I encountered this movie almost 30 years ago. The video store I was visiting at the time had the comic adaptation, and I can’t remember if they were selling it, or giving it away to get rid of the damned thing, but either way I snatched up the comic because of redhead because it looked interesting. And eventually saw the movie too.
As you can probably guess, it’s remarkably silly, trying to do a sort of virtual reality anthology horror movie. But it was a movie almost no one knew about, and has certain nostalgia for me for a certain time in my life. I’ve always felt a certain bit of ownership because of this.
I’ve wanted to share my thoughts on it for my site almost since I created it 13 years ago. I am genuinely excited to revisit this nostalgic moment I have not seen since first renting the VHS tape, and am glad I finally grabbed the movie.
The movie was written by, and stars, Vivian Schilling, which might be a name some people might recognise. In the back of the comic, there was an ad for an actual book she wrote. Called “Soultaker”.
Yes. THAT Soultaker. MST3K’s Soultaker. ALSO starring Schilling. I let out SUCH a noise when I recognised the movie’s title, AND that it genuinely was the same Soultaker, and I very nerdily shared the fact I was familiar with this movie’s creator before the episode aired.
