My favourite part of the show was when the repressed gays lived happily together and nothing sad happened at all

I just re watched Redding Weddy and honestly, hats off to the man who played Havers. Like he appears 3 times at most on the episode, smiles, steals everyone's hearts and then fucks off into the distance. What a legend. Absolute Chad. A true Lad

The captain couldn’t wait to see Havers, so he didn’t sit outside the gate waiting until Havers left the party.
He couldn’t wait to see Havers, so he didn’t spend any more precious seconds trying to cajole the gatekeeper.
He couldn’t wait to see Havers, so he didn’t take the time to have a lie prepared.
He couldn’t wait to see Havers, so he didn’t notice that his chest was a little tight and that he was having trouble breathing.
He couldn’t wait to see Havers, so when he did, Havers was the last person he ever saw.
He couldn’t wait to see Havers, and he never saw him again.

Regarding Ben “giving the audience what they want”.
Unless it’s an entire episode dedicated to a beautifully shot porn erotic encounter in which the camera tracks down the Captains torso, following Havers’ fingers as they carefully unbutton his jacket before gently pushing it off his broad shoulders, etc, etc I very much doubt it!

After watching the Captain cope with Mary’s departure, I just know the regiment couldn’t get a break after Havers left.
He definitely checked everyone rifle twice an hour.
They never had that many chores before.
HQ woke up and discovered a random house in the countryside send them a century worth of paper work.
My man probably tried to fix a car at one point, despite not knowing how, he just wanted to stay occupied at any costs.

I just watched episode 5 and I'm just like... "who the hell was William?!!!" xD Why did they use that name??
I mean I know the Captain says William was the name of the operation... but still, there was something very emotional around that letter and the way it was filmed. Of course, I get that it was a metaphor. But a part of my brain cannot stop thinking about this William, like was the full name Anthony William Havers?? Did - did the Captain have a dog called William at one point (he fibs about having his dog buried there)? Is it his full name, James William Something? Am I missing something very obvious?
Am I torturing myself for an irrelevant detail? I know the answer to that one! Bloody William!

hmmm but what if havers was missing in action so cap just assumed he was dead and tried to move on. three years later the war is over, havers turns up on the doorstep of button house, broken and bloody, asking for cap. the guy at the door looks at him a little pityingly and says "sorry, lad, the only captain who ever lived here died two years ago." what if.

HAVERS TO RETURN IN SERIES 5
BE WARNED THIS POST CONTAINS MINOR SPOILERS FOR THE END OF EPISODE 4 OF GHOSTS.
I was watching episode 4 of Ghosts and noticed something during the monologue by Robin, where he explains that he gives each Ghost that moves on a star. Listing them he says: “Clarence, Godric, Elizabeth, William! HE LAUGHS. William! Annie…” And so on.
Notice that? William?
Where have we seen that name before?
Aha, a certain Lieutenant...
It’s also important to note that this episode was written by Ben Willbond, who also (alongside Simon Farnaby) wrote the episode in series 2, Redding Weddy, in which the name “William” is made reference to multiple times, including appearing on a letter in two different shots, and being said by The Captain to the other Ghosts. “Operation William it was called.”
The name William is heavily implied to be the name of The Captain’s second in command and secret infatuation, and the fandom has essentially taken it for gospel that Havers’ first name is in fact, William.
Something that was bugging me about this though is that surely, SURELY the name William would’ve elicited quite the response from The Captain, as he is often spotted in the background of shots, reacting to statements such as “I caught him… ‘pon the groundskeeper, with the butler ‘pon him!” (episode 1, series 1). So lets see The Captain’s reaction to Havers' name being said, not once, but TWICE.
Oh wait.
The Captain isn’t there to hear it. He’s gone off with Humphrey.
What an awful coincidence that he has been rather curiously tasked with updating Humphrey on the day's events when he is not particularly close with him at all (see series 3, episode 2). It’s almost as if Ben didn’t want us to see Cap’s reaction to Havers’ name being mentioned because it would be a DEAD GIVEAWAY.
I rationalised myself by saying that the names Robin mentioned are in order of who moved on at what time, meaning this simply cannot be OUR William, as we know Annie, who's name comes after William in Robin's list, moved on during the regency era (refer back to "Thomas Thorne Affair"). BUT, upon doing some light research, the name “Clarence” (which is the first name to be mentioned by Robin) came into prevalence in the year 1880, MUCH LATER than when "Godric", a rather viking sounding name (and the second name said by Robin) would’ve been popular.
But it's all so convenient, isn’t it? How come Havers was a ghost at button house for a time? How would he have even died? Let's hark back to the DVD extra, where Robin gives a tour of the house…
“And library! Man murdered in library- oh, not allowed to talk about that yet.”

Holy shit so like. Everyone keeps going “omg what if havers come back in s5” and. My little idea doesnt have much to do with s5 cause i doubt it would ever happen but. Havers had left to join the front line on Africa right? What if his ghost powers were he wasnt stuck where he died, and he was able to leave, wander wherever. And what if he found his way back to Button house because he wanted to remember the old place and he bumps into Captain during his morning run..

IF IT WASN'T FOR THE NIGHTS
the Captain x Havers | G | 2.2k
“I was saying, sir, that it’s good to see you awake, at last,” he chuckled. “Longer than you have been, I mean. You’ve had a nasty time of it.” The Captain did remember waking up a few times, here and there. It was all hazy, though, as his thoughts still were. But he had the very secure sense of being looked after, and looked after well. The Captain comes down with a fever, but his trusty lieutenant is there to catch him when he does.

Both Thomas and the Captain died for true love. Their hearts stopped knowing their love was reciprocated, but they didn’t live long enough to experience it! 🫠
