bruce being purely physically abusive is a disservice to the years he spent instilling both deep loyalty and deep insecurities into his cbildren in a way that intentionally or not makes sure they’ll always have his critical voice in their heads, influencing their every decision and making them second guess themselves, and makes sure they’ll always drag themselves home when he calls. oh and also how much he loves them but never more than his mission, partly because of how deeply entangled they are in it. it’s quite rude to ignore all that in favor of a bruce that just hits his kids and very insensitive to assume that was all the harm he’s done to them when his abuse of them is either integral to their characters or their relationship with him.

There’s something about the batboys having kids.

Bruce had never expected to live long enough to have children, let alone see them have children of their own. He is hit with grief all over again as he holds his first grandchild (!), knowing deep in his heart that his parents never got to see him grow up, never got to see this family he created on his own. This tiny ball of life is in his hands, possible because he raised these boys into men able to become the fathers they’ve lost, and Bruce is suddenly eight years old again, on his knees as he makes a vow and it’s suddenly all worth it.

Gotham may never get better, but as long as there’s this: the possibility of new life being brought into the world and loved in a city of smog and unbalance, it’s worth it.

Because Bruce is a grandfather, his parents and Alfred are great-grandparents, and his children are parents.

These boys, brought up in dirt and pain, held together by a bird’s song and determination to make the world a better today and tomorrow for all who follow.

These boys, who’ve faced the horrors of loss and desperation, watching their bones be broken just to get up the next day and do it again and again because it makes the world safer.

These boys, his boys, held the weight of the world on their shoulders, suffered trial and tribulations, and seen the worst of the worst of the worst, and decided to do good. Decided that no matter how much harder this path was, it was worth it to see families thrive in the face of it all.

And then they did it themselves, creating families of their own in the world that trusted them to protect both young and old, and they felt safe enough to have that for themselves, too.

His boys. His stubborn, fearless, empathetic boys.

They’re older now, not as old as they could be but not as young as they should be, and Bruce is no longer the spry man he was. His age is catching up to him, as are the numerous fractures and spinal injuries he obtained, and he will have to retire from hero life (and he can do that now, something eight year old him thought was impossible to achieve).

But now, the passage of time is daunting, anc looking down at the bundle of joy (a chance, a start of something new-) in his hands, eyes locked on him and chubby fingers reaching for the chain on his neck with his parent’s wedding rings, and Bruce knows that it was worth it. He is old and tired, but his sons are alive and well, and there is now the possibility to grow old enough to know how his legacy extends into the future.

Bruce is a man of fists and Kevlar, forged in a pain long past, but now everything is different.

There is a new way forward, and it’s defined by love, not grief.

I read this awhile ago and I don't recall who but there was this scene where batman almost killed/ left someone to die in the snow because that person almost killed dick. and like isn't that crazy that he basically broke his rule for grayson?? not for Jason, who did actually die in such a gruesome fashion as a teen, but dick who just almost died ... like bruhhh Bruce has such interesting flexibility when it comes to even his own morality

I wouldn't say that he broke his one rule, though. At least he didn't in his own eyes. He didn't kill directly, he only allowed for the possibility of death-- injuring, and then not saving. I know it sounds like a flimsy excuse, but Bruce's one rule regarding killing is... highly subjective, and you're right about the dubious flexibility when it comes to his rules in general. He's kinda-sorta-killed people before (some of them even point blank, like shooting Darkseid in Final Crisis).

Also, I wouldn't really pit Bruce's reaction when Dick almost died against Bruce's reaction when Jason died, for two reasons. First, Bruce reacted quite similarly after Jason's death. He allowed for the possibility of Joker dying by not saving him from the helicopter crash, much like he allowed for the possibility of KGBeast dying:

Secondly, Jason was the first death of someone Bruce called family, that he experienced after his parents' loss. It was a brutal, horrible death and he blamed himself for it. It sent him down such a spiral that it required the intervention of Tim (who got himself into Bruce's whole mess and did so much to help, but man, at what cost; RIP the kid's mental health). And even though he's definitely stabilized by Tim and by Dick... Bruce is not ever the same, after Jason's death. His controlling tendencies, his anger, his tendency to distance himself, the guilt-- they all get worse. But then, because the guy's life is a cosmic tragedy, another Robin kinda dies (Stephanie) and another Robin kinda dies (Damian) and then another Robin kinda dies (Tim).

And I like Heroes in Crisis as much as the next person -- which is to say, not much -- but these panels do capture one of Bruce's most painful ongoing conflicts:

You crack at some point, after so much grief. Yes, everyone eventually comes back, but we as readers know that. Bruce has no guarantees. So... him being so brutal with KGBeast after he almost killed Dick makes sense to me personally, and it's not just a matter of "he cares more about Dick than he cared about Jason".

be forewarned i’m an insane person who has thought about this before plenty so this is going to be the worst thing you’ve ever read but anyways i was recently discussing (dickscussing? sorry.) this with claudia just earlier today. my overall conclusion is that i sincerely doubt he’s as small as he says; im not saying he’s massive or anything by any means but i think he’s probably perfectly average. and all the small dick jokes are potentially explained by one of the following (some overlap between the explanations): (1) self image issues or whatever that warps his perception, (2) he’s confident enough to be able to joke about it bc it’s just a fine size but he loves self-deprecating humour, or (3) an alternative put forward by claudia that his perceptions on what constitutes “small” are warped by those around him who are likely packing (ie patrick LMAO)

The different parts of Gotham War not lining up at all in terms of plot, character motivation and characterization is bad enough, but now that DC is suddenly trying to explain when other titles like Detective Comics and Batman and Robin are taking place in relation to Gotham War it gets even worse because now all of these storylines make so much less sense too.

I have decided for my personal entertainment that Clarisse de Cagliostro is related to Lupin III, and here's why.

-pulls out Arsène Lupin's Wikipedia page-

In the novel La Comtesse de Cagliostro, a young Arsène Lupin (at the time going by the name Raoul d'Andrésy) was courting Clarisse d'Etigues, a young lady of a well-to-do family, and trying to win her hand, despite her father's disapproval.

Throughout the course of the novel, Lupin meets and falls in love with Joséphine Balsamo, aka the Countess of Cagliostro, and abandons Clarisse in favour of her. To clarify, Joséphine is not actually countess of anything, she is (or claims to be) a descendant of Giuseppe Balsamo aka the Count of Cagliostro (who was also count of jack shit), a famous conman from the 18th century.

Shenanigans ensue, which I will not go into in details on, but oh my god I am insane about Raoul and Joséphine, I want to dissect them and study them under a microscope. It turns out Joséphine aka Cagliostro is evil as fuck, Raoul/Lupin realizes that and goes back to Clarisse (whom he had previously abandoned like an old sock, I fucking hate this guy), marries her, and a few years later has her kid.

Unfortunately Clarisse dies in childbirth, and Joséphine, who was still around and very very pissed at Lupin (and jealous as hell of Clarisse whom, may I mention, had never personally antagonized her in any way whatsoever, Joséphine is just fucking bonkers). Joséphine also kidnaps Lupin and Clarisse's son, Jean, and raises him as her own son. (I have not yet read the following novel The revenge of Cagliostro so I don't really know what Jean's deal is, I just know he's an antagonist).

The following is my headcanon, based on these events. In the universe of Lupin III, Joséphine Balsamo was actually countess of the small kingdom of Cagliostro (maybe Giuseppe was count, maybe he conned his way into becoming count, maybe he bought the land and built a fake kingdom with a fake history, who knows).

After the events of The revenge of Cagliostro, Jean settles down in the country of Cagliostro, gets married, has a child, and that child will later have a daughter of their own, who they name Clarisse, after their late grandmother. Clarisse de Cagliostro, of Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro fame, would thus be the great-grand-daughter of Arsène Lupin, making her Lupin III's cousin/niece/whatever you call this specific degree of separation.

I am choosing to make Clarisse de Cagliostro a great-granddaughter of Arsène Lupin, rather than a granddaughter, because Arsène Lupin was very young when the events I described unfolded: he is 20 years old when he meets Clarisse d'Etigues and the whole Cagliostro debacle happens, and 25 by the time Jean is born. I'm assuming he had Lupin II much later in his life. So Jean and Lupin II (half-brothers) would have a significant difference in age, and so Jean's hypothetical child (grandchild of Arsène Lupin, so of the same generation of Lupin III) would be much older than Lupin III. Clarisse de Cagliostro is younger than him, maybe around the same age if you stretch it, so she's have to be a great-grandchild.

Now I need to read The revenge of Cagliostro and study Arsène Lupin's wikipedia page in more detail to determine when exactly Lupin II was born and who his mother was. And also where Albert's family branched out, because the fact that he's called D'Andrésy should theoretically place him as a descendant of Arsène Lupin's mother but not of Arsène Lupin himself; but Jean was also going by that last name, so who fucking knows.
