J'ai senti le silence. Son silence me transperça. Ada n'a pas prononcé un mot depuis qu'elle est petite, et son piano lui donne une voix et un mode d'expression. L'instrument fait partie de son corps et de son âme, et sa vie n'a plus de sens si elle ne l'a pas à sa portée.

Ce film parle de la passion d'une femme, de sa définition à travers autre chose qu'un homme, à savoir son piano, et de la façon dont être attaché à un homme - être contrôlé par un - la diminue. Ada est chaque personnage féminin silencieux qui n'est censé être la possession d'un homme que dans chaque film, émission de télévision, livre et pièce de théâtre jamais écrits. Elle remet donc cela en question en ayant une identité en tant que pianiste et un conflit survient lorsque cette identité est menacée. Le silence d'Ada transforme le personnage en un être énigmatique, semblable à Liv Ullmann dans « Persona » (1966), un film réalisé par Ingmar Bergman, Holly Hunter agit avec des regards, des sourires et, surtout, des gestes. Dans ce dernier point, dans certaines scènes, le film prend un air performatif où le jeu d'acteur se confond vraiment avec des danses, surtout quand Alisdair et Ada commencent à jouer le rôle de chasseur et de chasseur.

Imaginez gagner un Oscar à 11 ans et imaginez gagner un Oscar sans avoir à dire un mot : Anna Paquin et Holly Hunter, respectivement. Et, en plus de tout le mérite que les performances de ce film ont, il y a aussi une bande-son enchanteresse et de belles images qui disent tout ce que le protagoniste ne peut pas dire. La photographie nous berce et nous courtise à travers une coloration froide et boueuse, étant une représentation fidèle des vies qui habitent cet environnement. Les références artistiques de ce film et les représentations réalistes de la solitude sont indéniables. On voit une caméra qui marche et nous montre des paysages comme des peintures hollandaises, les deux tiers du ciel et un piano. On retrouve de vrais personnages qui semblent sortir des peintures d'Edward Hopper. L'environnement dans lequel se déroule le film ressemble à l'atmosphère que James Abbott utilisait dans ses œuvres. Une tuile portugaise. L'un des derniers plans, à l'endroit où Ada est recouverte d'un drap et George arrive et l'embrasse dessus, on voit "Les Amoureux" de René Magritte.

Je pense que The Piano est un film qui utilise très bien la violence pour avoir de l'impact et de l'intensité, cette violence n'est pas forcément graphique, on ne voit pas Alisdair couper le doigt d'Ada, mais le visage d'Ada sous la pluie au premier plan montre toute cette agression ciblée à la figure féminine. Un autre point de violence très bien abordé est le jeu du piano, tantôt plus agressif, tantôt plus calme, faisant office de discours du personnage d'Ada.La relation entre elle et les deux figures masculines peut être envisagée du point de vue de la sexualité, à ce point, nous aurons la violation du corps féminin - Alisdair - et la culture de l'intérêt amoureux - George.

C'est un film violent et sale, mais il le faut, il n'y a aucun moyen d'exclure la violence en vogue ici, et Jane Campion le fait avec primauté. Acclamée dans le monde entier pour ce travail, la réalisatrice néo-zélandaise est entrée dans l'histoire du cinéma comme la deuxième femme à être nominée pour la catégorie "Meilleure réalisation" aux Oscars et la première, et jusqu'à présent la seule, cinéaste à recevoir le prix "Palma". d'Or' au Festival de Cannes. Impossible à mentionner : la scène où Ada joue du piano sur la plage a la même puissance poétique que cette scène de 'Portrait de la jeune fille en feu' (2019), réalisé par Céline Sciamma, quand la robe d'Héloïse prend feu et restera toujours enregistré dans votre cerveau. Un film qui montre jusqu'où va quelqu'un pour ses passions, pour son identité, et comment le partage peut mener à quelque chose de plus profond avec les autres.
