costume design for my stage adaptation of chapter 9 of lady of the lake (stygga castle). this work was done in 2021, as the final project for my costume design class.
see the context and preliminary work for this project in this ask post.
i regret not being more fanciful and symbolic with the costumes (you can kind of see this direction in regis' designs, i was more explorative with his as he is a supernatural creature), but at the time i was more focused on accuracy to the book description, and felt i should try to 'do it justice' first: ascertain something like what they could have actually worn, just to give myself a starting point of realism.
(some noted inaccuracies: i didn't feel comfortable drawing yennefer as battered and bloody as she would have realistically been, so i didn't reflect this in my design. i also messed up on ciri's scar, because i didn't do my due diligence at the time).
i'd love to work on this hypothetical adaptation more and redesign these costumes to be more fitting with my updated vision at some point.

Gezras of Leyda
Chest: The Witcher School of the Cat did not have one specific home. Over the years, there were numerous hiding places in which witchers subjected their adepts to mutations. They created numerous camps where they trained together. Nevertheless, the founder of the Cats was indeed “created” in Stygga Castle, and thus—it was their first home. Not for long, however. In rebellion against those who created them, young Gezras led other witchers to escape the castle. Needless to say, they had to earn their freedom by force. After the painful experiments they were subjected to, many were more than eager to bleed the mages that had wronged them. Later, the Cats grew stronger, bolstering their ranks with badly mutated witchers who had been rejected by other schools. The outcasts gathered together to raise the next generations through corrupt experimental methods. Over time, their warped mutations and aggressive disposition earned them the disdain of other schools.
Scroll 1: Gezras, born a half-elf, was considered an abomination and sold to the mages of Stygga castle at a very young age. His mutations were part of a new process designed to dull the emotions of would-be witchers even more than usual. The new recipe, however, failed... spectacularly so. Instead of inhibiting emotions, the method—quite ironically—enhanced them, leaving Gezras and his new brothers permanently unhinged and prone to erratic behavior.
Scroll 2: More concerned with discovering the source of their error than the well-being of their test subjects, the mages caged their spoiled batch with the determination to dissect until a solution could be derived. Upon waking in a pile of discarded corpses, barely alive, Gezras was able to crawl out and free his remaining imprisoned brothers. Together, they somehow managed to escape into the night before the mages' labour could resume.
Scroll 3: Over the next few years, they found refuge among the Aen Seidhe, who helped them hide from those still seeking to abolish their past mistakes. In exchange for their sanctuary, they used their skills to engage in guerilla warfare and assassinations on behalf of the elves.
Scroll 4: Having grown in numbers and strength, the Feline witchers set forth to infiltrate the quarters of their misguided creators, slaughtering them as they slumbered. Their vengeance finally sated, Gezras led his newly-formed School of the Cat north where, free from their mired past, they could start anew.

I’m back from my hibernation with some art! Finally! This time we’re doing something set in the Witcher universe, all the way back with the Cats at Stygga Castle, wayyy before any of our beloved protagonists were born. Enjoy some future Witchers hanging out as kids, featuring two of @windflowerofskellige ‘s kids, and one of mine :) (And also Gezras of Leyda, who is an actual character from the Witcher universe)
This was the first time I’ve ever drawn a whole interior background before, and I also did some experimentation with lighting! I’m very proud of this one :)

Two weeks since their reunion had passed, and she found herself embodying the impatience that she felt in something of an insatiable itch; a feral, wild animal caged somewhere deep inside of her, scratching to get out. All seemed to be well - for now; Ciri was safe and unhurt, away from every thing that meant her harm; Geralt was here, with them, and the likelihood that she could steal the witcher away for this, if only for a short time, appeared doable. She shelved what guilt she felt if only for Ciri's sake. Too soon, one might have said was it for her to set out on this adventure, and yet the enchantress would not take any chances— not if it meant doing everything within her power to keep her daughter of Chaos safe and alive. She preferred to harness what power she could, now, before what most she feared once more came calling for them… And even though she deigned neither think nor speak of it —she was not foolish enough to truly allow herself believe the peace would last; there was just too many enemies hot on their trail; half of the Continent had been hunting them down for such long a time now, Yennefer felt as though they had not stopped running for years, now; there was still too much at stake, too many battles to be fought, obstacles to overcome. And even though, here, sheltered away on the edge of the world where naught but wolves & witchers dwelt, felt safe, Yennefer would not risk it.
Last night, the sorceress, after demanding the Witcher meet her here come the morn, proclaiming him the very best of trackers and herself in dire need of his skills, had then went on to pack a basket full of elixirs and potions ( meant to aid the Witcher track the creature she was after ) for their travels. The place of power she wanted to take Geralt was a few miles east, so they would be traveling on horseback; she was still recovering from the floods of dimeritium Vilgefortz had flown into her bloodstream and the atrocious abuses inflicted upon her, and the fact this Witcher of hers absolutely detested portals had not somehow escaped her memory.
Tumblr media
Standing in the stable area, now, swathed in a sable black cloak and with her violet eyes blazing like a river of purple mist in the sunlight, Yennefer pressed her palm to a restless mare’s flank, soothing her, ❝  a' caelme tedd…❞  she whispered the incarnation in Elder, tiny flickers of magic spilling from her fingertips in wisps of lilac light as she soothed the animal; she moved next to Geralt's horse, readying it, too, for their travels. ❝  easy, Roach… He won’t be too long now…❞  she uses her magic to conjure up a treat for the mount, delicately offering it up as she awaits his arrival, ❝  if he values certain parts of his body, that is… and what shall we name this one, hm? ❞ she indicates the mare she intends to ride herself, gloved hand still caressing Roach's mane. GODS, was she now, too, talking to horses? Perhaps surviving capture by Vilgefortz had left her short of a marble, after all!

While I'm here and talking about Hansa and Witcher and Stygga - I can't FORGIVE the english translators who translated Regis' HIS OWN FIRST ALMOST-SERIOUS SWEARWORD (not quoting Angouleme) in the whole f-king saga in a way so it wasn't a swearword in english anymore.
So when Regis comes back to Geralt and team during battle in Stygga, in english, he says something like "I feel such power I feel like I can blow the castle into smithereens" but in Polish he is says (not the exact quote, I don't have the books beside me) "Czuję, że mógłbym ten zamek rozpieprzyć". And the word "rozpieprzyć" is a lesser type swearword something like "fuck up" but more like "f-up", but you can't really say it to people in public if you want to look like a cultural and nice person. It's like the first instance when he says it on his own, under his own emotions and It's so funny and weird, that Geralt's "Hey Regis, chill" is even more understandable. Geralt's thought process must be like "I saw him hurt people, but he never swore before, It's getting serious".

𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘗𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦
They say that Toussaint is a fairytale land - and that is true even for its starry skies. And though their family already enjoys stargazing as an activity no matter which part of the continent they go to, Toussaint somehow always makes the activity feel even more magical, soothing and therapeutic. When Ciri is not around, Geralt nonetheless still brings Yennefer out on most nights, searching for the best stargazing spots together. He enjoys hearing her little sighs of happiness and relief, and watching her violet eyes glisten in the moonlight.
Yen will never admit it; her proud nature obviously forbids it - but that one year of captivity in Stygga Castle had made her feel more comfortable outdoors. Geralt could see it in her eyes - the contentedness and relaxed gaze as she looks around her surroundings. She would rather stay outdoors during the day than indoors, unless he were home. Even so, it seems they spent more time lounging outdoors then lazing indoors. Sometimes he would wonder if only he had not been such a fool, to believe that Yen had betrayed him and Ciri, and had worked harder to find her, she would not have suffered that much. Her discomfort of confined spaces might not have existed. She would not have had to wiggle her fingers unconsciously at the dinner table all the time, her eyes widening slightly, as if surprised that her fingers have been fully healed for a long time…
"Oh stop it, Witcher."
"What? I'm just calmly looking at the stars, just like you."
"You know I'll never blame you for that. I was —"
Geralt didn't let her finish. He leaned over and kissed her at the side of her head, at the same time breathing in her scent. Lilac and gooseberries. As usual, her presence calms his mind.
"I know." He said softly, "but sometimes we just can't seem to escape from what haunts us in our past."
A sad little smile played on Yen's lips. She knows it all too well.
"Your presence calms me too, you know." Yen said, as she leaned even closer to Geralt.
Just at that moment, a shooting star shone across the sky. Both their eyes lit up, feeling grateful to be able to see it that night.
"Still believe in wishes, Geralt?" Yennefer asked.
"Of course."
"Despite everything?"
"Despite everything…"

Cat Witcher!Jaskier Shenanigans - The Cat Army
In this universe, after the mountain, Jaskier was kidnapped by a mage, experimented on until he became a Witcher, and left for dead when he was thought to be useless. He was reunited with Geralt who realized he was in love, and shenanigans ensued. So when last we left these two, they were having a happily ever after in a cottage on the coast as Ciri's Two Dads. All was going well! UNTIL!!!! The original mage who experimented on Jaskier has been hard at work creating the perfect assassin for hire wanted him back. He sent a dozen cat Witcher creations to drag him from the cottage to his new, improved lab. Needless to say, Geralt and Jaskier fought hard, but ultimately, Jaskier was torn away. Geralt was not going to give up. He brought Ciri to Kaer Morhen and over the course of the next few months, Aiden, Yennefer, and the remaining Wolves helped hunt down and plot a raid to get Jaskier back. The crew found themselves at Stygga Castle, and were able to break in, passing many other failed and current experiments on their way. They fished Jaskier out of a cell, looking thin, dirty, and beaten down...
Tumblr media
The problem is, all he remembers is his new purpose of becoming a perfect cat Witcher assassin. He tries to attack Geralt immediately, and had to be restrained to get him out. Even once at Kaer Morhen, his memory does not return, and he only wants to get back to his training/reprograming. He is repulsed by Geralt's affections, though he starts to wonder if he can use them to his advantage...
Tumblr media
I have written Geralt in a lot of different places, but this is legitimately the lowest, and being in that headspace can be challenging. It's worth it though! I'm loving this story and there is more drama to come! As always thank you to @cowboybuttconnoisseur who came up with this angst fest!

dressed elegantly. this will never leave my head. the implications of this.
because geralt and his company, they saddled up, left beauclair, travelled through mountains and frozen blizzards and downpours and muddy sod for two to three months. you need to pack outfits for that. you need to plan your gear.
what was the rest of the company wearing? what did they pack for this long journey? they packed practically, dressed warmly for the frozen journey of january, february, march. geralt wore a wolf-skin cloak, a scarf, a shawl… milva wore a fox-fur kalpak, angoulême wore a hat with a pompom and a sheepskin coat. cahir’s dress isn’t mentioned, but he must have been dressed similarly, because he rubs his hands briskly together and were he not dressed warmly he otherwise would have frozen to death. regis’ dress isn’t mentioned, but it is mentioned that he’s immune to the freezing temperature. so, i mean, it doesn’t matter what he’s wearing in this scene, maybe a regular outfit.
but at stygga. dressed elegantly.
so you’re telling me that. regis packed his things in preparation for their flight from beauclair, went to his quarters after geralt explained to him the satisfactory reasons they were leaving, and went,
“alright, time to prepare for this long and dangerous journey that will conclude in a great clash between our forces and the kidnappers of ciri. the end of our quest. the final journey. and a dangerous road awaits us, with snow still blocking the passes, frost and white all around. a grand fight and conflict awaits us. what gear should i prepare, what should i wear for this expedition, what kinds of clothing should i pack.”
and then he went:
“you know, i want to look fucking good ✨ when we get there 💅🏻🦇”
imagine the final preparation before they approach castle stygga. geralt sees the castle hewn out of the cliffside, effortlessly noticing every detail from far away, seeing like an eagle with his mutated eyes. and like an eagle, compelled to swoop down and snatch vilgefortz like a fish. ordering the company forward, declaring they’ve made it. this is the moment they have all been waiting for. everyone has been waiting such a long time for this. they prepared everything.
they wait until midnight. angoulême eagerly unsheathes and whets her long sabre, swings her axe around with predatory glee. cahir fits the plate armor and winged officer’s helmet he scavenged from a small nilfgaardian dispatch that they ran into extorting caravista for tax. milva tightens the same worn, polished leather bracer that she’s always had on her left arm, and mutters as she fixes her spiralled arrow fletchings over boiling water. geralt, with nothing left to do, paces and breathes, wondering where the hell regis has gone.
just then, regis walks out from behind an outcropping of rock, eyes glinting with cat-like light, in his “elegant” outfit, absolutely slaying that shit, and all his friends look at him absently like. “what the hell are you wearing. where the fuck did you get that. you packed that? you planned your outfit for the final battle, you planned this outfit in advance three months ago?” to which he counters, “well, three months isn’t very long at all,” and they’re like, “this is the preparation you made? we thought you left to do some secret vampire rituals or whatever. or to reckon with yourself for the severe violence we’re about to inflict.” and he’s like “no, i just wanted to make sure i was dressed nicely for the occasion”

I wish we had gotten a bit more insight on how Dandelion felt hearing about the hansa's death at Stygga Castle.
Dandelion splitting from the party felt like such an intense thing. I mean, this is the guy who's been following Geralt to the ends of the earth, he's been with Geralt through everything, he loves Geralt, he's always been there for him. But when they reach Toussaint during Lady of the Lake you see kind of a breaking point for him. You see him start to doubt everything. Start to doubt Geralt. And it's really sad to read!! Geralt, of course, knows this won't be a permanent thing for Dandelion. He's known him too long at this point... but in Dandelion's mind this is permanent. He thinks this is his end, this is where his story draws to a close, saying goodbye to everyone in the hansa
And I just wonder how he actually felt after Geralt and Ciri collected him from Toussaint during his execution. What he was really thinking when Geralt told him everyone had died. It's not like Dandelion could have somehow saved everyone had he gone with them, in all reality he probably would have just died alongside them. But to know that all your friends perished after you made the decision to stay back and let them all go on without you...
I wonder if he felt any sort of survivor's guilt? Or maybe a sense of "I told you so." I mean it must be a pretty shitty thing to know that you're alive because of a selfish choice when all your friends who remained loyal to one the guy holding the party together died.
I don't know. I be thinking about things sometimes.

So I'm currently reading the last Witcher book and I need to rant about it.
Heavy spoilers for the Witcher, Lady of the Lake under the cut:
So I got to the part of the book where Geralt and his company arrive at Stygga castle to rescue Ciri from Vilgefortz. And I'm like, ok someone's gonna die, they're not all gonna make it out alive. And I'm mentally preparing myself for that, as one does.
And then Milva, who is my favourite character in the entire series, dies first!? So I'm sad and shocked but can't react properly because I read on the train on my way to work, so I swallow those feelings and keep reading.
Then - boom - cahir faces fucking bonhart. For a second I delude myself and think "maybe cahir's gonna be the one to beat him" but no. Cahir dies.
It cuts back to Ciri and Angoulême and I have a bad feeling about Angoulême's wound too. I do not even dare to hope this time. Angoulême dies.
So Regis is left. And I'm like, he'll be the one who survives this. Like, he's a vampire, he has some cool abilities, nothing could really harm him so far. And then - you guessed it - HE DIES TOO????
So now no one (!!) from Geralt's company is left. And I'm really sad about this cause I enjoyed the chapters where we got to travel with them so much. And they all grew together and became actual friends and-
So bottom line is Vilgefortz is the root of all evil.
I haven't finished the book completely yet but I'm just hoping no more people die (naive, I know).
