It's hilarious to me that someone actually asked/JRO actually confirmed via word of god that Tarn tortured Pharma while he was at Delphi bc like. Fucking yeah??? How else do you think Pharma went from "for most of his life, he was a good doctor" to stark raving mad? What else did people think Tarn, fanatical Decepticon who leads a group of professional murderers, would do to Pharma, Autobot stationed on DJD territory, to make him comply with the deal?
I get that sometimes people just want confirmation from the author for them to go "no yeah your theories are right" but on the other hand I don't understand asking for word of god confirmation on things that are obviously canon if you just think about it for a little bit

The earlier Grue post has reminded me of an observation I had a while ago but never got around to hammering out- basically no superheroes actually featured in a parahumans story maintain a secret identity in the classic bifurcated sense. There's anonymity, sure, and as seen in the Dauntless interlude there are cover stories that their neighbors hear about their day job, but with the exception of pointed edge cases like Alexandria and Brandish, the professionalization of heroism is near total. None of these people are juggling a day job. Examples of the classic dual identity situation are actually slightly more common among the villains- Purity has a day job as an interior decorator, and Kaiser and Coil are in charge of their respective companies- but of course all of those are kinda "set-your-own-hours" kinds of situations. Kaiser's got people and Coil's literally got a power custom made to grease the wheels on two-timing in that way. The majority are full-time gangsters or mercenaries. Taylor's pre-Leviathan juggling of school and supervillainy is actually the main example of anyone trying to do it and the course that ultimately takes is instructional as to why she's the only one. Taylor mentions that people joke about her iterant teacher Mr. Quinlan secretly being a cape, but a lot of the book is spent quietly putting the torch to the idea that that kind of balance is tenable. Like at a minimum people would notice that you're running off all the time, there's a whole shell-game played with pulling random kids out of class at Arcadia to obfuscate which ones are actually the superheroes.

man some anime onlies in the tag virulently hating Kabru which like yeah he's a very flawed little man who leaves a bad impression but it feels so weird to do it after the episode when he doesn't do anything wrong??? actually does a lot of good and helpful things?? And we also got a glimpse of the reason he hates monsters and is paranoid about the dungeon which is an extremely justified Tragic Backstory Reason?
what are y'all mad about in this episode specifically, was it that he was upset about his friends dying? This is the part where you're supposed to use common sense and realize he wasn't as bad as you thought based on the fishman stuff even if his vibes are still questionable.

See, the reason I know Kabru's party respects him fiercely is this singular scene

because I don't care how much my adoration for him borders on the nigh-fanatical, if I was resurrected twice in the span of a single trip and knew we were broke and my dear leader looked at me with those blue eyes and went "but Nyx, we'll be the same as them if we took their money!" despite the referred to 'them' trying to kill us for profit, I'd show this dungeon a REAL (sea) serpent-

I’m glad people are enjoying the Fionil post but I do want to say just for my own peace of mind that I don’t think it’s actually like incredible nuanced amazing writing to detail out a side character’s nuanced backstory in a separate, supplementary release.
The fact that those details show through in the manga is cool and shows how much care Ryoko Kui seems to have for her characters, but it’s more like a “she puts a lot of thought into her blorbos” thing than a “she’s an amazing writer & dunmeshi is an incredible work of perfectly detailed fiction.” Thing.
She is and it (often) is, but that’s for other reasons. Fionil is just fun.

dunmesh backstories are so funny bc you have senshi who has lived through the plot of an art-house psychological horror film, and still is to an extent, next to chilchuck who's backstory feels like it'd fit right into like. it's always sunny or shameless
