There's still a haunt on the hill...

In my previous post, I dug through the ghostly chain of adaptations of Shirley Jackson's "The Haunting of Hill House" starting by its various movie incarnations. But I am not done...

Because in 2018, Mike Flanagan released on Netflix his massively successful television series, "The Haunting of Hill House".

Flanagan's television series was strongly influenced by "The Shining", another major haunting-story of the 20th century, first marking American literature under the pen of Stephen King...

... Then marking American cinema by the movie adaptation of Stanley Kubrick.

Mike Flanagan never hid his passion and love for "The Shining", both the Kubrick and King versions, and it is for this reason he was the man behind the 2019 movie "Doctor Sleep"....

... an adaptation of Stephen King's sequel-novel to The Shining.

And fascinatingly, a lot of details and ideas of Flanagan's "The Haunting of Hill House" (or its sister-series, "The Haunting of Bly Manor") were reused for his Doctor Sleep movie...

But, speaking of Stephen King, did you know he made his own "The Haunting of Hill House"? Well, almost... He and Steven Spielberg worked on a project in the 1990s: a remake of The Haunting/a new movie adaptation of "The Haunting of Hill House". Unfortunately this movie never came to the light of day, as the two men split apart due to creative differences...

However this did not stop Stephen King from reusing the unused/unfinished script/concept for his "Haunting of Hill House" adaptation, throwing in a lot of elements from his own "The Shining", with several nods to the real-life Winchester Mansion, and tadaa! The result was 2002's mini-series "Rose-Red".

Stephen King has very often praised Jackson's novel. In fact, in his eyes it is one of the two greatest ghost stories of American literature... Alongside Henry James' The Turn of the Screw.

Do you recall Henry James? Sure you do! From the previous post... He wrote the "Ghostly Rental" story, that itself got adapted in 1999 into a horror movie called "The Haunting of Hell House" - confusing Jackson's "Hill House" with Matheson's "Hell House".

Do the links stop here? NOT AT ALL! Flanagan's "The Haunting of Hill House" was supposed to be the first season of an anthology series about ghost stories. This project got cancelled, but not before a sister-series to "The Haunting of Hill House" was made... a second season called "The Haunting of Bly Manor", which is a loose adaptation of "The Turn of the Screw".

AND THERE'S MORE! Because you see, before being re-adapted by Mike Flanagan, "The Turn of the Screw"'s most famous adaptation was a 1961 movie called "The Innocents". A movie which also became a classic of black-and-white haunted house horror movies, just like "The Haunting" that was released two years afterward... Film critics, cinema theoricians and movie enjoyers all agree that the two movies have to be compared, with something of a sibling relationship to each other.

"The Turn of the Screw" - and more specifically the 1961's "The Innocents" movie - also had a huge influence on one of the greatest Spanish moviemakers of the 21st century: Guillermo del Toro. In fact, it was to pay homage to both the classic of Gothic that was "The Innocents", and the behemoth of the traditional horror that was Kubrick's The Shining, that he decided to create his own Gothic horror movie... The wonderfully horrifying "Crimson Peak", released in 2015.

And not only does Crimson Peak unites The Turn of the Screw with The Shining (Guillermo also invoked the influence of other massive horror movies, such as The Omen or The Exorcist) - but this movie also is the final union, the ultimate blooming of Jackson and James' works. Because del Toro's original intention for this movie was to pay homage to the "two grand dames" of the haunted house movies... 1961's The Innocents, and 1963's The Haunting. The two ghostly tragedies finally united in one Gothic movie...

Well... To be fair, the uniting of "The Haunting of Hill House" and of "The Turn of the Screw" had already happened long before del Toro's Crimson Peak, but with a much less famous and successful movie: 1971's Let's Scare Jessica to Death... A cult piece (despite its lukewarm reception), it was created with only one goal in mind: recreating a psychological horror story with ambiguous implications, in the style of James' The Turn of the Screw, and Robert Wise's The Haunting.

Markers of Idiocy

Sarah's cartoon kick took me back to Animaniacs, and to a character whom I thought was always unjustly maligned, and for the wrong reasons - Ralph.

See, there's this assumption in most cultures, these days, that anyone who opens a statement with a hemming or a hawing sound or who just - needs a while to assemble a thought verbally is some sort of blithering idiot. It's usually paired with a poor lexicon, a generally ignorant mindset or a gaggle of generally slovenly or milquetoast "moronic" traits.

The thing is, for the longest time, that used to be me. It used to be a ton of people I worked with during those early years that saw my learning disability impact my capacity to put words in my own mouth. I was devouring books by age three, sure - but for the first ten years of my life, speaking was this laborious concept that required my putting mental blocks together ahead of time, especially since I was known to be "good" with French's staggeringly complex grammatical system. So, I was the type who'd shut up until he knew exactly what he wanted to say, and how to say it - and who'd still open with "Uh..." because pushing that synthesis out verbally was another challenge all its own.

Do you know how many times I was told something along the lines of "We'll circle back to you when you'll have put your ducks in a row"?

Here's the thing: I completed a Master's degree while hemming and hawing on occasion, and nothing is as insane to navigate as some blowhard literary theorician's need to expand some tiny, teeny concept into twenty-six fucking pages.

So, I keep thinking - what if the guy who's voiced by Frank Welker, an actor who's made a cottage industry out of sounding like your average idiot on purpose - were actually the smartest guy in the room?

Look, I've seen the cartoons. I know Ralph isn't prone to flashes of brilliance unless it's funny or plot-mandated, but his archetype goes deeper than you'd think. Plus, if you knew how slovenly big-brain Postgrad types could really get, we'd probably rethink the whole praxis of the bottom-tier studio security guard who's too poor and too stupid to stay in shape or eat properly.

Recently French oil workers were striking, it was getting hard to get gas in many places, and the media and anti-strike people were all whining about how it was unfaaaaair that a minority of the population was paralyzing the country.

I’m surprinsingly writing a bit nearly every day lately and this fic is slowly coming together. I’ve completely changed the whole middle part since I’ve had a few new obsessions and ideas (as some of you already know), and honestly it’s for the best because I had troubles making it interesting before. I always progress very slowly when I write the first draft and still play with the chronology and events. It’s like everything feels easier when I finally have every event in mind, and in order. Even if it’s half-written. I just enjoy the editing so much more. The first draft is always a struggle.

The day when France opened overtly its arms to racism and fascism

I wanted to make a post to mark this day because i think we are living a shift: History and Future have been created through the last 48h events and i think we are reaching a point where we can’t go back to think again that we can all live together peacefully despite ours difference. This myth is falling apart. 

This country has been on the path to return to its worst fascist days (the first time was during the second world war when the official goverment of Vichy was collaborating with the nazis regime) since more than 30 years now and the first events that lead to the exclusion from public schools of veiled young muslims girls. 

Two laws have been adopted since then: one prohibiting the veil in public schools, and the other forbiding it in public space when it covers all the face.   On october 29th, a majority of 160 senators have start to vote a 3rd proposition of law to forbide muslims mothers who wear the veil to be a part of their children’s school trips, in the name of protecting children against proselytism. 

This vote happened the day after a man who was an ex candidate for the main extreme right-wing party, attacked a mosquee in a rural town, using an explosive device and injuring seriously two old believers.

Today, something even more telling happened: the President of French Republic decided to give an interview to the main racist media in the country: a magazine that has been the home to the most violent and agressive theoricians of the racist movements. Men and women convinced that muslims shouldn’t live in this country because not only Islam is not compatible with democracy, but the muslims (like all migrants) themselves are working as a 5th column to replace native french people. This theory called “Grand remplacement” has largely inspired the terrorist of Christchurch. 

I don’t think that a man who has been elected on the promise that he was the last thing standing between the fascists and their accession to power could have ignored the effect of giving an interview to a media that has been supporting this theory out loud for years, a media that was also condemned in 2015 for hate speech. 

This interview was also given after 15 days of a major controversy about a theorician of the extreme right-wing who despite his very recent judiciary condemnation for hate speech was offered to lead  a talk show on a news network. His more recent words were that he supported entirely the mass murders of muslims and jews during the colonization of Algeria.

Human right activists and ONG were in the middle of a major campaign to take legal actions against him (again), and working hard at convincing the brands sponsoring the news network involved to stop advertising their products on the channels. Their efforts were starting to pay. Few brands have cancelled the commercial spots boughts during the talk show and made a public announcement about it. Important personalities: politics and intellectuals had stated their engagment to not answer the futur invitations from this news network as long as the racist theorician would work for them. 

That’s when the President of the country decided it was ok to debate with them, that racism is only an opinion and the previous judiciary convictions which made haters actual criminals, weren’t a sign that they are dangerous enough to exclude them from the public space, contrary to the veiled woman and their non christian religious beliefs.  

It’s nothing new: France has a chaotic history, built on alternation between authoritarian regimes and phases of democracy. The fascist government of Vichy handed over jews and communists to nazis before the nazis even asked for their transfer. But how to ignore that the use of apartheid, torture and mass murders of native civilians during the days of the french empire happened while France was officially a democracy? 

That’s maybe why its hard to tell how much darker the situation can become. But based on what i see today, we (muslims and human rights fighters) better prepare ourselves for the worst. Just in case.
