The One with the Gossip
The group is hanging out at the café, all in different conversations when Jonathan comes into the bar and flops down on the couch. Camera bag sliding off his shoulders.
“When does this place start serving alcohol?” he groans.
“In about thirty minutes,” Nancy starts, “are you ok?”
Argyle trades places with Robin, sitting next Jonathan. “That bad?”
Jonathan nods, widening his eyes. “Messiest wedding I have worked months. There were so many things and they just piled on top of each other. The amount of bridesmaids and groomsmen that had previously slept together and didn’t know about it was insane.”
Steve and Eddie turn their heads at the same time. “What now,” Eddie says intrigued.
“I love messy shit I’m not apart of,” Steve mutters under his breath.
“It was crazy,” Jonathan sits up, turning toward Steve and Eddie at the side table. “And it all started for the most stupid reason. The guys apparently had a bet when to see how many of the bridesmaids they could sleep with. And the girls didn’t know about it, and a few of them fell with their ‘charms’ and were none the wiser. Until, one of the groomsmen said who won in their speech.”
“Holy shit,” Robin says with a sip of her tea.
Eddie winces. “That is such a dick move.”
“How likely was it that they were part of those fraternities that just liked to terrorize people,” Steve asks. Having almost accidently joined one of these fraternities when he was in college.
Jonathan nods with disgust. “That only scratches the surface. The best man had won, having slept with six out of the seven bridesmaids, and he was engaged to the maid of honor.”
Everyone winces with disgust.
“Not cool, dude,” Argyle says with disappointment. “So not cool. How can people do this to other people. And think that they can get away with it.”
“Because they’re inconsiderate assholes,” Steve says at the same the same time Eddie says “They’re disgusting bags of shit.” They high five each other.
Jonathan lets out a long breath. “And I’m not done yet. It gets worse.”
“Oh my god, how,” Nancy questions.
Argyle stands. “I’ll be right back, continue without me.” He walks over to the bar and starts to talk to the barista.
“He got bonus points for sleeping with the bride. And the second-place winner, was the groom.”
“Holy shit,” everyone says in unison.
Jonathan nods with wide eyes. “And the groom got a bonus point for sleeping with his future mother in law.”
They were too stunned to speak, just letting the silence fill that moment. Argyle returns with a cup of something and places it in Jonathan’s hands.
“What did I miss?” he asks, looking at them all super confused. “Are you guys broken?”
Steve shakes his head, trying to wrap his head around what was just said. “I don’t think I’ve heard that one before.”
“And this is coming from someone who has actually slept with one of his frat bro’s moms,” Robin interjects.
“On accident. And she was his stepmom, that was much younger than his dad, well after I was in college. He doesn’t know, it’s fine.”
“Did that cause another sex ban?” Eddie asks.
Steve laughs. “No, that’s when the figured out that the previous sex ban wasn’t working.”
Jonathan takes a sip of the drink Argyle gave him. “Jesus, that’s strong. Did you bribe them or something?”
“Something like that. Seriously though, what did I miss?”
“Groom slept with the future mother-in-law,” Robin fills in, Argyle winces. “What is with people?”
Jonathan shrugs. “Don’t know. But it was a big wedding that they are not getting a refund for. And I still got cake, well what was left of it.”
Eddie leans forward. “What was left of it?”
“Yeah,” Jonathan nods. “Speeches were right before cake, so the bride took the entire top layer and slammed it over the groom’s head. Followed by the maid of honor taking two giant handfuls and shoving it into the best man’s face. Arguments broke out and all that shit. I stayed back to help clean up.”
“Had they signed the marriage certificate yet?” Nancy asks.
Jonathan sighs. “No clue, don’t care. It’s over and I got paid. A lot. This was not a cheap wedding. Oh right,” Jonathan reaches down into his bag and grabs a takeout container, handing it to Argyle. “Saved you a piece of cake.”
Argyle takes it, opening it and starting to eat it. Nodding his head in appreciation.
The rest of the group looks at Jonathan. “Where’s our cake?” Robin asks, a little hurt.
“You don’t live with me, you don’t get cake.”

Penrose Song of the Day Day 24: We Might Even Be Falling In Love (Interlude) by Victoria Monet
Boy did I unexpectedly have a shitton to say about this one.
Have you ever heard a song and then just. Wished for more. I feel that way so often these days- in the age of the tiktok sample and the optimized 2 minute song for streams, there's something to be said for a song you can sink into and lose yourself to for 5, 6, 7 minutes at a time. Where is the Bohemian Rhapsody length song these days.
That's not to say that I hate 2 minute songs- I listen to enough Connor Price to admit it's ultimately fine for a song to be thrown off the pottery wheel after 2 minutes, fully formed. And tiktok samples are great honestly- usually the most interesting or expressive part of the song is the part that gets me to listen to the whole track. And I'll take my strikes of inspiriation anywhere thanks, even if occasionally it throws me a Fancy Like (And to be clear I, regrettably, fucking love Fancy Like. The mans has no taste, sorry guys).
But there's a special exquisite pain when you fall in love with a song that is not, strictly speaking, a song.
Victoria Monet is one of my favorite current artists and I've made absolutely NO secret of that. Jaguar II is a NO SKIPS album for me, she just kills it. Even lines I should NOT find charming (Titties bouncing and everything, anyone?) are just so excellent to me. She just has a way with a track that makes me buy in, right away.
We Might Even Be Falling In Love is my favorite track from Jaguar, and it's not even particularly close- there's about half an album of green hearts on this album too (She's consistent too. Dare I say GOAT status), but this 50 second NONSONG IS MY FAVORITE SONG FROM THE ALBUM.
The sultry, smooth fucking beat, that funk from the bassline that's so simple and then cuts out at the end. The melody is so catch, the brass warm and bright and like. I feel like I just hit a blunt in the best way possible and I am not a weed person (I did other drugs).
I knew that V. Monet was a top 5 artist of mine very early on, but I didn't admit it to myself until I took a long hard look at her other music and artist credits and realized she just had her hand on a vast swathe of my liked songs.
There's just something so smooth. So sexy. Very 70's in that way that I can see myself grinding with someone in an afro and bellbottoms. This song is going to be in my Spotify top 100 this year and it is NOT A REAL SONG.
Interludes and Intros are an almost lost art at this point on the album- I think that rap and r&b are the last bastions of both (Metal too but you're not ready for that convo) and the conventional album structure in general- which is fine! Not every album is a meticulously curated hour long tour, sometimes an album is "This is my setlist for coachella" or "look at my new singles". That's ok I think, there's no good way to release music and the entrenched hegemony of the album was due for a shakeup for a while (We saw that change heralded a billion times before the streaming era more or less killed the conventional album release for anyone not named Beyonce).
The point of an intro is to. Introduce the album. Novel I know. And unless your intro is DaBaby good, it's not a track that you're expecting to pop off as the best track on the album. Its job is to introduce. You learn some of the sound profile. A little of the flavor of the album. Themes, motifs, favorite samples. The artist's persona, that kinda thing.
Interludes? Palette cleansers. The change from one thing to another. Rather than some harsh cut from concept to concept you can ease through it with a sultry BOP THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN IT'S OWN SONG OK PLEASE VICTORIA I'M BEGGING.
Sometimes Interludes don't even get that title- I'd argue Smoke (Reprise) is also an interlude in Jaguar II despite missing the designation. But it serves much the same function. Smoke is a much more mid tempo, fat, low synth, vibe of a song and Smoke Reprise acts as good connective tissue to Buju Banton getting full Reggae on Party Girls.
And part of what makes We Might Even Be Falling In Love such a good interlude is that it works as good connective tissue too. I will be honest I HATE Dive. I love Victoria Monet, and I think the song has something to it, but I am not into the whole fuckin Squeaky Toy production this song has going on. I get it's bed squeaking or whatever. I know that it's supposed to be suggestive. It sounds awful. The thing is. The parts with the squeak absent are actually good. I like the melody. And like the idea we go from "Fuckin, the song" to "Maybe we're falling in love" as an interlude? And then into "I'm a Jaguar... in BED" is chefs kiss. That momentary "Wait am I catching feelings?" moment in musical form.
Anyways, We Might Even Be Falling In Love is SO good it makes me wish the song was 5 minutes long. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk. And honestly I'm glad I feel so passionate about Victoria's music. You should find something to listen to that you're passionate about too. You could be dead right now, go listen to something you love.

"Ready babe?" Yuta asks, smiling before squeezing his eyes shut.
You lived in a world where your 18th birthday determines how many years left you had. Once midnight strikes, the numbers would engrave onto your wrist like a tattoo yet painless. It would only be visible to you and no one else. Yuta’s birthday had passed first and he refused to let you know until you got your number.
You nodded excitedly before you shut your eyes as well. The two of you counted down in unison until the clock struck midnight. He opened his eyes and watched as you opened yours, eyes drifting to look at the little number that lay on your wrist. "What did you get, love?" He asked gently.
You looked up at him and smiled, "I got 68!"
He kissed your forehead before pulling you into a hug. "Me too babe."
Your grip on him tightened as you whispered a sweet 'I love you' into his chest. Yuta hugged tighter as he caught a glimpse on his wrist. "I love you too." He lets out, eyes concentrated at the little 3 that engraved onto his skin.

Yuta sat across the table from you, absorbed into the textbook. "Babe?" You called out quietly.
His eyes moved up to look at you, sitting there with your face rested on your arms. Your eyes were puppy like, something that he always loved about you. "When we graduate uni, can we move to Paris?" You asked.
His eyes curved into crescent moons, smiling wide as he ruffled your hair. "Of course babe."
Your eyes lit up at his answer. "Really?"
"Anything you'd like." He replies, amused with your wishes.
You scoot closer to him, "In that case, we can live close to the Eiffel Tower!"  Your voice got louder and excitement grew.
He hushed you as he chuckled, reminding you that you guys were in the school library. "Of course we can, but first let's ace this exam alright?" He asks and you nod.
Yuta kisses your cheek softly before helping you out with studying.

Yuta was on his way to the bus stop to school; the sun was shining and his music was blasting through his earphones. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath, inhaling the cool breeze in the air. His eyes suddenly shot open when he felt a strong impact on his back. Yuta turned off his music and turned to face the cause of the sudden movement. He found you hugging him tight with a bright smile plastered on your face. "Can I help you?" He chuckled at the sight.
"I got in! I got in babe!" You shouted in excitement. "I got into Tohoku University!"
Yuta turned and picked you up, spinning you around in the process. "That's my girl!" He exclaims, putting you back down on your feet. "I got in too."
If it was possible, he saw your smile grow bigger. "That's amazing!! I'm so proud of us!" Yuta’s heart melted at your words. "We're one step closer to moving to Paris."
"Let's ditch today, to celebrate of course!" He suggested.
Your head tilts in confusion. "Really? We just got accepted babe, we should keep our grades up at least." You laughed.
"I know, but one day won't hurt right?" He raised his brows at you.
You rolled your eyes playfully and smacked his arm, "Fine, take me away~"

It was late at night, his phone was burning hot from being on facetime for too long with you. He couldn't care less though, he loved listening to your crazy stories from your recent vacation. "And then he picked it up and—babe are you even listening?" You asked mid story.
He smiled and adjusted himself on his bed, his hand holding his head up. "Of course I am, I'm just admiring your beauty."
Yuta laughed when he saw your cheeks turn a bright red. "You're so cheesy it's gross." You muttered, hiding your blushing face.
"You know you love it."
There was a moment of silence as the two of you stared into the screen. "I want to spend the rest of my life with you Yuta." You say lovingly.
It was now Yuta’s turn to blush a bright red. "I want to spend the rest of my life with you too, love." He murmurs.
"I love you." You mumble.
He notices your sleepy tone. "I love you too baby. Get some sleep now, you sound tired."
"Okay, goodnight babe."

"I hate you so much!" You sob into his chest.
Yuta holds you tight, holding the laughter that was begging to come out. "I'm sorry babe, I didn't think you'd react like this."
Yuta had somehow convinced you to watch a horror movie with him. You were hesitant at first, but in the end, you agreed. It wasn't too bad until the scary scenes began to show. You got so spooked you started crying, hiding your face in Yuta’s chest.
"Stop laughing it's not funny!" You hit his chest, causing him to burst out laughing.
"Okay, okay I'm sorry love, we can turn it off if you want." He suggests, trying to contain his laughter.
Lifting your head up from his chest, you wipe your tears and sit back down beside him. "No it's okay," You whimper. "I wanna know how this ends."
He laughed harder, earning another smack from you. "Sorry babe, you're just so cute!" He pinches your cheek.
"Shut up." You glare at him.
Yuta pulls you closer to him, "Don't worry, I'll shield you if you get scared again."

You tried your best to conceal the tears that were threatening to leave your eyes. Naturally, Yuta had caught on after listening to you sniffle a thousand times over facetime. "Are you okay baby?" He asks, concern filling his voice.
"I-I'm fine." You weep.
"Y/N," He starts.
"Okay I lied, I'm not fine." You began to let the tears fall. "It's just, I'm so stressed, university is really kicking my ass right now." You continued to cry.
Yuta felt helpless just sitting in front of the screen. He wanted to hold you tight and calm you down. His heart heart seeing you cry. "I know it's hard baby," He says, worry evident in his voice. "How about this, I pick you up in 10 and I take you out on a night drive to make you feel better?"
You smiled at your boyfriend and wiped your tears away. "Yes please." You tried to calm yourself.
He smiled into the camera and stood up, grabbing his keys and his jacket. "Perfect, I'll see you soon babe!"

Yuta had taken you to a park at midnight. It was peaceful; it was quiet and the only noise was the sound of your laughter. The two of you were on your back, looking up at the night sky and stargazing.
As his eyes wandered the starry night, his mind began to wander as well. He wondered if you'd be mad at him for lying to you 3 years ago on your birthday. He wondered how you would cope after he died a month from now. Yuta felt his heart slowly breaking with each passing hour as his death day awaits him.
"You know I love you a lot right?" Your comforting voice said, interrupting his thoughts.
He turned over sideways to look at you. "Of course I do." He said, caressing your cheek.
"No like a lot." You shifted so that you were facing him too. "I love you so much Yuta, more than I can even explain."
Yuta pulled you close and gave you a passionate, loving kiss. "I love you too Y/N, more than you could imagine."
1 day left
It was past noon and he woke up late. He had the entire day planned to spend his last day with you but he woke up late. He got up faster than ever and began to get ready to surprise you. As he was about to leave the door, the personalized ringtone set for you rang in his pocket.
"Hey babe—"
"Yuta?" He was confused as to why he didn't hear your voice on the other line. Instead, he heard your mom.
"Oh, uh hi Mrs. Y/L/N." He says.
"I'm so sorry, Y/N passed in her sleep." She replies, weakly.
Yuta’s world stopped, "S-sorry?" He stammers, unable to register what he just heard.
"She never told you? She's had cancer for the last 3 years, I'm sorry Yuta."
He managed to thank your mother for letting him know before hanging up. He felt his eyes water, a tear escaping his left eye as he sat down on the cold floor. He held onto his phone and he opened it; his lock screen was set to a picture of you. Yuta held his phone tightly to his chest, the tears slowly falling as he smiled,
"See you soon."
