can’t believe sokka spent 3 seasons telling dad-jokes, likes expensive atlases, viscerally hates getting sidetracked on road trips, thinks he’s the greatest detective, carries a beard with him as a disguise, pretends to not like physical affection but secretly loves it (see group hug in the earth king), is obsessed with meat, is constantly sarcastic and complaining, is overprotective of his sister, LITERALLY HAD A WHOLE ARC ABOUT WANTING TO MAKE HIS DAD PROUD AND ENDED UP LEADING THE INVASION FOR HIM, and y’all still have the audacity to call ZUKO the Dad Friend

Hc that the Gaang plays a game that’s kind of like a lie detector test, where one person has to sit in the middle of the room and each remaining Gaang member gets to ask them a question, then Toph tells everyone if they’re telling the truth. If they’re lying, they get hit in the face with water (Curtesy of Katara or Aang)

Another thing I've been muling over: a complain I've seen about Maiko is that she keeps him from going on the right path—and... I agree.
For Mai, Zuko's well-being is her sole concern and the rest of the world could crash and burn and that's... Okay?
Realistically speaking, your support system should NOT be one person. One thing I love about ATLA is that (despite romance writing not being one of it's strong points) the lack of ships that follow the tropes.
Kataang is not an archetype. Neither is Sukka or Maiko.
Having your support system be just your romantic partner isn't healthy (for them or for you) or realistic. But most romances do that and until I watched ATLA it didn't occurred to me that that's not a good thing.
ATLA and Maiko are very realistic in that Zuko needs both the Gaang and Mai. He needs the Gaang to hold him accountable for every shitty little thing he did—and he needs Mai there to keep from spiraling and self-destruction.
Zuko and his uncle were de facto conquerors, so they had to do much more to redeem themselves than Mai and Ty Lee (mere soldiers, but NOT innocent) had to.
Zuko had to work hard to earn the Gaang's forgiveness (personal opinion: he should've grovelled more and he should've been called out on his racism against Aang) and Uncle Iroh reconquered Ba Sing Se in the name of it's people.
They both did reparations to the very people they hurt. And their crimes were much more direct and vicious compared to Mai and Ty Lee’s.
As someone not as responsible as them, Mai and Ty Lee's redeeming themselves was at the Boiling Rock.
And well, when Zuko is Firelord right after the war—he would be paying for the crimes of his ancestors. He needs the Gaang there to keep from acting like he did with Katara pre-Southern Raiders (everyone else seems to have forgiven me!) and he needs Mai to keep himself from actually spiralling into self-destruction and undeserved guilt (Sozin's and Ozai's faults aren't his even if he's paying for it and someone needs to remind him that)
So, yeah. He needs them both for different things.
As for Mai, her conflict was that she was never allowed to express herself. And loving Zuko made up for that—she finally stands up for something she believes in (not in the cause, but in Zuko) and Zuko didn't even have to do anything beside exist. He didn't “fix her.”
Although, again I do have the the complain that Mai has to do a lot of emotional labour for him and if you really are gonna shit on Maiko: it's Zuko who needs to step up, not Mai—well, Mai tried to “fix him” and she couldn't!
That's so important to me!—I’m tired of girl fixes boy narrative. And she couldn't fix him because only he could fix himself and Mai herself is used to making the best out of a situation and being selfish/passive/choosing the path of least resistance. She tried to do to Zuko what worked for her (or maybe didn't, considering she was coping)—and well—later when Zuko's Firelord it'll be Mai who keeps him from harming himself.
Zuko needs both to be balanced out.
He needs multiple people to act as support system and that's both healthy and realistic. Mai isn't everything and neither should she be.
I know what the comics did; don't bring them up here. It's not about the comics.

Would you have any thoughts about the Gaang in a modern au (either with or without bending), especially jobs? I legit love how there’s never been a consensus of how they’d live, especially job wise, in the fandom — except for Katara, she is absolutely a doctor, surgeon, ER badass. Personally, I love the thought of Zuko as a child protective agent, and Sokka as a high school teacher, not just for the dramatic Zukka potential lol haha either way, I’d love to hear your thoughts!
aaa ok i love and adore to see how their roles get translated in modern au’s in such clever ways, i loveee your ideas for zukka workplace drama that’s so 🥺 ok i’ll list some of my faves but feel free to add
-doctor katara SO TRUE and activist katara also so true either way she’s helping people and giving all she’s got
-aang also activist monk-turned *insert job that has to do with flying?? or meteorology??* AND i love the silly little headcanon he and zuko are lion dance partners dkfjdj
-toph wwe champion. without question
- jet could also work with kids tbh as either a child protective agent too or teaching martial arts classes for kids as some sort of social program he zuko and toph have an underground fight club every tuesday he and iroh have a wholesome breaking bad situationship going on with banger edibles
- zuko the guy with 294737 job options tbh either as jasmine dragon clerk, firefighter, historian / khon expert and standing authority on the ramakien, parkour guy, sword guy, guy who goes to business school just to learn how to efficiently dismantle dad’s financial empire, and i am extremely partial on muai thay champion-instructor zuko who has like a post-injury gym program just for the zukka of it all of him helping sokka with his leg during rehab 😌
- sokka also guy that can do anything tbh wether working as inventor or in tech/mechanic fixing things, working at a science museum (hi robin), marine biologist (hi kath) working as an astronomer or at the planetarium bc he’s always been fascinated by the night sky and the moon, artist, poet, mythbuster, sword guy as well, all of these at once. most importantly he has an insanely popular food blog on the side
- suki kendo captain of an all-girl club
- florist mai. (specifically ikebana artist) which is comic canon and in context made little sense but i love it it’s beautiful bc it brings me to
- tattoo artist ty-lee 💕
- and azula uhhh nepobaby electrician

A rant about Aang and Byrke
WARNING NOT KATAANG FRIENDLY
CONTINUE WITH PRECAUTION
Hello my loves!
Here I'm with a new blog entry.
This time we will talk about Kataang, Aang and Byrke.
Since I'm writing a FanFic where Aang is paired with an OC, I thought I could tell you why I prefer Aang with OCs instead of Katara.
Just to be clear.
I like Aang.
I love Katara and would for this girl sell my liver.
But them together as a pair...please no!
Kataang is one of my NOTPs.
In my Let's Talk about Zutara post I pretty much said why I can't stand this pairing.
One is the age and maturity gap.
What does a 14-year-old want with a 12-year-old? It's just creepy, no matter the gender and it would have been better if they got together at like 22 and 20.
Even if I think Zutara is superior, I could grimly accept Kataang.
Second Aang and Katara are the worst version of their self together.
I haven't read the comics, but what I saw on Tumblr and on Legend of Korra was enough to make me angry.
Katara was reduce to Aang price, girlfriend, housewife and mother of his children.
The warrior girl we all loved, who never turned her back on people who needed her, became in the name of love (and Byrke) a shadow of herself.
Our real Katara would smack this wishy-washy version of herself to kingdom come!
Then we have Aang. The boy clearly turns into a Nice GuyTM when it's about Katara.
He kissed her TWICE, TWICE, without her consent and never said sorry for this.
He thinks he deserves her love because he is the Avatar (the hero) and that's how it be.
Till Season 2 Aang wasn't that worse about Katara, a lot of plotpoints pointed out that Aang obsession, I'm not calling it love, on Katara was not good.
He replaced the love for his people with Katara.
Erm, that's not healthy at all.
What Aang expierendec was traumatic, he is the sole suriver of a genocide, but he can't shove all his love for his people to Katara.
How can only one person hold this standards?
It's impossible.
Katara is a bandaid on a ripped arm.
A bandaid isn't going to fix Aang trauma.
He needed to really face it and accept it and let Katara go.
Guru Pathik told him he to let Katara go, but I don't think it was meant to say, don't love that girl anymore.
No, it was more like: you clearly are obsessed with her and think if she loves you all your hurt will go away, but this isn't the case!
Aang could still love Katara, he just needed to stop to put her on a pestal!
Then we know what happens, he let's her go, seems to get the Avatar State, but turn it down because Katara is in danger and he must save her.
Alright, we all would run to our loved one if they are in danger, but Aang, you are the Avatar.
The Avatar is the peacekeeper of this world.
Sadly he can't put his own desires forward, he has do to what was for the world right!
In the Crystal Catabombs he realizes this.
So he let's go of Katara to get the Avatar State and then gets shot down by Azula.
Then when the first episode of season 3 rolls around, you get the feeling that Aang learnend his lesson.
Because he was selfish, he lost his greatest eapan.
He needed to be better.
Only...after the first episode season 3 was really...bad.
I can't say it better.
If you compare it to the other two seasons...season 3 has mayor problems.
A lot of plotpoints get forgotten, Aang didn't learn from his mistakes, he acts entitled for Katara love and he gets his Avatar State back thanks to Deus-Ex-Machine Rock and even finds a way to handle Ozai thanks to Deus-Ex-Machine Lion Turtle.
How, HOW, did the creators look at this and want a golly what an awesome final?
It was not!
It was rushend and not earnend!
Because Aang is a selfinsert from Bryek.
They statet once in an interview that Kataang was reflection how they had a crush on their babysitter, who of course didn't wanted them and would go out with the "bad boy".
The bad boy here in question is Zuko, which is hilarious since Zuko is the most awkward dork.
So they wanted to create a story were the young hero gets the hot older girl.
No normal 14-year-old girl would date a 12-year-old and if she did call the police on her ass!
Avatar was only amazing because of writers like Aaron Ehasz, who turned Toph, who was supposed to be a boy and a love rival for Aang, into this badass girl who didn't let her disabilty stop her to become the greatest earthbender and inventer of metalbening in the world.
They truned Iroh into thee loveable and wise uncle and not like Byrke wanted into a spy for Ozai.
Also Azula was supposed to be a boy too, but she became the female villain we all loved and wish we would see in other media's too!
A lot of writer wanted also Zutara to happen and not Kataang.
If I remember right season 3 was so rushed and lacking because the movie-who-shall-not-be-named was in production and Bryke wanted the series to end before it.
A lot of concept were thrown out the window for it.
The writers wanted to make even a season 4, where Aang would even find other airbenders, but noooooooooooooooo we can't give Aang the healing he deserves, we must live out a fantasy trough this boy.
Looking at you Bryke.
Anyways we got, what we got and I'm so not happy about it.
Zutara should be canon and Aang should have found a girl who loved really, who was his equal and who didn't needed to be a broodmare for the air nomads, becasue there where still air nomads around.
Here we get back to my preference to ship Aang with OCs. Since I'm a big fan of the theoretical season four we would have gotten, it's only naturel to imagine own characters, since no canon characters exist for it.
I would have loved to see Aang with a descendant of Air Nomads. She learning from him, he learning from her, cute!
But let's be real if Aang is writing good he could work with a lot of characters.
Even canon ones like On Ji. I found her really cute with him.
The only thing I want for Aang partner is that the girl doesn't get reduced to a broodmare.
So the airbenders have always to come back/stop from hiding.
IT'S NOT THE COMPLICATED!
BUT WE CAN'T HAVE NICE THINGS!
WE LIVE IN THE DARK TIMELINE!
AVATAR COULD HAVE BEEN THE MOST REVOLUTIONARY CARTOON EVER, BUT NOOOOOO TWO MEN HAD TO MAKE THEIR WEIRD FANTASY REALITY AND DIDN'T LISTEN TO THEIR TEAM OF WRITER WHO WERE LIKE, FAM THAT'S NARRAVTIVLY SPEACKING HUGE STEPS BACKWARDS!!!!!!
AAAAAAAAAAAARRRRGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!
Yeah, I think you all guessed how much I hate Bryke.
Fricking pricks!
Also, people who make fun of their own fans because they ship a pairing themselves not like are the worst!
That shows have much respect they have for their fans.
Zero.
They just wanted to live out their fantasy and be done.
Again, fricking pricks!
So for now, that's from me, I needed to get it out of my chest.
Till next time my loves!

no matter whether ppl are trying to make zk's canon relationship out to be sibling coded or associative friends or whatever else ppl make up i feel it all comes from this place of people that don't ship it being unable to handle zuko and katara's canonically deep and intimate friendship at the end of show without (whether subconsciously or not) perceiving it as some kind of threat to whatever katara or zuko ship they DO ship (usually either k/a or z/s or m/z)
they don't know how to acknowledge/write zk (and i don't think them being a m/f ship is divorced from this) having their canonically close friendship alongside whatever they ship because that closeness, no matter how platonic, can't supersede the romance of their own ship. so they just lazily write it off as "siblings" or convince themselves they weren't ever that close in the first place or that katara still secretly hates zuko or something in order to get out of the bind of allowing them to be close friends even if you ship them with other people 🤷‍♀️

One of things I like about Zuko and Iroh’s relationship is that while no doubt Iroh is the voice of reason to his traumatized, angry and stubborn nephew, when left unsupervised he can be as much of a disaster as Zuko. And sure, Iroh is a wise man, great tactician and a renowned fighter/soldier but the moment Zuko let uncle out of sight, the man ended:
captured by Earth soldiers because he decided to relax in hot bath and fall asleep fully aware they are on enemy land and Earth Kingdom hates Fire Nation (saved by Zuko)
poisoned himself with the flower he wasn’t sure was edible but still decided to make a tea out of it and then was ready to test his luck with another plant he wasn’t again sure about, to save himself from the first problem (Zuko threw it away before something worse could happen)
betrayed their Fire Nation ethnicity when they pretended to be refugees inside Ba Sing Se city because of course Iroh needed to warm up his cold tea (Zuko immediately called out him on this dangerous stupidity; Jet unfortunately noticed the steam from now hot tea what lead to his and Zuko fight later)
with honorable mention
of Zuko being the voice of reason telling Iroh he can’t take all the pretty shells and other unnecessary stuff because they are carrying their own baggages on their backs now
and Iroh spending who knows how much money on things that he found on sales even though he was supposed to buy himself only White Lotus pawn (and I’m still not sure if the money was part of Zuko’s ship budget or just Iroh’s own saving).
The thing I love about their dynamic is that yes, uncle Iroh is the voice of reason in the emotional struggles of Zuko (and as much a source of his frustration with all the proverbs), but Zuko too is the voice of reason when it comes down to Iroh indulging himself with things he finds pretty or comforting while totally ignoring the obvious danger or impracticality that would slow them down/burden in their journal. And I really really appreciate that Zuko is not less important to Iroh’s survival & safety than Iroh is to his and that their relationship is not one sided “wise mentor and hot-headed, stubborn student” because they both may drive each other crazy at times, and have different sense of comfort and safety but they will make sure the other is safe as sound as much as possible. And Zuko is not the only one that gets into trouble due to not thinking well about his actions.

one day we’ll talk about how extremely xenophobic the atla fandom is in how they justify the original cast’s horrible writing in the (more western 😃) sequel series by demeaning and degrading the cultures that they’re based on
starting with: aang being a bad dad makes sense because he grew up with monks and didn’t have a biological father
how utterly disgusting and weird. but honestly i just feel bad that so many of you have been brainwashed so effectively
meanwhile zuko is, according to the fandom, a good father and that makes sense despite his biological father being abusive for his entire childhood
but watch they will bring up iroh as if aang didn’t have gyatso
watch how they will complain about toph being a cop despite her last canon appearance being a 12 year old just like aang
watch how they will criticize katara and sokka’s (lack of) character development while claim that aang was written perfectly.

AU where Zuko's in his 20s and his ministers are now all trying to persuade him to get get married and have an heir cos 'really Fire Lord Zuko, you must secure the line to the throne' and 'the fire nation has already had a succession crisis, there really isn't a need to cause another one'
but the thing is, there was a reason why he and Mai broke up years ago; she had realised she much preferred girls whilst he realised he really didn't. (They had however remained strong friends and he couldn't wait for the next time Mai and Ty Lee would visit so they could catch up)
so there he was stuck on what exactly he should do, especially on how to avoid trying to be pressured to agree to a marriage with one of the daughters of the noblemen of court. And so, late one night, deep into papers on the agricultural imports of the southern isles, he lets out a sleep deprived prayer to the spirits to at least let that problem resolve itself, cos 'Spirits damn it, he really doesn't need his ministers trying to discuss his love life and how they could benefit from it'
so anyway he releases that half-crazed prayer and thinks nothing of it, burying himself deeper into his work.
but the spirits have always been fickle things, and something in the spirit world shifts
The next morning, Zuko's in the middle of going through what meetings he has scheduled today when he is interrupted by a frantic messenger asking for him to come to the temples by the request of the high sage. Obviously, that means something serious must have happened with the spirits if the high sage is calling for him without asking for an official meeting, right?
So he rushes into the temple, and once inside he witnesses several very stressed sages running around whilst the high sage stares him down while holding what looked like a very sooty bundle of cloth.
As he comes closer it suddenly becomes a lot more apparent that the cloth bundle is in fact a child
The child seems to squirm inside its tight wrappings before opening its golden eyes and staring at the new presence in front of it. And as Zuko gazes down at the curious eyes of the baby all he can think is the overwhelming feeling of rightness before he sweeps the little girl into his arms.
It is not until later that hes told of how the child appeared in the temple and how she had caused such disarray among the order. That as Agni's first light had kissed the land the fires of the temple had surged up, almost as if attempting to join the spirit in its journey across the sky, before dropping low and revealing the giggling form of a babe born from flame and ash.
But that is not until later, and right now all Zuko can concentrate on is his beautiful new daughter and how he promises to be a better father than Ozai ever was to him

Would love to read an a/b/o atla fanfic where the pack isn't complete until zuko joins them, as he ends up being the pack omega that's necessary for the group to function peacefully and effectively

Ok so we’re all in agreement that post canon when everything’s chill Jeong Jeong and Piandao are living their best cottagecore-but-mansion lives, and we all love the ‘Aang tells JJ about the Sun Warriors and Piandao convinces him to go see it for himself (cuz he def doesn’t believe it)’ idea BUT might I now suggest:
what if he spends longer there than Aang/Zuko/Iroh did to learn more and finds out that they have healers too. Fire Healing is a technique that exists similar to the more known Water Healing, but it’s existence got buried as one of the many secrets of Firebending forgotten with the Warriors themselves. What I’m saying is Jeong Jeong returns and spends years practicing (still terrified of burning someone who’s already hurt) and exchanging letters with both the healers he met and Yugoda until he’s mastered it, eventually becoming the Fire Nation’s first known Bending-Healer. And then perhaps at Iroh or Zuko’s suggestion he teaches it to (a stable to the point where she wants to better herself but can’t figure out how) Azula. Healing with fire is more difficult then with water and as a new art is still a rare skill by Korra’s time, but Jeong Jeong and Azula learning it and teaching it to others is how we eventually get this: (perhaps zuko has it become an essential technique for Fire Sages to learn?)
Tumblr media
(Disclaimer I haven’t seen tlok yet so idk what else happens in this scene other then a woman using fire to figure out what’s wrong with korra)
So yes this whole post is just about the two Firebenders we never got healing arcs for becoming their nation’s first healers and both learning the essential truth that fire is more than death and destruction or rage and suffering <3

Could we get a continuation of the time travel/back in time au? I love the maiko setup!! (Ik i just sent in a different 5hc ask as well, but I sent some very scary emails today, so I’m rewarding myself :D)
Universe tag: #The whole Gaang wakes up a hundred years in the past verse
1. Mai's "siblings" don't tell her they even sent an offer of her hand off until the prospective groom has asked to meet her. So when her supposed sister bursts into her room one morning and tells her to start packing her meager possessions, because they found her a husband, Mai is horrified, she has no idea who they might have sold her to, and she is doing everything she can to come up with contingency plans to get out of this. Until of course her "sister" tells her that she's going to court. Mai can work with that.
2. Of course her plan is to go to court, and use the opportunity to assassinate Ozia, in a suicidal blaze of glory, which is both suitably dramatic, and would solve the problem of her having to actually deal with her intended husband. She wouldn't be around to have to worry about such things. So she and Ty Lee pack up and head to the capital, sharing a cramped one room cabin on a merchant ship, and Mai grits her teeth and doesn't scream as Ty Lee speculates about this new, and newly enobled, court soothsayer Mai is meeting to see if he will marry her. Ty Lee doesn't remember him from the history books. Mai doesn't care, okay? He is irrelevant to her plans.
3. And then they reach the capitol, and who is there at the dock, and trying not to look like an anxious little monkey-poodle puppy hoping his person is coming home soon? It's Zuko. Of course it's Zuko. He looks ridiculous, in court fashions that are a hundred years out of date, or in fact perfectly suited to the time period in which they find themselves, and when he sees Mai he lights up with relief and joy, and Mai feels a little bit like a character in a play as Ty Lee introduces her for appearences sake.
4. He escorts them to his new townhome, and breakfast is served, and then just like they always used to, Zuko contrives to send the servants away, and as soon as they're gone, with only Ty Lee around to witness, Mai sinks into Zuko's arms. It isn't about passion, or excitement, or even romance, but simply about exhaustion, and relief, and the complete trust that she can let down her guard, and rest here, with Zuko and Ty Lee. And Zuko just holds her for a few minutes, until she remembers that he would probably like to be held too, and she wraps her arms around him.
5. Before, Mai and Zuko were nowhere near talking about marriage. Sure, it was always somewhere in the background that Zuko was going to have to marry someone, because he was Firelord and he was going to have to make heirs, but they had only really just gotten back together. And now, they're stuck in this archaic dynastic betrothal, and sure, Zuko could refuse to marry her and send her home in disgrace, but really, they're going to get married to at least avoid having to get married to anybody else, and they both know it. They might as well get used to it.
6. Ty Lee would like out of the room so that she could stop being the third wheel. Anytime now.
