found a homestuck ship tierlist maker. decided to ignore the ship aspect and instead rank it based on what character relationships i think are most important to my reading of homestuck. i ALREADY dont stand by this tbh i think roxy and dirks relationship should be higher as should eridan and feferi, and i have no idea of why i ended up with damara and meenah AS high as they are, etc. but its at least an idea i guess. i will elaborate if anyone asks why i put stuff where it is

i keep saying this but i dont think ive ever put this in a post so im just chucking this into my blog before i forget: i think the fundamental difference between homestuck and the epilogues is that homestuck is an improv comedy that develops a serious story as part of the joke, while the epilogues are a serious story that happens to be partially constructed with jokes

which isnt to say the story of homestuck isnt good or well written, but like... in homestuck, there is no difference between narrative foreshadowing and brick jokes, they're the same thing. there is no point trying to distinguish between what is silly pointless jokey bullshit and what is The Plot (tm), they are the same thing with no distinction. in fact half the serious story beats are itself fueled by the joke of having pointless jokey bullshit actually turn out to be deadly serious. this isn't even a subversive thing in homestuck, it's just how homestuck's story operates. its narrative retroactively endows everything about itself with both weight and levity with the same brush

i mean, the final list of bad guys who are framed as pretty serious threaths on a story level include three different versions of someone's OC that became a fan favorite in hussie's commission work, a green skull monster based on one troll who demanded hussie draw explicit muppet art in his forums once, and Betty Crocker

the epilogues on the other hand feel like they're constructed to be a story first and foremost. there are funny things in there and brick jokes that return, but for the most part it feels like everything called back upon is solely concerned with the weight and not the levity of homestuck's plotified jokes and jokeified plot beats. like the jokes aren't there because that's what homestuck IS, but because it's what homestuck is supposed to be and so you just kinda have to use the materials presented

the villains of the epilogues are all major singular characters whose trajectories downwards track in the sense that you CAN build them perfectly well with the materials given in homestuck, in terms of story and character and themes, but it all feels off regardless BECAUSE of how seriously the story takes itself

#i think this change is part of the point of the epilogues even but i dont even know if it works or not #like rn i think the fact that its painful to read and jarring because of this shift is a good thing the story does interesting stuff with #but most of the time i find it pretentious and not really worth its own effort trying to justify its tone #so who knows. but i wanted to throw it out there #homestuck #sushi original #sushi talks #what the fuck was my tag anyways i forget
