My grandmother is Japanese and really likes to give gifts. Often those gifts are Japanese desserts or other food, but sometimes she just slips me cash, folded up inside a tiny, beautiful envelope. But she likes to pretend she's not giving me money, so when possible, she'll hide it somewhere that I will find later.

Today I spent the afternoon with her doing chores and tech support, and she clearly felt this warranted a significant gift in return (no matter that I enjoyed myself). But she forgot to slip something into my pocket or bag before I left, so instead she rushed outside as I was starting my car, making the old-school "roll down the window" gesture. Once I complied, she was forced to acknowledge she was handing me money, but she also tried to minimize the gesture.

The result was that she said, "Thank you, dear! I just wanted you to be able to... to buy yourself a hamburger," and then handed me a darling little envelope that turned out to contain $100. And all I could think was:

ok so i need to start this off by saying BRING POOL BACK IMMEDIATELY!! please with the intro and everything. it’s just so fucking good. next up, which i know might be controversial, but i’d love to hear fences live once (i would watch this video all the time when i was younger, it just seems like a lot of fun). i always think it sounds so cool. and then obviously i’m on my knees screaming and crying for them to bring back Let The Flames Begin / Part II, which i know they’re probably sick of but it always turned out so good!!! and Turn It Off & Careful are my #1 picks. like, genuinely I need to hear them live or else. Also, Sugar on the Rim.

anyways i used to be better at pinpointing my favorite performances because i would watch them to a point where it was super concerning, now i’m a bit more mellow about it. however, since you asked i will attempt to deliver. just for you, dear anon.

this is in no particular order or anything, basically i’m just going off what i remember really saying damn this is good about (which is super easy when you love a band like paramore).

First off let’s start with the Miracle Outro performed during Brand New Eyes era. this song just goes so fucking hard and i curse Josh Farro for the fact that he wrote it so they couldn’t record it and release it since he left the band soon thereafter.

Paramore at Wembley Arena in 2009 — This concert is so good. like thank god this person filmed it and decided to upload it to youtube. I cannot get enough of Intro / Ignorance. truly.

RTMorasonMD had a great full concert vid from 2010, the sound quality is great for 2010 too. considering most of the time videos look like they were filmed with an nintendo D.S..

Paramore at The House of Blues in Anaheim, California (2006) this is like nostalgia city for me. I remember running my old paramore fan account on instagram and stumbling on this and being like… i’ve hit the paramore jackpot. shout out to Paramore History for always posting the real hard to find stuff… where would we be without you?

When Paramore performed Careful at Warped Tour in 2011 or like the whole Warped Tour Set — i will say this over and over again on this post but i have to be real with you when i say, i watched these videos so much it’s crazy. but careful was my favorite. i love careful. any performance or careful and i’m there.

Paramore live in Paris (2013) when i tell you i watched this religiously i mean it. i could probably do all the dance moves / movements hayley did in this specific video way back when. i was obsessed.

Paramore performing Let The Flames Begin / Part II at Bunbury in Cincinnati (2014) i just love this one. like all of these are just nostalgic for me and i can’t help but want to show you.

When Paramore performed Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen and then it went into Hallelujah by Paramore (lol) at Parahoy (2016). What a way to open the show. i mean, i remember watching the final riot and being totally in love with Hayley’s voice and the way she sang it. I think I was introduced to Hallelujah by Shrek but Paramore was the second one to show me the ways of Leonard Cohen. Thanks for that.

I Caught Myself in Hamburg (2017) is an obvious one but I feel like I had to mention it… the emotion Hayley fucking pours into this performance makes me want to cry.

Turn It Off live from Grand Casino in Hickley, MN (2017) we’ve all seen this one i think? but what an incredibly breath taking performance of turn it off. i mean.. damn.

Fake Happy performed at Rock for People in the Czech Republic (2017) the quality is insane for this one. I remember being totally obsessed with this. so i’m adding it here; to share with you.

Pool / Idle Worship in Paris (2018) something must be in the water when they go to paris because i love these videos.

Pool live in Amsterdam (2018) is another one that came to mind cuz the sound quality goes crazy. it’s just beautiful.

The full 2018 RED ROCKS show because the sound is great and i just remembered being obsessed with this. you’re kinda cracking my head open like an egg with this ask and i love it.

Sad news out of Britain today. I mean, all news out of the UK is sad these days (have you heard about the RAAC thing? And how committed they are to fixing that? Fun stuff), but I'm specifically talking about the High Speed 2 rail line (HS2 for short), which will now forever be left unfinished. This video goes a bit more into detail.

The rough background here is that HS2 was a project to build a new high speed rail line from London (specifically London Euston station) north to Birmingham, Leeds and Manchester. This would drastically cut travel times between these cities, but that wasn't even the main point.

The main point is that the railway lines between these cities today are heavily overloaded with fast intercity trains, slow commuter trains and freight trains. This mixture can work, but only for so long. Fast trains and slow trains mixing is an issue in particular (freight less so because it can often travel at night), because you need to leave a lot of space between the slow train and the fast train - else the fast train catches up and can't actually travel fast.

Moving all the fast trains to a new line frees up drastic amounts of capacity on the old line. It's not just that every train on the new line allows one more commuter train on the old one, every train on the new line allows several more commuter trains.

(Building the line for freight or commuters instead would not have been a great idea. Modern freight lines aren't actually much cheaper than high speed lines, as can be seen in Austria and most purely in the Netherlands. Building a commuter line would be even more expensive, because you need to do that through villages, towns and cities where people live, instead of far away in mostly open space.)

Anyway, that's all theory and doesn't matter anymore, because it's apparently mostly going to get cancelled. They'll build only the section from Birmingham to a point just out of core London, because that section is essentially 90% done already. That means trains further north will still share tracks with commuter trains along the way, and the very expensive new line will see very little traffic.

There will certainly be people in the UK who are happy about that, including in the press, but Brexit has shown how much you can trust them. There are also environmental groups who were against this project, but it's not all of them, and their arguments against the line were mostly wrong and classic NIMBYism.

Anyway, I'm just rambling here. I don't live in the UK, this doesn't affect me directly (except for the extra carbon dioxide that will be emitted long-term as a result of this), I just think it's sad to see. I hope California doesn't make the same mistake, and that we in Germany can get Hanover-Hamburg and Hanover-Bielefeld built, even if things don't look good at the moment.

Book Review: THE SEVENTH MANSION by Maryse Meijer

(Full disclosure: I received a free e-ARC for review though Edelweiss. Trigger warning for sexual assault, homophobia, violence against animals, and disturbing sexual content.)

There is this person I love. And he’s not even a person.

After Xie's parents split and an environmental disaster sends his already precarious mental health spiraling, Xie and his father Erik relocate from California to an unnamed town in the rural south, in search of the proverbial fresh start.

At first, Xie is your garden-variety teenage outcast: melancholy. goth. vegan. an outsider. friendless. forgettable. Yet he's quickly "adopted" by the only other vegans in the school - girlfriends Jo and Leni, who together make up the entirety of FKK.

The group's animal rights activism slowly evolves from leafleting to direct action: the trio breaks into a local mink farm, freeing as many of its captives as they can. Xie is nabbed during the getaway, and suddenly he goes from "nobody" to "that freak who vandalized the Moore farm". Instead of silence and indifference, Xie is met by hostile sneers, gossip, and relentless bullying. He takes a leave of absence from high school, instead getting one-on-one tutoring at the local library. His parents are forced to pay restitution, and Xie's placed on probation.

Xie's only respite is nature: his burgeoning vegetable garden; the small but pristine forest behind his house; and, eventually, the mysterious light, nestled among the branches, that leads him to a tiny church - and his beloved. St. Pancratius, who was martyred in 304 A.D. and whose remains are on covert display in a one-room church in the middle of nowhere.

He traces the image with his finger. The story the same in every version: A boy on a road, refusing to lift his sword against the lamb, losing his head every time the story is told, again and again and again.

Still, all of this comes with a cost: loving nature, whether animal, vegetable, or mineral, means saying goodbye to it one day. Relationships can be messy, even when they're with clean bones. Sometimes we get so wrapped up in our own shit that we're oblivious to what our loved ones are going through. Maybe your tutor shows up to work one day piss drunk and tells you about her abortion. Or your friends drag you to a backwoods meeting of environmental activists, where one of them sexually assaults you. Or you show up to a mass protest that is even more massive than you anticipated, and find you're unable to protect yourself, let alone the 55 billion+ land animals slaughtered for food every year in the US alone (animalclock.org).

The problem is too big, even when it's one of the smaller ones. The problem is impossible.

While disturbing, Xie's theft of a skeleton is not the worst crime he'll commit in his teen years. As FKK becomes involved with a local animal rights group, and Xie's sanctuary is threatened, he careens toward an inevitable (????) collision with the outside world, which neither understands him - nor cares to. (Fuck capitalism.)

THE SEVENTH MANSION is one weird-ass book; I mean, the main character has sex with a skeleton (!). This is certainly the wildest aspect of the story, but it's not alone. For example, take the narrative structure, which has a kind of stream-of-(Xie's)-consciousness vibe. Many of the sentences are fractured, even forced, as though we're pulling them from the depth's of Xie's tortured soul. His thoughts. Are broken. Up. Like this. Conversely, there are no chapters, and so many of the paragraphs are just huge, unbroken blocks of text - almost as though Meijer is framing Xie in opposition to the larger world around him.*

I suspect that THE SEVENTH MANSION is one of those love it or hate it dealios. Personally, I loved it, even as some parts proved excruciatingly unbearable to read.

I don't know whether Meijer is vegan, but she gets so much right; sometimes it felt like she was rooting around inside my head. I went vegetarian my freshman year of college (1996, not to date myself) and vegan about 9 years later. Reading Xie was like having a mirror held up to my own depressive, anxious, vegan psyche. One thing carnists probably don't realize about walking around this world as a vegan is: it takes a ton of mental work, of suppression and dissociation, just to get through the day.

Animal suffering is omnipresent, and largely accepted. From Carl's Jr. commercials to classroom trips to the zoo; leather car seats to team lunches at non-vegan restaurants, where you'll be forced to watch your coworkers and friends devour the corpse of a once-living creature - someone's mother, brother, or child - we are constantly forced to bear witness to the oppression of animals. Worse, to pretend as though it's of no consequence: just to get along, or because doing otherwise would quickly devour your time, your prospects, your relationships. To say that it's depressing is an understatement.

Whether Xie is living through the oil spill that finally made his world "snap," or gazing into the eyes of caged mink, I was right there with him, trying not to cry. Not to break. There's so much suffering in the world; if you try to take it all in, to truly understand its scope, it will swallow you whole.

Speaking of the oil spill, which was the impetus for Xie to go vegan - Meijer's description of this moment in Xie's life brought back so many memories. When I decided to stop eating meat, I was working at a local grocery store. Every now and again, they had an employee appreciation dinner (in lieu of a raise, natch), which basically consisted of all you can eat burgers and hot dogs in the break room. Everyone would stuff their faces, taking in as many free calories as possible. Not because they were hungry, but to get as much of a leg up on our cheap ass employer as possible. The sheer gluttony and waste of it all is what finally did it for me. No one needed to eat seven hamburgers in one night; we did because we could, because not doing so would be to lose out. The working class eating the chattel, and no one eating the rich.

Point being, that's a singular moment in my life that I'll never forget. It stands out in stark relief, right alongside the deaths of my husband and furkids (six dogs and one cat down and counting). If I close my eyes, I can almost transport myself back there, white starched shirt, demo table, 7PM Friday fatigue, and all.

The last time he ate meat he was twelve years old, after the spill: Xie was Alex then. Even miles from the beach, they could smell something off; at first they thought it was the sandwiches, ham pressed hot in the pockets of Erik’s windbreaker, but the closer they got to the beach the stronger the smell became, noxious, chemical. They parked at their usual spot, yellow tape blocking access to the beach beyond. A black ribbon flat against the horizon; that was the water. No trace of blue. On the rocks below the lot a half dozen pelicans huddled together. Coated from beak to foot in oil. Don’t touch them, his father said. Someone will come wash it off. But there was no one. The black sea lapping the sand. Those bewildered eyes. He watched as one of the birds collapsed, its head twisted sideways against its folded neck. His father pulled him away. The fire on the water burned for two weeks; the beach remained black for a year. Sea turtles, dolphins, whales, gulls, crabs, otters, fish, birds rolled up by the waves in the tens of thousands. Oil on meat on sand. No stopping it. Xie got headaches, bloody noses; he was always tired, couldn’t sleep. His mother standing in the doorway, Stop playing games, you’re fine. But his father was never angry. Scared of what he saw. Xie in the dark. Unable to make it from one room to another. The people who used to go to the beach just went somewhere else. Life as usual. Slumped in the backseat as his father fed gas into the truck he suddenly couldn’t stand it. Stopped standing it. He opened the back door, started walking. Alex, his father called, but he was not Alex anymore. He poured out all the milk in the house and fed the meat to the dogs next door and rode his bike everywhere.

So yeah, our circumstances may be different, but Xie's conversion sure hit me in the feels.

Meijer also does an excellent job capturing the heartbreak and urgency of Millennials and Gen Z. As tormented as I might have been in high school, at least I had the luxury of not thinking too much about climate change - at least until Al Gore came along. Xie and his peers, on the other hand, will bear the brunt of their predecessors' unchecked greed. Nowhere is this divide more eloquently laid bare than in Jo's post-march argument with Erik (who is likely around my age):

Didn’t you see how he just folded up out there? He can’t protect himself, he won’t. You don’t know what he was like, before we came here, okay, you didn’t watch him, lying in bed day after day, ready to cut his goddamn throat because of all this shit, this constant litany of doomsday statistics, he just takes it in and he can’t—he doesn’t know what to do with it, and you want to keep shoving it in his face, when it’s—it’s enough! Staring at Jo, who stares back. Look, whatever you’re afraid of, whatever he’s afraid of, it’s already happening, okay? And he knows it, he’s living it, and he wants to do something about it. If there was some other option, some fantasyland where everything is going to be fine as long as we bury our heads in the sand, then believe me, I’d take it. But there’s not. Not for me and not for Leni and not for Xie and if you think you can protect him by denying that then you’re just—wrong. I’m sorry. She holds Erik’s gaze; he nods, the first to look away.

My gods, that scene just cuts me to the bone. As bleak as things are now, I cannot imagine going through all this - climate change, COVID-19, a Trump presidency, Democratic ineptitude/complicity, *gesturing wildly* - as an adolescent. Their elders cut them down before they even started crawling.

On a lighter note, Xie's scenes with his clueless mom and her equally clueless new husband (Jerry!) brought a(n admittedly wry) smile to my face. If I had a penny for every times this scene has played out in my life, I'd have enough cash monies to start my own animal sanctuary.

Don’t you want some vegetables, Xie? Jerry asks. I don’t eat animal products, Xie murmurs, and Jerry, confused, staring at the green beans, How is this— Butter, Xie interrupts. Butter is from milk, which is from cows, which are animals. Jerry blinks. Gosh, I didn’t even think of that. Sorry. Xie shrugs.

There's so much to obsess about here: I love Jo and Leni together, and their opposing circumstances just make the relationship so much more complex - and potentially fraught. Erik and tutor Karen (I wonder if the name choice was intentional?) are interesting supporting characters, and their relationships with Xie are so beautiful and nuanced; they both support him the best they know how.

Xie's interactions with his phantom lover are a little more confusing and difficult for me to comprehend. Perhaps P. represents Xie's inability to connect with the human world around him, or at least not as well as the more abstract, ephemeral natural world. Possibly P. is Xie's ideal human: one who would rather die than raise a finger against an animal (or one who cannot disappoint you by voicing their own opinions). Summary: This is a twin fic that goes along with casbeanwrite's A Safe Deposit This is the same fic from Castiel's point of view, plus the aftermath and a sweet ending. Castiel is a nurse at a fertility clinic. Dean is a sperm donor for his friend Charlie and her wife. They flirt over a cup of Dean's semen and go on their first date.

Castiel was a hard worker throughout his whole life. Some would call him a workaholic, but what could he say? He liked his job. He worked in a fertility clinic as a nurse. There were ups and downs to his job, as there were with any career. He mostly saw couples, women trying to have children, and then there were the men coming in for fertility tests where they would have to make a deposit. Every once in a while, that part was awkward, but he always did his best to make sure everyone felt comfortable and like they weren’t being judged.

Today was different than the usual days. It was all normal until Mr. Green eyes and oh-so-sexy bowlegs walked in. He only felt slightly creepy when he immediately looked up this guy’s file for a name. Dean. He put on his professional face and tried to make Dean comfortable.

The last thing he expected was for Dean to flirt with him . He was surprised and a little embarrassed. This guy was either married or in a committed relationship, so that made this awkward and inappropriate. He brought the magazines Dean asked for and left when he asked, his cheeks flushed pink. He went back to his station to work on some paperwork. That was when his coworker, Balthazar, decided to bother him.

“Hey Cassie. Did you see the stud that just came in?”

“Yes, I did. I was the one who took him back.” Castiel tried to ignore him, but it was no use. Balthazar’s arm was on his shoulder and he was all up in his space.

“You gonna get his number?”

“He’s in a fertility clinic. I’m sure he’s in a very loving and committed relationship.”

Balthazar hummed. “Why don’t you find out what he’s in for?”

Castiel picked up Dean’s file and skimmed over it. Sure enough, he was a donor for someone named Dorothy. She had a patient file here too. Castiel couldn’t help but feel a little disappointed, but he knew it was just part of the job. Dean said he flirted when he was nervous, so he wasn’t really interested in Castiel, he was just weirded out. Castiel ignored Balthazar while he waited for Dean to return.

When Dean did return, he found out that Dean wasn’t trying to get a wife or girlfriend pregnant, he was donating for his lesbian friends. Oh, that was sweet. Too sweet. Of course Dean was stupidly hot and a sweet guy. Getting his number had to be one of the greatest moments of his life.

When he arrived home that evening, he immediately started getting ready. He showered and shaved, leaving a thin layer of stubble. He startled when he turned and his daughter, Claire, was right there in the doorway after he got dressed.

“Do you have a date?”

Castiel smiled a bit. “Maybe.” He was so thankful for the relationship he had with Claire. It was rocky at first after her mother died, but things were better now. She was fifteen now and she had matured a lot over the past five years.

Claire beamed. “Really? Tell me about him or her. What are they like? Where did you meet them?”

Castiel smiled. “His name is Dean. I met him at work.”

“You didn’t tell me they hired someone new.”

“He doesn’t work there.”

“...You’re going a date with a patient?”

“Yes, but he’s single. He was there to donate for his friends, who are lesbians, so they can’t conceive on their own.”

Claire smiled. “That’s sweet. Is he cute?”

“Very.” Castiel finished tying his tie and gave Claire a gentle squeeze of the shoulder as he passed her.

A few hours later, Castiel found himself waiting at a table at a local restaurant. He tapped his foot anxiously as he waited for Dean. When he finally saw him across the restaurant, he couldn’t resist the urge to beam and stand up to make himself more visible.

He wasn’t sure if it would be appropriate to hug Dean or just wave, so with his hand up, he stuck it out for Dean to shake, as if that wasn’t the most awkward thing he had ever done. He felt a slight rush of relief when Dean simply laughed and shook his hand.

“Relax, man. It’s just dinner.”

“Dinner with the man I flirted with over a cup of semen while I was at work.” Castiel sat back down in his seat. “I’ve never been here before.”

“You’ve never been to The Roadhouse? If you like burgers, you’re going to love this.” He sat down across from Castiel and placed his arms on the table, leaning forward with a flirty grin.

Castiel smiled softly. “I do love hamburgers.” His phone dinged and he blushed. “I’m sorry, I know it’s rude to text on a date, but I need to leave my phone on in case my daughter texts me.”

“No, don’t be sorry. Making sure your kid is okay is more important than stupid date etiquette.”

Castiel checked his phone, and sure enough, it was Claire.

How’s it going? Is he there yet?

Castiel Novak

Great. He just got here. Are you okay?

Claire Novak

I’m fine. I’m just checking in on you. Have fun!

Castiel smiled at his phone and set it aside. “She was just asking if you were here yet.”

Dean nodded. “How old is she?”

“She just turned fifteen.”

“Big birthday. She get her driver’s permit?”

“Oh yeah, she did. I felt bad, because I started crying at the DMV and embarrassed her. She says it wasn’t actually that embarrassing, but it was embarrassing for me.” He blushed. Why was he admitting this on a date?

“That’s sweet. You sound like a really caring father.”

Castiel smiled. Damn, he was just as charming and nice as he was attractive. “Thank you. I try to be. She’s the light of my life. I do everything for her. It hasn’t exactly been easy for her, so she deserves everything I can give her now.” He would have stopped at ‘thank you’, but Dean seemed to be enjoying listening to him, which felt nice.

“How is it that you’re stupidly gorgeous and a great guy all in one?”

Castiel’s cheeks flushed. “You’re saying that about me? I was thinking the same about you. I’ve been thinking that ever since we got here. You’ve let me sit here and blab about my daughter and you’ve barely spoken.”

“Maybe it’s just because I love the sound of your voice. After all, thinking about it is what got me off today.” Dean put a hand over his face. “God, I really can’t control myself around you.”

Castiel laughed softly. “It is pretty entertaining.” He glanced up as the waitress that sat him approaching the table. She grinned at Dean.

“So you finally got a hot date? About time. You gettin’ your usual?”

Dean grinned up at the waitress. “Hell yeah I am. How’re you, Jo?”

“I’m good. Mom’s behind the bar tonight and Ash is bussing tables, as usual.” She looked over at Castiel. “If he gives you any trouble, you tell me and I’ll whoop his ass.”

Castiel smiled. “I’ll be sure to do that, thank you.”

Jo smiled back. “What can I get for you?”

“I’ll just have a water and a cheeseburger with the usual toppings, thank you.”

Jo picked up their menus and left to go get their drinks.

Castiel looked back at Dean. “You must come here a lot.”

“Oh yeah, I’ve come here since I was a teenager. Jo and I went to highschool together. She’s a fireball. Her mom is too. Ash is a cool guy. He’s the one with the mullet. You’ll see him around.”

Castiel nodded. “I’ve talked a lot about my family, tell me about yours.”

“Well, not much to say. I don’t have a lot of family. There’s my little brother, Sammy. He lives out in Palo Alto, California. He’s a lawyer. He’s such a smart kid. He got a full ride to Stanford right out of highschool. His fiance, Jessica, she’s a sweetheart. They’re going to move out here at the end of the year. I miss them, so I’m looking forward to being able to see them more. I hate driving out there.”

“Why don’t you fly?”

“Hell no. I don’t do planes.” Dean shook his head. “I love driving, but 25 hours is rough. I usually stop overnight, so it takes two days to get there, three if I don’t leave at the asscrack of dawn.”

Castiel nodded. “I understand. Everyone has some irrational fear.” He smiled softly. “That’s really impressive that your brother went to Stanford.”

Dean beamed proudly. “I know, right. He’s a good kid, so smart.”

“You probably miss him.”

“Oh yeah, I miss him a lot. I can’t wait for him to move down here.” He smiled. “What’s your daughter’s name?”

“Claire.” He picked up his phone and showed his wallpaper, which was a picture of him and Claire. She had her hair long and braided on the side, which was her favorite style.

Dean smiled. “That’s a great picture. She looks like she loves you a lot.”

“She does.” Castiel set his phone back down. He was absolutely smitten as he talked to Dean. Conversation flowed with ease and was barely interrupted by the arrival of their food. They talked over their burgers and Castiel learned a lot about Dean. He was an auto mechanic, and had worked on cars since he was ten. He grew up all over the continental US, but he was born in right here in Lawrence, and he spent his high school years in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. They were still talking long after their meals were over, and soon it was getting late.

“I hate to cut us off, but I did promise Claire I’d be home before nine. I’m sure she would be fine, but I should still probably go.”

“Oh wow, it’s that late? Damn, yeah I’ll let you go.”

Castiel was going to just go home, but then he blurted something out. “Do you want to come over?”

Dean blinked in surprise. “I mean, yeah, I’d like that.”

Castiel was tense until he heard Dean’s answer. He wanted to spend more time with Dean. “You want to follow me there? It’s not far.”

“Sounds good.” Dean led the way out of the Roadhouse. They had already paid for their meals. He looked around. “Which car is yours?”

“The Lincoln, right over there.”

Dean nodded. “Alright. See you there.” He smiled.

Castiel smiled back and nodded. “See you there.” He got into his car and made sure Dean was behind him before he started driving. His house was a cute townhouse near the center of town. He had a flower garden out front and a vegetable garden in the back. He parked in his garage and got out of his car. He looked back at Dean’s car and walked to the driver’s side door. When Dean rolled down the window, he leaned in slightly.

“Mind if I go in first to let Claire know you’re here?”

“Not at all.” Dean chewed his lip as Castiel started to leave. “Wait-“

“Hm?” Castiel turned back and found Dean’s face way closer than before. His eyes flicked down to his lips and he swallowed. A few seconds later, Dean leaned forward and pressed their lips together in a quick kiss. Castiel kissed back and pulled away with a grin. “I’ll be back.” He was practically giddy as he walked up to the door and let himself in. Within seconds, Claire was bounding down the stairs.

“Tell me everything! What’s he like? What did you do? Was he nice? Did you tell him about me?”

Castiel smiled. “Slow down, it’s actually not over yet. He’s in the driveway and-“

“Can I meet him?”

“Sure. I just wanted to let you know that he was here before letting him inside. I didn’t want to startle you. Have you done your homework yet?”

“No, but-“

“You can meet Dean, but then you’re going to finish your homework. It’s late.”

Claire nodded. “Okay.”

Castiel stepped back outside and waved for Dean to come inside.

Dean walked up the sidewalk. “I like the garden.”

“Thank you.” Castiel let Dean inside. “Dean, this is my daughter, Claire. Claire, this is Dean.”

Claire waved. “Hey, Dean. Thanks for taking my dad out. He needed that. It’s been forever since he’s dated.”

Dean chuckled softly. “No problem. In fairness, I only gave him my number. He asked me out.”

Claire smiled. “He likes you, then. Good to meet you, Dean.”

“Nice to meet you too, Claire.” Dean watched as she went upstairs and then turned to Castiel. “She’s sweet.”

“She is.” He hummed. “Can I get you something to drink?”

“I’m good, thanks.” Dean followed Castiel to the living room and sat down next to him on the couch, taking his shoes off once Castiel did.

Castiel turned the TV on before looking at Dean. “Kiss me again.” He was surprised at his own forwardness, but he needed to feel Dean’s lips again.

Dean had a wide grin. “Another chance to kiss you like I mean it? Hell, I’ll take it.” He ran his thumb over Castiel’s jaw before leaning in for another kiss.

Castiel’s head spun and his world suddenly became very small. All he saw was himself and Dean, right here. All of his worries were gone. Everything with Dean felt so right. He had known this guy for eight hours and he was so head-over-heels. Hands drifted and nothing was rushed. A couch make-out session moved up to Castiel’s bedroom and became something more. Castiel fell asleep that night with his head on Dean’s chest, arm thrown over him.

The following morning, Castiel’s alarm went off and he turned it off, sitting up with a yawn. He looked over and his heart fell when the bed was empty. Did Dean already leave? He put his worries on pause when he heard Claire laughing downstairs. He quickly threw some clothes on and walked downstairs. He was met with a delicious smell of bacon and eggs. He saw Dean in the kitchen cooking and Claire sitting on the island with a piece of bacon in her mouth. Castiel smiled and walked up to Dean. “Good morning.”

“Morning. Hope you don’t mind me making breakfast.”

“Not at all. I can’t cook.”

“He set spaghetti on fire once.” Claire hummed.

Dean laughed. “That’s amazing.” He put the bacon and eggs on plates and set them on the table. When Claire’s back was turned, he snuck a kiss to Castiel’s cheek.

Castiel had no idea that morning how deep his love ran for Dean. That first date became one of many. Dean came over all the time to cook dinner, and they exchanged texts almost constantly. Dean constantly made jokes about how they met.

That evening, Castiel walked the trail to the overlook. When he arrived, he found a blanket laid out and a basket full of food and wine. It was perfect. He watched the sun set over the lake, colors dissipating from the sky. When he stood up, he turned around to find Dean down on one knee with a little box in his hands.

After a year of marriage, Castiel walked into the fertility clinic for the first time without scrubs, because he wasn’t here for work today. Today, he and Dean were here for children of their own.

WHY REPUBLICANS NIXED WITNESSES

1 - He did it, but it's not an impeachable offense.

2 - He did it, but let the voters decide in November.

3 – This is a hoax lynching, so F-off.

4 - The House didn't have any first-hand witnesses, so it's Nancy Pelosi's fault.

5 - Jon Bolton is a disgruntled, rabid, angry man who had a bad childhood.

6 - We can't waste time on this, because if we do, we can't waste time on other stuff.

7 - The whistle blower is a subversive communist who must be unmasked and hanged, or at least given a pantsing by Rand Paul.

8 - He did it, but if I vote for witnesses, I'll be disinvited from CPAC and be reduced to drinking milkshakes with Mitt Romney in the cloakroom — I could even wind up with my head on a pike.

9 - He did it, but if we call witnesses, Americans will get an up-close account of how to run a criminal enterprise from the White House and that would hurt our democracy.

10 - He did it, but Congress has given up its constitutional mandate to check the power of the president. Long live Trump.

DUCK AND COVER, LEGISLATURE IN SESSION

The staff here at Smart Bomb has loaded up on emergency supplies: water, trail mix, flashlights and toilet paper — everything needed to survive a cataclysm. That's right, the Utah Legislature is in session. One of the slimiest and oft-used ploys on Capital Hill is something called a “boxcar.” That's when a legislator puts up a bill that is blank. Cagey lawmakers then wait until the last minute confusion of the session to sneak in language out of the Old Testament and have it voted through before anyone can say, lights out. But the staff here at Smart Bomb has cleverly embedded moles in the Republican caucus to get the skinny. One boxcar would amend Utah liquor law to mandate that fine wine be served in beer mugs. This would dissuade people from drinking wine. A companion boxcar would mandate that beer be served only in champaign flutes. Imagine that at the Twilight Lounge. Another boxcar would force pregnant women to watch a fetus grilled on the spit of a Weber Barbecue before seeking an abortion. This is when some new residents call back the Mayflower Movers. Our intel has it that another one would require everyone over 18 to carry a firearm. The legislation is labeled, “The Safe Utah Law.” Wilson and the band have loaded up on California bud and Pabst Blue Ribbon — it's going to be a long, strange haul to March 14.

CALIFORNIA DREAMIN' IN FINALND

The American Dream is a lot easier to achieve in Finland. So says Sanna Marin, the Finnish prime minister. “We have a very good education system. We have a good health-care and social welfare system that allows anybody to become anything.” These are probably some of the reasons Finland gets ranked the happiest country in the world.” The United States is ranked 17th. Nordic countries are at the top of the World Economic Forum’s “Social Mobility Index,” that evaluates how citizens from all walks of life fare in health, educational achievement and income. The United States ranks No. 27. Don't tell that to Donald Trump (not that you could). But that's not all. In Finland health care is free — for everyone. The Finn's spend about $4,000 per person per year. The U.S. health-care system, by contrast, spends more than $10,000 per person per year. And no surprise, Finns are healthier. Finland also has one of the lowest poverty rates in the world — 6.3 percent compared to 11.8 percent in the U.S. All of that may be true, but the Finns don't have the Super Bowl and pelvis-grinding half-time shows. So put that in your kalakukko and smoke it.

SUPER SUNDAY IS AS AMERICAN AS GUACAMOLE

The nation's big celebration is in the books for another year and many people actually know who won the game. By Easter, few will remember the come-from-behind spectacle of Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. But, hey, the important thing is that Americans all got together in front of a TV and didn't talk politics. We were united by chicken wings and guacamole. Americans ate 1.38 Billion (with a 'B') chicken wings, according to Food & Drink magazine. (We did not make this up.) But that's not all. Americans devoured an estimated 153 Million pounds of avocados for guacamole on Super Sunday, along with 14,500 tons of chips. To wash it all down, we drank an estimated 162 million gallons of beer. On average, each American consumed 2,400 calories. Football, of course, is a dangerous sport — for spectators: Since 2013, avocado accidents (removing the pit with a knife) have accounted for 27,059 trips to the emergency room — the majority of which occurred on Super Sunday. There is no reliable data on hangovers, but a potentially record number of people took Monday off. It's the god's honest truth.

Post Script — There it is, another historic week here at Smart Bomb. And when we say historic, we aren't just whistling “Dixie.” This will go down as the time when unabashed Republican senators tied themselves up in integrity pretzels that even they found embarrassing. Can't you just see Lindsey Graham years from now in his rocking chair gazing out at yesteryear: “The Devil made me do it.” Right. Closer to the present, Michael Bloomberg has drawn first blood in our never-ending presidential campaign: “Trump is a pathological liar who lies about everything: his fake hair, his obesity, and his spray-on tan.” Ouch. That hit the Insulter-In-Chief right where he lives. And speaking of Trumpness, Brian Wilson has called for a boycott of The Beach Boys over their upcoming engagement at a trophy-hunting event featuring Donald Trump Jr. Mike Love is the only remaining member of the '60s California band, who sang about surfing, cars, girls and big-game safaris. WTF. The original quintet (The Wilson brothers, Brian Dennis and Carl and their cousin, Al Jardine) wouldn't be caught dead posing with a leopard carcass. “Help me Rhonda, help me Rhonda now, shoot that big ol' rhinoceros...” Yecht. There ought to be a law. But what are you going to do?

OK, Wilson, wake up the band and take us out with a little feel-good for Punxsutawney Phil's early spring: Well, she got her daddy's car / And she cruised to the hamburger stand, now / Seems she forgot all about the library / Like she told her old man, now / And with the radio blasting / Goes cruising just as fast as she can now / And she'll have fun, fun, fun till her daddy takes the T-bird away...

Do you own a pocketknife, or any other kind of multi-tool? Nope. What did your mother study at university? She got her AA degree and was one course away from getting her degree in criminal justice. When was the last time your living situation changed in any way? Just when we moved here almost 10 years ago. What was the last thing you took a video of? Ha, I just recorded this preview of Dr. Phil to post on Snapchat cause it was funny. Has anyone ever tried to convert you to their religion? That’s how it was with both sets of grandparents growing up. They both tried to influence and sway me to believe what they believed and I attended church/meetings with them sometimes.

Are there any ways in which your childhood was highly atypical? I was a victim of a drive-by shooting at 7 months old, causing me to be a paraplegic, so yeah. A lot of struggles and obstacles followed because of it and I’ve dealt with a lot throughout my life due to health related things. What’s something that used to really stress you out, but doesn’t anymore? School? Ha. I’m done with it now. Do you prefer to be around introverted or extroverted people? Extroverted, actually. My former best friend was very extroverted and complete opposite of me. It was draining at times, but she also brought me out of my shell at times. We balanced each other. My mom and brother are also more extraverted. They’re outgoing and people are drawn to and want to befriend them. Have you ever stayed in a hostel? No. Have you ever been somewhere where you didn’t fluently speak the local language? Yes. What’s an interesting fact about the last person you hugged? She’s been to Italy and Hawaii, which I’m quite envious of. Actually, one of the times she went to Italy she was pregnant with me, so I kinda have been there before? ha. Just eyeliner and mascara. I’m not great with makeup, I can’t do any cool eyeshadow looks or anything. I keep it pretty basic. I honestly haven’t even worn makeup in quite awhile. I don’t think I have at all this year. If you got pregnant the 1st time you had sex, how old would the kid be now? I’m a virgin. Have you ever polished and waxed your car? I’ve never had a car. As I’ve said several times, I don’t drive. As a kid, did you have any friends with parents who yelled a lot? No. If so, did you avoid going to their house because of it? Are you competitive? My Nana texted me a picture of the framed pictures she has up in her hallway because she added the recent photo my cousins and I took for her. She was really excited about that photo. Have you ever lived in a small community where everyone knew each other? No. What are some of your least favorite foods? I’m very picky. For instance, I like meat, but I’m very picky and particular about it. Like I like beef tacos and I’ll eat a hamburger sometimes (not my favorite), but I don’t like steak. I like chicken tenders, boneless chicken wings, and shredded chicken tacos, but I don’t like fried chicken, bone-in chicken, or rotisserie chicken. I don’t like sausage, bacon, or pork chops. I don’t like seafood. I don’t like most veggies. I like some fruits, but I very rarely eat any. It’s actually been a few years since I’ve had any to be honest. :X That’s just some of the things....my list goes on and on. lol. Do you give your pets gifts and treats for their birthday/adoption day? Yes! And Christmas, too. Has anyone ever set you up on a blind date? If so, how did it go? Noo. I would not be interested in doing that at all. Are you a procrastinator? I’m a PROcrastinator. What was the last thing you said out loud? ECLECTICLE 7/25

I took a field trip last weekend. Fortunately I decided to hit the road early. It was Saturday and there would be traffic on the way to Napa -- that was expected. Napa is popular this time of year. Heck, Napa is popular every time of the year. I had been invited to the Culinary Institute of America at Copia to attend a masterclass on hamburgers given by George Motz - hamburger historian and burger scholar. Initially I was on the fence about going. I mean let’s face it. How much can a person learn about Hamburgers (apparently A LOT!), plus my week had been, up to that point, a bit stressful. But it was a friend I wanted to spend more time with, so I said yes to the invite.

The grey cloud cover of the East Bay morning provided a comfortable chill to the air as I climbed into the driver’s seat of the car. I double checked the details of today’s excursion, copying the address to feed into my phone’s navigation app. One hour and a few minutes. Just enough time to take in a podcast and finally get some “Alone Time”.

I have always enjoyed spending time with myself. Alone. Not having to be on. Giving my brain space to recharge or work on some conundrum that is nagging at me -- all thorny and difficult to untangle. I seem to be prone to having a number of those issues. Not unlike many others I am sure. Even if I am reading, or just staring off into space, or even driving north to make hamburgers in the wine country, I can really put my mind to solving a tough problem when I have few other distractions save the whirring of the perpetual motion machine between my ears.

Some folks I know find it hard to be alone. Even downright scary. They seem to equate being alone with being lonely. Those are two different concepts though. Lonely is a feeling. A sadness based on a lack of connection. You can feel lonely in a crowd of people. Being alone, however, is different. It is that physical place where no one's expecting anything. You can operate on your own time -- on your own schedule. You can take the time to figure out what the heck you just argued with your significant other about or plan what your making for dinner. Both very worthy problems to sort out.

Driving up Hwy 29, catching glimpses of the foothills in the distance, covered with a melange of sun kissed golden hues interspersed with evergreen and orange, the windows are down and I’m feeling the warm fresh air on my face. My thoughts are on the road, the podcast and the task of purposefully not stressing about a couple of last week's challenges. I am alone, at least for the next 30 minutes, and am very glad I said yes to this adventure. It is important to look for those little openings of solitude that present themselves. Those chances to be bravely and happily alone.

One of the best things about living in Northern California is the cornucopia of foods inspired by and directly from a multitude of cultures. Last week the wonderfully talented Chef Nora Haron had a mainly Southeast Asian inspired bakery pop-up. The FYUB pop-up (The name of her new venture) was in partnership with new coffee spot Orbit Coffee and Doughnuts. The baked goods were filled with great flavors, new tastes, and even gluten free options. My favorite item? The butterscotch cookie!!

Finally, FINALLY, the author uses detail. Sort of. In some parts. But mostly not.

Continuing on...

Right, so, chapter 7, surprisingly doesn't have a time skip.

It's just Mizpra on the train with some long author monologing about how evil and twisted she is but he never really explains how or why just that "to kill, destroy, cause misery, and produce unhappiness was her life."

For a change he's briefly nice to her by saying she's clever, talented, and almost a genius but then goes on about how not really because she's selfish and gross.

"She did not understand or realise that she herself was the product of the last feeble efforts of exhausted ancestors." Wow.

Paragraph about how Mizpra is basically evil because she doesn't want to get married or have kids or have a sex life or any of that and it goes right into Leigh knowing that all because Leigh, being a genius, enabled him to realise it.

Why are we even talking about Leigh? He's not on the train.

Long paragraph about how children born to women with "nervous exhaustion" (again, not really a real thing) or to older women were basically trash that nobody should want and also makes for...infertile children somehow. This author is a doctor. A medical degree holding doctor, just in case you'd forgotten.

Few more pages rambling on and on about why Mizpra is evil and that only serves to make me still feel a bit bad for her because, so far, she hasn't really done anything all that terrible; the worst she's done so far is humiliate a student for wearing a corset and marry a guy for his typing abilities.

He keeps bringing god into it but, in all honesty, after reading seven chapters of this book he's convinced me that if one does exist it sure as hell isn't merciful.

Psychic conditions mean you can't have reasonable children.

Oh! Finally we get a description of an Evil Thing she's been at! She took a course on bacteriology which, whatever that is, would probably make her better at being a doctor than Leigh, for the sole purpose of sending Leigh's entire family contaminated mail. Cool initial thought but germs spread so she could also inadvertently cause an actual plague.

Her lab has a bunch of mouse and rat cages but, for some reason, they're not in there; they're in the bread. Comically poking their little heads and tails out of the...bread that I sincerely hope she won't eat.

Some descriptions of a bunch of dying rabbits in other cages that had all been infected with whatever disease she was working on.

Cotton tipped tubes are not going to contain pneumonia, diphtheria, typhoid, cholera, 'blood poisoning', or tetanus (sorry, lockjaw) and she really shouldn't be keeping them like that.

Oh, but this is common and "bacteriologists" just carry them around willy-nilly like that because they're--I mean, honestly, it's probably because constant low level exposure has given them immunity so, inadvertently discovering how vaccines work while not knowing that's what's happened.

We find out that, for some reason, she's particularly focused on killing Leigh's kid which is odd because there has never been much mention of her disliking that particular child, just all children. Also, it's 1901, just wait, he's got a pretty high chance of dying before the age of 10 anyway, especially living in a city.

She's a near genius level "bacteriologist" in the plot at this point and can't figure out how to spread diphtheria.

Air.

It spreads through the air.

Just powder it up and mail it along.

Or coat some baby toys with it, I guess that's the route we're going.

All right, so we've got the Baby Murder plan underway. It’s better than a few other Baby Murder plans I’ve heard over the years but, since we’re not even half way through the book I doubt Baby Murder Attempt #1 will fail.

A few scenes of her very nearly getting off to watching her lab animals die while also thinking, in a bizarre level of detail for this book, of a baby dying. Getting a little weird there, Mizpra.

How is it this author can detail that and detail all the ways the alb animals are suffering but couldn't be bothered to add any details to anything else?

Diphtheria doesn't need to enter through a slight wound, Mizpra, it just has to be present. It's very easily airborne and will also likely spread to anyone else that walks into that house until everyone is dead and they use fire as a way to clean the building.

So she goes out, gets a rattle and a whistle, goes back to her lab, files the whistle so it's likely to cut the kid's mouth then applies the "venomous bacilli" (Diphtheria is not venomous...) onto it all and wrapping it up in steralised cotton which would definitely have killed a lot of the diphtheria on there but, 1901 and nobody knows how infectious disease works.

Mizpra, we now find out when some professor addresses her as Dr. Newcomber, does, in fact, hold some sort of doctorate degree. Good for her.

He takes her back to his office and tells her, what amounts to, "Please stop leaving dead animals all over the lab, it's rude to the other students."

Long lecture about how she's coming off as kind of really fucking creepy by doing that and by being pointlessly cruel to the lab animals, she basically just rolls her eyes and asks him if he's done talking yet.

Which made him decide to fire her. She asked him again if he was done talking, and he went. off. on her for how careless she was in the lab and how thoughtless she was in regards to the other people that also had to use the lab which prompts her to start--reading--poetry out loud.

For whatever reason, despite being in Colorado, and despite Professor Ridge not being German she decides to start calling him "Herr Professor" then says goodbye in...French.

His farewell was, "There are no women of genius; the women of genius are men," so at this point, I'm kind of okay with him maybe getting diphtheria as well for that.

It hasn't been mentioned if she mailed the diseased baby toys yet but, they're all going to California now.

On to Chapter 8.

Back in New York with Obera.

There is no e in dachshund, a dachshund that is being mishandled by Obera's kid who still does not have a name, or, rather, his name hasn't been told to any of us reading.

Oh.

"Leigh, Jr." which is normal enough for about two seconds until you read on and the rest of the sentence says, "or, as he was called, Mops". The servant from the place in Hamburg gave him that nickname and that's just what we're going to call the kid now I guess.

Mops.

Obera has gone from the creepy child like girl in the "fascinating toque" to "proud and handsome in the full bloom of matronly womanhood" which is equally creepy sounding just in a different way.

Leigh is, of course, still a published author now and people love him for some inexplicable reason. I still sort of want to backhand him, he's so pretentious and doesn't even have the intellect to back it up.

"Leigh now counted his friends by the hundred". Sure.

They get into an argument about Leigh being a dick at work and Obera reminding him that he really needs to stop doing that shit before he ends up fired again and of course he lectures her on how her silly woman brain couldn't possibly comprehend his genius behaviour.

Can we just skip to the "infect the entire house and possibly city block with diphtheria" subplot here? Because I'm definitely more interested in that than I am in listening to this idiot wax philosophic and say nothing at all for dozens of pages on end.

Not yet? Okay.

Oh! No, few pages further and the diphtheria soaked toys have arrived!

Obera, having some good sense, was super suspicious at receiving a box addressed to a 3 year old, just sort of locked it in drawer to think about what the hell it might be. She assumes Mizpra sent it and that it’s probably poisoned or infected with something which I’d normally say is intuition but, she would have no way of even beginning to think Mizpra had the skills to do that (let alone the access to materials) so we’re going to go with metagaming here; Obera is clearly reading the story along with us.

Anyway, she sends the package to Dr. Bell so maybe someone else will be getting the diphtheria. Just doing a quick look up, in New York around 1900, the average fatality rate for diphtheria was--1,227 deaths in 1901, which is about a 15% rate, of the 7,726 cases reported in Manhattan and The Bronx, which is the area these people are living in.

So, her plan was kind of bad from the beginning; it had a 15% success chance IF it got to the point of infecting the kid.

Pneumonia, tuberculosis, and cholera would have been better, more likely to kill the kid choices. Cholera usually knocks over young children pretty fast.

Or just poison. You have a lab, you probably can easily get cyanide.

Not telling you how to go about your baby murdering plans here, Mizpra, just saying you're not exactly picking the ideas with high chances of success or doing it with any subtlety since they kind of immediately figured out it was from you and probably contaminated somehow.

And on to chapter 9!

Dr. Bell, probably being a real doctor, ran some tests and explained the results to Obera which, of course, made her faint immediately. She does that a lot.

So as she's sort of starting to wake up she starts screaming over and over that Leigh needs to kill her; her being Mizpra. Fair enough response to just finding out your sister in law tried to infect your entire family and specifically your child with diphtheria which had an--admittedly low death rate but still a 15% chance of it.

Leigh, in a surprising moment of clarity asks the other doctor if he knows what she's talking about, he says yes, then Leigh goes with, "NO TIME FOR EXPLANATIONS!" and tries to do medical care things on Obera.

Eventually he goes with, "Okay yeah, I'll kill Mizpra for you."

Dr. Bell, the only sane person in the room, tries to talk him out of that and apparently a pulse of 120 is something we should know the meaning of.

So he's gonna lock himself in a room and not drink just to see what happens. What happened was he stayed awake for three solid days and that's it, only it took several pages to say that because we're supposed to feel sorry for this guy.

Several pages of a rambling story about a morphine addict not part of this story.

More pages of Leigh being mad at religion for no reason whatsoever.

Charlie listens to him ramble about how much he hates religion for the rest of the chapter then tells him he's such a well educated genius and leaves.

I had found my favorite food truck up the street, I’d been tracking them for the last month and they were gonna be right by the museum. They made these fancy sandwiches, always toasted, always fresh bread – couldn’t resist. Harry was good at texting, there were times we’d ghost each other, but usually he would make it up to me. Our time zones were so far apart so calling wasn’t an option. Though, I would love to hear his voice again – northwest was where his accent was located. I had spent about an hour listening to the accents of England, which was weird for me – I’m just used to Americans. It could be why I was very light on the subject of calling him, once and while he would send me a voice memo – usually at night. He made it a ‘thing’ for us. I would send him one usually me saying ‘goodnight, Harry. Sweet dreams.” And he would send one back, longer, telling me about the moon outside, or give a pause and let me hear the ocean against the phone. I had a feeling he was romantic, I didn’t hate it. He was in music. I wondered what he did, if he was a singer, couldn’t be drums – his hands were too soft. His fingers were a bit callused, so maybe guitar.

Harry: I get what you mean, I hate being away from my family. Amelia: Tell me about your family. Harry: My parents are divorced, I’m really close to my mother. I have a sister, I’m close with her too. My mother is remarried to an amazing man, love him to bits. Amelia: I don’t get how people can’t be close to their families. Harry: I agree, what’s your family like? Amelia: I was adopted as a baby, so I have two amazing mothers, and our dogs. If I could say my animals are my siblings, I would. Harry: Ha! Cats would be my siblings. Amelia: Cats are sneaky, but I like that about them. Harry: Right? They surprise you with affection. But look, I’m going to ghost you for a bit. I’m sorry. Amelia: It’s okay! I’m going back to work anyway.

I felt like the work day went by quickly, usually I took my lunch as late as possible, so I could only have a few hours left until I needed to leave. I bid my goodbyes to my coworkers before dealing with the traffic. I lived in Santa Monica, I loved it, it was the busyness of the city but with a more relaxed vibe. I lived above a restaurant (very fitting of me) in a loft. Unfinished artwork cluttering the living space and my bed taking up the corner by the window. I liked waking up the crashing of the ocean, the sunrise being my personal alarm clock. I was making myself some dinner when a dig went off.

Harry: How was work? Amelia: It was work. How was work for you? Harry: It was also work. Are you free to call? Amelia: Yeah!

I ran to find my headphones somewhere in this apartment. I could hear my phone ringing. I answered it before my headphones where untangled.

“One second,” I huffed as I set the phone down on the counter and finished getting the knot out. I plugged it in and tried to compose myself as I tucked my phone into my pocket. “Sorry about that!”

“It’s no problem.” He chuckled, I liked it. I liked actually hearing him rather than a ‘lol’ or a ‘HA!’ as he liked to send. “What are you doing?”

“I’m cooking dinner, what about you?” I suddenly felt nervous, it was just a phone call. We’ve been texting for the last two weeks. I knew a lot of the surface things about him, we’d only really get intimate on the audio messages he’d send me. I was trying not make too much noise as I was cooking, quietly cutting carrots putting everything in bowls so I can have one loud part of the call.

“What are you cooking? It’s about six for you, right?” He ignored my question which was funny to me, he really didn’t like talking about himself, he always wanted to know what I was doing, how I slept, but I wanted to know the same things.

“Stir fry with noodles, and yes it’s about six thirty. What are you doing?” I asked again, I wanted to mostly hear him.

“That sounds delicious. I just got back to my hotel.”

“Hmm, how’s the big apple treating you?”

“Crisp. Very crisp.”

“Sounds like a good apple to me.” I tried to quietly cook food in a pan hoping it wouldn’t bother him too much. “I’m sorry it’s so loud.”

“It doesn’t bother me, not one bit.” Of course, it doesn’t, I felt like I was apologizing too much.

“Okay good, what did you do today. And before you ask me, I just worked. I was thinking later about riding my bike down the pier.” I heard him chuckle, I really liked hearing that.

“I had a few business meetings about my album, mostly. I had lunch with a few friends.”

“Where did you have lunch?”

“Some café, I can’t be bothered with the name, it wasn’t that great.”

“I’m sorry your lunch sucked, ruins the day until dinner.” I was finally done cooking and was sitting down to eat. I felt more uncomfortable about eating on the phone. The idea that the microphone was right by my mouth, and I was eating noodles and it was going to be slurpy, I hated it. “Did you still want to stay on the phone with me even if I was eating?” I was hoping for a no, then he would call me back or something.

“I’m fine with that.” Oh, fucking Christ. I hummed into the phone and I could hear a creek from his side. “Sorry, I just needed to lay back, didn’t notice how loud the bed was.” We both laughed, and my mouth was full of food, so I was trying not to talk, or chew loudly. “I’ll talk while you eat. I know you live in California since you use that stupid ‘find your friends’ app and your location is shared with me. I’ll be coming out in a few days, I was thinking we could do something together, something low key.”

“As long as you don’t stalk me anymore, I’ll do it.”

“I can’t help that iPhones share your every move with me. I had to turn mine off, I had it on that night in Jamaica because I wander when I’m drunk.”

“I can see that; my friends and I use it for tinder dates.”

“Are you on tinder?” I coughed from laughing. “I’m taking that as a no, you don’t seem the type.”

“I’m not, my friends just go on these random dates and it’s easier to get a location and a codeword rather than just guessing.”

“I’m assuming you save everyone then?”

“Sometimes, I’m usually have more free time than them.” I shrugged, he wouldn’t see it. My friends were very much actively dating, while I just liked to sit and talk with people before dating them. Though, I feel like Harry just asked me on a date, or did he ask me to hang out. “Did you ask me on a date or to hang out?”

“Um,”

“Shit, I’m sorry I shouldn’t have asked that.”

“It can be a date if you want it to be.”

“No, I just. It’s not that I wouldn’t want to go on a date with you, it’s just I’d rather hang out first.” He was laughing, like a really deep laugh. I remembered he had dimples, and I imagined them being there while he was laughing. “God, I’m nervous talking to you if you want me to be honest.” I was putting my bowl in the sink.

“I would like for you to be honest with me.” I started slipping on my shoes, I figured that I could go on a walk while were on the phone. It was better than doing random shit around the house while we were on the phone. “I’m quite nervous too.”

“Why are you nervous?” I heard him exhale and suck on his teeth. “I’m nervous because I haven’t been, I guess I would use this word, intimate with a man in a while. Women? All day, but it’s different with a man.” I tended to enjoy the company of a woman rather than a man, I was a bit more masculine than most women, just my mannerisms, the way I dress, how I deal with things. It was hard finding a man who was fitting for the femininity I was searching for and always found in other women.

“Hm, I guess the best way to put it is, you make me feel so normal. You probably think you bore me with your little mundane updates, but I quite enjoy them.” It felt good to know I didn’t bore him. “Do you prefer only women, I don’t mean to pry.”

“No, I don’t really have a preference.”

“Me neither, I think the idea of knowing someone completely and fully before even getting intimate.”

“Me too,” We were in silence for a bit, I was walking around the pier. “What do you do, I know you’re in music, but what do you do?”

“I was in a band, I’ve gone solo now.”

“What band, if you don’t mind me asking.” I heard a chuckled from him.

“You really don’t know, do you?”

“Should I really know? I’m shit at listening to new music.”

“No, no, I love that you don’t know.”

“Are you going to tell me?”

“One Direction.” I couldn’t help but to laugh, I couldn’t place him in a boy group like that. “What’s funny?”

“I’m more of an N*Sync girl myself. I was placing you in an entire metal band.”

“Sorry, I was in Nine Inch Nails,” He laughed, and I couldn’t help but laugh with him.

“I’m more of a Deftones fan, but that’ll work too.”

“I’m shocked you don’t know. I loved being in that group, it was amazing, but having people who just have no idea who I am is great.”

“I’m still listening to Celebrity by N*Sync, so I’ll make some room to fit your music into there.”

“Tell me what you think, honest opinions only.”

“I’ll put in on my work playlist.”

“What do you do at work?”

“Oh! I restore paintings. Like old paintings.”

“That’s cool, so you work at the museum or this a private practice.”

“Well it’s a private practice so I’m contracted by the museum, mostly.”

“That’s quite a cool job, do you do your own art?”

“Yeah, I mainly post it on Instagram.” I started to find my way back home, the sun was going to be setting soon and I would rather be in my loft watching it. Harry hadn’t responded for quite some time, but I saw that he was still on the phone. I suddenly got a notification.

“How’d you find that so quickly, oh my god?”

“Your phone number you, nut.” I laughed, mostly because I’ve called him a nut a few times, to hear him say out loud was hilarious to me.

“Don’t call me a nut, you’re a nut.” I giggled, there were a few times we’d just sit in silence on the phone, I didn’t mind it at all. I’m not a huge fan of talking on the phone, my moms would always call me on speaker when they were cooking or watching TV, or Lucy would call me when she’s rushing around her apartment asking me if I was coming out or not. Harry just wanted to talk. So, we did, we talked until the sun went down. I’m assuming it’s still sunny for him. We talked about how we were in high school, I was just a year younger than him. He was way more successful than I was. We talked about the music we liked, and got on the subject on best rapper which we had an agreement it was Kendrick, all the way.

I told him about the time I went to Coachella and saw him, he asked if I wore a crazy outfit – which I didn’t. We walked more about our families, about how we both have a mother named Anne, his was Anne, mine was Ann. He told me about his sister, and the article she wrote about him.

“I was bursting into tears, I really did.” He told me.

We were talking about movies, he told me he was in one that should be coming out soon – though, he couldn’t give me the details about it. We talked about our pets, his cat dusty. He told me how we wanted a hairless cat, which I told him was an awful want. It was around nine for me, and I was growing tired, still from the trip, and knowing that I was going to be up at six am.

“You’re yawning,” He hummed into the phone, he’d just finished dinner, a burger, with fries, all the extras on the burger. “I should let you sleep,”

“Ugh, I’ve just enjoyed talking to you,” My phone was dying, and I was trying to rush to my bed to put it on the charger.

“I’ve enjoyed talking to you too, nut.”

“Hey, now, I can take it all back.” He was chuckling. I imagine him laying back on these big fluffy pillows, the sheets were probably all white. I imagined him in jeans, maybe a white tee. He smelt good the night I met him, very expensive. It was weird how it was all coming back to me. I was looking up at the ceiling, I bet he was doing the same thing. We both were breathing on the phone, maybe he was thinking about what I was doing too. “What are you thinking about?”

“I had dream last night, about Jamaica, I was very drunk the night I met you, but I could remember your face. I’m just trying to piece it in my head, it’s been awhile.” I hummed, that was too sweet.

“I was drunk too, I remember the way you smelled, which is weird.”

“S‘not weird, s’not at all.”

“You have dimples right, I’m not just making that up?”

“Yeah, you want me to take a picture of myself and send it to you?”

“No, I’ll ruin the excitement until I see you again.”

“I like that idea.”

“I won’t even look at your Instagram, I don’t have photos of myself on there, so you can look at mine.”

“No listening to my old band, the covers have me on it.”

“Deal.” I hummed and closed my eyes. I could see us, dancing and giggling. It was really hot that day, it rained the next. I could smell the ocean, maybe it was because my bed was next to the window.

“I’m going to be honest with you, Amelia.” He liked calling me that instead of Aimee, he said it suited me. “I’m scared once you find out all about me, you’re not going to want to hang out with me anymore. I’m scared once we start hanging out, the media knows your name, the internet knows this sweet little woman – they’ll rip you apart. You’re so normal and I want that, but that’s not me. I’m actually quite jealous. You can get gas on your own, you can grocery shop without anyone bothering you.”

“I guess there’s upsides to being a nobody. But don’t envy me, green doesn’t look good on you.”

“How would you know, green looks great on me.”

“Shut up, oh my god.” We were laughing again. “I’m tired.”

“I know you are, and I’m being selfish by keeping you on the phone.”

“Shush, I’m going to hang up, we can do this again tomorrow. I promise.”

“Okay, Amelia.” I hadn’t hung up, I was hoping he would hang up on me, maybe end this. I didn’t want to be the one to hang up. “Neither of us are going to hang up? Hm, I can’t wait to see you, you pick the time and the place, and I’m all yours. I can pull some strings to get some privacy.”

“Hmm, you said you’re here next week?” I was rolled up in my bed, I could knock out any second. “How about next Thursday, one of my favorite days of the week.”

“Thursday is your favorite day of the week?”

“Friday Eve.” He chuckled.

“Okay, I’ll be there, Petal, Thursday, pick a time. But sleep first.” I hummed into the phone. “Sweet dreams, Amelia.”

“Sweet Dreams, Harry.”

Nothing moves on Ragsdale Road. Cars whiz past on the 10 Freeway about 100 yards away.

At an abandoned gas station, the pumps are stripped of their outer shells and wiring. The convenience store is covered in graffiti, its door kicked in, contents looted. Nearby restrooms are smashed and unworkable, but the stench suggests that hasn’t stopped everyone from using them. The sign over the station announces 24-hour service, a claim that hasn’t been true in years.

Desert Center doesn’t look like it’s worth $6.25 million.

That’s what Riverside resident Balwinder Singh Wraich paid at auction July 13 for the 1,034.78 acres of property in and around Desert Center. What he does with the land could radically transform a region that’s home to people who’ve spent generations in desert solitude.

Here’s what else $6 million can get you in today’s Southern California real estate market:

A 3,200-square foot Palm Springs house, designed by architect Ray Kappe, with spectacular views of the city and surrounding mountains.

A 6,000-square foot, six-bedroom, seven-bathroom “retreat” in Malibu Canyon, on an 8-acre property.

A 3,750-square foot, five-bedroom, four-bathroom house literally on the beach in Dana Point.

But Desert Center is a largely empty desert outpost in the Chuckwalla Valley, about 50 miles from either Blythe or Indio, almost exactly halfway between Los Angeles and Phoenix. The land Wraich bought includes two gas stations, a cafe, a hotel, store, school and the gravesite of a former cafe cook — all abandoned.

Desert Center has no city council or other government. But the U.S. Census Bureau lists it as a spot where people have come together, even though it’s not a formal town or city. The bureau estimates 216 people lived there in 2019, with a median age of 70.6 years old.

The Desert Center Unified School District teaches 29 students, according to the California Department of Education, ranging from kindergarten through 8th grade. The district operates just one of its former five schools. The others shut down after Kaiser Steel’s nearby Eagle Mountain mine closed in 1983. High school students travel about 50 miles each way to attend classes in Blythe. The shell of a former school, caked in graffiti, with broken glass and ceramic tile covering the floor, is visible to freeway motorists zipping past Desert Center.

The road behind

According to legend, in 1915, Kansas-born Stephen Ragsdale and his wife Lydia were driving to Los Angeles, before breaking down on the dirt wagon road between Blythe and Indio. Rescued by a prospector, Ragsdale saw opportunity in the other motorists crossing the Colorado Desert.

“He’d seen numerous people who had been unprepared crossing the desert, so he conceived of the idea of having a rest stop at the halfway point,” said Steve Lech, a historian and author who co-writes The Press-Enterprise’s Back in the Day local history column. “That’s why he called it Desert Center: It was kind of a marketing ploy.”

Opened in September 1921, Desert Center was a family affair.

“He would run the tow truck and pump gas. His wife would run the cafe and do the cooking,” Lech said. “He had two sons and a daughter and they would do auto repairs and work at the center.”

Ragsdale, rebranding himself “Desert Steve,” had dreams of expanding Desert Center, according to Lech. But Ragsdale believed in temperance: Even after Prohibition ended in 1933, he didn’t want tenants to serve or sell alcohol. His lawyer said Ragsdale couldn’t legally prohibit alcohol. So Desert Center stayed small.

Margit Chiriaco Rusche’s parents started the competing community and rest stop of Chiriaco Summit, 19 miles to the west, on the western rim of the Chuckwalla Valley. They spent decades as frenemies of the Ragsdales. According to Rusche, Steve Ragsdale vowed to “run that upstart Italian out of town” when Joe and Ruth Chiriaco moved there in 1933.

“It was very remote,” Rusche said. “As little kids, we pumped gas, we made hamburgers.”

Today, she’s CEO of Chiriaco Summit. It offers food, gas and the General Patton Memorial Museum for road-weary travelers. A motel and a mobile home and RV park are planned.

After his death in 1971, Ragsdale’s son Stanley ran Desert Center until he died in 1999. He kept it small, turning down offers from fast-food chains and others who wanted to “improve” the outpost.

Stanley’s six kids couldn’t agree on how to manage the businesses, so Desert Center gradually shut down. Their battle spent two decades in probate court. It might be the longest probate case in county history, according to Paula Turner, the real estate agent whose Coachella Valley firm handled the sale.

“I haven’t sold a town before,” she said. “This is my first town!”

Even before the auction, Rusche had tried to buy a piece of Desert Center more than once.

“When they were closing down, we were going through a contract to lease the (Desert Center) coffee shop to update it. Thousands and thousands of dollars later, one of the brothers said ‘No, not with a Chiriaco,’” she said.

Rusche then tried to buy part of the property, but the family member selling it didn’t have the clear legal right to do so.

Finally, Riverside County had enough.

“The judge said ‘It’s been 20 years, we’re putting it up for auction,’” Rusche said.

Wraich did not respond to repeated requests for comment. His family runs the Fontana-based trucking company Wraich Transport, which includes the Wraich Travel Plaza truck stop in Fontana.

The property was put up for auction for $5 million, before Wraich outbid Rusche, winning Desert Center with a $6.25 million bid. That brought an end to the Ragsdales’ ownership of the community founded by their patriarch. Members of the Ragsdale family declined to comment.

“That’s how it goes,” Rusche said. “We decided that dirt wasn’t worth that much money.”

In the end, the Chiriacos did get a bit of Desert Center, purchasing a totem pole that once stood outside the cafe. It will be going up at Chiriaco Summit soon, Rusche said.

The here and now

Trucks idle in vacant lots, curtains drawn as drivers presumably get some sleep.

The roof of the Desert Center Market is caved in, roof beams crashed down around empty ice cream and soda refrigerators. A sign in the window reads “Sorry, we’re closed.”

Someone appears to have walked away from the boarded-up cafe mid-cleaning. A bottle of Windex and a roll of paper towels on a table caked in a thick layer of dust are visible through the windows.

Only the U.S. Post Office is still open. The other three shops in the tiny strip mall are long since closed. They seem to have shut down mid-renovation, with paint cans and drop clothes covered in dust visible inside.

“They let it go really bad,” said Harold Copeland, whose first job was working at Desert Center in 1977. “They should have sold something a long time ago and made something of it.”

Few live in Desert Center today. The biggest nearby population center is at Lake Tamarisk, 2 1/2 miles away. A few dozen homes cluster around a county-run nine-hole golf course. The residents are mostly “hermits,” according to one.

Copeland grew up in Eagle Mountain, moving there in 1967. He now lives in Indio, but his mother still lives at Lake Tamarisk.

“They love it out there because it’s just so quiet,” Copeland said. “The streets rolled up at 6 o’clock, but we learned to live with it.”

The lack of things to do in the Chuckwalla Valley is part of the attraction for some.

“There’s no temptations,” said Adrianna Ornales, taking a midday dip in Lake Tamarisk with other members of the Set Free church congregation. The pool at the nearby community center is dry and the center itself locked up. It was 104 degrees at midafternoon on July 30.

Ornales moved to Desert Center in 2018, along with about four dozen other members of her church, to escape the seductions of the big city.

“It’s our little safety bubble out here,” she said.

Ornales works at Lake Tamarisk’s one-room library, open three days a week, that shares a building with the small county firehouse.

She hopes Wraich can bring Desert Center back to life.

“I hope he does something with it,” Ornales said. “More job opportunities, so people can get on their feet.”

The other big population center is Lake Tamarisk Resort, a mobile home and RV park for those 55 years old and up. Many of the 150 trailers and RV spots are empty now, the snowbirds flown away to cooler climes. Once upon a time, it was a park for high-end Airstream trailers. Before that, it served the World War II era Desert Training Center first run by Major Gen. George S. Patton.

Brenda Cervantes, who with her husband has managed the resort about a year, also wants to see Desert Center revitalized.

“They need some business brought back here,” she said. “People call and say ‘Where’s your gas station?’”

The nearest one is 19 miles away, in Chiriaco Summit. Groceries mean a 50-mile trip to Blythe or Indio.

“We’re self-sufficient,” Rusche said. “That’s part of being desert people.”

Cervantes believes Desert Center can be restored without losing the quiet isolation residents enjoy.

“We’re hoping something good comes in,” Cervantes said.

But no one ends up staying in Desert Center by accident.

“We’re our own little oasis out here,” Cervantes said. “Most everyone comes here because it’s out of the way.”
