Ethnographic Report – Music at Millerntor Gallery

A large amount of clearly individual people, the famous Reeperbahn, about 22.000 inhabitants and still a very own football club with an own stadium. Which is very popular as well by the way. St. Pauli is a city district of Hamburg, which is well known far beyond the borders of the city. From 5th to 8th of July of 2018 the Millerntor Gallery takes place at the Millerntor stadium in Hamburg St.Pauli. The People who visit this festival are for a large amount the typical kind of people you expect to meet in that part of the city, very individual, alternative, open for conversation, kind of international but still kind of local and in some cases maybe a little bit left orientated. Whether this is due to the fact that the Millerntor Gallery is an art festival/convention or it is because of the location it takes place in, the mixture of people you meet there includes fairly every kind of human being you can imagine.

Soundscape

There are several sources of noise and sound at the festival. First of all there is of course the general mumbling sound that is typical for crowded places like this. The mumbling is very consistent and therefore kind of builds the foundation of the soundscape at the festival. Sometimes there are other noises that are recognizable through the mumbling and give it some more detail. Those are most of the time the spraying of some graffiti or the the sound of operating food trucks which are all over the place to supply the festival visitors with street food. Together these sources of sound create the so called “keynote sound” (Schafer, 1994). Over this very base sounds there is the noise of an interactive artwork recognizable. It has several installments like drums, sticks, metal pipes and its purpose is exactly what people do with it: create noise. (sound marks(Schafer, 1994(1977))) The probably most enjoyable and most prominent sound is the sound of the mainstage, where either different styles of background music where played or live acts took the stage and performed. This is also the place inside the area I choose to locate myself near to observe the whole scene and analyze the interaction of people with the music and through the music with each other.

Mainstage

The area which is provided for consuming the events at the main stage has a size of about 1000 square meters. It includes an area with seats and tables which are partly aligned to each other but also aligned to the main stage. A part of the purpose of these installations is to give people the opportunity to consume their food there while consuming the music coming from the stage the other part is probably just to invite people to stay and consume the music that is played there. Another installation that fulfills that first purpose are the tables you can stand around alongside the food trucks, they are located at the very outer border of the area, behind those tables, which are actually behind those tables with seats. Between those combined consuming installations and the stage there is a larger space with no special installations or anything else. Main purpose of this section of the area is probably to give people the opportunity to pass through the area, but the more near you get to the stage the more the purpose shifts to giving people space to stand in front of the stage and consume the events that are happening on it. On the left and right side of the stage there is also a terrace which also gives people the opportunity to sit there and listen to the music. Within this area I locate myself at the chairs with tables, they are already quite crowded when I enter the scene.

Development of crowd over time

When I attempt the scene there was already a pop music live act playing. The tables with seats, as well as the terrace and the tables at the food trucks are very occupied, people are not only sitting on the chairs but on the tables as well. More and more people approach the area now. Because every installation for consuming music is already occupied they now start to sit on the ground. As the concert proceeds a percentage of the people passing through the area is getting caught by the music and stops by to watch the concert. Some of them for a rather short, some of them for a longer period of time. These people do most likely not sit down. Over time this caused more and more people to be standing in the area watching the concert. Which of course resulted in the people who used to sit on the ground to stand up as well. In the final picture this has not affected the people who used to sit on furniture to stand up, the final circumstances in the area are the standing people in the passing through are and a lot of people at any installation within the area with the purpose of consuming the events at the stage.

Behavior Types

Finally I want to point out that the different types of consuming the concert (standing or sitting) come with different behavior types. Even though the very individual mixture of people that attend the concert people that sit behave in similar ways. The same goes for the people that consume the concert standing. The first type of people watch the concert in a kind of autopilot mode, you can clearly see that they are very relaxed and don’t really think about what is happening around them. As well you can spot intimacy in groups that are sitting while watching the concert. While he groups that are standing are actually way more focused on the actual event. They probably don’t really have the possibility to calm down to a level that would allow intimacy.

Further I’d like to point out that the behavior that I spotted during the event must not stand at all for any kind of regularity.
