“To be looked at that way, from someone’s heart, can change you molecularly if you are not careful.” ~ Ann Lamont, Dusk Night Dawn I called this “the soul stare”. A time of powerful silence with 33 gorgeous souls, we greeted each other with our eyes, fingertips, and the breath of life. It was like an oasis. Life can get really busy and involved. Schedules can demand that we keep moving without really Seeing. Being. Or Breathing. Ourselves or even with those we share this ground with. Layer on the amount of perceptions, judgements, needs and boundaries and there really is no way we are going to radically move beyond our self-protection and isolation. Sometimes it’s fear. Sometimes it’s just plain negligence or in-opportunity. We just don’t have it for whatever reason. Having been touched and held by the gaze of so many hearts, I can say with authority, we need it. This oasis of being seen. It is grounding. It is partaking. It is freeing. There is healing in those eyes. And gravity in the life of one standing in front of you helping you see. This practice reminds me of Jesus. And how people felt His Healing… Soul Stare. And how we can be like Him, and heal ourselves and others by looking with the eyes of the heart. Today, has your heart been seen? Have you practiced seeing the heart of another or honoring the breath of life in them? If you have, you are rich indeed. 💖 Angela Rankin 📸 @michelle.thielen captured Angela Rankin and Michelle Lumpkins #soulstare #immersion2021 #yogafaithmasters2021 #mastertrainer #theartofseeing #eyesoftheheart #yogafaith #HearingTheMastersVoice #masters #prana #partnerpranayama #Breath #HolySpirit #pranayama (at YOGA FAITH) https://www.instagram.com/p/CR0NDybskTZ/?utm_medium=tumblr

#Beauty has many forms. The true one doesn’t crave for #attention. The more I practice my photography skill, the more I become an #observer, I use fewer to no filters. COLORKinetics is a course I am taking to deepen my knowledge about color. Playing with colors to get to browns. You only need 3! It is hard and fun at the same time. I can spend hours mixing until I get the right hue. Great way to end the long weekend. #seasonalcoloranalysis #theartofseeing #seeingcolors #colorinsight2 #colorinsight https://www.instagram.com/p/CE3BFKwMWoR/?igshid=nc3e3i5vd2tw

WORK IN PROGRESS  Ariel Kirk-Gushowaty’s  Learning to Live Now: Don’t Look, Just See
Screening & Snacks  Saturday November 23rd 5-7pm Artist Talk & Discussion  Saturday November 30th 2-4pm  Burrard View Fieldhouse, 545 N Slocan Street
For this inaugural month of our WORK IN PROGRESS series, Iris Film Collective’s Ariel Kirk-Gushowaty will share a rough cut of her experimental documentary and offer guests a chance to try the “Kasina Mind Machine” (A Meditation Machine) as well as eye exercises from Aldous Huxley’s “The Art of Seeing”.
Learning to Live Now explores the idea of vision as a bridge between the mind and body. As such, our eyes are often deeply affected by an ego-driven way of being in the world. However, our eyes are also physical. If we can bring a softness into our way of seeing; if we can become more embodied in our way of seeing, can we perhaps, in the course of everyday life, exert a powerful influence on our state of mind? Taking this as a jumping off point, Ariel tumbles into the pseudo-science of eye exercises, the mysteries of vision, the question of screens, and the advantages of being silly.
Both events are free of charge!
This is the first in the Iris Film Collective’s WORK IN PROGRESS series, a month-long residency at the Burrard View Fieldhouse featuring a different Iris Film Collective member each month who will be using the space to work on their individual projects. The public is invited to pop by while they are working; as well, two evenings in the month will be devoted to public events. This is a great opportunity to meet the artists and see what they are up to, as well as to visit the Fieldhouse and check out our setup!
Ariel Kirk-Gushowaty is an experimental filmmaker and photo-based artist. Her practice explores consciousness, relationships, and technology. As a parent of two young daughters she also has a special interest in how these topics are affecting the next generation. Ariel has a BA in Philosophy and Cinema Studies from the University of Toronto, and a Photography Certificate from Langara College. Her work has been shown in Canada and internationally.

“Abstraction allows man to see with his mind what he cannot see physically with his eyes....Abstract art enables the artist to perceive beyond the tangible, to extract the infinite out of the finite. "What we do see depends mainly on what we look for. ... In the same field the farmer will notice the crop, the geologists the fossils, botanists the flowers, artists the colouring, sportmen the cover for the game. Though we may all look at the same things, it does not all follow that we should see them."
