I think we don’t consider enough, that Grian wanted to be a watcher. We always talk about, how he escaped them. But I think the whole story becomes a lot more interesting and terrifying when we take into consideration that Grian wanted the watcher life. He wanted that power, he wanted to leave his human life and become one of them.
At the end of Evo he choose to join the watchers. Which means the story is not one of a cult member escaping, but of a person joining something he probably didn’t know was a cult and slowly realizing all the fucked up things going on and then escaping.
Also just the act of realizing he made the wrong choice, that he traded his life for this. Hating himself for being this dumb and joining; and now having to deal with his choice, fully knowing it was all his own fault, his own greed for power.
It becomes even worse when we start thinking about this in terms of the life series. I mean, imagine escaping a cult and being happily out of it and out of its reach (hermitcraft) and then you‘re thrusted into their power again (life series).
The horror, the angst, the flashbacks of being one of them. All of that after thinking to have escaped for good.

Originally this came from a sketch for a comic I wanted to make, but the comic is unfinished and I needed a thumbnail for my next Video.
Trust me it's totally wholesome Bad boys...

TW: Scopophobia
I've been daydreaming excessively about some Welcome Home AUs for this past hot minute, and during one of these said daydreams, I thought of this cute scenario with @deadlyeyez 's Watcher! Wally!! This scenario isn't cannon in this AU in any way that I know of, but I thought that it was cute, so I made a lil' comic about it! :D
I hope to golly y'all can read my handwriting! If not, I will gladly add a typed transcript if needed!
Watcher Wally was SO fun to draw, and writing all the little pet names for (Y/N) made me feel so giddy! I hope y'all enjoy this comic!

hello neighbors! i come bearing more watcher wally lore!
please look under the cut, as this can be triggering to those with pyrophobia or encavmaphobia!
it appears that wally isn’t doing too HOT, haha!
as to explain the lore itself…
this takes place long, long before wally had the idea of the nighttime show. wally was growing tired. he was tired of living in fear of Home, tired of sleeping in Barnaby’s house to avoid it, only to be met with a worse fate each time he came back.
his solution? burn it. burn down Home. it was made of wood and nails, after all.
however.
this is written in such a way for a reason.
“ as above , so below . “
wally didn’t know this.
so as wally lit a match and threw it into Home, he began to feel hotter, and hotter, and hotter, until he realized he was burning too. he couldn’t put it out.
he thought he was going to die there, but through how blurry his vision was, he could see his neighbors running to put out the flame, Frank leaning over him, his head swimming, and then the dark.
———————
when he awoke, he was in Howdy’s shop, in the back. Barnaby laid kneeled on the floor, the rest of his neighbors standing circled around him, with only Howdy himself missing.
“what happened?” one asks, and he felt his heart break.
he couldn’t tell them about the terrors of Home. he was meant to carry that burden alone. so he looked down at himself to see his felt skin burned and scorched and blackened with ash. he could see it slowly healing bit, pieces of his skin overlapping back to that natural yellow hue.
“Howdy is repairing Home,” Frank said, quiet. “what happened, neighbor?”
wally shook, and he suddenly felt his nonexistent gut wrench. “i don’t know,” he told them, the lie rolling off his tongue easily as ever. he looked down at the ground as he realized what had really happened to him.
he couldn’t destroy home. it would destroy him in the process.
as above , down below .
