Currently Rereading: Does teaching the Giver to my students count as re reading it? I'll claim it
Last Series: I was doing a Supernatural re binge to mentally prep myself to watch s15 for the forst time but I got off track
Sweet, Savory, or Spicy: depends on what's the candidate for each. I'll just say my favorite for each. Special pancake from this local Dutch place, shrimp fried rice, and Indian lamb curry now I'm hungry--
Currently working on: lesson plans and also a Markiplier Egos fanfic don't look at me

Your Tabenon characters are great, too! Zazriel caught my eye (because how does a monk come to serve a goddess called Murder?), as did Thalia (What does she look like?), as well as Taffeta and Linen (because they sound super mysterious oooo). The same as the Myriad ask, just tell my some of their characteristics/backstory, why you love them, etc! I'd love to know more about them!
righteo i was so tired when this came in that i put it off for today. but at least now i got a couple screencaps of Thalia
Sooo Zazriel. yes. He was a monk in that he was raised in a monastery. Before he was born, his mother’s village was attacked by a roving pack of demons who... uh... yeah. When she realized she was pregnant, his mother fled to a nearby monastery where she died in childbirth. He was raised among the monks, but was mocked andabused for his inhuman appearance: red skin, black eyes, curved horns. He excelled in magics despite everything, and eventually struck out on his own. As he wandered the world, a goddess reached out to him. She called herself Murder, as she found it amusing that the word could refer to a killing or a group of her favorite birds. He dedicated his life to her service in exchange for divine powers, like a good paladin. He is registered with the Church, but tends to act alone. He’s very old, much older than he appears, so old that nobody even remembers the name of his village when he asks about it. I love that he’s this super serious straight man a la Guts from Berserk, but almost accidentally he’s becoming more playful and sarcastic as the story plays out.
Thalia is one of my favorites, despite how minor a character she feels imo. But every time there’s a character creator, I try to make her first. Pretty happy with how she came out in Code Vein.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is some ways into her service to Tuule, hence the blue lips and draconic eye. Her red hair is turning blond like his, and she’s physically becoming more imposing and impressive. She used to live with a barbarian vampire coven that treated her like the runt of the litter; when Zaz, Tuule, and Veera moved to attack it for a bounty, she decided to help them in exchange for becoming Tuule’s slave (a normal thing in dragon culture). If nothing else, it’s been a boon to have a nocturnal member who can drive the wagon through the night.
Taffeta takes up the last two thousand-ish words of Chapter 5 of A Typical Adventure, though yeah it’s pretty smutty so I get if you don’t wanna read though it all. Lemme just paste a trimmed down excerpt:
Taffeta didn’t answer. She muttered to herself for a moment, then reached up and removed her helmet. Annie winced when she saw her face, but the others maintained their composure.Taffeta’s face was covered in rough, badly-healed scars. Two especially large ones ran back across her face from the corners of her mouth, making her mouth look like a huge crooked frown. Her head was shaved, but clearly not by choice; her scalp was woven with more scars, from pressure cuts and burns. Both ears were missing small chunks. Her eyebrows had been burned off, and her nostrils had been sliced from the inside out. But her eyes... Her eyes were clear and fierce. The purple irises seemed to glow with an internal fire.“I am Taffeta. This is Linen,” she said. Without the helmet, her voice was deep and strong, despite a slight rasp. When she spoke the other name, a fist-sized tendril of purple slime rose from her breastplate. It stuck up next to her face, and seemed to look around at the other adventurers, appraising them. It almost-glowed with the same light Taffeta’s eyes did. “We travel as one.”...Zaz took two steps forward so that his hand hovered just in front of Taffeta’s chin, palm up. The slime waved back and forth slightly as if making up its mind, then laid the bulbous end of the tendril into his hand. The others didn’t see anything happen, but he could feel the slime, experience it. He got a sense for its history—and by extension Taffeta’s. Hunger, pain, hate, relief, fear, power, vengeance, peace, loneliness. All of this understood in only a few seconds. ...Linen coated her entire body, even most of her face, acting as the liner between her bare skin and the metal armor. It fed off her, but also fed her. It could put superhuman strength into her movements with a thought, or harden its viscous body to protect Taffeta against blows even her armor wouldn’t survive, or—with Taffeta’s aid—absorb an ungodly amount of magical energy and feed it back to her. She fed off the magical energy it absorbed to weave magics that would be impossible for anyone weaker than a lesser demon. The slime sustained her in ways she had thought impossible. She protected Linen, and obtained more food for it than it could ever hope to stumble upon by itself in the woods. It could consume anything, dissolving food and liquid into its body, then feed her carefully-crafted parts of itself to pass on the sustenance she needed. Each were weak in their own ways, but together they were stronger than most mortals. They gave each other life, in a quite literal sense.
She is the newest character in Tabenon and I adore her. I was basically making up details about her background and physicality as I wrote it, but I was delighted with how it came out, if not how info-dumpy it feels. She’s going to be a real powerhouse in the party, even among a couple dragons and a superpowered vampire and a holy paladin and a girl with a musket. I can’t wait to get my writing wind back and get into the next chapter!

OR do the much easier option. Allistics can stop...
by OP’s logic we shouldn’t give a child born without a leg a prosthetic and teach them to walk because that’s making them conform to society or some shit. Newsflash, honey, everyone, regardless of what they are, has to conform. If you want to be seen as equal in society you can’t expect it to cater to you all the time.

I’m 18, been into the show since about fifteen and generally I like your art. It’s cute and your reasoning for liking the ship is not based around age but their bond/dynamic. All romantic stuff is clearly them as adults, so I see no problem with it.
You were so accurate talking about the base, it’s definitely not ages what matters for me in this ship. As I said before these ages were never even spoken in the show and they have no influence on characters like it was in ATLA for example. And that’s why children don’t care about it, just because in the show we look first of all at personalities, characters and not at bunch of persons with their age written on their forehead. We look at characters development, at support they give to each other, at actions they make, at all the good things we can absorb from them. That’s what the show is about and that’s why ages were never directly spoken there. It’s simply not about that.

Oohh really? I haven't watched Korra at all. But I did hear comments saying it wasn't that great. May I ask, out of curiosity, why Korra wasn't great?
I haven't watched either, the reason being that many of my friends told me about how bad it was.
Korra is apparently just a very unlikable character and the majority of her popularity with the fandom rides on the fact that she's bisexual, except she's insufferable about it. Iirc, she's also a Mary Sue and able to master things much quicker than Aang was (cause eeeewwww boys!! girlboss!!). Yeah, master of 3 elements by age 4, nevermind most avatars only began at 16 with Aang being the exception because of his circumstances.
Also they made Toph a cop for some reason. They did an Avatar origin story which was terrible, and then at the very end of the series Korra "brings back" the air nation by doing ~spirit world stuff~ and just randomly gifting air bending powers to randos from other nations. So forget the cultural importance of being Air Nomads, amirite? Also she erased all the past incarnations of the avatar from existence. So fuck Aang I guess.
@timetravelingshark can probably explain it better than I can

All of your characters are so interesting!! The ones from The Myriad that caught my eye the most, though, have to be Omni (because he reminds me of myself lmao), Thia (Because "got exploded and can now make holograms" is too interesting to just leave at that!!), Panzer (because he sounds like the type of character I'm Soft(tm) for) and Torch (because "TORCH!"). Can you tell me more about them, just some general details abt them, why you love them, etc?
ohhhh lordy, alright. the buzz is gone so hopefully i can get this right. got rambly again so it’s going under the cut
Omni! he’s one of the first Myriad troops I settled on, found his niche. He’s the second-youngest member behind Neff. He spent his childhood in an orphanage in western California, but ran away around 13 (he’s not actually sure when he was born) to Pismo. He gets his name from an intersection there, Harloe Price. He spent his teenage years panhandling, busking, working odd jobs, as well as a couple... less savory methods of earning a living. He spent a lot of his free time reading textbooks, informational websites, such like. As a result he can build just about anything, fix anything, and has an unholy wealth of trivia tucked away in his head. On what he decided was his 18th birthday, he walked into a Marine recruiting office to fight at Alantis. The war ended while he was still in training, but he had a short service nonetheless. Eventually, he was dishonorably discharged for disobeying orders and acting outside his rank, but his comrades all tried to defend his actions which they claim had saved their lives. He worked a few years as a mercenary, one of several unusual occupations that sprung up during and in the wake of the Atlantean War. This is how he met Thia, and almost accidentally was recruited into the Myriad where he serves as the tech specialist. He’s shy, but happily rambles about his interests at the slightest provocation. He’s responsible for most of the Myriad’s unique equipment, including his own light machine gun that can fire either caseless bullets or hardlight darts. Though he usually stays behind the front line, providing indirect fire support, field intel, and other supportive actions.
Thia is... a peculiar case. She was born Elizabeth Scarborough into something like an aristocratic family in New England. Her parents used CRISPR to fiddle with her genetic makeup as a fetus, ensuring they’d get the perfect daughter. And it basically worked, except all the genetic engineering in the world can’t construct a specific morality. Elizabeth grew to resent her parents even as she ate from a silver spoon. She was raised more by the mansion staff than her parents, who heaped unbearable expectations upon her shoulders without entertaining any of her own personal interests. Despite this, she managed to secretly earn a degree in archeology. When the Atlantis Draft came, she signed on as a Specialist against her parents’ direct orders. As a Specialist, she was escorted deep into the fabled city to recover pieces of ancient technology, or translate inscriptions, or other so-called Recovery Operations that a jarhead was unsuited for. On one such Recovery, her escort came under heavy fire, and a hardlight reactor was damaged. It exploded, embedding thousands of fragments of itself into her skeleton. She was sent home with honors. There was a warm welcome from the mansion staff who had become her family, though not her parents. They saw her many small scars as deformities, as a ruination of their perfect child. They intended to write her out of the will, but she hired Omni to kill them before they could. For a while, her life was peaceful and boring. She spent her days practicing her newfound abilities: the hardlight reactor fragments in her body somehow still functioned. By sunbathing, she charges her reactor; it reacts to the electrical signals traveling through her nervous system, and she soon figured out how to create hardlight items from her very skin. As a trained fencer, swords came naturally. Just as she started to get the hang of it, Gross approached her to recruit her to the Myriad. She didn’t have anything better to do. Omni--her hitherto bodyguard--came along.
Panzer and Torch both have their intro chapters MOSTLY written. When those are done they’ll go up on my ao3. I’ll keep their bios here short.
Panzer is a career military man. He was a marine in the Atlantean War, leading platoons on boarding parties to cripple or destroy enemy ships. Back on the homefront, he worked as a bouncer at a club where he met Neff--a prolific party girl. When he got the call from Gross, he was ecstatic. He’s so happy to be back in his comfort zone. He’s extremely protective and soft-spoken around those he cares about, but to his enemies he is a giant demon laughing in his bloodlust.
Torch was a navy pilot, but she was a little too good. She was pulled from the front lines, much to her chagrin, to serve as a test pilot for new military aircraft. One such test went horribly wrong, and she was bedridden for weeks in a full body cast. When it came off, she saw her entire body was marked by burn scars, despite every other serious injury healed good as new. The treatment didn’t take as it should’ve. She didn’t care, all she wanted was to fly. But after such an injury, the military offices turned her away. She managed to finally find a job flying commerical civilian flights, but the call from Gross couldn’t come soon enough. Now, she flies the Albatross for the Myriad, and loves their dropship like a child. She’s positively manic most of the time, but distant. Her sentences are a bit stilted most of the time. In battle, she wields incendiary weapons that spread panic and napalm among the enemy.
here is a link to my drabble collection that has a bit more flesh in it (i hope this link works, i’ve always had trouble sharing google drive folders)
aaaaaand this is a link to what i call The First Report, which was the first actual thing I wrote about the Myriad. Most of it is non-canon now, or outdated, or blantantly different from what’s in the novel i’m slowly writing and posting to ao3, but it’s a good place to start.
hope that answers your questions, lol

New Fic: Chained in Servility
This is an off-schedule post, but I have my reasons for doing this. There’s one chapter in the Divide arc that touches on a few of the concepts and characters introduced in this fic. Without this context, much of that chapter is extremely confusing. This will not impact posting of the Divide arc. I’ll just be posting two updates on Fridays until both that and this are concluded.
Links: [AO3][FFN][Wattpad] Or read below the cut
Rating: T
Characters: Raven Branwen, Qrow Branwen, OCs
Content Warning(s): Implied/referenced child abuse in later chapters
Summary:
All your faith in ancient ways, Leaves you trapped inside a maze Chained in servility and made to see The world Without a way to see the truth
Preview:
It looks like the village of Shiro’s under attack from Grimm. Can’t say I’m surprised. The village had fallen on hard times over the past several active seasons, so the Grimm attack was inevitable. Even so, it didn’t stop a rock from dropping into the pit of her stomach.
We need to get over there as quickly as possible. It’ll be our last raid for the active season. Get down here now. She returned her father’s whistle with an affirmative response before she slashed her sword in the air and opened a portal below her. She dropped through and appeared next to Fallon, getting a curse of surprise from her brother. She just grinned at him and he swatted her upside the head, getting Fallon to clear his throat. Raven straightened up and nodded as she gathered the reins in her hands, pulling herself into the saddle. With a small click, Dena took off at a trot while she followed behind her father, Qrow to her right.
This is a quick but very special thank you to @timetravelingshark. They made a post about the Branwen tribe and its culture and they graciously allowed me to use it as the basis for my take on the tribe. There will be alterations and expansions since I do have my own ideas. Even so, I truly am grateful for the agreement!
The first couple of chapters will just be middling around to show some of the cultural concepts so the stuff with Beacon won’t be immediate. I’m a worldbuilder, so showing off this sort of stuff is what I love. Plus, if anybody reads anything else with Raven, this will give some pretty big insight as to why she acts the way she does. I hope y’all can bear with me while I plod around for a couple of chapters. Needless to say, since this is a coherent culture and not just “hurr we b thugz,” there will be little resembling canon here.
There will also be a lot to unpack due to how dense this is. You’ll be able to find a short glossary at the end of the chapter of some of the specific terms that’ll be used consistently.
There is a really lame action scene in here which I’ll apologise for now. I am terrible at them. I’m a character/worldbuilding writer, not an action one, so hopefully, those aspects will make up for it.
Also, things showcased in this fic and Die are not meant to excuse any of Raven’s canon actions; her behaviors are beyond problematic. These fics just drop hints to explain why she made the choices she did.
By the way, if you think you can figure out what I think Raven’s Semblance means symbolically in regards to her personality, feel free to give your thoughts in the comments.
Anyway, onto the fic!
Raven shielded her eyes with her hand, squinting a bit as she saw the smoke in the distance. The cold air carried the acrid scent to her throat and she shivered a bit before glancing at the ground, letting off a series of whistles.
Silence hung over the combat party and Fallon nodded Raven to the left a little further and she sucked in a breath. Head of the rescue party. Third time this season. But she was glad her father was trusting her. With her now of age and as the next chief, she needed to take on more responsibility during the active seasons. She wasn’t about to let him down. Thankfully, she hadn’t screwed up yet…
She looked at her half of the party and they nodded while Fallon took the other half through the forest. The village was still a quarter hour’s ride away, so the raiding party had to be ready in case any Grimm were still in the area. Given how bad things had to be, she wouldn’t be surprised if the Nuckelavee had made its presence known. She could only shiver at the thought and sent a prayer skyward that the despair hadn’t been that bad. Even parties of eighty tribesmen had trouble with the hellish demon.
Over the next quarter hour, Raven maintained contact with her father through whistling and pulled in one last breath as she heard the sound of screams. Loud trumpets rang through the forest and she flinched, pulling her simple sword from its sheath. She turned toward the group and nodded. “Two Goliaths, probably around a hundred years old. It’ll be tough, but we can take them. The hunting party should arrive in twenty minutes or so.” SHe was thankful the two parties had split just a day prior. If she’d seen the smoke, then they would have too. THe last raid of the season would be too tempting to avoid.
“Robin, Luna, take your parties to the west. Finn and I will meet up with you on the eastern Goliath.” The two women and man nodded and she spurred Dena forward.
Two Goliaths raised in the village square. The distinct sound of dust cartridges rang in her ears and she smiled, relieved that a number of Hunters were in the area and like on the Grimms’ tails. She saw any number of bodies strewn around but she ignored it and squeezed Dena’s sides as she charged past the dozen Hunters and slid into the Goliath’s path.
The massive Grimm let out a trumpeting cry, shouts of confusion from the Hunters mingling with them. She ignored it and Finn wound the rope between the Goliath’s legs. Luna’s black mare narrowly missed clipping Dena, but Raven pulled out a moment later. The Goliath crashed to the ground, followed shortly by the second one.
She dismounted and joined the attacking parties, driving her sword into the massive Grimm until it dissipated into black smoke. She breathed a sigh of relief and turned to her tribemates, giving a warm smile and nod of approval. Goliaths were awful to take down, so the fact they’d managed two in tandem was nothing short of a miracle.
With that done, she turned her attention back to the ruined village. Her heart sank as the devastation finally hit her. The once-beautiful village lay in ruin and the majority of the townsfolk lay dead. Luna, Robin, and Finna gazed at her, making her steel herself. She was their leader; she’d have time for mourning later. “Luna, southeast quadrant. Finn, take the southwest. Robin, northwest. My party will take the northeast.” The party leaders nodded and headed for their respective areas.
It was hard to believe she’d been trading in the village marketplace just two active seasons ago. The tribe had sent some of their surplus crops to help try to ease the pestilence that had struck. She’d been there for the better part of the spring and summer, so she’d gotten to know the people well. She bit back tears as too many familiar faces stared back with glassy eyes. Yuri, Chiako, Kome, Ryo, Keita, Naoya, Kafu… They weren’t much older than her, yet she was about to give them their last rites…
She bowed her head and covered her mouth, letting a few tears escape. She fanned out the fingers on her free hand, placing it over each face she recognised. “May you soar free in the sky.” Unfortunately, this and the funeral were all she could do for her now-fallen friends.
A groan from a nearby rubble pile made Raven jump and she hurried over, starting to move the debris out of the way. She winced when she heard coughing and looked around. “Wren, help! There’s somebody trapped! I need your Semblance now!” The boy nodded and flicked a finger, the rubble shooting up into the air. Raven’s eyes widened when she saw Jia underneath, blood dribbling over her lip. Her leg stuck out at an odd angle, making Raven wince, but she settled next to the other girl who stare at her owlishly.
“R-Raven…? Y-You…c-came…” She coughed again and Raven squeezed her shoulder as she nodded.
“Yeah, I’m here, Jia. How badly are you hurt?” Her crimson eyes sparked as her friend leaned against her, coughing her lungs out. She didn’t need to know about her leg since that much was evident. It was the internal injuries that worried her.
“Not sure how much longer I’ll make it…” Raven’s heart froze. Oh ancestors no. She couldn’t lose her!
“I’ll get you back to the village; our healer can—” Jia coughed again and her whole body shuddered, her eyes fluttering. She was in severe shock and bleeding internally. She couldn’t just sit around any longer. She pulled the girl onto her back, ignoring the sharp intake of break as she grabbed her dagger and swung it through the air, focusing on her grandmother’s aura. The old woman’s head snapped up, eyes round, but she nodded. With that, Raven returned and set herself back to work.
By time the sun set, they’d sorted through the bodies and Raven bowed her head. Out of about a thousand people, only ten had survived. She’d had to run back to the village three other times with critical cases like Jia. She felt bad for draining so much of her grandmother’s dwindling magic, but they were strong warriors. If they stayed with the tribe, it’d be all the stronger for it. The dozen or so Hunters that had protected the town had already gone, leaving the Branwen tribe to clean up as usual.
Fallon looked to Raven and she nodded, stepping forward to the numerous pyres. Her lips trembled as she summoned forth the words she’d heard her father use numerous times before. “People of the world, we honor you tonight. Though you weren’t of the tribe, many of you fought and died bravely, trying to protect what you cared about so dearly. Your sacrifices still did little to stop the Grimm, but you fought with great heart and determination. In the name of our ancestors and your families, we send you to the sky. May this final rite soothe your spirits so they may soar free.”
She clasped her hands in front of her and bowed her head, tears rolling down her cheeks. Fires lit in the night and tossed onto the large pyres. She wrinkled her nose and held back the gag reflex. No matter how many times she’d experience this, she doubted the scent of burning flesh would ever settle with her. At the very least, the dead got their final rites…
Active season: Beings mid to late spring, lasts until mid fall. This is the time members of the tribe go out from their permanent village, broken into two parties: combat and trading.
The combat group tends to raid villages that have fallen or are falling to Grimm attacks. They don’t always see good seasons, so they often take out Grimm that are causing serious issues that Hunters would have trouble with. They’ll also raid villages if they are extremely low on supplies themselves, but this is a last resort. When not battling, they tend to gather resources like seasonal foods and meat from animals to eventually give to the trading group.
The trading group tends to spend more time among outsiders while actively trading for supplies. They get many from the combat group as they meet up every 4-8 weeks to exchange supplies. About half of this group tends to be dedicated specifically to acting as go betweens for any excess the permanent village has that they can trade and sell.
Inactive season: Beings mid fall and lasts until mid to late spring. The tribe lives nestled deep in the mountains of Anima which means snow is a huge issue. It’s just not worth risking leaving the village, so they cozy up and all stay there.
The tribe does know how the solar year works, but they tend to just tell time by the standard seasons and active/inactive seasons. They live a mostly simple agrarian lifestyle with some aspects of hunter/gatherer, so they don’t feel the need to use specific months and days.
Also the whistling! For those of you that don’t know, whistle languages are a real thing that exist. They’re just generally isolated in mountainous regions. The languages also have to be tonal for it to work (something like Chinese). If you want to see an example, just put “piraha whistle” into YouTube. I find them fascinating and love them, hehe.
