Day 4: Poetry & Birdsong | Taniquetil
Tumblr media
A bit of sadness and ominous foreshadowing, how about that?
This can be read as a direct sequel to the Day 3 drabble <3
Lots of love from me!
Words: 100
Characters: Finwë & Fëanor, Manwë
Warnings: Doom about to strike
Tumblr media
“Listen!” Finwë whispered, holding his young son’s hand firmly ensconced in his own. “Do you hear the ephemeral poems of love and life the wind pens into the ever-shifting sky?”
He remembered the solemn silence of his earliest days and thus relished the cryptic but deeply touching messages of wisdom Manwë graciously sent down from Taniquetil on invisible wings.
“Birdsong?” Curufinwë scoffed disdainfully. “How boring!”
Helpless in the face of the overwhelming anger of his darling half-orphan, Finwë shrugged uncomfortably.
“May you come to cherish even these tiniest of gifts,” he cautioned. “May the quietude of loneliness never assail you.”

For today’s topic of Manwë Week, some HCs about Taniquetil (and Ilmarin, specifically):
- The palace complex is huge. It houses a great number of permanent residents (Manwë, Varda, their Maiar) and also has many rooms set apart for visitors.
- Ilmarin is not just the seat of the king; it also functions as a centre of learning, something akin to a university but with less of a hierarchical power structure. As such, it houses a renowned library, where one can find not only Ainur and Elven works, but also a selection of Mannish literature.
- The throne room is an incredibly majestic sight: the high ceiling reflects the ever-changing sky; the long, marble pillars seem almost transparent; the walls feature detailed mosaics representing the most important events in the history of Arda (among the various scenes, a portrait of Melkor can still be spotted, unscathed and unharmed). Manwë’s and Varda’s thrones are framed by lifelike sculptures of the Two Trees.
- Ilmarin’s many windows are huge and generally remain open, so the winds can easily traverse through the entire complex and birds can flutter inside and out. (The temperature inside the palace is agreeable, though; Manwë makes sure that it doesn’t become too cold for his visitors.)
- The palace’s innumerable balconies provide people with amazing panoramic views of the entirety of Aman.

I have literally nothing to back me up here except Vibes, but in my heart I know whenever very, very, very, very baby Maglor found out Maedhros wasn't Literally Omnipotent he just had to start bawling as he had to reorient his entire world around this very upsetting discovery. Maedhros can't reach a note that isn't actually possible for anything but seagulls to reach? Cause for mourning. Maedhros can't make sense of the two word nonsense sentence Maglor is saying? A tragedy of epic proportions. Maedhros can't physically fetch stars for him? However shall he survive this grief!

Quote
Varda looked down from Taniquetil, and beheld the Shadow soaring up in sudden towers of gloom; Valmar had foundered in a deep sea of night. Soon the Holy Mountain stood alone, a last island in a world that was drowned. All song ceased. There was silence in Valinor, and no sound could be heard, save only from afar there came on the wind through the pass of the mountains the wailing of the Teleri like the cold cry of gulls. For it blew chill from the East in that hour, and the vast shadows of the sea were rolled against the walls of the shore.

At one point someone (curumo) got Aiwendil absolutely smashed and then someone else (olorin) bet he probably couldn't shape this really cool animal/plant while the valar were distracted (by mairon and eonwe), and that's why middle earth animals can do weird things like Beorn's dogs walking on their hind legs all the time .

Glorfindel Week Day 1: Valinor | Childhood | Family
Little Glorfindel|Laurefindele with his father Ingil (Ingwion) on the mountaincastle of Taniquetil where many Vanyar live, where Glorfindels grandfather Ingwe lives. He grows up with wind in his hair and the clear voices of his people around him, with a loving family that shelters him, until his own ambitions carry him away to Tirion, where his mother Findis is from, and where his aunt Elenwe lives.

🍁?
Thanks for the ask, @squirrelwrangler! 💗
Mmm, let me see. I once saw someone suggest that there must be an easier, faster way to get to Ilmarin than to climb the highest mountain of the world, which led me to think about portals, magical doors, that kind of thing. I HC that there are several such portals strewn across Aman, most of them in and around Valmar, some in Tirion, some in Alqualondë… At the same time, since the Elves quite literally live forever, they have ample time to make the journey physically, and I think there is also a bit of a religious, ritualistic aspect to climbing Taniquetil, like a pilgrimage of sorts.
On a different note, Ilmarin not just functions as a political centre, home of the King and Queen of Arda, but also as a seat of learning. The palace houses the biggest library in Aman, bringing together scholars from the different tribes.
