WARNING SPOILERS FOR “THE FIRST WALL”
The cover fluttered from Zenobi’s grasp and the banner unfurled as she waved the pole, greeted by a roar from the troopers arrayed along the roadway. The voxmitter picked up her cry as the cloth straightened to reveal a red flag, a black stylised eye embroidered upon it, the names of thousands of Addaba families stitched in long lines beneath.
‘For freedom! For Addaba!’ she shouted as las-fire ripped into life around her. A series of sharp detonations echoed across the base, plumes of yellow fire erupting within the tank columns and artillery batteries from demolition charges concealed that morning. ‘For the Warmaster!’
Excerpt From
The First Wall
The first wall is probably .. 3rd favorite siege of Terra book. Granted that ranking isn’t high but considering all the books have been extremely good… you spend the whole book following Zenobi, go through her basic training, watch her survive trial after trial, the whole time protecting this banner. She finds love with a leman russ tank commander. You hear her talk with passion about not wanting her home to fall under the rule of a tyrant.. you think “wow what an emperor loving person” and then.. you get that.. the rest of her company and her were loyal to horus, likely recruited indirectly by the alpha legion. She finally unfurls her banner as they destroy the precious reinforcements rogal dorn had secured away…

The Warmaster- Part 8
Eleven: Forge World Urdesh
"Lightning sizzled like trace veins in the dead flesh of the sky." I know it's Warhammer, but why does every landscape have to be described in the most visceral, grim way possible?
"On both ships, the bridge crews stood and made the sign of the aquila, facing the direction of the other vessel as the Armaduke crossed beside its illustrious cousin." I doubt they could see each other, but it's the thought that counts.
"The south shore approach to the harbour was lined with derelict food mills and the rafts of rusting bulk harvester boats that had once processed the algae and weed for food." Tasty.
"In places, rivets sheared under the pressure, and hull seams popped, venting gas and releasing liquid waste that poured down into the basin of the dock." The ship peed itself. I suppose this is because of prior damage and doesn't happen all the time.
"He began to walk down the slender metal bridge, ignoring the dark gulf of the dock cavity that yawned below." I'm sure one would get used to it, in a world without railings. Which the 40k world seems to be.
"He looked Gaunt in the eyes for a moment, then embraced him. There was great intent in his hug, but very little strength. Gaunt didn’t know how to react. He stood for a moment, awkward, until the general released him." Just hug him back, you dork!
"‘When you use words like “pickle”, Barthol,’ he said, ‘it is always an understatement. A euphemism. And I immediately expect it to be followed by some description of how the Ghosts can dig you out of it with their lives.’" He's not wrong. That's usually the way it's worked.

While you may hardly have noticed your husband's absence just a year ago, his lack of presence is like a void now. You know, logically, that he's likely alright. He's not in some far-flung corner in the galaxy. He's merely on the other side of the planet, on maneuvers with his men.
Still, you can't help but wonder if he's alright. If something were to go wrong, how would you know? Who would tell you?
--
When you hear the click of the door lock a day sooner than you're meant to, you leap up out of your seat, practically charging down the hall. You hardly get a glimpse at Gurney before you're wrapping your arms around his shoulders, drawing him close. You hear the clatter of Gurney's things hitting the floor, and the thud of the door shutting behind him before he takes hold of you.
"Are you alright?" You mumble.
"I am. Are you?"
"'m fine. Just missed you something fierce."
"I missed you, too, sweet girl."
You smooth a hand up his back, resting it on his nape and allowing your eyes to close. You revel in the feeling of his body against yours, the rise and fall of his chest as he draws in a deep breath. You turn your head, peppering kisses along the side of his face, elating in the feeling of his cheek shifting as he smiles. He tips his head toward yours, pecking your lips gently, then leaning in for another kiss. You sigh softly, smoothing your fingers through his closely-cropped hair.
"You ought not hold me too long," He warns against your lips. You draw back just a touch, expression twisting in confusion before he adds, "I smell like a goat."
You giggle, cupping his cheek.
"Not nearly as bad. But I won't begrudge your cleaning up."
You step back, taking hold of his hand, urging him on before he can take his things up.
"I'll take care of them," You add, glancing back toward him. Gurney squeezes your hand, raising it to press a kiss to it.
"You're too good to me."
"Hardly," You mumble, turning away as your face heats at his tender praise. You lead the way into the bathroom and let go, walking to the tub and turning on the taps. You sit on the edge, adjusting the temperature and running your fingers under the stream to ensure it's not too hot. You glance back, gaze sweeping Gurney's body as he undresses. You avert your eyes again as he turns toward you.
"Set?" You ask.
"Yes."
You smile as he leans down, pressing a kiss to your cheek. You reach back patting his cheek gently. His beard is overgrown a touch, but you don't mind it a bit.
"Take your time," You urge as you stand. "I'll start dinner."
Gurney doesn't let you go right away, instead resting his hands on your hips and drawing you close. Your gaze slips closed as his lips brush yours, then press warmly. You groan softly, sliding your hands over his biceps.
"You're certain you can't join me?" He murmurs, toying with the tie on the back of your dress. You blink up at him, at his sweet, desirous eyes, then bite your lip and nod a little.
"I suppose I could be persuaded."

I was told to share more of my works in progress.
So here's my attempts on cool chaos-Horus.
I don't like Chris Wraight's physical descriptions of the Primarchs (this "hunchback of Barbarus"-thing he has going on for Mortarion is rather infuriating), except for Horus intense eyes.
But I LOVE the cool, dangerous, elegant, disturbing personalities he is giving them! He doesn't need the flat, boring, repetitive "depraved"-stick McNeill uses to beat a horse so dead it is already liquefying.

The Warmaster- Part 7
@the-fluffy-underbelly
Nine: Blood Price
"She was scared. That was good. Scared was good. A soldier who claimed he wasn’t scared wasn’t much of soldier." And Mkoll should know, the shit he's been through.
"The flash-boom of the weapon covered the grisly thump of the midshipman’s exploded carcass slamming off the corridor wall." That seems like overkill.
"He thought it was a shame she’d ever got promoted. She’d have excelled in a field speciality." Even in the grim dark of the future, there is always the Peter Principle.
"Eadwine of the Silver Guard looked down briefly at the scorched shot marks on his torso plate. The bulk of him filled the ruptured doorway." Oops, she shot a Space Marine. Good thing he has really nice armor.
"‘And how would you define that exactly?’ asked Rawne.
‘Awry?’ suggested Varl." That's Beltayn's line!
"‘I shouldn’t,’ Rawne agreed quietly. He was staring at Oysten. He was thinking, and that made him look more dangerous than usual." As if that's possible.
"‘If this is our last ditch, we should go down fighting like bastards,’ Brostin went on. ‘Give ’em fething hell as they choke us out, ’stead of skulking around in a fething prison block.’" Of course Brostin wants to fight to the end. And burn to the end, I assume.
"I’m not going to end my days defying an express fething order." You can tell Rawne's changed a lot, because he's saying to not disobey an order.
"‘But we can work out how best to implement that order,’ he said. ‘Could be that the best way to protect our charge is to get out there and kill stuff a lot.’" Oh, that's why. Loopholes.
"‘They are afraid of the great destroyer,’ he said. ‘They are afraid of the Tormaggeddon Monstrum Rex.’" Oh, great, even the enemy is afraid of this ship.
Ten: Visiting Death
"Its battery cowlings retracted like eyelids. In the opened gun-ports, weapons lit and began to shine like lanterns along its edge as power charged the feeding cables and generator ducts of the guns. Red volcanic light throbbed as it illuminated the ship from within, a ruddy glow within the charred black skin and bone of the monster’s hull." Uh. Shit.
"‘All fire control systems are defunct,’ he replied. ‘We cannot arm or aim–’" Double shit.
"Power fluctuation was too great,’ he said. ‘We could not sustain shield integrity. Shields are dead.’" With a shit garnish.
"The strikes hit the aft section, bursting out in huge cones of light and debris." More damage! Just what they need!
"‘Well, clearly, we’re not dead,’ said Criid. ‘Not actually dead.’" That's kind of stating the obvious.
Yay, cryptic statements!
"‘It is my ship now,’ he repeated. ‘In which case… get this damn strategium functioning!’" If it works, go with it! And Gaunt makes it work.
"‘Those three impact sites… they are the remains of the three boarding vessels that had clamped to us. The enemy raiders have been burned off our hull.’" Wait, what? By an enemy ship?
"But now he felt fear, genuine fear. Not a fear of risk or danger, or the desperation of warfare. It was horror. A terror of the unknown. A simple inability to comprehend and fathom the dark workings of the galaxy. He could fight a physical enemy, no matter the odds. A practical problem could be attacked and extinguished. But this was beyond him, and he despised the feeling. There was no sense. The harder he looked for it, the less sense there was." That's probably a smart reaction.
