For years, May 1 was celebrated as International Workers' Day, also known as Labor Day in some countries, and often referred to as May Day. Here, in 1929, these five South Carolinan textile strike leaders marched in the Communist May Day Parade at Union Square. They carried signs, some of which pleaded for help, and others read, "Everyone on the picket line! Defy the Injunction!" May Day in New York passed quietly.

Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti died in the electric chair on August 23, 1927. They were accused of killing two men during an armed robbery.
The trial and subsequent appeals attracted enormous interest internationally, and generated vehement protests. Sacco and Vanzetti were considered to be victims of prejudice against immigrants, Italians, Catholics, and anarchists. John Dos Passos, Dorothy Parker, Edna St. Vincent Millay, George Bernard Shaw, and Albert Einstein were among those who wrote about the case or signed petitions.
The photo above shows a demonstration in Union Square on the day of the men's execution.

Couldn’t stay for the whole thing but photos from today’s Union Square protest for Rafah
-- @SpectacOptical, 17 Feb 2024
The protest, organized in part by Palestinian Youth Movement, Health Workers for Palestine, and Doctors Against Genocide, was held as part of a global day of action. PYM explained:
In light of the continued genocidal ethnic cleansing campaign against the Palestinian people in Gaza, the horrific attacks on Rafah, and the defunding of UNRWA, the three main demands of the global march are:
-Arms embargo on Israel
-Reinstate funding to UNRWA
-Lift the siege and end Israeli occupation
