Ringing a Bell: Condition Runners-up ~
Our runners-up this week are @ghoulcalculator64, @helloijustreadyourpost and @starch255!

@ghoulcalculator64 — Shredding Howl
This is the cool kind of card that I think would’ve improved limited significantly. Or at least, it would’ve been a fun pick. Even if it wasn’t night, having a Blaze effect is still really darn good. And then the ability to ambush? Great stuff. Making it night ain’t easy, but in a long game of any kind, this is stellar. You demonstrate a good understanding of what Werewolves might’ve been lacking as well as an understanding of how to make these great limited effects.
What could’ve been improved? I think the aesthetics are a little lacking, but this is just a ‘finishing touches’ issue. I can clearly see what this card’s art might’ve been trying to evoke. The name doesn’t help me out that much, though, and while this is kind of a hard card to flavor, you had room for a couple lines that might’ve been helpful in adjusting that name somewhat. Still, these are just the last parts, and the overall design is great. Good idea to make it an instant especially.

@helloijustreadyourpost — Touch of Erebos
The weaknesses of this card are most definitely offset by its strengths. Art direction, stellar. Feeling of Theros-ness, spot-on. Mechanically, it’s got a solid base to work with. So let’s talk about my minor issues first, because I understand everything about where you came from with them.
The non-God was a flavor choice, yes? As much as that makes sense, I think the fact that -X/-X abilities can kill Gods is an important part of limited and shouldn’t be glossed over as something to utilize. Secondly, Tragic Fall might not have specifically been on Innistrad, but 13 really is tied more to that plane and that effect is pretty confusing. -8/-8 could’ve worked, IMO, as that’s the biggest natural Theros number I can think of (re:Krakens). Maybe -9/-9 actually. Anyway. There’s the issue with my issues (oh snap, turnaround!) in that despite this commentary mostly being criticism, this card FEELS fantastic. You captured flavor and limited power and strength and good stuff all together. I can see that AD being promo art! Take that as you’d like.

So... My one mechanical tweak is that I’d say that he should only help the player with the lowest life total. Aside from that, well? I hate to tell you this, but I diagnose you with Good Card despite my grimdark sensibility. Am I cured? Hell no, give me dismemberment. But it’s so important to have levity, AND agony, together in perfect harmony. This card can be a beater AND it can be a fun little group-huggy card. It can be a body AND it can be a gimmick.
Most importantly, it’s fun. It’s a card that’s playable that’s made to be fun. The silly things you can do with it matter to some people and hey as it turns out there’s a lot to be said for a card that’s a 10th pick if it matters to that person. I even know someone at my LGS who’s a huge elephant buff and I know they’d fall in love with this card. So that’s that, yeh? Goodness comes in so many forms. This elephant man can treat me any day. Run me over. Steth my scope. On a serious final note, I do think it’s important to showcase joyful non-competitive cards that could be printed. That’s part of Magic that needs to exist.

See y’all on the commentary flip-side.

Could I get a high five to whoever the fine folks were shepherding Sethron to his creation? I have loved minotaurs forever, ever since Theros gave them a more focused tribal identity. It's my favorite standard deck, discovering Neheb got me back into magic, and Sethron is my absolute favorite commander deck. His creation (and the year of the Ox promo) made me feel incredibly seen and giddy all year.
I will pass along the high five once I figure out who should get it.

The best thing that Theros Beyond Death is bringing is a way to have my pet deck’s primary win condition be more shiney than before. I was honestly going to be really mad if they reprinted Gary and did not make him the black special frame card in the promo pack.

Theros Beyond Death Trailer
youtube
We were treated to so many goodies this week. The Theros: Beyond Death cinematic trailer is here and honey, I have thoughts.
OKAY, let’s start with the good. The great, even.
The Good
I love me some Elspeth, and you know I love me some Ashiok. So, stoked to see those two returning.
The music, by Game of Thrones’ Ramin Djawadi, is phenomenal. And the animation is solid, just like all the recent promos they’ve done.
Finally, I really enjoyed the horror movie shock moment of child Elspeth’s face. It was surprising and was a great transition into Ashiok.
The Eh
As far as the basic premise goes, I give this promo a C. I mean, it’s not awful, but it’s pretty pedestrian compared with how deeply inspired the War of the Spark and Throne of Eldraine trailers were. But it’s as if Wizards said, “Y’know that thing we did that made our last two trailers go viral and have everyone talk about them? What if we just don’t do that again?”
The actual trailer content itself feels a little uninspired, at least to me. It might have worked better if it had been kept under wraps that Elspeth was coming back, so this could be some sort of big reveal for her return. But we’ve known about Elspeth coming back for a while now, and not just due to leaks. The packaging itself has been out for at least a month. At this point, this worked better as an Ashiok reveal than anything else.
But at the end of the day, other than the superior graphics & music, this trailer feels more like some of the old-school Magic trailers. Maybe it’s a good thing, as it will keep things a little varied. I dunno.
What Does it Tell Us?
Honestly, not too much. The main story things to glean out of this trailer are 1) that Elspeth escapes the Underworld (which has been obvious for months), and 2) that Ashiok will likely be the primary antagonist.
That second point is the most exciting, because so far Ashiok has been more of a side character than anything else, except for the confrontation with Dack Fayden in the comic series. Giving Ashiok the spotlight as a proper antagonist is really exciting and opens up the door for a lot of cool details and story gems to come out of this set. So I’m stoked for that.
Last thing, something my boyfriend pointed out, is that the very ending feels very much like Elspeth “re-sparking”. Not sure what that means, but it could mean that when she died in the original Theros story, she lost her spark, and therefore her means of escaping the underworld is to find it and reignite. Which is a pretty cool idea. We’ll see what happens.

There has been a Massive Theros leak
yeah, again, this time it's like 20 or so cards, no promos, mechanics and many other things. Probably some sort of full package was opened.

With Theros, Zendikar and a land titled "Lair of Behemoths" back to back to back, it looked like an exciting time to be a Kiora fan. But she wasn't in Theros, Nissa just went back to Zendikar in the plot, and Vivien was just spotted in Ikoria promo art. So it looks like there isn't any room for another Green planeswalker. Is there any good news you can share with Kiora fans?
Kiora has a lot of fans at Wizards. It’s just a matter of finding a good fit for her, setwise and storywise.
