I recognise Walt Disney’s talent but it has always seemed to me hopelessly corrupted. Though in most of the pictures proceeding from [Disney] studios there are admirable or charming passages, the effect of all of them to me is disgusting. Some have given me nausea.
J.R.R. Tolkien
If Disney turned his stomach we can assume Tolkien would be turning in his grave at what Amazon Studios have done with 'Rings of Power'.
Tolkien's main objection to Disney - and something shared with C.S. Lewis - was how childish Disney treated fairy tales. For Tolkien fairy tales were serious business.
At the crux of his argument, which explores the nature of fantasy and the cultural role of fairy tales, is the same profound conviction that there is no such thing as writing “for children.” Tolkien insists that fairy tales aren’t inherently “for” children but that we, as adults, simply decided that they were, based on a series of misconceptions about both the nature of this literature and the nature of children. Tolkien deeply believe in language, myth, and Fairy, in that he recognised, they are deeply human things. Indeed, it is a natural right of humanity to produce fantasy.
And ye fail completely when we believe that Fairy is for children, Tolkien argued, noting that traditionally Fairy deals with the most difficult human problems, and children - understood as yet-to-be-formed humans - fall into the category of human, but they have no special hold or understanding of Fairy. Tolkien argued that the path to Fairy is neither the path to heaven nor to hell. It might be somewhat purgatorial, however, and certainly otherworldly. Fairy itself, far from being supernatural, is the most natural of worlds. Indeed, it is extraordinarily natural, as natural things live only as themselves. Rather Platonically, the tree is truly the tree (Treebeard), wine is truly wine, and bread (Lembas) is truly bread in Fairy. That is, there is little if any separation of the accidents of a thing from the essence of a thing. Those in fairy, though, through pride of beauty, often present themselves in disguise and as things they are not, thus befuddling the wanderer.
Words, definitions, and analyses, Tolkien warned, can offer only so much understanding of Fairy. Instead, one must not only travel to and through Fairy, but he must also recognise that fairy - like all mythology - is an expression of our deepest longings and fears.
A genuine fantasy, according to Tolkien, creates an immersive experience for the reader. In a successful fantasy, the author is a ‘sub-creator’: as Tolkien puts it, “He makes a Secondary World which your mind can enter. Inside it, what he relates is ‘true’: it accords with the laws of that world. You therefore believe it, while you are, as it were, inside.”
He goes on to argue that this sort of fantasy has three essential functions: recovery, escape, and consolation. Using the metaphor of a dirty, smudged window - whose film of grime obscures what we see through it - he says that we need “to clean our windows; so that the things seen clearly may be freed from the drab blur of triteness or familiarity - from possessiveness.” Fantasy helps us with this recovery of clear vision. He distinguishes the literary escape offered by good fantasy from the negative quality of escapism. And he explains the idea of consolation by coining the word eucatastrophe. It is formed of ‘eu,’ meaning good, attached to ‘catastrophe, and it means “the good catastrophe”: the unexpected happy ending, which gives us a profound taste of joy. We see it in The Lord of the Rings with the rescue of Frodo and Sam, after the destruction of the Ring, when they are sure that all is lost; we see it even more fully in the final chapters and indeed the final pages of the tale.

I wanna talk about Elijah Walton and what he and his brother represent in the story because I think it's really interesting.
It's really interesting how Elijah and Don are pretty much an exact mirror of Walt and Roy Disney, even down to their roles in the company. Walt and Elijah were the creatives and Roy and Don were the finance and when Walt died, Roy took over. Atleast this is according to a quick google search. (Though I dont really like comparing Elijah to Walt to a tee just because he was a raging Racist, Sexist and overall bigot while also exploiting his workers and Elijah is propped up to very much be a good person by the narrative, so I'd like to think Elijah wasnt those things atleast for the purpose of this analysis)
Elijah represents those who want to tell stories. The artists, writers, creators etc. He represents the wonder and joy of creating things for others to see and the passion behind it. He is what Walt Disney presented himself as, a fatherly and whimsical story teller sharing art with the masses. His demeanor is warm, inviting and friendly.
Meanwhile Don represents the capital. He looks to what will be profitable, what will make the shareholders happy. He doesnt care about the creativity, evident by the fact their films take a bit of a back seat to American Arcadia and they are willing to let Kovacs go when he is no longer helpful to them. Hes cold, stilted and professional.
In equilibrium Creativity and Money can work, atleast in the society we live in now it does. You need money to create, and creativity makes money, so both are incredibly important. You cant focus too heavily on the creativity otherwise things get too ambitious, people get overworked, it will take too long to finish and you cant fund it. You cant focus too heavily on the money otherwise you will cut corners, exploit people and overall create uncreative pandering art in an effort to make as much money as possible. They need to work together.
And we see them working together with the rise of Walton Pictures.
But what we also see in AA and in our real lives too is the money taking over. We see it in the Arcadians, people who's lives are recorded without their consent, who are brainwashed to remain inside the dome to keep on making money for the company and when they are no longer useful they are basically thrown out. People who are used basically as toys to make Walton more money and for our entertainment. We see it in Disney now, in their under payed Writers, Actors and Animators who have to strike to be payed livable wages. You see it in the sweatshop workers making their merchandise, the exploitation of other people's cultures (see, Disney trying to Trademark fucking Dia De Los Muertos or just the movie Pocahontas) and much more.
The fact that Elijah's death was what caused the turning point for the company to go down into this hellish capitalistic spiral is very poignant. It shows that when Creativity dies and Money takes over, all you are left with greed and suffering.

I've recently watched the new Disney short Once Upon a Studio. And, while I loved it, I can't help but want a little...more? The concept presented here has so much potential beyond just 10 minutes of Mickey trying to get all the Disney characters together for a group picture. Like, I wouldn't more shorts, a tv show, hell even a full movie with the premise of Disney characters coming to life and living inside the Disney studio. So, if you're listening Disney, more of this please. Or maybe not if you'll oversaturate it.
Also, I'm man enough to admit that the ending where all the Disney characters sing When You Wish Upon a Star got me a little teary-eyed. Mickey paying respects to Walt Disney was also a nice touch.
And finally, Wreck-it Ralph calling Mickey "Garfield" is the type of humor I live for.

Chip ‘N Dale Rescue Rangers Gets Physical Vynil Album From Disney Music Emporium and Walt Disney Records
Some times, some crimes and soundtracks go slipping through the cracks.....
Disney Music Emporium and Walt Disney Records has revealed that a special vinyl edition of the official soundtrack to the Primetime Emmy Award winning film, Chip ‘N’ Dale Rescue Rangers is now available.
Enjoy The Toons Records in partnership with Walt Disney Records, Disney Music Emporium and Enjoy The Ride Records, is proud to present the premiere vinyl release for Walt Disney Pictures and Mandeville Films "Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers". A comeback 30 years in the making, Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers catches up with the former Disney Afternoon television stars in modern-day Los Angeles. In this hybrid live-action/CGI animated action-comedy film, Chip and Dale are living amongst cartoons and humans in modern-day Los Angeles, but their lives are quite different now. It has been decades since their successful television series was canceled, and Chip voiced of John Mulaney (Sony Pictures Animation "Spiderman Across The Spiderverse" franchise, Dreamworks Animation "Puss In Boots: The Last Wish") has succumbed to a life of suburban domesticity as an insurance salesman. Dale voiced by Andy Samberg (Sony Pictures Animation "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse"), meanwhile, has had CGI surgery and works the nostalgia convention circuit, desperate to relive his glory days. When a former castmate mysteriously disappears, Chip and Dale must repair their broken friendship and take on their Rescue Rangers detective personas once again to save their friend.
Featuring the fantastic score by Brian Tyler (Illumination "The Super Mario Bros Movie"), featuring "Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers Theme" Performed by Post Malone , and "Disney Afternoon Theme / Whale Rap Performed" by Andy Samberg, John Mulaney & Nathaniel Motte. Notably, the album is available on Chip N' Dale Stripe colored vinyl.
Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers (2022) is one the attempts from Disney to bring the beloved The Disney Afternoon characters and shows to a new generation of fans, other projects include DuckTales (2017) with 3 seasons now streaming, Darkwing Duck and TaleSpin with upcoming animated reboots by Point Grey Pictures and Disney Television Animation and a live action Gargoyles reboot from Atomic Monster and Blumhouse Television set for Disney+.

Resumo do Filme (Spoilers, duh):

Eras of a Franchise:
Tumblr media
The Origins Era (1923 - 1942)
The studio is founded and creates theatrical shorts (series like Alice Comedies, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, and Mickey Mouse) until pioneering the fully-animated theatrical movie.
Movies released in this era: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Pinocchio Fantasia Dumbo Bambi
The Wartime Era (1943 - 1949)
Funds are diverted to aiding the country during World War II, so the movies created during this era are just normal animated shorts packaged together to fill at least an hour runtime.
Movies released in this era: Saludos Amigos The Three Caballeros Make Mine Music Fun and Fancy Free Melody Time The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad
The Rebound Era (1950 - 1969)
Traditional animated movies make a comeback, to varying degrees of financial success but all to high degrees of quality. The era ends shortly after Walt Disney's death in 1966.
Movies released in this era: Cinderella Alice in Wonderland Peter Pan Lady and the Tramp Sleeping Beauty 101 Dalmatians The Sword in the Stone The Jungle Book
The Declining Era (1970 - 1988)
Without Walt, the company's leadership becomes aimless, and Disney becomes pigeonholed as a frivolous studio that makes funny cartoon animal movies for children. After reaching a nadir in 1985, things gradually begin to shape up due to a skilled new leadership quadrate.
Movies released in this era: The Aristocats Robin Hood The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh The Rescuers The Fox and the Hound The Black Cauldron The Great Mouse Detective Oliver and Company
The Renaissance Era (1989 - 1999)
A decade in which Disney movies were arguably bigger than ever, being critical and/or box office smashes, and the majority of the movies being musicals. Tragically, the leadership quadrate was broken halfway through, which ultimately brought about the era's end.
Movies released in this era: The Little Mermaid The Rescuers Down Under Beauty and the Beast Aladdin The Nightmare Before Christmas* The Lion King Pocahontas The Hunchback of Notre Dame Hercules Mulan Tarzan
The Experimental Era (2000 - 2007/2008)
A time when Disney moved away from their musical formula and put out radically different films. Unfortunately, the studio was often undermined by corporate decisions, now almost exclusively managed by Michael Eisner, leading to the majority of these movies flopping.
Movies released in this era: Fantasia 2000 Dinosaur The Emperor's New Groove Atlantis the Lost Empire Lilo & Stitch Treasure Planet Brother Bear Home on the Range Chicken Little Meet the Robinsons
The Revival Era (2008/2009 - 2019)
With Eisner gone and his replacement Bob Iger bringing aboard Pixar's John Lasseter as the head of the studio, Disney begins putting out high-quality movies that are critically and/or financially successful at a regular pace, including its biggest hits ever Frozen and Frozen II.
Movies released in this era: Bolt** The Princess and the Frog Tangled Winnie the Pooh Wreck-It Ralph Frozen Big Hero 6 Zootopia Moana Ralph Breaks the Internet Frozen II
The Current Era (2020 - Present)
Disney is experiencing some....technical difficulties right now. Repair time unknown.
Movies released in this era: Raya and the Last Dragon Encanto Strange World Wish
*The Nightmare Before Christmas was put in development to be part of the Disney Animated Canon. However, studio leadership ultimately backed out of this plan and had it released via Touchstone Pictures instead since its stop-motion animation was deemed too different from the other movies' hand-drawn animation. Which is funny since otherwise it being a musical makes it fits more than The Rescuers Down Under, more of a Declining Era holdover, does.
**Debate persists whether Bolt should be considered the end of the Experimental Era or the start of the Revival Era, as while it was the first movie overseen by John Lasseter and was a critical and box office success, it also lacked the staying power within the company brand (sequels, spin-offs, merchandise, etc.) that The Princess and the Frog and onward did.

Got to see "Wish" yesterday.
I had no real strong feelings going into this celebration of a film going in. I just knew that it all was a culmination of Disney's history with fairy tales. And watching it... admittedly gave me more mixed emotions than I hoped.
Tumblr media
Starting on a positive note: the visual presentation. The psuedo-watercolor look to the backgrounds really makes them pop with pretty detail, and while it would've been preferable to also have the characters hand-drawn, the cinematic screen really shows how many 2D sensibilities are actually in their linework and movements. Color work can really stand out in places too. It's not the most storybook-like animation nor most effective blend I've seen, but it feels about right for how I'd expect Disney to handle that.
Tumblr media
The plot is, by design, very tropey - pretty much going off the checklist of what is expected from Disney fairy tales - and while it wasn't the most interesting thing in the world, I could certainly wrap my head around the thought process. However, I do have to criticize parts of the writing, in that it often felt like the dialogue was just over-explaining the plot details to the audience. It felt like there was little room for subtle depth when there easily could've been.
Tumblr media
Similarly, characters are standard but likable. Asha - while not a new character type for WDAS - is charming and rootable. Her Seven Dwarves-referenced friends do a good job at getting involved in the action and all have their moments to shine. Star is cute, Valentino... eh, I can give or take. And King Magnifico is, of course, a villain you love to hate - starting out with the illusion of generosity, only for his true colors to become more exposed over time. He's not going to make many top 10 lists, but his animation and Chris Pine hamming it up pays off.
Tumblr media
The songs - not the best, to be honest. They're catchy enough, are generally brought to life well, and many may well find a standout (my fave was "This is The Thanks I Get"). But you're not going to find a new "We Don't Talk About Bruno" here. I think part of the issue is that the approach to them felt fairly modern-leaning, which I think was a mistake when this is meant to be presented as a classical fairy tale. Though I will say, the actual orchestral score fares notably better on this front.
Tumblr media
I think the big saving grace of the film, besides the presentation, is how thematically tied it is to it being Disney's centennial. Not just in how many easter eggs get littered in, but also how the whole heart of the picture is about following your dreams and to not let a higher authority take them away from you. Sounds simplistic, but they litter in enough nuance for it to feel relatable. And apart from it being something people really need to hear sometimes, especially in our late-stage capitalism world; recall too how Walt Disney himself first built this empire by taking chances on utilizing animation that no one else in Hollywood would. There's even precedent to this with a few bits seen in the film, but I'm not going to give that away here. It hits pretty hard, and serves well as a metaphor on its own merits.
Tumblr media
I'd say if you weren't intrigued by the trailers, you're not going to be swayed by the film. But the kids and others wanting something to lift their spirits are unquestionably going to eat this up, as it really is the exact kind of tale that made Disney the titan we both love and hate today.

Yep! You read the title correctly! It is Disney’s 100th birthday, it’s 100th anniversary; 100 years AKA a full century! Happy special centenary Walt Disney Entertainment Company + Studios and Pictures too! Disney is a very impactful, influential and inspiring yet important company that has created many communities throughout generations as well as create many pieces of media from films and cinematography in both live-action and animation to pieces of shorts, games, media and much more! Many dreams have came true, many forms of inspiration and creativity have been achieved and worked to the fullest potential to give it the wonderful magic and beauty that many Disney movies tend to have in common with! As a company tho, Disney has done rather questionable and controversial both in past and present but not everything is perfect. I understand that. (Great job on that to the people who worked extremely hard on this!) And I’d like to say thank you to Walt Disney, Roy Disney, and much, much more for not only Mickey Mouse representing the Disney Company and Community but to how Disney came to be as one beautiful story full of dreams, lessons, enthusiasm, inspiration, joy, love, wonder and magic throughout the entire world to those young currently and young at heart filled with memories and nostalgia and honestly, you done well Disney and everyone else, you done amazing through the century.
Happy 100th Anniversary full of Wonder, Stories, Dream, Magic and Memories Disney entirely! Thank you for the many glamorous and sparkling times! We love you Disney despite your historical background and flaws!

Fifteen Days of Disney Magic - Number 5
Welcome to Fifteen Days of Disney Magic! In honor of the company’s 100th Anniversary, I am counting down my Top 15 Favorite Movies from Walt Disney Animation Studios! We’ve now entered the Top 5 of the Countdown! Today’s entry is the ONLY Modern Era Movie on the List. Number 5 is…Zootopia.
Tumblr media
Right about now, I imagine a lot of people reading are asking themselves the same question: “Why Zootopia?” Out of all the modern Disney films I could choose – from Tangled to Encanto to beyond – why does “Zootopia” not only end up being the only modern era movie in my Top 15, but actually a film that makes it into my Top 5, even trumping “Alice in Wonderland”? My honest answer is…I actually don’t really know. I guess the best way I can put it is…it’s just the right film for me. “Zootopia,” in essence, is Disney’s version of a neo-noir mystery. And it actually IS a legitimate and decently-told mystery! It’s not as dark as actual neo-noir films, obviously, but the style of the story, the way the characters act and interact, and even the way things are shot and lit (in animation) feels like a sort of child-friendly version of movies like “Chinatown” or even older pictures such as “The Big Sleep” (which apparently was a direct influence on the movie). I’ve always been a fan of film noir, and especially the crime and mystery genre of the medium, so seeing a film that had that kind of quality, while still being just as bright and colorful as most Disney movies, and with a grand sense of humor about itself, was very interesting. I also love the cast of this movie; both Nick Wilde and Judy Hopps are among my favorite protagonists in any Disney feature to date. Judy actually might be my choice for my favorite Disney heroine, in particular, and Nick is easily in my Top 5 for the male leads. They’re both fun and flawed in their own ways, and the manners in which they bounce off one another, and the development of their relationship over the course of the story, are really a treat to behold. I also have to give credit to their voice actors. Despite being well-acquainted with at least some of the works from both performers – Jason Bateman for Nick, and Ginnifer Goodwin for Judy – I feel they both just totally disappear into their respective characters. With celebrity voice artists, especially in a lot of more modern films, I think the success rate of their work is sort of 50/50. When it’s not managed well, sometimes the person behind the mic becomes more important than the actual character being presented, and you can sort of feel the distance between the actor and the microphone. With Bateman and Goodwin, I never got that feeling: they’re just right there, in the role! There are no actors, only Nick and Judy, and that really is a big part of what makes them so great to me.
The rest of the cast is pretty good, too. Even some of the most minor characters or brief supporting roles can have a big impact. It’s telling that, when Disney+ announced a new Zootopia spin-off show, instead of focusing on Nick and Judy’s new adventures, the series was a bunch of shorts that focused on the supporting players and their own lives and interests. In the film, these were characters you wanted to learn more about, and the show did exactly that. The themes and messages of the film are fascinating: I often hear people say that there’s stuff really hammered in within this movie, but I actually don’t think that’s the case at all. To me, the film gives a message that is both timely and timeless, but does so in a way that is contemporary and fresh, and does so with a story that you can relate to a lot of different problems in the world and history. You can read it a few different ways, and every way is important. I’m not going to act like this is the absolute best of all the modern era Disney films; to be honest, I don’t know which movie has that distinction. And while Zootopia definitely has a major following, I don’t know if it’s quite as “big” as films like “Frozen” or “Wreck-It Ralph.” But for me, this is easily my favorite Disney movie to have come out within the past couple decades at least, and definitely worthy of a spot in my Top 5. I don’t know how many other people would share this sentiment, but it’s one I’m holding onto regardless. The end draws ever nearer. The countdown continues tomorrow with my 4th Favorite Disney Movie! HINT: It Should Ring a Bell.

1, 2, 7, 8, 12 for Cinderella (1950 version)
1. Why do you like or dislike this character? I like her because she's such a well-rounded and likable heroine. She's kind, gentle, optimistic, and full of dreams, but she's down-to-earth, practical, and determined as well, with righteous anger about her situation and willingness to seize her chances for escape. She's humble yet dignified, innocent yet clever, witty, and playful, sometimes frightened or despairing yet never defeated for long, and she uses the few resources she has to care for creatures who are more vulnerable than she is (i.e. feeding, clothing, and protecting the mice and birds). She's a good role model, but she's fallible too, as when Lucifer the cat wears her patience thin, or when she carelessly hums the music from the ball in Lady Tremaine's presence. To this day she's a fresh, unique portrayal of Cinderella, and she's easily the most fleshed-out and human of the three Walt-era Disney Princesses.
2. Favorite canon thing about this character? How dimensional and endearingly human she is: see above.
7. What's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you like? When they see her as she is, not as the pathetic, insipid, anti-feminist waif that pop culture stereotypes her (and all versions of Cinderella) as being.
8. What's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you despise? When they ignore her entire personality and reduce her to an insipid, helpless damsel in distress.
Although another pet peeve of mine is when they conflate her with the 2015 live action Cinderella, who's really a very different character in some ways. 2015 Ella is focused more on enduring and finding the good in the present moment, as part of her resolve to always "have courage and be kind," while 1950 Cinderella is more frank about how bad things are, and more focused on hope, dreams, and determination that someday her life will be better.
12. What's a headcanon you have for this character? Since "Cinderella" is her real name in this version of the tale, not an insulting nickname, I'll imagine that her mother died giving birth to her, and so her father named her Cinderella because cinders and ashes are a symbol of mourning. (Yes, I know there's at least one picture book that shows her remembering her mother, but I only take the original film as canon, and the original film's only mention of her mother is the fact that the pink dress once belonged to her.)

@crossover-enthusiast ALRIGHT I SHALL NOW PRESENT MY STUFFED ANIMALS EXEPT IT’S GONNA BE IN A POST THAT I’M GONNA HAVE TO KEEP ADDING ONTO BECAUSE I REALLY SHOULD HAVE DONE THIS FOR ALL OF THEM LONG AGO
Ok so first up is Slushy! She’s not very photogenic but I tried
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I STARTED THIS BASICALLY FIRST THING IN THE MORNING AND IT’S TAKEN ME UNTIL ALMOST MIDNIGHT TO ACTUALLY POST
Slushy is a toy called a fursian, which are super similar to Beanie Boos except they all have the same build no matter what animal they are (these little chibi things with long fluffy tails). Slushy here is a snow leopard and has essentially become my mascot
I often describe her as the Mickey to my Walt Disney. She’s me but not, if that makes sense. She’s a bit more grounded in reality and definitely has better morals than I do, but also has the capacity to be a lot more chaotic than me. Oh yeah, she can also draw
I got her right when I was doing my first animation M.A.P. part, which was about July 27-ish of 2020, because I was at a store, saw a whole rack of fursians, and was like “these… these are the most perfect creatures I’ve waited so long to see…” and I just had to have one. Good for sitting on shoulders. I wanted one that would actually make sense to have a long tail, but my sister grabbed the only animal that I thought would, so in a split second of chance, I grabbed the other most appealing one I saw (I later found out snow leopards actually DO have super long tails!). I just realized it’s been 4 freaking years; good on ye, mate.
My profile picture is just a stock image of a Slushy and MAN I need to draw a real one at some point
