Last movie / TV show: skip to loafer! i was screaming with muwi the entire time bc the story was so sweet and healing and everyone is so sympathetic and cute and we kept being like AAAAAAAAAA I LOVE WOMEN FRIENDSHIPS SO MUCHHHHHH

Spicy/savoury/sweet: sweet! if i could choose a combo, i like savoury-sweet. i like spice but only if i like the flavour! i'm not keen on the actual pain sensation of spice!!

Last thing I googled: hummmm i don't remember... i think a marinade recipe i made yesterday night? i made a korean base marinade for some lamb chops!! i cooked them today and invited my sister to eat with us, it was rlly yummy!

Relationship status: single! waves my aroace flag!!! i'm curious about how it feels to be in a relationship but it's not smth i try to actualize LOL i'm content w reading my shoujosei man-ga/hwa/huas <33

Current obsession: idk if i could call them obsessions yet but right now i'm really invested in sousou no frieren (anime only, havent caught up to the manga), skip to loafer (same there), and i'm looking for more wholesome healing stories. although now that i'm going through my reading lists for stories i've dropped, i'm laughing at them fjaksfjkasfj

(i promise this one has proper context bc i usually like pacifist mcs just bc i like politics and connection seeking to be based on a foundation of empathy and kindness. but this one was just so stupid and just a way to establish how good the mc was to the point that i couldn't get immersed in the story bc it was that nonsensical and i wanted to die)

i'm typically fine w mary sues / jane(?) FLs and i even tend to be biased for them just bc there's a lot of misogyny about the subject matter, so i normally don't bat an eye unless it's a writing choice i find unsuitable / doesn't fulfill the potential it could've achieved with an interesting plot.

(btw the context is that the first screenie which this rant also applies to was when some guy caught the baddies and the FL is like "No let's reward them for trying to kill us. they're just misunderstood!! i bet if we try really hard we can all get along!!")

but! i only really like it when it actually does something useful, like thematically or symbolically. like tohru's innate goodness for furuba inline with the sohma's family curse and mitsumi's unending positivity and earnestness that helps the people around her heal from emotional wounds. not that they're mary sues in any way, but since people understand mary sues as "female protagonists who can do no wrong and will be liked no matter what" (even thought their psychology and personality is just genuinely likeable), i think it makes my point clear. there's a way to write a character who is Good and Kind without cheapening them to a naivete that at best, makes the mc pitiable, or worst, is treated like the mc's totally unique worldview of "lets be nice to people and never hurt anyone ever :)" is the end all be all of the story and the solution to the plot. kindness and empathy is a coiled spring that projects you forward, a motivator. it's how you guide your hand and where it goes, not that the hand is never raised. i don't agree that cowardice towards change and the potential promise of conflict is any kind of wisdom >:T plus it kinda puts the shame to the idea of kindness as a legitimate basis for political strategy, and that leads to some set up for a lot of zero sum games i don't care for in this specific story. there is a good story where each character is trying to one up each other politically, psychologically, at all times, but this is not that story and so the tone feels very off kilter.

but yeah!! sometimes a character is just OP and the story is not even having fun with it (aka its not satire or irony), which makes me think they want to take it seriously. and my serious thoughts was that it sucked.

(i just realised this also applies to the first screenie LMFAO it just loops back huh!!)

not gonna comment about the others bc i think they speak for themselves <33 but also the first one of these three is fucked up in the sense that i dont even get where they're going w the story. its a revenge story and the FL uses the ML from childhood to achieve her revenge, but then suddenly when he's an adult she has Feelings for Him and now im like.... okay....? belief no longer suspended. beliefs are like those garter straps that snapped. my socks are like my beliefs. fallen to my feet. they are no longer suspended.

sorry that got off track </33 i enjoy looking into why i dont like things, im in this stage of life where i realise i actually have specific ass tastes!! i always have, but i just realised it very recently a few years back fjskfjskjf

Should You Watch Skip & Loafer?

(English title: Skip & Loafer)

(Japanese title: Skip to Loafer - or Sukippu to Roofaa)

A Brief Summary

Mitsumi comes from a super small town, but she has big ambitions. Her plan is to attend school in the big city (Tokyo) in order to become a government official and make things better for her very small hometown. She’s so dedicated to this goal, that she doesn’t realize other people may not have the same kind of mindset and would rather loaf around. Enter Sousuke, a fellow classmate she meets after getting lost on the way to her first day of school in the maze that is Tokyo. Sousuke likes to take things at his own pace (slow) and not get himself deeply involved into anything or with anyone.

The pair are almost complete opposites, but they become friends anyhow and learn a bit more about the world and themselves throughout their freshman year in high school.

So, should you watch the anime?

Definitely yes, unless you absolutely can’t stand slice of life anime.

I looked forward to watching Skip & Loafer every week as it gave me a warm, squishy dose of wholesome goodness. It’s just so gosh-dang nice. My heart could barely handle the genuine feelings in some episodes.

Skip & Loafer is also a funny show, but funny in a friendly way. It’s not slapstick violence, but instead shows off how goofy things can be when high school kids interact with each other. But to be fair, the show has its serious moments too. High school isn’t all laughs, after all. Each of the characters have darker bits to them, as do all people. The way the show explores how the characters grow is… well, I used the word before, but honestly, “wholesome” is the best description for Skip & Loafer. Because even when some darker moments happen, things end up okay in the end.

While I mentioned this is slice-of-life-esque, there is a hint of romance throughout as well. But romance isn’t the main focus, it’s just part of the high school experience - which is what the focus of Skip & Loafer really is. Kids figuring themselves out a little at a time with some bonus shenanigans thrown in. You know, your classic school festivals and sports day fun. Throw in the whole “country hick in the big city discovering new things” vibe, and you’ve got yourself this anime.

And I mean that in the best way. Though my high school days are long past, so maybe my opinion is slightly tinted by nostalgia’s rosy color.

The art design and animation add to the wholesome feeling the show gives off. The character design is pretty simple, but they do a lot with faces and expressions. I love some of the derpy faces Mitsumi makes, and the little blush marks characters get when embarrassed or nervous are very cute. While I don’t know much about fashion, the clothes Mitsumi and her friends wear seem fairly realistic to what you could find normal Japanese teenagers wearing today. I do enjoy extreme and weird outfits, but in a slice-of-life style anime, regular fashion is a nice touch.

The plot is mostly about the day to day life and ambitions of high school students. We learn a bit about the group and how their childhood experiences (such as being a child star, being made fun of, etc) have shaped them, but also how they can still keep changing. Like I said, freaking wholesome.

Besides Mitsumi and Sousuke’s developing friendship, you’ll get to peek into the lives of some of Mitsumi’s other friends and family, such as:

A tsundere classmate who wants Sousuke’s attention and has the same bangs as Misato from Evangelion (Mika).

A blonde bombshell super-model type that wants friends who don’t care about her looks or fame (Yuzuki).

A classic nerdy introverted girl with twin braids and glasses who thinks good looking people are jerks (Makoto).

The ultimate bestie from back home that is the most supportive person on earth (Fumi).

The epitome of OCD and the type who would probably plan out every bathroom break on a trip (Takamine).

A passionately dedicated drama club student who will do anything for the sake of their art (Kanechika).

And a cool aunt with a bit of an adam’s apple that helps out with good fashion tips and a place for Mitsumi to stay in Tokyo (Nao).

**Disclaimer here that I am not trans, but in my opinion, I think Nao’s inclusion in the story was very tastefully done. Pronouns were used correctly, and no big deal was ever made of Mitsumi’s aunt formerly being an uncle. She mentions it to her friends once when they are going to stay they night in case it bothers anyone. But it doesn’t. And I really like that.**

Plus even more friends and family! There are quite a few minor characters that still make a big impact, and some I’d like to know more about. As Skip & Loafer was a manga before it was an anime, I assume we do get more, so yay! But even if you just watch the anime only, the story ends at a good stopping point.

Where does it rate on my personal scale?

S: I will buy it at full price (unless it’s released by Aniplex USA, because fuck their pricing).

->A: I will buy it on sale sometime down the line.

B: I had fun watching it, but don’t need to own it.

C: It’s not my cup of tea, but wasn’t awful.

D: Dropped it.

X: Finished it out of spite, but did not enjoy it.

Skip & Loafer ranks at a solid A. It was one of my favorite shows of the season and I would like to have the chance to watch it again even if streaming services die. I’m also tempted to check out the manga to get more of my wholesome fix.

Spring 2023 Anime Wrapup

Original Post:

This sure was a season. I finished 14 full-length series, plus some OVAs and carryovers. Undisputed show of the season Oshi no Ko and underrated hit Dead Mount Death Play lead the pack, but there's a range of other content between hate-watchable and actually good as well.

New Stuff:

Oshi no Ko (My Star) - Holy shit. I don't want to say much to avoid spoilers, but it was a 10/10 candidate from episode one and still might end up there on rewatch. For now 9/10, you MUST watch this. There will be a post forthcoming when I process it for a while.

Isekai de Cheat Skill wo Te ni Shita Ore wa, Genjitsu Sekai wo mo Musou Suru: Level Up wa Jinsei wo Kaeta (I Got a Cheat Skill in Another World and Became Unrivaled in The Real World, Too) - They put the entire power fantasy in the title for your convenience. It's not a great message that all you need to do to become popular is inherit a bunch of money and literally magically change your entire body, but here we are. The power fantasy is truly stratospheric - for example, he accidentally seduces a model and is proposed to by a princess in the space of one episode. The "animation" (or lack thereof) doesn't give the at best mediocre plot the support it needs, alas. A very generous 6/10.

Jigokuraku (Hell's Paradise) - Samurai Suicide Squad with a hearty helping of EDGE and a surprising amount of heart. The action was good, even though it sometimes felt like they ran out of time to make things truly excellent. 8/10.

Kanojo ga Koushaku-tei ni Itta Riyuu (The Reason Why Raeliana Ended up at the Duke's Mansion) - Another villainess anime, this time with the twist being that she becomes a villainess on purpose in order to save her own life. Most of the time the plot foreknowledge twist was used to undermine typical shoujo tropes rather than heighten them. Between that and the nothing ending, I found it oddly muted. 7/10.

Kimi wa Houkago Insomnia (Insomniacs After School) - I didn't finish this yet, because I don't think I'm ready for the emotional punches it's setting up. Not dropped, just not done.

Skip to Loafer (Skip and Loafer) - A country-girl-in-the-big-city shoujo story, in which our protagonist good-natures her way through a whole stable of stock high school antagonists. I like that given only twelve episodes to work with they didn't speedrun to parts where relationships happen, and instead let the story take its time. This is the first time since Hyouka I've really liked something with this sort of sedate pace. Looking forward to more! 8/10.

Tengoku Daimakyou (Heavenly Delusion) - A trip through the post-apocalypse featuring spooky monsters, bioethics failures, and a mix of hope and despair at how people face life after the end. Worth a watch, but be aware there's some extreme content. 8/10

Yamada-kun to Lv999 no Koi wo Suru (Loving Yamada at Lv999) - Shoujo for gamers! Unlike Raeliana above this shoujo with a twist did it for me. For personal reasons I appreciated the respect paid to online relationships. Convincing characters and relationships plus distinct and consistent art make this a very honorable 8/10.

Otonari ni Ginga (A Galaxy Next Door) - A guy touches an alien princess funny and they're married now. Yes, another one. This time, she's his manga assistant. Very light and fluffy, despite the subtheme of family alienation. 7/10, though at the high end for myself.

Dead Mount Death Play - Reverse Isekai! With a name like that you'd expect some serious edge, and there is some. Surprisingly though the themes are very wholesome. This was the biggest surprise of the season. I didn't watch it in the first round of shows, but when I looked at it out of curiosity it blew me away. 9/10, you should really watch this.

Tonikaku Kawaii - This is a sequel, but I hadn't watched the previous season, so it's new to me. I added it later in the season mostly out of curiosity. It turned out to be another entry in the impossibly perfect significant other microgenre, like The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten. As with Angel Next Door, the point is that you should be an actual good person. This time it's about the rewards of getting married as soon as possible, and here are step-by-step instructions. There's a subtle-but-not-subtle supernatural undercurrent that becomes increasingly obvious in season 2, as well. 7/10.

Sequels:

Birdie Wing: Golf Girls' Story Season 2 - What can you say about a show that introduces multiple dangerous forbidden techniques in the middle of a tournament arc... of golf? Anyway here's lesbians doing more wacky special moves. If you're into weird sports anime you're sure to be into this. 8/10.

Dr. Stone: New World - There was a lot more yadda yadda this time, so it fell a bit flat. The less they show Senku's work coming up with things the more they feel like instant win buttons instead of things they worked for. I had hoped the cast size constraint in the second half of the season would have let them go back to spending time on inventions, but alas no. 7/10.

Kimetsu no Yaiba: Katanakaji no Sato-hen (Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Swordsmith Village Arc) - Yep, it was more Demon Slayer. I'm pleased that Demon Slayer has mostly maintained its quality, in contrast with My Hero Academia which fell off a bit in the middle there. 8/10.

Kidou Senshi Gundam: Suisei no Majo Season 2 (Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury Season 2) - The robots (and lesbians) are cool, but I don't see how it's possible to miss the "war (and unfettered capitalism) is bad" message. It's also a new take on Revolutionary Girl Utena, which I've been meaning to re-watch and write about for some time. No excuse now, I suppose. 8/10.

Uma Musume: Pretty Derby - Road to the Top - I forgot to put this on the first list because it's a four episode ONA that hadn't started airing yet. As one of the weird sports anime I actually enjoy, of course I was up for even just a small arc of it. 8/10.

Carryovers:

Kubo-san wa Mob wo Yurusanai (Kubo Won't Let Me Be Invisible) - Finally a bulli anime I can enjoy, thanks to it not actually being bulli for very long. In the end this was a sort of nothing-in-particular show, falling somewhere in the fuzzy area around impossibly perfect SO and teasing anime. As expected it's almost all frosting and no cake, but I did enjoy my time with it. 7/10.

Itai no wa Iya nano de Bougyoryoku ni Kyokufuri Shitai to Omoimasu. 2 (BOFURI: I Don't Want to Get Hurt, so I'll Max Out My Defense. Season 2) - This fell off a bit, and I think I know why. It suffered from the same thing as later Dog Days seasons, where it used its expansive cast by shuffling who hangs out with who. This provides less novelty than the original concept of "what will they get up to now" did, and it also necessarily slows things to a crawl as we need to see more perspectives on every event as a result. Still, the characters remain fun and the game is as busted as ever. 7/10.

Dropped:

Kaminaki Sekai no Kamisama Katsudou - Garbage. A fetish fest with godawful CGI. Rancid vibes. You'll never know where it's going. You may have trouble looking away. I did eventually, though. Dropped at episode 10. 6/10.

Isekai One Turn Kill Neesan: Ane Douhan no Isekai Seikatsu Hajimemashita (My One-Hit Kill Sister) - Lots of Rule D edging. The quality isn't the most consistent, the tropes are basic, and little of value is to be found here. When it's good, it's actually kinda good. Unfortunately it got boring. Dropped at episode 10. 6/10.

Edomae Elf (Otaku Elf) - Elf in real world! Wooo! A nice comfy show. Not much happens, but it's cute enough. Got boring in the end though. Dropped at episode 10. 7/10.

My Home Hero - It's hard to think of anything recently that used tension and suspense to this degree. That said, the every-episode cliffhangers eventually got exhausting and turned me off and I stopped keeping up. 7/10 not for me.

uhhhh it’s kinda late this season and idek if i REALLY feel like doing it but here goes

New Shit:

Why Raelina Ended Up at the Duke’s Mansion: probably my favorite of the season so far. corsets, conspiracies, and hot dangerous men as far as the eye can see

Mashle: lives up to the hype! it’s just One Punch Man + Harry Potter - JKR’s shitty politics

KamiKatsu: absolutely demented. i truly have no idea whatsoever what’s coming week-to-week

Magical Destroyers: was not sold at all initially, but the OP kept drawing me back and i think i’m on board now

I Got a Cheat Skill…: pretty generic power fantasy/wish fulfillment, but executed well enough to keep me interested

Skip and Loafer: fucking adorable. love these lil rascals

Rokudo’s Bad Girls: this show gives me nostalgia for an era of anime that i wasn’t even super into. don’t let the art style turn you off, it’s some of the most fun you can have with a show this season (besides Birdie Wing of course)

Hell’s Paradise: more grimdark than the shit i usually like, but i’m sticking around at least long enough to figure out what kinda Dr Zhivago shit they got going on the island

Sacrificial Princess and the King of Beasts: been a long time since i saw a show that was both this wholesome and also For The Freaks…

A Galaxy Next Door: … except for maybe this one. real “The Writer’s Barely Disguised Fetish” hours

Yamada-kun at Lvl 999: great little romcom! and then there’s randomly one episode (episode 5) that is legit one of the most harrowing episodes of television that i’ve ever seen! and then goes back to normal romcom. kinda weird show

Otaku Elf: very cute, very silly, very relatable

Dangers of the Heart: also very cute, silly and relatable, but instead of a cringe otaku girl, it’s a cringe emo boy

Insomniacs After School: scratching my Call of the Night itch. newest ep was some of the cutest shit i’ve ever seen

Old Shit:

Birdie Wing: YOU KNOW WHAT THE FUCK TIME IT IS LET’S GOOOOO

The Megumin Show: from the very first minute, i knew that this show would not disappoint. and it hasn’t yet! (knock on wood)

Demon Slayer: it’s more Demon Slayer. what, you thought it was gonna be bad? no. it rules. it’s not gonna stop ruling

Shit I Need To Start/Get Back To/Might Drop:

Yuri Is My Job: it’s good, but i also don’t remember the last time i cringed so hard at a show

The Café Terrace and Its Goddesses: exquisite trash. kinda hate the main character, but can’t wait to get back around to it

Oshi no Ko: watched the first episode, thought it was great, have had no desire to watch more since? i’ll get back to it at some point i’m sure

Ranking of Kings: found out about the author’s politics a few weeks before this came out and just haven’t really felt like watching it. i’m sure i will at some point tho lol

Dead Mount Death Play: dunno. good first episode. but it’s just not really my thing

Too Cute Crisis: looks fun!

Heavenly Delusion: keep forgetting it exists because it’s on hulu

just read all of skip to loafer in one sitting at your command and it is such a sweet and well-written manga! if you have any other recommendations i'd love to hear them, i trust your taste implicitly now

ROMANCE

kimi ni todoke (completed)

if you like high school romance/shoujo, you will like kimi ni todoke (if you haven't read it already). slow burn but very worth it!!! there's also a 2 season anime but it doesn't cover everything that happens in the manga so i definitely recommend reading it if you want the True Ending

genderless danshi ni ai sarete imasu - i'm loved by a genderless man (ongoing)

ok so this one doesn't have many chapters out yet but i'm obsessed with it. if you like gnc men and domestic fluff this is the manga for you. the art style is also adorable and it's genuinely such a sweet and fun read

banana fish (completed)

COMING OF AGE

ao no flag - blue flag (completed)

high school slice of life with really endearing characters (many of whom are lgbt+) and gorgeous art. fun and heartwarming. has some weird messaging in a few places but overall very solid and has a great ending

shimanami tasogare - our dreams at dusk (completed)

another slice of life with almost exclusively lgbt+ characters and gorgeous art. this is one of my all-time favorite mangas. deals a lot with homophobia/transphobia, but in a very sensitive and accurate way. highly recommend.

FANTASY:

tongari boushi no atelier - witch hat atelier/atelier of witch hat (ongoing)

incredibly wholesome but also sometimes spooky story about little girls training to be witches. has a very balanced magic system and excellent worldbuilding in addition to beautiful art and lovable characters. you will read this

akagami no shirayukihime - snow white with the red hair (ongoing)

fantasy/romance with a lovable girlboss protagonist. this one is a hard sell because i feel like only like 5 people on the planet have heard of it and it's kind of long but its endearing characters and the loving relationships/friendships between them make it one of my favorites. it's genuinely so wholesome. also, the art style gets SO MUCH BETTER than what you'll see at first. trust me. later chapters are fucking gorgeous. please read this (or watch the anime. its 2 seasons and pretty good even though it doesn't cover everything)

Bookshelf Briefs 9/13/21

A Certain Scientific Railgun: Astral Buddy, Vol. 4 | By Kazuma Kamachi and Yasuhito Nogi |Seven Seas – Despite the cliffhanger from the last book, Junko and Gunha are too similar to really be enemies, and are both quite happy to resolve things via punching and GUTS!. Other than that, this is a good final volume to this unlikely spinoff, hitting on the best moral lessons from Railgun. (Everyone on the science side is terrible, but no one is truly irredeemable, especially the kids.) There’s also a PILE of yuri here, between Misaki and Junko, of course, but also Misaki and Kuroko, of all people, who is reminded that, at the end of the day, she will never be able to do anything but watch Mikoto’s back. Well worth the time for any fan of Railgun and its ilk. – Sean Gaffney

The Girl Without a Face | By tearontaron | Yen Press – I’m always interested in manga that feature yokai, so naturally I was intrigued by The Girl Without a Face, one of the most wholesome examples that I’ve read so far. The volume collects a series of short manga originally released by the creator on Twitter which focus on an extremely lovely-dovey couple living together as boyfriend and girlfriend. He’s a human while she’s a noppera-bo, a yokai that looks human except for the lack of facial features. (Granted, it appears as though the boyfriend’s the only human resident in a town full of yokai, so he’s arguably the stranger one of the two.) Most of the short vignettes follow very similar patterns and beats, the stories focusing on the power of the couple’s love and devotion to see them through any sort of communication challenge. The Girl Without a Face is admittedly repetitive, but it’s also very cute and sweet. – Ash Brown

Skip and Loafer, Vol. 1 | By Misaki Takamatsu | Seven Seas – This story about a girl from way out in the country and her adventures in the city shouldn’t work as well as it does, but it DOES work very well, being an incredibly strong debut. Mitsumi may have a lot of Manic Pixie Dream Girl to her, but instead of just one guy (Sousuke, who is clearly the Cheerful Guy With A Bittersweet Past), it’s an entire group from her school—the desperate social climber, the easygoing popular girl, and the shy nerdy girl. All of them are trying hard to deal with the ins and outs of high school cliques and pressures, only to watch Mitsumi sail right over it all. All this plus some excellent subtle trans representation make this a definite one to buy. – Sean Gaffney

Snow White with the Red Hair, Vol. 14 | By Sorata Akiduki | Viz Media – I have expressed my displeasure before with Hakusensha shoujo seies padding out a volume by only having the main title for 2/3 of it and then putting in older, one-shots by the same artist to pad things out. We get that again here, and it’s still annoying. Especially because I’m really enjoying the actual story we get here. Despite the threat of Shirayuki and Zen being separated for a long stretch, they reunite here, if only temporarily. The bond between them reminds me that Obi fans really have a long way to go to convince the author. I also really appreciate the attention paid to medical research, how hard it is, and how often it doesn’t work. It gives this series a depth beyond the romance. – Sean Gaffney

Sweat and Soap, Vol. 7 | By Kintetsu Yamada | Kodansha Comics – Asako may sweat a lot naturally, but she also tends to sweat a lot because of her tendency to get stressed out. Thus the idea of finally meeting Kotaro’s parents has her wiping herself down multiple times a day. That said, this is not really a manga for extended drama, so no surprises to hear that the visit goes pretty well. The surprise is that Kotaro’s mother is blind, having gradually lost her site after she got married, but this is handled subtly and without calling too much attention to it. Kotaro also runs into the guy who hit on Asako earlier, but even then they end up bonding and discussing the importance of floral arrangements at a convention dedicated to scented products. This runs on pure sweetness. – Sean Gaffney
