If you want to read the Maze Runner books, but the size of the universe is intimidating, here’s my recommendation.
Obviously, you’d need the main trilogy, The Maze Runner, The Scorch Trials and The Death Cure. But after that is where it gets optional and interesting.
The Kill Order is the origin of WICKED and the flare, and is very good for anyone who wants more exposition and world-building. As well as a deeper look into Teresa and her motivations.
The Fever Code is the origin of the maze and the gladers. It’s very bts-heavy, and dives deep into Thomas’ motivations, as well as his relationships, not only with his friends, but the people in charge as well. It’s also where you want to go if you want more backstory on Newt, both his life before WICKED and during. Also if you just wanna see Newt living rent free in Thomas’ head for three hundred-something pages.
Crank Palace is for us mentally ill Newt-girlies (gender neutral) who just want to see him happy and loved, and is somehow naive enough to think we’ll get the former in this novella.
The sequel series is also heavy on what was going on behind the scenes for Newt, but it’s a whole other commitment, especially since it’s an ongoing series. I’d mostly recommend it if you read everything else and miss the universe and want to go back. I will say, tho, Crank Palace is imperative to these two books.
There’s also the short e-book, The Maze Runner Files, which contains some exposition, and some short stories about Thomas, Minho and Frypan.
Now, everything I listed that isn’t the main trilogy is a fully optional read, they are not necessary. However! I will list the entire series, both in chronological order and my recommended first-time-reading order, in case anyone else might want to try all of it.
So the chronological order goes as follows:
The Kill Order, The Fever Code, The Maze Runner, The Scorch Trials, The Death Cure, The Maze Runner Files, Crank Palace, The Maze Cutter, The Godhead Complex
And for my recommended reading order for first time readers:
The Maze Runner, The Scorch Trials, The Death Cure, The Kill Order, The Fever Code, The Maze Runner Files, Crank Palace, The Maze Cutter, The Godhead Complex
TLDR
The Maze Runner, The Scorch Trials and The Death Cure are must-reads
The Kill Order is for world building and Teresa
The Fever Code is for maze building, Thomas and Newt
The Maze Runner Files is an add-on that is wholly unnecessary for understanding the context of any of the books, but is just kinda fun
Crank Palace is for Newt and being very very depressed
The Maze Cutter and The Godhead Complex is for continuing in the universe, longing for Newt and depression

just started the maze cutter and i know i’ll have to get used to the new scenery. one thing i like, though, is the respect put on minho’s name. i feel like the easy thing for dashner to do would’ve been to name a character thomas or newt. because they’re the white boys of the month the most recognizable characters. you mention newt from the maze runner and people are screaming and pounding their fists. they want a better ending for him. they want to see thomas’ name again, because he was the protagonist of the original series. he’s recognizable and easy to replicate. instead, dashner chose minho to be the character that gets named after. the orphan who names themself after minho believes that they’re worthy of the name. meaning that some people find respect in his name and his story. that’s something i love to see. minho was an integral part of the original story, he was there with thomas every step of the way. yet he was always pushed away due to the white protagonist. dashner is giving him a living legacy that could’ve easily been laid out for either newt or thomas.

I want to express something on here about newt from the maze runner book series.
SPOILERS FOR THE MAZE CUTTER:
As someone who's enjoyed maze runner for around two years now, and also as someone who over analyzes everything I've come to learn that a lot of the maze runner content is made to trick not only the characters but the readers.
In the movies it's made more apparent when a trick is coming up or when something is about to fool the characters. The element of surprise is saved on for deaths and such. Which is usually what happens in movies. While in the books, death is built up to, if not warranted carefully to each character. It makes the death less shocking but all the more heartbreaking. You learn to love the character the way they are in their final stages and then love them when they are gone from the series.
Which has made the maze cutter, SO difficult for me to read. I loved newt every since I first watched the maze runner, and I loved him through all the books. I came to accept his death, becauase I enjoyed seeing the plotline and the build up, The disagreement and the way James put his entire heart into writing newts descent and how horribley he'd been affected by the virus.
The maze cutter has thrown all this off the table, everything we knew about newt, everything we thought we had figured out was a lie. Not only was newt, the character, tricked but so were we. We were so caught up in the cascade of newts death that we ignored the obvious signs in the books that led to the maze cutter.
- Ava Paige following newt, keeping tabs on him. Along with Janson (death cure)
- her anticipating newts moves and sending gaurds to Keisha brothers house, newts destination, to get him to "film something" (never disclosed what this was for) (crank Palace)
- Ava had palace gaurds and people living there talking about newt. Even when he was around. (Crank Palace)
- ava requested newt not be killed, even though Thomas would supposedly never be apart of his journey again. (Crank Palace)
- his last moments Ava revealed she has tried so hard to save him but would keep studying him (crank Palace)
- Ava spend priceless resource's and time helping newt in the facility as a child. She had hundreds of immunes but was so tedious and careful with newt, for no reason. (the fever code)
So the real question is, was newt being the cure all apart of this elaborate, very well built out plan that we just didn't see. Newts death was to cover this entire elaborate scheme, we were tricked. The element of shock was not supposed to be his death but his evolvement with wicked.
And even so, what does the godhead plan on doing with newts DNA and Sadina? Do they plan to revive newt, perhaps even Sonya. Make a clone of him? ( Taking into consideration that newt was called A4 at the end of TMC when he is A5, and it was confirmed not a mistake)
Is newts sorrowful return the element of shock we never got?

while my relationship with the maze runner fandom is strained, i cannot deny my love for the literary and cinematic universe. i think i read it at just the right time where it became formative, and i am very attached to the concept. i can talk later about how it’s hard for me to engage as a fan in the space, but for now let’s stay light and rank all pieces of maze runner media, from worst to best.
WORST:
9. the maze cutter. nobody asked for this. nobody wanted dashner to retcon the entire fucking series we liked. if you wanted this, in theory, i promise you don’t want it in practice.
8. the kill order. what an epic waste of paper.
7. the maze runner (book). i know it’s a crime to put the original so low, but it’s just boring now in context of the rest
6. the maze runner (movie). it’s not bad. it’s even pretty good. but i never rewatch it
5. the death cure (movie). so what if it’s a bastardized version. it’s fun, okay? they lift a bus with a fucking crane.
4. the scorch trials (movie). the last scenes are epic and really save it, and the action and visuals are great.
3. the death cure (book). i’ve read this so many times. it does lag in the middle though, but it’s still great and really satisfying
2. the scorch trials (book). never get tired of this. one of the few trilogy books that doesn’t suffer from middle child syndrome
BEST:
1. the fever code. it’s the prequel we all wanted, and for the most part, it delivered.

i'm online book shopping (i've read two books in the past two weeks, with another started, and i'm in the mood for certain books that i do not own anymore unread ones of)
was anyone going to tell me that the maze runner has a spin-off series. why. i thought the ending was so good (if devastating, which is probably the only reason keeping me from re-reading it). i truly do not know what to say
