Finally managed to get my Inktober Rite of Spring drawings all scanned !
These drawings are based on still or video images of the Pina Bausch choreographed ballet Le Sacre du Primtemps. I have tried to capture the amazing, visceral dancing and the sense of Stravinsky's remarkable score.

Ending the year by going back to theatre, for the first time since the year of the plague. It was an incredible ride with my long time friend and choreographer Mihyun Ko and all the amazing crew of dance and music. Also thank you to the audience that filled the theatre and gave us so much support.
24 Hours is a piece about time and labour under late stage capitalism, and what it does to us as bodies.
We hope we can present it again next year.

"Repetition is not repetition. The same action makes you feel something completely different by the end.
It is almost unimportant whether a work finds an understanding audience. One has to do it because one believes that it is the right thing to do. We are not only here to please, we cannot help challenging the spectator."

So ... Here is my Rite of Spring Inktober. If you have not been following my posts I have used reference from stills and YouTube video of performances the Pina Bausch choreographed ballet. I find this ballet utterly visceral, terrifying, and like a terrible mirror held up to who we are. In short, I love everything about it. Last, the music. It is hard to believe it is over 120 years old. It still sounds remarkable and I tried to capture it's angular madness in my drawings. I used pen and ink, charcoal, a copic here and there and screentone. The red dress is watercolour.
I finished early. Mad Halloween weekend and I am not gonna have time and I am rubbish at patience.

"I became calmer and calmer and simply kept standing… I realised that in extremely difficult situations a great calm overcame me, and I could draw power from the difficulties. An ability in which I have learnt to trust."
- Pina Bausch
Pina Bausch was born 1940 in Solingen and died 2009 in Wuppertal. She received her dance training at the Folkwang School in Essen under Kurt Jooss, where she achieved technical excellence. Soon after the director of Wuppertal's theatres, Arno Wüstenhöfer, engaged her as choreographer, from autumn 1973, she renamed the ensemble the Tanztheater Wuppertal. Under this name, although controversial at the beginning, the company gradually achieved international recognition. Its combination of poetic and everyday elements influenced the international development of dance decisively. Awarded some of the greatest prizes and honours world-wide, Pina Bausch is one of the most significant choreographers of our time.
