Ostinato (update)
Tumblr media
(commissioned artwork of Lachlan Shepard and Kaidan Alenko by @me1onmi1k)
Guess who started whispering into my ear today!
Going through some old (and I mean OLD!) prompts to see what I can come up with! (so old I can't even find the original ask for it!)
Prompt: In the moonlight/celebration
On AO3 in full here
OTP: The Music Lives On found here
Excerpt:
Lachlan once heard that night skies are the best skies because they hold secret and safe the stories of the different worlds they envelope.  He’s been under many night skies over the years.  The double moons of Mindoir.    Terra Nova for one night before all hell broke loose.  The unpolluted darkness out at the Alenko orchard.  Numerous other worlds over the years of serving with the Alliance.
But the night sky of Elysium, at this moment in time, is the most brilliant and beautiful and he never wants to forget it.
A heavy glass clinks lightly with ice as it’s pressed into his hand and the peaty aroma tickles his nose.  Smiling, Lachlan leans back as his husband’s arm wraps around him and he sighs softly, humming his appreciation.  Kaidan clinks their glasses together, laughter filling Lachlan’s ears.  “To us.”
“Hmm.  To us.”  Lachlan straightens to sip his drink, savoring the taste as he continues to look up at the star-lit sky.  Turning, he rests his hips against the balcony railing and focuses his gaze on Kaidan.  “D’you ever think about how damned lucky we are?”

ok so i recognize that shelby said in her stream today that witchcraft joey and pirate joe are not the same person. however, 1. @pixlostinatos and i were having this conversation before we knew about this and 2. this is funnier, so we're gonna pretend.
so we were talking about the implications of shelby and joey's endings, and the fact that, in his episode 3 of witchcraft, joey makes a remark about being "a pirate in a past life" (around the 31 minute mark)
we came to, like, two extended conclusions.
joey's ending for season 2 is akin to his season 1 ending. it was all a hallucination/dream, and he's just dead now. this is not in tone with the rest of the season, and as such, very unlikely, and less fun for all involved.
his ending is NOT a hallucination, and he just dies somehow in between the finale and the start of witchcraft. don't worry about it.
however, if he's reincarnated as witch!joey the Normal way (y'know, being born as a new person), that makes witch!joey, at most, 11 years old. and while it is hilarious to consider that all these adults took the competition with this 11 year old totally seriously, it's also... no. no i'm not doing that.
so, we decided that at some point in witch!joey's life, the soul of pirate joe just got shoved into his brain due to the whims of the universe. cause why not. it's kinda funny.
this leaves two options for how that went about, in our eyes.
the reasonable option: this is why witch!joey developed his fire powers. universe said "here's some new, antithetical powers, and a new soul to mix with yours. have fun!" he figured this out at some point in his life through normal reasons, perhaps by seeing shelby for the first time and being like "hold on, i know her. why am i a pirate in the memories i have with her."
the FUNNY option, and the reason i made this post: witch!joey and pirate joe's souls got combined at some point when he was a kid, and literally no one noticed, including witch!joey, for multiple years. witch!joey (canonically gay) only figured out something had happened when he briefly remembered katherine and was like "wait a second".

So, thanks to the Master Duel new/returning player campaign, I decided to return to Master Duel to farm gems and prepare myself for the arrival of the Melodious cards. Lamentably, because of no Konami account, I had to start over.
And I just decided to do one or maybe two multis on the Melodious pack to prepare.

Jantra - Synthesized Sudan: Astro-Nubian Electronic Jaglara Dance Sounds from the Fashaga Underground
Near the border of Sudan, Eritrea, and Ethiopia, a disputed area called Fashaga is home to one of the most raucous, hypnotic, addictive, and celestial dance musics being made anywhere in Africa, perhaps the least known to the wider world of them all. Far from the townships of South Africa or the cities of Nigeria, this sound belongs to people intimately tied to their land, deep in the rural areas of Sudan. Known in some circles as “Jaglara,” this mysterious cosmic dance music is being innovated by one man, named Jantra, which translates as “craziness,” a moniker bestowed to celebrate both his personality and sound. Jantra cuts a mysterious figure, a rather unknown quantity even in Sudan, outside of the select few circles which have granted him cult status to perform at their humble gatherings or at street parties far from the gaze of the wider world.  Never without his trusty blue Yamaha keyboard, Jantra joins a wave of synthesizer maestros across Africa revolutionizing the electronic sound of the continent. His dexterous fingers and street side raves in his home town of Gedarif near the Sudan-Ethiopia border caught the attention of a less privileged segment of Sudanese society who became infatuated. But you wouldn’t stumble across one of his parties unless you knew where to look, and they take place where few ever care to look. Jantra has no songs. He simply freestyles a combination of his melodies incessantly for hours on end, acting as a live producer and DJ for emphatic crowds in compact spaces, where the energy of his 155-168 BPM music is known to inspire the odd gunslinger to raise his pistol in the middle of the dance floor, ready to fire away a few shots into the air when the build up reaches climax. His Yamaha keyboard, like most keyboards, is not made in Africa and not tuned to cater to Sudanese rhythms or melodies. It required special tweaks from legendary keyboard mechanics in Omdurman market outside of the capital Khartoum who service, maintain, and jolt these synths to work for their aesthetics and flavor profile. Jantra then further tweaks the sound to achieve what you’re hearing — the perfect, sweet key tone, literally universal in its appeal. To produce this album, the Ostinato team pioneered a new approach: a hybrid reissue-contemporary album. Jantra had made a few cassette and digital recordings in his early days. We used excerpts from those and followed him to his legendary parties on the outskirts of the outskirts of the capital. Using a special technique devised by Ostinato producer Janto Koité, we extracted the individual melodic patterns, rhythms, as well as the MIDI data, and combined them with older recordings to recreate his lengthy sessions into individual dance tracks for a worldwide audience to reach the enviable frenzy of Sudanese crowds. This promising new dance music emerging from the deepest reaches of Sudan has never made its way outside of Jantra’s parties, let alone outside of the country, and never been professionally recorded. This record is confirmation that the many electronic styles being exported from Africa have a new worthy sibling and rival — Jantra’s signature electronic Jaglara from the Fashaga underground. It is a privilege of the highest order to be exposed to this unheralded, incredibly well kept rural Sudanese secret. Use unsparingly at your Synth Maestro: Ahmed Mohamed Yaqoup Eltom aka Jantra Produced & Arranged by Vik Sohonie & Janto Koité Recording & Data Extraction by Janto Koité Artwork by Mahammed El Mekki

(If for some reason this doesn't play for you, I have it here, too...)
So I finally did it--I created a Tumblr Frog Song!!! It took me all month 'cuz the way these froggies sing made it really difficult to construct something coherent 😭
First off, I typed out what pitches each frog sang and numbered them...
Tumblr media
Then I had to sit and think about how to make a song out of these froggies who sing two pitches consecutively each time, a fourth apart... 🤔
I finally came up with this little repeating pattern today, and--thanks to copy and paste and digital playback--I created a layered ostinato of sorts (John Cage and Steve Reich, eat your heart out!)...
Tumblr media
Here are the different layers typed out in Tumblr-notation...
Tumblr media
Now when I imported the layers into my DAW, I ran into trouble--because these little froggies don't like to keep the same tempo with each other!!! But, using my tools, I "cheated" a little and forced them to at least come slightly more together in tempo... But I didn't want to change them all too much, otherwise it sounded less like frogs and more like annoying robots... which at times they almost do anyway... 😂
Here's the scene of the chopped up layers in my DAW...
Tumblr media
___________________________
At any rate, I hope this makes you giggle a little today 😜
And in the meantime, if you wanna hear a real Frog Song I did during the Lockdowns, check out Chant de Grenouille sur la Lune on your favorite platform....
