf). Cook for 5 minutes or until bubbling aggressively.
Turn heat down to medium-low and cover partially with a lid. Cook for approximately 15 minutes then flip that chicken and cook 15 more minutes, or cook until the chicken thighs reach at least a 175f internal temperature. (a stabby thermometer is very helpful).
(If you're making mashed potatoes you can start preparing your potatoes while the chicken cooks).
Once the chicken is fully cooked, move it to a plate. If you want you can shred the chicken meat off the bone so it's easier to eat.
(Start your water boiling for the potatoes if you haven't already)
Turn heat to high and reduce the liquid in the pot by about half. This will take about 5 minutes. Do your best to remove all the flavor sticks and leaves.
Whisk the egg yolks and heavy cream together in a bowl. Add 1 tablespoon of the hot cooking liquid while whisking. Continue to add the liquid 1-2 tablespoons at a time until you have added at least ½ a cup of the hot liquid. (I like to just use a ladle to slowly drip hot soup into my eggy cream as I whisk).
Pour the tempered mixture back into the pot and stir well.
Add the minced parsley into the sauce and stir to combine. Taste test the sauce and season with salt and pepper to taste. For a touch more acid, add lemon juice to your liking, but the wine is normally sufficient. Return the chicken to the pot and cook for 3-5 minutes or until the chicken is hot.
Serve over mashed potatoes when ready, or if you don't want to mess with potatoes it's good over with crust bread.
Paprikas Chicken
Based on a recipe from A La San Francisco Restaurant recipes
(I like this served over rice)
1 2 - 3 lbs drumsticks (yes, you could just use a whole chicken, but legs and this is things to do with legs) diced onions 2 Tablespoon Oil
2 Tablespoon Butter 3 Tablespoon Sweet Red Hungarian Paprika (or 2T + 1T hot paprika) 1 1/2 chicken stock 2 teaspoon. Salt diced onion and pepper mix 1/2 teaspoon. Ground White Pepper 1 rounded tablespoon white flour 1/2 cup sour cream (room temp)
Pour in your chopped onions and chopped pepper (I like the frozen, fresh also works, there are also onion-pepper blends but you want more onions than pepper, so I usually do one bag onion and one bag onion pepper blend). Cook it until it's no longer frozen, and warm and soft.
Take your cooking vessel off the heat, add the paprika and mix well.
Pour the chicken into the paprika mixture and role it around, we are getting it coated.
Put your cooking vessel back on the heat. Cook over low heat for a few minutes stirring constantly making sure the paprika doesn't burn.
Add the chicken stock, salt and pepper.
Turn heat down to medium-low and cover partially with a lid. Cook for approximately 15 minutes then flip that chicken and cook 15 more minutes, or cook until the chicken thighs reach at least a 175f internal temperature. (a stabby thermometer is very helpful).
(start cooking your rice)
Once the chicken is fully cooked, move it to a plate. Shred the chicken meat off the bone so it's easier to eat.
In a bowl mix the flour with one tablespoon of cold water. Add the sour cream to the bowl and mix that in until everything is good and mixed together.
Stir the flour/sour cream mix into the sauce in the pot.
Bring it to a boil stirring constantly until the sauce thickens. Turn that down to a simmer.
Return the chicken to the pot and cook for 3-5 minutes or until the chicken is hot.
Serve over rice
Ajiaco (Colombian Chicken and Potato Soup) Inspired Recipe
Very loosely based on this Serious Eats Recipe (this is a low spoons/low executive function/low coordination/knife skills version that prioritizes using the same method as other stews)
4 cups chicken stock
1 pound chicken drumsticks
Salt, Pepper and Chilli Powder (serrano or jalapeno chill powder is best)
Bag frozen chopped onions
2 bay leaves
5 pounds mixed fingerling potatoes
1/4 cup dried guascas (you'll need to order this)
frozen corn
Chopped freeze dried cilantro
Kosher salt and freshly cracked black pepper
1/2 cup sour cream, thinned with 1 tablespoon milk
1/2 cup capers, rinsed, drained, and roughly chopped
1 ripe avocado, preferably smooth, light-green fuerte variety, sliced into wedges (or just use some frozen)
Get a Dutch oven or a really big skillet, as long as the ingredients all fit and it has a lid.
Pour in 2 tablespoons of olive oil and turn the heat to medium. Pat the chicken very dry with paper towels and season very well with salt and pepper and chili powder on both sides.
Pour in your chopped onions (again, I like using frozen). Cook it until it's no longer frozen, and warm and soft.
Add chicken stock to the pot. Turn the heat to high and with a wooden spoon dislodge all of the flavor bits from the bottom of the pot. Cook for 1 minute then turn the heat down to medium-high.
Carefully pour the chicken and juices back into the pot, add potatoes, bay leaf, and guascas.
Once the chicken is fully cooked, move it to a plate. Shred the chicken meat off the bone so it's easier to eat.
Continue to simmer potatoes until russets and papas Criollas are completely tender and falling apart, about 15 minutes longer, adding more water as necessary. Discard bay leaves. Using whisk, mash potato pieces against side of pot and stir vigorously to thicken soup. The soup should be thick, with large chunks of potatoes still remaining.
Add the frozen corn and continue to cook, stirring occasionally, until corn is cooked and soup is thickened to the consistency of thick heavy cream, about 15 minutes longer. Remove from heat.
Season soup to taste with salt and pepper. Add the chicken back.
Serve in a bowl with avocado on top and drizzle with sour cream (or Mexican Crema), sprinkle with cilantro, add capers.
Note: Authentic Ajiaco is lots of separate parts, chicken in a serving dish, corn on the cob in the soup, avacado on the side, capers and aji: onion, cilantro, and chile pepper in small serving bowl with water and salt and pepper. You add what you want to your bowl and your bite.
This is inspired by those flavors and easy to eat in bed.

There's also this is they want things to get heated at board game night.
They are going to have so much fun! I'm only worried about Stabby's ability to play board games but I'm sure someone would hold his card or throw the dice for him
