(-genos is the suffix I'm using for gender flags that are designed specifically for otherkin so that they're distinct from other xenogenders. It's greek for 'gender'.)

As an obligatory disclaimer, no, allistic people, autigender doesn't actually mean autism is a gender that you can transition to. That's not what it means and not what it's saying. (though some autistic people do see autism/being autistic as their gender, and that's perfectly fucking fine, thank you very much).

Autigender means that your understand of gender/gender identity is impacted or influenced by your being autistic. Gender is a social construct, and being autistic can mean you see it differently than allistic people do. (And no, just because you're autistic and 'understand' gender just fine and don't think it influences your gender at all does not give you the right to be ableist and attack autistic people who do experience what autigender describes! Being autistic does not give you the right to attack other autistic people!)

These pins are made for fun, not to be an educational treatise to get ableist transphobes to stop attacking autistic trans people.

Leave autigender people alone or I'll fucking maul you.

(This leads on from these two posts, in order: here and here )

To go back briefly to Stede's masculine presentation - his outward performance of queerness mirrors his inward experience (I'd argue that in Season 1 he's not aware of this, but that's another post). From what we see of his childhood and his treatment by the Badmintons, his difference has been a source of torment, both at the hands of others and of himself. He's not "manly" enough, and he's internalized that feeling without fully comprehending why. This could easily get warped into toxicity, with him attempting to prove that he is manly enough by forcing himself into the "real man" role insisted on by his father and the Badmintons. And maybe he has done that, at some point, and been ridiculed for it, much as he's initially ridiculed about his attempts at piracy. Regardless, when we meet him we meet a closeted gay man, so repressed he's likely unaware of his own repression, who is also both unwilling and incapable of suppressing at least his outward expression.

Stede's queerness almost immediately affects those around him. He embraces and encourages emotional expression in others, perhaps in part as a result of being told that his own emotional expression was unacceptable. His care for his crew manifests in encouraging them to be creative - he brings them together with the flag making competition, and throughout the show he treats them with kindness and support, in all their idiosyncrasies. He encourages them to talk about their feelings and what they want to do, and gives them space to do it in. As a result, they feel safe enough to express themselves in increasingly open ways - as Jim removes their beard and nose, Wee John begins to knit, Lucius draws his crewmates naked, etc.

Stede not only doesn't insist on his crew performing categorical gender or sexual roles, he doesn't seem to even think of those roles as relevant beyond the individual. It doesn't matter that Buttons is in love with the sea; he's a good first mate, and his love is a part of who he is. It doesn't matter whether Jim is male, female, or nonbinary; they are a total badass, and a valued member of the crew, and their gender identification is a part of that. A man whose self-presentation has been ridiculed and derided his entire life doesn't even think about deriding others. It doesn't occur to him as a thing he could or should do.

It's very important that this is not about Stede being oblivious to gender or sexuality (or race or class), but quite simply not considering hierarchies and power structures something he needs to police or enforce. He creates a safe space for his crew, and he's aware and defensive of it when that space is violated - by the English, by Izzy, and by Calico Jack. The result is a crew who love him deeply - who shock Chauncey by their loyalty - and who miss him when he's gone. They want to protect him; the one time Lucius lashes out at Ed in Season 1, it's because he sees how hard Stede is trying and is furious that Ed is being a dick about it. Stede is flawed and complicated, and as Lucius says, a bizarre little man, but he's loved in part because even his flaws come from a place of emotional vulnerability and openness.

This is extraordinarily important for what happens in Season 2 with Izzy. Following the events on the Revenge and the "murder" of Ed, Izzy is completely unmoored. He's lost his leg, but he's also lost his identity, at one point staring at himself in the mirror and asking what he even is. He staggers around the ship drunk, shouting at the headless unicorn, swearing at the crew, his leg literally breaking under the weight of his anger. He does not expect sympathy or love; he even wants Stede to lash out at him when Stede discovers Ed's death. He's lost all power. If Blackbeard no longer exists, what does that make Izzy?

Izzy has existed within a masculine hierarchy in which his power is dependent on his maintaining his place within it. He is Blackbeard's first mate, he knows his job, and he will do it even if Ed doesn't want him to. Stede threatens that position by his fluidity and his soft masculinity, and not playing by the rules that Izzy has been governed by (likely his entire life). Izzy initially wants to control Stede's emotions too - he tells him not to cry, then asks him to "do your worst." But Stede still declines to play the game - he's not going to burst into tears. He's not going to fly into a rage. He won't fill the role Izzy wants him to. Now Izzy has "lost" according to his own rules - he's been rendered impotent and nameless, without even Stede's anger to push back against.

But Izzy is not therefore abandoned, and Stede's ethos has so permeated the crew that they set aside their own trauma to help someone in greater need. Their project of making Izzy's new leg takes an object that he had expressed identification with - the unicorn - and applies their collective love and creativity to refashioning it for him, as a support. It's a near repeat of the first episode's flag making competition, though this time Stede himself is physically absent as a driving force.

The crew's collective effort isn't an imposition of love, but an offering of it - it's up to Izzy whether to accept it or to continue to descend into the horrors of his "broken" masculinity. Izzy first identifies himself with the broken unicorn (an "impossible" animal that has historical and cultural resonance for the LGBTQ+ community) and then accepts the crew's offer and voluntarily makes it a part of himself. It is an acceptance not just of the love of the crew, but an integration of queerness - the ethos that he tried so hard to belittle and reject as "unmasculine" - into his masculine presentation. No one else sees his brokenness as shameful, and he takes the first steps into breaking free of the shame he and the broader hierarchy of masculinity has imposed on him. This may be the first time that we see Izzy give a genuine smile and cry tears not associated with pain.

Izzy doesn't suddenly stop being the person he is. He still swears, he still insults the crew (with a loving "cocksuckers"), he still mocks Stede, he still wears leather and prides himself on his physical skills. But he begins to open up, to step outside the hierarchy he has so intensely and painfully tried to adhere to, to break the rules that toxic masculinity has imposed on him.

(I'll go into the final point of the arc and Izzy's acceptance of Ed and Stede's relationship later.)

OC Interview: Valerie Hye-jin Li (aka Grandpa V)

NGL these are some unusual (and not the most serious) interview questions. So, I was trying to think of a scenario in which V would actually answer these questions. (Because mind you, she normally wouldn't and especially not for a total stranger.) Luckily, I know just the reporter… I may have gone a little overboard with this, but I think I just needed something light and fluffy in between all the angst and carnage that I’m currently writing.

The TLDR version is all the way at the bottom under the cut, so if you’d prefer not to read all of this and just want the quick and dirty on the questions. There you are.

[The scene opens at Red Peaks Trailer Park. Moving closer we get an exterior view of the Kutcher residence before transitioning to the common area inside. Late morning light filters in from the windows. A tired, very bedraggled looking V is sitting in the corner of the booth. She has bedhead, is wearing an oversized t-shirt, lounge shorts, and is nursing her coffee. She takes a sip. Turning toward the hallway we see Monique appear. There is a sparkly unicorn on her pink shirt. She has a fistful of crayons in one hand and a screamsheet along with several blank pieces of paper in the other.]

Monique: (staring awkwardly) Auntie V, are you busy?

V: (fidgeting in her seat. uncomfortable) Um… Not really. Why?

Monique: Can I ask you some questions?

V: (hesitant) What kind of questions?

[Monique moves to sit next to V. Setting down her crayons and paper on the table, Monique shows V the screamsheet she was carrying. It’s an interview article on US Cracks and Kerry Eurodyne from some teen magazine.]

Monique: These. I’m practicing being a media reporter.

V: (blinking in surprise) Uh... Sure? I guess.

Monique: Yay! Okay, first question. What’s your name? Oh, I already know this one.

[Picking up a purple crayon, Monique writes the letter V on one of the blank pieces of paper. It takes up most of the page. After jotting that down she squints at the magazine. Concentrating.]

Monique: How tall are you?

V: 5’ 3”.

[Switching to a green crayon, Monique writes the number 53 on the page. She squints some more at the magazine.]

Monique: (trying to sound out the word she’s reading) Ge– What does that word say?

V: Gender? Female. I’d say I’m a girl.

Monique: But you don’t like the color pink?

V: Not really. Not all girls like pink.

Monique: (nodding sagely) But you do like purple. That’s my favorite color.

V: Yeah. I do like purple.

[Monique writes the word girl in yellow crayon before trying to read the next question off the magazine.]

Monique: Um… What’s that word?

V: Orientation. I’m bisexual.

Monique: What does that mean?

V: I like girls and boys.

Monique: I do to. Though sometimes Dorian and Alex are mean to me when we’re playing.

V: That’s not… Nevermind. (muttering) I'll leave that one to your Mom and Uncle.

[V picks up the purple and pink crayon and draws a little bisexual pride flag on the corner of Monique’s notes. The colors aren’t quite right.]

V: …What’s your next question? Nationality/Ethnicity? Born and raised in Night City, but I’m half Korean, quarter Chinese, and a quarter Danish.

Monique: (confused) Danish? Like the cake?

V: No, like Denmark. The country… Cake? You mean the pastry with the filling in it?

Monique: Yeah! Mom always has one when she brings us donuts. The cherry ones are her favorite. Where’s Denmark?

V: Pretty far away.

Monique: Mm, okay.

[V watches as Monique attempts to draw a pastry on her notes. Cherry filling, of course.]

Monique: Next question… Star sign!

V: Uh… Libra. I think?

Monique: What’s that mean?

V: (shrugging) No idea.

Monique: (shrugs back) Okay.

[Zooming in on we see Monique draw a star and write the word ‘Lebra’. The ‘L’ is written backwards.)

Monique: Favorite fruit?

V: Pomegranate.

Monique: I don’t think I’ve ever eaten one of those.

V: Kind of a weird fruit. I’ve only eaten it twice. I like that they’re crunchy, the fruit’s around all the little seeds. They’re a pain in the ass to eat though.

[Monique looks at V.]

V: How about I draw it, since you’ve never eaten one and then you can ask me the next question.

[Monique nods. V picks up the red crayon and starts doodling. It’s a piss poor rendition.]

Monique: Favorite season?

V: In NC, winter. It’s not as hot as it usually is.

[Monique draws a snowflake. She's probably never seen snow. But neither has V.]

Monique: Favorite flower?!

V: Mmm… Cactus flowers.

Monique: The big ones or the little ones?

V: Uh, the small ones. With all the round… leaves? Is that what they are?

Monique: Prickly pears!? I like those ones too! The pink ones are my favorite. There’s some over by Auntie Lora’s trailer. Dorian’s always looking for bugs in them. Bleh!

[Monique draws something resembling a cactus covered in pink and yellow flowers. V is still working on her poorly drawn pomegranate.]

Monique: Favorite smell?

V: Real leather and ginger.

[V puts her crayon down. Done with her pomegranate blob.]

Monique: What do those smell like?

V: Ginger’s like a spice? A root. Has a fresh smell, kinda sharp. Leather smells like… (picking up her coffee and taking a sip to hide the blush on her face) Smells like your Uncle…

Monique: Uncle River does smell nice. But sometimes he gets stinky when he’s been outside working too long. Coffee, tea, or hot chocolate?!

V: Coffee, then tea. Don’t really like hot chocolate. Especially the synth-stuff. Has a weird aftertaste.

Monique: I love hot chocolate! Mom let me try some of her coffee once. I didn’t like it.

V: Maybe when you’re older.

Monique: Nah.

[Monique kicking her feet and reading the next question.]

Monique: Hmm, how much do you sleep?

V: 5 to 6 hours. Usually. On a good day.

[V takes a sip of her coffee.]

Monique: Mom says Dorian and I need 10 hours of sleep every night. She makes us go to bed early. She tells Randy to go to bed too, but he usually doesn't listen. (still kicking her feet) I wish I got to stay up late. You and Uncle River get to stay up late. I heard you both last night when I went to the bathroom.

[V spits her coffee back into her mug, face turning bright red.]

Monique: You okay? Why’d you spit out your coffee?

V: (flustered) No reason.

Monique: (puts her arms up in the air and shakes them around) Was it because you and Uncle River were wiggling last night? Mom says because your his girlfriend you both need alone time. She told me and Dorian not to knock when you’re visiting and the door to Uncle River’s room is closed. Mom also said he should think about getting his own trailer. (thoughtful) I don’t think I’d like that though, because then I’d have to walk out of the trailer for Uncle River to make me breakfast in the morning. Mom always burns the toast.

[V now looks like a tomato and avoids making eye contact with Monique, instead giving her coffee mug a pinched expression. Unfazed, Monique moves on to the next question.]

Monique: Which is your favorite, cats or dogs?

V: (clearing her throat) Cats. Have a cat named Nibbles.

Monique: Oh, can I meet your cat?!

V: Sure.

Monique: What color is your cat?

V: (still looking uncomfortably hot, albeit less red in the face, also looking very sadly at the backwash in her coffee) Hmm, pink. Ish. He doesn’t have any fur.

[Monique draws a pink cat and reads the next question off the screamsheet.]

Monique: Where would you like to go on a trip?

V: (looks out the window for a long moment) Some place without buildings. Less people.

Monique: The Badlands?

V: I was thinking further away.

Monique: Denmark?

V: Mm, maybe. I think they might even have trees there.

[Monique draws a tree on her notes before trying to read the next question.]

Monique: Favorite – Um…

V: Fictional character. Don’t have one.

Monique: Number of blankies you sleep with?

V: 2-3. I get cold when I sleep.

Monique: And the last one! A fun fact?

V: (thinking) Used to play the clarinet.

Dear OFMD,

I wasn’t sure who to address this to, at first. There are so many options, so many people instrumental in the creation of this show that means so much to me and so many others. David Jenkins, Taika Waititi, Vico Ortiz, Alex Sherman, and the rest of the producers, directors, writers, cast and crew. I did try to list out everyone, but it took up the whole first page. My social media follows exploded when I began watching.

The thing is, I’ve never quite been comfortable in my skin. I knew something was off about my gender as early as 8, possibly earlier, but eight is when I remember actually thinking that I wasn’t a girl for the first time.

I wasn’t a boy, either, but it was the eighties, and I didn’t know the term non-binary, or that gender was as much a brain thing as a body thing. So I shoved it down, along with the thought that the kids at my school should hurry up and learn the lessons already so we could go onto the next thing and that I hated wearing dresses, except when I loved it.

And then, I just . . . didn’t think about gender for a long time. Not when trans people were the butt of all the jokes in the movies in the nineties, not when trans stories, real trans stories started getting told in the aughts.

Someone gave me the word agender, once, when I was curious and asked what might describe someone who felt neither man nor woman, and never had, and I went with that. I still go with that, or enby, whichever I’m comfortable with in the moment. I was forty. Thirty-two years of not even knowing I was looking for that word, and I was.

And then a year or so later, someone talked me into watching Our Flag Means Death.

I write. I’ve published. When you send a story out, you never know what other people are going to think of it, what symbolism they’re going to find, how they’re going to interpret this thing or that thing. So I don’t know if you realized when you finished filming the first season and sent it for edits, or finished the second season and watched us foam at the mouth for it, how the fans were going to react.

There are a lot more of us out in the world that don’t feel quite right in whatever gender box we’ve been put in than anyone realizes, I think. And I think a lot of us gender-weirdos are fans of this show.

It’s not just Stede, and his love for fine things. It’s Ed, with his hidden silk, and his softly admitting to “maybe” liking “a fine fabric.” It’s not just Jim being outed, and everyone going right back to normal after they figure out that that’s what Jim wants. It’s not even just Wee John’s wonderful performance as Calypso.

It’s also Wee John sitting down to sew and saying he used to sew dresses with his mom. It’s calling Izzy the ship’s “new unicorn” and it’s also Izzy wearing make up. It’s everyone wearing flowers.

It’s Spanish Jackie having nineteen husbands, and maybe some wives.

It’s a meme of any of the characters that’s just a screenshot and the word “gender” written across it.

It’s the concept of “assigned knives at birth”

And it’s the community that this show created to let us feel free to explore all of this. We can bounce ideas off of each other, we can explore new identities, and you - the cast, the crew, the writers of this show - you have given us a safe space to do so.

I’ve been on the outskirts of a lot of fan spaces. I’ve never wanted to step into them because at their core, they seemed so toxic and gatekept. I’ve never felt that from the fans here (we’re not perfect, and there are a lot of very angry arguments over things that I hope you never see).

So yeah, this is my love letter to Our Flag Means Death, the show that helped me figure out, at forty-three, that my gender is, well, me. And it doesn’t have to fit anyone else’s label.

IT'S PRIDE MONTH, THOTS!! 🏳️‍🌈

So, to celebrate this month of love I want to give you some hcs with the RR-verse characters and how they celebrate:

First, let's start with everyone's fav gay couple, Solangelo! They definitely give eachother stupid gifts that the other loves. Like Will gave Nico one of those t-shirts with the gay skeleton (I want one so bad 😭) and Nico gave him those huge ass pride flags for the Apollo cabin (p.s the flag has a huge skelton head in the back that says "Solangelo 4ever", it was definitely not Nico's idea *wink, wink*)

Percabeth goes all out for pride month. Their dorm rooms and Sally's apartment are decorated with lil bi flags and they made rainbow cupcakes that have a diffrent flag on the inside for each of their friends. Also they go to an unholy amount of pride parades. And I think they got possessed one night and tried to dye their hair rainbow and let's just say it turned out like a unicorn puked on them and not in a good way.

I have some ideas of how do CHB and CJ celebrate this pride month and I wanted to put them here, so here we go: CHB is all rainbows during june, like i'm talking rainbow flags everywhere and the Demeter cabin partnered with the nymphs to make little rainbow and pride flags flower arrangements! The Aphrodite cabin makes pins with everyone's sexualty and gender identity (and they include the ally flag) and i feel like they will give whoever wants a make-up look based on their sexualty or gender identity. And if somebody is being homophobic ("WhY dOn'T wE hAve StRaiGht PriDe?") they're life will become a nightmare.

Camp Jupiter is a lil more traditional with festivities, like parades, flags everywhere and whoever likes wears a pin or a lil accessory with their flag(s). The parades are like traditional roman parties and if you've read about the roman parties of the past then you'll get an ideea of what happens. Let's just say everyone is passed out drunk by 9.

PIPER AND SHELL!!! I've been dying for an excuse to make a hc with them and I finally have it * excited noises * . They definitely go to at least a parade a day and they have lots of fun picking out outfits and make-up looks. And, since they're both native american, I think that they both buy eachother traditional clothing and jewlery that has the lesbian flag colors or the rainbow colors. Just like Percabeth, they too, dye their hair rainbow, only they actually know what they're doing.

I don't have anymore ideas rn, but if I do be sure that I will make a part two. Happy Pride!🏳️‍🌈❤️
