However, we can alter how people see us. We can therefore alter how we present our gender by, say, cutting our hair, wearing a binder to compress our chest, and so on. These actions change other's perception of us, and accordingly, their perception of our gender.

Now, as I said before, sexuality is determined by social perceptions. Here's the thing. We don't know what sex someone is inherently. It's just not something we can know; no one has magnifying-glass eyes that can see chromosomes in the body on the fly. All we can know is how someone presents themselves. Therefore, if someone presents as a woman, a lesbian isn't going to have zero attraction to them until they hold up their birth certificate that says they're AFAB—they're going to see a hot woman and go "Damn, she's hot! I want to date her!"

Similarly, if you see two female-presenting people kissing, you're naturally going to assume it's probably two women kissing, and then you're going to assume they're lesbians. You're not going to demand to see proof they're AFAB before assuming this.

The other option here is that trans men are, in fact, men, which means that trans women are, in fact, women, because you're admitting that you can transition from male to female, which logically means you can transition from female to male. I originally had problems with Xvfb but after adding the path to the environment of the service file it was resolved. I am now having a similar issue with google-chrome not executing.

I've tried adding path to environment, and changing permissions on files and folders.

.....So I wanna talk about Jack Drake’s potential for physical abuse. 

Because every time I bring up abuse and Tim’s parents someone misunderstands me and gets pissy, I will state upfront and for the record: Jack Drake is abusive, and it doesn’t have to be physical abuse to be abuse. I’m also, like, 85% sure Jack wasn’t intended to be physically abusive in the comics. He is, regardless, incredibly emotionally abusive. 

With that out of the way, I want to talk about the potential for Jack to be a physical abuser because there’s just... a few... weird scenes. And I wanna talk about them, because they live rent free in my brain.

Discussion under the cut, because some of the comic images of Jack acting violently are potentially triggering for some people. So like... trigger warning for child abuse.

So... there are three scenes that I find suspect. 

The first one is... well, most of you probably know what I’m thinking of. 

In Robin #45, a couple floppies after Tim’s girlfriend at the time, Ariana, propositions Tim and they get caught hugging and kissing with Ari in a sexy nightgown, Jack Drake finally comes home from overseas because Ariana’s guardian called his “service” to inform him their kids were... intimately involved. It’s unclear if the adults think they had sex or were going to have sex, because they talk around the topic, but in a later comic Jack’s girlfriend Dana is worried whether Tim is still a virgin or not. Jack will not listen to Tim’s side of the story and sends him to his room. 

I didn’t notice it my first read through, but it kinda... primes the audience to think about parental violence by having Mrs. Mac bring up corporal punishment. 

While Tim is watching a news story about a hostage situation, Dana comes in to talk to Tim first. Tim is distracted, but talks to Dana, and she doesn’t seem to mind that Tim is still half watching the news report. I won’t get into Dana’s brand of parenting except to note that it’s in stark contrast to Jack’s this floppy and also to make a note of the startle lines drawn by Tim when she reaches out to touch him. I’m not sure what to make of them, if he’s just surprised she’s on his side or if it’s meant to be a flinch... I probably wouldn’t have thought twice about them if not for what’s coming next. 

Yeah... we’re talking about The Scene. Presented in full: 

As the hostage situation escalates, Jack comes in to talk to Tim. And for as much as Jack initially seems to be saying the right things... it is... remarkable how quickly he flies into the rage because his son is distracted by a news story. Especially when you compare him to Dana, who had a full and meaningful conversation with Tim while he was still distracted by the same news story. 

...I am of two minds about this scene. 

Option A) Based on Tim’s seemingly shocked expressions and body language, and Jack’s previous interactions with Tim, none of which appeared violent, this instance of pre-battery abuse is an escalation. 

Option B) Based on Tim’s internal dialog, the way he registers Jack’s anger immediately as a major problem (”uh-oh”) and the seemingly calm reaction to his dad flying off the handle (”at least he left the computer”), Jack has done something like this before. Destruction of property in a fit of rage isn’t abnormal behavior from him. 

...So anyway. The next scene I wanna talk about is from Robin #116. 

Tim has been away for a few days doing Robin stuff while his father was in a depressive episode after they lost their family business and dropped an economic bracket. Honestly, the relief in Tim’s eyes when he sees his dad walking around and wearing day clothes is extremely well-drawn. 

Jack is saying all the right things, and then... then Tim makes this one little comment: “I was going to come in there and knock some sense into you... but you’re still bigger than me...” 

What the fuck does that mean, Tim? 

It’s a joke. He’s teasing his dad to break the tension, if it was in a vacuum, I wouldn’t have thought anything of it. It’s not even the “knock some sense into you” line, that’s a common thing people say. 

It’s the “you’re still bigger than me” that fills my stomach with fucking dread. 

Which brings me to Robin #125.

Jack finds out Tim is Robin. He goes to Wayne Manor carrying a gun and threatens Bruce’s life to “give back his son.” Already primed to view Jack as capable of violence. 

When Tim arrives, he and Jack get into an argument where Tim tries to put his foot down - he’s found his purpose, Jack can’t stop him, he’s going to keep being Robin whether he likes it or not. When Jack pulls the “you’re just a kid” argument, Tim actually reveals something interesting about their family history that must’ve played into why Tim is so adamant that being a teen hero is aspirational: his grandfather joined the military at 15, something Jack apparently brags about quite often. 

And then Jack brings up a new... Different topic. Child abuse. 

And... and... Tim starts saying that’s “no longer a possibility” and talking about how he can defend himself now. 

?????????

And when Bruce becomes ALARMED, Tim IMMEDIATELY backs down, saying it was a... “joke.” 

....Like, even including the scene of Jack ripping the fucking TV out of the wall, this is the scene that screams “Something Happened.” 

The throw away line from Robin 116 and this scene from Robin 125 have big Jack Used To Hit Tim When He Was Younger vibes. There’s also a sense that... Tim is doing some kinda mental gymnastics over it. 

These scenes add extra possibilities to Jack and Tim’s potential history. 

A) Jack used to hit Tim when he was younger, perhaps in a manner Jack would consider “spanking,” but as Tim got older and social norms changed, he stopped. 

B) Jack never hit Tim, but made is somehow clear he wanted to: verbally, raising hands without striking, and/or breaking objects/punching walls. 

C) Jack’s never done this in Tim’s early childhood, but Robin #45 was an escalation to breaking objects that has given Tim anxiety about the threat of physical abuse. 

I find all three options... equally possible. As for why Tim doesn’t saying anything about it... growing up, my dad was Jack Drake Option B: yelling, broken objects, raised hands. The first time I remember my father getting so pissed off he “almost hit me” I was about... three or four years old. Terrible early memory to internalize for the rest of your life. And like... I was AWARE of it... but I’d just... forget about it, for long periods of time. Years. Never told my mother about it until this year, at 27 years old, even after she saw him do it again when I was a teenager. Honestly, I kinda forgot about it entirely when I was in college... but I did find out I had a panic response to criticism and anger. My girlfriend at the time had a bit of a temper, and I would just shut down when she got mad; she tried to comfort me and get me to explain why my reaction was so strong... and I had no idea. I can only assume that’s what people mean when they say you’ve “blocked out” a memory. By the time I was able to interrogate my own feelings and remember what happened to me... I didn’t have the language to explain it. And it took me a long time to accept that the word “abuse” applied to my situation. 

“Oh, yeah, I know x, y, z is abuse, but like, that doesn’t apply to me, it didn’t count.” is... really common, as I understand it. 

....So, anyway. While canonically Tim’s abuse is only ever overtly presented as non-physical, I do think there’s a potential to explore that avenue with Jack while saying consistent with his character - either in the past or as an escalation. And I think that has the potential to be interesting, especially if Tim is playing off other characters who are more conscious of their own history with abuse.

When I read F&B Vol I, the part where Rhaenyra ordered for Neetles' execution was written like it was something completely villainous thing for Rhaenyra to do and what happens afterwards was also used to vilify Rhaenyra.

But I think that it was a pretty normal action for Rhaenyra to take. As in, if it were a king who found out his wife was cheating on him, he'd definitely order the execution of the other guy, especially if it was a guy working under him and directly sworn to him in which case, it would be treated like the treason of the highest degree, and also on top of that, punish his wife. In that case, everyone would take the king's side. (Take for instance, how Jaehaerys punished the guys who slept with his daughter. Also punished his daughter. And it was treated as a right thing to do.) But in Rhaenyra’s case, that part was completely used to vilify her, as if it was not something normal in asoiaf feudal society. Was it wrong to order Neetles' execution? Yep, definitely. It was not right. Was it smart? No, it wasn't. It, in fact, cost her a dragonrider. She could've maybe waited until the end of the war to decide on the matter. I am not even actually sure what the right course of action should be. On one hand, it cost her a dragonrider, and on the other hand, she cannot just let such a thing to go, not only as a wife but also as a queen. However, it seemed right to Rhaenyra though. Also, again, it was the course of action a king would take (and everyone would say he's right). So, why not a queen regnant? And why is it such a villainous thing to do in the case of a queen? Is it because she's a woman? (Also, it's not like Rhaenyra was not letting Daemon keep Mysaria as his paramour but then drew the line on Neetles.)

And also, the whole point of the character Neetles seemed like she was only there for this plot. Her character is pretty much defined for her relationship with Daemon and how it was used to vilify Rhaenyra (I HATED that). At least, it seemed to me that way. She was very obviously just a plot device. I think she had the potential to be more than that but GRRM did her dirty.

In fact, how, for the sake of the old gods and the new, could literal adults like Corlys and Rhaenyra let Jace carry out his Sowing of Dragonseeds or whatever plan? I love you, Jace, but wtaf was that? Definitely not a good decision for a would be king. It also seemed abnormal to me that Targaryens who never even let very very minor houses, like the Velaryons, have dragons pre-doom and then both pre-conquest and after conquest, did not again let any other house have dragons until Rhaenys did with the Velaryons but then again they were family, so it was okay, but then let random dudes take their dragons? I mean, wtf George? It was so awfully written for the sake of the plot. I am glad that you won't write that plot in your fic. (Also, why did they not make Rhaena bond with either Vermithor or Silverwing if they needed more dragons and dragonriders? Vermithor was the second most dangerous dragon living at the time. Rhaena could've bonded with him. Make sense, George!)

Also, that Mootons being super concerned that they are asked to execute Neetles, that they would break the laws of the guest rights🙄 Nah, somehow I don't buy that. If Neetles was not a dragonrider and did not have Daemon who would probably have burned the Mootons and their home on Caraxes if they dared to kill Neetles, they definitely would not have hesitated to carry out the execution of a common girl like Neetles. Yet another thing used to vilify Rhaenyra. Or is it because I'm so enraged with the Neetles plot, that I think so?

P. S. This idea came to me when I was reminded of Braime. And honestly both Braime and Daemon/Neetles seems awfully like the trope of a bad guy falling in love with a "good woman" and becoming a better man and leaving the "bad woman" who was a "bad influence" behind for her. (I know Daemon didn't leave Rhaenyra and in fact, died for her, but it still felt about partially??? like that trope??? As in, an incomplete version of it, I suppose.)

First a huge apology for the delay, and let me just say when I read your ask my mind was f_cking blown.

You are so absolutely right and actually this forced me to pause and to look at my own biases and sexism when judging Rhaenyra's actions against Nettles. Yes, I have them. I am human. I too am influenced by the society I live on, and I was forced to face some uncomfortable truths.

As you say and well, people - myself included - wouldn't bat an eye if the king sentenced his wife's lover to death. We would just call it a day and say "Well it is what it is". And the exact same happened with Jaehaerys. He wanted justice for his daughter being seduced aka sleeping with dudes, so he took it upon himself to challenge one of them (one of the three lol) and kill him. Yet never is this action of his portraited as him doing something villainous. Or does someone judge him for it. Actually it’s shown as quite heroic and a #YESKING #BADASS moment.

With Rhaenyra and Nettles it's a completely different matter. It's always presented as something to show how cruel she was, when in fact, as you point out, she was the Queen and her consort had taken this other woman as a lover and possibly could impregnate her. In turn this could create complications for her own children. Not to mention what it would do to how people saw her, maybe even how other men saw their wives.

I mean if it was fine for the Queen's husband to openly cheat on her and have bastard children with someone else, what would stop any other idiot for doing the same to their own wife openly and rub it on her face? Wives these who could not dream to be more powerful than their husbands - unlike a Queen and her Consort?

Another funny thing also in this situation would be to compare how Rhaenyra's jealously is portraited to how Rhaenys's jealously is portraited.

So, we are told that Rhaenys had the "fiery temperament of a Targaryen" and that was why Corlys kept Addam and Alyn (and Marilda) away from her knowledge - I will let y'all decide what she would have done if she had found out. My suggestion is she might very well take a big fat page out of Rhaenyra's book. Rhaenyra, on the other hand, when she finds out Daemon betrayed her, is portraited as being cruel, irrational, and almost stupid in her actions. 

Tell me there is an anti-Rhaenyra agenda without telling me there is an anti-Rhaenyra agenda.

Now, if I think this was made in purpose by George? Maybe I have too little faith on him, but I don’t think he realized the huge double standard he created. And no I don’t think he particularly likes Rhaenyra no. 

As for Nettles’s age that’s just another funny moment considering that if she was 16 or 17, by Westeros’s own standards she was a woman grown. Was she a 16 or 17 year old boy sleeping with the queen people would be shouting for his head. So again #sexism #rhaenyraiscruel 

I have said it once and I will again. The lesson we learn from Rhaenyra is not that she was as bad as any man before her, this is what the narrator wants you to think, but this is not the take home message, the real take home message is that her biggest crime was not having a d:ck and instead having a vag:na, because turn Rhaenyra into a man and no one would bat a freaking eye at anything she did. No. One. Would. Care. Or. Compare. Her. To. Maegor. 

If you can’t see the sexism you really should educate yourself and give Fire and Blood another read.

About the dragonseeds, yes. The idea was so terrible I am embarrassed by the people involved. If I had a better solution? I wouldn’t have one no. But that’s like me seeing a foot bleeding and hearing someone say it would be nice to cut a toe. I might not know what to do to cure the foot but I know cutting the toe isn’t it.

As for your PS I several things. While people and “intellectuals” do try to make it seem like Jaime and Cersei are some sort of Daemon and Rhaenyra (lol nice try Lannister stans, do keep trying) they aren’t and they have very little if anything in common. There was someone who corrupted the other but actually it was Jaime/Rhaenyra who was corrupted (in a way) by Cersei/Daemon. The latter - Daemon/Cersei - were also much more dark in the black-to-white spectrum than Rhaenyra/Jaime - do remember, people, who the idea of a son for a son came from, spoiler: not Rhaenyra, she wanted to give up. Follow me for more obvious info you should have taken out of Fire and Blood.

Rhaenyra and Cersei have much more anti-parallels than parallels between them - I would be more than glad to list the obvious parallels and very obvious anti-parallels - and one of the crucial difference between them was that Cersei used men, Rhaenyra was used by men be that for her beauty or her position. Another crucial anti-parallel they have was that Jaime left Cersei (seems to have at least), Daemon directly or indirectly died for Rhaenyra’s cause (even if she thought he had left her and betrayed her). And if you have any doubt about the latter, do consider what would have happened to Rhaenyra and Aegon III had Aemond survived. You’re welcome. Follow me for more obvious thoughts you should have! 

Lastly, my thoughts on Nettles are that she could have been a very interesting character on her own. There’s mystery to her. There seems to be an actual personality, which is so much more than what can be said about so many other female characters in Fire and Blood. In the end though, I think all her potential is thrown under the bus and clouded by her relationship with Daemon. If she was his daughter, there’s potential there for some genuine good, for something really interesting to take place. Definitely a big twist of sorts and an opportunity to explore Daemon as a parent, and how he might have felt about his children.

If she was his lover (I am personally more sold on this one) not sure if George was trying to have a “good woman turn a bad man good”. I would hope he has better knowledge of the human heart than this. Knowledge enough to know that no woman can change a man, and that what he wrote (if it was intended to be romantic) between Daemon and Nettles was a very powerful man with a midlife crisis taking advantage of a woman much younger than him - as he had so many times before - and recreating the relationship he once had with another younger woman he took advantage of - Rhaenyra - trying to once again have a woman think him a god and worshiping the ground he walked on.

My ACOSF Review (2/5 Stars)

Please respect my opinions. Not everything I say will be praiseful or nice. While I liked a lot of this book, a lot of it frustrated and bothered me. 

This review contains spoilers. Read at your own risk. 

This review will be more of an overall impression, and I will get more in depth about certain characters in future posts. 

I eventually got into the plot of the book, but I don’t think it was as great or creative as it could’ve been. I feel like SJM recycled ideas she’s already used to create the storyline. A quest to find a magic object that can stop a war and save the world? That sentence applies to both ACOWAR and ACOSF. It’s even more disappointing when you know there were other routes the plot could’ve taken but were eventually scratched. It was the perfect set up for an Illyrian mountain setting, it was written in canon, and, unsurprisingly, SJM retconned and changed it. 

The Valkyrie plot was cool, if a bit forced and out of place. Nesta barely starts training, and all of a sudden she wants to recreate a powerful band of female warriors that we’ve never heard of in the context of this world? Honestly, it feels like SJM watched Thor: Ragnarok, and was like, “Yes, that’s what I’m gonna do.” I thought Helions winged horses would come into play with that, but I guess we’ll have to see.

I thought the Blood Rite plot was gone, but we got it in the end, even though it was rushed. The most beautiful parts of the book happened during the Rite, so I’m glad we got to see those.

The ending of Briallyn was so swift I literally had to go back a page to make sure I read it right. Literally one page, and she’s killed. I expected more. I can’t say I'm surprised by how rushed her death was when I knew the Feysand trouble was approaching, and the number of pages left was getting smaller. There wasn’t a doubt in my mind that SJM would save Rhys, Feyre, and their baby. Out of the entire ensemble in Kingdom of Ash, she only had the heart to kill Gavriel, who wasn’t too much of a main character. There was no way in hell she would do that to Feysand. 

I’m sorry, but I do not like the name Nyx. Imagine calling someone Nyx? Did she originally have it as Nick, but just needed to put an X? My eyes were rolling so hard when I read it. Just put an ‘O’ in front of it and end our misery, though I still would’ve rolled my eyes at that name too. The name just reminds me of all the blogger moms who put X’s in their child’s names for dramatic effect that ends up looking like they can’t spell.

I also didn’t appreciate the out of touch colloquialisms in this book either. Prythian doesn’t have a name for anxiety, depression, or PTSD, but they know what lactic acid means?

The amount of sex in this book was something we had been warned to expect, and I think due to the fastness of me reading this book (finished in two sittings), it made it feel like the sex was happening every other page, which it basically was. I’m not going to be mad though because a) it was well written, b) I didn’t feel like it harmed the plot too much, and c) this is the only Nessian smut we’re going to see in canon. But that threesome line with Az. . . y'all know which one I’m talking about. . . the one with the details about certain positions. . .  chile um anyways let’s move on. 

I called it months ago that Emerie would either be Mor or Azriel’s love interest, and looks like it’s going to be Mor. SJM’s writing is fairly predictable, especially when it comes to romantic ships, and she couldn’t have been more obvious about the two of them. I will write about Gwyn and Azriel in Azriel’s chapter review (cause that monstrosity needs a post of its own).

Now about Nesta’s healing arc. Some of it was satisfying and others were saddening. I’m happy that Nesta was able to find purpose in her life, and not believe herself to be worthless or pathetic, but strong and powerful. I’m happy she found Gwynn and Emerie; I love their friendship. I love how they stuck by each other no matter what, and saw the good and potential in one another.

However, even by the end of the book, Nesta still thinks herself as undeserving. Of Cassian, of love. She knows she has it, and she's so grateful for it, but she still believes she is undeserving of it, that Cassian is just so much better than her. A part of learning to love and live with yourself is knowing what you deserve, so why SJM took that from her character, I don’t know. I was continuously disappointed when said she was undeserving of anything, even after she had learned and grown from her mistakes. 

Maybe SJM thinks the belief of being undeserving of one's partner is romantic. I’m telling you now, it’s not. All that does is give unnecessary power to a person you believe you are undeserving of, and this leads to unequal power dynamics in a relationship. Rhys was the exact same with Feyre, so I’m guessing it's a theme.

Speaking of romantic themes, the repetition of the “your mine-im yours” line in this book was nauseating. Your going to make Nesta say the exact same thing her sister said when they had sex? Is there nothing else SJM could’ve come up with? It’s just so weird. And I swear to god if I see Elain do the same thing I’m gonna vomit. 

Nesta apologized to Cassian about what she said to him on Solstice in ACOFAS as if he never called her unlovable. As if he never said he didn’t understand why her sisters love her. He never apologized for that. There was so much apologizing from Nesta to Cassian about her calling him a brute, as if Cassian didn’t say he was “shackled” to her after she clearly explained how she feared she would lose her humanity if she accepted the word mate. Not if she accepted him, but the word. 

For Cassian to routinely tell Nesta to, “shut her fucking mouth,” when she used some attitude against Rhys was comical. Rhys has been bad mouthing and disrespecting Nesta this whole time, and when she shows some warranted attitude in return (not even an insult), Cassian rips into her. It doesn’t matter what he did for you, babe. Not everyone has the same experience with Rhys, so Cassian getting angry when Nesta showing anger at the way she was being treated was wrong. Her experience with him does not become invalidated just because Cassian has a good relationship with him.

There wasn’t a character arc for Cassian, which was one of the most disappointing parts of the book. He thinks of himself as inferior and undeserving as well, and by the end of the book it’s not even clear if that stance has changed. We saw him grow into the courtier persona in the meeting with Eris when Tamlin shows up, but we never see it again. I know there were instances in which he stood up for Nesta, but he also very quicky after that became silent in other moments when they were insulting her. The next book isn’t in his pov, but I’m hoping we see him become more confident in himself and make a firmer stance to protect Nesta (although I doubt he’ll need to seeing as how Rhys kisses the ground she walks on now).

Now onto Nesta’s apologies to the IC. I think Nesta apologizing to Feyre was expected, and I’m glad the sisters had that moment. I am, however, upset that there was never a moment where all the sisters sat down, and hashed it out. Talked about what they’d been through, how it affected them, and how it affected their feelings toward each other. After everything that happened between Nesta and Elain, all that hurt, you’re telling me all it took was Nesta to make Elain laugh by saying “fuck you,” and we’re good? It’s lazy writing. 

Elain telling Nesta that she only cared about how her trauma affected her did not sit right with me. Nesta sat by Elain’s side for weeks when she was in the thick of her struggles, and refused to leave her alone for fear that her struggles would eat her up alive. She constantly looked for anything that could help her sister, and never left her unprotected. Nesta and Elain didn’t communicate after the war, for reasons that we now know was because of Nesta’s guilt for Elain being kidnapped. It is not abnormal when a family member has been traumatized by things that have happened to another family member. That’s expected. Ask any family who has lost a child or had a relative go through something horrible.

Elain is acting as if Nesta has only ever been concerned with herself when she’s spent her entire life concerned with Elain. I made a post long ago about how the IC only wanted Nesta to heal for their sake rather than her sake, and there’s so much more evidence for that than for Elain. Elain’s healing process was able to be understood and encouraged by the IC, whereas they had no idea what to do with Nesta. So for Elain to come at Nesta for not caring about her trauma, a second after Nesta was trying to protect her from further trauma by telling her she didn't want her seering for the Trove, was unwarranted.

Speaking about Elain looking for the Trove, what happened there? Elain had this whole speech where she said she wanted to do something and no one could stop her and then we just. . . don’t hear anything about it again? SJM had a perfect opportunity to do something powerful with Elain there, and completely threw it away. 

Nesta’s apology to Amren was extreme, dramatic, and honestly, unnecessary. Amren called Nesta a “pathetic waste of life,” constantly demeaned and degraded her anytime her name was mentioned, and said she did all this because Nesta used her as a shield against her problems and the IC. Seriously? Nesta using Amren as a shield does not warrant that kind of verbal abuse. It doesn't make her a pathetic waste of life. Amren’s been alive for how long? And reacts like that to an obvious side effect of extreme trauma? No ma'am. Nesta getting on her damn knees was too much, and obviously just another moment, like a lot of moments, that SJM felt the need to make dramatic. And then having the audacity to let Amren say to Nesta that, “the struggle with the darkness is worth it,” when she was one of those people who contributed to that darkness is disgusting.

I didn’t like Rhys at all in this book. Even after he saw inside Nesta’s mind about her experience in the cauldron, he was still wary and rude with her. Literally anytime Nesta showed that she was changing, Rhys didn’t change anything about his attitude or behavior towards her. A moment of regret, and then he’s back to being arrogant ass Rhys. Him not telling Feyre about the baby was also extremely stupid. It’s her body, her life, her baby’s life, his life, and she had a right to know what was happening. Not telling her because you didn’t want her to be “upset,” is a dumb excuse. I thought you always promised to let her make her own decisions, Rhys? What happened to that promise? The one that was a hell of a lot better than the stupid bargain ya’ll made? Though Nesta told her out of anger, good on her for telling her sister. Should’ve happened way sooner. His apology to Nesta was the only one that warranted the dramatics. That is what you get on your knees for.

That whole scene about him becoming High King had me throwing the book. Amren telling Rhys that the swords were some sort of mother-mary-cauldron-blessed-hallelujah sign that he was supposed to be High King had me fuming. It’s Nesta’s power. It’s Nesta’s sword. That should have never been a discussion. Not everything is for Rhys. These people are so blinded by their love for him they can’t even see how arrogant he is. To write Nesta giving back Ataraxia made me so angry after we just had a whole moment where we find out it means inner peace. I just hope that all of this is not foreshadowing Rhys becoming High King. I know you love him Sarah, but please don’t.

All in all, this book wasn’t too bad. There were some great moments and some bad moments. I think SJM’s biggest issue in her writing is that she doesn’t outline, or at least doesn't seem to outline, not thoroughly. I feel like she uses plot devices willy nilly whenever it’s the easiest solution. There was never a moment where I said, “that was clever!” A lot of it was cool, but not clever. Not creative. She also has a tendency to write very dramatically, in staccato type sentences where everything is made into a big moment, which bugs me a lot. 

I love Nesta. She’s still my fav, and will probably always be my fav. This book doesn’t change that, and as you can tell in my review, most of the issues I had weren’t with her behavior, but with the behavior of other characters. I still love Cassian, even though he made me want to rip my hair out sometimes.

Will I read the next books? Probably. I can’t seem to stay away from these characters or these books, so kudos to SJM for writing them. I know a majority of people have given this book 4 or 5 stars, but I can’t bring myself to give it more than 2/5.

The Mount Teaser

Warnings: Swearing, Typos

A/N: so this is the first little teaser for a small probably two part for the Cavillry School Writing Challenge. My teacher is August Walker as Truant officer. i hope you all enjoy. XXX

Please ignore any typo’s this is unbeta’d.  

You frowned at all the girls around you. All tittering and giggleing like children. Most younger than you. Stupid children. But each a terror in her own right other wise she wouldnt be here. You hated this place already, the garish pink and peach cheque short skirt and white blouse with a bow around the neck, even in year thriteen-sixth form you were required to be in uniform. Ugh. Mount Ephrame academy was a a strange institution. A huge 100 acre plot in the countryside huge caslte like building no not like hogwarts...Think Balmoral or somthing like that. Some gothic Victorian structure with almost everything you could think of dotted around the grounds stables, pool, walled garden, cloisters a fucking orangey even a small bloody lake! It was insane here once stepping out of the car you'd gone cold. Houston we have a problem! A big fucking problem! It was remote and a whole different world you felt it in the air as you'd entered the building lile you were cut off from the world. But if the ten foot grey stone wall that encompasses the grounds was anything to go by. You were. On the one hand it was an all girls boarding school. On the other? A prison. Its where the delinquents were sent. You go to a young offenders unit or if your bad enough or 'salvagable' your sent here if theres any space. It was unnerving. It pitches itself as an 'institution of learning, growth and reform' you can find yourself here from the age of eleven to twenty one the curriculum covers from your year seven SATS through gsce and higher education even some degrees!  Once you are here you are trapt untill you get the go ahead from principal Cavill untill you prove your 'good and well mannered and will contributeto society'. Your trapped despite your age, your classed as a ward of the 'school' untill he says you can leave. You thought it was illegal but no in actual fact it was like prison. Catch you teach and mold you untill you can become a functioning member of society. The school itself had a reputation of being effective but no one knows how or why. No one questions it, if its not broke dont fix it. Aslong as the students excel and come out as pristine young ladies no one cares. You looked around at the long line of portraits hanging on the walls. A gallery of the staff. Nintey percent male. One hundred percent of the gorgeous, even a few abnormal looking ones like a certain Mr...Rivia??. Eyes are not naturally that bright even for honey brown. Contacts. And he must dye his hair. You scoffed at his portrait. He tries to hard. Probably trying to cater to the younger teens newfound 'werewolf' infatuation thats popped up. Just a few years ago when you were their age 'vampires' were all the rage...As long as the sparkled. You paced the hall small heels clicking on the stone floor as you went. You'd done your research you'd been here just over two weeks and you hadnt been idle. Finding out as much as you could and yet nothing at all. The girls didnt talk much about what goeson here one did slip saying 'the mount' as they called the school was traditional in values and the way it handled things. The girl was quickly shushed by the others who turned a suspicious red colour. Other then that not much was said and you were avoided which was fine by you. You wasn't staying. You traced the picture frames slowly one by one the stunning thick men staring back at you from behind the glass, most blue eyed some a bright azure like the astrology teacher a Mr Kent crystal clear blues looking at you from behind thick framed nerd glasses. Others darker. Like a Mr Walker. Ah yes your new foe apparently. You stopped and stared at him, he looked tough but... looks can be deciving, just looke at that Rivia one for instance. No you didnt think the stoic Mr walker dyed his har or wear contact's, but you did think he was trying to seem more intimidating thennhe wpreally was. He was the Truant officer, normally in schools the truant officer is the only member of taff who can really touch you. But here things were. Different. You'd learned from the others that what happens in the mount, stays in the mount. Walker was the one all the students feared most he had a reputation for being the toughest and meanest of all the staff. It was said he was CIA and trained to kill-had killed. And that he hunts down pupils how skip class stalking them like prey before dragging them into his office and giving them hell before taking them to headmaster Cavill for a second dose. Dose of what you didnt know but apparently it was bad. Painful even. You doubted that very much. You doubted many things about this place, the reputation, the legality, the curriculum, the teachers! But most of all you doubted they would contain you. You doubted they'd manage to keep you here at this correctional institution. You'd got to your final compulsory year at school and been thrust into this place dragged kicking and screaming into its halls of residence and set to stay untill 'further notice' you were just about to turn eighteen! Just about to leave behinde the 'holier then thou teachers' and do what you wanted and???  No. The government decided you used up our chances. A few warnings from police and being expelled from a few schools were fine but apparently drinking underage and caught with class A drugs was a step to far. The courts called you a liability and shipped you off here to continue education in a 'safe structured environment' your parents were only to happy to agree, why wouldn't they be? You'd get a free education, free room and board and collage courses a free degree to if you were not 'reformed' withing the next yer or so. All they had to do was sign their rights to the school for the duration of your stay. And indoing so condemned you to stay here until your new Headmaster deemed you could leave and not a second before! But what he didnt know, what everyone around you failed to realise is that your not like the rest. your not a simpering little girl who'd be 'put in you place' by a few pretty men spouting sweet praise and stern glares. you were getting out! you just had to put a bit of work in. "Miss y/l/n/? are you okay?" you snapped your gaze away from the photo snapping out of your thougts seeing Mr Cavill the headmaster. Your jailor, he frowned as he gained on you coming to a slow stop before you chest heaving with a sigh one brow quirked waiting for an answer. "yes I'm fine" you spoke stiffly, it was no secret you didnt want to be here, you hadnt yet fallen under what ever fearful lusty haze that seemed to hang over the other students yet. he huffed shifting on his feet tucking the folders under his arm tightly tipping his head forward  eyeing you over his glasses with an almost scolding look the made you jolt. "Well you wont be if you hang around here much longer. Your skipping class young lady, and right infront of me to. Didnt you hear the bell?" he asked slowy motioning to the school bell in the corner of the hall but you kept your mouth shut chooseing not to look at him. "Right well come on off to class with you, I'll let this one pass but you'll not get another get out of jail free card. come on get out your planner i'll walk you to class we can say you got lost" he added waving his hand at you making you scowl and pull out the planner rage boiling inside of you and you looked at the classes. Block B Art with Mr Solo. you huffed as Mr Cavil turned and motioned for you to follow him. "Come along before Walker Catches you, he does not put up with this type of thing accidental or not and take it from me you dont want to get in his bad books he is not known for being merciful to the girls" he utterd you growled under your breath casting one last look to the portrait trying to commit it to memory. you didnt give a shit about the truant officer's reputation. you'd be the one to get the better of him. And you'd be the first  to get out! You'd be kicked out. You swear to god your not stayng here. You couldn't!

Why Prune Trees?

With all this talk of pruning trees for the winter, it would be nice for you to know how to identify why to prune your trees and how we’ll do it. Tree service west Ashley SC has been doing this for a long time. We are your local ISA certified arborists and handle a wide range of pruning jobs. We’ll run through the reasons that pruning is necessary and then we’ll cover how to get it done properly.

Reasons To Prune Trees

There are several reasons to prune a plant. Some obvious reasons would be if limbs are touching your home or other structure, if limbs are growing into power lines or hanging over the road too far, or if there is excessive deadwood in the tree.  We have four main categories for reason why pruning should happen: safety, plant health, growth control, plant training.

a.     Safety

This may be the most obvious reason to prune a tree. Limbs may be in contact with a structure, obstructing access to roads, driveways, or exits, or even touching powerlines. Or maybe they are overhanging a place with a lot of foot traffic: sidewalk, playground, deck, or balcony. You don’t necessarily need prune these immediately, but you should watch them closely. If they start to look like they are dying or diseased, or start getting in the way of everyday activities, call us and we’ll come take a look.

b.     Plant health

Trimming diseased or rotten growth form a tree will prevent the issue from spreading. Correctly identifying what should be excised is a job for a professional. Sometimes trees may look like they have unnatural growth, but actually are healthy. For instance, Maryland’s Sweetgum trees grow a corky wedge along the branches. This may look abnormal to some, but it is characteristic of this type of tree.

c.     Growth control

When concerning plants used near your home, it is important to control their growth. Pants should not outgrow their space as they will either overtake neighbouring plants or become too large to be supported. Overgrowth encourages rot and stifles air flow. Keep your plants the appropriate size and shape.

d.     Plant training

This refers to trimming to encourage growth. When a plant’s limbs are cut, new growth will emerge from the cut site, likely in more numbers than before. This is common practice with edible plants like herbs and with flowering plants to encourage more blooms. This is best done in the winter to limit the cut site’s exposure before spring arrives.

The Right Way To Prune Trees

a.     You can remove smaller branches, anything less than 1 1/2 inches, using shears, loppers, or a bow saw.

b.     For bigger branches, you have to use a little more precaution so that you don’t damage the main part of the tree. Using proper cutting techniques is crucial for your safety and the health of the plan. 

Conclusion

There will be about a foot or more of the branch stub remaining. Go ahead and cut it off parallel to the collar and as close to the collar as possible without damaging it.

I read with great interest the article by Vojdani et al. [1], concerning the hypothesis of a molecular mimicry mechanism between the nucleoprotein/spike protein of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and self-antigens. Viruses are notoriously involved in the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases [2], and the authors reasonably conclude that such a cross-reactivity might lead to the development of immune-mediated disorders in COronaVirus Disease-19 (COVID-19) patients in the long term. The authors also suggest that a similar scenario might take place following COVID-19 vaccination.

Vaccine-associated autoimmunity is a well-known phenomenon attributed to either the cross-reactivity between antigens or the effect of adjuvant [3]. When coming to COVID-19 vaccine, this matter is further complicated by the nucleic acid formulation and the accelerated development process imposed by the emergency pandemic situation [4]. Currently, lipid nanoparticle-formulated mRNA vaccines coding for the SARS-CoV-2 full-length spike protein have shown the highest level of evidence according to the efficacy and safety profile in clinical trials, being therefore authorized and recommended for use in the United States and Europe. Although the results from phase I and II/III studies have not raised serious safety concerns [5], the time of observation was extremely short and the target population not defined. Reported local and systemic adverse events seemed to be dose-dependent and more common in participants aged under 55 years. These results presumably depend on the higher reactogenicity occurring in younger people that may confer greater protection towards viral antigens but also predispose to a higher burden of immunological side effects.

The reactogenicity of COVID-19 mRNA vaccine in individuals suffering from immune-mediated diseases and having therefore a pre-existent dysregulation of the immune response has not been investigated. It may be hypothesized that immunosuppressive agents prescribed to these patients mitigate or even prevent side effects related to vaccine immunogenicity.

Besides the mechanism of molecular mimicry, mRNA vaccines may give rise to a cascade of immunological events eventually leading to the aberrant activation of the innate and acquired immune system.

RNA vaccines have been principally designed for cancer and infectious diseases. This innovative therapeutic approach is based on the synthesis of RNA chains coding for desired antigenic proteins and exploits the intrinsic immunogenicity of nucleic acids. In order to avoid degradation by RNases, RNA can be encapsulated in nanoparticles or liposomes, which deliver the cargo inside target cells following a process of endocytosis. mRNA is then translated into immunogenic proteins by cell ribosomal machinery [6].

However, prior to the translation, mRNA may bind pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) in endosomes or cytosol. Toll-like receptor (TLR)3, TLR7 and TLR8 are able to recognize chains of double-stranded (ds)RNA or single-stranded (ss)RNA in endosomes, while retinoic acid-inducible gene-I (RIG-I) and melanoma differentiation-associated protein 5 (MDA5) may detect short and long filaments of dsRNA in the cytosol. The final result is the activation of several pro-inflammatory cascades, including the assembly of inflammasome platforms, the type I interferon (IFN) response and the nuclear translocation of the transcription factor nuclear factor (NF)-kB [7].

Importantly, the up-regulation of these immunological pathways is widely considered to be at the basis of several immune-mediated diseases, especially in genetically predisposed subjects who have an impaired clearance of nucleic acids [8]. This could particularly hold true in young female individuals, due to the over-expression of X-linked genes presiding over the antiviral response and the stimulatory effect played by estrogens on the immune system. The X chromosome hosts several genes involved in the immune response, including TLR7 and TLR8 genes, and about 10% of microRNAs indirectly controlling the activation of the immune system [9].

Therefore, young and female patients who are already affected or predisposed (e.g. immunological and serological abnormalities in absence of clinical symptoms, familiarity for immune-mediated diseases) to autoimmune or autoinflammatory disorders should be carefully evaluated for the benefits and risks of COVID-19 mRNA vaccination. According to epidemiological data, these subjects may develop the infection asymptomatically or pauci-symptomatically and it is worth noting that, in line with the article of Vojdani et al. [1], the presence of autoreactive cells and autoantibodies cross-reacting against SARS-CoV-2 epitopes may even turn naturally protective towards the infection. Until proven otherwise, the administration of a nucleic acid vaccine may instead put these individuals at risk of unwanted immunological side effects by either sensitizing the PRRs or generating cross-reactive cell clones and antibodies. Moreover, COVID-19 mRNA vaccine might differently stimulate myeloid or plasmacytoid dendritic cells (DCs), generating an unbalance in the downstream cytokine pathways that play a crucial role in autoimmunity and autoinflammation [3].

Modifications in nucleoside and nanoparticle composition through a proper manufacturing may help to prevent some of these drawbacks. For instance, the substitution of uridine with pseudouridine was shown to reduce immunogenicity and type I IFN production while enhancing the synthesis of viral antigenic proteins [10]. A strong type I IFN response may, in fact, negatively affect the vaccine efficacy by suppressing the process of mRNA translation [10]. However, type I IFNs play a beneficial role in strengthening the antiviral response, as they favor the maturation of DCs, the CD8+ T cell-mediated cytotoxicity and the secretion of several cytokines, like interleukin (IL)-12 and IL-23 [11]. Notably, polymorphisms in the genes encoding these cytokines or their receptors have been associated with the susceptibility to autoimmune diseases [12]. Additionally, an excessive production of type I IFNs may result in the breakdown of the immunological tolerance and, therefore, in autoimmunity [10].

Lipid components may also dictate the type and intensity of the immune response, by enhancing the production of IFN-γ, IL-2 and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α with the subsequent activation of both CD4+ and CD8+ T lymphocytes. Although this is not the case of the authorized COVID-19 mRNA vaccines, future formulations containing adjuvant like TLR agonists [13] may exacerbate pre-existing autoimmune or autoinflammatory disorders and should therefore be discouraged in this cohort of patients.

Given the current state of the art, my view is that individuals with a dysfunctional immune response should receive the COVID-19 mRNA vaccine only if the benefits of this approach clearly outweigh any risks and after a careful evaluation case by case.”
