Hi!!
Do you have any recommendations for the “take me instead” trope?? Idk why but I am currently OBSESSED with that trope!!
One of my FAVORITE examples is Hawaii Five-0 10x22 when Steve tells God that if he wants to take someone, he better take him and not Danny. Fucking love that scene.
Another good one is Lucifer literally any time Chloe is in danger but my favorite is when he got shot in 1x13 and he begs his dad to protect Chloe and he'll do anything he wants.
Some other good examples:
Merlin 5x13
Doctor Who 4x13
Supernatural 4x09
The A-Team 5x13
Avengers: Endgame
Prodigal Son 1x01
The Haunting of Hill House 1x10

Stargate Rewatch: 1x01 Children of the Gods
Tumblr media
After rewatching the original film I'm kicking off with the show's pilot - I actually watched both the original version and the "final cut" because there are aspects I enjoy of both. The final cut removes a few problematic elements and adds in some new material, but also cuts a few lines I really enjoy and the original version is really where my nostalgia lies, so... as always, my feelings, they are mixed.
Tumblr media
Cold open with some redshirts - four men and one woman, sadly representative of the gender ratio the show will have going forward.
The unlucky Smurfette is Sgt Carol Weterings, not that I think she's ever mentioned by name in the episode.
"Probably the only thing it ever did was cost money." Heh.
I will say that Teal'c turning against Apophis at the end of the episode is nicely built - starting here where he examines the gun and identifies it as technology far advanced beyond the humans they’re used to dealing with.
Tumblr media
When your name is above the title, you get introduced with an extreme close up.
The differences between the film and the show don't really bother me - I view the show as taking place in a very similar but alternate universe to the film rather than trying to squeeze them together - so O'Neil becomes O'Neill, Sha'uri becomes Sha're, Tyler becomes Charlie, Abydos is the closest planet to Earth, not the other side of the known universe, etc etc. But I consider the events of the film to be canon to the show universe unless directly contradicted.
But otherwise the pilot tries very hard to stick as close as possible to the film, to the point that Major Samuels states that General Hammond replaced General West.
Hammond says it’s been “over a year” since the events of the film, unclear exactly how much over.
The final cut has a longer version of the dead Jaffa, revealing one of them was a woman, and with all the changes to eliminate plot holes I don't know why Brad Wright put one back in. While we do see Jaffa women in the series, Goa'uld and Jaffa society is depicted as highly patriarchal and female Jaffa soliders are rare - we never see them in Apophis's ranks. It's an odd inclusion.
"What if the aliens get it?" "Well, they could be blowing their noses right now." hee!
"THANKS SEND MORE" Remember when Daniel had allergies? Give it a few episodes and the show sure won’t!
Tumblr media
Amanda Tapping, doing her absolute best with some terrible dialogue. Brad Wright blames the "reproductive organs" speech on Jonathan Glassner, and it is terrible and thankfully removed from the final cut version, along with some other 90's era sexism from the bros. However there is one great moment, where Kawalsky asks "Have you ever pulled out of a simulated bombing run in an F16 at eight plus Gs?" and without missing a beat, Sam deadpans: "Yes." I love Sam.
"I'll give you exactly 24 hours to either return or send a message through - no Kleenex boxes, please." Hee, Hammond isn't quite the cuddly commander we know and love yet, but he has his moments.
It's very cute that Sam has a very similar reaction to the one Daniel had in the film just before going through the gate, although his was based in the wonder of something incredible and unknown, and hers is based in the physical manifestation of knowledge - says a lot about each of them and their similarities yet different perspectives - the marrying of these two points of view is what makes them such a good duo.
Tumblr media
Michael Shanks, doing the James Spader impression that won him the role. He was only 26!
And of course Alexis Cruz, the only holdover from the movie (other than Erick Avari, who won't appear until season 2).
The original team sure did leave a bunch of weapons with the Abydonians, didn't they? I presume they taught them how to fire the guns because there's no way Daniel could/would have. He did however teach them very good English.
"Greetings from Earth, Doctor Jackson" - very cute, it's sad that Ferretti disappears into the ether by season 2.
Tumblr media
Not the face of a woman who is shy, but a woman who knows how to make An Entrance. She even smirks a little as she walks over.
There is however a weird little moment where Sha're is reluctant to shake Jack's hand - maybe she wasn't impressed about his little joke brushing by Daniel? Both of these beats are removed from the final cut version which is probably for the best.
It's criminal Sha're doesn't actually get to speak in this scene, and in fact how few lines she has in the episode altogether.
It's disappointing, because Sha'uri was such an integral part of the film, and yet the show tries to get rid of her as quickly as possible to get Daniel on SG-1 and give him a core drive for the next three seasons. Her abduction is the precipitating event of Daniel's ten-year character arc and defining moment of transition from film!Daniel to show!Daniel, and yet she doesn't get a character arc of her own.
However I do think Shanks and Vaitiare Hirshon sell the relationship in the few scenes they have - they're very physically connected/protective of one another, perhaps concerned that Jack's there to take Daniel back with him (which is in fact the case). And of course Sha're, annoyed at being left behind while Daniel shows the others his discovery, gives him a very proprietary kiss.
I think show!Sha're gets a bad rap, she's spunky and I love her. I just wish there was more of her.
Tumblr media
Sam and Daniel insta-bonding - Daniel making an intuitive leap to solve the puzzle and Sam filling in the gaps with science to make it work, they really are kindred spirits.
The issue with the cartouche though is that the symbols look like hierogyphs, not star constellations/Stargate glyphs.
Back in the pyramid, there's a scene sorely missing here - imagine if rather than ogling Sha're, Ferretti had a conversation with her, giving us more of a chance to know Sha're on her own terms rather than just Daniel's wife and the object of others desire. Especially when Ferretti was on the original mission so knows she's more than a "beautiful woman" - it would also give additional weight to him remembering the gate address where she's taken later on.
Teal'c clocks Skaara's gun as the same tech he saw on Earth in breadcrumb no. 2.
Tumblr media
"Nothing good can ever come through this gate!" "You came through it , Daniel" I mean...I realise there are a lot of problematic white savior-y aspects to the show, but idk, this scene and the Abydonians all petting Daniel to say goodbye gets me. Sean Amsing as Tobay also returns in Full Circle which is a nice callback to this scene.
The final cut removes a reaction shot from Jack which I have mixed feelings about - I get that the focus probably needs to be on Daniel at that moment, but I do think it's important for Jack to appreciate how Daniel really found a home with the Abydonians and was appreciated and loved by them, and it's nicely played by RDA.
LOL, watch out for how many times Jack pats Daniel on the shoulder. Apparently that annoyed Shanks so RDA kept doing it, but it's also a nice little setup of their relationship going forward.
There's a second shoulder pat in the hallway.
Tumblr media
Just two dudes, drinking beer, (not) talking about their feelings.
“She was the complete opposite of everyone else, she practically fell on the floor laughing every time I tried to do some kind of chore they all took for granted.” Underrated line, because it gives important context to Daniel and Sha’re’s relationship, and perhaps more importantly, how Daniel characterises her - she is the one who keeps him grounded, who teases him, there is balance to their relationship. There’s potentially an interesting parallel there to Vala in the later seasons, although it manifests in a very different way.
“I think she forgave me for what happened to our kid, she just couldn’t forget…I’m the opposite, I can never forgive myself, but sometimes I can forget.” This is a great scene.
Tumblr media
The Final Cut removes all the “harem scenes” and while I can see why, we do lose a bit of context to Teal'c's involvement in the process as he is the one who chooses the women from the holding cell to go into the harem, and then from the harem to be presented to Apophis.
There was a missed opportunity to actually see Sha're interact with the other prisoners - she could have had a conversation with Weterings at least, find out she was from Earth, perhaps assure her that the others would be coming to rescue them.
To the surprise of no one I’m sure, this episode does not pass the Bechdel test.
But there is a hint of solidarity among the prisoners - first in the holding cell where the others hold Skaara back, and here in the harem Sha're squeezes the hand of another woman.
Weterings is killed by the hand device which keeps the electrical current aesthetic from the movie the show will later abandon - as Teal'c looks perturbed.
Tumblr media
Daniel back on Earth immediately getting stuck into the coffee even though no one else is drinking, lol.
"Ra played a god, the sun god, he borrowed the religion and culture of the ancient Egyptians he brought through the gate and used it to enslave them." A bit of a change from the movie here, where it was the other way around - slightly less problematic!
Everyone is in dress blues except Kawalsky who is in camo, and Daniel, who is wearing Jack's clothes.
"Colonel I'd like to remind you that rescuing Dr Jackson's wife is a secondary objective." This line was removed in the final cut and I don't know why? It adds to Samuel's bastardry.
Has everyone forgotten about Weterings?
Shoulder pat no. 3!
Tumblr media
In the second harem scene Sha're is now sitting isolated from the other women - did she argue with them? Just trying not to be noticed? What happened offscreen?
Also what's going on in the top left corner - it looks like the healing device! Maybe Sha're did throw down with one of the others and that's why she's on her own. I have to read into things, because the show gives us so very little of Sha're and it's a real shame.
She does get a good moment fighting against the guards though - earlier she was defiant and told them she wasn't afraid of them, here she bites one of them on the arm.
I understand from a narrative perspective why Sha're is the one who gets taken over, but it really is Schrodinger’s fridging - until she’s found Sha’re is both alive and dead for the purpose of the narrative, both Daniel’s primary drive and source of inner conflict.
Tumblr media
Christopher Judge does so much with so little. Master of the cheek twitch!
Oof, the nudity. In isolation from everything else, it doesn’t bother me - it’s intended to be horrifying, not titillating, and is effective in conveying objectification and dehumanisation by the Goa'uld.
However, it was a studio request, Wright/Glassner regretted doing it, it doesn’t fit the tone of the show going forward, but most importantly Hirshon was pressured into the full frontal when she only agreed to topless, and for that alone it should be excised.
The puppet symbiotes are so much more effective than the cgi they use later. I don’t think there’s another scene in the show that really captures the menace of the Goa’uld like this one - the symbiote (who we'll later learn is Amaunet) slithering around on Sha're's body is just so visceral and horrifying. The glowing eyes before implantation is an effective touch.
Tumblr media
Jack sticking Daniel in it with Sam by saying Sha're was a gift could be amusing, except the conversation gets cut off before Daniel can explain. It annoys me, because Daniel not "accepting" Sha're was actually the point? It's kind of important! I assume he does tell Sam the whole story later.
"Unless we want to get ourselves a really bad reputation, I just think we should avoid shooting the first people we meet on a new planet" is a nice follow up to Daniel's sarcastic "well that would have been an excellent reason to shoot everyone" from the film. At this point, Daniel doesn't appear to be carrying a weapon other than a knife. Oh, how that will change!
The Chulak priests speak "a derivation of Arabic" and something else - the Goa'uld language is meant to be similar to Abydonian, which is based on Ancient Egyptian. Of course modern Egyptian is an Arabic dialect that came much later, but perhaps we are to assume Goa'uld - or at least the Chulak vernacular - evolved along similar lines.
Jack unable to shoot Sha're when she stands in front of Apophis is a nice movie callback.
Tumblr media
The final cut has a good extra scene between Sam and Daniel where he is quite delusional thinking Sha're might just be drugged, and Sam tries to talk sense into him. Daniel's blind optimism against Sam's pragmatic realism will be an important aspect of their relationshio going forward.
Shoulder pat no. 4!
Teal'c P.I. sees Skaara talking to Jack and starts putting pieces together - the weapons from the opening scene, the weapons on Abydos + Jack's watch, and Daniel helpfully supplying the Earth glyph.
Alexis Cruz is committed to the film pronunciation of Sha’uri, bless him.
“But you are a great warrior, we defeated Ra together!” Skaara’s faith in Jack is so pure.
Skaara gets a shoulder pat too.
"Another fine day on planet Kawalsky" - This line was removed from the final cut! What a tragedy. I get the sense Brad Wright feels a bit cringe about the campier aspects of the show, but it's part of the charm! To be fair Ferretti was more of the wisecracker in the movie rather than Kawalsky, but I love that show Kawalsky is a little goofy.
Tumblr media
I'm sorry, what is this silver monstrosity? I guess a sliver of credit that after the nudity not going for a sexy alien outfit, but this is a hate crime. I also have a very high tolerance, and even affection for, silly Stargate headgear, but there's camp and then there's ugly.
Peter Williams as Apophis though: 10/01, no notes.
"They're going to choose...who will be the children of the gods." I do love it when they say the title of the thing in the thing.
The subtle moment where Teal'c motions that Jack should kneel is a nice setup - Skaara being very reluctant and angry about kneeling, and being the last to do so, is nice movie continuity. Skaara really gets shortchanged by the show after this episode.
"How much would I remember if you chose me?" I wonder if Daniel ever thinks that maybe him drawing the attention of the Goa'uld contributed to Skaara getting chosen. You know, just to really lay on the angst and guilt.
So the premise is that these Apophis underlings are choosing hosts for their children who are symbiotes ready for implantation, which doesn't really fit with what we learn about Goa'uld queens/reproduction later. We also learn later that Skaara is taken as a host for Apophis's son Klorel which doesn't sqaure with these two choosing him.
Tumblr media
Headcanon time! This is actually Zipacna who we meet later arguing for Klorel at Triad - different actor, of course, but he wears a similarly silly hat. So Amaunet now has access to all of Sha're's memories of Skaara and she and Apophis decide that he will make a good host - maybe she also likes the idea of a family resemblance between herself and Klorel (I think we can assume he is also Amaunet's son?). But Apophis doesn't want anyone to know he's choosing a host for his offspring, so sends Zipacna out to do it for him.
This makes sense of Klorel later claiming that Apophis chose his host, and also gives backstory to Zipacna showing up in Pretense. And in the scene, the Goa'uld make a very quick decision to take Skaara, while the rest get very grossly examined people before choosing.
Tumblr media
Shoulder pat no. 5!
"I have nowhere to go." Teal'c turning on his brother Jaffa to save a roomful of people, not expecting to survive himself, really hits.
"For this, you can stay at my place." hee!
Jack not wanting to hear it when Teal'c tells him Skaara is no longer himself is a turnabout of the earlier scene with Daniel. Not so flip now it's your Emotional Support Abydonian, are you Jack?
Kawalsky getting Goa'ulded doesn't seem to hurt as much as Sha're's - because the symbiote isn't mature, or because Amaunet is particularly sadistic?
Tumblr media
Soon to be SG-1 posing for their album cover.
It was the late 90's when tvs were tiny, so everyone had to stand uncomfortably close.
And we end with shoulder pat no. 6!

1x01 - extreme aggressor pt.2 “great”
pairing: spencer reid x fem!reader; read part one here!
summary: a small blurb-like continuation of part one
warnings: literally none? maybe mentions of trauma? fluff? awkwardness? second-hand embarrassment?
word count: 1463
Tumblr media
Walking down the halls of the Seattle FBI office, you see a familiar lanky figure down the hall, facing away from you.
“Spencer?” You call out before you even realized you opened your mouth. You feel a tinge of embarrassment as you realize you are indeed, not alone in the hallway. Some other agents and workers glance at you before carrying on with whatever they were doing.
The man, in question, that you called out turns around, hearing his name and his eyes slowly center onto your figure.
Before you know it, he’s walking down the hallway towards you and you give him a sheepish look as he arrives in front of you, “Dr. Reid, I am so sorry,” You grimace and lower your voice, hoping to not embarrass him in his place of work any more.
The awkward man that you had met in your sister’s apartment couldn’t have possibly been okay with you yelling his name across his workplace and around his colleagues.
“I just wanted to say thank you,” You say before he can get a word in, “Thank you to you and your team for finding my sister.” You give him a grateful smile.
Dr. Reid chuckles softly, “It’s no problem,” He says, “I’m glad me and my team could help find your sister and catch the guy responsible,”
“And I wanted to thank you for what you said to me,” You added on, “I was panicking and it wasn’t doing my sister, my brother, or myself any good.”
He waved it off, “It was no problem at all. In fact, I would be slightly worried if someone in your shoes weren’t upset or panicked.”
He chuckled at his last sentence and you returned with a small laugh.
“I, uh,” Spencer continues to talk, “know this might be a dumb question, but, um, how is your sister doing?” He asks.
You assume that in his line of work they often don’t get to see the people they help recover and their lives after.
You shrug and smile at him, “As good as she can be doing. The doctors want to keep her for another week and then she’ll go through a therapy and recovery plan. She’s still really freaked out about what happened and even David is setting her off.”
“That’s completely normal,” Spencer replies, “It probably is just the presence of a man, not necessarily your brother.”
You nod in agreement, “Yeah, I thought so too. David’s hurt by it though. The flinching, wincing, all that.” You say.
“We’re, um, actually thinking about moving Heather away from Seattle for a bit. Get a nice change in scenery and start fresh.” You add.
“Where were you thinking?”
“During the summer growing up, we would spend a few months with our grandparents in Maryland. They had this small place in Annapolis. When our grandparents died, they left it to our parents, and when they died, they left it to us. Heather, David, and I have some good memories growing up there and the house has been maintained over the years.” You explain.
Spencer smiles, “That, uh, sounds really nice. It might help your sister to be surrounded in a place she’s felt safe before.”
You both continue to dawdle around in the middle of the hallway, awkwardly. Neither of you make the move to leave or say goodbye, its almost like neither of you want this conversation to end.
“So,” You start to say, ending the momentary silence between the pair of you, “I should let you get back to work. You must be busy and have other people to help around here, huh.”
Against your will, your cheeks start blushing a small red tint and you get embarassed that you’ve held up this man’s day just so you could talk to him again.
“I don’t work here.” Spencer replies.
You’re sure he can see the confusement on your face after you realize what he just said.
He goes to explain himself, “What I mean! That is, um, I, uh, don’t work in this office. In this building. In Seattle. Me and my, uh, team traveled from Quantico. We’re all stationed in Quantico, Virginia.”
“Oh,” You laugh a little at his stumbling to answer, “Sorry, I just assumed that-”
He waved you off and chuckled to himself, “Don’t worry about it.”
“Oh, here,” You say, drawing the business card he gave you days earlier out of your purse, “I guess I didn’t need to use this afterall.”
“Keep it.” He blurts out not two seconds later. His hands stay by his side and there’s no movement to even accept back his card.
You try again, “I don’t really have a use for it now since Heather’s found and that guy is locked away. You should really give it out to another person who needs it.”
“Keep it,” He reiterates, “I insist.” He says, even going as far as taking his own hand and wrapping it around yours which was reaching out with the card in your fingers. He curls his larger hand around yours and tucks the card deeper into your palm without hurting you.
He steps back quickly afterwards and even as he angles his head towards the ground, you can see a faint blush on his cheeks. He’s embarrassed, you chuckle to yourself in your thoughts. You could tease him a bit more, but you decide not to.
“Are you in town for much longer?” You ask, vying to change the subject.
“Um,” He starts to answer while looking at his watch, “It’ll take roughly four to four and a half hours to get back to Virginia and it’s already pretty late, so we’ll probably leave first thing in the morning.”
You bite your lip and urge yourself in your thoughts to take your shot, “Do you and your team have plans tonight then?” You ask. You hope that he starts to get the hint so he can let you down gently if you’ve got it all wrong.
“I, uh, think we’re all doing our own thing tonight. Some are staying in the hotel. Others are exploring the city.” He informs.
“Do you, uh, -” You stutter, you wring your hands around behind your back, “Would you, um, like to grab dinner together?” You ask. You push back the urge to close your eyes and wince, wanting to see his reaction instead.
It’s a little more shocked than you had hoped for on his face, but you don’t see him pulling back or veering away from you. You take that as a good sign.
“Wh-what about your sister?” He asks, a little speechless.
“Visiting hours are over and David is handling a bunch of paperwork tonight.” You chuckle nervously, “I’m sorry if that made you really uncomfortable.” You apologize.
“Just nod and we can move on, pretend that I never asked you that, say goodbye and never see each other again.” You say, preparing for the worst.
“No!” He exclaims, nearly cutting you off. “I’d, uh, I’d really like that! To do that.”
He takes a deep breath and rephrases, “I would like to grab dinner with you.” He says, looking you in the eyes. You can’t help it when a smile creeps onto your face.
“I just, uh, need to very quickly finish some paperwork, so, um, would a late dinner be okay?” He asks, carefully.
You nod, “Yeah, that’d be great. We can just meet somewhere if that’s easier for you? I can text you the address of this really great Mexican place nearby?” You offer.
He shakes his head up and down enthusiastically and eagerly rummages through his satchel bag, still perched up on his hip.
He hands you something, “That would be great. Mexican is great. I’m- that’s- you’re-” He takes another deep breath and takes a moment, “Great. Just, um, great. I’ll be done by 9 and we can meet then. It, uh, was really great talking to you again.”
Spencer’s face flushes even more and after he hands you something, he moves away and says his goodbyes, making his way down the hall in the direction he came from before stopping in his tracks, turning around and walking in the opposite direction.
You can hear him as he passes where you still stand. “Great? Why did you say great so many times? You said great five times in two minutes, Spencer!” You hear him chastising himself.
You laugh quietly to yourself as you watch him leave, waving to him when he turns his head to see if you’re still watching him (and you are). You look down at your hand and let out a larger laugh now that his is no longer in sight.
He handed you another one of his business cards.

best nuwho episodes to show to someone who has never seen doctor who, but wants to get into it*
*i’m working off of very specific criteria here. this can’t just be another “best episodes” list, because an episode being good doesn’t necessarily mean it would make a good introduction to a series. for this reason, there will probably be very few episodes past s6 or so on here, as i feel like that’s around the time that many doctor who episodes become too steeped in the show’s own history/overarching plotlines to make the most effective starting points (definitely at least partially moffat’s fault lol)
1x01 rose — maybe too obvious a choice, but this episode is the pilot for a reason.
—pros: does a very good job establishing nuwho’s version of the doctor, as well as thoroughly and effectively introducing us to rose and her life; the autons are a good and fun choice for the first threat.
—cons: is definitely not AS good as some other episodes of the show, so maybe not the best if you only have one episode to show someone and you want to make the most of it
1x06 dalek
—pros: establishes one of Thee enemies of the series, demonstrates 9 and rose’s values, sets up/explains a bit of the time war in an easy to understand way, has a great emotional core
—cons: i genuinely can’t think of any
1x09/1x10 the empty child/the doctor dances
—pros: fabulous storytelling all around with plot, themes, and pacing, emotional but with a happy ending, great blending of tone throughout, and a complete standalone story
—cons: it’s always a bit of a risk to start with a two parter
2x04 the girl in the fireplace
—pros: great creature design, fun storytelling devices, pretty self contained as far as references/lore go, fantastic performances from everyone but especially from sophia myles
—cons: has some of steven moffat’s worst writing attributes, including 10 feeling out of character in several spots, and reinette being very clearly a Moffat Woman in many ways (though this is in my opinion somewhat saved by myles’ great acting)
2x08/2x09 the impossible planet/the satan pit — i really debated putting these ones on here, but this story was MY introduction to the series so. clearly it’s very effective
—pros: really immersive story and setting, great cast of guest characters/actors, another self contained story (as far as i remember), introduces the ood
—cons: another two parter, might be a bit intense as a first story for some people, 10 and rose’s dynamic/significant moments in this might not hit the same way for someone who hasn’t seen other episodes
3x01 smith and jones
—pros: new companion episode, so the audience gets things explained to them at the same time as martha, fun little mystery at the center, interesting conflict/non-antagonist antagonists, good chemistry between tennant and agyeman, the hole rose left emotionally can be felt but doesn’t cut into the story as much as it does in the runaway bride
—cons: is again maybe not one of the standout episodes of the whole series (but is still very solid)
3x03 gridlock — might be a bit controversial since i didn’t include new earth, but i’ll explain
—pros: really interesting setting and plot, and while i think seeing new earth first gives interesting context, i don’t think it’s necessary to enjoy or understand what’s happening in this episode, and it’s kind of cool to come at this one from martha’s pov. showcases a lot of different kind of creatures/people, has a really satisfying and emotional conclusion, has the doctor reintroduce the concept of gallifrey and what happened to it
—cons: could definitely have some confusing elements if you haven’t seen new earth, in particular novice hame and the face of boe, and the effect of the city being the way it is in gridlock could be a bit diminished without the context of 2x01
3x10 blink
—pros: considered to be one of if not the best episode of the series, and with good reason. carey mulligan KILLS it, the mystery is incredibly compelling from start to finish, and the weeping angels are undoubtedly one of the best additions to the series. this episode is crafted damn near perfectly
—cons: while this episode is incredible, i don’t think it’s actually the best possible intro to the show that many people think it is; it’s not a good microcosm of the show as a whole in terms of structure and tone, and the doctor is really hardly in this episode at all. it makes the episode really gripping and intriguing if you’re already familiar with the show, but i actually think that effect is slightly dulled if you’re somebody who isn’t. this doesn’t mean that it would necessarily be the WORST introduction to the show (i’m still including it on the list after all), but i also don’t think it’s the best
4x08/4x09 silence in the library/forest of the dead
—pros: do i have to keep mentioning the episodes are really good? anyway these are really good. really highlights donna’s complexities, story is tense and emotional and intellectually engaging all at once, introduces river/touches on relationship dynamics with a time traveler, great and genuinely scary monster
—cons: another two parter, river’s introduction and the emotional weight of her and 10’s dynamic might not hit the same if you don’t know the doctor as a character either, and the same goes for donna’s plotline in these episodes (it was really difficult in general to pick ANY donna episodes because so many of the ones that feature her are really tied up in series lore of some kind 😭)
4x10 midnight
—pros: genuinely SO brilliantly written, acted, and edited it is ACTUALLY crazy. i’m biased because this is my favorite episode of the series, but i really think it’s such an all around tight story, and definitely one of the more self-contained ones of the show (especially considering this is a one-off monster we don’t even really hear about afterwards, let alone see again). and really i cannot hype up the writing and acting in this episode enough—if you’re really into sociology as a focal point in your sci-fi this episode will be for you
—cons: kind of similar to blink in that this episode isn’t very emblematic of what the show normally is—both in its bottle setting and the fact that the doctor is totally solo for the majority of the runtime, which is not the norm. i love it, and i think it works really well for the episode, but it’s still an outlier (the tone is also more serious than most eps). and also as minor as they are, there are still a few lore moments/references that might be confusing if this were someone’s first episode (rose’s face coming through on the bus screen, for example)
5x01 the eleventh hour
—pros: new doctor, and similar to smith and jones in the new companion factor. great story, episode is filled with lots of great energy, and this really showcases some of moffat’s better attributes as a writer/showrunner, particularly the kind of fairytale vibe he brings to doctor who; first episode of nuwho with a new showrunner, so it kind of intentionally comes off as a bit of a soft reboot
—cons: while it IS a bit like a soft reboot, this is one that kind of rolls with the assumption that you sort of know the deal at this point when it comes to the doctor as a character. i wouldn’t say it’s necessarily confusing, but i could see it potentially being a bit annoying for a new viewer, or just not as effective as an episode. also this was made in 2010 by moffat, and it shows (the sherlock editing, in particular)
5x02 the beast below
—pros: continuing the fairytale vibe, engaging setting and mystery, absolutely heartbreaking in the best way possible, self-contained story
—cons: viewer might feel a bit lost if they don’t know anything about the doctor and amy or how they met. kind of pro british monarchy :/
5x08/5x09 the hungry earth/cold blood
—pros: introduces the silurians (to nuwho at least), has really good guest characters/dynamics, conflict is compelling and very nuanced (feels closer to a classic who episode if that’s something that compels you), and this is something i’ve refrained from mentioning so far, but these episodes in particular have absolutely fantaaaaaastic makeup/SFX, costuming, and production design
—cons: two parter (take a shot every time i say this), the dramatic conclusion of this one might be confusing and/or fall flat if you aren’t familiar with amy and rory or the overarching plot of the season, and i could definitely see some people finding these episodes boring with all the political talk (i definitely did as a kid)
6x09 night terrors
—pros: very self-contained (as far as i can remember), perfectly straddles the line of horror and sci-fi, has a good emotional core, and 11 with kids is almost always an a+ for me
—cons: honestly can’t really think of any? again maybe not like. an AMAZING episode, and it may have references to past episodes/events in it that i can’t remember that might be confusing to a new viewer
6x11 the god complex
—pros: GREAAATTTT episode hook that really quickly and effectively drops you into the setting and overall vibe of the episode, some great one off characters, encompasses a lot of doctor who’s themes and different blends of genre
—cons: the second half of the episode pretty significantly focuses on amy and her fears/insecurities related to the doctor, so much so that it almost made me not include this episode
7x07 the rings of akhaten
—pros: this episode is so good. great intro to clara’s character (despite it not being her first one), great setting, great alien designs + worldbuilding, great music, and oh my GOD the monologues…the damn monologues…chef’s kiss
—cons: the doctor’s monologue probably won’t have the same effect for a new viewer that it does for people who are already fans, but honestly it’s so good that i don’t think this is that big a deal
9x03/9x04 under the lake/before the flood
—pros: very similar vibes to the impossible planet/the satan pit, but honestly i think i’m even more compelled by this story than i was by that one. i LOVE all the moving parts in this, i love the characters, i love that we’re underwater, and i love that it’s GHOSTS!!
—cons: two parter (shot!), and specifically a two parter that—while i love it to bits—drags a bit more than other two parters that i’ve included on this list. a new viewer may also not totally get (or maybe even be put off by?) 12 and clara’s dynamic
10x01 the pilot
—pros: i’ll be honest i wouldn’t say this is one of my FAVORITE episodes or anything, but it’s still very solid, and i DO think it could make a good introduction into the series for someone
—cons: has multiple allusions to other characters/arcs that will probably feel kind of weird to a new viewer
eve of the daleks special
—pros: time loop lovers come get your juice!!! this episode fucks, it’s probably my favorite from chibnall’s era? top three at least for sure. features the daleks without being too steeped in the Lore/having them overshadow everything in the episode
—cons: this episode is an atypical structure flr the show, and is kind of like. is About 13 and yaz’s relationship, which will probably be kind of odd if you haven’t seen any of the show before
honorable mentions, aka episodes i really wanted to include, but which had one too many cons to justify: 1x02 the end of the world, 1x08 father’s day, 2x01 new earth, s3 xmas special the runaway bride, 3x08/3x09 human nature/the family of blood, s4 special the waters of mars, 5x07 amy’s choice, 5x10 vincent and the doctor, 5x11 the lodger, 6x04 the doctor’s wife, 6x05/6x06 the rebel flesh/the almost people, 6x10 the girl who waited, 10x10 the eaters of light, 11x06 demons of the punjab, 12x08 the haunting of villa diodati, 60th special wild blue yonder)
that’s it so far!! i may add onto this when we get more episodes with 15, we’ll see!
(also i promise i’m not as biased towards early seasons nuwho as this list implies, i was just trying to be as objective as i could possibly be with the criteria that i set 😭 (while obviously still being subjective to my opinions) a lot of the later seasons just don’t have very many easy entry points 😔 (which is i’m sure at least partly why the show is being soft rebooted with 15))

What you need to know to watch the David Tennant era of Doctor Who
I have been seeing so many people asking about this after watching Good Omens and wanting to jump into David Tennant's earlier work, so I've written list of what you need to know to watch his era of Doctor Who.
1) Please don't skip season 1 (DT shows up in the final episode of season 1). It's seriously amazing and is so important for understanding who the Tenth Doctor (Tennant's Doctor) is, the characters he loves and interacts with, and why they are so important.
2) If you do skip most of season 1, I recommend watching at least these few episodes
1x01 Rose - Introduces the companion Rose Tyler, sets up the concept of the show, introduces the Doctor himself
1x06 Dalek - Introduces the classic villain the Daleks, and why they are specifically so important to the NuWho Doctor (even more so than the Classic Doctors)
1x12 Bad Wolf and 1x13 The Parting of the Ways (two-parter) - Culmination of everything that makes the Tenth Doctor who he is and the farewell to the Ninth Doctor
Bonus:
1x04 Aliens of London and 1x05 World War Three (Two-parter) - These episodes have a rather cheesy alien villain, but introduce another extremely important character for Ten's run, and sets up an arc that culminates in the finale
1x08 Father's Day - A very important character is introduced in this episode, and more than that it's an amazing episode with stunning character moments, a beautiful story, and a flawless exploration of various relationships
1x09 The Empty Child and 1x10 The Doctor Dances (two-parter) - Some of the best episodes of the entire show, introduces another extremely important character for Ten's run, and sets up the relationship dynamic that is so important for Rose, the Doctor, and [redacted]
3) If you really don't even want to watch those episodes of season 1 in order to get to Tennant, here's some quick information that you should go in knowing.
Under the cut for spoilers
Important plot to know: The Time War
The Doctor is not just a Time Lord, he's the last of the Time Lords. There was a war between the Time Lords and the Daleks... the last great Time War. And in order to protect the universe from destruction, the Doctor was forced to end it by destroying everybody. He committed genocide on his own people, and on the Daleks, in order to protect the universe. And the trauma, ptsd, and loss of that haunts him. Rose is an enormous factor in him starting to recover from that trauma, and she does it simply by being the most ordinary person in the world who is capable of being extraordinary, and showing him that there is indeed wonders worth living for.
Important plot to know: Bad Wolf
Throughout the entirety of season 1, The Doctor and Rose Tyler constantly run into "Bad Wolf" imagery. No matter where they are, when they are, or who they are up against, Bad Wolf is waiting for them. In the finale, they find themselves up against a fleet of Daleks who had escaped the Time War, thanks to the Emperor of the Daleks. The Doctor assumes that they had used Bad Wolf to lure him there, but they were just as confused by it as he was.
The threat is dire, and the Doctor finds himself facing a similar choice that he faced during the Time War: Destroy the last of the Daleks, but in doing so also destroy his adopted home (the Earth). And in the end, he cannot do it. But one thing he can do is send Rose home and keep her safe, like he promised her mother he would do. Rose absolutely refuses to do so, and finds her way back to him by looking into the Time Vortex transforming herself into a Goddess. She becomes the Bad Wolf, the Goddess who creates herself, and she left the Bad Wolf message back across time and space for herself so that when the time came she would know what to do. But all of that power is killing her, so the Doctor absorbs it all in order to save her life.
And so the Ninth Doctor, the one fresh from the Time War, traumatized, guilt-ridden, haunted by a loss he cannot even begin to talk about, dies for the love of Rose Tyler. And that is what Ten is born from. He is born for the love of Rose Tyler.
Important characters to know: Rose Tyler
This was mostly covered in the Bad Wolf plot, but Rose Tyler is the definition of ordinary. She works in a shop, is very firmly lower class, and has as much aspiration as she does opportunity. But she has grit, determination, and intelligence. So when the Doctor comes along offering her a chance to travel through time she jumps at the chance.
Her parents are Jackie Tyler and Pete Tyler (deceased), and her boyfriend is Mickey Smith. In the episode Father's Day, Rose goes back in time so that when her father dies in a car accident he doesn't die alone, and she holds his hand when he dies.
Important characters to know: MP Harriet Jones
MP Harriet Jones is a completely ordinary woman who the Doctor and Rose meet in their travels together. But she's brave, smart, and willing to do absolutely anything to save the world... even if it means sacrificing her own life to do it. When he first meets her, the Doctor feels like he knows who she is, and only at the end of their adventure does he remember: she will later be elected Prime Minister for three successive terms, and is the architect of Britain's Golden Age
Important characters to know: Captain Jack Harkness
Captain Jack Harkness is a Time Agent and a con man from the 51st Century who will probably cry if he is prevented from flirting with any man, woman, or vaguely human-shaped being at any given point. The Doctor and Rose meet him when he is actively trying to con him, but he proves himself in the end when he willingly goes to his death in order to save the world. The Doctor and Rose save his life, and he travels with them.
During the finale, in order to buy the Doctor time, Jack leads an army of civilians against the Daleks, kissing both Rose and the Doctor in farewell and telling them that he wished he hadn't let them influence him into becoming a good man... because he might have lived longer if he was a coward. Jack sacrifices his life to buy the Doctor time, but when Rose emerges as the Bad Wolf she restores him to life. When he runs back to where the Doctor, Rose, and the TARDIS are, they have already left, leaving him behind in the year 200,100

fuck it stargirl episode ranking. yes! all thirty-nine of them!
3x03 "the blackmail": i don't have a cool justification i'm sorry i just love the crocks and i think the fight scene is fantastic. i don't even care that we can see the stuntpeople's faces it's absolutely delightful to me.
1x08 "shiv part two": ultimate comfort episode for me. what if two autistic people had to go undercover? what if a woman tried to fuck a man under a sink? just a few of the many questions asked by this episode
2x04 "summer school chapter four": crusher and paula should be allowed to do whatever they want. also the scene where dickie gets in an argument with a child in a bookstore is pretty good
1x11 "shining knight": this is the best episode of the show. like full stop. this is the best one. it isn't the highest rated on imdb. it isn't my favorite. but it is 100% the best episode of the series.
3x12 "the last will and testament of sylvester pemberton": i have probably Never gone crazier at an episode of television in my life. getting to the ending is excruciating because the first chunk is a "pat experiences ableism" simulator but oh baby. when the musical sting hits it hits
1x02 "s.t.r.i.p.e.": this episode is nearly perfect. why is there a two minute long one-take sequence in the middle of it? don't ask questions
1x01 "stargirl"/"pilot": this is one of the best cape show pilots of all time. i think doom patrol's is better but it's easily on the flash pilot level, probably higher. tells you everything you need to know: courtney rules. pat has autism. if you celebrate christmas you WILL die of supervillains attacking you. what more can you ask for
2x03 "summer school chapter three": mike should be allowed to do whatever he wants whenever. you can tell how much fun everyone had shooting this so even if luke wilson is Not looking at his mark in the slightest it's still good.
1x10 "brainwave jr": i get why this is the highest ranked episode on imdb but it is funny that it set the tone for james robinson writing episodes where he kills people in a tunnel. the scene at the beginning with barb where she's struggling not to break down is an under-appreciated bit that is so fucking good.
1x03 "icicle": the tonal shift is great. i wish hootie had come back.
1x05 "hourman and doctor mid-nite": ending scene alone puts this here. thank you cameron gellman
1x06 "the justice society": i really like it when crusher throws paula as a weapon at a group of children
2x06 "summer school chapter six": the fight choreography is off the charts. i wish that isaac's actor knew how to act and eclipso didn't run away like that.
2x08 "summer school chapter eight": oh my g-d. oh my g-d. jesus christ. oh my fucking g-d
2x02 "summer school chapter two": dickie's entrance to the show means that despite how unmoved i am by much of this episode i will forever adore it. he is so deeply weird from second one.
3x02 "the suspects": i could watch dickie make fun of anybody for hours at a time
3x07 "infinity inc part one": i could watch dickie make fun of anybody for hours at a time
3x08 "infinity inc part two": i could watch dickie make fun of anybody for hours at a time. also CARCHARO MENTIONED
2x11 "summer school chapter eleven": courtney clapping at cindy and going "AND HOW DID THAT GO FOR YOU?" about controlling eclipso after they both get stuck in the monster dimension is one of the funniest scenes in the show
3x13 "the reckoning": way better finale than other cape shows, which is fortunate for me and unfortunate for those other shows. just a really nice sendoff. i like that they bring it full circle by having kids murder someone in this one, too.
1x07 "shiv part one": the fight choreography in the courtney/cindy fight is so good. i think it's overlooked because it's a 1v1 fight but that spinning long take is really fantastic imo and i love the setting of the school gym outfitted for the dance.
1x04 "wildcat": yolanda baby :(
2x09 "summer school chapter nine": yet another episode that's a "pat experiences ableism" simulator and it is upsetting to watch but also john wesley shipp is there and it's quite well done all around. points detracted because whatever his name is that plays cameron can't act to save his life and his scene partner (an actual teenager) is absolutely killing it
3x01 "the murder": extremely good episode i love my friends i genuinely smile so big thinking about it
1x12 "stars and s.t.r.i.p.e. part one": i want to fuck crusher so bad for that garage scene and that's why it ranks higher than the s1 finale
1x13 "stars and s.t.r.i.p.e. part two": what if there was a liberalification beam.
3x11 "the haunting": obviously the setup of this episode makes me want to punch walls but artemis' screaming and breakdown at the end puts this a cut above other episodes
2x07 "summer school chapter seven": YOLANDA BABY :(
2x01 "summer school chapter one": i can't stop thinking about that person on reddit who accidentally watched this episode first and was like "why is the show so bad at exposition" not realizing it's because they didn't see season one
1x09 "brainwave": good episode ranked this low because of the evil dinner scene being one of the worst things put to film
2x10 "summer school chapter ten": dickie is really good in this but i'm not a huge fan of this conflict for pat and courtney. however i do enjoy pat getting heated for once
2x12 "summer school chapter twelve": pat torturing matt rules and i like when beth and charles metaphorically type on the same keyboard to hack something faster
3x10 "the killer": fine episode. ranked this low because the last four minutes of it never aired and definitely don't make me listen to classic decemberists song "we both go down together" on repeat
2x13 "summer school chapter thirteen": jakeem rules mike rules rick calling in a buddy to fight for him rules but i don't care about eclipso
3x04 "the evidence": we're getting into episodes i don't really care for. i do like charles though
3x09 "the monsters": i don't care about dctv cameron
3x06 "the betrayal": i don't care about dctv cameron. however pat enjoying lutefisk is good
3x05 "the thief": i don't care about dctv cameron
2x05 "summer school chapter five": It's Just Not A Very Good Episode Guys i don't know what more you want from me
if you read through all of this thanks. several of these are actually tied with each other to be honest so if parts of this seem interchangeable, that's why.

The operating room. The thought of one can bring someone anxiety, but sometimes it can give someone an absolute thrill. It’s crystal clean to the point you can see your reflection in the marble floor, fluorescent lights blind you, and your nose is scrunched from the intense smell of disinfectant. Today, there are six brand new doctors who are positively giddy to be in one.
“Each of you comes here today hopeful, wanting in on the game. A month ago, you were in med school being taught by doctors. Today... you are the doctors,” The chief of surgery, Dr. Jim Hopper says, voice reverberating off the tile walls, “The seven years you spend here as a surgical resident will be the best and worst of your life. You will be pushed to the breaking point.”
Steve Harrington runs a hand along the tray that would hold the surgical tools, flinching slightly from the cold metal. It nearly sends a chill down his spine from the thought that soon, finally, he will be in one of these operating rooms performing life-saving surgeries.
“Look around you. Say hello to your competition,” Jim calls out, taking a moment to look at each of the six doctors looking amongst each other, “Two of you will switch to an easier specialty. One will crack under the pressure. One of you will be asked to leave.”
Jim had to go through a strict screening process, accepting these six people carefully. Of course, he had an idea who would flake out, who would crack, who he would eventually fire, but he kept his expectations high. After all, they didn’t just pass medical school without brain power and incredible effort.
“This is your starting line. This is your arena.” He says, giving the group a pointed look, “How well you play, that's up to you.”
Another doctor confidently strolls into the room, as if ready for battle, peaking the interest of the six interns. The doctor shares a nod with Jim and Jim leaves the room, allowing Dr. Murray Bauman to have the lead of the interns’ initiation.
“I am Dr. Murray Bauman, I am the head of the trauma department,” he says, giving the group a dramatic bow, “Now. I’ve got five rules and you best memorize them. Let’s get a move on, kiddos.”
Dr. Bauman turns on his heel and exits the O.R. with his coat fanning behind him like a cape. The six interns rush out of the room, pushing at each other to get out the door.
“Rule number one, don't bother sucking up. We already hate you and that's probably not changing. Ask me again in five years if any of you make it,” he muses before pointing out the six brand new phones on the nurses’ station, “Congrats, everyone. Free work phones. It is strictly for work, no extra curricular videos or texts, kiddos. Nurses will contact you, you answer every call or text at a run. A run, do you hear me? That's rule number two.”
Eddie Munson is the first to grab one of the shiny new phones. He had never had a new phone in his life because paying for med school was a priority.
“Your first shift starts now and lasts for the next forty-eight hours. As you know, you're interns. Thus, you’re grunts, nobodies, and the bottom of the surgical food chain.”
“In other good news, flattery works with me,” Eddie deadpanned, glancing over at Steve who was the closest to him.
“You will run labs, write orders, and work every second up until you feel like you’re ready to drop!”
Murray leads the group through the hallway, pointing out a specific door, “On call rooms. Sleep when you can and where you can. This brings me to rule number three, if you’re sleeping with each other, don’t bring your bullshit into the hospital. This is the big leagues, people, high school is over!”
Tommy Hagan and Carol Perkins tense up and inch away from each other, avoiding each other’s gaze. Steve curls his lip in disgust. He’d had his fill of the two of them during med school. The thought of them being gross at work was enough to make him start tasting that sesame bagel from this morning.
“Rule number four, if your attending is sleeping, don't wake them unless your patient is actually dying. That being said, said patient better not be dead when they get there. Time is of the essence and we like to cherish what little of it we have.”
Murray began to look over the group, trying to gauge their reactions, figure out who he was going to pair with who today. Then one of the interns raised her hand, sheepishly.
“Yes little orphan Annie?” Murray huffed, unimpressed that his plan was being interrupted.
“My name is Nicole,” she frowned, “But you said there are five rules and that was only four.”
Murray’s phone blipped with a message. A smirk spread across his face and he dangled his phone in their faces.
“Rule number five. When your attending moves, you move, too.”
Murray sprints down the hall, the six interns following closely behind. He led them to the E.R. where they were being met with a man curled up on a gurney.
“Okay, children, what do we do first?”
Carol is the first to pipe up, immediately spouting off various tests that should be run. Eddie gets the man on his back, checking the four quadrants of the abdomen. Steve starts asking the man questions to form a history.
“If his pain is on the right side, it could be his appendix. CT’s gonna take too long to check, we can do an ultrasound instead,” Steve says urgently, checking the man’s temperature, “Not to mention he’s febrile.”
Eddie looks up at the other three just standing there, “You just gonna stand there or are you gonna get the ultrasound in here?”
Murray smirks. Oh, he likes the fire in that one. He just might have to steal him away for trauma. Keith wheels the machine in, but trips and falls on his face, making Nicole yelp in surprise. Eddie cringes at the sight of Keith’s bloody nose and snatches up the gel to squirt onto the patient’s abdomen.
“Sorry, sir. This will be cold,” Eddie says, squeezing the bottle for an ample amount. Steve gets the machine on and hands the wand over to Eddie.
The three of them look at the screen, looking for any indications of what’s causing this man’s pain.
“There,” Carol speaks up, pointing to one of the corners of the screen. Eddie squints and moves the wand to get a better look.
“Would you look at that? It’s supposed to be a gallbladder but it looks like a sac of stones,” Eddie murmurs, looking back to Murray, “cholecystitis.”
Murray nearly looked impressed. Nearly. He then stepped out to make a call. Steve and Eddie shared a look amongst themselves. Did they just mess up? Why did he leave?  After they cleaned the man’s stomach and got him comfortable in bed, Murray returned.
“As you may know, the intern who shows the most promise gets to perform in the O.R. for the first time,” Murray says, hands clasped behind his back. In walks another doctor, one many of the interns knew, one who inspired most of them during med school. Dr. Joyce Byers, the head of general surgery. “Now, lucky for you all, I was able to make a quick judgment based on this case alone. Dr. Byers will be shadowing one of you lucky ducks as you perform your very first surgery, a chole.”
The six interns gasped, Tommy and Carol, namely. Steve watched with doe eyes, silently hoping it would be him. There was no way it was going to be Keith, that much was certain.
“Congrats, Guns n’ Roses, today’s your lucky day.”
Eddie’s jaw dropped in disbelief as he stepped forward to shake both Murray’s and Joyce’s hands, thanking them for the opportunity.
“Now, freckles, Cheeto dust, and orphan Annie, I don’t want you two touching anyone else for the rest of the day, so you’re going to the gallery to watch Munson and maybe, hopefully you’ll learn something,” Murray says, clapping Eddie on the back as he walks by, not sparing a second glance at the three interns who have already disappointed him today.
“C’mon, Dr. Munson, I’ll take you down to the scrub room,” Joyce smiles like a literal angel. No wonder she was so widely renowned, and not only for her talent. Keith, Nicole, and Tommy followed behind, ashamed that they were only to be present in the gallery.
Murray turns back to the remaining two interns, eyes narrowing.
“Swayze and loud-mouth, you didn’t disappoint me just now. Therefore, as a kindness, I will be introducing you to the head of our cardiothoracic department, Dr. Newby.”
Now, Steve couldn’t quite complain about that. Robert Newby was nearly as renowned as Joyce Byers, and to have the opportunity to work with so many great surgeons… Well, there aren’t enough words to convey such a feeling.
Inside the scrub room, Eddie was lathered in soap, still in disbelief that he was about to do his first surgery on his first day as a doctor. He expected it to be weeks later. Yet here he was, alongside Joyce Byers.
Joyce quizzed him on the steps of a chole procedure, making sure he wasn’t totally in over his head. So far he seemed collected enough she wasn’t worried he was overly confident or too nervous. A happy medium. If he choked, though, she was ready to step in and take over. This wasn’t the first intern she has worked with and trained, nor would he be the last.
Once efficiently scrubbed and rinsed, Joyce and Eddie entered the operating room. It wasn’t empty like when the chief first introduced them, no. There were plenty of people moving like a well oiled machine- an anesthesiologist, scrub nurse, circulating nurse, the patient, now soon to add two surgeons.
“Hello, everyone. This is Dr. Munson and he will be attempting his first surgery this afternoon,” Joyce chimes as the scrub nurse begins to glove both her and Eddie, “Interns in the gallery? Please pay close attention. This will be you in the weeks to come.”
Eddie turns to look up at the faces in the gallery- Tommy, Nicole, and Keith, his fellow interns. There are other doctors he has yet to meet, some residents and attendings. The pressure is certainly on.
Joyce steps aside to the assistant surgeon position, allowing room for Eddie. He steps up, giving her curious eyes. Honestly, he’s in disbelief that he’s actually doing this.
“Alright, doctor. Which tool are you choosing?” she asks, eyes upturned in a smile above her mask.
Eddie takes a breath, “Ten blade, please,” he says, turning to the scrub nurse with an open hand.
Meanwhile in the cardiothoracic department, Steve and Carol join Dr. Newby during his rounds of patients. Most would expect this floor to be full of elderly patients, when really, there are patients of all ages.
Currently there’s a woman who is struggling with complications after a coronary bypass. The nurse is shouting out a series of symptoms for Dr. Newby to care for- plummeted blood pressure, v-tach, sky-high central venous pressure, and she’s maxed out on meds. Steve watches, mouth agape.
Medical school was one thing. They practiced on people who were already dead, but there was something about actually watching someone potentially die that was far more haunting. Carol watched, hands covering her mouth. Thank god Dr. Newby wasn’t calling them in to help.
Blood clot.
Next thing they know, the woman is being flayed open in her room because there’s no time to get her back down to the operating room. Dr. Newby moves expertly, removing the clot with his hands rather than a suction. Steve and Carol had never seen anything like it.
Then the heart monitor rings out that high pitched sound. She’s flatlining and no amount of massaging her heart or shocks from the internal paddles is helping. She’s gone and Steve just watched her die. Literally see the moment the life left her body.
“Time of death, 14:39.”
Steve can’t hear Carol call out for him because his ears are ringing. He can’t hear the nurse ask him if he’s okay because his head is suddenly pounding. He doesn’t notice the lady looking shocked by his appearance as he shoves himself through the door of the nearest bathroom. And he certainly doesn’t notice anything else as he flings himself down to the nearest toilet as that sesame bagel from this morning finally makes its appearance back into the world.
Meanwhile Eddie’s in the O.R. riding on a high as he knots the last stitch for his patient after a successful chole. Joyce is incredibly impressed, as most interns flub their first surgery.
Murray was right in choosing this one, she thinks. He’s going to be special.

Hey, Ace! How are you?
Do you have any whump recs for the asthma trope? It could be in books or movies/shows.
I'm doing well!! Thanks for asking! Finally got some good news lately after a really shitty month and a half.
Yuki Sohma from Fruits Basket has asthma and has a bad attack in the 2019 reboot anime 1x09. That's the scene in the manga where I realized I like whump.
I don't know how whumpy some of these are but Scott McCall from Teen Wolf has asthma. Look at 1x01 1x08 5x06 and 5x10, The Adam Project has a quick scene where younger Adam has an asthma attack and older Adam helps him with it cause that's him. The Osgoods from Doctor Who have asthma and use their inhalers a lot. Hal from Outlander book 8 Written in My Own Hearts Blood has an asthma attack and Claire treats him. Tara in the new Scream movies has asthma.
For some fanfics:
The Office. Trigger by petersnotkingyet Summary: Jim has an asthma attack playing soccer with Charles Minor. It's a really bad time for his inhaler to run out.
Fruits Basket. a lesson in medication compliance by combustible_lemons Summary: Yuki forgets his inhaler at home under the worst possible circumstances.
The O.C. BREATHE by albfic Summary: Ryan's childhood asthma comes back...

                            Everything You Hold Dear
Summary: For the first time in awhile, blissful rest had finally found Jim Hopper. He laid there, lost in his dreams. It was only when the panicked shouting of his wife ruthlessly yanked him out from the darkness and into the cold light that he realized a new, living nightmare had only just begun. "Hopper, where's Will?!"
(AU that follows the story if Jopper was canon prior to 1x01 and how that would completely change the canonical story we know).
Rating: T
Ship: Joyce/Hopper (Jopper)
Read on: FFN and AO3
A/N: So this is my first attempt at a Stranger Things fanfic. Basically, this is an AU where Jopper has been canon since 1x01 making him the biological father of both Will and Jonathan and how this alters the canon verse as we know it. I thought about incorporating Sara into the story, but it didn't work out the way I would've liked so she never existed. Oh yes, I decided to continue to have Joyce called Hopper "Hopper" because I like it like that haha. Alrighty, enough of my chatter, here we go! Comments, hearts, and reblogs are greatly loved and appreciated. If you wished to be tagged for future updates, please let me know! -Jen
                                                Chapter One
Jim Hopper ignored the numbness that came with the bitter cold morning as he stood on his back porch overlooking the lake. He was on his second cigarette, the first crushed and forgotten on the railing. Later, he'd try to remind himself, to toss it away inside. For now, the chief of police sought comfort in the remaining precious minutes before the sun rose over the horizon.
It had been a rough night, not that sleep often came easy. Another dream, another nightmare from the war that mentally he wondered if he'd ever come back home from. The doctors said it was post traumatic stress disorder, that he wasn't alone in this suffering. That he should reach out, seek help. But he sure as hell wouldn't dare to ever drag Joyce down with him. She didn't need to know what he saw. What he did. He loved her too much to subject her to such horrors. Even though she practically begged him time and time again to open up. He wouldn't do that to her. Ever.
Tapping on his cigarette, he inhaled deeply. Soon both kids would be up wanting breakfast and despite the fact that he would be leaving for work well before both Jonathan and Joyce, he'd designated Sundays as his day to cook. Waffles-or "Willfles" as Will had so proudly dubbed them when he was learning to talk. Something that now only embarrassed his pre-teen son.
The thought caused the corners of his mouth to twitch upwards into a small smile. He was lucky and realized that. A wife and two sons, something he made sure he'd never take for granted. All the pain, the bad dreams, they made everything worth it. They were the light at the end of a dark tunnel, a rope that pulled him out of the deepest of holes. He loved them so much it hurt, but that in itself was a good kind of pain. The best pain. One that he was more than willing to endure.
"Hop?"
The sound of Joyce's voice snapped Hopper out of his trance. He turned to find his wife standing in the open doorway, slipper-less and wearing the old, purple bathrobe he'd gotten her last Christmas. A look of concern was etched across her features as she studied him.
"Hey." He greeted, clearing his throat as he put out the cigarette. "What are you doing out here?"
"I could ask you the same." Joyce responded, stepping out onto the deck. "I woke up and you weren't in bed. I was worried." Hugging her arms around her chest, she made her way to her husband's side. "Are you okay?"
"Couldn't sleep." That really was the truth. "So I came out here for a smoke. Nice weather for it." That wasn't.
"Hopper…"
"I'm fine. Really." Hopper could feel Joyce's stare burning into him. She could read him like a book-something he could never decide if he loved or hated. "Stop looking at me like that. Keep it up and your mind will be so focused on me it'll forget how to regulate temperature. You'll get hypothermia."
His wife snorted softly. "And this information is coming from…"
"Ms. Ratliff," he shrugged, trying to hide his smile. "Or I could've heard wrong. You know I've always hated science."
"Clearly."
Silence fell between them as the sun began to barely peek over the skyline. Hopper's arm wound around Joyce's waist as he pulled her closer. Decades they'd known each other. Since childhood. And yet, it didn't feel like it had been that long. The older they got, time seemed to blur with each passing day. She was his person and he was her's.
"You know you can always talk to me right? About anything?" There was a hint of desperation in her tone. A sense of pleading he wouldn't allow himself to give in to. "There's nothing you can say that'll change how I feel or whatever you're so worried about that might happen. Hopper, I-"
"I know that, Joyce." He interrupted, cutting her off before she could finish. "I'm fine. I promise."
Joyce let out a sigh of defeat and Hopper felt a small pang of guilt over her distress. He despised putting a wedge like this between them. Creating distance. Attempting to move past the subject, he pressed a kiss to the top of her head.
"Hey, sun's coming up and I was thinking about maybe going all out for breakfast? Eggs, bacon, maybe some of that fruit we've had crammed in the back of the fridge that's about to go bad? …Willfles?"
If smiles could light up a room then hers could illuminate a mansion. One of the many, many things he adored about her. "Will you wear the apron?" Hopper's eyes narrowed, his frown only making her grin grow. "C'mon, for me?"
The infamous yellow and pink floral apron. Something their household had acquired during the police station's annual Christmas party. It had been an anonymous gift exchange, but something about the way Flo was smiling when he first set his eyes on it made it easy to put two and two together. As if he already hadn't had enough mockery to deal with that night from the ugly Christmas sweater his wife had coaxed him into.
"I'm gonna get rid of that thing one of these days." He grumbled, ushering her back inside before closing the door behind them. "When you aren't here to rescue it."
"Then I'll just get a new one." Joyce stated bluntly with a shrug. "Maybe I'll ask Karen where she got hers." Smirking softly, she poked his chest with her index finger. "Magenta has always suited you, and that checkered pattern…"
Joyce's words were cut short as Hopper pulled her in for a kiss, officially putting an end to the apron decision. She giggled and again he couldn't help but smile. The thoughts that had previously plagued him had begun to slip back into the shadows. He wanted nothing more to melt into their embrace, fingers curled in her messy bed hair. His eyes closed and the idea of pulling her back into their bedroom and collapsing onto their mattress sounded better than a winning lottery ticket.
"Just so you know, I'm right here."
Hopper and Joyce turned to see their eldest son standing a few feet away from them. Jonathan, still clearly half asleep, watched them bleary eyed. Throwing Joyce a small smirk, he made his way towards the kitchen giving his kid a quick pat on the shoulder as he went.
"You're up early." He commented, going to start a pot of coffee. "I thought you'd sleep in a bit longer since you don't have to be out the door at the crack of dawn. Thought I'd make some breakfast and get you up after."
Jonathan shrugged and he shuffled in after Joyce. "I woke up and couldn't fall back asleep."
"Seems to be a common problem in this family," his mother replied. "It's beautiful outside today. Maybe you could take some pictures before you go to work. I've been meaning to update the ones I have at work. You know how much people like to see them. I get so many compliments. And there is always your dad's office. Right, Hopper?"
"Hm?" He hadn't exactly been paying attention to what was being said but whatever it was, Joyce was giving him that look so nodded in agreement. "Yeah, kid. Sure."
Growing up, Hopper's relationship with his own father was strained. They never really connected on any sort of level, not that either party put any effort into it. That was one of the many reasons he promised himself he'd be a better parent even before the subject of kids was broached between him and Joyce. Something that he had learned early on wasn't always a walk in the park.
Fishing around the fridge for what he needed, Hopper began the task of cooking for his family. He could feel Joyce's eyes following him as she sipped contently from her mug.
"Like what you see?" He asked, not looking up from the eggs he was scrambling.
"A free show with a complimentary meal isn't something to complain about, that's for sure." She placed her cup on the counter. "Are you sure you don't need a sous chef?"
"And be even more distracted by you?" He snorted, throwing her a side glance. "Not a chance." Setting the eggs off of the side, Hopper paused. "But I guess it wouldn't hurt to enlist some help with the waffle batter. Got any references?"
"Does my husband count?" She asked, feigning innocence.
Hopper pretended to hesitate. "Guess if I have to…" Grabbing a spoon, he held it out to Joyce. "Don't make me fire you." His wife rolled her eyes and he gave her a lopsided grin. "The floor is yours."
With two people in the kitchen, the prepping time lessened and soon enough a skillet full of eggs, a tray of crispy bacon, a bowl of fruit, and a steaming heap of waffles were sprawled out across the counter. Hopper exhaled, wiping his sweaty brow with the back of his hand. It looked good enough. Hopefully it would taste the same too.
"Jonathan, go wake your brother up." Joyce called out as the teenager rose up from his spot on the couch. "Tell him it's time for breakfast."
Hopper's eyes followed his son as he sauntered out of sight. When Jonathan turned of age to get a job, he'd been glad. The kid had always been a loner, far more interested in spending his time doing photography than enjoying the company of others. He'd hoped with his new gig that maybe he'd make some friends. People other than Will. Not that there was anything wrong with their tight bond. He and Joyce after all wanted to make sure they didn't have just one child as they both had been only children. But that wish of Jonathan finally being in with a group of his peers fell through. And while it didn't seem to concern his wife so much, he did for him a lot.
"You think maybe we should've waited to let him get a job?" He asked once he was sure Jonathan was out of earshot. "I've just been thinking maybe we get him involved with something else."
"Like sports?" Joyce frowned as she grabbed a stack of plates. "Hopper, we've talked about this. We aren't going to force either of the boys into something they don't want to do. Besides," she glanced towards the doorway. "He doesn't seem unhappy at all. He likes working at the movie theater. It's good for him."
"I know. I just…all I'm trying to get at is I want what's good for him. Both of them." Hopper turned back to the food in an attempt to busy himself.
"They're good kids," Joyce assured him, resting a hand on his arm. "We've raised them well."
Hopper shrugged and turned towards her. "Gotta give most of the credit to you in that department. Your parenting instincts kicked in before Jonathan was even born."
As if on cue, Jonathan entered the room once more only now joined by Will. Hopper watched as his son's eyes lit up as he took in the spread before him. Despite being skinner than a twig, the boy had a bottomless stomach with an appetite to boot.
"Mm, good morning." Joyce smiled, pulling Will into a tight hug. You sleep okay? Dad made Willfles."
Will made a face, his expression of irritation only deepening as Jonathan chuckled from behind. "Can we just call them waffles? I'm not a little kid anymore."
"But it's just so sweet," his mother replied. "I love Willfles."
"Well I don't." He responded.
"Okay, okay, we hear you." Hopper said, grabbing a spatula. "...So I guess that means you don't want any?"
There was no hesitation as Will quickly snatched up a plate. Hopper smiled, throwing his wife a triumphant look as he placed a waffle on the kid's plate.
Once they had all filled their plates, the family of four gathered around their small dining room table. Hopper took a large swig of his coffee and glanced down at yesterday's newspaper he had left haphazardly folded before him. Hawkins' news always proved to be boring. Nothing ever exciting or out of the ordinary making its way into the quiet town. It made his job as the chief of police easy.
"Mike said his mom said it was okay if Dustin, Lucas, and I came over to play D&D today." Will said, looking from Joyce to Hopper. "Can I go?"
"Did you finish your homework?" Hopper asked, stabbing his fork into his eggs.
It was a ridiculous question he already knew the answer to. Will definitely didn't inherit his focus on academics from him. When it came to his youngest, Hopper often found himself struggling to connect with the boy on many levels. Will was…different. Different in a good way. A wonderful way. But still he found it hard to level with him. He tried though. Tried to be there in the best way he could. Attempted to learn the ways of this fantasy board game his son loved. Expressed interest in the kid's art. Yet still he felt like he was somehow failing him. That he wasn't being there as much as he should be. Joyce relentlessly assured him that he was a good father. A good man. But deep down he doubted her words.
"I finished it all on Friday," Will replied, pulling Hopper out of his thoughts. "So, can I go?"
Hopper glanced over at his wife who nodded. "Alright, ride your bike over there and when I get off from work, I'll come pick you up and we can throw it into the back of my truck. But when it's time to go, I want you to be ready." He took another sip of coffee before clearing his throat. "I don't want his mom trying to set up me and his dad on a playdate." Not that Ted was much of a talker anyway. "Okay?"
"Hopper."
The disapproval in Joyce's tone made it clear that she found his choice of words undesirable. He gave her a small shrug before returning to his meal.
"Okay!" Will agreed, more than happy to abide by his father's terms and conditions. "I won't make you wait."
The boy began to shovel down his food so fast that Hopper began to worry he'd choke on something. Chugging down his orange juice, Will haphazardly grabbed his dirty dishes and hurried to the sink.
"Hey, slow down before you trip and hurt yourself!" The chief called out after his kid. "Were you planning to say goodbye?"
Will shuffled back over and soon found himself pulled into Joyce's tight embrace.
"Mom, let go! It isn't like you're not going to see me again." Will protested, trying to wiggle out of his mother's arms. "I can't breathe!"
"I'm sorry," Joyce sighed, pulling back. Holding him out at arms length she smiled. "You're just growing up so fast. Soon you'll be driving a car just like Jonathan."
"Maybe you can work at the theater too." His brother replied. "We can carpool."
Hopper opened his mouth to join in on the conversation when the telephone rang behind him. Sharing a look with Joyce, he stood up and walked over to it and answered.
"Hello?"
"Chief, it's Flo." The station's secretary sounded flat on the other end. "Sorry if I interrupted anything, but you are needed downtown at the intersection of Main and Mulberry? We've got a fender bender. Accident's not bad but the drivers are worked up. Callahan and Powell just got might want to get here quickly."
He grimaced at her words already feeling a headache coming on. "Yeah, alright. Just give me fifteen minutes. I'll head on out."
"Great, I'll radio in and let them know," Flo replied. "Oh, and give Joyce my best."
"Is everything okay?" Joyce asked as he hung the phone back up. "Is anyone hurt?"
"Nah," Hopper exhaled, abandoning his breakfast as he retrieved his hat and jacket. "Just two idiots who don't know how to drive." He walked over and gave her a kiss. "Real concern is a fight breaking out. Oh and Flo says hi."
"They're lucky to have you, Hop." His wife smiled, pulling him in for another kiss much to their boys' dismay. "Since we all have different schedules tonight, there's lasagne in the fridge if anyone wants to heat that up for dinner. We really need to finish it off."
"Sounds good." Turning to Jonathan, he placed a hand on his shoulder and gave him a squeeze. "Have a good day at work, kid. Feel free to bring your old man home any leftover popcorn you have lying around. Stuff's addicting." And probably artery clogging too. Hopper walked over to Will and pulled his youngest into a side hug. "You have fun with the boys. I'll pick you up later, alright?"
Will smiled up at him and nodded. "Okay."
Grabbing his keys from where they were laying in a dish on the counter, he met his wife's gaze once more. Her features were soft and he found himself transfixed by those deep brown eyes he'd loved since those many, many years ago they'd met. Joyce smiled and mouthed I love you. She didn't even need to talk for him to know what it would've sounded like.
"I love you too." And he met every syllable he said. "I'll see you later."
Throwing one final glance at his family, Hopper made his way to the door and exited the house. The sun, though bright in the sky, still didn't offer much warmth as the chief got into his car. Hopper grunted as he shifted in his seat, finding his seat buckle to click himself in. It was going to be one hell of a long day. He didn't need to feel it. He knew it.
