Discussion with my climbing instructor …
Instructor: I think most people who climb probably have autism or are at least on the neurodiverse spectrum
Me: Why? (internally feeling a bit seen)
Instructor: we mainly get two types of people at the wall, the ones who get obsessed about routes and figuring out puzzles. And the ones who get really into climbing, buy all the kit, and then stop when they don’t get it after a short while
—-
So here’s me with new shoes, new harness, full membership and a block of lessons - as well as loads of new podcasts/books about climbing. I think he knows which one I am and I realise that a new hyper focus is in full swing

Extremely bummed that my Indian Creek season has come to an end since I’ll be going back to Virginia for Thanksgiving. By the time I come back to Utah, the days are so short and I think it’d be miserably cold, plus I’m eager to ski!
I’m proud of myself for what I’ve accomplished out there in the last month. I spent a total of 10 days there, which isn’t a ton by any means but I was able to get a lot done. Going into the season, I had goals to get my first 5.12 on gear as well as getting mileage on 11’s. Despite no 5.12 send (I’m a scaredy cat), I was able to knock out 10 5.11’s! I’m proud of myself that the 11’s I did were not strictly thin hands, but also involved some bigger jams. I wanted to make sure that I could do a range of sizes minus offwidth haha. Managed to flash/onsight all but 1 route! For the spring season, I plan on getting on 11+ and some 12’s since I feel so comfy on 11’s!
Pictures is me on Crack Attack 5.11-, one of my favorite creek routes due to the variety!

Today at the climbing wall …
Instructor: [to group] what are you main fears and worries about climbing?
Group: like heights, maybe falling, not being flexible enough
Me: that I’m too heavy for my belayer to stop me falling
Instructor: ahh (looks up and down my body, then at the tiny woman next to me) yeah, that might be a problem. In a wall it’s easy, your belayer just attaches to a sandbag and then lifts completely off the ground.
Me: what about outside?
Instructor: you’ll just have to attach yourself to a really big rock.
I can confirm this has in no way reduced my fear.

This is essentially my backyard and I feel so damn fortunate to be here. Little Cottonwood season has commenced and my stoke is so high for the trad climbing here!
